RÉSUMÉ

Phytophotodermatitis is caused by deposition of photosensitising compounds on the skin followed by ultraviolet exposure. We present an unusual case of a 29-year-old Australian male visiting Greenland who presented with severe itchy bullous eruption on his hands. The cause was a combination of exposure to lime fruit juice and prolonged sun exposure from the Arctic midnight sun.

RÉSUMÉ

Oculo-genital chlamydia caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection. The number of laboratory verified cases increases steadily in Denmark. This is due to an increased testing activity but also increased positivity rates. Men show substantially lower test rates than women albeit higher positivity rates and seem to constitute an important reservoir for a continued high prevalence of chlamydia. Screening and treatment of especially younger sexually active individuals, not at least men, is vital in controlling the disease.

RÉSUMÉ

This is a case report of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) manifesting as haemorrhagic proctocolitis in a homosexual HIV-positive male. The primary symptom was a rectal abscess, which was initially surgically treated and subsequently insufficiently treated with single-dose tablet azithromycin. The patient's symptoms were successfully treated after a 21-day doxycycline regime. LGV is a se xually transmitted infection with a rising incidence among persons with risk behaviour. This case report underlines the importance, that all positive rectal screenings for Chlamydia trachomatis should be routinely serotyped.

RÉSUMÉ

UNLABELLED: Folliculitis and pseudofolliculitis barbae typically affects men with curly hair who shave too close. Treatment modalities vary in effectiveness and include improved hair removal methods, topical corticosteroids, topical and oral antibiotics, and retinoids as well as laser surgery. We report a novel treatment of recalcitrant pseudofolliculitis barbae and confirm effectiveness in recalcitrant folliculitis in a 58-year old man who responded completely following photodynamic therapy with methyl aminolevulinate. CONCLUSION: Photodynamic therapy should be considered in recalcitrant folliculitis and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

RÉSUMÉ

New strategies of immunotherapy are currently being evaluated, and the combination of chemo- and immunotherapy has shown promising results. The cytokine interleukin-21 (IL-21) is known to enhance immune function, and in this study we have investigated its ability to boost the efficacy of chemoimmunotherapy-cyclophosphamide and adoptive cell transfer (ACT)-in the B16-OVA/OT-I murine model of malignant melanoma. Subcutaneous B16-OVA tumors were established in C57BL/6J mice 8 days before adoptive transfer of tumor-specific OT-I T cells. In addition to cyclophosphamide and ACT, one group of mice received daily injections of murine IL-21 (mIL-21). Mice treated with mIL-21 had more tumor-specific T cells in the circulation 4 and 7 days following ACT (P=0.004 and P=0.002, respectively). Importantly, mIL-21 and ACT controlled tumor growth instantly and more effectively than ACT alone (P=0.001, day 4)-an effect that persisted up to 5 days after the last mIL-21 injection. We conclude that mIL-21 enhances chemoimmunotherapy: it amplifies the number of tumor-specific T cells in the circulation and also stunts early tumor growth.
