RÉSUMÉ

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of anatomical landmarks is crucial for effective dental treatments, especially in surgical procedures. The mental nerve (MN), a branch of the inferior alveolar nerve, features a critical landmark known as the anterior loop (AL), often overlooked by surgeons. This study aims to assess the occurrence of the MN AL, its type, and its length within a sample of the Jordanian population by utilizing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included the acquisition of CBCT images from a total of randomly selected 268 patients who sought treatment for a range of dental conditions (such as tooth extraction, orthodontic therapy, and dental implants) at hospitals affiliated with the Jordanian Royal Medical Services. Reformatted images were utilized to detect the AL type, length, and the association between the nerve type and mental foramen (MF) position. RESULTS: This study involved 268 patients. The distribution of MF positions and the characteristics of the inferior dental nerve were evaluated, with no significant gender differences observed. The predominant location for the MF in both males and females in both sides was position IV, with 52% of females and 56-59% (left-right sides) of males presenting this trait. The inferior dental nerve types also showed no significant gender variation, with 42-43% (left-right sides) of females having type III and a similar distribution among males. Measurements of the midline-mental foramen and inter-foramen distances revealed slight variations between genders, with significant differences noted in the right AL length for type III nerves, favoring males (p=0.034). A notable correlation was found between the type of inferior dental nerve and the MF position, particularly with type I nerves predominantly associating with position IV mental foramina (p≤0.004). CONCLUSION: CBCT scans are essential in the precise evaluation of the AL, aiding in the prevention of nerve injuries during dental procedures. Our results highlight the diversity of the AL in the Jordanian population and the importance of individualized treatment plans. Future research with larger cohorts is advised to refine these insights, aiming to improve treatment outcomes and patient care.

RÉSUMÉ

Supernumerary teeth are presented in any region of the dental arches as additional teeth to the standard set of teeth and may present in either the primary or secondary dentition. They can be found as single or multiple teeth on one or both sides of the dental arches, with a preference for the premaxilla. The supernumerary teeth might cause aesthetic and/or functional problems, mainly if situated in the maxillary anterior region. Multiple supernumerary teeth are often related to specific conditions or in syndromic patients, i.e., cleft palate, cleft lip, cleidocranial dysplasia, and Gardner's syndrome. This report presents a case of an eight-year-old female patient with non-syndromic bilateral supernumerary teeth in the primary and secondary dentition. The patient is medically fit, and her family history was non-contributory.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: To evaluate children's and parents' practice and attitude toward oral hygiene and their knowledge about oral hygiene. METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted on randomly selected children who were seen in the Pediatric dentistry clinic in different Royal Medical Services hospitals. A modified questionnaire was used to gather information from the child or parents to gather the child's demographic data and evaluate the children's and parents' practice and attitude toward oral hygiene, their knowledge about oral hygiene, information about the parent and family, and oral examination, the questionnaire questions' reliability and validity were assessed by test-retest and Cronbach's Alpha test. RESULTS: Three hundred seventy four patients were included, and the average age was 5.06 ± 3.58 SD years. Children's and parents' practice toward oral hygiene was inadequate where the majority (83.3%) brush their teeth occasionally, change their toothbrushes infrequently, apply toothpaste inappropriately, and less than half (47.2%) clean their tongue after teeth brushing. A significant number (73%) of candidates were aware that oral health has a significant role in their general health and can prevent dental problems. Participants agreed that maintaining a healthy mouth is an individual responsibility. The majority of participants came from large family size (the average family members 6.1 ± 1.7 SD) who live below the poverty line. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that awareness of oral health status in children below the age of 12 was poor. Although their oral knowledge was good their attitude and behavior were inadequate. These findings urge the need for expanded, well-organized, preventive educational programs that include school's syllabus, house visits, and hospitals for parents and children alike.

RÉSUMÉ

The bone regenerative capacity of synthetic calcium phosphates (CaPs) can be enhanced through the enrichment with selected metal trace ions. However, defining the optimal elemental composition required for bone formation is challenging due to many possible concentrations and combinations of these elements. We hypothesized that the ideal elemental composition exists in the inorganic phase of the bone extracellular matrix (ECM). To study our hypothesis, we first obtained natural hydroxyapatite through the calcination of bovine bone, which was then investigated its reactivity with acidic phosphates to produce CaP cements. Bioceramic scaffolds fabricated using these cements were assessed for their composition, properties, and in vivo regenerative performance and compared with controls. We found that natural hydroxyapatite could react with phosphoric acid to produce CaP cements with biomimetic trace metals. These cements present significantly superior in vivo bone regenerative performance compared with cements prepared using synthetic apatite. In summary, this study opens new avenues for further advancements in the field of CaP bone biomaterials by introducing a simple approach to develop biomimetic CaPs. This work also sheds light on the role of the inorganic phase of bone and its composition in defining the regenerative properties of natural bone xenografts.

RÉSUMÉ

AIM: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the most common antidepressant drugs. SSRI use is associated with increased risk of bone fracture and titanium implant failure. The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the effect of SSRIs on osseointegration and bone healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On a total of 24 Sprague-Dawley rats, a custom-made titanium implant was placed in the left tibia, while a unicortical defect was created in the right tibia. Rats were assigned randomly into two groups and received a daily dose of either sertraline (5 mg/kg) or saline. After two weeks, they were euthanized and bone healing and osseointegration were assessed by micro-CT and histology. RESULTS: Bone formation in bone defects was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in sertraline-treated rats (BV/TV = 20.67 ± 11.98%) compared to the controls (BV/TV = 37.87 ± 9.56%). Furthermore, the percentage of osseointegration was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in sertraline-treated rats (34.40 ± 7.17%) compared to the controls (54.37 ± 8.58%). CONCLUSION: Sertraline hinders bone healing and implant osseointegration.

RÉSUMÉ

Oral granuloma gravidarum (OGG) is a distinct clinical entity used to describe pyogenic granuloma developing mainly on the gingiva of pregnant women, possibly propagated by gingival high levels of active progesterone and poor oral hygiene. We report herein a 41-year-old woman presented 7 months after childbirth with two painless masses of OGG in mandibular gingiva that developed at the end of first trimester and increased gradually in size even after delivery. Surgical excisional biopsy was performed under general anaesthesia with extraction of periodontally involved mandibular anterior teeth. Proper oral hygiene in pregnant women is mandatory to prevent such oral condition.
