RÉSUMÉ

Abstract The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a medium-sized carnivore that occurs in different regions of Pakistan, however, still lacks scientific data on its ecology and distribution. The current study investigated the phylogenetic status and diet of the red fox (V.v. griffithii) occurring in Ayubia National Park, Pakistan. Through camera trapping and molecular analysis, we confirmed the occurrence of red fox in the study area. Based on mitochondrial cytochrome B (304 bp) and limited sampling, nearly all red foxes of Ayubia National Park and surrounding Himalayan ranges fall within Holarctic maternal lineage, whereas red foxes found in plains of Pakistan are part of the basal Palearctic maternal lineage. Using 32 scats, we found that red fox diet comprises of 80% animal-based prey species (both wild and domestic) and 19% plant matter. The wild animal prey species included Cape hare (Lepus capensis) and flying squirrel (Pteromyini sp.), which constituted 17% and 15% of diet, respectively. Red foxes infrequently consumed House mouse (Mus musculus), Himalayan Palm civet (Paguma larvata) and sheep (Ovis aries), each comprising around 6% to 9% of red fox diet. The fox species also scavenged on domestic donkey opportunistically. Based on our sampling, our study suggests that the red fox (V.v. griffithii) that occurs in Ayubia National Park and across the lesser Himalayan ranges belongs to Holarctic maternal lineage. The study also highlights consumption of plant seeds by red foxes, indicating it may play an important ecological role in seed dispersal in Ayubia National Park.

Abstract Dietary habits of bandicoot rats (bandicota bengalensis) were investigated in the agricultural crops of the Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan by analysing stomach contents. The research activities were conducted in major field crops including wheat-groundnut and in the fallow lands during non-crop season at the field boundaries. The specimens were captured from the fields using kill/snap traps, and dissected to collect their stomach samples for laboratory analysis. Light microscopic slides of the plant material were recovered from stomach samples and the reference materials were collected from the field. Results revealed that the bandicoot rat predominantly fed upon cultivated crops during cropping season but consumed wild vegetation during non-cropping season. There was no significance difference between summer and winter diets. Most frequently consumed crop food items were wheat (Triticum aestivum; 28.57%), groundnut (Arachis hypogea; 11.26%), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor; 10.17%), chickpea (Cicer arietinum; 9.52%), maize (Zea mays; 6.49%), millet (Pennisetum glaucum; 5.84%), barley (Hordeum vulgare; 4.98%) and mustard (Brassica campestris; 4.98%). Among wild vegetation were consumed khbal gha (Cynodon dactylon; 7.79%), baron dhab (Demostachya bipinnata; 7.36%) and Prickly flower (Achyranthes aspera; 3.03%). The study concludes that, in addition to consuming wheat and groundnut crops, the Lesser bandicoot rat also subsists on grasses, weeds, and some fodder crops, as important component of its diet in agro-ecosystem of the Pothwar Plateau.

Abstract Growth of plants is severely reduced due to water stress by affecting photosynthesis including photosystem II (PSII) activity and electron transport. This study emphasised on comparative and priority targeted changes in PSII activity due to progressive drought in seven populations of Panicum antidotale (P. antidotale) collected from Cholistan Desert and non-Cholistan regions. Tillers of equal growth of seven populations of P. antidotale grown in plastic pots filled with soil were subjected progressive drought by withholding water irrigation for three weeks. Progressive drought reduced the soil moisture content, leaf relative water content, photosynthetic pigments and fresh and dry biomass of shoots in all seven populations. Populations from Dingarh Fort, Dingarh Grassland and Haiderwali had higher growth than those of other populations. Cholistani populations especially in Dingarh Grassland and Haiderwali had greater ability of osmotic adjustment as reflected by osmotic potential and greater accumulation of total soluble proteins. Maximum H2O2 under water stress was observed in populations from Muzaffargarh and Khanewal but these were intermediate in MDA content. Under water stress, populations from Muzaffargarh and Dingarh Fort had greater K+ accumulation in their leaves. During progressive drought, non-Cholistani populations showed complete leaf rolling after 23 days of drought, and these populations could not withstand with more water stress condition while Cholistani populations tolerated more water stress condition for 31 days. Moreover, progressive drought caused PSII damages after 19 days and it became severe after 23 days in non-Cholistani populations of P. antidotale than in Cholistani populations.

A low odor formulation of ultra-low volume (ULV) malathion (Fyfanon EW®) mosquito adulticide was evaluated in the field for its efficacy using caged female Aedes aegypti. Cages were placed in three rows, 30 m apart at 30, 60, and 90 m from the spray line. The product was applied at the manufacturer's suggested operational rate of 0.28 liter/min (9.5 fl oz/min) and at the maximum label rate of 0.37 liter/min (12.6 fl oz/min) with a Guardian 190ES truck mounted ULV sprayer. At 1 h post-treatment for the manufacturer's suggested operational rate, adult mortality ranged from 85% at 30 m to 46% at 90 m (overall average 65.5%). At 24 h post-treatment, mortality was significantly greater at each distance with complete control of caged mosquitoes at 30 m and >95% at 90 m. Overall, 24-h average mortality at this rate was 96.8%. At the maximum label rate, mosquito mortality at 1 h was considerably greater at all distances and ranged from about 89% to 75% with an overall average of 84.3%. At 24 h post-treatment, complete mortality was recorded at all transect distances at this higher rate. In conclusion, our results showed that at 24 h, Fyfanon EW® was considered very effective when applied by ULV truck mounted ground equipment for area-wide control of mosquitoes.

RÉSUMÉ

Moiré superlattices of twisted van der Waals heterostructures provide a promising and tunable platform for simulating correlated two-dimensional physical models. In twisted bilayer transition-metal dichalcogenides with twist angles close to 0°, the Γ and K valley moiré bands are described by the honeycomb and the triangular effective lattice models, respectively, with distinct physics. Using large-scale first-principles calculations, we show that in-plane biaxial strain and out-of-plane pressure provide effective knobs for switching the moiré lattice models that emerged at the band edges in twisted bilayer WSe2 by shifting the energy positions of the Γ and K valley minibands. The shifting mechanism originates from the differences in the orbital characters of the Γ and K valley states and their responses to strain and pressure. The critical strain and pressure for switching the Γ/K valleys are 2.11% and 2.175 GPa, respectively.

RÉSUMÉ

In this work we use complex Lagrangian technique to obtain Noether-like operators and the associated conserved quantities of an Euler-Lagrange (EL) system. We show that the three new conserved quantities namely, Noether conserved quantity, Lie conserved quantity and Mei conserved quantity reported by Fang et al. [1] for an EL-system and even more in numbers by Nucci [2] can also be obtained via complex variational formalism. Generally, a linear system of EL-equations possesses maximum 8-dimensional algebra of Noether symmetries and Noether's theorem yields related 8-first integrals. However, our methodology produces 10 Noether-like operators and 10 corresponding invariant quantities for the underlying system of equations. Among those ten first integrals, three (as named above) are reminiscent to those found in [1]. In addition, from the remaining list of conserved quantities several are similar to those reported in [2]. Moreover, the current study presents an alternative approach to compute invariant quantities of EL-systems and leads to interesting and fascinating results.

RÉSUMÉ

The present experimental work was conducted to elucidate the toxicity of nimesulide at three different doses in black kites (Milvus migrans). M. migrans is one of the most common raptors near human habitations. The goal of the current investigation was to determine whether nimesulide is similarly hazardous to raptors as was diclofenac sodium and to investigate the acute oral toxicity of nimesulide in these birds. For this study, eight adult male black kites (M. migrans) were randomly divided into four groups. M. migrans in the control group (n = 02) were not treated with nimesulide. The other three groups were given nimesulide doses. The birds in the first (n = 02) were declared the control group. The second (n = 02), third (n = 02), and fourth groups were administered nimesulide at a low, medium, and high dose of 2, 4, and 6 mg/kg live body weight of bird/day, respectively, for 10 days. Nimesulide-addled birds became listless and despondent, then anorexic. The birds were standing there with their eyes closed and showing no signs of life. There was an increase in saliva production, a slowing of breathing, and dilated pupils. No clinical signs were observed in the control group. No mortality was seen in the control or treated groups. The control group did not show lesions of gout, but black kites intoxicated with nimesulide at 2, 4, and 6 mg/kg live body weight of bird/day showed inflammation, apoptosis, hemorrhage, necrosis, and leukocytic infiltration tissues of the liver, kidney, and heart of black kites (M. migrans) treated with different concentrations of nimesulide. The treated groups also showed apoptosis of myofibrils and hyperplasia. The hypertrophy, atrophy, fibrosis, necrosis of skeletal muscles and hemorrhage were prominent in the muscles of black kites (M. migrans) intoxicated with nimesulide. All observed histological alterations got worse in a dose-related way. There was no significant difference in AST, ALT, ALP, serum uric acid, but a significant difference was observed in the values of serum urea (p = 0.001) and serum creatinine (p = 0.019).

RÉSUMÉ

Nowadays, it would be ideal to develop high-performance photovoltaic devices as well as highly efficient photocatalysts for the production of hydrogen via photocatalytic water splitting, which is a feasible and sustainable energy source for addressing the challenges related to environmental pollution and a shortage of energy. In this work, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structure, optical properties and photocatalytic performance of novel SiS/GeC and SiS/ZnO heterostructures. Our results indicate that both the SiS/GeC and SiS/ZnO heterostructures are structurally and thermodynamically stable at room temperature, suggesting that they are promising materials for experimental implementation. The formation of SiS/GeC and SiS/ZnO heterostructures gives rise to reduction of the band gaps as compared to the constituent monolayers, enhancing the optical absorption. Furthermore, the SiS/GeC heterostructure possesses a type-I straddling gap with a direct band gap, while the SiS/ZnO heterostructure forms a type-II band alignment with indirect band gap. Moreover, a red-shift (blue-shift) has been observed in SiS/GeC (SiS/ZnO) heterostructures as compared with the constituent monolayers, enhancing the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby making them promising candidates for optoelectronic applications and solar energy conversion. More interestingly, significant charge transfers at the interfaces of SiS-ZnO heterostructures, have improved the adsorption of H, and the Gibbs free energy ΔH* becomes close to zero, which is optimal for the hydrogen evolution reaction to produce hydrogen. The findings pave the path for the practical realization of these heterostructures for potential applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis of water splitting.

RÉSUMÉ

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of nanofilled composite resin restorations in traumatized, endodontically treated maxillary incisors with structural loss of 40% or less. The performance of the restorations was assessed in terms of longevity (survival) and esthetics (success) over a 20-month period. The secondary objective was to employ a novel digital method to quantify preoperative tooth structure loss. Sixty-one fractured maxillary incisors in 55 patients were included in the study. The teeth were photographed with a digital single-lens reflex camera equipped with a macro ring flash. The amount of lost tooth structure was calculated with digital photography software. The teeth were restored with a nanohybrid composite resin and self-etching adhesive system bonding agent. To assess esthetics, color change in the blue-yellow axis (Δb*) of the composite resin restoration was evaluated digitally with the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b color system. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to assess Δb*, and a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to assess the longevity of the restorations. The study findings showed a statistically significant difference between pretreatment and posttreatment b* values (P < 0.05), but the difference was too small to be clinically perceptible to the human eye. A total of 5 restorations (9.8%) failed. The remaining restorations survived for a mean (SD) period of 18.6 (4.4) months. The log-rank test did not show any significant association between the amount of residual tooth structure and success of the restoration. The results of this study showed that use of direct composite resin restorations in endodontically treated maxillary incisors resulted in acceptable survival and success rates. RÉSUMÉ

In the recent era, the nanofluid's transportation due to the Jeffrey-Hemal flow phenomenon (i.e., carrying fluid through a converging/diverging channel) has significant applications in numerous engineering and science technologies. Therefore, multi-disciplinary evolution and research motivated us to present current attempt. The aim of this attempt is to present Jeffrey-Hamel mechanism of the nanofluid through non-parallel channel under thermally balance non-Darcy permeable medium impacts. The nanomaterial is represented using the Buongiorno nanofluid model. The investigation also includes zero mass flux impacts as well as variable rheological fluid properties. The influences of temperature jump are also encountered in the current analysis. The governing flow expressions under the Jeffrey-Hemal analysis are made dimensionless utilizing the similarity variables. The dimensionless equations are then solved using the analytical scheme (homotopy method) and the obtained series solutions are convergent. The influences of the involved parameters on concerned profiles are investigated through graphs. Force of drag, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are elaborated graphically. In this analysis, intensification in Prandtl number enhances the heat transfer rate whereas decrement is seen in heat transfer rate for larger thermal slip parameter. Further, mass diffusivity parameter adversely affects the mass transfer rate. The current analysis incorporates numerous industrial and technological processes including transportation, material synthesis, microfluidics, high-power Xrays, biomedical, solid-state lighting, microelectronics, scientific measurement, medicine, molten polymers extrusion via converging dies, cold drawing operation related to polymer industry etc.

RÉSUMÉ

This investigation consists of Maxwell's fluid which describes rate type non-Newtonian fluid in best; it has great applications in engineering, technology and industry. Linear stretching sheet generates the flow in fluid. Flow momentum is measured with MHD effect. When Fourier's and Fick's laws are incorporated relaxation time factor then known as Cattaneo-Christov model which are implemented for heat and mass transport. The features of heat source or sink and non-linear type thermal stratification are employed with variable thermal conductivity. The features of chemical reaction and non-linear type solutal stratification are analyzed along with variable mass diffusivity. By the usage of boundary layer phenomenality in this problem, non-linear PDEs are achieved. These equations are transmuted into non-linear and non-homogeneous differential equations ramified with ordinary derivatives after applying similarity transformations. The most exclusive homotopic analysis method is used to get the analytic solutions of nonlinear and non-dimensional governing equations. The significant results of progressive parameters are dominant in this investigation. The arising parameters are examined in detail and results are shown graphically. It is found out that with the increment of time relaxation factor velocity, temperature and concentration profiles reduce. It increases the viscoelastic impacts related to stress relaxation time which makes viscoelastic materials more durable.

RÉSUMÉ

Stroke is a serious condition that results from an occlusion of blood vessels that leads to brain damage. Globally, it is the second highest cause of death, and deaths from strokes are higher in older people than in the young. There is a higher rate of cases in urban areas compared to rural due to lifestyle, food, and pollution. There is no effective single medicine for the treatment of stroke due to the multiple causes of strokes. Thrombolytic agents, such as alteplase, are the main treatment for thrombolysis, while multiple types of surgeries, such ascraniotomy, thrombectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and hydrocephalus, can be performed for various forms of stroke. In this review, we discuss some promising phytocompounds, such as flavone C-glycoside (apigenin-8-C-ß-D-glucopyranoside), eriodictyol, rosamirinic acid, 6″-O-succinylapigenin, and allicin, that show effectiveness against stroke. Future study paths are given, as well as suggestions for expanding the use of medicinal plants and their formulations for stroke prevention.

RÉSUMÉ

OBJECTIVE: Diosmetin is a flavonoid that is found in many important medicinal plants that have antihypertensive therapeutic potential. Diosmetin has been shown to have antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which suggests that it could be a potential candidate for use in antihypertensive therapy. METHODS: In vivo and in vitro methods were used for our investigation into the antihypertensive effects of diosmetin. RESULTS: Diosmetin significantly decreased the mean arterial pressure (MAP). The effects of diosmetin on the MAP and heart rate were more pronounced in hypertensive rats. To explore the involvement of the muscarinic receptors-linked NO pathway, Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and atropine were pre-administered in vivo. The pretreatment with L-NAME did not significantly change the effects of diosmetin on the MAP by excluding the involvement of NO. Unlike L-NAME, the atropine pretreatment reduced the effects of diosmetin on the MAP, which demonstrated the role of the muscarinic receptors. In the in vitro study, diosmetin at lower concentrations produced endothelium-dependent and -independent (at higher concentrations) vasorelaxation, which was attenuated significantly by the presence of atropine and indomethacin but not L-NAME. Diosmetin was also tested for high K+-induced contractions. Diosmetin induced significant relaxation (similar to verapamil), which indicated its Ca2+ antagonistic effects. This was further confirmed by diosmetin shifting the CaCl2 CRCs toward the right due to its suppression of the maximum response. Diosmetin also suppressed phenylephrine peak formation, which indicated its antagonist effects on the release of Ca2+. Moreover, BaCl2 significantly inhibited the effects of diosmetin, followed by 4-AP and TEA, which suggested that the K+ channels had a role as well. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained data showed the Ca2+ channel antagonism, potassium channel activation and antimuscarinic receptor-linked vasodilatory effects of diosmetin, which demonstrated its antihypertensive potential.
