Introduction: Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy is a novel autoimmune neurological disorder and is diagnosed by GFAP-IgG in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) measurement. Case report: Herein, we described a 10-year-old boy with abnormal neurological symptoms and signs. GFAP-IgG was detected in CSF using cell-based assay (CBA), and his CSF showed an increase in lymphocytes, a slight decrease in glucose and an increase in protein level in the early stage. The cranial MRI showed multiple strips of T2-FLAIR hyperintense signal changes on the surface of medulla oblongata, pons, and gyrus in bilateral cerebral hemispheres. He was treated with immunoglobulin (IVIG) and high-dose methylprednisolone pulse treatment, and his clinical presentations gradually improved. Conclusion: We highlight that patients with normal inflammatory markers in peripheral blood have obvious meningitis-like symptoms, and clinicians need to consider GFAP astrocytopathy. The early diagnosis and treatment of GFAP astrocytopathy are important for improving the prognosis.

The interaction between fluorinated surface in the partially reduced nano-crystallite titanium dioxide (TiO2-x (F)) and MgH2 is studied for the first time. Compared with pristine MgH2 (416 °C), the onset desorption temperature of MgH2 +5 wt.% TiO2-x (F) composite can be dramatically lowered to 189 °C. In addition, the composite exhibits remarkable dehydrogenation kinetics, which can release 6.0 wt.% hydrogen thoroughly within 6 min at 250 °C. The apparent activation energy for dehydriding is decreased from 268.42 to 119.96 kJ mol-1 . Structural characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that the synergistic effect between multivalent Ti species, and the in situ formed MgF2 and MgF2-x Hx is beneficial for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 . Moreover, oxygen vacancies can accelerate the electron transportation and facilitate hydrogen diffusion. The study provides a novel perspective on the modification of MgH2 by fluorinated transition metal oxide catalyst.

Air pollution continues to be a serious problem in Xi'an. A heavy pollution process and formation mechanism were investigated in Xi'an in January 2019 using multi-source methods (such as material balance and sulfur/nitrogen oxidation rate (SOR/NOR)). The multi-source data included the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3; the chemical components of PM2.5; the meteorological records of ground and vertical observations; the atmospheric reanalysis data. Three phases were obtained including the accumulation phase (P1), maintenance phase (P2), and dispersion phase (P3) during the pollution period. The pollution event was primarily attributed to the superposition of adverse weather conditions and feedback effects. During the periods of P1 and P2, the area of Xi'an was affected by blocking and zonal westerly airflow at 500 hPa (with flat westerly airflow) and uniform-distribution pressure at sea level with a limited pressure gradient and stable weather conditions, and the easterly wind was dominant at 925 hPa; not all of these factors were conducive to the pollutant diffusion. An interaction feedback mechanism between meteorological conditions and heavy pollution could be studied using the ground-based microwave radiometer. The correlations between PM2.5 and inversions of water vapor density, relative humidity, air temperature, and temperature inversion were significant with coefficients of 0.86, 0.62, 0.53, and 0.38, respectively. The feedback mechanism was primarily manifested as follows:with the pollutant accumulation, the radiative cooling effect could lead to or strengthen the occurrence and intensity of temperature inversion, decrease the mixed layer height, and cause moisture accumulation. High humidity could further maintain the pollution by accelerating the secondary formation and promoting the hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles. Therefore, the dominant chemical components to PM2.5were secondary inorganic ions (SO42-+NO3-+NH4+, SNA) and "other" components during the period of P2, with contributions of 43.2% and 23.1%, respectively. In addition, the peak values of PM2.5, SOR, NOR, and the light extinction coefficients all occurred on the same days (January 3 and 6), indicating that the effect of secondary formation was important for both heavy pollution events and visibility. The total contribution of NH4NO3, organic matter (OM), (NH4)2SO4, and EC to the light extinction coefficient was more than 85%. Limited variations in the proportion for components were observed in three phases. During the period of P3, the strong cold air in the mid-lower atmosphere was conducive to the dry and clean air sinking and the pressure gradient at sea level increasing. These were beneficial to the diffusion of air pollutants and water vapor.

The selective oxygenation of ubiquitous C(sp3 )-H bonds remains a highly sought-after method in both academia and the chemical industry for constructing functionalized organic molecules. However, it is extremely challenging to selectively oxidize a certain C(sp3 )-H bond to afford alcohols due to the presence of multiple C(sp3 )-H bonds with similar strength and steric environment in organic molecules, and the alcohol products being prone to further oxidation. Herein, we present a practical and cost-efficient electrochemical method for the highly selective monooxygenation of benzylic C(sp3 )-H bonds using continuous flow reactors. The electrochemical reactions produce trifluoroacetate esters that are resistant to further oxidation but undergo facile hydrolysis during aqueous workup to form benzylic alcohols. The method exhibits a broad scope and exceptional site selectivity and requires no catalysts or chemical oxidants. Furthermore, the electrochemical method demonstrates excellent scalability by producing 115 g of one of the alcohol products. The high site selectivity of the electrochemical method originates from its unique mechanism to cleave benzylic C(sp3 )-H bonds through sequential electron/proton transfer, rather than the commonly employed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT).

Tremendous progress in the inseparable relationships between probiotics and human health has enabled advances in probiotic functional foods. To ensure the vitality of sensitive probiotics against multiple harsh conditions, rising food-grade delivery systems for probiotics have been developed. This review gives a summary of recently reported delivery vehicles for probiotics, analyzes their respective merits and drawbacks and makes comparisons among them. Subsequently, the applications and future prospects are discussed. According to the types of encapsulating probiotics, food-grade delivery systems for probiotics can be classified into "silkworm cocoons" and "spider webs", which are put forward in this paper. The former, which surrounds the inner probiotics with the outer protective layers, includes particles, emulsions, beads, hybrid electrospun nanofibers and microcapsules. While hydrogels and bigels belong to the latter, which protects probiotics with the aid of network structures. The future prospects include preferable viability and stability of probiotics, co-delivery systems, targeted gut release of probiotics, delivery of multiple strains, more scientific experimental verification and more diversified food products, which will enlighten further studies on delivering probiotics for human health. Taken together, delivery vehicles for probiotics are-or will soon be-in the field of food science, with further applications under development.

BACKGROUND: We designed this study to investigate the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine on epileptic seizures, as well as its adverse effects, in children with epilepsy (<18 years). METHODS: This anonymous questionnaire study involved a multicenter prospective survey of outpatients and inpatients with epilepsy (<18 years) registered in epilepsy clinics in eight hospitals in six cities of Shandong Province. RESULTS: A total of 224 children with epilepsy were included in the study. Fifty of them experienced general adverse events after vaccination. The most common local adverse events were pain or tenderness at the injection site. The most common systemic adverse effects were muscle soreness and headache. No severe adverse events were reported. There were no significant differences in the number of antiseizure medications (P = 0.459), gender (P = 0.336), etiology (P = 0.449), age (P = 0.499), duration of disease (P = 0.546), or seizure type (P = 0.475) between the patients with and without general adverse events. We found that the risk of seizure after vaccination was decreased in children who were seizure free for more than six months before vaccination. There was no significant difference in the number of seizures during the first month before vaccination, the first month after the first dose, and the first month after the second dose (P = 0.091). CONCLUSION: The benefits of vaccination against COVID-19 outweighed the risks of seizures/relapses and severe adverse events after vaccination for children with epilepsy.

Objectives: Several COVID-19 vaccines list "uncontrolled epilepsy" as a contraindication for vaccination. This consequently restricts vaccination against COVID-19 in patients with epilepsy (PWE). However, there is no strong evidence that COVID-19 vaccination can exacerbate conditions in PWE. This study aims to determine the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on PWE. Methods: PWE were prospectively recruited from 25 epilepsy centers. We recorded the seizure frequency at three time periods (one month before the first vaccination and one month after the first and second vaccinations). A generalized linear mixed-effects model (GLMM) was used for analysis, and the adjusted incidence rate ratio (AIRR) with 95% CI was presented and interpreted accordingly. Results: Overall, 859 PWE were included in the analysis. Thirty-one (3.6%) and 35 (4.1%) patients were found to have increased seizure frequency after the two doses, respectively. Age had an interaction with time. The seizure frequency in adults decreased by 81% after the first dose (AIRR=0.19, 95% CI:0.11-0.34) and 85% after the second dose (AIRR=0.16, 95% CI:0.08-0.30). In juveniles (<18), it was 25% (AIRR=0.75, 95% CI:0.42-1.34) and 51% (AIRR=0.49, 95% CI:0.25-0.95), respectively. Interval between the last seizure before vaccination and the first dose of vaccination (ILSFV) had a significant effect on seizure frequency after vaccination. Seizure frequency in PWE with hereditary epilepsy after vaccination was significantly higher than that in PWE with unknown etiology (AIRR=1.95, 95% CI: 1.17-3.24). Two hundred and seventeen (25.3%) patients experienced non-epileptic but not serious adverse reactions. Discussion: The inactivated COVID-19 vaccine does not significantly increase seizure frequency in PWE. The limitations of vaccination in PWE should focus on aspects other than control status. Juvenile PWE should be of greater concern after vaccination because they have lower safety. Finally, PWE should not reduce the dosage of anti-seizure medication during the peri-vaccination period.

The present study aimed to enhance the bioaccessibility of hydrophobic astaxanthin (AST) by developing food-grade emulsion systems. Ovalbumin (OVA) fibrils and candelilla wax-based oleogels were prepared for the next fabrication of AST-loaded oleogel-based Pickering emulsions. The food-grade oleogel was obtained by mixing 0.7% (w/w) candelilla wax and soybean oil. The nano-scale OVA fibrils were observed by transmission electron microscope. SDS-PAGE analysis of OVA fibrils displayed the appearance of peptides with molecular weight around 10 kDa. Contact angle measurement indicated that excellent amphiphilicity endowed OVA fibrils with satisfactory Pickering emulsifier performance. The obtained oleogel-based Pickering emulsions displayed ultrastability during 90-day storage and outstanding freeze-thaw stability. Furthermore, the superiority of AST-loaded oleogel-based Pickering emulsion was further reflected in the apparently ameliorative lipolysis extent and AST bioaccessibility compared with oleogel. This work would facilitate the utilization of OVA and the development of oleogel-based Pickering emulsions with desirable nutraceutical bioaccessibility.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex syndrome cluster of metabolic disorders, which greatly increases the risks of diabetic and cardiovascular diseases. Although it has become a significantly worldwide public health burden, its pathogenesis largely remains unknown. In this study, we first performed an integrated analysis of proteomic and metabonomic data of liver tissues of rats between MetS and control groups to reveal possible mechanisms of MetS. A total of 16 significantly perturbed pathways were identified, of which three pathways were shared by patients with MetS and diabetes identified by analysis of serum samples, including alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis, and glycine, serine and threonine metabolism. Additionally, it was found that 18 differential metabolites were closely related with 36 differential proteins, which were considered as significantly discriminant metabolites and proteins between two groups and were mainly involved in metabolic processes of gamma-aminobutyric acid and acetyl-CoA, biosynthetic processes of cholesterol and amino acids. The results of PPI network analysis and topological parameter calculation of four methods revealed that 16 proteins can serve as hub proteins of MetS. Followed by searching the PubMed database and molecular docking of Cyp7a1 and Got1, we concluded that atorvastatin and resveratrol may be potential drugs for MetS.

Protein-polysaccharide complexes, which involve Maillard-type protein-polysaccharide conjugates and electrostatic protein-polysaccharide complexes, have the potential to stabilize oleogel-based nanoemulsions for nutraceutical delivery. Here, ovalbumin (OVA) and gum arabic (GA) were used to prepare OVA-GA conjugate (OGC) and OVA-GA mixture (OGM), followed by the fabrication of astaxanthin-loaded oleogel-based nanoemulsions. Carnauba wax (5% w/w) and rice bran oil were mixed to prepare food-grade oleogel. The successful preparation of OGC was verified by means of SDS-PAGE analysis and free amino groups determination. OGC endowed oleogel-based nanoemulsions with smaller emulsion droplets and higher stability during 30-day storage, implying more outstanding emulsifying capability than OGM. Both OGC-stabilized nanoemulsions and OGM-stabilized nanoemulsions could enhance the extent of lipolysis and the bioaccessibility of astaxanthin compared with oleogel. Meanwhile, OGC exhibited significantly better than OGM, which indicated that OGC-stabilized oleogel-based nanoemulsions possessed more desirable nutraceutical delivery performance than OGM-stabilized oleogel-based nanoemulsions. This study may fill a gap in the influence of different protein-polysaccharide complexes on oleogel-based nanoemulsions and contribute to deeper insights about novel oleogel-based nanoemulsions for their applications in the food industry.

In this study, the optimal environmental condition for preparation of lactoferrin particles assembled via transglutaminase-induced crosslinking (TG-LF particles) was pH 8, 100 U/g of TG concentration, 50 °C and 2 h of crosslinking time. Contact angle of TG-LF particles was 79°. Then, corn oil-based oleogels were prepared with carnauba wax (CW), behenyl alcohol (BA) and CW-BA mixture at 1:4 ratio (MT). To investigate the effect of oleogels on oleogel-based Pickering emulsions, oleogel-based Pickering emulsions were prepared by a two-step method using different oleogels as the oil phase and the TG-LF particles as the emulsifier. In vitro digestion study revealed that CW oleogel-based Pickering emulsion had the highest lipolysis rate and curcumin bioaccessibility. This study demonstrated that TG-LF particle-stabilized oleogel-based Pickering emulsions had good performance in curcumin delivery, which provided a new idea for the preparation of Pickering emulsifier and enriched the knowledge in the field of oleogel-based Pickering emulsion.

We developed the radical cyclization/addition of alkynylphosphine oxides with easily available cycloalkanes, alcohols, and ethers using a visible-light and environmentally friendly synthetic strategy in the absence of photocatalyst at room temperature. This mild and metal- and base-free reaction provided a structurally varied set of significant benzo[b]phosphole oxides through sequential C-H functionalization in an atom-economical manner.

Objective: Intractable epilepsy and uncontrolled seizures could affect cardiac function and the autonomic nerve system with a negative impact on children's growth. The aim of this study was to investigate the variability and complexity of cardiac autonomic function in pre-school children with pediatric intractable epilepsy (PIE). Methods: Twenty four-hour Holter electrocardiograms (ECGs) from 93 patients and 46 healthy control subjects aged 3-6 years were analyzed by the methods of traditional heart rate variability (HRV), multiscale entropy (MSE), and Kurths-Wessel symbolization entropy (KWSE). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to estimate the overall discrimination ability. Net reclassification improvement (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) models were also analyzed. Results: Pre-school children with PIE had significantly lower HRV measurements than healthy controls in time (Mean_RR, SDRR, RMSSD, pNN50) and frequency (VLF, LF, HF, LF/HF, TP) domains. For the MSE analysis, area 1_5 in awake state was lower, and areas 6_15 and 6_20 in sleep state were higher in PIE with a significant statistical difference. KWSE in the PIE group was also inferior to that in healthy controls. In ROC curve analysis, pNN50 had the greatest discriminatory power for PIE. Based on both NRI and IDI models, the combination of MSE indices (wake: area1_5 and sleep: area6_20) and KWSE (m = 2, τ = 1, α = 0.16) with traditional HRV measures had greater discriminatory power than any of the single HRV measures. Significance: Impaired HRV and complexity were found in pre-school children with PIE. HRV, MSE, and KWSE could discriminate patients with PIE from subjects with normal cardiac complexity. These findings suggested that the MSE and KWSE methods may be helpful for assessing and understanding heart rate dynamics in younger children with epilepsy.

Fabrication of food-grade water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions without surfactant, as the primary substitutes of trans-fat and saturated fat, was still a significant challenge in food science. A facial method has been adopted to fabricate W/O emulsions at 20 °C. The obtained emulsion had long-time stability, and there was no apparent phase separation or oiling-out after 60 days of storage. In this system, beeswax served as a stabilizer for both oleogels and oleogel-based emulsions. The sol-gel melting temperature of the oleogel was 37 ± 0.5 °C by regulating beeswax content to 4% w/w, and then the oleogel was used to fabricate W/O emulsion with the droplet diameter of around 9 µm. Thermo-reversible and thixotropic properties of oleogels were both retained for emulsions. Furthermore, both oleogels and oleogel-based emulsions had compact gel-like structures. The self-emulsifying W/O emulsions without surfactant would have great potential applications in food industry, pharmaceutical industry and feed industry.

This study aimed to discover concurrences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and derive models of the most frequent items of ADRs based on the SIDER database, which included 1430 marketed drugs and 5868 ADRs. First, common ADRs of organic drugs were manually reclassified according to side effects in the human system and followed by an association rule analysis, which found ADRs of digestive and nervous systems often occurred at the same time with a good association rule. Then, three algorithms, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM) and deep learning, were used to derive models of ADRs of digestive and nervous systems based on 497 organic monomer drugs and to identify key structural features in defining these ADRs. The statistical results indicated that these kinds of QSAR models were good tools for screening ADRs of digestive and nervous systems, which gave the ROC AUC values of 81.5%, 98.9%, 91.5%, 69.5%, 78.4% and 78.8%, respectively. Then, these models were applied to investigate ADRs of 1536 organic compounds with four phase and zero rule-of-five (RO5) violations from the ChEMBL database. Based on the consensus ADRs' predictions of models, 58.1% and 42.6% of compounds were predicted to cause these two ADRs, respectively, indicating the significance of initial assessment of ADRs in early drug discovery.

P450 fatty acid decarboxylase OleT from Staphylococcus aureus (OleTSA) is a novel cytochrome P450 enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of fatty acids to yield primarily terminal alkenes and CO2 or minor α- and ß-hydroxylated fatty acids as side-products. In this work, the interactions between a series of cycloalkyl phosphorus heterocycles (CPHs) and OleTSA were investigated in detail by fluorescence titration experiment, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and 31P NMR spectroscopies. Fluorescence titration experiment results clearly showed that a dynamic quenching occurred when CPH-6, a representative CPHs, interacted with OleTSA with a binding constant value of 15.2 × 104 M-1 at 293 K. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) showed that the hydrogen bond and van der Waals force played major roles in the interaction between OleTSA and CPHs. The UV-vis and 31P NMR studies indicated the penetration of CPH-6 into the interior environment of OleTSA, which greatly affects the enzymatic activity of OleTSA. Therefore, our study revealed an effective way to use phosphorus heterocyclic compounds to modulate the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes.

In order to find a new type of antifouling coating with higher biological activity and more environmental protection, heterocyclic compounds and benzisothiazolinone were introduced into acrylic resin to prepare a new type of antifouling resin. In this study, a series of grafted acrylic resins simultaneously containing benzoisothiazolinone and heterocyclic monomers were prepared by the copolymerization of an allyl monomer with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). Inhibitory activities of the copolymers against marine fouling organisms were also investigated. Results revealed that the copolymers exhibit a clear synergistic inhibitory effect on the growth of three seaweeds: Chlorella, Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros curvisetus, respectively, and three bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio coralliilyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, respectively. In addition, the copolymers exhibited excellent inhibition against barnacle larvae. Marine field tests indicated that the resins exhibit outstanding antifouling potency against marine fouling organisms. Moreover, the introduction of the heterocyclic group led to the significantly enhanced antifouling activities of the resins; the addition of the heterocyclic unit in copolymers led to better inhibition than that observed in the case of the resin copolymerized with only the benzoisothiazolinone active monomer.

To explore the role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in pediatric anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis, we assessed the profiles of circRNAs and mRNAs in blood leukocytes from anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis patients and healthy controls using microarray analysis. 1196 circRNAs and 719 mRNAs (change ≥2, p < .05) were dysregulated in anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis patients, relative to healthy controls, based on microarray data. Further bioinformatic analysis demonstrated that the host genes of dysregulated circRNAs are primarily associated with receptor internalization. In conclusion, circRNAs may be implicated in the pathogenesis of pediatric anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.
