The mechanisms of lip wound healing after bilateral crossing of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) were studied on Chinchilla rabbits in 3 experimental series, 6 animals per series. In group 1 bilateral crossing of IAN was carried out, in group 2 bilateral crossing of IAN was paralleled by removal of a mucous flap in the middle of the lower lip, and in group 3 the same wound as in group 2 was created, after which the wounds in this group were daily treated with a special ointment and a single injection of lidocaine (1% solution) under the wound. The nerve crossing led to development of ulcer on the lip with degenerative changes in the vascular walls, destruction of nerve fibers, and fragmentation of some axial cylinders. Crossing of IAN simultaneously with removal of the lower lip flap led to more severe degenerative changes in the tissue. Daily treatment of the lip with the ointment and lidocaine blocking normalized wound healing. A possible mechanism of the changes observed is discussed.

The paper gives data on a new original device and relevant methods for determining the threshold values of tactile sensitivity of periodontal receptors. Methods for studies, the arrangement of the device, and its control are fully described. The use of the device makes it possible to judge about the time course of changes in the periodontium in parodontium pathology and may render a considerable assistance in tooth prosthesis.

Epithelial lining of upper portion of alimentary tract differs sharply from other digestive system portions. This is associated primarily with the peculiarities of local processes of morphogenesis. Intertissular interactions, as well as changes in architectonics and differentiation of the structures, surrounding the epithelium, in particular mesenchymal cells, are of primary importance in morphogenesis of this portion. The organ specificity of the development of the oral and esophageal epithelium is due to their local peculiarities.

Smear impressions of human buccal mucosa keratotic and nonkeratotic zones in health were studied by histochemical methods. Differences in the cytochemical spectrum of biopolymers contained in nucleus-free scales and nucleus-containing cells were revealed. Cationic proteins, acid phosphatase, and nonspecific esterase detected in exfoliative epithelial cells are particularly interesting. Exfoliative cells of the buccal epithelium play an important role in its protective reactions.

Experiments were carried out on 120 albino rats, divided into "active" and "passive", depending on the type of their nervous system. The animals were exposed to complete fasting of up to 6 days, after which feeding was resumed for 1 to 3 days. Oral mucosa, muscle tissue, and maxillofacial tissue were examined by histologic and histochemical methods. The adaptation reactions were the same in the active and passive animals, but the rates of their triggering and intensity differed. Adaptive processes rapidly triggered on in the active animals, but these animals were less resistant than the passive ones.

Effects of an intrauterine streptococcal infection induced at different stages of pregnancy on the developing fetus and newborn were studied in non-inbred white rats. The course of denture development was found changed in both fetuses and newborns. A number of functional shifts in the central nervous system and physical status, presenting in the postnatal period, were detected in the experimental animals.

The authors investigated human embryos and fetuses of 4 to 40 weeks old, their evolution and oesophageal histodifferentiation characteristics. The terms used to describe oesophageal tissue structure formation are defined more accurately. A detailed analysis of the sequence of oesophageal histogenesis processes is given, special attention being paid to the development of muscle element evolution in different oesophagus sections.

The paper is concerned with a clinical study of 9 patients where ganglionitis of the upper cervical sympathic node proceeded with an atrophy of the soft tissues in the form of facial hemiatrophy. Besides in experiments on 18 guinea pigs the authors either removed or irritated the upper cervical sympathic node and then after a certain period during 30 days performed histological and histochemical studies of the soft tissues of the animal muzzle. It was possible to mark a prevalent lesion of the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue. In the early periods of the experiment there was a more expressed change in the metabolic reactions and less-structural disorders which developed eventually and had a secondary character due to disorders of metabolic processes. These data permit to consider that such changes take place in the faces of patients with ganglionitis of the upper cervical sympathic node.
