RÉSUMÉ

The self-supervised monocular depth estimation framework is well-suited for medical images that lack ground-truth depth, such as those from digestive endoscopes, facilitating navigation and 3D reconstruction in the gastrointestinal tract. However, this framework faces several limitations, including poor performance in low-texture environments, limited generalisation to real-world datasets, and unclear applicability in downstream tasks like visual servoing. To tackle these challenges, we propose MonoLoT, a self-supervised monocular depth estimation framework featuring two key innovations: point matching loss and batch image shuffle. Extensive ablation studies on two publicly available datasets, namely C3VD and SimCol, have shown that methods enabled by MonoLoT achieve substantial improvements, with accuracies of 0.944 on C3VD and 0.959 on SimCol, surpassing both depth-supervised and self-supervised baselines on C3VD. Qualitative evaluations on real-world endoscopic data underscore the generalisation capabilities of our methods, outperforming both depth-supervised and self-supervised baselines. To demonstrate the feasibility of using monocular depth estimation for visual servoing, we have successfully integrated our method into a proof-of-concept robotic platform, enabling real-time automatic intervention and control in digestive endoscopy. In summary, our method represents a significant advancement in monocular depth estimation for digestive endoscopy, overcoming key challenges and opening promising avenues for medical applications.

Biochar was prepared using peanut shells as raw materials, and then composite amino-functionalized lignosulfonate was used to prepare a biochar/lignosulfonate adsorbent (BC-CLS). The morphology and structure of BC-CLS were characterized using FT-IR, SEM, zeta potential, and XPS. The adsorption performance of BC-CLS was evaluated by batch adsorption experiments and dynamic adsorption experiments (adsorption column flow adsorption). The results showed that BC-CLS adsorbent exhibited significant adsorption performance for Cu2+, including a short equilibrium time (50 min), fast adsorption rate (11 mg g-1 min-1), and high static saturation adsorption capacity (354 mg g-1). Dynamic adsorption experiments indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of BC-CLS adsorbent was approximately 280 mg g-1, with a removal rate of over 99% after five cycles, meeting the wastewater discharge standard (less than 1 mg L-1). The results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of BC-CLS adsorbent for Cu2+ was controlled by multiple adsorption mechanisms, including electrostatic attraction, precipitation, and metal ion complexation. Additionally, under pH = 5 conditions, using a 40 mg per L Cu2+ solution, the adsorption performance of BC-CLS adsorbent remained above 60% after five adsorption-desorption experiments, indicating good cycling stability of BC-CLS adsorbent.

The coastal areas and the adjacent islands are the hotspots of human economic and social activities, including urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural practices, which have profound impacts on the ecological environment of the coastal environment. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), as emerging contaminants, have become hot topics in water ecological security and public concern. However, the profiles of antibiotic resistome in the costal water remain largely unknown, impeding resistome risk assessment associated with coastal environments. In this study, the high-throughput quantitative PCR technique was used to investigate the abundance and distribution of ARGs in the coastal environment of Xiamen City. Combined with the 16S rDNA gene amplicon sequencing method, the structure and composition of the microbial community in a water environment were investigated, and the influencing factors and associated mechanism of ARGs in seawater were deeply explained. The results of this study showed that a total of 187 ARGs were detected in the coastal water environment, and the abundance level was up to 1.29×1010 copies·L-1. Multidrug resistance, aminoglycosides, and ß lactamase resistance genes were the three main classes of antibiotic resistance genes in the water environment of the Xiamen coastal zone. On the whole, the profile of ARGs was of high abundance, great diversity, and common co-existence, and the coastal water environment was an important hot area and reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes. Twenty-two microbes, including Nautella, Candidatus, Tenacibaculum, Rubripirellula, and Woeseia, were potential carriers of the corresponding 16 antibiotic resistance genes. The mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and microbial community structure accounted for 93.9% of the variation in environmental resistance genes in water. Therefore, microbial community and its mobile genetic elements were the most important driving forces for the occurrence and evolution of ARGs in coastal waters. Based on the results, it is implied that the environmental antibiotic resistance genes in the waters near Xiamen Island have potential risks to water ecological security and human health and highlight the necessity for comprehensive surveillance of ARGs associated with microbial contamination in the coastal aquatic environment.

Soil-bentonite (S-B) barriers have been widely used for heavy metal pollution containment. This study conducted batch adsorption tests and diffusion-through tests to evaluate how ionic strength and bentonite ratio influence the migration of Cr(VI) in natural clay-bentonite mixtures. The test results indicated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) exhibited an obvious anion adsorption effect, the pH of the soil mixture increased with the addition of bentonite, resulting in a decrease in the positive surface charge. This change led to a decrease in Cr(VI) adsorption capacity, from 775.19 mg/kg for pure clay to 378 mg/kg for mixture samples with excessive bentonite. Furthermore, as the ionic strength increases from 0 to 0.1 M, the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity increases slightly due to the weakening of electrostatic repulsion on the clay particle surface, but the effective diffusion coefficient (De) increases by 21.97%. The compression of the diffusion double layer (DDL) under high ionic strength conditions enlarges the diffusion path and enhances the migration of Cr(VI) through the pore flow paths. Moreover, hydrated bentonite effectively fills the interaggregate pores of natural clay, thus creating narrower and more tortuous flow paths. However, excessive bentonite increases the pH value and pore volume, resulting in changes to the soil microstructure and disrupting the continuous skeleton of natural clay, which is unfavorable for Cr(VI) containment. Based on the study of the Cr(VI) contaminated site, a bentonite ratio of 2:10 is recommended for optimal natural performance of the natural clay-bentonite barrier.

With the development of miniaturized devices, there is an increasing demand for 2D multifunctional materials. Six ferroelastic semiconductors, Y2Se2XX' (X, X' = I, Br, Cl, or F; X ≠ X') monolayers, are theoretically predicted here. Their in-plane anisotropic band structure, elastic and piezoelectric properties can be switched by ferroelastic strain. Moderate energy barriers can prevent the undesired ferroelastic switching that minor interferences produce. These monolayers exhibit high carrier mobilities (up to 104 cm2 V-1 s-1) with strong in-plane anisotropy. Furthermore, their wide bandgaps and high potential differences make them broad-pH-value and high-performance photocatalysts at pH value of 0-14. Strikingly, Y2Se2BrF possesses outstanding d33 (d33 = -405.97 pm/V), greatly outperforming CuInP2S6 by 4.26 times. Overall, the nano Y2Se2BrF is a hopeful candidate for multifunctional devices to generate a direct current and achieve solar-free photocatalysis. This work provides a new paradigm for the design of multifunctional energy materials.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disease mainly characterized by cartilage damage and synovial inflammation. Si Miao Powder, an herbal formula, was recorded in ancient Chinese medicine prescription with excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Based on the classical formula, the modified Si Miao Powder (MSMP) was developed with the addition of two commonly Chinese orthopedic herbs, which had the efficacy of strengthening the therapeutic effect for OA. Methods: In the in vivo experiments, thirty-six 8-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into six groups: sham group, OA group, celecoxib group, low-MSMP group, middle-MSMP group, and high-MSMP group. OA mice were constructed by destabilization of medial meniscus (DMM) and treated with MSMP granules or celecoxib by gavage. The effects of MSMP on cartilage, synovitis and inflammatory factor of serum were tested. For in vitro experiments, control serum and MSMP-containing serum were prepared from twenty-five C57BL/6 mice. Macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) were induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and then treated with MSMP-containing serum. The expression of inflammatory factors and the change of the NF-κB pathway were tested. Results: In vivo, celecoxib and MSMP alleviated OA progression in the treated groups compared with OA group. The damage was partly recovered in cartilage, the synovial inflammatory were reduced in synovium, and the concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α were reduced and the expression of IL-10 was increased in serum. The function of the middle MSMP was most effective for OA treatment. The results of in vitro experiments showed that compared with the LPS group, the MSMP-containing serum significantly reduced the expression levels of pro-inflammatory (M1-type) factors, such as CD86, iNOS, TNF-α and IL-6, and promoted the expression levels of anti-inflammatory (M2-type) factors, such as Arg1 and IL-10. The MSMP-containing serum further inhibited NF-κB signaling pathway after LPS induction. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that MSMP alleviated OA progression in mice and MSMP-containing serum modulated macrophage M1/M2 phenotype by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway. Our study provided experimental evidence and therapeutic targets of MSMP for OA treatment.

The prior studies have shown that interleukin-2 (IL-2) exerts important roles in the pathological and physiological processes of lung diseases. However, the role of IL-2 in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is still uncertain. Through a prospective cohort study, our research will explore the correlations between serum IL-2 levels and the severity and prognosis in CAP patients. There were 267 CAP patients included. Blood samples were obtained. Serum IL-2 were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Demographic traits and clinical characteristics were extracted. Serum IL-2 were gradually elevated with increasing severity scores in CAP patients. Correlation analyses revealed that serum IL-2 were connected with physiological parameters including liver and renal function in CAP patients. According to a logistic regression analysis, serum IL-2 were positively correlated with CAP severity scores. We also tracked the prognostic outcomes of CAP patients. The increased risks of adversely prognostic outcomes, including mechanical ventilation, vasoactive agent usage, ICU admission, death, and longer hospital length, were associated with higher levels of IL-2 at admission. Serum IL-2 at admission were positively associated with severe conditions and poor prognosis among CAP patients, indicated that IL-2 may involve in the initiation and development of CAP. As a result, serum IL-2 may be an available biomarker to guide clinicians in assessing the severity and determining the prognosis of CAP.

BACKGROUND: With rapid urbanization, massive migration, and non-family-based eldercare involvement, Chinese concepts of eldercare responsibility and filial piety are shifting. We performed age-period-cohort (APC) analyses to assess the transition of old-age pension coverage, eldercare responsibility, and filial piety concepts and its urban-rural differences among Chinese adults using data from the China General Social Survey (2006-2017). METHODS: Old-age pension coverage (yes/no) and primary eldercare responsibility (government/offspring/self/sharing) were investigated in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Filial piety was evaluated using customized questionnaires in 2006 and 2017. The APC effects were estimated using mixed effects and generalized additive models. RESULTS: Among 66,182 eligible participants (mean age: 48.8 years, females: 51.7%) in the six waves, APC analyses indicated that old-age pension coverage increased with aging and over time. Across cohort groups, it grew as the cohort was younger in urban residents but decreased in rural residents. The concept of offspring-based (> 50%) and government/self/offspring-shared eldercare (> 30%) predominated. APC analyses revealed that the offspring-based concept declined with aging (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.79-0.84), whereas the government-based (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.33-1.41) and self-based (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.47-1.63) concepts increased with aging. People born around the 1940s have a comparatively higher possibility to perceive that the primary eldercare responsibility should be undertaken by the government and elder parents. In contrast, people born in the younger cohort were more likely to perceive that adult children are responsible for their parents' primary eldercare. Filial piety score slightly increased with aging (ß = 0.18, SD: 0.05) but decreased as the birth cohort was younger. In addition, rural participants were more likely to perceive offspring-based eldercare and maintain filial piety, and the related urban-rural difference was intensified by aging. CONCLUSIONS: The traditional concept that eldercare solely relies on offspring has changed to relying on multiple entities, including the government and self-reliance. Diluted filial piety in people born in the young cohort requires reinforcement. Moreover, future healthy aging policies need to focus more on urban-rural disparities to promote equity in social well-being.

Background: Osteoporosis (OP) is a chronic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, resulting in increased bone fragility and a higher risk of fractures. It is a significant public health concern, particularly among postmenopausal women and older adults. The imbalance between bone formation and resorption is the fundamental cause of OP. Current clinical drugs for OP have limited efficacy and can cause side effects. Therefore, there is a need to explore alternative treatments and investigate their mechanisms to improve OP management. The Xianling Gubao capsule, a traditional Chinese medicine, is commonly used to treat OP by tonifying the kidney. However, the specific mechanism of action of the Xianling Gubao capsule in improving OP remains unclear, necessitating further research in this area. Methods: The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) content was evaluated by dot blot and m6A ribonucleic acid (RNA) methylation assay kit. The contents of methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3), runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP) were appraised by quantitative Reverse Transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot. The bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) method was used to establish an animal model of OP. OP bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (OP-BMSCs) were extracted from mice in the OVX group by the whole bone marrow method. METTL3 overexpression and control vectors were transfected to OP-BMSCs using X-tremeGENE HP DNA Transfection Reagent. The ALP activity in OP-BMSCs was assessed by ALP staining. The calcium nodules in OP-BMSCs were detected by Alizarin Red S (ARS) assay. The Xianling Gubao capsule solution was employed to gavage mice, and the drug-containing serum was used to treat OP-BMSCs. Dot blot allows for the assessment of relative levels of m6A modification. The m6A RNA methylation assay kit is a specialized kit designed to quantitatively measure m6A levels in RNA samples. qRT-PCR allows for the measurement of mRNA levels of target genes. Western blot is used to detect and quantify specific proteins in a sample, and provides information about protein expression levels. OVX mimics the hormonal changes occurring in postmenopausal women and leads to bone loss and osteoporotic conditions in animals. This model allows for the investigation of the effects of the Xianling Gubao capsule on OP in a controlled experimental setting. Results: The m6A modification and METTL3, RUNX2, ALP, and BGLAP levels were reduced in bone samples of patients with OP and OVX mice compared with the corresponding control groups. Upregulated METTL3 enhanced the osteogenic ability of OP-BMSCs. METTL3 overexpression obviously increased m6A modification and METTL3, RUNX2, ALP, and BGLAP levels in OP-BMSCs. Xianling Gubao capsule treatment could weaken the impact of OP in mice by regulating the m6A modification and METTL3, RUNX2, ALP, and BGLAP levels. Serum containing Xianling Gubao capsule could enhance the osteogenic capability of OP-BMSCs and boost METTL3, RUNX2, ALP, and BGLAP levels. Treatment with the Xianling Gubao capsule shows promising effects in attenuating the impact of OP. The capsule is found to regulate m6A modification and increase the levels of METTL3, RUNX2, ALP, and BGLAP in OP-BMSCs. This indicates that the Xianling Gubao capsule may rescue the diminished osteogenic capability of OP-BMSCs by modulating METTL3. These findings suggest that the Xianling Gubao capsule has the potential to be an effective drug for the treatment of OP. Conclusion: Taken together, the m6A modification and contents of osteogenic-related factors were reduced in OP. Upregulated METTL3 improved the osteogenic ability, m6A modification, and osteogenic-related factor abundances in OP-BMSCs. Xianling Gubao capsule rescued the diminished osteogenic capability of OP-BMSCs by modulating METTL3 and might serve as an effective drug for OP. The Xianling Gubao capsule, as a traditional Chinese medicine, could potentially complement existing therapeutic approaches for OP. By targeting the m6A modification pathway and promoting osteogenic differentiation, the capsule may help to expedite bone formation and repair, which are critical for managing OP and reducing the risk of fractures.

This study investigates the mechanism through which paeoniflorin inhibits TSLP expression to regulate dendritic cell activation in corticosteroid-dependent dermatitis treatment. Utilizing databases like TCMSP, we identified paeoniflorin's components, targets, and constructed networks. Molecular docking and gene enrichment analysis helped pinpoint key targets and pathways affected by paeoniflorin. In vitro and in vivo models were used to study CD80, CD86, cytokines, T-cell activation, skin lesions, histopathological changes, TSLP, CD80, and CD86 expression. Our study revealed paeoniflorin's active constituent targeting IL-6 in corticosteroid-dependent dermatitis. In vitro experiments demonstrated reduced TSLP expression, CD80, CD86, and cytokine secretion post-paeoniflorin treatment. In vivo, paeoniflorin significantly decreased skin lesion severity, cytokine levels, TSLP, CD80, and CD86 expression. The study highlights paeoniflorin's efficacy in inhibiting TSLP expression and suppressing dendritic cell activation in corticosteroid-dependent dermatitis, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic intervention. Additionally, it offers insights into the complex molecular mechanisms underlying paeoniflorin's anti-inflammatory properties in treating corticosteroid-dependent dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is one of the most important participants of antioxidant enzyme system in biological system. Previous studies have found that SOD1 is associated with many inflammatory diseases. The goal of this study was to assess the associations of serum SOD1 with the severity and prognosis in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients by a prospective cohort study. METHODS: CAP patients were enrolled from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University. Peripheral blood samples were gathered. The level of serum SOD1 was detected through enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical characteristics and demographic information were analyzed. RESULTS: The level of serum SOD1 was gradually upregulated with elevated CAP severity scores. Spearman correlation coefficient or Pearson rank correlation analyses indicated that serum SOD1 was strongly connected with many clinical parameters among CAP patients. Further linear and logistic regression analyses found that the level of serum SOD1 was positively associated with CRB-65, CURB-65, SMART-COP, and CURXO scores among CAP patients. Moreover, serum higher SOD1 at admission substantially increased the risks of ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive agent usage, death, and longer hospital stays during hospitalization. Serum SOD1 level combination with CAP severity scores elevated the predictive abilities for severity and death compared with alone serum SOD1 and CAP severity scores in CAP patients during hospitalization. CONCLUSION: The level of serum SOD1 is positively associated with the severity and poor prognosis in CAP patients, suggesting that SOD1 is implicated in the initiation and progression of CAP. Serum SOD1 may be regarded as a biomarker to appraise the severity and prognosis for CAP patients.

A significant Omicron wave emerged in China in December 2022. To explore the duration of humoral and cellular response postinfection and the efficacy of hybrid immunity in preventing Omicron reinfection in patients with lung cancer, a total of 447 patients were included in the longitudinal study after the Omicron wave from March 2023 to August 2023. Humoral responses were measured at pre-Omicron wave, 3 months and 7 months postinfection. The detected severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) specific antibodies including total antibodies, anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) specific IgG, and neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 wild type (WT) and BA.4/5 variant. T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 WT and Omicron variant were evaluated in 101 patients by ELISpot at 3 months postinfection. The results showed that Omicron-infected symptoms were mild, while fatigue (30.2%), shortness of breath (34.0%) and persistent cough (23.6%) were long-lasting, and vaccines showed efficacy against fever in lung cancer patients. Humoral responses were higher in full or booster vaccinated patients than those unvaccinated (p < .05 for all four antibodies), and the enhanced response persisted for at least 7 months. T cell response to Omicron was higher than WT peptides (21.3 vs. 16.0 SFUs/106 PBMCs, p = .0093). Moreover, 38 (9.74%) patients were reinfected, which had lower antibody responses than non-reinfected patients (all p < .05), and those patients of unvaccinated at late stage receiving anti-cancer immunotherapy alone were at high risk of reinfection. Collectively, these data demonstrate the Omicron infection induces a high and durable immune response in vaccinated patients with lung cancer, which protects vaccinated patients from reinfection.

Enhancing compound druggability in the lead discovery phase could considerably shorten the discovery cycle, accelerating insecticides research and development. The Insecticide Activity Prediction (IAPred) model, a novel classic artificial intelligence-based method for evaluating the potential insecticidal activity of unknown functional compounds, is introduced in this study. The IAPred model utilized 27 insecticide-likeness features from PaDEL descriptors and employed an ensemble of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms using the hard-vote mechanism, achieving an accuracy rate of 86 %. Notably, the IAPred model outperforms current models by accurately predicting the efficacy of novel insecticides such as nicofluprole, overcoming the limitations inherent in existing insecticide structures. Our research presents a practical approach for discovering and optimizing novel insecticide lead compounds quickly and efficiently.

To explore the intrinsic influence of different salinity content on aniline biodegradation system in high temperature condition of 35±1 °C, six groups at various salinity concentration (0.0%-5.0%) were applied. The results showed that the salinity exerted insignificant impact on aniline removal performance. The low-level salinity (0.5%-1.5%) stimulated the nitrogen metabolism performance. The G5-2.5% had excellent adaptability to salinity while the nitrogen removal capacity of G6-5.0% was almost lost. Moreover, high throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the g__norank_f__NS9_marine_group, g__Thauera and g__unclassified_f__Rhodobacteraceae proliferated wildly and established positive correlation each other in low salinity systems. The g__SM1A02 occupying the dominant position in G5 ensured the nitrification performance. In contrast, the Rhodococcus possessing great survival advantage in tremendous osmotic pressure competed with most functional genus, triggering the collapse of nitrogen metabolism capacity in G6. This work provided valuable guidance for the aniline wastewater treatment under salinity stress in high temperature condition.

Methamphetamine (Meth) is a potent psychostimulant with well-established hepatotoxicity. Gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have been reported to yield beneficial effects on the liver. In this study, we aim to further reveal the mechanisms of Meth-induced hepatic injuries and investigate the potential protective effects of SCFAs. Herein, mice were intraperitoneally injected with 15 mg/kg Meth to induce hepatic injuries. The composition of fecal microbiota and SCFAs was profiled using 16 S rRNA sequencing and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, respectively. Subsequently, SCFAs supplementation was performed to evaluate the protective effects against hepatic injuries. Additionally, Sigma-1 receptor knockout (S1R-/-) mice and fluvoxamine (Flu), an agonist of S1R, were introduced to investigate the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of SCFAs. Our results showed that Meth activated S1R and induced hepatic autophagy, inflammation, and oxidative stress by stimulating the MAPK/ERK pathway. Meanwhile, Meth disrupted SCFAs product-related microbiota, leading to a reduction in fecal SCFAs (especially Acetic acid and Propanoic acid). Accompanied by the optimization of gut microbiota, SCFAs supplementation normalized S1R expression and ameliorated Meth-induced hepatic injuries by repressing the MAPK/ERK pathway. Effectively, S1R knockout repressed Meth-induced activation of the MAPK/ERK pathway and further ameliorated hepatic injuries. Finally, the overexpression of S1R stimulated the MAPK/ERK pathway and yielded comparable adverse phenotypes to Meth administration. These findings suggest that Meth-induced hepatic injuries relied on the activation of S1R, which could be alleviated by SCFAs supplementation. Our study confirms the crucial role of S1R in Meth-induced hepatic injuries for the first time and provides a potential preemptive therapy.

Pd-PEPPSI complexes of N-(4-indolyl)-N'-phenylimidazol-2-ylidene (IIn) ligands with a 5-isopropyl-4-indolyl moiety are synthesized and evaluated in heteroarene C-H arylation, Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions. The IIn-Pd complex bearing a 3,5-diisopropyl-4-indolyl substituent (C5) exhibits the best catalytic activity in this series and substantially outperforms commercial precatalyst PEPPSI-Pd-IPr. The results also suggest that the alkyl group at position 3 of the 4-indolyl moiety shows stronger impacts than that at position 5.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the effects of online education for practical skills among nursing students. METHODS: This research was done by searching PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science electronic databases from inception to August 18, 2023, to identify English-language articles. Data extraction, quality assessment, and literature screening were carried out independently by two researchers. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Methodological Items for Nonrandomized Studies (MINORS) tool were used to assess the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.3 software. RESULTS: Eighteen studies involving 2274 nursing students met the inclusion criteria. Nursing students' skills (SMD = 0.43, 95 % CI [0.33, 0.54], P<0.00001), knowledge (SMD = 0.16, 95 % CI (0.02, 0.30], P = 0.02), satisfaction (SMD = 0.29, 95 % CI (0.10, 0.47], P < 0.01), and confidence (SMD = 0.56, 95 % CI [0.29, 0.83], P < 0.0001) were all significantly improved by the online teaching intervention compared with traditional face-to-face instruction. Self-efficacy (SMD = 0.1, 95 % CI [-0.13, 0.33], P = 0.41) was also improved, but the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Online learning is a novel and efficient approach to teaching practical skills to nursing students. Online education can enhance students' knowledge, skills, confidence, and learning satisfaction, and it is superior to traditional classroom instruction. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for the development of standardized online teaching techniques and assessment metrics.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo remains a challenging condition to treat. Fire needle therapy, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, has potential as an alternative therapeutic strategy. However, rigorous evidence on its efficacy is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fire needle therapy, alone and combined with topical tacrolimus ointment, for non-segmental stable vitiligo. METHODS: In this 6-month randomized self-controlled trial, 35 vitiligo patients were enrolled, providing three similar lesions each. Lesions were randomly allocated to receive fire needle monotherapy, 0.1% tacrolimus ointment monotherapy, or combined fire needle and tacrolimus ointment therapy. The main outcome was change in vitiligo surface area. RESULTS: In total, 29 patients completed the 6-month follow-up. The combination therapy group showed significantly greater reductions in vitiligo surface area compared to monotherapy groups starting at months 4 and 5. By the end of the study, combination therapy resulted in remarkably higher repigmentation responses, with 89.7% of lesions showing at least mild (≥25%) repigmentation and 51.7% showing good (≥50%) repigmentation. This significantly exceeded the outcomes with topical tacrolimus ointment alone, which only achieved 6.9% mild response and 6.9% good response. Fire needle monotherapy also demonstrated steady repigmentation over time, with 69% of lesions attaining a mild response by month 6. Importantly, no major adverse events occurred. CONCLUSION: This study provides promising preliminary evidence supporting the use of fire needle therapy, alone or in combination with topical tacrolimus ointment, for inducing repigmentation in non-segmental stable vitiligo. As a non-pharmacological approach, fire needle therapy warrants further study as an alternative vitiligo treatment.

As a translucent functional gel with biodegradability, non-toxicity and acid resistance, gellan gum has been widely used in probiotic packaging, drug delivery, wound dressing, metal ion adsorption and other fields in recent years. Because of its remarkable gelation characteristics, gellan gum is suitable as the shell material of microcapsules to encapsulate functional substances, by which the functional components can improve stability and achieve delayed release. In recent years, many academically or commercially reliable products have rapidly emerged, but there is still a lack of relevant reports on in-depth research and systematic summaries regarding the process of microcapsule formation and its corresponding mechanisms. To address this challenge, this review focuses on the formation process and applications of gellan gum-based microcapsules, and details the commonly used preparation methods in microcapsule production. Additionally, it explores the impact of factors such as ion types, ion strength, temperature, pH, and others present in the solution on the performance of the microcapsules. On this basis, it summarizes and analyzes the prospects of gellan gum-based microcapsule products. The comprehensive insights from this review are expected to provide inspiration and design ideas for researchers.

Efficient and accurate reactive force fields (e.g., ReaxFF) are pivotal for large-scale atomistic simulations to comprehend microscopic combustion processes. ReaxFF has been extensively utilized to describe chemical reactions in condensed phases, but most existing ReaxFF models rely on quantum mechanical (QM) data nearly two decades old, particularly in hydrocarbon systems, constraining their accuracy and applicability. Addressing this gap, we introduce a reparametrized ReaxFFCHO-S22 for C/H/O systems, tailored for studying the pyrolysis and combustion of hydrocarbon fuel. Our approach involves high-level QM benchmarks and large database construction for C/H/O systems, global ReaxFF parameter optimization, and molecular dynamics simulations of typical hydrocarbon fuels. Density functional theory (DFT) computations utilized the M06-2X functional at the meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) level with a large basis set (6-311++G**). Our new ReaxFFCHO-S22 model exhibits a minimum 10% enhancement in accuracy compared to the previous ReaxFF models for a large variety of hydrocarbon molecules. This advanced ReaxFFCHO-S22 not only enables efficient large-scale studies on the microscopic chemical reactions of more complex hydrocarbon fuel but also can extend to biofuels, energetic materials, polymers, and other pertinent systems, thus serving as a valuable tool for studying chemical reaction dynamics of the large-scale hydrocarbon condensed phase at an atomistic level.
