OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins in rats with intrauterine adhesions (IUA), so as to explore the possible mechanisms of EA in repairing endometrial damage in IUA. METHODS: Female SD rats were randomly divided into blank, model, EA, and ICG-001 groups, with 10 rats in each group. The IUA model was established by using mechanical scraping combined with lipopolysaccharide infection for double injury. In the EA group, "Guanyuan" (CV4) was needled and EA (2 Hz/15 Hz, 1-2 mA) was applied to "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Sanyinjiao"(SP6) on both sides. In the ICG-001 group, ICG-001 (5 mg/kg), the inhibitor of ß-catenin was intraperitoneally injected. After intervention, samples were taken from 5 rats in each group, and uterine endometrium morphology, endometrial thickness, and gland counts were observed using HE staining. Masson staining was used to assess the degree of fibrosis in the endometrial tissue. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the positive expression of transforming growth factor ß1 (TGF-ß1), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin (FN), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), type I collagen (Col- Ⅰ), glycogen synthase kinase-3ß (GSK-3ß), ß-catenin, E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and Vimentin in the endometrial tissue. Western blot was used to detect the relative expression of GSK-3ß, ß-catenin, E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and Vimentin proteins in the endometrial tissue. Another 5 rats from each group were placed in cages with male rats after intervention to record the number of embryo implantations. RESULTS: Necrosis and loss of endometrial tissue in the model group observed after HE staining were alleviated in the EA group, better than those in the ICG-001 group. Compared with the blank group, the numbers of glands and endometrial thickness in the uterine endometrial tissue, relative expression and positive expression of E-cadherin and GSK-3ß proteins in the uterine endometrial tissue, and embryo implantation numbers were reduced(P<0.000 1, P<0.001, P<0.01) in the model group, while fibrosis area ratio in the uterine endometrial tissue, TGF- ß 1, α -SMA, FN, CTGF, Col- Ⅰ positive expressions, N-cadherin, Vimentin, and ß-catenin proteins expression and positive expression were increased(P<0.000 1, P<0.001, P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the number of glands and endometrial thickness, E-cadherin and GSK-3ß proteins expression and positive expression, and embryo implantation numbers were increased (P<0.001, P<0.05, P<0.01) in the EA and ICG-001 groups, while the fibrosis area ratio in the uterine endometrial tissue, TGF-ß1, α-SMA, FN, CTGF, Col- Ⅰ positive expression, and N-cadherin, Vimentin, and ß-catenin proteins expression and positive expression were decreased(P<0.001, P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the EA group, the differences of the above-mentioned indicators in the ICG-001 group were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: EA may reverse the EMT process and reduce the degree of fibrosis in endometrial tissue by inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, thereby promoting the repair of endometrial damage in IUA.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), accounts for 30-40% of newly diagnosed lymphomas, has an overall cure rate of approximately 60%. Despite previous reports suggesting a negative prognostic association between CCND3 mutations and Burkitt lymphoma, their prognostic implications in DLBCL remain controversial. To investigate this, we evaluated CCND3 mutation status in 2059 DLBCL patient samples from four database (integrated cohort) and additional 167 DLBCL patient samples in our center (JSPH cohort). The mutation was identified in 5.5% (113/2059) of the cases in the integrated cohort, with 86% (97/113) found in exon 5. Furthermore, P284, R271, I290 and Q276 are described as CCND3 mutation hotspots. CCND3 mutation was associated with decreased overall survival (OS) in the integrated cohort (P = 0.0407). Further subgroup analysis revealed that patients diagnosed as EZB subtype DLBCL by LymphGen algorithm with CCND3 mutations had poorer OS than patients diagnosed as EZB subtype without CCND3 mutations (P = 0.0140). Using the next-generation sequencing (NGS) in the JSPH cohort, it was found that both cell cycle and DNA replication pathways were highly upregulated in patients with CCND3 mutations. Our results suggest that CCND3 mutations can serve as a novel prognostic factor in DLBCL pathogenesis. Consequently, the development of personalized therapeutic strategies for DLBCL patients with CCND3 mutations might enhance their prognosis.

We were attracted to the therapeutic potential of inhibiting Casitas B-lineage lymphoma proto-oncogene-b (Cbl-b), a RING E3 ligase that plays a critical role in regulating the activation of T cells. However, given that only protein-protein interactions were involved, it was unclear whether inhibition by a small molecule would be a viable approach. After screening an ∼6 billion member DNA-encoded library (DEL) using activated Cbl-b, we identified compound 1 as a hit for which the cis-isomer (2) was confirmed by biochemical and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays. Our hit optimization effort was greatly accelerated when we obtained a cocrystal structure of 2 with Cbl-b, which demonstrated induced binding at the substrate binding site, namely, the Src homology-2 (SH2) domain. This was quite noteworthy given that there are few reports of small molecule inhibitors that bind to SH2 domains and block protein-protein interactions. Structure- and property-guided optimization led to compound 27, which demonstrated measurable cell activity, albeit only at high concentrations.

The protocol is a mild, convenient, ligand-free, and scalable synthesis method that can be compatible with various nitro compounds and alcohols. Nitrone is a significant multifunctional platform synthon which can be synthesized directly and efficiently via this tactic from commercially available and cheap raw materials.

This study aimed to explore naringin's potential to promote the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 under oxidative stress. It delved into Nar's connection with the Wnt/ß-catenin and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. Initially, 2911 OP-related genes were analyzed, revealing close ties with the PI3K/Akt and Wnt pathways alongside oxidative stress. Nar's potential targets-ESR1, HSP90AA1, and ESR2-were identified through various databases and molecular docking studies confirmed Nar's affinity with ESR1 and HSP90AA1. Experiments established optimal concentrations for Nar and H2O2. H2O2 at 0.3 mmol/L damaged MC3T3-E1 cells, alleviated by 0.1 µmol/L Nar. Successful establishment of oxidative stress models was confirmed by DCFH-DA probe and NO detection. Nar exhibited the ability to enhance osteogenic differentiation, counteracting oxidative damage. It notably increased osteoblast-related protein expression in MC3T3-E1 cells under oxidative stress. The study found Nar's positive influence on GSK-3ß phosphorylation, ß-catenin accumulation, and pathway-related protein expression, all critical in promoting osteogenic differentiation. The research concluded that Nar effectively promotes osteogenic differentiation in MC3T3-E1 cells under oxidative stress. It achieved this by activating the Wnt/ß-catenin and PI3K/Akt pathways, facilitating GSK-3ß phosphorylation, and enhancing ß-catenin accumulation, pivotal in osteogenesis.

The reconstruction of neural function and recovery of chronic damage following traumatic brain injury (TBI) remain significant clinical challenges. Exosomes derived from neural stem cells (NSCs) offer various benefits in TBI treatment. Numerous studies confirmed that appropriate preconditioning methods enhanced the targeted efficacy of exosome therapy. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) possesses immunomodulatory capabilities and is widely involved in neurological disorders. In this study, IFN-γ was employed for preconditioning NSCs to enhance the efficacy of exosome (IFN-Exo, IE) for TBI. miRNA sequencing revealed the potential of IFN-Exo in promoting neural differentiation and modulating inflammatory responses. Through low-temperature 3D printing, IFN-Exo was combined with collagen/chitosan (3D-CC-IE) to preserve the biological activity of the exosome. The delivery of exosomes via biomaterial scaffolds benefited the retention and therapeutic potential of exosomes, ensuring that they could exert long-term effects at the injury site. The 3D-CC-IE scaffold exhibited excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Subsequently, 3D-CC-IE scaffold significantly improved impaired motor and cognitive functions after TBI in rat. Histological results showed that 3D-CC-IE scaffold markedly facilitated the reconstruction of damaged neural tissue and promoted endogenous neurogenesis. Further mechanistic validation suggested that IFN-Exo alleviated neuroinflammation by modulating the MAPK/mTOR signaling pathway. In summary, the results of this study indicated that 3D-CC-IE scaffold engaged in long-term pathophysiological processes, fostering neural function recovery after TBI, offering a promising regenerative therapy avenue.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a common mental illness with high morbidity and disability. The discovery of laboratory biomarkers has progressed slowly, resulting in suboptimal diagnosis and treatment of AUD. This study aimed to identify promising biomarkers, as well as the potential miRNA-mRNA networks associated with AUD pathogenesis. RNA sequencing was performed on plasma-derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from AUD patients and healthy controls (HCs) to harvest miRNAs expression profiles. Machine learning (ML) models were built to screen characteristic miRNAs, whose target mRNAs were analyzed using TargetScan, miRanda and miRDB databases. Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets (GSE181804 and GSE180722) providing postmortem hippocampal gene expression profiles of AUD subjects were mined. A total of 247 differentially expressed (DE) plasma-derived sEVs miRNAs and 122 DE hippocampal mRNAs were obtained. Then, 22 overlapping sEVs miRNAs with high importance scores were gained by intersecting 5 ML models. As a result, we established a putative sEVs miRNA-hippocampal mRNA network that can effectively distinguish AUD patients from HCs. In conclusion, we proposed 5 AUD-representative sEVs miRNAs (hsa-miR-144-5p, hsa-miR-182-5p, hsa-miR-142-5p, hsa-miR-7-5p, and hsa-miR-15b-5p) that may participate in the pathogenesis of AUD by modulating downstream target hippocampal genes. These findings may provide novel insights into the diagnosis and treatment of AUD.

We herein report a rare case of simultaneous intrauterine molar pregnancy and tubal pregnancy. A woman of childbearing age who had never been pregnant underwent an ultrasound examination 70 days after the onset of menopause. She had a history of ovulation induction. The ultrasound findings suggested a partial hydatidiform mole. She was then pathologically confirmed to have a complete hydatidiform mole after uterine suction dilation and curettage. On postoperative day 4, an ultrasound examination before discharge showed an inhomogeneous mass in the left adnexal region with mild lower abdominal pain. On postoperative day 17, the blood human chorionic gonadotropin level did not drop as expected, and a follow-up examination still indicated a mass in the left adnexal region. We were unable to rule out an ectopic hydatidiform mole. Hysteroscopy with laparoscopic exploration of the left adnexal mass and salpingotomy suggested a diagnosis of intrauterine hydatidiform mole combined with left tubal pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence supports the idea that inflammation may contribute to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Duloxetine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, exhibits anti-inflammatory effects both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated the impact of duloxetine on changes in serum proinflammatory cytokine levels among individuals diagnosed with MDD. METHODS: A cohort of 23 drug-naïve individuals diagnosed with MDD and 23 healthy controls were included in this study. The severity of depressive symptoms was evaluated using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24). A panel of 7 proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), were quantified using multiplex Luminex assays. The levels of serum cytokines in healthy controls and patients with MDD were compared at baseline. All patients received duloxetine at a dosage range of 40-60 mg/day for a duration of 4 weeks. The HAMD-24 scores and serum cytokine levels were compared before and after duloxetine treatment. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, patients with MDD had significantly greater levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, TNF-α, and IFN-γ (P < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant decrease in HAMD-24 scores observed pre- and post-treatment (t = 13.161, P < 0.001). Furthermore, after 4 weeks of treatment, the serum levels of IL-8 (t = 3.605, P = 0.002), IL-12 (t = 2.559, P = 0.018), and IFN-γ (t = 3.567, P = 0.002) decreased significantly. However, there were no significant differences in other cytokines, including IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-α, before and after treatment (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These findings present compelling evidence, potentially for the first time, indicating that duloxetine treatment may effectively reduce the serum concentrations of IL-8, IL-12, and IFN-γ in individuals diagnosed with MDD. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear and warrant further investigation.

Previous studies have indicated a link between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), but the findings have been disputed. By conducting a real-world follow-up study, we can monitor the development of diseases and confirm the connection between NLR and IFG. A total of 1168 patients without IFG or T2DM were followed up for six years. At baseline, participants' NLR levels, fasting plasma glucose and other clinical characteristics were recorded. During the follow-up period, NLR levels and the prevalence of IFG were recorded. Ultimately, 45 individuals were lost to follow-up, leaving 1,123 participants for analysis. Using Group-Based Trajectory Modeling (GBTM), the sample was divided into three groups. The prevalence of IFG in the three groups was 12.1%, 19.4%, and 20.85%, respectively. Compared with the low-level NLR group, the hazard ratio of IFG in the moderate-level NLR group and high-level NLR group were 1.628 (1.109-2.390) and 1.575 (1.001-2.497), respectively. There was a significant interaction effect of BMI and NLR on the risk of IFG (P < 0.001). In this real-world follow-up study, we observed a positive association between NLR and the risk of IFG, with this relationship being exacerbated by obesity status.

Nanomaterial-microorganism hybrid systems (NMHSs), integrating semiconductor nanomaterials with microorganisms, present a promising platform for broadband solar energy harvesting, high-efficiency carbon reduction, and sustainable chemical production. While studies underscore its potential in diverse solar-to-chemical energy conversions, prevailing NMHSs grapple with suboptimal energy conversion efficiency. Such limitations stem predominantly from an insufficient systematic exploration of the mechanisms dictating solar energy flow. This review provides a systematic overview of the notable advancements in this nascent field, with a particular focus on the discussion of three pivotal steps of energy flow: solar energy capture, cross-membrane energy transport, and energy conversion into chemicals. While key challenges faced in each stage are independently identified and discussed, viable solutions are correspondingly postulated. In view of the interplay of the three steps in affecting the overall efficiency of solar-to-chemical energy conversion, subsequent discussions thus take an integrative and systematic viewpoint to comprehend, analyze and improve the solar energy flow in the current NMHSs of different configurations, and highlighting the contemporary techniques that can be employed to investigate various aspects of energy flow within NMHSs. Finally, a concluding section summarizes opportunities for future research, providing a roadmap for the continued development and optimization of NMHSs.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate is a commonly used herbicide worldwide and is purportedly associated with multiple health effects. Research assessing the association of glyphosate concentrations with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and the prevalence of diabetes is scarce. We sought to evaluate the association between urinary glyphosate levels and HbA1c levels and the prevalence of diabetes. METHODS: A total of 2,745 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2016 were included in this study. Generalized linear models (GLM) were applied to evaluate the associations of glyphosate concentrations with HbA1c levels and the prevalence of diabetes. The dose-response relationship was examined using restricted cubic splines (RCS). RESULTS: Significantly positive correlations of urinary glyphosate concentrations with HbA1c levels (percentage change: 1.45; 95% CI: 0.95, 1.96; P < 0.001) and the prevalence of diabetes (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.24, 1.68; P < 0.001) were found after adjustment. Compared with the lowest quartile of glyphosate levels, the highest quartile was positively associated with HbA1c levels (percentage change: 4.19; 95% CI: 2.54, 5.85; P < 0.001) and the prevalence of diabetes (OR: 1.89; 95% CI: 1.37, 2.63; P < 0.001). The RCS curves demonstrated a monotonically increasing dose-response relationship between urinary glyphosate levels and the prevalence of diabetes and HbA1c levels. CONCLUSIONS: Urinary glyphosate concentrations are positively associated with HBA1c levels and the prevalence of diabetes. To verify our findings, additional large-scale prospective investigations are required.

Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LDH) is a common and frequently-occurring disease, which usually causes lumbar and leg pain. Studies have shown that acupuncture can improve the symptoms of LDH patients. In the present paper, we summarize the progress of researches on the mechanisms of acupuncture underlying improvement of symptoms of LDH in recent 10 years from 1) delaying the intervertibral disc degeneration (by down-regulating the expressions of matrix metalloproteinase ï¼»MMPï¼½-3 and MMP-4, up-regulating the expressions of diosaccharides and polyglycoprotein, inhibiting apoptosis and promoting mitochondrial autophagy of nucleus pulposus cells, etc.), 2) maintaining spinal column stability (by relieving rachiasmus and improving lumbar flexor and extensor muscle strength, lowering the degree of polyfidus edema and fat infiltration, and restoring the biomechanics of the spine), 3) regulating inflammation (by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory factors and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory factors, etc.), 4) regulating immune response (by promoting the activity of T cells and other immune cells, lowering serum levels of MMP-3, transforming growth factor-ß1 and prostaglandin E2, raising serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM to improve immune function ), 5) modulating neural structure and function (by promoting myelin regeneration of sciatic nerve fibers, and reducing the edema of Schwann cells' cytoplasm and mitochondria, and improving neural ultrastructure, and sensory and motor functions of peripheral nerves, etc.), 6) relieving lumbar pain (by down-regulating expression of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase and activation of lumbar spinal cord glial cells, blocking nociceptive signal conduction, regulating the levels of pain-related factors, etc.), and 7) improving local microcirculation. These results may provide scientific evidence for acupuncture treatment of LDH.

Paramyxoviruses are a group of single-stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses, some of which are responsible for acute human disease, including parainfluenza virus, measles virus, Nipah virus and Hendra virus. In recent years, a large number of novel paramyxoviruses, particularly members of the genus Jeilongvirus, have been discovered in wild mammals, suggesting that the diversity of paramyxoviruses may be underestimated. Here we used hemi-nested reverse transcription PCR to obtain 190 paramyxovirus sequences from 969 small mammals in Hubei Province, Central China. These newly identified paramyxoviruses were classified into four clades: genera Jeilongvirus, Morbillivirus, Henipavirus and Narmovirus, with most of them belonging to the genus Jeilongvirus. Using Illumina sequencing and Sanger sequencing, we successfully recovered six near-full-length genomes with different genomic organizations, revealing the more complex genome content of paramyxoviruses. Co-divergence analysis of jeilongviruses and their known hosts indicates that host-switching occurred more frequently in the evolutionary histories of the genus Jeilongvirus. Together, our findings demonstrate the high prevalence of paramyxoviruses in small mammals, especially jeilongviruses, and highlight the diversity of paramyxoviruses and their genome content, as well as the evolution of jeilongviruses.

Introduction: Drip irrigation under mulch film promotes a non-uniform salinity distribution in salt fields. The effect of different N application methods on the growth and yield of cotton under drip irrigation under mulch film conditions in eastern coastal saline-alkaline soils in China remain remained unclear. Methods: A randomized complete block design was used in the experiment. Three N application methods were assigned: N applied under mulch film (low-salinity area; UM), N applied between mulch films (high-salinity area; BM), and half N applied under mulch film and half between mulch films (HUHB). Results: Plant height, photosynthesis, Chl content, boll load, biomass, boll weight and boll density under UM were all significantly higher than those under the other two treatments. The N absorption of UM was higher than in the other two treatments, which might be attributed to the expression of GHNRT1.5 and GHNRT2.1. The net NO3- influx in the roots in UM increased significantly compared with that in BM. The yield and FNRE of UM were 3.9% and 9.1%, respectively, and were 26.52% and 90.36% higher than under HUHB and BM treatments. Discussion: UM not only improved cotton yield but also alleviated the pollution of N residue on drip irrigation under mulch film conditions in salt areas.

The clinical implications of CSF-ctDNA positivity in newly diagnosed diffuse large B cell lymphoma (ND-DLBCL) remains largely unexplored. One hundred ND-DLBCL patients were consecutively enrolled as training cohort and another 26 ND-DLBCL patients were prospectively enrolled in validation cohort. CSF-ctDNA positivity (CSF(+)) was identified in 25 patients (25.0%) in the training cohort and 7 patients (26.9%) in the validation cohort, extremely higher than CNS involvement rate detected by conventional methods. Patients with mutations of CARD11, JAK2, ID3, and PLCG2 were more predominant with CSF(+) while FAT4 mutations were negatively correlated with CSF(+). The downregulation of PI3K-AKT signaling, focal adhesion, actin cytoskeleton, and tight junction pathways were enriched in CSF(+) ND-DLBCL. Furthermore, pretreatment CSF(+) was significantly associated with poor outcomes. Three risk factors, including high CSF protein level, high plasma ctDNA burden, and involvement of high-risk sites were used to predict the risk of CSF(+) in ND-DLBCL. The sensitivity and specificity of pretreatment CSF-ctDNA to predict CNS relapse were 100% and 77.3%. Taken together, we firstly present the prevalence and the genomic and transcriptomic landscape for CSF-ctDNA(+) DLBCL and highlight the importance of CSF-ctDNA as a noninvasive biomarker in detecting and monitoring of CSF infiltration and predicting CNS relapse in DLBCL.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the impact of nursing interventions on the rehabilitation outcomes of patients after lumbar spine surgery and to provide effective references for future postoperative care for patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery. METHODS: The study included two groups: a control group receiving routine care and an observation group receiving additional comprehensive nursing care. The comprehensive care encompassed postoperative rehabilitation, pain, psychological, dietary management, and discharge planning. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Short-Form 36 (SF-36) Health Survey, self-rating depression scale (SDS) and self-rating anxiety scale(SAS) were used to assess physiological and psychological recovery. Blood albumin, haemoglobin, neutrophil counts, white blood cell counts, red blood cell counts, inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-γ) were measured, and the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions was also recorded. RESULTS: Patients in the observation group exhibited significantly improved VAS, ODI, SF-36, SDS and SAS scores assessments post-intervention compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, levels of IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-γ were more favorable in the observation group post-intervention (P < 0.05), indicating a reduction in inflammatory response. There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions between the groups (P > 0.05), suggesting that the comprehensive nursing interventions did not increase the risk of adverse effects. CONCLUSION: Comprehensive nursing interventions have a significant impact on the postoperative recovery outcomes of patients with LSS, alleviating pain, reducing inflammation levels, and improving the overall quality of patient recovery without increasing the patient burden. Therefore, in clinical practice, it is important to focus on comprehensive nursing interventions for patients with LSS to improve their recovery outcomes and quality of life.

Utilizing city-level data from China, the paper employs a spatial econometric analysis to investigate the impact of fiscal decentralization on urban pollution. Empirical evidence indicates: (1) In the context of the emphasis of ecological civilization construction in China, an increase of fiscal autonomy for local governments is conducive to mitigating urban pollution intensity. Specifically, fiscal decentralization in one city not only promotes a reduction in local pollution intensity but alleviates environmental pollution problems in adjacent cities through spatial spillover effects. (2) Industrial structure upgrading and green technology progress become crucial measures for local governments to realize pollution reduction targets through fiscal expenditure. (3) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the positive significance of decentralization is most prominent in the eastern China, while local governments with fiscal autonomy in central region tend to transfer pollution to neighboring cities. (4) There is a threshold characteristic for fiscal decentralization to promote a reduction in urban pollution intensity, and its marginal effect becomes more significant accompanied by continuous introduction of sophisticated foreign direct investment. Finally, the paper summarizes the potential significance of fiscal decentralization among Chinese local governments against the background of "Chinese-style decentralization" and proposes corresponding policy recommendations.

Background: Medication overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary headache disorder that leads to pronounced disability and decreased quality of life. Available therapeutic options for MOH are limited, and many are only effective in a subset of individuals. Although the existing evidence is limited, acupuncture may be an effective treatment option for MOH. Case presentation: A 45-year-old Chinese woman presented to the Medical Acupuncture Department of Sanming Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital on April 11, 2022. Thirty-five years ago, she had episodic migraines. The frequency increased over time, however, and for the past 10 years she has had daily headaches. These headaches were characterized by daily persistent throbbing pain on the left side of the patient's head, accompanied by photophobia, phonophobia, neck stiffness, dizziness, and fatigue. Without painkillers, the patient rated her headache intensity as 9 out of 10 on a visual analog scale (0 = no pain, 10 = intolerable pain), and reported that the headaches lasted for up to 7 days or more. With painkillers, the headaches had a reduced intensity (5 of 10), but persisted. The patient had taken 1-3.5 compound aminopyrine phenacetin tablets daily for more than 5 years. Standard conservative therapy (patient education, medication withdrawal, and behavioral intervention) for MOH had failed to improve her symptoms. Before her visit, the patient had headache and engaged in short-term medication use on 30 days per month. The total monthly headache intensity score was 90. The patient's Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MSQ) score was 33 points, her Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score was 24 points, and her Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) score was 20 points. Results: After 48 acupuncture sessions over 24 weeks, the patient completely discontinued short-term analgesic use and the monthly number of headache days and headache intensity score were both reduced by 96.67 % (from 30 to 1 and 90 to 3, respectively), with no adverse effect. Compared with baseline, the MSQ, HAMD, and HAMA scores improved by 45, 17, and 16 points, respectively. At 12 months, the patient's condition remained stable and her MOH had not relapsed. Conclusion: In the context of the current literature and the present case, electroacupuncture shows promise for the long-term relief of chronic migraine with MOH when other treatments fail.
