RÉSUMÉ

The non-homeostasis of sebum secretion by the sebaceous glands in a complicated microenvironment dramatically impacts the skin health of many people in the world. However, the complexity and hydrophobicity of sebum mean a lack of diagnostic tools, which makes it challenging to determine the reason behind cortical imbalances. Herein, a biomimetic mineralized aggregates (PTL@Au and PTB@Au) strategy has been proposed, which could obtain molecular information about sebum by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The breaking of disulfide bonds leads to changes in hydrogen bonding, which transform the natural protein into amyloid-like phase transition protein with ß-sheets. It provides sites for the nucleation and crystallization of gold nanocrystals to build mineralized aggregates. The mineralized aggregates show robust adhesion stability at the interfaces of different materials through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The stabilization, hydrophobicity (contact angle: 134°), and optical transmission (75%) of the structure could result in superior SERS performance for sebum analysis. It should be noted that this enables the sebum detection of clinical samples while ensuring safety. Such generalized bionic mineralization construction and diagnosis methods also serve as an advanced paradigm for a range of biomedical applications.

RÉSUMÉ

Cooking process for food significantly impacts household air and increase exposure to endocrine disruptors such as acrylamide and, consequently, affecting human health. In the past 30 years, the transformation of cooking methods to high-temperature thermal processing has occurred widely in China. Yet the transition of cooking methods on the onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear, which may hinder health-based Sustainable Development Goals. We aimed to estimate the associations between dietary intake with different cooking methods and T2D risk. We included 14,745 participants (>20 y) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1991-2015). Food consumption was calculated using three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with both individual participant level and household food inventory. Cooking methods, including boiled, steamed, baked, griddled, stir-fried, deep-fried, and raw, were also recorded. The consumption of baked/griddle foods and deep-fried foods are positively associated with 39% and 35% higher of T2D risk by comparing the highest with the lowest categories of food consumption, respectively. The overall unhealthy cooking method for processing foods including baked/griddled and deep-fried foods was attributable for 15 million T2D cases of the total T2D burden in 2011, resulting in a medical cost of $2.7 billion and was expected to be attributable for 39 million T2D cases in 2030, producing a medical cost of $223.8 billion. Replacing one serving of deep-fried foods and baked/griddle foods with boiled/steamed foods was related to 50% and 20% lower risk of T2D, respectively. Our findings support healthy driven cooking methods for daily diet are recommended to nourish sustainable T2D prevention in China.

RÉSUMÉ

Polymeric materials such as fabric and foam have high flammability which limits their application in the field of fire protection. To this end, an organic-inorganic polymer colloid constructed from carboxymethyl chitosan and ammonium polyphosphate was used to improve the flame retardancy of flax fabric (FF) and rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) based on a "one for two" strategy. The modification processes of FF and RPUF relied on pad-dry-cure method and UV-curing technology, respectively, and the modified FF and RPUF were severally designated as CMC/APP-FF and RFR-RPUF. Flame retardancy studies showed that CMC/APP-FF and RFR-RPUF exhibited limiting oxygen index values as high as 39.4 % and 42.6 %, respectively, and both achieved self-extinguishing behavior when external ignition source was removed. Thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimetry test confirmed that CMC/APP-FF and RFR-RPUF had good charring ability and demonstrated reduced peak heat release rate values of 90.1 % and 10.8 %, respectively, distinct from before they were modified. In addition, condensed phase analysis showed that after burning, CMC/APP-FF became an integration char structure, whereas RFR-RPUF turned into a sandwiched char structure. In summary, the "one for two" strategy reported in this work provides a new insight into the economical fabrication of flame-retardant polymeric materials.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity has been linked to various detrimental health consequences. While there is established evidence of a negative correlation between seafood consumption and obesity in adults, the current research on the association between seafood intake in childhood/adolescence and the risk of obesity is lacking. Our aim was to evaluate the association between seafood intake in childhood/adolescence and the risk of obesity in a Chinese nationwide cohort. METHODS: We utilized data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) from the year of 1997 to 2015. Seafood consumption was evaluated through 3-day 24-hour recalls. In our study, overweight/obesity status was determined based on the Chinese Criteria of Overweight and Obesity in School-age Children and Adolescents (WS/T 586-2018), while abdominal obesity status was determined according to the Chinese Criteria of Waist Circumference Screening Threshold among Children and Adolescents (WS/T 611-2018). RESULTS: During an average follow-up of 7.9 years, 404 cases developed overweight/obesity among 2206 participants in the seafood-overweight/obesity analysis, while 381 cases developed abdominal obesity among 2256 participants in the seafood-abdominal-obesity analysis. The high-consumer group was associated with 35% lower risk of overweight/obesity risk and 26% lower risk of abdominal obesity after fully adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, compared with the non-consumer group. Considering different cooking methods, boiled seafood consumption was associated with 43% lower risk of overweight/obesity and 23% lower risk of abdominal obesity in the fully adjusted model, while stir-fried seafood did not demonstrate a statistical significance. CONCLUSION: Higher intake of seafood in childhood/adolescents, particularly in a boiled way, was associated with lower obesity risk.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for pesticide application show promising potential in tobacco pest management. However, the impact of flight parameters on spray efficacy requires further investigation. Three field experiments were conducted from the rosette to the maturation stage of tobacco to systematically assess spray efficacy under varying flight heights, speeds, and application volumes. Using a multi-index weight analysis method, optimal operational parameter combinations for different tobacco growth stages were evaluated and compared with backpack electric sprayers. RESULTS: For the rosette stage, the recommended parameter is a flight speed of 5 m s-1, a flight height of 2 m, and a liquid application volume of 30 L hm-2; during the vigorous growth stage, the suggested parameter includes a flight speed of 3 m s-1, a flight height of 2 m, and a liquid application volume of 22.5 L hm-2. In the maturing stage, optimal parameter consists of a flight speed of 3 m s-1, a flight height of 3.5 m, and a liquid application volume of 30 L hm-2. Furthermore, UAV spraying achieves higher droplet deposition on both sides of tobacco leaves compared to traditional electric backpack sprayers. CONCLUSIONS: Adjusting UAV spraying parameters for different tobacco growth stages is crucial. These results can provide the methods for the precise control technology of tobacco pests at different growth stages. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RÉSUMÉ

The non-equilibrium solidification process in the additive manufacturing of titanium alloy leads to special microstructures, and the resulting changes in corrosion behavior are worthy of attention. In this paper, the microstructure and electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V alloys prepared using laser powder bed melting (LPBF) and casting are systematically compared. The results show that the LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloy is composed of dominant acicular α' martensite within columnar prior ß phase, and less ß disperses have also been discovered, which is significantly different from the α + ß dual-phase structure of cast Ti6Al4V alloy. Compared to the as-cast Ti6Al4V alloy, LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloy has a thinner and unstable passive film, and exhibits slightly poorer corrosion resistance, which is mainly related to its higher porosity, a large amount of acicular α' martensite and less ß phase compared to as-cast Ti6Al4V alloy. This result proves that suitable methods should be taken to control the relative density and phase composition of LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloys before application.

RÉSUMÉ

It is well-known that the presence of serial correlation may result in an inefficient or even biased estimation in time series analysis. In this paper, we consider testing serial correlation in a general d-factor model when the model errors follow the GARCH process, which is frequently used in modeling financial data. Two empirical likelihood-based testing statistics are suggested as a way to deal with problems that might come up with infinite variance. Both statistics are shown to be chi-squared distributed asymptotically under mild conditions. Simulations confirm the excellent finite-sample performance of both tests. Finally, to emphasize the importance of using our tests, we explore the impact of the exchange rate on the stock return using both monthly and daily data from eight countries.

RÉSUMÉ

Introduction: Promoting enterprises' digital transformation is fundamental to implementing the digital China strategy and realizing high-quality development. Methods: Taking China's A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2021 as a research sample, this study examines the impact of sharing auditors with customers on the digital transformation of suppliers. Results: The results show that sharing auditors with customers can promote suppliers' digital transformation, and this promotion effect is stronger among suppliers with weaker bargaining power, lower media attention, and higher auditor industry expertise. In terms of the mechanism of action, sharing auditors with customers can help strengthen the supplier's supervision, alleviate suppliers' financing constraints, and thus facilitate their digital transformation. Further research finds that when suppliers share auditors with their customers, suppliers' digital transformation helps promote innovation. Discussion: The research conclusion provides effective empirical evidence for alleviating the dilemma of digital transformation of enterprises.

RÉSUMÉ

Tumor vaccines, an important part of immunotherapy, prevent cancer or kill existing tumor cells by activating or restoring the body's own immune system. Currently, various formulations of tumor vaccines have been developed, including cell vaccines, tumor cell membrane vaccines, tumor DNA vaccines, tumor mRNA vaccines, tumor polypeptide vaccines, virus-vectored tumor vaccines, and tumor-in-situ vaccines. There are also multiple delivery systems for tumor vaccines, such as liposomes, cell membrane vesicles, viruses, exosomes, and emulsions. In addition, to decrease the risk of tumor immune escape and immune tolerance that may exist with a single tumor vaccine, combination therapy of tumor vaccines with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, cytokines, CAR-T therapy, or photoimmunotherapy is an effective strategy. Given the critical role of tumor vaccines in immunotherapy, here, we look back to the history of tumor vaccines, and we discuss the antigens, adjuvants, formulations, delivery systems, mechanisms, combination therapy, and future directions of tumor vaccines.

RÉSUMÉ

Photothermal CO2 conversion to ethanol offers a sustainable solution for achieving net-zero carbon management. However, serious carrier recombination and high C-C coupling energy barrier cause poor performance in ethanol generation. Here, we report a Cu/Cu2Se-Cu2O heterojunction-nanosheet array, showcasing a good ethanol yield under visible-near-infrared light without external heating. The Z-scheme Cu2Se-Cu2O heterostructure provides spatially separated sites for CO2 reduction and water oxidation with boosted carrier transport efficiency. The microreactors induced by Cu2Se nanosheets improve the local concentration of intermediates (CH3* and CO*), thereby promoting C-C coupling process. Photothermal effect of Cu2Se nanosheets elevates system's temperature to around 200 °C. Through synergizing electron and heat flows, we achieve an ethanol generation rate of 149.45 µmol g-1 h-1, with an electron selectivity of 48.75% and an apparent quantum yield of 0.286%. Our work can serve as inspiration for developing photothermal catalysts for CO2 conversion into multi-carbon chemicals using solar energy.

RÉSUMÉ

Background: Limited research has explored the association between dietary soy products and colorectal polyps and adenomas, with insufficient attention given to cooking methods and subtypes of polyps. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the relationship between soy intake, its cooking methods, and the risk of colorectal polyps and adenomas within a high-incidence population of colorectal cancer (CRC) in China. Methods: Data were derived from 14,903 participants aged 40-80 years, enrolled in the extended Lanxi Pre-colorectal Cancer Cohort (LP3C) between March 2018 and December 2022. This cross-sectional study is based on the participants' baseline information. Long-term dietary information was collected through a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and colorectal polyps and adenomas were identified through electronic colonoscopy. Employing multivariate logistic regression, results were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results: 4,942 cases of colorectal polyps and 2,678 cases of adenomas were ascertained. A significant positive association was found between total soy intake and the occurrence of polyps/adenomas. Considering cooking methods, a notable increase in polyp risk was associated with the consumption of fried soys while no association was detected for boiled or marinated soys. Furthermore, total soy intake demonstrated associations with large and multiple polyps, polyps Yamade-typed less than II, and polyps across all anatomical subsites. Conclusion: Within the high-risk CRC population in China, increased soy product intake was linked to a higher risk of polyps, primarily attributed to the consumption of fried soys. This suggests that modifying cooking methods to avoid fried soys may serve as a preventive strategy for colorectal polyps.

RÉSUMÉ

Plants of the Meliaceae family have long attracted researchers' interest due to their various insecticidal activities, with triterpenes being the main active ingredients. In this paper, we discuss 93 triterpenoids with insecticidal activity from 37 insecticidal plant species of 15 genera (Munronia, Neobeguea, Pseudocedrela, Nymania, Quivisia, Ruagea, Dysoxylum, Soymida, Lansium, Sandoricum, Walsura, Trichilia, Swietenia, Turraea, and Xylocarpus) in the family Meliaceae. Among these genera, Trichilia deserves further research, with twelve species possessing insecticidal activity. The 93 insecticidal molecules included 27 ring-seco limonoids (comprising 1 ring A-seco group chemical, 1 ring B-seco group chemical, 5 ring D-seco group chemicals, 14 rings A,B-seco group chemicals, 5 rings B,D-seco group chemicals, and 1 rings A,B,D-seco group chemical), 22 ring-intact limonoids (comprising 5 cedrelone-class chemicals, 6 trichilin-class chemicals, 7 havanensin-class chemicals, 2 azadirone-class chemicals, 1 vilasinin-class chemical, and 1 other chemical), 33 2,30-linkage chemicals (comprising 25 mexicanolide-class chemicals and 8 phragmalin-class chemicals), 3 1,n-linkage-group chemicals, 3 onoceranoid-type triterpenoids, 2 apotirucallane-type terpenoids, 2 kokosanolide-type tetranortriterpenoids, and 1 cycloartane triterpene. In particular, 59 molecules showed antifeedant activity, 30 molecules exhibited poisonous effects, and 9 molecules possessed growth regulatory activity. Particularly, khayasin, beddomei lactone, 3ß,24,25-trihydroxycycloartane, humilinolides A-E and methyl-2-hydroxy-3ß-isobutyroxy-1-oxomeliac-8(30)-enate showed excellent insecticidal activities, which were comparable to that of azadirachtin and thus deserved more attention. Moreover, it was noteworthy that various chemicals (such as 12α-diacetoxywalsuranolide, 11ß,12α-diacetoxycedrelone, 1α,7α,12α-triacetoxy-4α-carbomethoxy-11ß-hydroxy-14ß,15ß-epoxyhavanensin, and 11-epi-21-hydroxytoonacilide, etc.) from Turraea showed excellent insecticidal activity. Specially, the insecticidal activity of khayasin from Neobeguea against the coconut leaf beetle were similar to that of rotenone. Therefore, it was a promising candidate insecticide for the control of the coconut leaf beetle.

RÉSUMÉ

Drug-resistant bacterial infections and their lipopolysaccharide-related inflammatory complications continue to pose significant challenges in traditional treatments. Inspired by the rapid initiation of resident macrophages to form aggregates for efficient antibacterial action, this study proposes a multifunctional and enhanced antibacterial strategy through the construction of novel biomimetic cell membrane polypeptide nanonets (R-DPB-TA-Ce). The design involves the fusion of end-terminal lipidated polypeptides containing side-chain cationic boronic acid groups (DNPLBA) with cell membrane intercalation engineering (R-DPB), followed by coordination with the tannic acid-cerium complex (TA-Ce) to assemble into a biomimetic nanonet through boronic acid-polyphenol-metal ion interactions. In addition to the ability of RAW 264.7 macrophages cell membrane components' (R) ability to neutralize lipopolysaccharide (LPS), R-DPB-TA-Ce demonstrated enhanced capture of bacteria and its LPS, leveraging nanoconfinement-enhanced multiple interactions based on the boronic acid-polyphenol nanonets skeleton combined with polysaccharide. Utilizing these advantages, indocyanine green (ICG) is further employed as a model drug for delivery, showcasing the exceptional treatment effect of R-DPB-TA-Ce as a new biomimetic assembled drug delivery system in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing promotion. Thus, this strategy of mimicking macrophage aggregates is anticipated to be further applicable to various types of cell membrane engineering for enhanced antibacterial treatment.

RÉSUMÉ

Understanding the regulation of normal erythroid development will help to develop new potential therapeutic strategies for disorders of the erythroid lineage. Cellular repressor of E1A-stimulated genes 1 (CREG1) is a glycoprotein that has been implicated in the regulation of tissue homeostasis. However, its role in erythropoiesis remains largely undefined. In this study, it is found that CREG1 expression increases progressively during erythroid differentiation. In zebrafish, creg1 mRNA is preferentially expressed within the intermediate cell mass (ICM)/peripheral blood island (PBI) region where primitive erythropoiesis occurs. Loss of creg1 leads to anemia caused by defective erythroid differentiation and excessive apoptosis of erythroid progenitors. Mechanistically, creg1 deficiency results in reduced activation of TGF-ß/Smad2 signaling pathway. Treatment with an agonist of the Smad2 pathway (IDE2) could significantly restore the defective erythroid development in creg1-/- mutants. Further, Klf1, identified as a key target gene downstream of the TGF-ß/Smad2 signaling pathway, is involved in creg1 deficiency-induced aberrant erythropoiesis. Thus, this study reveals a previously unrecognized role for Creg1 as a critical regulator of erythropoiesis, mediated at least in part by the TGF-ß/Smad2-Klf1 axis. This finding may contribute to the understanding of normal erythropoiesis and the pathogenesis of erythroid disorders.

RÉSUMÉ

Ice fractions and water states in partially frozen muscle foods greatly affect their quality. In the study, a variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (VT-NMR) with a liquid nitrogen temperature control system was employed to in situ investigate the relationship between ice fractions and temperatures and changes in water states during partial freezing and thawing of pork and shrimp. Results indicated that changes in ice fractions ranging from -2 âˆ¼ -20 °C could be divided into 3 stages including slow increase, random leap and remarkable leap. More serious damages to the structures related to immobile water occurred in shrimp than in pork, and partial freezing also caused deterioration in muscle fibres related to free water. Additionally, -2 âˆ¼ -3 °C and - 3.5 °C were the appropriate partial freezing temperatures for pork and shrimp, respectively. Therefore, the VT-NMR method possessed great potential for fundamental studies and applications of partial freezing of muscle foods.

RÉSUMÉ

Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) and their layer-stacked 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) membranes hold great potential for harvesting sustainable osmotic energy. The nascent research has yet to simultaneously achieve high ionic flux and selectivity, primarily due to inefficient ion transport dynamics. This is directly related to ultrasmall pore size (<3 nm), much smaller than the duple Debye length in the diluted electrolyte (6~20 nm), as well as low charge density (<4.5 mC m-2). Here, we introduce a π-conjugated viologen-based 2DP (V2DP) membrane possessing a large pore size of 4.5 nm, strategically enhancing the overlapping of the electric double layer, coupled with an exceptional positive surface charge density (~6 mC m-2). These characteristics enable the membrane to facilitate high anion flux while maintaining ideal selectivity. Notably, V2DP membranes realize an impressive current density of 5.5×103 A m-2, surpassing  previously nanofluidic membranes. In practical application scenario involving the mixing of artificial seawater and river water, the V2DP membranes exhibit a considerable ion transference number of 0.70 towards Cl-, contributing to an outstanding power density of ~55 W m-2. Theoretical calculations reveal that the large quantity of anion transport sites act as binding sites evenly located in the positively charged N-containing pyridine rings.

RÉSUMÉ

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical outcomes between nonsurgical and surgical treatment of distal radius fracture. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search by using multiple databases, including Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane. All databases were searched from the earliest records through February 2023. The study compared nonsurgical versus surgical treatment of distal radius fractures and included only randomized controlled trials (RCTS). RESULTS: There were seventeen randomized controlled trials retrieved. A total of 1730 patients were included: 862 in the nonsurgical group and 868 in the surgical group. The results showed a significant reduction in DASH score with surgical treatment (WMD 3.98, 95% CI (2.00, 5.95), P < 0.001). And in grip strength (%), the results showed a significant improvement in surgical treatment compared with non-surgical treatment (WMD - 6.60, 95% CI (-11.61, -1.60), P = 0.01). There was significant difference in radial inclination, radial length, volar title, range of wrist pronation, range of wrist supination. However, no difference in radial deviation, ulnar deviation, ulnar variance, range of wrist extension and range of wrist flexion was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that some patients with surgical treatment of distal radius fractures not only improved the grip strength (%), decreased the DASH score, but also improved the range of wrist pronation and the range of wrist supination compared with nonsurgical treatment. Based on the present meta-analysis, we suggest that some patients with surgical treatment might be more effective in patients with distal radius fracture.

RÉSUMÉ

Introduction: Bacteria frequently encounter nutrient limitation in nature. The ability of living in this nutrient shortage environment is vital for bacteria to preserve their population and important for some pathogenic bacteria to cause infectious diseases. Usually, we study how bacteria survive after nutrient depletion, a total starvation condition when bacteria almost cease growth and try to survive. However, nutrient limitation may not always lead to total starvation. Methods: Bacterial adaptation to nutrient shortage was studied by determining bacterial growth curves, intracellular pH, intracellular amino acid contents, gene transcription, protein expression, enzyme activity, and translation and replication activities. Results: No exogenous supply of methionine results in growth attenuation of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a human pathogen. In this paper, we refer to this inhibited growth state between ceased growth under total starvation and full-speed growth with full nutrients as semi-starvation. Similar to total starvation, methionine semi-starvation also leads to intracellular acidification. Surprisingly, it is intracellular acidification but not insufficient methionine synthesis that causes growth attenuation under methionine semi-starvation. With excessive glutamine supply in the medium, intracellular methionine level was not changed, while bacterial intracellular pH was elevated to ~ 7.6 (the optimal intracellular pH for pneumococcal growth) by glutamine deamination, and bacterial growth under semi-starvation was restored fully. Our data suggest that intracellular acidification decreases translation level and glutamine supply increases intracellular pH to restore translation level, thus restoring bacterial growth. Discussion: This growth with intracellular pH adjustment by glutamine is a novel strategy we found for bacterial adaptation to nutrient shortage, which may provide new drug targets to inhibit growth of pathogenic bacteria under semi-starvation.
