Heterostructures from complex oxides allow one to combine various electronic and magnetic orders as to induce new quantum states. A prominent example is the coupling between superconducting and magnetic orders in multilayers from high-Tc cuprates and manganites. A key role is played here by the interfacial CuO2 layer whose distinct properties remain to be fully understood. Here, we study with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering the magnon excitations of this interfacial CuO2 layer. In particular, we show that the underlying antiferromagnetic exchange interaction at the interface is strongly suppressed to J≈70 meV, when compared with J≈130 meV for the CuO2 layers away from the interface. Moreover, we observe an anomalous momentum dependence of the intensity of the interfacial magnon mode and show that it suggests that the antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by a particular kind of orbital order that yields a so-called altermagnetic state. Such a 2D altermagnet has recently been predicted to enable new spintronic applications and superconducting proximity effects.

SUMMARY: The updating of anatomical terms is essential to facilitate teaching and learning as well as international communication through publications and presentations at scientific events. In the posterior wall of the axilla, the teres major, teres minor and triceps brachii muscles form three spaces through which neurovascular structures of clinical significance run. The current study seeks to define and propose terms for these spaces which have been omitted by Terminologia Anatomica. The definition of the Latin term 'Spatium' was investigated using A Latin Dicionary, while the term 'Espacio' was analyzed using Diccionario panhispánico de términos médicos (Real Academia Nacional de Medicina de España, 2023), as well as the lexemes of the words 'scapula' and 'humerus', for which the Diccionario Médico-Biológico, Histórico y Etimológico de la Universidad de Salamanca was consulted. The presence of the term 'Spatium' in the Terminologia Anatomica was also investigated. Finally, 10 anatomy textbooks in Spanish were reviewed to identify the terms used for these spaces. In reviewing the latest edition of Terminologia Anatomica, it was found that the term 'Spatium' appears 25 times in different chapters and it was evident that no terms for scapulohumeral spaces appear in the chapters on upper limb structures. Moreover, in 100 % of the anatomy textbooks reviewed, at least one term is used to describe the scapulohumeral spaces. We believe that the proposed terms: 'Spatium humerotricipitale', 'Spatium scapulotricipitale' and 'Spatium teretricipitale' more accurately describe both the location and their association with the bone/muscle structures that form them. We therefore suggest that these terms be revised for inclusion in future editions of Terminologia Anatomica.


La actualización de términos anatómicos es esencial para facilitar la enseñanza-aprendizaje y comunicación internacional a través de publicaciones y presentaciones en eventos científicos. En la pared posterior de la axila, los músculos redondo mayor, redondo menor y tríceps braquial, forman tres espacios por donde discurren estructuras neurovasculares relevantes en la clínica. El estudio tuvo como objetivo definir y proponer términos para estos espacios omitidos por Terminologia Anatomica. En el diccionario A Latin Dictionary se investigó la definición en latín del término 'Spatium' y 'Espacio' en el Diccionario panhispánico de términos médicos (Real Academia Nacional de Medicina de España, 2023), además de los lexemas de las palabras 'escápula' y 'húmero' en el Diccionario Médico-Biológico, Histórico y Etimológico de la Universidad de Salamanca. También se investigó la presencia del término 'Spatium' en la Terminologia Anatomica. Por último, se revisaron 10 libros-textos de anatomía en español para identificar los términos utilizados para estos espacios y su relevancia clínica. Al revisar la última edición de Terminologia Anatomica, se observó que el término 'Spatium' aparece 25 veces en distintos capítulos y se evidenció que no aparecen términos para los espacios escapulohumerales en los capítulos de miembro superior. Además, en el 100 % de los libros-textos de anatomía revisados, se utiliza al menos un término para describir a los espacios escapulohumerales. Consideramos que los términos propuestos: 'Spatium humerotricipitale', 'Spatium scapulotricipitale' y 'Spatium teretricipitale' aluden con mayor precisión a la ubicación, ya que relaciona a las estructuras óseas y/ o musculares que lo forman. Por lo que sugerimos que estos términos sean revisados para incluirlos en futuras ediciones de Terminologia Anatomica.

Las terminologías son utilizadas como instrumento lingüístico que permite la transmisión de conocimiento de manera precisa y sin ambigüedades en el ámbito de las ciencias. Los lineamientos de la Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT) refieren que la denominación de nombres estructurales debe ser descriptivos e informativos. Este estudio analiza las raíces lingüísticas que componen el término Neuron parvum valde fluorescens vigente en Terminologia Histologica y el término Neuron parvum fluorescens vigente en Terminologia Neuroanatomica. Las células pequeñas intensamente fluorescentes son neuronas que se encuentran en el sistema nervioso autónomo, distribuidas en los ganglios simpáticos. Estas células presentan sinapsis aferentes con terminales nerviosas simpáticas preganglionares y sinapsis eferentes con las dendritas de las neuronas posganglionares. Su función es regular la transmisión ganglionar, actuando como interneuronas con señalización paracrina y endocrina. Además, se caracterizan por ser células fluorescentes, que expresan catecolaminas; serotonina, noradrenalina y dopamina. Se realizó una búsqueda en Terminologia Histologica y Terminologia Neuroanatomica, con una traducción de los términos al español. Además, la búsqueda se complementó en un diccionario etimológico en inglés para los términos correspondientes. Esta investigación encontró diferencia entre la traducción del latín al español del término fluorescens, quien posee un origen etimológico muy diferente a su significado en español. El término Neuron parvum valde fluorescens en Terminologia Histologica y el término Neuron parvum fluorescens en Terminologia Neuroanatomica, identifican a la misma estructura. Se sugiere reemplazar ambos términos por Cateconeuron ganglionare, entregando así una correcta descripción de este tipo de neurona, considerando su ubicación y función. Además, de esta manera ser un término concordante en latín para su incorporación en Terminologia Neuroanatomica y Terminologia Histologica.


SUMMARY: Terminologies are used as a linguistic tool to convey knowledge in a precise and unambiguous manner in science. The guidelines of the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT) state that the names given to structures should be both descriptive and informative. This study analyses the linguistic roots of the term Neuron parvum valde fluorescens in Terminologia Histologica and the term Neuron parvum fluorescens in Terminologia Neuroanatomica. Small intensely fluorescent cells are neurons found in the autonomic nervous system, distributed in the sympathetic ganglia, they have afferent synapses with preganglionic sympathetic nerve terminals and efferent synapses with the dendrites of postganglionic neurons, whose function is to regulate ganglionic transmission, acting as interneurons with paracrine and endocrine signalling. They are also characterized as fluorescent cells, producing the catecholamines: serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine. A search was carried out in Terminologia Histologica and Terminologia Neuroanatomica, with a translation of the terms into Spanish. This was complemented by a search in an English etymological dictionary for the corresponding terms. This research found a difference between the Latin to English translation of the term fluorescens, which has a very different etymological origin to its English meaning. The term Neuron parvum valde fluorescens in Terminologia Histologica and the term Neuron parvum fluorescens in Terminologia Neuroanatomica identify the same structure. The proposal is to replace both terms with Cateconeuron ganglionare, thus affording an accurate description of this type of neuron, considering its location and function. Moreover, it would also be a concordant term in Latin for its incorporation into the Terminologia Neuroanatomica and Terminologia Histologica.

Vascular calcification is a hallmark of atherosclerotic disease and serves as a strong predictor and risk factor for cardiovascular events. Growing evidence suggests that autophagy may play a protective role in early atherosclerosis. The precise effects of autophagy on VSMC-mediated calcification remain unknown. In this study, we utilized multi-omic profiling to investigate impaired autophagy at the transcriptional level as a key driver of VSMC calcification. Our findings revealed that impaired autophagy is an essential determinant of VSMC calcification. We observed that an osteogenic environment affects the open chromatin status of VSMCs, compromising the transcriptional activation of autophagy initiation genes. In vivo experiments involve pharmacological and genetic activation of autophagy using mouse models of spontaneous large (Mgp-/-) and small (Abcc6-/-) artery calcification. Taken together, these data advance our mechanistic understanding of vascular calcification and provide important insights for a broad range of cardiovascular diseases involving VSMC phenotype switch.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a measure of atherosclerosis and a well-established predictor of coronary artery disease (CAD) events. Here we describe a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of CAC in 22,400 participants from multiple ancestral groups. We confirmed associations with four known loci and identified two additional loci associated with CAC (ARSE and MMP16), with evidence of significant associations in replication analyses for both novel loci. Functional assays of ARSE and MMP16 in human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) demonstrate that ARSE is a promoter of VSMC calcification and VSMC phenotype switching from a contractile to a calcifying or osteogenic phenotype. Furthermore, we show that the association of variants near ARSE with reduced CAC is likely explained by reduced ARSE expression with the G allele of enhancer variant rs5982944. Our study highlights ARSE as an important contributor to atherosclerotic vascular calcification, and a potential drug target for vascular calcific disease.

Rashba materials have appeared as an ideal playground for spin-to-charge conversion in prototype spintronics devices. Among them, α-GeTe(111) is a non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric semiconductor for which a strong spin-orbit interaction gives rise to giant Rashba coupling. Its room temperature ferroelectricity was recently demonstrated as a route towards a new type of highly energy-efficient non-volatile memory device based on switchable polarization. Currently based on the application of an electric field, the writing and reading processes could be outperformed by the use of femtosecond light pulses requiring exploration of the possible control of ferroelectricity on this timescale. Here, we probe the room temperature transient dynamics of the electronic band structure of α-GeTe(111) using time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our experiments reveal an ultrafast modulation of the Rashba coupling mediated on the fs timescale by a surface photovoltage, namely an increase corresponding to a 13% enhancement of the lattice distortion. This opens the route for the control of the ferroelectric polarization in α-GeTe(111) and ferroelectric semiconducting materials in quantum heterostructures.

We address the long-standing problem of the ground state of 1T-TaS_{2} by computing the correlated electronic structure of stacked bilayers using the GW+EDMFT method. Depending on the surface termination, the semi-infinite uncorrelated system is either band insulating or exhibits a metallic surface state. For realistic values of the on-site and inter-site interactions, a Mott gap opens in the surface state, but it is smaller than the gap originating from the bilayer structure. Our results are consistent with recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements for different terminating layers, and with our own photoemission measurements, which indicate the coexistence of spatial regions with different gaps in the electronic spectrum. By comparison to exact diagonalization data, we clarify the interplay between Mott insulating and band insulating behavior in this archetypal layered system.

We present a case using a wire-cutting technique with the guidance of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) to retrieve an entrapped and uncoiled guide wire under the stent struts in a calcified circumflex artery.

The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway is a well-known regulator of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, but it also serves as a regulator of caldesmon, which negatively regulates vascular contractility. This study examined whether aortic contractile function requires ERK activation and if this activation is regulated by ageing. Biomechanical experiments revealed that contractile responses to the alpha1-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine are attenuated specifically in aged mice, which is associated with downregulation of ERK phosphorylation. ERK inhibition attenuates phenylephrine-induced contractility, indicating that the contractile tone is at least partially ERK-dependent. To explore the mechanisms of this age-related downregulation of ERK phosphorylation, we transfected microRNAs, miR-34a and miR-137 we have previously shown to increase with ageing and demonstrated that in A7r5 cells, both miRs downregulate the expression of Src and paxillin, known regulators of ERK signalling, as well as ERK phosphorylation. Further studies in aortic tissues transfected with miRs show that miR-34a but not miR-137 has a negative effect on mRNA levels of Src and paxillin. Furthermore, ERK phosphorylation is decreased in aortic tissue treated with the Src inhibitor PP2. Increases in miR-34a and miR-137 with ageing downregulate the expression of Src and paxillin, leading to impaired ERK signalling and aortic contractile dysfunction.

Electron-phonon coupling, i.e., the scattering of lattice vibrations by electrons and vice versa, is ubiquitous in solids and can lead to emergent ground states such as superconductivity and charge-density wave order. A broad spectral phonon line shape is often interpreted as a marker of strong electron-phonon coupling associated with Fermi surface nesting, i.e., parallel sections of the Fermi surface connected by the phonon momentum. Alternatively broad phonons are known to arise from strong atomic lattice anharmonicity. Here, we show that strong phonon broadening can occur in the absence of both Fermi surface nesting and lattice anharmonicity, if electron-phonon coupling is strongly enhanced for specific values of electron-momentum, k. We use inelastic neutron scattering, soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and ab-initio lattice dynamical and electronic band structure calculations to demonstrate this scenario in the highly anisotropic tetragonal electron-phonon superconductor YNi2B2C. This new scenario likely applies to a wide range of compounds.

OBJECTIVE: Arterial stiffness is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). MGP (matrix Gla protein) is implicated in vascular calcification in animal models, and circulating levels of the uncarboxylated, inactive form of MGP (ucMGP) are associated with cardiovascular disease-related and all-cause mortality in human studies. However, the role of MGP in arterial stiffness is uncertain. Approach and Results: We examined the association of ucMGP levels with vascular calcification, arterial stiffness including carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), and incident heart failure in community-dwelling adults from the Framingham Heart Study. To further investigate the link between MGP and arterial stiffness, we compared aortic PWV in age- and sex-matched young (4-month-old) and aged (10-month-old) wild-type and Mgp+/- mice. Among 7066 adults, we observed significant associations between higher levels of ucMGP and measures of arterial stiffness, including higher PWV and pulse pressure. Longitudinal analyses demonstrated an association between higher ucMGP levels and future increases in systolic blood pressure and incident HFpEF. Aortic PWV was increased in older, but not young, female Mgp+/- mice compared with wild-type mice, and this augmentation in PWV was associated with increased aortic elastin fiber fragmentation and collagen accumulation. CONCLUSIONS: This translational study demonstrates an association between ucMGP levels and arterial stiffness and future HFpEF in a large observational study, findings that are substantiated by experimental studies showing that mice with Mgp heterozygosity develop arterial stiffness. Taken together, these complementary study designs suggest a potential role of therapeutically targeting MGP in HFpEF.

RESUMEN: En terminología médica el término amígdala cerebral es utilizado para denominar a la estructura que según la Terminologia Neuroanatomica y Terminologia Anatomica se conoce como cuerpo amigadaloide, la cual está constituida por diversos núcleos y es responsable de las emociones, el comportamiento, regulación de la ansiedad, la agresión, el miedo, la memoria emocional, la cognición social y las respuestas al estrés. Siendo la amígdala cerebral una estructura tan importante el objetivo de este estudio fue: analizar el significado del término amígdala cerebral en la Terminologia Neuronatomica y en la Terminologia Anatomica y contrastar si el origen de sus raíces greco latinas concuerdan con la función de esta estructura acorde con los requerimientos de la FIPAT. Para ello se consultó los diccionarios de la Lengua Española, Diccionario DGE Griego Español, Diccionario VOX Griego Español, Diccionario Médico, Biológico, Histológico y Etimológico de la Universidad de Salamanca y Diccionario de Términos Médicos de la Real Academia Nacional de Medicina, así como algunos artículos y libros clásicos de anatomía. Los resultados indicaron que el término amígdala tiene el mismo significado en griego como en latín, en donde ἀμυγδαλέα, ἀμυγδαλέας (pr. amygdaléa, amygdaléas) es el árbol del almedro y ἀμυγδάλη, ἀμυγδάλης (pr. amygdále, amygdáles) significa almendra. Conociendo tanto la anatomía como la fisiología de esta estructura su forma no se asemeja a la de una almendra y su denominación actual no está acorde con los requerimientos de la FIPAT por lo cual consideramos que esta debe ser revisada.


SUMMARY: In medical terminology the term brain amygdala is used to refer to the structure that according to the Terminologia Neuroanatomica and Terminologia Anatomica is known as the amydaloid body, which is made up of various nuclei and is responsible for emotions, behavior, regulation of the anxiety, aggression, fear, emotional memory, social cognition, and responses to stress. Being the cerebral amygdala such an important structure, the objective of this study was: to analyze the meaning of the term cerebral amygdala in Terminologia Neuroanatomica and in Terminologia Anatomica and to contrast if the origin of its Greek Latin roots agrees with the function of this structure according to the requirements of the FIPAT. For this, the dictionaries of the Royal Spanish Academy, the DGE Greek Spanish Dictionary, the VOX Greek Spanish Dictionary, the Medical, Biological, Histological and Etymological Dictionary of the University of Salamanca, the Dictionary of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, as well as some articles and classic books of anatomy. The results indicated that the term amygdala has the same meaning in Greek as in Latin, where? ἀμυγδαλέα, ἀμυγδαλέας (pr. Amygdaléa, amygdaléas) is the almond tree andἀμυγδάλη, ἀμυγδάλης (pr. amygdále, amygdáles) means almond. Knowing both the anatomy and the physiology of this structure, its shape does not resemble that of an almond and its current name is not in accordance with the requirements of the FIPAT, for which we consider that it should be revised.

BACKGROUND: Risk stratification of COVID-19 patients upon hospital admission is key for their successful treatment and efficient utilization of hospital resources. We sought to evaluate the risk factors on admission (including comorbidities, vital signs, and initial laboratory assessment) associated with ventilation need and in-hospital mortality in COVID-19. METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort of COVID-19 patients from Mass General Brigham hospitals. Demographic, clinical, and admission laboratory data were obtained from electronic medical records of patients admitted to the hospital with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 before May 19, 2020. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to construct and validate the Ventilation in COVID Estimator (VICE) and Death in COVID Estimator (DICE) risk scores. FINDINGS: The entire cohort included 1042 patients (median age, 64 years; 56.8% male). The derivation and validation cohorts for the risk scores included 578 and 464 patients, respectively. We found four factors to be independently predictive for mechanical ventilation requirement (diabetes mellitus, SpO2:FiO2 ratio, C-reactive protein, and lactate dehydrogenase), and 10 factors to be predictors of in-hospital mortality (age, male sex, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic statin use, SpO2:FiO2 ratio, body mass index, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet count, and procalcitonin). Using these factors, we constructed the VICE and DICE risk scores, which performed with C-statistics of 0.84 and 0.91, respectively. Importantly, the chronic use of a statin was associated with protection against death due to COVID-19. The VICE and DICE score calculators have been placed on an interactive website freely available to healthcare providers and researchers (https://covid-calculator.com/). INTERPRETATION: The risk scores developed in this study may help clinicians more appropriately determine which COVID-19 patients will need to be managed with greater intensity. We found seven factors to be independently predictive for ventilation requirement (diabetes mellitus, dyspnea, alanine aminotransferase, troponin, C-reactive protein, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, and lactate dehydrogenase), and 10 factors to be predictors of in-hospital mortality (age, sex, diabetes mellitus, chronic statin use, albumin, C-reactive protein, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, mean corpuscular volume, platelet count, and procalcitonin). Using these factors, we constructed the VICE and DICE risk scores, which performed with C-statistics of at least 0.8 in our cohorts. Importantly, the chronic use of a statin was associated with protection against death due to COVID-19. The VICE and DICE score calculators have been placed on an interactive website freely available to the public (https://covid-calculator.com/). LIMITATIONS: One potential limitation is the modest sample sizes in both our derivation and validation cohorts. CONCLUSION: The risk scores developed in this study may help clinicians more appropriately determine which COVID-19 patients will need to be managed with greater intensity.

Los antiguos anatomistas renacentistas sentaron las bases del conocimiento actual en esta disciplina, sin embargo, no todos eran buenos lingüistas. Esto, vinculado a los errores en la traducción, ha dado lugar para la discusión sobre el correcto uso de algunos términos en anatomía, como es el caso de la controversial utilización de los términos lobo y lóbulo. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar los términos lobus y lobulus y proponer un concepto correcto para la denominación de las estructuras anatómicas según corresponda, siguiendo las recomendaciones de la Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT). Se realizó una búsqueda de los términos lobo y lóbulo con sus derivados en Terminologia Anatomica, cada uno de estos fue analizado desde un punto de vista etimológico y semántico según el Diccionario Médico-Biológico, Histórico y Etimológico de la Universidad de Salamanca. Los términos derivados de lobo y lóbulo se encuentran en variados sistemas del cuerpo humano, esto lo clasifica como un término de gran uso. En conclusión, el término lobo del latín lobus, proviene del griego que significa, estructura redondeada y saliente de un órgano. Posteriormente los romanos latinizaron esta palabra con el propósito de recaracterizar el término hacia el lenguaje médico. Por tanto, según el punto de la normativa FITAP, que indica al latín como idioma oficial, los términos correctos a utilizar son lobus y lobulus.


During the Renaissance anatomists laid the foundations for present day knowledge in this discipline. Not all anatomists however, were good linguists, which led to errors in translation and prompted discussions in reference to the correct use of certain anatomical terms. The controversial use of the terms lobe and lobule being one of these discrepancies. The objective of this study was to analyze the terms lobus and lobulus and propose a correct concept for the naming of anatomical structures following Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT) recommendations. A search was carried out for the terms lobe and lobule with their derivatives in Anatomical Terminology. Each term was analyzed from an etymological and semantic point of view according to the Medical-Biological, Historical and Etymological Dictionary, University of Salamanca. Terms derived from lobe and lobule can be found in a number of systems in the human body, characterizing this term as one of frequent use. In conclusion, the term lobe from the Latin lobus, originates from the Greek language, meaning the rounded structure and protrusion of an organ. Subsequently, Romans Latinized the term in order to reclassify it into medical language. Consequently, and in accordance to FITAP regulation, with Latin as the official language, the correct terms to use are lobus and lobulus.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects over 30% of adults in the United States. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is known to contribute to hepatic fibrosis, but the role of BMP signaling in the development of NAFLD is unclear. In this study, treatment with either of two BMP inhibitors reduced hepatic triglyceride content in diabetic (db/db) mice. BMP inhibitor-induced decrease in hepatic triglyceride levels was associated with decreased mRNA encoding Dgat2, an enzyme integral to triglyceride synthesis. Treatment of hepatoma cells with BMP2 induced DGAT2 expression and activity via intracellular SMAD signaling. In humans we identified a rare missense single nucleotide polymorphism in the BMP type 1 receptor ALK6 (rs34970181;R371Q) associated with a 2.1-fold increase in the prevalence of NAFLD. In vitro analyses revealed R371Q:ALK6 is a previously unknown constitutively active receptor. These data show that BMP signaling is an important determinant of NAFLD in a murine model and is associated with NAFLD in humans.

Long-read sequencing techniques, such as the Oxford Nanopore Technology, can generate reads that are tens of kilobases in length and are therefore particularly relevant for microbiome studies. However, owing to the higher per-base error rates than typical short-read sequencing, the application of long-read sequencing on microbiomes remains largely unexplored. Here we deeply sequenced two human microbiota mock community samples (HM-276D and HM-277D) from the Human Microbiome Project. We showed that assembly programs consistently achieved high accuracy (∼99%) and completeness (∼99%) for bacterial strains with adequate coverage. We also found that long-read sequencing provides accurate estimates of species-level abundance (R = 0.94 for 20 bacteria with abundance ranging from 0.005% to 64%). Our results not only demonstrate the feasibility of characterizing complete microbial genomes and populations from error-prone Nanopore sequencing data but also highlight necessary bioinformatics improvements for future metagenomics tool development.

El esmalte dental es una estructura considerada en Terminologia Anatomica, Histologica y Embryologica. Los términos incluidos relacionados a él presentan tres raíces asociadas: enamel, amelo y adamantino. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la etimología de estas raíces y presentar propuestas en latín y español que unifiquen las denominaciones relacionadas al esmalte dentario. En la búsqueda fueron utilizaron diccionarios médicos, terminológicos y etimológicos. Los resultados obtenidos señalan tres orígenes diferentes para cada raíz: adamantino es un término grecolatino relacionado a la extrema dureza de una estructura; enamel tiene un origen anglo-normando y antiguo alto germánico relacionado a la acción de fundir, derretir, y el aspecto estético que esto produce en un material; y amelo, el cual en sí mismo está relacionado a la botánica mientras que el término completo ameloblasto, fue acuñado por un académico estadounidense. Si bien la etimología de adamantino y enamel señalan características de firmeza y estética, respectivamente, en el desarrollo de la propuesta se decidió mantener el término latinizado enamelum y su adjetivo enameleus, eliminando las otras dos raíces relacionadas al esmalte dentario. Se realizó la propuesta para los cambios en los términos del idioma latín y su traducción al español, acorde a los requerimientos de la FIPAT para Terminologia Anatomica, Histologica y Embryologica, con el fin de unificar la denominación de los términos asociados y derivados del esmalte dental, para fines académicos y de investigación.


Dental enamel is a structure considered in Anatomical, Histological and Embryological Terminology. The included terms related to it have three associated roots: enamel, amelo and adamantino. The objective of this article is to analyze the etymology of these roots and present proposals in Latin and Spanish that unify the denominations related to tooth enamel. In the search, medical, terminological and etymological dictionaries were used. The results obtained indicate three different origins for each root: adamantine is a Greco-Roman term related to the extreme hardness of a structure; enamel has an Anglo-Norman and ancient high Germanic origin related to the action of melting, melting, and the aesthetic appearance that this produces in a material; and amelo, which in itself is related to botany while the full term ameloblast, was coined by an American academic. Although the etymology of adamantine and enamel indicate characteristics of firmness and aesthetics, respectively, in the development of the proposal it was decided to maintain the Latinized term enamelum and its adjective enameleus, eliminating the other two roots related to dental enamel. The proposal was made for changes in the terms of the Latin language and its translation into Spanish, according to the requirements of the FIPAT for Anatomical, Histological and Embryological Terminology, in order to unify the denomination of the associated terms and derivatives of dental enamel, for academic and research purposes.

Mortality rates of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) continue to rise across the world. Information regarding the predictors of mortality in patients with COVID-19 remains scarce. Herein, we performed a systematic review of published articles, from 1 January to 24 April 2020, to evaluate the risk factors associated with mortality in COVID-19. Two investigators independently searched the articles and collected the data, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We looked for associations between mortality and patient characteristics, comorbidities, and laboratory abnormalities. A total of 14 studies documenting the outcomes of 4659 patients were included. The presence of comorbidities such as hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1-3.1; P < .00001), coronary heart disease (OR, 3.8; 95% CI, 2.1-6.9; P < .00001), and diabetes (OR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.7-2.3; P < .00001) were associated with significantly higher risk of death amongst patients with COVID-19. Those who died, compared with those who survived, differed on multiple biomarkers on admission including elevated levels of cardiac troponin (+44.2 ng/L, 95% CI, 19.0-69.4; P = .0006); C-reactive protein (+66.3 µg/mL, 95% CI, 46.7-85.9; P < .00001); interleukin-6 (+4.6 ng/mL, 95% CI, 3.6-5.6; P < .00001); D-dimer (+4.6 µg/mL, 95% CI, 2.8-6.4; P < .00001); creatinine (+15.3 µmol/L, 95% CI, 6.2-24.3; P = .001); and alanine transaminase (+5.7 U/L, 95% CI, 2.6-8.8; P = .0003); as well as decreased levels of albumin (-3.7 g/L, 95% CI, -5.3 to -2.1; P < .00001). Individuals with underlying cardiometabolic disease and that present with evidence for acute inflammation and end-organ damage are at higher risk of mortality due to COVID-19 infection and should be managed with greater intensity.
