BACKGROUND: Temperature is an important environment factor that is critical to the survival and growth of crustaceans. However, the mechanisms by which crustaceans detect changes in temperature are still unclear. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are non-selective cation channels well known for properties in temperature sensation. However, comprehensive understandings on TRP channels as well as their temperature sensing functions are still lacking in crustaceans. RESULTS: In this study, a total of 26 TRP genes were identified in the swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, which can be classified into TRPA, TRPC, TRPP, TRPM, TRPML, TRPN and TRPV. Tissue expression analysis revealed a wide distribution of these TRP genes in P. trituberculatus, and antennules, neural tissues, and ovaries were the most commonly expressed tissues. To investigate the responsiveness of TRP genes to the temperature change, 18 TRPs were selected to detect their expression after high and low temperature stress. The results showed that 12 TRPs showed induced gene expression in both high and low temperature groups, while 3 were down-regulated in the low temperature group, and 3 showed no change in expression in either group. CONCLUSIONS: This study characterized the TRP family genes in P. trituberculatus, and explored their involvement in response to temperature stress. Our results will enhance overall understanding of crustacean TRP channels and their possible functions.

Attentional consequences of (i) mere onset of a peripheral visual cue, and (ii)encoding spatially predictive, landmark features of that cue were studied in two experiments. Target location was associated with landmark features of peripheral cues. Cue onset elicited both attention capture (Experiment Two) and inhibition of return (Experiment One) effects. In both experiments, attentional effects of landmark features of the cues were observed early in practice, and diminished with time on task. Contrary to hypotheses based on models that liken attention to a moving spotlight or zoom lens, in both experiments attentional effects of landmark features were confined to the location where the cue was presented. To explain this, we enlist the concept of attentional priority maps, and propose that visual encoding causes attentional priorities to be updated via alternative input routes and mechanisms. We suggest that onset cueing effects are associated with retinotectal 'spatial indexing', which registers the location, but not the attributes of new stimuli, while landmark cueing effects are associated with interaction between spatial indexing and dorsal stream visual processing of attentionally relevant landmark features.

Tungsten and tungsten alloys are being considered as leading candidates for structural and functional materials in future fusion energy devices. The most attractive properties of tungsten for the design of magnetic and inertial fusion energy reactors are its high melting point, high thermal conductivity, low sputtering yield and low long-term disposal radioactive footprint. Yet, despite these relevant features, tungsten also presents a very low fracture toughness, mostly associated with inter-granular failure and bulk plasticity, that limits its applications. Significant neutron-induced transmutation happens in these tungsten components during nuclear fusion reactions, creating transmutant elements including Re, Os and Ta. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations that allow the calculation of defect and solute energetics are critical to better understand the behavior and evolution of tungsten-based materials in a fusion energy environment. In this study, we present a novel computational approach to perform DFT calculations on transmuting materials. In particular, we predict elastic and plastic mechanical properties (such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, ductility parameter, etc) on a variety of W-X compositions that result when pure tungsten is exposed to the EU-DEMO fusion first wall conditions for ten years.

Dorsal stream visual encoding was studied in three experiments, by examining effects of peripheral landmark cues on eye movements. Stimulus features and task structure were tailored to physiological and functional characterisations of the dorsal visual stream. Sub-discriminable peripheral stimuli served as landmark cue stimuli. In Experiments 1 and 2, orienting behaviour in response to cues and targets differed for participants with relatively low and relatively high peripheral contrast thresholds. In Experiment 1, low, but not high-threshold participants oriented towards landmark cues that could not be discriminated consciously. However, in Experiment 3, high-, but not low-threshold participants oriented towards near threshold cues. Hence, under appropriate conditions both groups of participants oriented in response to brief, low-contrast, peripheral information. We propose that landmark cueing may provide a useful tool for measuring individual differences in dorsal stream processing and dynamic aspects of visual functioning and awareness.

RÉSUMÉ

The work describes an improved 2-D model for a thin annulus by using a modified assumption with regard to coupled vibration. With this approach, the impedance spectrum and displacements due to radial modes, both in radial and thickness direction of a thin ring, are obtained. Bending displacement is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) and matches our model. The bending in the thickness direction is coupled to radial modes and shows several node circles in the high radial overtone frequency range. The model is validated by FEA with excellent agreement between the new theory and FEA results.
