The piezoelectric effect refers to a physical phenomenon where piezoelectric materials generate an electric field when subjected to mechanical stress or undergo mechanical deformation when subjected to an external electric field. This principle underlies the operation of piezoelectric sensors. Piezoelectric sensors have garnered significant attention due to their excellent self-powering capability, rapid response speed, and high sensitivity. With the rapid development of sensor techniques achieving high precision, increased mechanical flexibility, and miniaturization, a range of flexible electronic products have emerged. As the core constituents of piezoelectric sensors, flexible piezoelectric composite materials are commonly used due to their unique advantages, including high conformability, sensitivity, and compatibility. They have found applications in diverse domains such as underwater detection, electronic skin sensing, wearable sensors, targeted therapy, and ultrasound diagnostics for deep tissue. The advent of flexible piezoelectric composite materials has revolutionized the design concepts and application scenarios of traditional piezoelectric materials, playing a crucial role in the development of next-generation flexible electronic products. This paper reviews the research progress on flexible piezoelectric composite materials, covering their types and typical fabrication techniques, as well as their applications across various fields. Finally, a summary and outlook on the existing issues and future development of these composite materials are provided.

MicroRNAs have been demonstrated to play critical role in the development of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and hypoxia is a common hallmark of NSCLC. MiRNA-130a-3p (miR-130a) is a well-known tumor suppressor, and we intended to explore the role and mechanism of miR-130a in NSCLC cells under hypoxia. We used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction method to measure miR-130a expression, and found that miR-130a was downregulated in human NSCLC tumors and cell lines (A549 and H1299), accompanied with upregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1A), a marker of hypoxia. Besides, miR-130a low expression was associated with tumor burden and poor overall survival. Moreover, miR-130a expression was even downregulated in hypoxia-treated A549 and H1299 cells. Ectopic expression of miR-130a suppressed Warburg effect, migration and invasion in hypoxic A549 and H1299 cells, as evidenced by decreased glucose consumption, lactate production, hexokinase 2 expression, and numbers of migration cells and invasion cells analyzed by commercial glucose and lactate assay kits, western blotting and transwell assays. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-130a restrained xenograft tumor growth of A549 cells in mice. However, recovery of HIF1A could reverse the suppressive effect of miR-130a overexpression on cell migration, invasion and Warburg effect in hypoxic A549 and H1299 cells. Mechanically, dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA pull-down assay confirmed a target relationship between miR-130a and HIF1A. Collectively, we demonstrated an anti-tumor role of miR-130a in NSCLC cells under hypoxia through targeting HIF1A, suggesting a potential target for the interfering of NSCLC.

Increased glycolysis under hypoxic stress is a fundamentally important feature of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, but molecular mechanisms of hypoxia on glycolysis remain elusive. Herein, we aimed to explore whether lncRNAs and miRNAs are involved in the glycolytic reprogramming under hypoxic conditions. The levels of HOXA transcript at the distal tip (HOTTIP), miR-615-3p and high mobility group box 3 (HMGB3) mRNA were assessed by qRT-PCR. Western blot was performed to determine the protein expression of hexokinase 2 (HK-2) and HMGB3. Glucose consumption and lactate production were analyzed using a respective assay kit. The targeted correlation between miR-615-3p and HOTTIP or HMGB3 was verified using dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipition assays. Our data revealed that HOTTIP was upregulated and miR-615-3p was downregulated in NSCLC tissues and cells. Hypoxia induced glycolysis, increased HOTTIP and HMGB3 mRNA levels and repressed miR-615-3p expression in NSCLC cells. HOTTIP deficiency or miR-615-3p expression restoration repressed hypoxia-induced glycolysis. Moreover, HOTTIP acted as a molecular sponge for miR-615-3p and HMGB3 was a direct target of miR-615-3p. The inhibitory effect of HOTTIP deficiency on glycolysis under hypoxic exposure was reversed by miR-615-3p restoration. Additionally, HOTTIP regulated HMGB3 expression by acting as a molecular sponge of miR-615-3p in NSCLC cells. In conclusion, our study suggested that HOTTIP might promote glycolysis under hypoxic conditions at least partly through regulating miR-615-3p/HMGB3 axis in NSCLC cells. Targeting HOTTIP might be a promising therapeutic strategy for NSCLC treatment.

This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression and the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with advanced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) wild-type non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The predictive role and cut-off value of PD-L1 expression was subsequently investigated. A total of 172 patients with advanced EGFR wild-type NSCLC were enrolled. All patients received platinum-based doublet chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus cisplatin). PD-L1 expression in lung tissues was assessed using immunohistochemical methods. The χ2 test was used to analyze the association between PD-L1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics. Survival time analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The two groups, positive PD-L1 expression and negative PD-L1 expression, were compared using the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model was conducted to determine prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) times. Positive PD-L1 expression was observed in 48.3% (84/172), 40.7% (70/172), 21.5% (37/172) and 8.1% (14/172) of patients when using cut-off values of 1, 5, 10 and 50%, respectively. The χ2 test revealed that elevated pretreatment C-reactive protein (CRP) level and cancer stage IV were significantly associated with positive PD-L1 expression. The OS and PFS of positive PD-L1 (1, 5, 10 and 50% cut-off) expression group were shorter compared with the negative PD-L1 (1, 5, 10 and 50% cut-off) expression group. Multivariate survival analysis revealed that PD-L1 expression ≥50% was significantly associated with decreased OS and PFS [OS time, P=0.001; hazard ratio (HR), 2.768; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.551-4.940; PFS time, P=0.002; HR, 2.537; 95% CI, 1.423-4.524]. These results indicated that positive PD-L1 (50% cut-off) expression was an independent predictor of poor prognosis for patients with advanced NSCLC treated with gemcitabine plus cisplatin. PD-L1 expression was associated with CRP level and cancer stage. The results obtained in the present study suggest that positive PD-L1 expression serves a prognostic role in advanced NSCLC and that the optimal cut-off value may be 50%.

PURPOSE: NK/T-cell neoplasms are rare, highly aggressive, and insensitive to chemotherapy. These lymphomas have a poor prognosis, with patients being vulnerable to relapse. Hence, there is a need for alternative treatments. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether anti-PD1 takes effect on NK/T cell lymphoma. METHODS: The expression of PD-L1 in NK/T cell lines was investigated by flow cytometry and by Western blot. In vivo, overall survival and median survival time of mice bearing an NK/T cell line tumor was assessed. Tumor-infiltrating T cells and monocyte-derived suppressor cells were evaluated by flow cytometry. Levels of PD-L1 and components of the JAK-STAT pathway were assessed in tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: NK/T cell lines had greater expression of PD-L1 than normal peripheral blood human NK cells. In vivo, anti-PD1 treatment improved overall survival and median survival time of mice bearing an NK/T cell line. Furthermore, anti-PD1 treatment increased levels of PD-L1. Cultured tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes from mice treated with anti-PD1 had greater levels of IFN-γ than cultured lymphocytes from untreated animals. Further, levels of JAK2 and STAT1 were greater in mice treated with anti-PD1. CONCLUSION: In vivo, anti-PD1 inhibited the progression of an NK/T-cell lymphoma and up-regulated PD-L1 expression. This up-regulation may be through the IFN-γ-associated JAK-STAT pathway.

Nasal-type natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that is clinically aggressive and has a poor prognosis. Platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFRs) and their ligands (PDGFs) play important roles in angiogenesis, cancer cell proliferation, survival, migration and poor prognosis in various tumours. However, the significance of PDGFRs in NKTCL remains unknown. Herein, the present study aimed to investigate the important role of PDGFRα in pathogenesis, progression and prognisis of NKTCL. Firstly, we performed immunohistochemical staining, qRT-PCR and western blotting to determine PDGFRα expression in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 78 NKTCL cases and in cell lines. Secondly, correlations between PDGFRα expression and NKTCL clinical parameters and prognosis were analysed. Moreover, a biological assessment of PDGFRα blockade in two NKTCL cell lines was conducted through proliferation assay, cell-cycle evaluation and apoptosis detection by flow cytometry analyses. Furthermore, we detected in vivo activity of imatinib in mouse model of NKTCL. We found that the expression of PDGFRα was significantly higher in NKTCL tissues compared to the reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of the nasopharynx (P = 0.028). High PDGFRα expression was strongly associated with a high LDH level (P = 0.028) and III-IV stage (P = 0.013). NKTCL patients with high PDGFRα expression displayed a reduced median overall survival time and progression-free survival time when compared with those with low PDGFRα expression (P = 0.011, P = 0.005, respectively). Cox multivariate analysis showed that III-IV stage (P = 0.024) and high PDGFRα expression (P = 0.003) were independent prognostic factors in NKTCL patients. Biological assessment assays in two NKTCL cell lines revealed that a specific PDGFR antagonist, imatinib, inhibited cell viability, blocked cell cycle progression at G0/G1 stage and induced apoptosis. Similarly, the in vivo assay showed that imatinib delayed mouse model tumour growth. In conclusion, NKTCL tumour cells have prominent PDGFRα expression, which can serve as a candidate prognostic marker. PDGFR antagonists have significant biological effect on NKTCL and may be useful therapeutic agents for treatment of NKTCL.

Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is an aggressive disease with poor prognosis. The lung is a relatively rare site of involvement. The current study presents a case of primary pulmonary ENKTL with fever and dyspnea, mimicking pneumonia and initially treated with empirical antibiotics. The patient demonstrated rapid deterioration and died shortly following diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, large-scale investigations referring to primary pulmonary ENKTL are not available. As a result, the exact incidence and clinical features of primary pulmonary ENKTL are unknown. In the current report, a literature review is presented to discuss the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis factors of this malignant disease.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to identify the potential relevant biomarkers to predict the therapeutic response of advanced extranodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma(ENKTL) treated with asparaginase-based treatment. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Proteomic technology is used to identify differentially expressed proteins between chemotherapy-resistant and chemotherapy-sensitive patients. Then enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is used to validate the predictive value of selective biomarkers. RESULTS: A total of 61 upregulated and 22 downregulated proteins are identified in chemotherapy-resistant patients compared with chemotherapy-sensitive patients. Furthermore, they validated that pretreatment high level 14-3-3 epsilon(ε)(≥61.95 ng/mL, 84.0 and 95.2% for sensitivity and specificity, respectively) is associated with poor 2-year overall survival (OS) (5.3 vs 68.8%, p<0.0001) and PFS (4.5 vs 76.9%, p<0.0001). In multivariate survival analysis, pretreatment high level 14-3-3 epsilon significantly is correlated with both inferior OS (p = 0.033) and PFS (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These findings indicate that pretreatment high level 14-3-3 epsilon is an independent predictor of chemotherapy-resistance and poor prognosis for patients with advanced ENKTL in the era of asparaginase.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is an indolent cutaneous T-cell lymphoma with a favourable prognosis. The reported incidence of central nervous system (CNS) involvement in SPTCL is extremely low. SPTCL with CNS involvement is a fatal disease with no optimal treatment. The present study presents the case of a 27-year-old man who initially presented with erythematous nodules on the left buttock and left inguinal lymph node enlargement. A skin biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of SPTCL. Subsequent to diagnosis, the patient developed CNS involvement and underwent treatment of fotemustine, teniposide and dexamethasone, and complete remission was achieved for 78 months. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of secondary CNS SPTCL with long-term remission. Accumulating evidence shows that this CNS-directed regimen can be effective in SPTCL with CNS involvement and in other CNS lymphomas.
