There have been reports of potential health risks for people from hydrophobic organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCHs), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). When a contaminated site is used for residential housing or public utility and recreation areas, the soil-bound organic pollutants might pose a threat to human health. In this study, we investigated the contamination profiles and potential risks to human health of 15 PAHs, 6 PCHs, and 12 OPFRs in soils from four contaminated sites in China. We used an in vitro method to determine the oral bioaccessibility of soil pollutants. Total PAHs were found at concentrations ranging from 26.4 ng/g to 987 ng/g. PCHs (0.27‒14.3 ng/g) and OPFRs (6.30‒310 ng/g) were detected, but at low levels compared to earlier reports. The levels of PAHs, PCHs, and OPFRs released from contaminated soils into simulated gastrointestinal fluids ranged from 1.74% to 91.0%, 2.51% to 39.6%, and 1.37% to 96.9%, respectively. Based on both spiked and unspiked samples, we found that the oral bioaccessibility of pollutants was correlated with their logKow and molecular weight, and the total organic carbon content and pH of soils. PAHs in 13 out of 38 contaminated soil samples posed potential high risks to children. When considering oral bioaccessibility, nine soils still posed potential risks, while the risks in the remaining soils became negligible. The contribution of this paper is that it corrects the health risk of soil-bound organic pollutants by detecting bioaccessibility in actual soils from different contaminated sites.

Background: In some patients, persistent gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea occur as part of long COVID-19 syndrome following acute respiratory symptoms caused by SARS-CoV-2. However, the characteristics of immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract of COVID-19 patients and their association with these symptoms remain unclear. Methodology: Data were collected from 95 COVID-19 patients. Among this cohort, 11 patients who exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms and underwent gastroscopy were selected. Using imaging mass cytometry, the gastrointestinal tissues of these patients were thoroughly analyzed to identify immune cell subgroups and investigate their spatial distribution. Results: Significant acute inflammatory responses were found in the gastrointestinal tissues, particularly in the duodenum, of COVID-19 patients. These alterations included an increase in the levels of CD68+ macrophages and CD3+CD4+ T-cells, which was more pronounced in tissues with nucleocapsid protein (NP). The amount of CD68+ macrophages positively correlates with the number of CD3+CD4+ T-cells (R = 0.783, p < 0.001), additionally, spatial neighborhood analysis uncovered decreased interactions between CD68+ macrophages and multiple immune cells were noted in NP-positive tissues. Furthermore, weighted gene coexpression network analysis was employed to extract gene signatures related to clinical features and immune responses from the RNA-seq data derived from gastrointestinal tissues from COVID-19 patients, and we validated that the MEgreen module shown positive correlation with clinical parameter (i.e., Total bilirubin, ALT, AST) and macrophages (R = 0.84, p = 0.001), but negatively correlated with CD4+ T cells (R = -0.62, p = 0.004). By contrast, the MEblue module was inversely associated with macrophages and positively related with CD4+ T cells. Gene function enrichment analyses revealed that the MEgreen module is closely associated with biological processes such as immune response activation, signal transduction, and chemotaxis regulation, indicating its role in the gastrointestinal inflammatory response. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the role of specific immune cell groups in the gastrointestinal inflammatory response in COVID-19 patients. Gene coexpression network analysis further emphasized the importance of the gene modules in gastrointestinal immune responses, providing potential molecular targets for the treatment of COVID-19-related gastrointestinal symptoms.

In order to avoid the disadvantages of the Fenton process in wastewater treatment and reduce the cost of wastewater treatment, a series of MIL-101(Fe)-X (X = -OH, -NH2, -NO2, -H) solid Fenton catalysts were successfully prepared. The performance of these Fenton-like catalysts was studied with the Fenton experiment as a reference and methylene blue (MB) as an organic pollutant. The effects of the H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, and reaction pH on catalytic performance were systematically studied. The research had shown that the optimal concentration of H2O2 for catalytic reactions was 0.10 mmol/L and the pH was 3. At this point, their catalytic degradation MB performance was superior to the Fenton reaction and photocatalytic reaction. When the H2O2 participated in the reaction, the performance of MIL-101(Fe)-X (X = -OH, -NH2, -NO2, -H) in catalyzing the degradation of MB followed the rule of -OH > -NH2 > -NO2 > -H. This was due to the synergistic effect of Fenton-like catalysis and photocatalytic degradation in the catalytic degradation of MB. In addition, the electron paramagnetic resonance and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry showed that the hydroxyl radical (·OH) generated during the catalytic process first underwent a redox reaction with the highly electronegative functional groups in the MB molecule, and finally oxidized it to CO2 and H2O. This study successfully prepared commercially applicable Fenton-like catalysts and explored their optimal reaction conditions. This provides a technical reference for wastewater treatment.

Autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) can cause severe or very severe pre-speech hearing loss. Transmembrane channel-like 1 (TMC1) gene is the sixth deafness gene discovered, but the precise extent of its protein structure and function is unknown. First, history collection, audiology examination and imaging examination were performed on the proband and his family members. Peripheral blood of proband and family members was collected, genomic DNA was extracted, exon high-throughput sequencing technology was used to detect the deafness gene mutation of the proband, and Sanger sequencing was performed to verify the TMC1 gene of the proband's parents. The proband was born with hearing impairment, normal tympanic function, inability to induce acoustic reflex in both ears (acoustic reflex threshold is 100 dBHL), and severe sensorineural deafness. One of his sisters has severe sensorineural hearing loss, and neither his parents nor his other sister is hearing impaired. High-throughput sequencing of the proband identified mutations at c.741+3_741+6delAAGT (splicing) and c.884C>T (p.A295V) of the TMC1 gene, two of which were heterozygous mutations. Sanger sequencing confirmed that the c.884C > T mutation was inherited from the mother, while the c.741+3_741+6delAAGT mutation was derived from the father. Prediction of amino acid function suggested that both mutations were pathogenic mutations. In conclusion, we found a new pathogenic complex heterozygous mutation of the TMC1 gene, which enriched the mutation spectrum of the TMC1 gene and provided a basis for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis of ARNSHL.

Antiferroelectric (AFE) materials, characterized by double electric hysteresis loops, can be transformed to the ferroelectric (FE) phase under an external electric field, making them promising candidates for electronic energy storage and solid-state refrigeration. Additionally, the field-induced strain in AFE materials is contingent upon the direction of the electric field, rendering it with a switching characteristic. Although AFE materials have made progress in the field of energy storage and negative electrocaloric effect, the coexistence of AFE and ferroelasticity is still rarely reported. Here, two isomorphic organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, HDAEPbCl4 and HDAEPbBr4 (HDAE is [2-(hydroxydimethylammonio)ethan-1-aminium]), exhibiting FE-AFE-PE (PE is paraelectric) phase transitions, are presented. Remarkably, the temperature range where AFE and ferroelasticity coexist is significantly broadened from 59.9 K to 115.1 K by strengthening short-range forces via halogen substitution. This discovery extends the family of FE, AFE, and ferroelastic materials, contributing to the development of multifunctional materials and advancing multifunctional material development.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can be reactivated and proliferated with fatal outcome in immuno-compromised people, but the clinical consequences of EBV infection in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) remain uncertain. In this study, we investigated the infection rate, the influence and the early predictors of EBV infection in SFTS patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, SFTS patients who were treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from May 2011 to August 2021 were enrolled and divided into infected and non-infected groups. We compared the demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations and signs, laboratory tests and prognosis, and explored the risk factors of EBV infection by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 120 hospitalized SFTS patients with EBV-DNA testing were enrolled in this study. Patients with EBV infection had statistically significant higher mortality rate (32.0% vs. 11.43%, P = 0.005). Compared with the non-infected group, the EBV-infected group had higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine-kinase (CK), fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), D-dimer, and CD56+ cell counts, lower levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, complement 3 (C3), and C4. The proportion of patients with age ≥ 60 years and ferritin > 1500.0 ng/ml in the EBV-infected group was significantly higher than that in the non-infected group. The results of ROC analysis showed that the cut-off values of CRP, IgG, C3, C4, and CD56+ cell counts to predict EBV infection were 13.2 mg/l, 12.5 g/l, 1.1 g/l, 0.6 g/l, 0.3 g/l, and 94.0 cells/µl. Multivariable logistic analysis showed that age ≥ 60 years old, CRP > 13.2 mg/l, BUN > 5.4 mmol/l, ferritin > 1500.0 ng/ml, IgG < 12.5 g/l, IgM < 1.1 g/l, C4 < 0.3 g/l, and CD56+ cell counts > 94.0 cells/µl were the independent risk factors of EBV infection in SFTS patients. CONCLUSIONS: SFTS combined with EBV infection is associated with high morbidity and mortality. It is necessary to strengthen screening for EBV infection and its early predictive markers after admission in SFTS patients.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is essential for diagnosing colorectal diseases but can cause pain during the procedure. This study explores the analgesic effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation based on Wrist-Ankle Acupuncture theory (TENS-WAA) in non-anesthetic colonoscopy. METHODS: This prospective study included 120 participants undergoing non-anesthetic colonoscopies. The trial group receiving low-frequency, high-intensity TENS-WAA adjusted to the maximum tolerable current, while the control group received minimal current. Primary outcome was the retrospective pain VAS score. Secondary outcomes included time, heart rate, and credibility/expectancy questionnaire (CEQ) scores (ChiCTR2300076524). RESULTS: Participants who received TENS-WAA intervention reported significantly lower pain VAS scores than the control group (estimated median difference -1.1, 95% CI: -2 to -0.4, P=0.002). Male participants in the trial group experienced significantly lower pain scores than the control group (mean difference -1.4, 95% CI: -2.41 to -0.39, P=0.008). Additionally, the trial group also had significantly lower heart rates (P<0.001) and higher CEQ scores (P=0.001) than the control group. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION: TENS-WAA effectively reduces pain during non-anesthetized colonoscopy, especially in male participants, providing a promising non-invasive analgesic method.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the efficacy of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but have yielded inconsistent results. We updated the short-term and long-term efficacy of FMT in treating IBS, and performed a first-of-its-kind exploration of the relationship between gut microbiota and emotions. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library using various search strategies to identify all eligible studies. The inclusion criteria for data extraction were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the efficacy of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) compared to placebo in adult patients (≥ 18 years old) with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A meta-analysis was then performed to assess the summary relative risk (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Out of 3,065 potentially relevant records, a total of 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 573 subjects met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The meta-analyses revealed no significant differences in short-term (12 weeks) (RR 0.20, 95% CI -0.04 to 0.44), long-term (52 weeks) global improvement (RR 1.38, 95% CI 0.87 to 2.21), besides short-term (12 weeks) (SMD - 48.16, 95% CI -102.13 to 5.81, I2 = 90%) and long-term (24 weeks) (SMD 2.16, 95% CI -60.52 to 64.83, I2 = 68%) IBS-SSS. There was statistically significant difference in short-term improvement of IBS-QoL (SMD 10.11, 95% CI 0.71 to 19.51, I2 = 82%), although there was a high risk of bias. In terms of long-term improvement (24 weeks and 54 weeks), there were no significant differences between the FMT and placebo groups (SMD 7.56, 95% CI 1.60 to 13.52, I2 = 0%; SMD 6.62, 95% CI -0.85 to 14.08, I2 = 0%). Sensitivity analysis indicated that there were visible significant effects observed when the criteria were based on Rome IV criteria (RR 16.48, 95% CI 7.22 to 37.62) and Gastroscopy (RR 3.25, 95%CI 2.37 to 4.47), Colonoscopy (RR 1.42, 95% CI 0.98 to 2.05). when using mixed stool FMT based on data from two RCTs, no significant difference was observed (RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.66 to -1.34). The remission of depression exhibited no significant difference between the FMT and placebo groups at the 12-week mark (SMD - 0.26, 95% CI -3.09 to 2.58), and at 24 weeks (SMD - 2.26, 95% CI -12.96 to 8.45). Furthermore, major adverse events associated with FMT were transient and self-limiting. DISCUSSION: Based on the available randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the current evidence does not support the efficacy of FMT in improving global IBS symptoms in the long term. The differential results observed in subgroup analyses raise questions about the accurate identification of suitable populations for FMT. Further investigation is needed to better understand the reasons behind these inconsistent findings and to determine the true potential of FMT as a treatment for IBS.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of RASSF1A (Ras association domain family 1 isoform) methylation using bronchial aspirates as an auxiliary method for diagnosing lung cancer through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Studies published prior to October 30, 2022, were retrieved from the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Wan Fang databases using the keywords "lung cancer", "RASSF1A", "methylation", and "bronchial aspirates". A fixed or random effect model was used to calculate the combined sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratios (LR), negative LR, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), along with the respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and the area under the curve (AUC) with Q index. The threshold effect was defined by using the Spearman correlation coefficient, and the Deeks funnel plot was generated to evaluate publication bias. RESULTS: Among the 12 trials that met the inclusion criteria, a total of 2388 participants were involved. The pooled results for the diagnosis of lung cancer were as follows, when compared to the pathological diagnosis: sensitivity of 0.47 (95% CI: 0.45-0.50), specificity of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.95-0.97), positive LR of 12.18 (95% CI: 8.96-16.55), negative LR of 0.56 (95% CI: 0.52-0.61), DOR of 24.05 (95% CI: 17.29-33.47), and AUC of 0.78 (Q index = 0.72), respectively. The sensitivity of the RASSF1A methylation assay was relatively low in a detailed subgroup analysis, fluctuating between 0.39 and 0.90, indicating a limitation in its diagnostic value for lung cancer. The RASSF1A methylation assay, on the other hand, demonstrated excellent specificity, suggesting a high exclusion value. Of note, the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, DOR, and AUC for small cell lung cancer were 0.90 (0.84-0.94), 0.95 (0.94-0.97), 249.5 (103.94-598.8), and 0.98, respectively, showing that RASSF1A methylation was a promising biomarker for diagnosing small cell lung cancer with both high diagnostic and exclusion value. Furthermore, RASSF1A methylation using bronchial washings and bronchial aspirates showed a high AUC of 0.998 and 0.93, respectively, indicating excellent diagnostic performance. CONCLUSIONS: The methylation of RASSF1A in bronchial aspirates demonstrated a high level of diagnostic accuracy and has the potential to be a valuable supplementary diagnostic method, especially for identifying small cell lung cancer.

Hydrogels, as an emerging biomaterial, have found extensive use in the healing of wounds due to their distinctive physicochemical structure and functional properties. Moreover, hydrogels can be made to match a range of therapeutic requirements for materials used in wound healing through specific functional modifications. This review provides a step-by-step explanation of the processes involved in cutaneous wound healing, including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and reconstitution, along with an investigation of the factors that impact these processes. Furthermore, a thorough analysis is conducted on the various stages of the wound healing process at which functional hydrogels are implemented, including hemostasis, anti-infection measures, encouraging regeneration, scar reduction, and wound monitoring. Next, the latest progress of multifunctional hydrogels for wound healing and the methods to achieve these functions are discussed in depth and categorized for elucidation. Finally, perspectives and challenges associated with the clinical applications of multifunctional hydrogels are discussed.

The aging population has led to a widening gap between the supply and demand for defecation care. To address this issue, the development of defecation care devices is the most direct and effective solution. Pre-defecation care devices offer a more personalized and comfortable alternative to the conventional post-defecation care devices currently available on the market. Furthermore, they facilitate greater patient involvement in the care process. Real-time monitoring and accurate identification of defecation intention are key technologies in the development of pre-defecation nursing devices. Automatic and accurate online monitoring of defecation intention can provide accurate early warning information for differentiated defecation assistance and cleansing care, effectively reducing nursing workload and improving patients' quality of life. However, there are relatively few studies on real-time monitoring and accurate identification of defecation intention. This review summarizes the existing defecation intention sensing technologies and their monitoring principles and research status, and explores the potential development direction of defecation intention sensing systems by comparing the characteristics and application conditions of various sensing technologies, which provides a direction for perception strategies for future defecation intention monitoring and early warning research.

Micro/nanomotors represent a promising class of drug delivery carriers capable of converting surrounding chemical or external energy into mechanical power, enabling autonomous movement. Their distinct autonomous propulsive force distinguishes them from other carriers, offering significant potential for enhancing drug penetration across cellular and tissue barriers. A comprehensive understanding of micro/nanomotor dynamics with various power sources is crucial to facilitate their transition from proof-of-concept to clinical application. In this review, micro/nanomotors are categorized into three classes based on their energy sources: endogenously stimulated, exogenously stimulated, and live cell-driven. The review summarizes the mechanisms governing micro/nanomotor movements under these energy sources and explores factors influencing autonomous motion. Furthermore, it discusses methods for controlling micro/nanomotor movement, encompassing aspects related to their structure, composition, and environmental factors. The remarkable propulsive force exhibited by micro/nanomotors makes them valuable for significant biomedical applications, including tumor therapy, bio-detection, bacterial infection therapy, inflammation therapy, gastrointestinal disease therapy, and environmental remediation. Finally, the review addresses the challenges and prospects for the application of micro/nanomotors. Overall, this review emphasizes the transformative potential of micro/nanomotors in overcoming biological barriers and enhancing therapeutic efficacy, highlighting their promising clinical applications across various biomedical fields.

PURPOSE: Shaping and assembling contemporary external fixators rapidly for the severe mandibular fractures remains a challenge, especially in emergency circumstance. We designed a novel external fixator that incorporates universal joints to provide the stabilization for mandibular comminuted fractures. This study aims to confirm the efficacy of this novel external fixator through biomechanical tests in vitro and animal experiments. METHODS: In vitro biomechanical tests were conducted using 6 fresh canine with mandibular defect to simulate critical comminuted fractures. Three mandibles were stabilized by the novel external fixator and other mandibles were fixed by 2.5 mm reconstruction plates. All fixed mandibles were subjected to loads of 350 N on the anterior regions of teeth and 550 N on the first molar of the unaffected side. The stability was evaluated based on the maximum displacement and the slope of the load-displacement curve. In animal experiments, 9 beagles with comminuted mandibular fractures were divided into 3 groups, which were treated with novel external fixation, reconstruction plate, and dental arch bar, respectively. The general observation, the changes in animals' weight, and the surgical duration were recorded and compared among 3 groups. The CT scans were performed at various intervals of 0 day (immediately after the surgery), 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 28 days to analyze the displacement of feature points on the canine mandible and situation of fracture healing at 28 days. The statistical significance was assessed by the two-way analysis of variance test followed by the Bonferroni test, enabling multiple comparisons for all tests using GraphPad Prism10.1.0 (GraphPad Inc, USA). RESULTS: The outcomes of the biomechanical tests indicated that no statistically significant differences were found in terms of the maximum displacement (p = 0.496, 0.079) and the slope of load displacement curves (p = 0.374, 0.349) under 2 load modes between the external and internal fixation groups. The animal experiment data showed that there were minor displacements of feature points between the external and internal fixation groups without statistic difference, while the arch bar group demonstrated inferior stability. The CT analysis revealed that the best fracture healing happened in the internal fixation group, followed by the external fixation and arch baring at 28 days after fixation. The external fixation group had the shortest fixation duration (25.67 ± 3.79) min compared to internal fixation ((70.67 ± 4.51) min, p < 0.001) and arch baring ((42.00 ± 3.00) min, p = 0.046). CONCLUSION: The conclusion of this study highlighted the efficacy and reliability of this novel external fixator in managing mandibular fractures rapidly, offering a viable option for the initial stabilization of comminuted mandibular fractures in the setting of emergency rescue.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are a major health issue, but there is little research to show whether active lumbar exoskeletons are suitable for single-shoulder load. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of wearable lumbar support exoskeleton with single-shoulder load on movement of the lumbar and thoracic spine and plantar pressure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiment was conducted considering ten healthy male young adults. Data about three-dimensional motion angles of the lumbar and thoracic spine, as well as plantar pressure, were collected in the control condition (0% of body weight: 0% BW), experimental condition A (single-shoulder load: 5% BW and 10% BW), and experimental condition B (single-shoulder load and left lateral traction: 5% BW-T and 10% BW-T). The two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted with device and weight as within subject factors. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: In experimental condition A, significant difference observed in the lumbar and thoracic flexion angle compared to 0% BW (all p<0.05). the plantar pressure information was affected by the single-shoulder load especially about plantar pressure. In experimental condition B, there were no significant differences on the all values of lumbar and thoracic angles other than the ROM value of thoracic rotation angle in 5% BW-T and 10% BW-T (p=0.0082 and p=0.0056). Furthermore, the COP of the subject was symmetrical in experimental condition B, the peak force increased compared to 0% BW but less than the single-shoulder load. CONCLUSION: the WLSE provided a possibility for protecting and preventing the human lumbar and thorax in singleshoulder load.

Background: The 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD17B) family has been implicated in the prognosis and treatment prediction of various malignancies; however, its association with bladder cancer (BLCA) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of HSD17B1, as a prognostic biomarker, for the survival of patients with BLCA and to determine its effectiveness as a supplemental biomarker for BLCA. Methods: A series of bioinformatics techniques were applied to investigate the expression of HSD17B1 in different types of cancer and its potential association with the prognosis of BLCA patients using diverse databases. The UALCAN, Human Protein Atlas, cBioPortal, Metascape, GEPIA, MethSurv, and TIMER were employed to analyze expression differences, mutation status, enrichment analysis, overall survival, methylation, and immune-infiltrating cells. The real-time reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) was implemented to detect the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression levels of HSD17B1 in vitro. Results: Elevated mRNA and protein levels of HSD17B1, surpassing normal levels, were observed in BLCA samples. In addition, the BLCA patients with higher mRNA expression level of HSD17B1 significantly reduced the overall survival. Also, several immune infiltrating cells, including mast cell resting CIBERSORT-ABS, have been identified as tumor-associated biomarker genes, with the potential to significantly influence the immunological environment. Finally, qRT-PCR analysis revealed a significant upregulation of HSD17B1 mRNA expression level in the cancer cells compared to the human 293T cells, which was consistent with the bioinformatics data. Conclusion: There is a strong correlation between the elevated HSD17B1 expression and positive prognosis in patients with BLCA. Therefore, HSD17B1 can be used as a prognostic biomarker in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Wearable trunk exoskeletons hold immense potential in fields such as healthcare and industry. Previous research has indicated that intention recognition control plays a crucial role in users' daily use of exoskeletons. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to discuss the characteristics of intention recognition control schemes for intelligent trunk exoskeletons under different control objectives over the past decade. METHODS: Considering the relatively late development of active trunk exoskeletons, we selected papers published in the last decade (2013 to 2023) from the Web of Science, PubMed, and IEEE Xplore databases. In total, 50 articles were selected and examined based on four control objectives. RESULTS: In general, we found that researchers focus on trunk exoskeleton devices designed for assistance and motor augmentation, which rely more on body movement signals as a source for intention recognition. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we identify and discuss several promising research directions that may help to attain a widely accepted control methods, thereby advancing further development of trunk exoskeleton technology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, has gotten considerable attention. Previous studies have demonstrated that clioquinol (CQ) as a metal chelator is a potential drug for the treatment of AD. However, the mode of action of CQ in AD is still unclear. In our study, the antioxidant effects of CQ on yeast cells expressing Aß42 were investigated. We found that CQ could reduce Aß42 toxicity by alleviating reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and lipid peroxidation level in yeast cells. These alterations were mainly attributable to the increased reduced glutathione (GSH) content and independent of activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and/or catalase (CAT). CQ could affect antioxidant enzyme activity by altering the transcription level of related genes. Interestingly, it was noted for the first time that CQ could combine with antioxidant enzymes to reduce their enzymatic activities by molecular docking and circular dichroism spectroscopy. In addition, CQ restored Aß42-mediated disruption of GSH homeostasis via regulating YAP1 expression to protect cells against oxidative stress. Our findings not only improve the current understanding of the mechanism of CQ as a potential drug for AD treatment but also provide ideas for subsequent drug research and development.
