RÉSUMÉ

Tough carboxymethylcellulose nanofibers (CMF)/zirconium (Zr) hydrogels were easily obtained by a freeze-crosslinking method, where Zr-containing HCl solution was added to frozen CMF sol and the mixture was allowed to thaw. The Zr content of the hydrogels increased with increasing Zr concentration in the initial HCl solution. Furthermore, the mechanical strength increased with increasing Zr content. The Young's modulus value was improved by approximately 6 times compared to the CMF hydrogel without Zr, i.e., from 4.5 kPa to 27.2 kPa. The hydrogel had a porous structure with a pore size of 133 ± 37 µm and a CMF-Zr sheet structure around the pores. The obtained CMF-Zr hydrogel exhibited high adsorptivity for fluoride. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) was estimated to be 24.1 mg g-1. This simple gelation method provides useful insights for the development of easy-to-handle hydrogel-based adsorbents.

RÉSUMÉ

We describe nanocellulose (NC) hydrogels formed from chemically unmodified NC by cellulose crystalline transformation and subsequent freeze cross-linking reaction. The freeze cross-linked NC hydrogel with macropores (~100 µm) was prepared by freezing a mixture of NC and NaOH (0.2 mol L-1), adding citric acid to the frozen mixture, and thawing it. Using NaOH and freezing together induced the crystalline transformation of NC from cellulose I to II via freeze concentration. After the crystalline transformation, cross-linking between the NC and CA in the freeze concentration layer provided a strong NC network structure, forming NC hydrogels with high mechanical strength. The structural changes in NC caused by NaOH, freezing, and freeze cross-linking on the angstrom to micrometer scale were investigated with FT-IR, SAXS, PXRD, and SEM. The freeze cross-linked NC hydrogel easily retained powder adsorbents in its inner space by mixing the NC-NaOH sol and the powder, and the hydrogel showed high removal efficiency for heavy metals. The results highlight the versatility of chemically unmodified celluloses in developing functional materials and suggest possible practical applications. This study also provides new insights into the efficient use of chemical reactions of cellulose under freezing conditions.

RÉSUMÉ

A zirconia (ZrO2) stationary phase with a chemically fixed silane coupling agent (trimethyl [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride; TMA), which possesses quaternary ammonium functional groups, is evaluated as a separation column for ion chromatography (IC) of anions. The selectivity for anions varies depending on the amount of TMA immobilized on the ZrO2. The TMA-ZrO2, with an anion-exchange capacity of 17 ± 3 µeq/g, shows an anion-exchange reaction that involves the specific retention of fluoride ion on ZrO2. The TMA-ZrO2 exhibits a decrease of the anion resolution with an increase of the eluent pH and an enhancement of the selective separation of fluoride ion with an increase of the column temperature. Through this study, the TMA-ZrO2 stationary phase shows potential as a new medium for ion separation.

RÉSUMÉ

Under 266-nm (deep ultraviolet, DUV) laser irradiation, an SrB4O7 (SBO) single crystal has been found to exhibit a surface laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of ∼ 16.4 J/cm2, which is higher than those of a synthetic silica glass (4.8 J/cm2) and a calcium fluoride (CaF2) crystal (11.4 J/cm2). By catalyst-referred etching (CARE), the LIDT of an SBO crystal can also be improved to around 24.1 J/cm2, which is 1.4 and 6.0 times higher compared to an unetched crystal and a silica glass, respectively. With high surface LIDTs, SBO single crystals can then be used as optical window materials for high-power DUV laser systems.

RÉSUMÉ

Herein, we evaluated the quality of a double-layer coating method to stably immobilize photocatalysts by photodecomposition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on a stainless-steel wire mesh using a flow analytical system, which included the reactor and conductimetric detector (FAS-CD). The prepared photocatalyst consisted of an amorphous titanium peroxide sol layer and a layer of a sol mixture containing TiO2 and amorphous titanium peroxide. Stable photocatalytic activity was demonstrated through successive photodecomposition tests of DMSO using FAS-CD/equipment.

RÉSUMÉ

The rich composition of solutes and metabolites in sweat and its relative ease of collection upon excretion from skin pores make this class of biofluid an attractive candidate for point of care analysis. Wearable technologies that combine electrochemical sensors with conventional or emerging semiconductor device technologies offer valuable capabilities in sweat sensing, but they are limited to assays that support amperometric, potentiometric, and colorimetric analyses. Here, we present a complementary approach that exploits fluorometric sensing modalities integrated into a soft, skin-interfaced microfluidic system which, when paired with a simple smartphone-based imaging module, allows for in situ measurement of important biomarkers in sweat. A network array of microchannels and a collection of microreservoirs pre-filled with fluorescent probes that selectively react with target analytes in sweat (e.g. probes), enable quantitative, rapid analysis. Field studies on human subjects demonstrate the ability to measure the concentrations of chloride, sodium and zinc in sweat, with accuracy that matches that of conventional laboratory techniques. The results highlight the versatility of advanced fluorescent-based imaging modalities in body-worn sweat microfluidics platforms, and they suggest some practical potential for these ideas.

RÉSUMÉ

The distribution constants of 4-benzoyl-3-phenyl-5-isoxazolone (HPBI) and deprotonated one (PBI-) between hydrophobic ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C1C4im][Tf2N]) and aqueous phases were determined, together with the acid-dissociation constant of HPBI. The solvent extraction of three selected lanthanoid ions (La3+, Eu3+, and Lu3+) with HPBI from aqueous nitrate phase into [C1C4im][Tf2N] has been investigated. Application of the ionic liquid as the extracting phase greatly enhanced the extraction performance of HPBI for lanthanoid ions compared with that in the chloroform system. A slope analysis was conducted in order to compare the results of the solution 4f-ion coordination chemistry in ionic and molecular media. The composition of the extracted species was established to be anionic tetrakis entities, Ln(PBI)4-, for light, middle, and heavy lanthanoid ions in an ionic environment (Ln denotes lanthanoid ion). Nevertheless, the typical neutral chelate lanthanoid complexes of the type Ln(PBI)3 have been detected when the conventional molecular diluent chloroform was applied as an organic phase.

RÉSUMÉ

In this study, a photocatalytic plate bound to highly dispersible silica-doped titanium dioxide (SiT) on a trimethoxysilyl-propyldiethylenetriamine (dien)-coated glass plate (dien-plate) was newly synthesized, and was evaluated by a flow analytical (FA) system, which consists of a photocatalytic reactor and a spectrophotometer, to continuously monitor the absorbance of tested chemicals. The method was not required to collect any sample solution at a constant period. The SiT-dien-plate facilitated the photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) and indigo carmine (InC) in aqueous solutions. Notably, MB was quantitatively photo-decomposed following 18 h of UV-light irradiation, related to the electrostatic adsorption of surface-bound particles. A water-treatment ability of visible-light-responsive vanadium-modified nitrogen/silica co-doped titanium dioxide fixed on the dien-plate was also evaluated by the FA system. It clarified to decompose MB and InC under visible-light irradiation. Finally, the decomposition of a humic substance dissolved from Middle West China peaty soils by the SiT-dien-plate under UV-irradiation was assessed as applying the FA system with a photocatalytic plate.

RÉSUMÉ

This study aimed to evaluate the heavy metal adsorptivity of calcium-alginate-modified diethylenetriamine-silica gel (CaAD) and incorporate this biosorbent into a flow analytical system for heavy metal ions using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The biosorbent was synthesized by electrostatically coating calcium alginate onto diethylenetriamine (dien)-silica gel. Copper ion adsorption tests by a batch method showed that CaAD exhibited a higher adsorption rate compared with other biosorbents despite its low maximum adsorption capacity. Next, CaAD was packed into a 1mL microcolumn, which was connected to a flow analytical system equipped with an FAAS instrument. The flow system quantitatively adsorbed heavy metals and enriched their concentrations. This quantitative adsorption was achieved for pH 3-4 solutions containing 1.0×10(-6) M of heavy metal ions at a flow rate of 5.0 mL min(-1). Furthermore, the metal ions were successfully desorbed from CaAD at low nitric acid concentrations (0.05-0.15 M) than from the polyaminecarboxylic acid chelating resin (Chelex 100). Therefore, CaAD may be considered as a biosorbent that quickly adsorbs and easily desorbs analyte metal ions. In addition, the flow system enhanced the concentrations of heavy metals such as Cu(2+), Zn(2+), and Pb(2+) by 50-fold. This new enrichment system successfully performed the separation and determination of Cu(2+) (5.0×10(-8)M) and Zn(2+) (5.7×10(-8) M) in a river water sample and Pb(2+) (3.8×10(-9) M) in a ground water sample.

RÉSUMÉ

Bile acid transporters belonging to the SLC10A protein family, Na+ taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP or SLC10A1), apical sodium-dependent bile salt transporter (ASBT or SLC10A2), and organic solute transporter alpha (Ost-alpha) have been known to play critical roles in the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids in mammals. In this study, ntcp, asbt, and ost-alpha-1/-2 cDNA were cloned, their tissue distributions were characterized, and the effects of fasting and bile acid administration on their expression were examined in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The structural characteristics of Ntcp, Asbt, and Ost-alpha were well conserved in trout, and three-dimensional structure analysis showed that Ntcp and Asbt were similar to each other. Tissue distribution analysis revealed that trout asbt was primarily expressed in the hindgut, while ntcp expression occurred in the brain, and ost-alpha-1/-2 was mainly expressed in the liver or ovary. Although asbt and ost-alpha-1 mRNA levels in the gut increased in response to fasting for 4 days, ost-alpha-1 expression in the liver decreased. Similarly, bile acid administration increased asbt and ost-alpha-1 expression levels in the gut, while those of ntcp and ost-alpha-2 in the liver decreased. These results suggested that the genes asbt, ntcp, and ost-alpha are involved in bile acid transport in rainbow trout.

RÉSUMÉ

In mammals, cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) and sterol 12α-hydroxylase (CYP8B1) are rate-limiting enzymes in bile acid synthesis. In addition, a small heterodimer partner (SHP) is also known to inhibit bile acid synthesis via the suppression of CYP7A1 and CYP8B1 expression. However, little information is currently available regarding primary structure of the genes involved in bile acid synthesis in fish. We therefore cloned cyp7a1, cyp8b1 and shp genes from rainbow trout and obtained cDNAs encoding two isoforms each of Cyp7a1 (-1 and -2), Cyp8b1 (-1 and -2) and Shp (-1 and -2). Both cyp7a1-1 and -2 encoded proteins of 512 amino acids. Trout cyp7a1-1 was expressed not only primarily in the kidney, pyloric caecum and mid-gut, but also weakly in the liver, eye, gill and ovary. cyp7a1-2 was highly expressed in the liver, pyloric caecum and mid-gut. cyp8b1-1 and -2, which encoded proteins of 512 and 509 amino acids, respectively, were principally expressed in the liver. Both shp-1 and -2, which encoded proteins of 288 and 290 amino acids, respectively, were strongly expressed in the liver, but shp-2 was also highly expressed in the gallbladder and digestive tract. The temporal changes in the expression of cyp7a1-1/-2, cyp8b1-1/-2 and shp-1/-2 in the liver were assessed after consumption of a single meal. Expression of cyp7a1-1/-2 and cyp8b1-1/-2 increased within 3h post feeding (hpf) when the stomach was still approximately 84% full and the gallbladder was almost completely empty. Although the expression of shp-1 did not change after feeding, the expression pattern of shp-2 was inversely related to the expression patterns of cyp7a1-1/-2 and cyp8b1-1/-2. Specifically, shp-2 expression decreased until 3 hpf before returning to initial levels at 24 hpf. These findings suggest that Cyp7a1s/8b1s and Shp-2 function antagonistically in bile acid synthesis in rainbow trout.

RÉSUMÉ

This paper reports on the photodecomposition of aqueous humic acid (HA) by a TiO(2)-coated ceramic foam filter (TCF) reactor and on the potential for the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) upon chlorination of the photocatalytically treated solutions. This photocatalytic reactor can also be applied to the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) in swamp waters. The proposed photocatalytic reaction system was operated as per standardized methodologies. First, the ability of the TCF to decompose HA (a representative compound of NOM) was evaluated from the changes in the total organic carbon (TOC) and UV(254) with the reaction time. Remarkably, TOC removal and UV(254) values ranging from 44% to 61% and from 60% to 83%, respectively, were achieved. The potential for the formation of DBPs (total trihalomethane and total haloacetic acid) by chlorination of the phototreated solution was strongly dependent on the TOC removal and UV(254) values in the solution. The degree of photodecomposition of NOMs in the swamp water samples and the DBP formation potential showed similar trends as in the case of the standard solutions containing HA. The method used in this study could be effectively used to evaluate the efficiency of TCF for reducing HA and NOM, while suppressing the formation of DBP products.

RÉSUMÉ

The photoelectrochemical properties of porous BiVO4 thin-film electrodes on conducting glass for H2 production from water under visible light were investigated. BiVO4 films were prepared by the metal-organic decomposition method, and particles were 90-150 nm in diameter. Under visible-light irradiation, H2 and O2 evolved in a stoichiometric ratio (H2/O2 = 2) from an aqueous solution of Na2SO4 with an external bias. The photocurrent increased with addition of methanol. The band structure of BiVO4 was investigated by open-circuit potential, flat-band potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and calculations based on density functional theory. The top of the valence-band potential of BiVO4 was shifted negatively compared to the potentials of the conventional oxide semiconductors without Bi. We surmise that hybridization between the O-2p and Bi-6s orbitals might contribute to the negative shift of the BiVO4 valence band. Treatment with an aqueous solution of AgNO3 improved the photocurrent of the BiVO4 electrode significantly. The maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency at 420 nm was 44%. This value was the highest among mixed-oxide semiconductor electrodes under visible light irradiation. AgNO3 treatment also improved the stability of the photocurrent. The Ag+ ion in/on the BiVO4 catalyzed the intrinsic photogeneration of oxygen with the holes.
