Alcohol exposure in adolescence is considered a major cause of cognitive impairments later in life including spatial learning and memory. Integrated stress response (ISR), a program of conservative translation and transcription, is crucial in synaptic plasticity and memory. Although previous studies have elucidated ISR in different brain areas involved in learning and memory disorders, the impact of ISR on learning and memory following adolescent alcohol exposure remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) exposure caused spatial learning and memory impairment, combined with neuronal damage in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), nucleus accumbens (NAc) and hippocampus (HIP) in adult rats. Moreover, integrated stress response inhibitor (ISRIB) administration not only improved spatial learning and memory impairment and neuronal damage but also inhibited the endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER) and reversed changes in synaptic proteins. These findings suggested that ISRIB ameliorates AIE exposure-induced spatial learning and memory deficits by improving neural morphology and synaptic function through inhibiting ER stress signaling pathway in the mPFC, NAc and HIP in adulthood. Our findings may enhance comprehension of cognitive function and neuronal effects of adolescent ethanol exposure and ISRIB treatment may be an underlying potential option for addressing alcohol-induced learning and memory deficits.

The article proposes an optimization algorithm using a hierarchical environment selection strategyto solve the deficiencies of current multimodal multi-objective optimization algorithms in obtaining the completeness and convergence of Pareto optimal Sets (PSs). Firstly, the algorithm in this article is framed by a differential evolutionary algorithm (DE) and uses a special crowding distance to design a neighborhood-based individual variation strategy, which also ensures the diversity, and then special crowding distance is used to help populations with non-dominated sorting. In the stage of environmental selection, a strategy of hierarchical selection of individuals was designed, which selects sorted non-dominant ranked individual layer by layer according to the ratio, which allows potential individuals tobe explored. Finally, in the stage of evolution of individuals, the convergence and diversity of populations were investigated, anddifferent mutation strategies were selectedaccording to the characteristics of individuals. DE reproduction strategies are used for iteration, preventing individuals from avoiding premature convergence and ensuring the algorithm's searchability. These strategies help the algorithm to obtain more diverse and uniformly distributed PSs and Pareto Front (PF). The algorithm of this article compares with several other excellent algorithms on 13 test problems, and the test results show that all the algorithms of this article exhibit superior performance.

The Sturmdorf type sutures are traditionally used for obtaining hemostasis after a cold knife conization. In this article and accompanying video, we provided a simplified modification of the Sturmdorf suture to further reduce the risk of postoperative bleeding and cervical stenosis. Our modified Sturmdorf suture is essentially a large horizontal figure-of-eight suture, with simultaneous small bites on the mucosa of the anterior and posterior lips drawing the cervical mucosa to cover the denuded cervical stump. The advantages of this modification are: (1) The surgery is simple, accomplished with only one suture; (2) excellent hemostasis is achieved by incorporating the cervical branch of the descending rami of the uterine artery lateral to the cervix in the suture loop; (3) the single-suture technique provides more appropriate tension on the cervix when tying the knot and pulls the cervical mucosa towards the cervical canal from six symmetrical directions, evenly distributed tension helps restore the preferable cylindrical shape of the cervical stump; and (4) the intersection point of the figure-of-eight suture is located in the cervical canal, where the tissue undergoes minimal deformation when the suture loop is tightened, therefore stenosis of the uterine cervix is rare.

This study investigated whether lower extremity stiffness plays a role in the enhancement of change of direction speed (CODS) and the duration of this enhancement after dynamic loaded warm-up (DLWU). Fifteen badminton athletes underwent DLWU, and CODS, individual muscle and tendon stiffness, and vertical stiffness were measured before DLWU and 6, 12, and 18 min after DLWU. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and covariance analysis. Significant improvements in CODS were found at 6, 12, and 18 min post-DLWU compared to pre-DLWU (p < 0.05). The Achilles tendon stiffness of the dominant leg increased at 6 min (p = 0.039) and 18 min (p = 0.024) post-DLWU compared to pre-DLWU. Achilles tendon stiffness of the dominant leg had a significant effect on improving CODS (p > 0.05). CODS improvement lasted up to 18 min after DLWU in badminton athletes, potentially related to increased Achilles tendon stiffness of the dominant leg.

Objectives: Through the reflection of young breast cancer women on their selves and identities, we explored expectations of the wife role that they need to fulfill to return to their families, aimed to provide a reference basis for medical professionals to develop interventions related to cancer family rehabilitation. Methods: Descriptive phenomenological methods and purposive sampling were used. Young breast cancer patients and their spouses were selected for semi-structured face-to-face interviews in the study from March to April 2023 at the department of breast surgery and oncology center of a Class A tertiary hospital in Xuzhou City, China. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological approach. Results: Twenty patients and six spouses were interviewed. The mean patient age was (35.95 ± 3.36) years, and the mean spouse was (37.67 ± 5.28) years. Young breast cancer patients were concerned about three main wife expectations during their treatment and rehabilitation: preserving self-love and self-esteem (paying attention to physical health, embracing the disease, and regaining confidence in female characters); adjustment of conjugal relationships (harmonious and effective couple communication, providing support for marriage and love, and creating a beautiful married life together); assisting in family recovery (relieving stress on spouses from caregiving and finances, and management of daily household chores). Conclusions: The wife role expectations of young breast cancer women and their spouses encompass three core aspects: self, couple, and family. Self-esteem and self-love are the most fundamental expectations of the wife role, while adjusting the couple's relationship and assistance in family rehabilitation represent higher expectations. This study can help healthcare professionals and cancer families gain a more comprehensive understanding of the wife role expectations for young cancer women, thereby enabling the development of couple-centered interventions to promote patient recovery and enhance the resilience of marriages and families.

Lycopene, a carotenoid with numerous physiological benefits, particularly in its Z-isomer form, faces challenges in its application due to low chemical stability. To address this limitation, high internal phase emulsion was successfully synthesized using ovalbumin-chitosan complexes. The aim was to enhance the stability of lycopene including Z-lycopene. The solubility, particle size, ζ-potential and uniformity of the mixture were dependent on pH value and biopolymer proportion. Notably, optimal ovalbumin-chitosan complex formation occurred at pH 2.5 with a ratio of 4:1 resulting in the highest solubility and optimal uniformity which contributed to its superior emulsification properties. Evaluation of encapsulating efficiency and loading amount revealed 98.19% and 1.7661 mg/g respectively for lycopene in ovalbumin-chitosan stabilized emulsions, inhibiting the transformation from Z-lycopene to (all-E)-lycopene. The encapsulated lycopene possessed UV stability where retention rate remained high at 81.86%. The retention rate was up to 65.37% and 41.82% at 45 °C and 80 °C, respectively.

Rapid and accurate diagnostic methods are crucial for managing viral gastroenteritis in children, a leading cause of global childhood morbidity and mortality. This study introduces a novel microfluidic-Flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1)-assisted isothermal amplification (MFIA) method for simultaneously detecting major viral pathogens associated with childhood diarrhea-rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus. Leveraging the specificity-enhancing properties of FEN1 with a universal dspacer-modified flap probe and the adaptability of microfluidic technology, MFIA demonstrated an exceptional detection limit (5 copies/µL) and specificity in the simultaneous detection of common diarrhea pathogens in clinical samples. Our approach addresses the limitations of current diagnostic techniques by offering a rapid (turn around time <1 h), cost-effective, easy design steps (universal flap design), and excellent detection performance method suitable for multiple applications. The validation of MFIA against the gold-standard PCR method using 150 actual clinical samples showed no statistical difference in the detection performance of the two methods, positioning it as a potential detection tool in pediatric diagnostic virology and public health surveillance. In conclusion, the MFIA method promises to transform pediatric infectious disease diagnostics and contribute significantly to global health efforts combating viral gastroenteritis.

With the rapid development of emerging information technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, the world has entered the era of big data. In the face of growing medical big data, research on the privacy protection of personal information has attracted more and more attention, but few studies have analyzed and forecasted the research hotspots and future development trends on the privacy protection. Presently, to systematically and comprehensively summarize the relevant privacy protection literature in the context of big healthcare data, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to clarify the spatial and temporal distribution and research hotspots of privacy protection using the information visualization software CiteSpace. The literature papers related to privacy protection in the Web of Science were collected from 2012 to 2023. Through analysis of the time, author and countries distribution of relevant publications, we found that after 2013, research on the privacy protection has received increasing attention and the core institution of privacy protection research is the university, but the countries show weak cooperation. Additionally, keywords like privacy, big data, internet, challenge, care, and information have high centralities and frequency, indicating the research hotspots and research trends in the field of the privacy protection. All the findings will provide a comprehensive privacy protection research knowledge structure for scholars in the field of privacy protection research under the background of health big data, which can help them quickly grasp the research hotspots and choose future research projects.

Background: While numeric scales to represent pain intensity have been well validated, individuals use various conceptualizations when assigning a number to pain intensity, referred to as pain rating schema. The 18-item Pain Schema Inventory (PSI-18) quantifies pain rating schema by asking for numeric values for multiple mild, moderate or severe pain conditions. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of a shortened form of the PSI, using only 6 items (PSI-6). Methods: A secondary analysis was performed on two existing datasets. The first (n = 641) involved a community-based population that completed the PSI-18. The second (n = 182) included participants with chronic pain who completed the PSI-6 twice, one week apart. We assessed face validity, convergent validity, offset biases, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of the PSI-6 compared to the PSI-18. Results: Both the PSI-18 and PSI-6 demonstrated excellent face validity. The PSI-6 demonstrated excellent convergent validity relative to the PSI-18, with correlations from r = 0.88 to 0.92. Bland-Altman plots revealed offset biases near zero (< 0.22 on 0-10 scale) across all categories of mild, moderate, severe and average pain. Internal consistency was excellent, with Cronbach's Alpha = 0.91 and 0.80, for PSI-18 and PSI-6 respectively. Test-retest reliability of the PSI-6 was high with correlations from r = 0.70-0.76. Conclusion: The PSI-6 is a valid and reliable tool to assess pain rating schema with reduced subject burden, to better interpret individuals' pain ratings and adjust for inter-individual variability.

Purpose: This study aimed to observe the effect of bilateral transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block on the MACBAR of sevoflurane in gynecological patients with laparoscopic pneumoperitoneal stimulation. Patients and Methods: Fifty patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery were randomly assigned to either the control group (n= 25) or the TAP block group (n= 25). Patients in the TAP block group were subjected to a bilateral transversal abdominal muscle plane block with 0.33% ropivacaine (20 mL on each side) guided by ultrasound. The control group received an equal volume of normal saline. The MACBAR of sevoflurane in each group was determined using a sequential allocation technique. Results: The MACBAR of sevoflurane in the TAP block group was significantly lower than that in the control group (4.20% [95% confidence interval {CI}, 4.02%-4.38%] vs 5.03% [95% CI, 4.89%-5.18%]). Conclusion: Bilateral TAP block can reduce the MACBAR of sevoflurane in gynecological patients with pneumoperitoneum stimulation. Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR2100046517. Women go through several predictable conditions and symptoms during menopause that are caused by age, changes in sex hormone levels, and other factors. Conventional menopause hormone therapy has raised serious concerns about the increased risks of cancers, blood clots, depression, etc. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) that can be both agonists and antagonists of estrogen receptors in a tissue-specific manner are being developed to reduce the health concerns associated with menopause hormone therapy. Here, we have searched the Chinese national traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) patent database to identify potential SERM-like compounds with reduced health risks. TCM has been widely used for treating complex symptoms associated with menopause syndrome and thus can be a particularly rich source for pharmaceutical alternatives with SERM properties. After extensive literature review and molecular simulation, we conclude that protopanaxatriol, paeoniflorin, astragalin, catalpol, and hyperoside among others may be particularly promising as SERM-like compounds in treating the menopausal syndrome. Compounds in TCM hold promise in yielding comparable outcomes to hormone therapy but with reduced associated risks, thus presenting promising avenues for their clinical applications.

One vision-threatening side effect of systematic diabetes mellitus is diabetic retinopathy (DR). Recent studies have revealed that the development and progression of DR depend critically on inflammation resulting from diabetes. By attracting leukocytes to endothelium, the higher production of the inflammatory mediators induces degeneration of retinal capillaries, hence increasing vascular permeability and thrombosis probability. The leukocytes that are recruited eventually generate additional proinflammatory and proangiogenic substances, resulting in the increased infiltration of leukocytes in the retina. This process also leads to changes in the blood retinal barrier and the formation of new blood vessels, which helps to counteract the damage caused by the blockage of blood flow. IL-12 family members, IL-12, IL-23, IL-27, and IL-35, play a crucial role in regulating the responses of T helper (Th)1 and Th17 cell populations. The collected data from studies investigating the levels of IL-12 family members in the blood and eye tissues suggest that IL-12 is linked to DR, indicating that it may have a role in the development of DR as a sequential component of the immune response. This review specifically examines the possibility of using IL-12 family cytokines as a therapeutic approach for diabetes, taking into consideration their involvement in the development of DR.

Women show resilience to cognitive aging, in the absence of dementia, in many populations. To dissect sex differences, we utilized the FCG and XY* mouse models. Female gonads and sex chromosomes improved cognition in aging mice of both sexes. Further, presence of a second X in male and female mice conferred cognitive resilience while its absence in females blocked it. In the hippocampal proteome of aging female mice, the second X increased proteins involved in synaptogenesis signaling - a potential pathway to improved cognition.

Recent evidence suggests that necroptosis may contribute to the development of kidney injury. Renalase is a novel secretory protein that exerts potent prosurvival and anti-inflammatory effects. We hypothesized that renalase could protect the kidney from salt-induced injury by modulating necroptosis. High salt and renalase treatments were administered to Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats, renalase knockout (KO) mice, and HK-2 cells. Furthermore, a cohort of 514 eligible participants was utilized to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes RIPK1, RIPK3, and MLKL, and the risk of subclinical renal damage (SRD) over 14 years. A high-salt diet significantly increased the expression of key components of necroptosis, namely RIPK1, RIPK3, and MLKL, as well as the release of inflammatory factors in SS rats. Treatment with recombinant renalase reduced both necroptosis and inflammation. In renalase KO mice, salt-induced kidney injury was more severe than in wild-type mice, but supplementation with renalase attenuated the kidney injury. In vitro experiments with HK-2 cells revealed high salt increased necroptosis and inflammation. Renalase exhibited a dose-dependent decrease in salt-induced necroptosis, and this cytoprotective effect was negated by the knockdown of PMCA4b, which is the receptor of renalase. Furthermore, the cohort study showed that SNP rs3736724 in RIPK1 and rs11640974 in MLKL were significantly associated with the risk of SRD over 14 years. Our analysis shows that necroptosis plays a significant role in the development of salt-induced kidney injury and that renalase confers its cytoprotective effects by inhibiting necroptosis and inflammation.

Reprogramming tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) to an inflammatory phenotype effectively increases the potential of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. Artificial mitochondrial transplantation, an emerging and safe strategy, has made brilliant achievements in regulating the function of recipient cells in preclinic and clinic, but its performance in reprogramming the immunophenotype of TAMs has not been reported. Here, the metabolism of M2 TAMs is proposed resetting from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to glycolysis for polarizing M1 TAMs through targeted transplantation of mannosylated mitochondria (mPEI/M1mt). Mitochondria isolated from M1 macrophages are coated with mannosylated polyethyleneimine (mPEI) through electrostatic interaction to form mPEI/M1mt, which can be targeted uptake by M2 macrophages expressed a high level of mannose receptors. Mechanistically, mPEI/M1mt accelerates phosphorylation of NF-κB p65, MAPK p38 and JNK by glycolysis-mediated elevation of intracellular ROS, thus prompting M1 macrophage polarization. In vivo, the transplantation of mPEI/M1mt excellently potentiates therapeutic effects of anti-PD-L1 by resetting an antitumor proinflammatory tumor microenvironment and stimulating CD8 and CD4 T cells dependent immune response. Altogether, this work provides a novel platform for improving cancer immunotherapy, meanwhile, broadens the scope of mitochondrial transplantation technology in clinics in the future.

The pattern of itching in patients with atopic dermatitis has not been systematically studied. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pattern of itching in adults with atopic dermatitis using questionnaires to assess for a circadian rhythm of itching in participating patients at a single institution (n = 241). A self-report questionnaire was used to assess circadian rhythm and intensity of itching in patients. In addition, the patients' disease severity (Eczema Area and Severity Index [EASI]) and quality of life (Dermatology Life Quality Index [DLQI]) were assessed. Itching occurred most frequently (74.69%) and with the greatest severity (62.66%) between 20:00 and 00:00, and the least number of patients (25.31%) experienced itching between 04:00 and 08:00. The DLQI and EASI scores both correlated with the average and maximum itch intensity (r = 0.582, r = 0.533, respectively; r = 0.539, r = 0.517, respectively; p < 0.001). The DLQI and EASI scores were associated with average itch intensity (B = 0.179, B = 0.204, respectively; 95% CI: 0.112 to 0.246, 95% CI: 0.096 to 0.313, respectively; p < 0.001), and the EASI score was associated with males and family history (B = 0.285, B = 0.287, respectively; 95% CI: 0.094 to 0.476, 95% CI: 0.096 to 0.478, respectively; p = 0.003). Adult patients with atopic dermatitis exhibited a circadian rhythm of itching; these study results could positively impact treatment approaches.

This study assesses the efficacy of bilateral mesh sacrospinous ligament suspension (MSSLS) compared to laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC) in patients with uterine prolapse. Ninety-eight patients with uterine prolapse were evaluated at our hospital from January 2021 to January 2023. Patients were equally divided into two groups: the study group (undergoing MSSLS) and the control group (undergoing LSC) using a random number table. Various parameters including operation time, bleeding volume, indwelling catheter time, exhaust time, hospital stay, pelvic organ prolapse stage, postoperative recurrence rate, pain severity, quality of life, pelvic floor function, impact on sexual life, complications, and recurrence rate were recorded. The study group showed significant reductions in operation time, bleeding volume, indwelling catheter time, exhaust time, and hospital stay compared to the control group (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in Aa, Ba, Ap, Bp, and C between the two groups before surgery (P > 0.05), but six months postoperatively, these indexes were significantly lower in the study group (P < 0.05). Pain severity did not differ significantly between the two groups before surgery (P > 0.05), but was significantly lower in the study group six months postoperatively (P < 0.05). Quality of life, pelvic floor function, and sexual life quality did not significantly differ before surgery, at 6 months, and at 12 months postoperatively (P > 0.05). All patients were followed up for 12-14 months, with an average follow-up time of (13.02 ± 1.36) months. The incidence of complications was significantly lower in the study group (P < 0.05), but there were no recurrences in either group, thus the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). MSSLS emerges as a safe and efficacious treatment for uterine prolapse, notably reducing both complications and recurrence rates, rendering it suitable for broad clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate physical activity (PA) and good sleep are beneficial to maternal and fetal health. This paper sought to explore the associations of PA and sleep quality among healthy women at the first and second trimesters of pregnancy on mental health and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Totally 268 healthy pregnant women were retrospectively analyzed as study subjects, 134 each in the first trimester (FT) and second trimester (ST). Their baseline clinical data were obtained respectively at two stages of pregnancy. The PA/sleep quality of subjects were assessed through the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire-Chinese version (PPAQ-C)/Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale. The mental health was assessed via the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The correlations of PA and sleep quality with mental health were analyzed using Spearman correlation analysis. Pregnancy outcomes of all subjects, associations of moderate intensity (MI) PA and sleep quality with adverse pregnancy outcomes, and independent influencing factors for adverse outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: Pregnant women in the ST group exhibited higher levels of MI, worse sleep quality, and lower levels of anxiety and depression than those in the FT group. Anxiety and depression were negatively correlated with MI but positively linked with PSQI scores at the first and second trimesters. MI ≥ 7.5 MET-h/week and good sleep quality were associated with a reduced incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. CONCLUSION: MI ≥ 7.5 MET-h/week and good sleep quality at the first and second trimesters of pregnancy benefit mental health and markedly reduce the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Cervical cancer remains a significant health burden in China, characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, which are exacerbated by low Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage, leading to substantial loss of productivity, emotional suffering, and family strain. Understanding factors that influence HPV awareness and knowledge is crucial for developing effective educational strategies. This cross-sectional study, conducted from September to October 2022, involved 2,679 college students from various educational institutions in Jiangsu Province, China. Data were collected via an online questionnaire covering demographics, HPV knowledge, and vaccination behaviors. Statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests and multifactorial logistic regression, were used to identify factors influencing HPV knowledge. The study revealed that while over 90% of students correctly identified HPV's transmission and risks, significant knowledge gaps and misconceptions persist, particularly regarding HPV's association with HIV/AIDS and its treatment. Factors significantly associated with better HPV knowledge included age (22-24 years), female gender, being a medical major, being in a relationship, familiarity with HPV, and participation in sexual education programs. Despite a high willingness to receive the HPV vaccine (91.64%), actual vaccination rates remained low. These findings suggest that while Chinese college students were generally aware of HPV, targeted educational interventions are essential to address knowledge gaps and promote HPV vaccination effectively.

RÉSUMÉ

The maximum clique problem in graph theory is a well-known challenge that involves identifying the complete subgraph with the highest number of nodes in a given graph, which is a problem that is hard for nondeterministic polynomial time (NP-hard problem). While finding the exact application of the maximum clique problem in the real world is difficult, the relaxed clique model quasi-clique has emerged and is widely applied in fields such as bioinformatics and social network analysis. This study focuses on the maximum quasi-clique problem and introduces two algorithms, NF1 and NR1. These algorithms make use of previous iteration information through an information feedback model, calculate the information feedback score using fitness weighting, and update individuals in the current iteration based on the benchmark algorithm and selected previous individuals. The experimental results from a significant number of composite and real-world graphs indicate that both algorithms outperform the original benchmark algorithm in dense instances, while also achieving comparable results in sparse instances.
