Dysregulation of the transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) signaling pathway regulates cancer stem cells (CSCs) and drug sensitivity, whereas it remains largely unknown how feedback regulatory mechanisms are hijacked to fuel drug-resistant CSCs. Through a genome-wide CRISPR activation screen utilizing stem-like drug-resistant properties as a readout, the TGF-ß receptor-associated binding protein 1 (TGFBRAP1) is identified as a TGF-ß-inducible positive feedback regulator that governs sensitivity to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and promotes liver cancer stemness. By interacting with and stabilizing the TGF-ß receptor type 1 (TGFBR1), TGFBRAP1 plays an important role in potentiating TGF-ß signaling. Mechanistically, TGFBRAP1 competes with E3 ubiquitin ligases Smurf1/2 for binding to TGFΒR1, leading to impaired receptor poly-ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Moreover, hyperactive TGF-ß signaling in turn up-regulates TGFBRAP1 expression in drug-resistant CSC-like cells, thereby constituting a previously uncharacterized feedback mechanism to amplify TGF-ß signaling. As such, TGFBRAP1 expression is correlated with TGFΒR1 levels and TGF-ß signaling activity in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, as well as overall survival and disease recurrence in multiple HCC cohorts. Therapeutically, blocking TGFBRAP1-mediated stabilization of TGFBR1 by selective inhibitors alleviates Regorafenib resistance via reducing CSCs. Collectively, targeting feedback machinery of TGF-ß signaling pathway may be an actionable approach to mitigate drug resistance and liver cancer stemness.

BACKGROUND: Leukocyte Ig-like receptor B family 4 (LILRB4) as an immune checkpoint on myeloid cells is a potential target for tumor therapy. Extensive osteolytic bone lesion is the most characteristic feature of multiple myeloma. It is unclear whether ectopic LILRB4 on multiple myeloma regulates bone lesion. METHODS: The conditioned medium (CM) from LILRB4-WT and -KO cells was used to analyze the effects of LILRB4 on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Xenograft, syngeneic and patient derived xenograft models were constructed, and micro-CT, H&E staining were used to observe the bone lesion. RNA-seq, cytokine array, qPCR, the activity of luciferase, Co-IP and western blotting were used to clarify the mechanism by which LILRB4 mediated bone damage in multiple myeloma. RESULTS: We comprehensively analyzed the expression of LILRB4 in various tumor tissue arrays, and found that LILRB4 was highly expressed in multiple myeloma samples. The patient's imaging data showed that the higher the expression level of LILRB4, the more serious the bone lesion in patients with multiple myeloma. The conditioned medium from LILRB4-WT not -KO cells could significantly promote the differentiation and maturation of osteoclasts. Xenograft, syngeneic and patient derived xenograft models furtherly confirmed that LILRB4 could mediate bone lesion of multiple myeloma. Next, cytokine array was performed to identify the differentially expressed cytokines, and RELT was identified and regulated by LILRB4. The overexpression or exogenous RELT could regenerate the bone damage in LILRB4-KO cells in vitro and in vivo. The deletion of LILRB4, anti-LILRB4 alone or in combination with bortezomib could significantly delay the progression of bone lesion of multiple myeloma. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that LILRB4 promoted the bone lesion by promoting the differentiation and mature of osteoclasts through secreting RELT, and blocking LILRB4 singling pathway could inhibit the bone lesion.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite with a worldwide distribution. As a zoonotic pathogen, E. bieneusi can infect a wide range of wildlife hosts through the fecal-oral route. Although the feces of flying squirrels (Trogopterus xanthipes) are considered a traditional Chinese medicine (as "faeces trogopterori"), no literature is available on E. bieneusi infection in flying squirrels to date. In this study, a total of 340 fresh flying squirrel fecal specimens from two captive populations were collected in Pingdingshan city, China, to detect the prevalence of E. bieneusi and assess their zoonotic potential. By nested PCR amplification of the ITS gene, six specimens tested positive, with positive samples from each farm, with an overall low infection rate of 1.8%. The ITS sequences revealed three genotypes, including known genotype D and two novel genotypes, HNFS01 and HNFS02. Genotype HNFS01 was the most prevalent (4/6, 66.7%). Phylogenetic analysis showed that all genotypes clustered into zoonotic Group 1, with the novel genotypes clustering into different subgroups. To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. bieneusi infection in flying squirrels, suggesting that flying squirrels could act as a potential reservoir and zoonotic threat for E. bieneusi transmission to humans in China.


Title: Occurrence et génotypage d'Enterocytozoon bieneusi chez les écureuils volants (Trogopterus xanthipes) de Chine. Abstract: Enterocytozoon bieneusi est un parasite microsporidien intracellulaire obligatoire présent dans le monde entier. En tant qu'agent pathogène zoonotique, E. bieneusi peut infecter un large éventail d'hôtes sauvages par la voie fécale-orale. Bien que les excréments d'écureuils volants (Trogopterus xanthipes) soient considérés comme un ingrédient de médecine traditionnelle chinoise (comme « faeces trogopterori ¼), aucune littérature n'est disponible à ce jour sur l'infection par E. bieneusi chez les écureuils volants. Dans cette étude, un total de 340 spécimens fécaux frais d'écureuils volants provenant de deux populations captives ont été collectés dans la ville de Pingdingshan, en Chine, pour détecter la prévalence d'E. bieneusi et évaluer leur potentiel zoonotique. Par amplification PCR nichée du gène ITS, six échantillons se sont révélés positifs, avec des échantillons positifs dans chaque ferme, et un taux d'infection global faible, à 1,8 %. Les séquences ITS ont révélé trois génotypes, dont le génotype D connu et deux nouveaux génotypes, HNFS01 et HNFS02. Le génotype HNFS01 était le plus répandu (4/6, 66,7 %). L'analyse phylogénétique a montré que tous les génotypes se regroupaient dans le groupe zoonotique 1, les nouveaux génotypes se regroupant en différents sous-groupes. À notre connaissance, il s'agit du premier rapport d'infection par E. bieneusi chez des écureuils volants, ce qui suggère que les écureuils volants pourraient agir comme un réservoir potentiel et une menace zoonotique pour la transmission d'E. bieneusi aux humains en Chine.

Defluoridation of coal mining water is of great significance for sustainable development of coal industry in western China. A novel one-step mechanochemical method was developed to prepare polymeric aluminum modified powder activated carbon (PAC) for effective fluoride removal from coal mining water. Aluminum was stably loaded on the PAC through facile solid-phase reaction between polymeric aluminum (polyaluminum chloride (PACl) or polyaluminum ferric chloride (PAFC)) and PAC (1:15 W/W). Fluoride adsorption on PACl and PAFC modified PAC (C-PACl and C-PAFC) all reached equilibrium within 5 min, at rate of 2.56 g mg-1 sec-1 and 1.31 g mg-1 sec-1 respectively. Larger increase of binding energy of Al on C-PACl (AlF bond: 76.64 eV and AlFOH bond: 77.70 eV) relative to that of Al on C-PAFC (AlF bond: 76.52 eV) explained higher fluoride uptake capacity of C-PACl. Less chloride was released from C-PACl than that from C-PAFC due to its higher proportion of covalent chlorine and lower proportion of ionic chlorine. The elements mapping and atomic composition proved the stability of Al loaded on the PAC as well as the enrichment of fluoride on both C-PACl and C-PAFC. The Bader charge, formation energy and bond length obtained from DFT computational results explained the fluoride adsorption mechanism further. The carbon emission was 7.73 kg CO2-eq/kg adsorbent prepared through mechanochemical process, which was as low as 1:82.3 to 1:8.07 × 104 compared with the ones prepared by conventional hydrothermal methods.

The scarcity of freshwater resources and increasing demand for drinking water have driven the development of durable and sustainable desalination technologies. Although MXene composites have shown promise due to their excellent photothermal conversion and high thermal conductivity, their high hydrophilicity often leads to salt precipitation and low durability. In this study, we present a novel Cellulose (CF)/MXene paper with a Janus hydrophobic/hydrophilic configuration for long-term and efficient solar-driven desalination. The paper features a dual-layer structure, with the upper hydrophobic layer composed of CF/MXene paper exhibiting convexness to serve as a photothermal layer with exceptional salt rejection properties. Simultaneously, the bottom porous layer made of CF acts as an efficient thermal insulation. This unique design effectively minimizes heat loss and facilitates efficient water transportation. The Janus CF/MXene paper demonstrates a high evaporation rate of 1.11 kg m-2h-1 and solar thermal conversion efficiency of 82.52 % under 1 sun irradiation. Importantly, even after 2500 h of operation in a simulated seawater environment, the paper maintains a stable evaporation rate without significant salt deposition and biodegradation due to an antibacterial rate exceeding 90 %. These findings highlight the potential of the Janus CF/MXene paper for scalable manufacturing and practical applications in solar-driven desalination.

Granular sludge is an alternative technology for the direct treatment of acidic nitrate-containing wastewater. Rapid remediation of disintegrated granules is essential to achieve efficient nitrogen removal. In this study, denitrifying granules were inactivated and disintegrated when the influent nitrate-nitrogen concentration was elevated from 240 to 360 mg L-1 in acidic wastewater (pH = 4.1) in a sequencing batch reactor. Tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) decreased by 60%, and extracellular protein (PN) was the main component of the reduced EPS. The three-dimensional excitation emission matrices (3D-EEM) results confirmed that the PNs that decreased were mainly tryptophan-like, tyrosine-like, and aromatic. This study further confirmed that the decrease in PN was mainly from the destruction of C=O (amide I) and N-H functional groups. Overloading of nitrogen-inhibited denitrifying activity and the destruction and dissolution of TB-EPS by acidic pH were responsible for granule disintegration, with PNs playing a major role in maintaining granule stability. Based on this, new granules with an average particle size of 454.4 µm were formed after calcium chloride addition; EPS nearly doubled during granule formation with PN as the dominant component, accounting for 64.7-78.4% of the EPS. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that PN-PN adhesion increased by 1.6-4.9 times in the presence of calcium ions, accelerating the re-granulation of disintegrated particles. This study provides new insights into the disintegration and remediation of granular sludge under acidic conditions.

Exploring the promiscuity of native enzymes presents a promising strategy for expanding their synthetic applications, particularly for catalyzing challenging reactions in non-native contexts. In this study, we explore the promiscuous potential of old yellow enzymes (OYEs) to facilitate the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction (MBH reaction), leveraging substrate similarities between MBH reaction and reduction reaction. Using mass spectrometry and spectroscopic techniques, we confirm promiscuity of GkOYE in both MBH and reduction reactions. By blocking H- and H+ transfer pathways, we engineer GkOYE.8, which loses its reduction ability but enhances its MBH activity. The structural basis of MBH reaction catalyzed by GkOYE.8 is obtained through mutation studies and kinetic simulations. Furthermore, enantiocomplementary mutants GkOYE.11 and GkOYE.13 are obtained by directed evolution, exhibiting the ability to accept various aromatic aldehydes and alkenes as substrates. This study demonstrates the potential of leveraging substrate similarities to unlock enzyme functionalities, enabling the catalysis of new-to-nature reactions.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have attracted the attention of many researchers due to their remarkable advantages and biosafety. We offer insights into the recent advances of MSNs in CRC treatment and their potential clinical application value.

Purse-string suture with nylon cords and metal clips under the endoscope is a novel therapeutic technique which is minimally invasive and it is particularly indicated for the closure and repair of gastrointestinal fistula or perforations such as duodenal fistulae. Duodenal fistulae are often caused by medical manipulation, disease progression or trauma. Once this occurs, it leads to a series of pathophysiologic changes and a variety of complications. In most cases, these complications will exacerbate the damage to the organism, and the complications are difficult to treat and can lead to infections, nutrient loss, multi-organ dysfunction and many other adverse effects. In this case report, the use of endoscopic nylon cords combined with purse-string suture and metal clips in the treatment of duodenal fistula is presented and discussed. The patient was treated with endoscopic purse-string suture and the duodenal fistula was significantly improved. The results indicate that endoscopic purse-string suture is an effective strategy for the treatment of duodenal fistulae.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) has emerged as the foremost cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) globally. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays a critical role in DN progression. Triterpenoid saponin from Aralia taibaiensis (sAT) has been reported to possess anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant effects. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of sAT on DN treatment and elucidate potential underlying mechanisms. A high-fat diet (HFD) and Streptozotocin (STZ) were employed to induce DN in male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats which were subsequently treated with varying concentrations of sAT for 8 weeks. Our findings reveal that different doses of sAT significantly mitigated hyperglycemia, reduced urinary albumin excretion, and decreased plasma creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in DN rats. Moreover, sAT administration improved body weight, alleviated renal fibrosis and histopathological changes in the diabetic kidneys. Notably, sAT treatment partially restored increased Bax expression and decreased Bcl-2 expression. Additionally, sAT inhibited ER stress-related proteins, including GRP78, p-PERK, ATF4 and CHOP in kidneys of DN rats. These results suggest that sAT ameliorated experimental diabetic nephropathy, at least in part, through ER stress pathway. These findings provide a scientific basis for the potential development of sAT as a therapeutic agent for DN treatment.

Background and Objectives: Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) imaging is a valuable tool for predicting lymph node (LN) metastasis in lung cancer patients. This study aimed to develop a risk-scoring model based on EBUS multimodal imaging (grayscale, Doppler mode, elastography) to predict LN metastasis in lung cancer patients. Patients and Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 350 metastatic LNs in 314 patients with lung cancer and 124 reactive LNs in 96 patients with nonspecific inflammation. The sonographic findings were compared with the final pathology results and clinical follow-up. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the independent risk factors of metastatic LNs. According to the ß coefficients of corresponding indicators in logistic regression analysis, a risk-scoring model was established. Receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to evaluate the predictive capability of model. Results: Multivariate analysis showed that short axis >10 mm, distinct margin, absence of central hilar structure, presence of necrosis, nonhilar vascularity, and elastography score 4 to 5 were independent predictors of metastatic LNs. Both short axis and margin were scored 1 point, and the rest of independent predictors were scored 2 points. The combination of 3 EBUS modes had the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic and accuracy of 0.884 (95% confidence interval, 0.846-0.922) and 87.55%, respectively. The risk stratification was as follows: 0 to 2 points, malignancy rate of 11.11%, low suspicion; 3 to 10 points, malignancy rate of 86.77%, high suspicion. Conclusions: The risk-scoring model based on EBUS multimodal imaging can effectively evaluate metastatic LNs in lung cancer patients to support clinical decision making.

Ultraviolet-based optical wireless communication (OWC) is emerging as a significant technology for the next-generation secure communication, particularly within the solar-blind spectra. In this study, we have synthesized two types of green-emitting II-VI family colloidal quantum dots (QDs), specifically ZnCdSe/ZnS and CdSe/CdZnS/ZnS QDs, which are stimulated by ultraviolet (UV) and solar-blind deep-ultraviolet (DUV) light, respectively. With a transmission distance of 1.5 m, the maximum data rate of ZnCdSe/ZnS QDs reaches 40 Mb/s, which is below the forward-error-correction (FEC) limit (3.8 × 10-3) when excited by 385-nm UV light. However, both brightness and bit error rate are significantly deteriorated when excited by 280-nm DUV light. Conversely, 28 and 24 Mb/s were attained using CdSe/CdZnS/ZnS QDs under UV and DUV excitation, respectively. Our studies on light-conversion and communication capabilities of green QDs within the DUV OWC system may provide valuable insights for subsequent research in the field.

PURPOSE: To assess whether the integration of PD-1 inhibitor with total neoadjuvant therapy (iTNT) can lead to an improvement in complete responses (CRs) and favors a watch-and-wait (WW) strategy in patients with proficient mismatch repair or microsatellite stable (pMMR/MSS) locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase II trial using a pick-the-winner design. Eligible patients with clinical T3-4 and/or N+ rectal adenocarcinoma were randomly assigned to group A for short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) followed by six cycles of consolidation immunochemotherapy with capecitabine and oxaliplatin and toripalimab or to group B for two cycles of induction immunochemotherapy followed by SCRT and the rest four doses. Either total mesorectal excision or WW was applied on the basis of tumor response. The primary end point was CR which included pathological CR (pCR) after surgery and clinical CR (cCR) if WW was applicable, with hypothesis of an increased CR of 40% after iTNT compared with historical data of 25% after conventional TNT. RESULTS: Of the 130 patients enrolled, 121 pMMR/MSS patients were evaluable (62 in group A and 59 in group B). At a median follow-up of 19 months, CR was achieved at 56.5% in group A and 54.2% in group B. Both groups fulfilled the predefined statistical hypothesis (P < .001). Both groups reported a pCR rate of 50%. Respectively, 15 patients in each group underwent WW and remained disease free. The most frequent grade 3 to 4 toxicities were thrombocytopenia and neutropenia. Patients in group A had higher rate of cCR (43.5% v 35.6%) at restaging and lower rate of grade 3 to 4 thrombocytopenia (24.2% v 33.9%) during neoadjuvant treatment. CONCLUSION: The iTNT regimens remarkably improved CR rates in pMMR/MSS LARC compared with historical benchmark with acceptable toxicity. Up-front SCRT followed by immunochemotherapy was selected for future definitive study.

Methyl viologen (MV), also known as paraquat, is a widely used herbicide but has also been reported as highly toxic to different life forms. The mode of its operation is related to superoxide radical (O2.-) production and consequent oxidative damage. However, besides the damage to key macromolecules, reactive oxygen species (ROS; to which O2.- belongs) are also known as regulators of numerous ion transport systems located at cellular membranes. In this study, we used MV as a tool to probe the role of O2.- in regulating membrane-transport activity and systemic acquired tolerance in halophytic Chenopodium quinoa and glycophytic spinach plants. Both plant species showed growth reduction in terms of reduced shoot length, lower shoot fresh and dry weight, photosynthesis rate, and chlorophyll contents; however, quinoa showed less reduction in growth compared with spinach. This whole plant response was further examined by measuring the ion concentration, gene expression of ion transporters, activation of antioxidants, and osmolyte accumulation. We observed that at the mechanistic level, the differences in growth in response to MV were conferred by at least four complementary physiological mechanisms: (1) higher K+ loss from spinach leaves resulted from higher expression of MV-induced plasma membrane-based depolarization-activated K+ efflux GORK channel, (2) higher activation of high-affinity K+ uptake transporter HAK5 in quinoa, (3) higher antioxidant production and osmolyte accumulation in quinoa as compared with spinach, and (4) maintaining a higher rate of photosynthesis due to higher chlorophyll contents, and efficiency of photosystem II and reduced ROS and MDA contents. Obtained results also showed that MV induced O2.- significantly reduced N contents in both species but with more pronounced effects in glycophytic spinach. Taken together this study has shown the role of O2.- in regulating membrane ion transport and N metabolism in the leaves of halophyte vs. glycophyte in the context of oxidative stress tolerance.

This study successfully prepared an edible packaging film that rapidly dissolves in water by utilizing a combination of κ-carrageenan, carboxymethyl starch, and gum ghatti. We investigated the influence of these three materials on the microstructure and physical properties of the film, as well as the impact of the film's dissolution on the stability of beverages. SEM, FTIR, and XRD analyses revealed that the κ-carrageenan, carboxymethyl starch, and gum ghatti primarily interacted through hydrogen bonding, resulting in a more uniform and dense film structure. Surface hydrophilicity and swelling tests indicated an increased presence of hydrophilic groups in the composite film. The inclusion of carboxymethyl starch and gum ghatti significantly improves the film's physical properties, resulting in a notable reduction in water solubility time, an increase in elongation at break from 19.5 % to 26.0 %, a rise in the contact angle from 49.1° to 67.0°, and a decrease in water vapor permeability from 7.5 × 10-10 to 6.2 × 10-10 g/m·s·Pa. Furthermore, coffee packaging bags made from this composite film dissolved entirely in hot water in just 40 s. Dissolving these bags significantly improved the stability of instant coffee, reducing centrifugal sedimentation from 3.8 % to 1.7 %. This study highlights the substantial potential of the κ-carrageenan/carboxymethyl starch/gum ghatti composite film as a packaging material for solid beverages.

Alphaherpesviruses, categorized as viruses with linear DNA composed of two complementary strands, can potentially to induce diseases in both humans and animals as pathogens. Mature viral particles comprise of a core, capsid, tegument, and envelope. While herpesvirus infection can elicit robust immune and inflammatory reactions in the host, its persistence stems from its prolonged interaction with the host, fostering a diverse array of immunoescape mechanisms. In recent years, significant advancements have been achieved in comprehending the immunoescape tactics employed by alphaherpesviruses, including pseudorabies virus (PRV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), feline herpesvirus (FeHV), equine herpesvirus (EHV), and caprine herpesvirus type I (CpHV-1). Researchers have unveiled the intricate adaptive mechanisms existing between viruses and their natural hosts. This review endeavors to illuminate the research advancements concerning the immunoescape mechanisms of alphaherpesviruses by delineating the pertinent proteins and genes involved in virus immunity. It aims to furnish valuable insights for further research on related mechanisms and vaccine development, ultimately contributing to virus control and containment efforts.

Background: Endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression is widely used in the treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) following head and craniofacial trauma. Intraoperative hemorrhage is a catastrophic surgical complication during optic canal decompression. Case description: We present two cases of patients with TON who suffered unexpected intra-operative massive bleeding during endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression. After intraoperative hemostasis was achieved, emergent cerebral angiograms demonstrated the formation of internal carotid pseudoaneurysms, which were immediately embolized with coils combined with or without Onyx with balloon assistance. One of these cases was also complicated by a postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak, which failed to be treated with lumbar drainage but was successfully repaired with endoscopic transnasal surgery. Conclusion: The intra-operative rupture of ICA pseudoaneurysm is a rare but catastrophic complication in TON patients. Intraoperative massive bleeding indicates rupture of ICA pseudoaneurysm. Postoperative emergency angiography and endovascular therapy should be arranged to evaluate and repair the cerebral vascular injury. Endoscopic trans-nasal surgery repairing CSF leaks resistant to lumbar drainage could be efficient and safe following pseudoaneurysm embolization.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between degeneration of cervical intervertebral disc and degeneration of paravertebral muscles[multifidus (MF), cervical semispinalis (SCer), semispinalis capitis (SCap) and splenius capitis (SPL)]. Methods: 82 patients with chronic neck pain were randomly selected, including 43 males and 39 females, with 50.73 0.7.51 years old. All patients were scanned by 3.0T MRI Philips Ingenia performed conventional MRI sequence scanning and fat measurement sequence mDIXON-Quant scanning of cervical. Fat infiltration (FI) and cross-sectional area (CSA) of cervical paravertebral muscle (MF, SCer, SCap and SPL) at central level of C5-6 disc were measured by Philips 3.0T MRI image post-processing workstation. According to Pfirrmann grading system, there was no grade I in the included cases. The number of grade IIr IV cases were n=16, 40, 19 and 7 respectively. CSA and FI of cervical paravertebral muscles were compared with t test or one-way ANOVA, Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between age, disc degeneration, and CSA, FI of cervical paravertebral muscles, and multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the independent influencing factors of CSA and FI. Results: CSA of cervical paravertebral muscles in male patients was significantly higher than that in female patients (all P<0.001), but there was no significant difference in FI (all P>0.05). Age was weakly correlated with CSA of MF+SCer, moderately correlated with CSA of SCap and SPL (r=-0.256, -0.355 and -0.361, P<0.05), weakly correlated with FI of SCap and SPL (r= 0.182 and 0.264, P<0.001), moderately correlated with FI of MF+SCer (r=0.408, P<0.001). There were significant differences in FI with disc degeneration (P<0.001, P=0.028 and P=0.005). Further correlation analysis showed that disc degeneration was strongly correlated with FI of MF+SCer (r=0.629, P<0.001), and moderately correlated with FI of SCap and SPL (r=0.363, P=0.001; r=0.345, P=0.002). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that sex and age were the influencing factors of CSA of SCap and SPL, sex was the independent influencing factor of CSA of MF+SCer, and disc degeneration was the independent influencing factor of FI. Conclusions: Age is negatively correlated with CSA and positively correlated with FI. Disc degeneration was correlated with FI of paravertebral muscles, especially with FI of MF and SCer. Sex and age were the influencing factors of CSA, while disc degeneration was the independent influencing factor of FI.

BACKGROUND: Multivariate synchronization index (MSI) has been successfully applied for frequency detection in steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, the standard MSI algorithm and its variants cannot simultaneously take full advantage of the time-local structure and the harmonic components in SSVEP signals, which are both crucial for frequency detection performance. To overcome the limitation, we propose a novel filter bank temporally local MSI (FBTMSI) algorithm to further improve SSVEP frequency detection accuracy. The method explicitly utilizes the temporal information of signal for covariance matrix estimation and employs filter bank decomposition to exploits SSVEP-related harmonic components. RESULTS: We employed the cross-validation strategy on the public Benchmark dataset to optimize the parameters and evaluate the performance of the FBTMSI algorithm. Experimental results show that FBTMSI outperforms the standard MSI, temporally local MSI (TMSI) and filter bank driven MSI (FBMSI) algorithms across multiple experimental settings. In the case of data length of one second, the average accuracy of FBTMSI is 9.85% and 3.15% higher than that of the FBMSI and the TMSI, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The promising results demonstrate the effectiveness of the FBTMSI algorithm for frequency recognition and show its potential in SSVEP-based BCI applications.
