Objective To analyze the sensitivity of ARHGAP8 in predicting the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the patients with locally advanced mid-low colorectal cancer and provide accurate evidence for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. Methods The differentially expressed gene ARHGAP8 was screened out by bioinformatics analysis.Cancer tissue and rectal tissue of 68 patients with primary rectal cancer were selected.The rectal cancer tissue samples and the rectal tissue samples were collected for clinical validation of ARHGAP8 expression by quantitative real-time PCR,Western blotting,and immunohistochemistry.The clinical and pathological features such as gender,age,tumor stage,differentiation degree,and pathological type of the patients were collected for functional validation.Forty-four patients with locally advanced mid-low rectal cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy were selected for immunohistochemical examination of ARHGAP8 expression.The expression level of ARHGAP8 was compared between before and after chemotherapy and among different efficacy groups. Results The bioinformatics analysis revealed differences in the expression level of ARHGAP8 between the cancer tissue and rectal tissue (P<0.001).The expression level of ARHGAP8 was correlated with tumor stage (P=0.024),lymph node metastasis (P=0.007),and age (P=0.005).Quantitative real-time PCR results showed that the mRNA level of ARHGAP8 in the cancer tissue was higher than that in the rectal tissue (P<0.001).Western blotting and immunohistochemistry results demonstrated that the protein level of ARHGAP8 in the cancer tissue was higher than that in the rectal tissue (P=0.011).The expression of ARHGAP8 was correlated with tumor size (P=0.010) and pathological stage (P=0.005),while it showed no significant association with tumor differentiation degree,lymph node metastasis,liver metastasis,Ki-67,or microsatellite instability expression level.The 44 patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy included 13,8,8,and 15 patients of tumor regression grades 0,1,2,and 3,respectively.Among them,65.91% (29/44) patients showed responses to the treatment.After neoadjuvant chemotherapy,the expression of ARHGAP8 in the cancer tissue was down-regulated in the patients who responded to the chemotherapy (P<0.001).The response rate in the patients with low protein level of ARHGAP8 was 92.86%,which was higher than that (53.33%) in the patients with high protein level of ARHGAP8 (P=0.033). Conclusion ARHGAP8 is highly expressed in the rectal cancer tissue.The patients with locally advanced mid-low rectal cancer and low ARHGAP8 expression are more sensitive to neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the XELOX protocol.ARHGAP8 can serve as a potential biomarker for the occurrence and development of rectal cancer and an important index for evaluating the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the XELOX protocol in the patients with locally advanced mid-low rectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of using non-mydriatic fundus photography in conjunction with an artificial intelligence (AI) reading platform for large-scale screening of diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: In this study, we selected 120 patients with diabetes hospitalized in our institution from December 2019 to April 2021. Retinal imaging of 240 eyes was obtained using non-mydriatic fundus photography. The fundus images of these patients were divided into two groups based on different interpretation methods. In Experiment Group 1, the images were analyzed and graded for DR diagnosis using an AI reading platform. In Experiment Group 2, the images were analyzed and graded for DR diagnosis by an associate chief physician in ophthalmology, specializing in fundus diseases. Concurrently, all patients underwent the gold standard for DR diagnosis and grading-fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA)-with the outcomes serving as the Control Group. The diagnostic value of the two methods was assessed by comparing the results of Experiment Groups 1 and 2 with those of the Control Group. RESULTS: Keeping the control group (FFA results) as the gold standard, no significant differences were observed between the two experimental groups regarding diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, false positive rate, false negative rate, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, Youden's index, Kappa value, and diagnostic accuracy (X2 = 0.371, P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared with the manual reading group, the AI reading group revealed no significant differences across all diagnostic indicators, exhibiting high sensitivity and specificity, as well as a relatively high positive predictive value. Additionally, it demonstrated a high level of diagnostic consistency with the gold standard. This technology holds potential for suitability in large-scale screening of DR.

Treating kidney diseases from the perspective of spleen is an important clinical method in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for anti-renal fibrosis (RF). Si-jun-zi decoction (SJZD), a classic formula for qi-invigorating and spleen-invigorating, has been reported to alleviate RF. This study aims to investigate the potential mechanism by which SJZD attenuates RF. The results demonstrated notable improvements in renal function levels, inflammation and fibrosis indices in UUO-mice following SJZD intervention. The main active ingredients identified were Quercetin, Kaempferol, Naringenin and 7-Methoxy-2-methyl isoflavone. Furthermore, STAT3, MAPK3, MYC were confirmed as key targets. Additionally, GO enrichment analysis demonstrated that SJZD delayed RF primarily by regulating oxidative stress and other biological mechanisms. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed the involvement of pathways such as Lipid and atherosclerosis signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway and other pathways in the reno-protective effects of SJZD. The molecular docking results revealed that the active ingredients of SJZD were well-bound and stable to the core targets. The experiments results revealed that Quercetin, Kaempferol, and Naringenin not only improved the morphology of TGF-ß-induced HK-2 cells but also reversed the expression of α-SMA, COL1A1 and MAPK, thereby delaying the progression of RF. The anti-RF effects of SJZD were exerted through multi-components, multi-targets and multi-pathways.

Lipid metabolism reprogramming stands as a fundamental hallmark of cancer cells. Unraveling the core regulators of lipid biosynthesis holds the potential to find promising therapeutic targets in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Here, it is demonstrated that platelet-derived growth factor C (PDGFC) orchestrated lipid metabolism, thereby facilitated the malignant progression of PDAC. Expression of PDGFC is upregulated in PDAC cohorts and is corelated with a poor prognosis. Aberrantly high expression of PDGFC promoted proliferation and metastasis of PDAC both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, PDGFC accelerated the malignant progression of PDAC by upregulating fatty acid accumulation through sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), a key transcription factor in lipid metabolism. Remarkably, Betulin, an inhibitor of SREBP1, demonstrated the capability to inhibit proliferation and metastasis of PDAC cell lines, along with attenuating the process of liver metastasis in vivo. Overall, the study underscores the pivotal role of PDGFC-mediated lipid metabolism in PDAC progression, suggesting PDGFC as a potential biomarker for PDAC metastasis. Targeting PDGFC-induced lipid metabolism emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for metastatic PDAC, with the potential to improve clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The current cutoff values of intravaginal ejaculation latency time for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation do not always match clinical practice, and the inconsistency in the cutoff values of intravaginal ejaculation latency time among different definitions has also posed challenges to both clinical management and research of premature ejaculation. OBJECTIVES: To re-evaluate the intravaginal ejaculation latency time and to find evidence-based cut-off values for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation that can be widely accepted and match clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We addressed the flaws of previous studies. Lifelong premature ejaculation was diagnosed based on both patient self-report of premature ejaculation status and scores on the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool, with a control group consisting of non-premature ejaculation individuals included for comparison. Utilizing receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal self-estimated cutoff value for intravaginal ejaculation latency time in diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation was determined. RESULTS: A total of 307 heterosexual participants (mean age = 30.7 ± 6.4) were included, comprising 187 lifelong premature ejaculation patients (mean age = 28.0 ± 4.6) and 120 non-premature ejaculation individuals (mean age = 35.0 ± 6.5). 2.7% of lifelong premature ejaculation patients experienced anteportal ejaculation. 59.9%, 92%, and 97.9% of lifelong premature ejaculation patients displayed intravaginal ejaculation latency times within 1, 2, and 3 min, respectively. The receiver-operating characteristic curve's area under the curve was 0.996 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.991-1.000 (p < 0.0001). The perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time cut-off at 3.5 (sensitivity = 97.9%, specificity = 99.2%) showed the highest Youden index compared with other options. DISCUSSION: Although we found that 92.0% of lifelong premature ejaculation patients had a perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time within 2 min, a perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time cutoff value of less than 3.5 min for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation could encompass a larger proportion (97.9%) of patients seeking medical help for complaints of PE, and increasing the perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time cutoff value to 3.5 min would not significantly increase the false-positive rate. CONCLUSION: The perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time cutoff value for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation within a clinical practice context is 3.5 min.

Hyperuricemia (HUA), or elevated uric acid in the blood, has become more prevalent in recent years. Polyphenols, which are known to have good inhibitory activity on xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), are effective in uric acid reduction. In this review, we address the structure-activity relationship of flavonoids that inhibit XOR activity from two perspectives: the key residues of XOR and the structural properties of flavonoids. Flavonoids' inhibitory effect is enhanced by their hydroxyl, methoxy, and planar structures, whereas glycosylation dramatically reduces their activity. The flavonoid structure-activity relationship informed subsequent discussions of the changes that occur in polyphenols' XOR inhibitory activity during their extraction, processing, gastrointestinal digestion, absorption, and interactions. Furthermore, gastrointestinal digestion and heat treatment during processing can boost the inhibition of XOR. Polyphenols with comparable structures may have a synergistic effect, and their synergy with allopurinol thus provides a promising future research direction.

Translational control plays a crucial role in the regulation of apoptosis, with the EIF4 family serving as one of the mRNA translation factors that modulate the process of mRNA translation based on mRNA characteristics. To address this potential causal role of EIF4 family proteins and breast cancer, Mendelian randomization was employed. The study incorporated four sets of genetics instrumental variables, namely EIF4E, EIF4B, EIF4A, and EIF4EBP2. The outcome variables selected for analysis were the BCAC consortium, which included estrogen receptor positive (ER+) and estrogen receptor negative (ER-) samples. To assess the potential violations of the MR assumption, the primary MR analysis employed inverse variance weighted (IVW), and several sensitivity analyses were conducted. The findings of the two-sample MR analysis indicate that EIF4E has an adverse effect on breast cancer risk (p = 0.028). However, the evidence for the relationship between EIF4E and ER status of breast cancer suggests a weak association with ER+ breast cancer (p = 0.054), but not with ER- breast cancer (p > 0.05). The study findings indicate that EIF4A is not causally linked to the risk of ER+ breast cancer, but is significantly associated with an elevated risk of ER- breast cancer (p = 0.028). However, the evidence is inadequate to support the effects of EIF4B and EIF4EBP2 on breast cancer (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that EIF4 may be a potential factor in the occurrence and development of breast cancer, which may lead to a better understanding of its causes and prevention.

This study investigated the effects of varying lipid ratios on the anaerobic co-digestion of high-lipid food waste (FW) in a mesophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). At a lipid concentration of 5 %, optimal biogas production (3.84 L/L/d) and lipid removal efficiency (78 %) were achieved; however, increasing lipid concentrations resulted in significant accumulations of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Batch tests further demonstrated the impact of various types of LCFAs, with stearic acid showing the slowest microbial growth rate (0.033d-1), confirming its role in the accumulation of acetate-dominated VFAs, potentially limiting the methanogenesis process at elevated lipid levels. Furthermore, at 8 % lipid content, the downregulation of key LCFA degradation enzymes and dominance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens indicated adverse conditions. The importance of the intricate interplay between LCFA degradation kinetics and microbial community for the system efficiency was evidenced, offering insights for optimizing and managing high-lipidic wastes.

Excess fluoride in aqueous solutions can significantly affect dental and bone health. This study used two methods to prepare hydroxyapatite to remove fluoride ions from water. The experiments showed that the adsorption capacity and removal rate of hydroxyapatite (Xq-HAP) prepared by the novel method were higher than for the hydroxyapatite (Yt-HAP) prepared by the conventional method. The maximum fluoride ion trapping capacity of Xq-HAP could reach 29.04 mg g-1 under the conditions of pH = 5 and an F ion concentration of 10 mg L-1. The materials were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, XPS, and FTIR. An investigation was conducted to examine the impact of contact time, adsorbent dosage, fluoride concentration, solution pH, temperature, and several other parameters on the removal of fluoride. Adsorption equilibrium was reached in approximately 3 h at an initial fluoride concentration of 10 mg L-1. It can be seen that the adsorbent has a faster ability to trap fluoride ions. The adsorption kinetics and Langmuir isotherm indicated that fluoride ion adsorption is a monolayer chemisorption process. Further characterization and kinetic studies indicated that the removal mechanism involves ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, and complexation. After five adsorption cycles, the adsorption capacity reaches 23 mg g-1.

BACKGROUND: There is no diagnostic assessment procedure with moderate or strong evidence of use, and evidence for current means of treating prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDOC) is sparse. This may be related to the fact that the mechanisms of pDOC have not been studied deeply enough and are not clear enough. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the mechanism of pDOC using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to provide a basis for the treatment of pDOC, as well as to explore preclinical markers for determining the arousal of pDOC patients. METHODS: Five minutes resting-state data were collected from 10 pDOC patients and 13healthy adults using fNIRS. Based on the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR) in the time series, the resting-state cortical brain functional connectivity strengths of the two groups were calculated, and the functional connectivity strengths of homologous and heterologous brain networks were compared at the sensorimotor network (SEN), dorsal attention network (DAN), ventral attention network (VAN), default mode network (DMN), frontoparietal network (FPN), and visual network (VIS) levels. Univariate binary logistic regression analyses were performed on brain networks with statistically significant differences to identify brain networks associated with arousal in pDOC patients. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were further analyzed to determine the cut-off value of the relevant brain networks to provide clinical biomarkers for the prediction of arousal in pDOC patients. RESULTS: The results showed that the functional connectivity strengths of oxyhemoglobin (HbO)-based SEN∼SEN, VIS∼VIS, DAN∼DAN, DMN∼DMN, SEN∼VIS, SEN∼FPN, SEN∼DAN, SEN∼DMN, VIS∼FPN, VIS∼DAN, VIS∼DMN, HbR-based SEN∼SEN, and SEN∼DAN were significantly reduced in the pDOC group and were factors that could reflect the participants' state of consciousness. The cut-off value of resting-state functional connectivity strength calculated by ROC curve analysis can be used as a potential preclinical marker for predicting the arousal state of subjects. CONCLUSION: Resting-state functional connectivity strength of cortical networks is significantly reduced in pDOC patients. The cut-off values of resting-state functional connectivity strength are potential preclinical markers for predicting arousal in pDOC patients.

The efficacy of berberine in managing diabetes through modulation of gut microbiome has been established through fecal sample analyses. However, relying solely on fecal materials constrains our comprehension of berberine's effects on diverse gastrointestinal locations. This study specifically explores the ileocecal region, a segment characterized by higher microbial diversity than fecal samples. Berberine exhibits a robust hypoglycemic impact by significantly reducing glucose levels in blood and urine. Beyond glycemic control, berberine ameliorates various diabetes-related symptoms in serum, including increased insulin and leptin, but decreased NEFA and MDA. Notably, berberine demonstrates liver-protective functions by alleviating oxidative stress and enhancing hepatic glycogen abundance. These outcomes prompted a high-throughput sequencing analysis of the ileocecal microbiome, revealing an augmentation of beneficial bacterial genera (four genera in the Lachnospiraceae family, Erysipelatoclostridium, and Escherichia-Shigella), along with a reduction in harmful bacterial genera (Romboutsia). Additionally, we predicted the impact of the ileocecal microbiome on clinically relevant factors associated with diabetes. These findings elucidate the multi-pathway mechanisms of berberine in treating T2D, underscoring its potential as a natural anti-diabetic agent or functional food, particularly through the modulation of the gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disorder with varied clinical courses and prognoses, not only did the patients suffer from physical impairment, but also various physical and psychiatric comorbidities. Growing evidence have suggested that mental disorders in SLE patients, can lead to various adverse consequences. AIM: To explored the features and influencing factors of mental health in patients with SLE and clarifying the correlations between mental health and personality characteristics and perceived social support. The results would provide a basis for psychological intervention in patients with SLE. METHODS: The clinical data of 168 patients with SLE admitted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University between June 2020 and June 2022 were collected. Psychological assessment and correlation analysis were conducted using the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and Perceived Social Support Scale, and the collected data were compared with the national norms in China. The relevant factors influencing mental health were identified by statistical analysis. A general information questionnaire, the Revised Life Orientation Test, and Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey were employed to assess optimism level and quality of life (QoL), respectively. RESULTS: Patients with SLE obtained higher scores for the somatization, depression, anxiety, and phobic anxiety subscales than national norms (P < 0.05). A correlation was identified between total social support and total SCL-90 score or each subscale (P < 0.05). The factors significantly affecting patients' mental health were hormone dosage and disease activity index (DAI) (P < 0.05). The average optimism score of patients with SLE was 14.36 ± 4.42, and 30 cases were in the middle and lower levels. A positive correlation was found between optimism level and QoL scores. CONCLUSION: Patients with SLE develop psychological disorders at varying degrees, which are significantly influenced by hormone dosage and DAI. Patients' mental health should be closely monitored during clinical diagnosis and treatment and provided adequate support in establishing positive, healthy thinking and behavior patterns and improving their optimism level and QoL.

Background: Currently, manual measurement of lumbosacral radiological parameters is time-consuming and laborious, and inevitably produces considerable variability. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning-based model for automatically measuring lumbosacral radiographic parameters on lateral lumbar radiographs. Methods: We retrospectively collected 1,240 lateral lumbar radiographs to train the model. The included images were randomly divided into training, validation, and test sets in a ratio of approximately 8:1:1 for model training, fine-tuning, and performance evaluation, respectively. The parameters measured in this study were lumbar lordosis (LL), sacral horizontal angle (SHA), intervertebral space angle (ISA) at L4-L5 and L5-S1 segments, and the percentage of lumbar spondylolisthesis (PLS) at L4-L5 and L5-S1 segments. The model identified key points using image segmentation results and calculated measurements. The average results of key points annotated by the three spine surgeons were used as the reference standard. The model's performance was evaluated using the percentage of correct key points (PCK), intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), Pearson correlation coefficient (r), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and box plots. Results: The model's mean differences from the reference standard for LL, SHA, ISA (L4-L5), ISA (L5-S1), PLS (L4-L5), and PLS (L5-S1) were 1.69°, 1.36°, 1.55°, 1.90°, 1.60%, and 2.43%, respectively. When compared with the reference standard, the measurements of the model had better correlation and consistency (LL, SHA, and ISA: ICC = 0.91-0.97, r = 0.91-0.96, MAE = 1.89-2.47, RMSE = 2.32-3.12; PLS: ICC = 0.90-0.92, r = 0.90-0.91, MAE = 1.95-2.93, RMSE = 2.52-3.70), and the differences between them were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The model developed in this study could correctly identify key vertebral points on lateral lumbar radiographs and automatically calculate lumbosacral radiographic parameters. The measurement results of the model had good consistency and reliability compared to manual measurements. Loess is widely distributed in the northwest and other regions, and its unique structural forms such as large pores and strong water sensitivity lead to its collapsibility and collapse, which can easily induce slope instability. Guar gum and basalt fiber are natural green materials. For these reasons, this study investigated the solidification of loess by combining guar gum and basalt fiber and analyzed the impact of the guar gum content, fiber length, and fiber content on the soil shearing strength. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the microstructure of loess was examined, revealing the synergistic solidification mechanism of guar gum and basalt fibers. On this basis, a shear strength model was established through regression analysis with fiber length, guar gum content, and fiber content. The results indicate that adding guar gum and basalt fiber increases soil cohesion, as do fiber length, guar gum content, and fiber content. When the fiber length was 12 mm, the fiber content was 1.00%, and the guar gum content was equal to 0.50%, 0.75%, or 1.00%, the peak strength of the solidified loess increased by 82.80%, 85.90%, and 90.40%, respectively. According to the shear strength model, the predicted and test data of the shear strength of solidified loess are evenly distributed on both sides of parallel lines, indicating a good fit. These findings are theoretically significant and provide practical guidance for loess solidification engineering.

Loess has the characteristics of loose, large pore ratio, and strong water sensitivity. Once it encounters water, its structure is damaged easily and its strength is degraded, causing a degree of subgrade settlement. The water sensitivity of loess can be evaluated by permeability and disintegration tests. This study analyzes the effects of guar gum content, basalt fiber content, and basalt fiber length on the permeability and disintegration characteristics of solidified loess. The microstructure of loess was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) testing, revealing the synergistic solidification mechanism of guar gum and basalt fibers. A permeability model was established through regression analysis with guar gum content, confining pressure, basalt fiber content, and length. The research results indicate that the addition of guar gum reduces the permeability of solidified loess, the addition of fiber improves the overall strength, and the addition of guar gum and basalt fiber improves the disintegration resistance. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the permeability coefficient and disintegration rate of solidified soil are reduced by 50.50% and 94.10%, respectively. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the basalt fiber length is 12 mm, and the fiber content is 1.00%, the permeability of the solidified soil decreases by 31.9%, and the disintegration rate is 4.80%. The permeability model has a good fitting effect and is suitable for predicting the permeability of loess reinforced with guar gum and basalt fiber composite. This research is of vital theoretical worth and great scientific significance for guidelines on practicing loess solidification engineering.

Gemcitabine resistance is a major obstacle to the effectiveness of chemotherapy in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Therefore, new strategies are needed to sensitize cancer cells to gemcitabine. Here, we constructed gemcitabine-resistant PDAC cells and analyzed them with RNA-sequence. Employing an integrated approach involving bioinformatic analyses from multiple databases, TGFB2 is identified as a crucial gene in gemcitabine-resistant PDAC and is significantly associated with poor gemcitabine therapeutic response. The patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model further substantiates the gradual upregulation of TGFB2 expression during gemcitabine-induced resistance. Silencing TGFB2 expression can enhance the chemosensitivity of gemcitabine against PDAC. Mechanistically, TGFB2, post-transcriptionally stabilized by METTL14-mediated m6A modification, can promote lipid accumulation and the enhanced triglyceride accumulation drives gemcitabine resistance by lipidomic profiling. TGFB2 upregulates the lipogenesis regulator sterol regulatory element binding factor 1 (SREBF1) and its downstream lipogenic enzymes via PI3K-AKT signaling. Moreover, SREBF1 is responsible for TGFB2-mediated lipogenesis to promote gemcitabine resistance in PDAC. Importantly, TGFB2 inhibitor imperatorin combined with gemcitabine shows synergistic effects in gemcitabine-resistant PDAC PDX model. This study sheds new light on an avenue to mitigate PDAC gemcitabine resistance by targeting TGFB2 and lipid metabolism and develops the potential of imperatorin as a promising chemosensitizer in clinical translation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influencing factors and reference ranges for thyroid function in preterm infants at the age of 7 days, with the aim of avoiding unnecessary clinical reexamination and intervention. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the data of 685 preterm infants from January 2020 to January 2023. According to gestational age and birth weight, they were divided into a high-risk group (gestational age <34 weeks or birth weight<2 000 g; 228 infants) and a low-risk group (gestational age ≥34 weeks and birth weight ≥2 000 g;457 infants). The influencing factors for thyroid function were analyzed, and 95% reference range was calculated. RESULTS: Gestational age, birth weight, birth season, sex, and assisted reproduction were the influencing factors for thyroid function (P<0.05). For the preterm infants in the high-risk group, the reference ranges of free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3), total thyroxine (TT4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were 2.79-5.40 pmol/L, 8.80-25.64 pmol/L, 0.80-2.15 nmol/L, 50.06-165.09 nmol/L, and 0.80-18.57 µIU/mL, respectively. For those in the low-risk group, the reference ranges of these indicators were 3.08-5.93 pmol/L, 11.17-26.24 pmol/L, 1.02-2.27 nmol/L, 62.90-168.95 nmol/L, and 0.69-13.70 µIU/mL, respectively. FT3, FT4, TT3, and TT4 were positively correlated with gestational age (P<0.05); FT3, FT4, TT3, and TT4 were positively correlated with birth weight (P<0.05); TSH was negatively correlated with birth weight (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Thyroid function in preterm infants at the age of 7 days is affected by the factors such as gestational age and birth weight, and the reference ranges of thyroid function in preterm infants at the age of 7 days should be established based on gestational age and birth weight.

Iridocyclitis and the use of glucocorticoid medication have been widely studied as susceptibility factors for cataracts. However, the causal relationship between them remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between the development of iridocyclitis and the genetic liability of glucocorticoid medication use on the risk of senile cataracts occurrence by performing Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. Instrumental variables (IVs) significantly associated with exposure factors (P < 5 × 10-8) were identified using published genome-wide association data from the FinnGen database and UK Biobank. Reliability analyses were conducted using five approaches, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger regression, simple median, weighted median, and weighted mode. A sensitivity analysis using the leave-one-out method was also performed. Genetic susceptibility to glucocorticoid use was associated with an increased risk of developing senile cataracts (OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.02-1.17; P < 0.05). Moreover, iridocyclitis was significantly associated with a higher risk of developing senile cataracts (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.05; P < 0.05). Nonetheless, some heterogeneity in the IVs was observed, but the MR results remained consistent after penalizing for outliers. The estimates were consistent in multivariate analyses by adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM). This study provides new insights into the prevention and management of senile cataracts by highlighting the increased risk associated with iridocyclitis and the use of glucocorticoids.

Background: Surgical robots are gaining increasing popularity because of their capability to improve the precision of pedicle screw placement. However, current surgical robots rely on unimodal computed tomography (CT) images as baseline images, limiting their visualization to vertebral bone structures and excluding soft tissue structures such as intervertebral discs and nerves. This inherent limitation significantly restricts the applicability of surgical robots. To address this issue and further enhance the safety and accuracy of robot-assisted pedicle screw placement, this study will develop a software system for surgical robots based on multimodal image fusion. Such a system can extend the application range of surgical robots, such as surgical channel establishment, nerve decompression, and other related operations. Methods: Initially, imaging data of the patients included in the study are collected. Professional workstations are employed to establish, train, validate, and optimize algorithms for vertebral bone segmentation in CT and magnetic resonance (MR) images, intervertebral disc segmentation in MR images, nerve segmentation in MR images, and registration fusion of CT and MR images. Subsequently, a spine application model containing independent modules for vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and nerves is constructed, and a software system for surgical robots based on multimodal image fusion is designed. Finally, the software system is clinically validated. Discussion: We will develop a software system based on multimodal image fusion for surgical robots, which can be applied to surgical access establishment, nerve decompression, and other operations not only for robot-assisted nail placement. The development of this software system is important. First, it can improve the accuracy of pedicle screw placement, percutaneous vertebroplasty, percutaneous kyphoplasty, and other surgeries. Second, it can reduce the number of fluoroscopies, shorten the operation time, and reduce surgical complications. In addition, it would be helpful to expand the application range of surgical robots by providing key imaging data for surgical robots to realize surgical channel establishment, nerve decompression, and other operations.

Two novel lanthanide mercury materials, [Gd(IA)3(H3O)2Hg3Br6]n·2nCl (1) and [La(IA)3(H3O)2Hg3Br6]n·2nCl (2) (IA = isonicotinic anion), have been prepared under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. They are isomorphic and characterized by a three-dimensional (3-D) framework structure. The lanthanide ions are bound by eight oxygen atoms to exhibit a square antiprismatic geometry. The solid-state photoluminescence experiment discovers that compound 1 shows a strong emission in the red region. Compound 1 possesses CIE (Commission Internationale de I'Éclairage) chromaticity coordinates of 0.7347 and 0.2653. Its CCT (correlated color temperature) is 6514 K. Compound 2 displays yellow photoluminescence and it has CIE chromaticity coordinates of 0.4411 and 0.5151. The CCT of compound 2 is 3633 K. Solid-state UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectra revealed that their semiconductor band gaps are 2.16 eV and 2.85 eV, respectively.
