Alginate hydrogel is broadly known for its potential as an encapsulation agent due to its compatibility and versatility. Despite its predominance, alginate hydrogel naturally has macropores and a less rigid structure, which leads to syneresis and uncontrolled diffusion of bioactive compounds from the gel network. Combining alginate with other biopolymers has been considered to improve its properties as an encapsulation agent. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of Crystalline Nanocellulose (CNC) to the physical properties and the diffusion of gallic acid (GA), as a water-soluble polyphenol model, through the alginate-CNC composite hydrogels performed as an encapsulation agent. The hydrogel mixtures were made from 1:0, 1:1, 2:0, 2:1, 2:2, and 2:3 solid-basis ratio of sodium alginate:crystalline nanocellulose and evaluated for syneresis, gel strength and stiffness, rehydration properties and gel porosity. Alginate-CNC and GA interaction was observed through zeta-potential analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Results showed that composite hydrogel with the highest proportion of CNC increased the gel rehydration capacity (87.33 %), gel strength and stiffness as well as reduced the gel syneresis (14.72 %) and dried gel porosity (0.62). GA pre-loaded gel with 2:2 and 2:3 S-C ratios reduced the diffusion of gallic acid by 92.07-92.27 %. FTIR showed hydrogen bonding between GA and the alginate-CNC hydrogel. Alginate-CNC hydrogel had a fibrous and compact structure as shown in the cryo-SEM and confocal microscope images.

Fresh ginger can spoil quickly owing to a variety of factors, including inappropriate postharvest handling, microbial and enzymatic activities, and chemical reactions during storage. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of ginger coated with chitosan and beeswax during storage for 6 months at different temperatures (18°C and 25°C). Fresh ginger was treated with chitosan coating (1.5 and 3.5%), followed by beeswax coating (3 and 6%). The coated ginger was wrapped in a plastic net and stored at ambient (25°C) and low temperatures (18°C) for six months. The results confirmed that coating treatment slowed down the changes in physicochemical properties (moisture, phenolic content, and so on) of ginger during storage. Ginger stored at 25°C showed shorter shelf lives than those stored at 18°C. Coating ginger with 3% chitosan followed by 6% beeswax exhibited the best results in maintaining the moisture and phenolic content, reducing weight loss, and increasing total soluble solid (TSS) and cell compartment size for six months of storage. This study provides a promising approach to delaying the spoilage of fresh ginger by applying coating treatments useful for developing handling protocols for fresh ginger during storage and distribution.

Extemporaneous preparations are still widely prescribed for pediatric patients with special treatments of certain doses and/or combinations of drugs. Several problems related to extemporaneous preparations have been linked to the incidence of adverse events or a lack of therapeutic effectiveness. Developing nations are facing the challenges of compounding practices. The prevalence of compounded medication in developing nations must be explored to determine the urgency of compounding practices. Furthermore, the risks and challenges are described and explained through investigation and collection of numerous scientific articles from reputable databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Pediatric patients need compounded medication related to the appropriate dosage form and dosage adjustment. Notably, it is important to observe extemporaneous preparations in order to provide patient-oriented medication.
