RÉSUMÉ

Yeast flocculation and viability are critical factors in beer production. Adequate flocculation of yeast at the end of fermentation helps to reduce off-flavors and cell separation, while high viability is beneficial for yeast reuse. In this study, we used comparative genomics to analyze the genome information on Saccharomyces pastorianus W01, and its spontaneous mutant W02 with appropriate weakened flocculation ability (better off-flavor reduction performance) and unwanted decreased viability, to investigate the effect of different gene expressions on yeast flocculation or/and viability. Our results indicate that knockout of CNE1, CIN5, SIN3, HP-3, YPR170W-B, and SCEPF1_0274000100 and overexpression of CNE1 and ALD2 significantly decreased the flocculation ability of W01, while knockout of EPL1 increased the flocculation ability of W01. Meanwhile, knockout of CIN5, YPR170W-B, OST5, SFT1, SCEPF1_0274000100, and EPL1 and overexpression of SWC3, ALD2, and HP-2 decreased the viability of W01. CIN5, EPL1, SCEPF1_0274000100, ALD2, and YPR170W-B have all been shown to affect yeast flocculation ability and viability.

RÉSUMÉ

Regulation of the exciton generation, diffusion, and carrier transport, as well as optimization of the non-radiative energy loss could further overcome the power conversion efficiency limitation of organic solar cells. However, the relationship between exciton properties and non-radiative energy loss has seldom been investigated. Herein, taking D18-series devices as the research model, the exciton diffusion length (LD) and hole transfer dynamics can be remarkably improved by the variation of electron-withdrawing halogen and the non-radiative energy loss simultaneously can be suppressed. By combining the analysis results of hole transfer, exciton diffusion, charge separation, and recombination, this work demonstrates that the photo-induced exciton in the chlorinated polymer donor can diffuse to a longer distance within the effective exciton lifetime, suppress the exciton recombination, and enhance device performance. The results define the relationship between the exciton behaviors and non-radiative energy loss and further reveal the significance of controlling the bulk heterojunction with superior photo-physical properties.

RÉSUMÉ

Aiming at the problems that most of the existing electromagnetic metasurfaces have single function and narrow application scope, a highly integrated lightning-type metasurface is proposed in this study. It can realize the functions of circular dichroism (CD), absorption of electromagnetic waves, broadband x-to-y cross polarization conversion (CPC) function, linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LTC-PC) function and asymmetric transmission (AT), and its functions are also analyzed and verified. The designed metasurface consists of the bottom grating structure, the lower SiO2, the middle lightning-type graphene, the upper SiO2, the top graphene and photosensitive silicon. Through numerical calculations, the CD of design can reach more than 85% at 4.22 THz. The function of bimodal absorption is achieved at 4.09 and 8.69 THz. At 7.41∼8.21 THz, the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) of the metasurface reaches more than 99%. Simultaneously, the function of LTC-PC can be formed when PCR is 50%. Finally, when the designed metasurface is in the transmissive state, the AT of design is close to 60% at 7.84 THz. This design provides a new design idea and method for biomedical detection, image processing, modulators, smart switches, optical diodes and other fields.

RÉSUMÉ

The prophylactic application of synthetic insecticides to manage Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagrall) has resulted in insecticide resistance and negative impacts upon natural ecosystems. This has driven the need for developing alternative pest control strategies. In the present study, we investigated the synergistic interaction between the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana and the insecticide emamectin benzoate on M. usitatus. The results of our research exhibited that higher doses of emamectin benzoate inhibited the germination rate and colony growth of B. bassiana. The percentage of M. usitatus mortality following B. bassiana and emamectin benzoate treatment indicated a dose-mortality effect. All concentrations of emamectin benzoate combined with different concentrations of B. bassiana demonstrated a synergistic effect five days post-treatment. When B. bassiana and emamectin benzoate were applied alone or in combination, antioxidant enzyme activities, including acetylcholinesterase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase, were significantly lower in M. usiatus than in the controls at the end of the experimental period. The findings of our study confirm the synergistic effect of B. bassiana and emamectin benzoate on M. usitatus, as well as the biochemical process that might be involved in the regulation of the synergistic effect.

RÉSUMÉ

Studies on microorganism response spaceflight date back to 1960. However, nothing conclusive is known concerning the effects of spaceflight on virulence and environmental tolerance of entomopathogenic fungi; thus, this area of research remains open to further exploration. In this study, the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (strain SB010) was exposed to spaceflight (ChangZheng 5 space shuttle during 5 May 2020 to 8 May 2020) as a part of the Key Research and Development Program of Guangdong Province, China, in collaboration with the China Space Program. The study revealed significant differences between the secondary metabolite profiles of the wild isolate (SB010) and the spaceflight-exposed isolate (BHT021, BH030, BHT098) of B. bassiana. Some of the secondary metabolites/toxins, including enniatin A2, brevianamide F, macrosporin, aphidicolin, and diacetoxyscirpenol, were only produced by the spaceflight-exposed isolate (BHT021, BHT030). The study revealed increased insecticidal activities for of crude protein extracts of B. bassiana spaceflight mutants (BHT021 and BH030, respectively) against Megalurothrips usitatus 5 days post application when compared crude protein extracts of the wild isolate (SB010). The data obtained support the idea of using space mutation as a tool for development/screening of fungal strains producing higher quantities of secondary metabolites, ultimately leading to increased toxicity/virulence against the target insect host.

RÉSUMÉ

The chiroptical response of the chiral metasurface can be characterized by circular dichroism, which is defined as the absorption difference between left-handed circularly polarized incidence and right-handed circularly incidence. It can be applied in biology, chemistry, optoelectronics, etc. Here, we propose a dynamically tunable chiral metasurface structure, which is composed of two metal split-ring resonators and a graphene layer embedded in dielectric. The structure reflects right-handed circularly polarized waves and absorbs left-handed circularly polarized waves under normal incidence. The overall unit structural parameters of the chiral metasurface were discussed and analyzed, and the circular dichroism was 0.85 at 1.181 THz. Additionally, the digital imaging function can be realized based on the chiral metasurface structure, and the resolution of terahertz digital imaging can be dynamically tuned by changing the Fermi level of graphene. The proposed structure has potential applications in realizing tunable dynamic imaging and other communication fields.

RÉSUMÉ

In this study, cost-effective substrates such as cassava starch, corn steep liquor (CSL) and soybean meal hydrolysate (SMH) were used for pullulan production by Aureobasidium pullulans CCTCC M 2012259. The medium was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches, and analysis of variance indicated that the ANN model achieved higher prediction accuracy. The optimal medium predicted by ANN was used to produce high molecular weight pullulan in high yield. SMH substrates increased both biomass and pullulan titer, while CSL substrates maintained higher pullulan molecular weight. Results of kinetic parameters, key enzyme activities and intracellular uridine diphosphate glucose contents revealed the physiological mechanism of changes in pullulan titer and molecular weight using different substrates. Economic analysis of batch pullulan production using different substrates was performed, and the cost of nutrimental materials for CSL and SMH substrates was decreased by 46.1% and 49.9%, respectively, compared to the control using glucose and yeast extract as substrates, which could improve the competitiveness of pullulan against other polysaccharides in industrial applications.

RÉSUMÉ

The energy difference between a singlet exciton and twice of a triplet exciton, ΔESF, provides the thermodynamic driving force for singlet exciton fission (SF). This work reports a systematic investigation on the effect of ΔESF on SF efficiency of five heteroacenes in their solutions. The low-temperature, near-infrared phosphorescence spectra gave the energy levels of the triplet excitons, allowing us to identify the values of ΔESF, which are -0.58, -0.34, -0.31, -0.32, and -0.34 eV for the thiophene, benzene, pyridine, and two tetrafluorobenzene terminated molecules, respectively. Corresponding SF efficiencies of the five heteroacenes in 0.02 M solutions were determined via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to be 117%, 124%, 140%, 132%, and 135%, respectively. This result reveals that higher ΔESF is not, as commonly expected, always beneficial for higher SF efficiency in solution phase. On the contrary, excessive exoergicity results in reduction of SF efficiency in the heteroacenes due to the promotion of other competitive exciton relaxation pathways. Therefore, it is important to optimize thermodynamic driving force when designing organic materials for high SF efficiency.

RÉSUMÉ

Two molecules containing a central diketopyrrolopyrrole and two oligothiophene units have been designed and synthesized. Comparisons between the molecules containing terminal F (FDPP) and Cl (CDPP) atoms allowed us to evaluate the effects of halogenation on the photovoltaic properties of the small molecule organic solar cells (OSCs). The OSCs devices employing FDPP:PC71BM films showed power conversion efficiencies up to 4.32%, suggesting that fluorination is an efficient method for constructing small molecules for OSCs.
