RÉSUMÉ

The removal of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and bacteria from aquaculture wastewater holds paramount ecological and production significance. In this study, Pt/RuO2/g-C3N4 photocatalysts were prepared by depositing Pt and RuO2 particles onto g-C3N4. The physicochemical properties of photocatalysts were explored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometer (UV-vis DRS). The photocatalysts were then applied to the removal of both NH4+-N and bacteria from simulated mariculture wastewater. The results clarified that the removals of both NH4+-N and bacteria were in the sequence of g-C3N4 < RuO2/g-C3N4 < Pt/g-C3N4 < Pt/RuO2/g-C3N4. This magnificent photocatalytic ability of Pt/RuO2/g-C3N4 can be interpreted by the transfer of holes from g-C3N4 to RuO2 to facilitate the in situ generation of HClO from Cl- in wastewater, while Pt extracts photogenerated electrons for H2 formation to enhance the reaction. The removal of NH4+-N and disinfection effect were more pronounced in simulated seawater than in pure water. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N increases with an increase in pH of wastewater, while the bactericidal effect was more significant under a lower pH in a pH range of 6-9. In actual seawater aquaculture wastewater, Pt/RuO2/g-C3N4 still exhibits effective removal efficiency of NH4+-N and bactericidal performance under sunlight. This study provides an alternative avenue for removement of NH4+-N and bacteria from saline waters under sunlight.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Radical resection of colon cancer under general anesthesia is one of the main treatment methods for this malignancy. However, due to the physiological characteristics of elderly patients, the safety of perioperative anesthesia needs special attention. As an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, dexmedetomidine (Dex) has attracted much attention from anesthesiologists due to its stabilizing effect on heart rate and blood pressure, inhibitory effect on inflammation, and sedative and analgesic effects. Its application in general anesthesia may have a positive impact on the quality of anesthesia and postoperative recovery in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of colon cancer. AIM: To investigate the anesthetic effects of Dex during radical surgery for colon cancer under general anesthesia in elderly patients. METHODS: A total of 165 colon cancer patients who underwent radical surgery for colon cancer under general anesthesia at Qingdao University Affiliated Haici Hospital, Qingdao, China were recruited and divided into two groups: A and B. In group A, Dex was administered 30 min before surgery, while group B received an equivalent amount of normal saline. The hemodynamic changes, pulmonary compliance, airway pressure, inflammatory factors, confusion assessment method scores, Ramsay Sedation-Agitation Scale scores, and cellular immune function indicators were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Group A showed less intraoperative hemodynamic fluctuations, better pulmonary compliance, and lower airway resistance compared with group B. Twelve hours after the surgery, the serum levels of TLR-2, TLR-4, IL-6, and TNF-α in group A were significantly lower than those of group B (P < 0.05). After extubation, the Ramsay Sedation-Agitation Scale score of group A patients was significantly higher than that of group B patients, indicating a higher level of sedation. The incidence of delirium was significantly lower in group A than in group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The use of Dex as an adjunct to general anesthesia for radical surgery in elderly patients with colon cancer results in better effectiveness of anesthesia.

RÉSUMÉ

Elevated concentrations of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds are frequently observed in the marine atmosphere but are often significantly underestimated by atmospheric models. To evaluate the potential impact of marine sources on atmospheric formaldehyde, high-resolution measurements were conducted at a coastal site (∼15 m from the sea) during the summer in Qingdao, China. Observed formaldehyde levels averaged 2.4 ± 0.9 ppbv (1 ppbv = 10-9 L L-1), with peaks reaching 6.8 ppbv. Backward trajectories indicate that formaldehyde concentrations remained high in marine air masses. Formaldehyde exhibited weak correlations with primary pollutants such as NO and CO but showed strong correlations with marine tracers, notably methyl ethyl ketone and 1-butene. Chamber experiments confirmed that the photodecomposition of Enteromorpha released large amounts of formaldehyde and marine tracer species. When normalized to acetylene, the levels of formaldehyde, 1-butene, and MEK increased by factors of 3.8, 8.1, and 3.5, respectively. Results from an observation-based chemical box model simulation, which utilizes the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM), revealed that formaldehyde contributes 56% to the primary source of HO2 radicals, while neglecting formaldehyde chemistry would lead to a 15% reduction in coastal ozone production rates. This study interlinks oceanic biology and atmospheric chemistry, advancing the understanding of the ocean's role as a significant source of organic compounds and its contribution to carbon cycling.

RÉSUMÉ

This research reports a case of histological transformation from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to transformed small cell lung cancer (T-SCLC) in a patient undergoing EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The aggressive characteristics of the tumor diverged significantly from those commonly associated with lung adenocarcinomas, leading to further histological analysis. The subsequent histological examination confirmed the transformation to SCLC, consistent with established mechanisms of acquired resistance in NSCLC. Given the limited therapeutic options, the patient was administered a serplulimab-based immunochemotherapy regimen, achieving a progression-free survival (PFS) of 6 months post-transformation. The study underscores the potential of PD-1 inhibitors, particularly serplulimab, in the treatment landscape for T-SCLC and highlights the need for future comprehensive research.

RÉSUMÉ

Background: Unintentional falls are known to be a leading cause of injury mortality among older Chinese adults, yet we lack data on the most recent trends in related mortality. To address this, we used the latest nationally representative data from China to examine trends in elderly unintentional fall mortality by place (urban/rural), sex (men/women), and age group (65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and ≥85 years) from 2010 to 2021. Methods: We retrieved mortality data from the Chinese Health Statistical Yearbook (2010-21) and population data from the Chinese Population Census (2010, 2020). Using line graphs, we examined mortality trends over time. We fitted a joinpoint regression model to detect periods experiencing significant changes and calculated the average and specific annual percentage change of mortality rates to quantify significant changes in the mortality of the elderly due to unintentional falls. Results: Between 2010 and 2021, the age-standardised mortality rate from unintentional falls increased from 45.7 to 67.8 per 100 000 population among Chinese adults aged 65 years and older. Subgroup analyses by sex and place showed similar changing patterns to the overall mortality trends. The joinpoint regression identified certain recent periods that saw significant increases in mortality among adults aged 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80-84 years. During the study period, men and individuals living in rural areas generally had higher unintentional fall mortality rates than women and people living in urban areas (mortality rate ratios: 1.09-1.21 for men vs. women and 1.01-1.27 for rural areas vs. urban areas). Notably, the differences between urban and rural areas, and those between men and women, were consistent across the three younger age groups (65-69, 70-74, and 75-79 years) studied, but reduced in the two oldest age groups (80-84 and ≥85 years). Conclusions: The age-standardised mortality rate from unintentional falls increased between 2010 and 2021 among Chinese adults aged 65 years or older, with wide variations across years. Unintentional fall mortality has recently increased among adults aged 65 to 84 years. Differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between men and women, deserve the attention of injury researchers and policymakers.

RÉSUMÉ

Stroke remains the leading cause of death and disability in some countries, predominantly attributed to acute ischemic stroke (AIS). While intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy are widely acknowledged as effective treatments for AIS, boasting a high recanalization rate, there is a significant discrepancy between the success of revascularization and the mediocre clinical outcomes observed among patients with AIS. It is now increasingly understood that the implementation of effective cerebral protection strategies, serving as adjunctive treatments to reperfusion, can potentially improve the outcomes of AIS patients following recanalization therapy. Herein, we reviewed several promising cerebral protective methods that have the potential to slow down infarct growth and protect ischemic penumbra. We dissect the underlying reasons for the mismatch between high recanalization rates and moderate prognosis and introduce a novel concept of "multi-target and multi-phase adjunctive cerebral protection" to guide our search for neuroprotective agents that can be administered alongside recanalization therapy.

RÉSUMÉ

Transactive memory system (TMS) makes learning and transferring knowledge easy and efficient. This study has constructed a conceptual model of TMS to reveal the crucial factors influencing the formation of a TMS in online asynchronous learning to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration and enhance knowledge transfer effectiveness. The conceptual model of TMS is built upon theoretical foundations concerning the creation of TMS and the variables influencing them. The study has put forth a set of hypotheses to predict the expected effects of group factors, individual factors, task interdependence, the degree of intellectual silence, and knowledge management on the formation of TMS. In this study, a total of 229 questionnaire data were collected from undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in Northeast China who had experience with an online asynchronous learning TMS. Structural equation modeling has been employed to identify the key indicators involved and their influence on the formation of TMS. The empirical study was carried out using statistical analysis of SPSS data, with the results indicating that each factor has varying impacts on knowledge management, ultimately affecting the formation of TMS. These findings provide a more nuanced understanding of how these factors shape online asynchronous learning environments.

RÉSUMÉ

The unprecedented surge in global methane levels has raised global concerns in recent years, casting a spotlight on China as a pivotal emitter. China has taken several actions to curb the methane emissions, but their effects remain unclear. Here, we developed the Global ObservatioN-based system for monitoring Greenhouse GAses for methane (GONGGA-CH4) and assimilate GOSAT XCH4 observations to assess changes in China's methane emissions. We find the average rate of increase in China's methane emissions (0.1 ± 0.3 Tg CH4 yr-2) during 2016-2021 slowed down compared to the preceding years (2011-2015) (0.9 ± 0.5 Tg CH4 yr-2), in contrast to the concurrent acceleration of global methane emissions. As a result, the contribution of China to global methane emissions dropped significantly. Notably, the slowdown of China's methane emission is mainly attributable to a reduction in biogenic emissions from wetlands and agriculture, associated with the drying trend in South China and the transition from double-season to single-season rice cropping, while fossil fuel emissions are still increasing. Our results suggest that GONGGA-CH4 provides the opportunity for independent assessment of China's methane emissions from an atmospheric perspective, providing insights into the implementation of methane-related policies that align with its ambitious climate objectives.

RÉSUMÉ

To understand the mitochondrial genome structure of two endangered and long-armed scarab beetles, Propomacrus davidi and Propomacrus bimucronatus, their complete mitogenomes were sequenced for the first time in this study. The complete mitogenomes of P. davidi and P. bimucronatus were 18, 042 bp and 18, 104 bp in length, respectively. The gene orders of their mitogenomes were highly consistent with other Coleopteran species, and the typical ATN was used as the start codon in most protein coding genes. The incomplete stop codon T was used in cox1, cox2, and nad5, and TAN was used as a complete stop codon in most protein coding genes. All predicted tRNAs could form a typical cloverleaf secondary structure, except that trnS1 lacked the dihydrouridine arm. Based on the maximum likelihood and the Bayesian inference methods, phylogenetic trees of 50 species were reconstructed. The results showed that P. davidi, P. bimucronatus, Cheirotonus jansoni and Cheirotonus gestroi clustered in the same branch, and were the most closely related. The results supported that subfamily Euchirinae is a monophyletic group of Scarabaeidae, which was consistent with the morphological classification. These molecular data enriched the complete mitogenome database of Euchirinae, and improved our understanding of the phylogenetic relationship and evolutionary characteristics of these two endangered species.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Hypertension management apps (HMAs) can be effective in controlling blood pressure, but their actual impact is often suboptimal. Establishing a user satisfaction evaluation indicator system for HMAs can assist app developers in enhancing app design and functionality, while also helping users identify apps that best meet their needs. This approach aims to improve the overall effectiveness of app usage. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically collect data on HMAs and their user reviews in the United States and China. It analyzes app usage patterns and functional characteristics, identifies factors influencing user satisfaction from existing research, and develops a satisfaction evaluation indicator system to provide more accurate recommendations for improving user satisfaction. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive statistical analysis to assess the development status of HMAs in both countries and applied the task-technology fit model to evaluate whether the app functionalities align with business needs. We separately summarized the factors influencing user satisfaction in both countries from previous research, utilized the analytic hierarchy process to develop an evaluation indicator system for HMA user satisfaction, and calculated satisfaction levels. Based on these findings, we propose improvements to enhance app functionality and user satisfaction. RESULTS: In terms of current development status, there were fewer HMAs and user reviews in China compared with the United States. Regarding app functional availability, fewer than 5% (4/91) of the apps achieved a demand fulfillment rate exceeding 80% (8/10). Overall, user satisfaction in both countries was low. CONCLUSIONS: In the United States, user satisfaction was lowest for advertising distribution, data synchronization, and reliability. By contrast, Chinese apps need improvements in cost efficiency and compatibility.

RÉSUMÉ

An untargeted lipidomic analysis was conducted to investigate the lipid composition of human milk across different lactation stages and gestational ages systematically. A total of 25 lipid subclasses and 934 lipid species as well as 90 free fatty acids were identified. Dynamic changes of the lipids throughout lactation and gestational phases were highlighted. In general, lactation stages introduced more variations in the lipid composition of human milk than gestational ages. Most lipids decreased as the milk progressed from the colostral stage to the mature stage, with some reaching a peak at the transitional stage. Significant variations in lipid composition across gestational ages were predominantly evident during early lactation period. In mature milks, most of the lipids exhibited no discernible statistical differences among gestational ages. This elucidation offers valuable insights and guidance for tailoring precise nutritional strategies for infants with diverse health needs.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common skin disease characterized by progressive hair loss, with negative psychological impacts on patients, especially young people. The primary pathogenesis of AGA involves the action of 5α-reductase converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, leading to gradual miniaturization of genetically susceptible hair follicles. Finasteride inhibits type II 5α-reductase, while dutasteride simultaneously inhibits type I and type II 5α-reductase. Currently, finasteride is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of AGA, but its efficacy remains poor in some patients. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to review the treatment of androgenetic alopecia with dutasteride. Oral dutasteride, intradermal injection of dutasteride (mesotherapy) and other related treatment methods are included. METHODS: We performed a Medical Subject Heading search in the PubMed database using "androgenetic alopecia" and "dutasteride". CONCLUSIONS: Compared to finasteride, oral dutasteride has better efficacy and comparable tolerability, and most adverse events are mild and reversible, making it an effective treatment option for AGA. Mesotherapy with dutasteride is a therapeutic option to reduce the systemic adverse effects of the drug, but there are no standardized treatment protocols and large-scale clinical trials. Microneedling combined with dutasteride solution also has its own unique efficacy for treating AGA. Liposomes or nanoparticles of dutasteride are still under development and may become a more optimized topical formulation in the future.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Lymphoma is the most common secondary cause of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in adults. Lymphoma-associated HLH (LA-HLH) in the elderly population is not rare, however, little has been reported regarding clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors, and outcomes of LA-HLH in the elderly population. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a multicenter cohort of elderly patients with LA-HLH. Clinicopathological features and treatment information were collected. The impacts of baseline characteristics and treatments on survival outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 173 elderly patients with LA-HLH were included. Compared with young patients, elderly patients showed different clinical and laboratory features. Regarding lymphoma subtypes, B-cell lymphoma was more common in elderly patients (elderly 61.3% vs. young 32.3%, p < 0.001) while T/NK-cell lymphoma was more common in young patients (65.3% vs. 35.3%, p < 0.001). The median survival of elderly patients with LA-HLH was only 92 days. The prior use of HLH therapy or etoposide-containing HLH therapy was not associated with improved overall survival. T/NK-cell subtype, a lower platelet count (≤53 × 109/L), a lower albumin level (≤32.1 g/L), a higher LDH level (>1407 U/L), and a higher creatinine level (>96.8 µmol/L) were independent predictors of decreased overall survival and 60-day survival. A prognostic index was established and demonstrated to be robust in predicting the overall survival and 60-day survival of elderly patients with LA-HLH. CONCLUSIONS: LA-HLH in elderly patients displayed heterogeneous clinicopathological features and survival outcomes. Treatments need to be optimized to improve the outcomes of elderly patients with LA-HLH.

RÉSUMÉ

The application of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in non-human primates (NHPs) is critical for advancing understanding of brain networks and developing treatments for neurological diseases. Improving the precision of targeting can significantly enhance the efficacy of these interventions. Here, we introduce a 3D-printed helmet designed to achieve repeatable and precise neuromodulation targeting in awake rhesus monkeys, eliminating the need of head fixation. Imaging studies confirmed that the helmet consistently targets the primary motor cortex (M1) with a margin of error less than 1 mm. Evaluations of stimulation efficacy revealed high resolution and stability. Additionally, physiological evaluations under propofol anesthesia showed that the helmet effectively facilitated the generation of recruitment curves for motor area, confirming successful neuromodulation. Collectively, our findings present a straightforward and effective method for achieving consistent and precise NIBS targeting in awake NHPs, potentially advancing both basic neuroscience research and the development of clinical neuromodulation therapies.

RÉSUMÉ

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by cognitive, affective, and social dysfunction, resulting in hallucinations, delusions, emotional blunting, and disordered thinking. In recent years, proteomics has been increasingly influential in SCZ research. Glycosylation, a key post-translational modification, can alter neuronal stability and normal signaling in the nervous system by affecting protein folding, stability, and cellular signaling. Recent research evidence suggests that abnormal glycosylation patterns exist in different brain regions in autopsy samples from SCZ patients, and that there are significant differences in various glycosylation modification types and glycosylation modifying enzymes. Therefore, this review explores the mechanisms of aberrant modifications of N-glycosylation, O-glycosylation, glycosyltransferases, and polysialic acid in the brains of SCZ patients, emphasizing their roles in neurotransmitter receptor function, synaptic plasticity, and neural adhesion. Additionally, the effects of antipsychotic drugs on glycosylation processes and the potential for glycosylation-targeted therapies are discussed. By integrating these findings, this review aims to provide a comprehensive perspective to further understand the role of aberrant glycosylation modifications in the pathophysiology of SCZ.

RÉSUMÉ

OBJECTIVES: With the increasing demand and application of lymphocyte subsets detection in clinical laboratories, different single-platform flow cytometer (FCM) systems have been developed. There is an urgent need to establish the reference intervals (RIs) for different single-platform FCMs and transferring them from one FCM system to another provides a much more feasible and convenient approach. This study aimed to explore the transferability of RIs for lymphocyte subsets across different flow cytometry platforms. METHODS: We first conducted the pairwise method comparison across four FCM platforms, including NovoCyte, BriCyteE6, DxFLEX, and FACSCantoII systems. Next, the transferability of RIs of lymphocyte subsets was evaluated. Furthermore, we conducted the RIs transference based on the FACSCantoII system, BriCyteE6 system and DxFLEX system, except for NK cells. The transferred RIs were further verified by calculating the bias (CV) between the established ones. RESULTS: The results of lymphocyte subsets detection based on the NovoCyte, BriCyteE6, DxFLEX, and FACSCantoII systems were comparable and it was feasible to transfer the RIs of lymphocyte subsets detected by the four FCM systems. The RIs of lymphocyte subsets detection using FACSCantoII, DxFLEX, and BriCyteE6 systems were established. Upon transferring the RIs of lymphocyte subsets from the FACSCantoII system to the BriCyteE6 system, and DxFLEX system except for NK cells, the CV between the transferred RIs and the established ones was below 20 % for all parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The present study illustrated that the RIs of lymphocyte subsets could be transferred across different flow cytometry systems except for NK cells with different definition strategies.

RÉSUMÉ

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women. Due to the high heterogeneity of breast cancer cells, traditional in vitro research models still have major limitations. Therefore, it is urgent to establish an experimental model that can accurately simulate the characteristics of human breast cancer. Breast cancer organoid technology emerged as the times required, that is, to construct tissue analogs with organ characteristics by using a patient's tumor tissue through 3D culture in vitro. Since the breast cancer organoid can fully preserve the histology and genetic characteristics of the original tumor, it provides a reliable model for preclinical drug screening, establishment of breast cancer organoid biobanks, research into the mechanisms of tumor development, and determination of cancer targets. It has promoted personalized treatment for clinical breast cancer patients. This article mainly focuses on recent research progress and applications of organoid technology in breast cancer, discussing the current limitations and prospects of breast cancer organoid technology.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND The incidence of lung diseases in premature newborns is significantly higher than in full-term newborns due to their underdeveloped lungs. Ultrasound and X-ray are commonly-used bedside examinations in neonatology. This study primarily compares the efficacy of chest X-ray (CXR) and lung ultrasound (LUS) images in evaluating lung consolidation and edema in premature newborns at Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on LUS and CXR examination results, along with clinical records of premature newborns admitted to our hospital's NICU from November 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. CXR and LUS scans were performed on the same newborn within a day. We evaluated the consolidations and edema by interpreting the CXR and LUS images, then compared the findings. RESULTS Out of 75 cases, 34 showed lung consolidations on LUS (45%), while only 14 exhibited consolidations on CXR (19%). The detection rate of consolidations by LUS was significantly higher compared to CXR (34/75 vs 14/75, P<0.001). Differences were observed between the 2 bedside examinations in identifying consolidations, with some cases seen only on LUS. CXR struggled to accurately assess the severity of lung edema visible on LUS, showing significant disparity in detecting interstitial edema (53/75 vs 21/75, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS LUS outperforms chest CXR for bedside assessment of lung consolidation and edema in premature newborns.
