RÉSUMÉ

Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID-19 in China. Methods: This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade-A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID-19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders. Results: Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self-reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms. Conclusions: The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is high in China. Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors, including sex, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, history of head-facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking and drinking history, and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Concerns about the adverse effects of excessive oxygen have grown over the years. This study investigated the relationship between high oxygen saturation and short-term prognosis of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) after liberal use of oxygen. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study collected data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database (ICU cohort) and a tertiary stroke center (general ward cohort). The data on pulse oximetry-derived oxygen saturation (SpO2) during the first 24 h in ICU and general wards were respectively extracted. RESULTS: Overall, 1117 and 372 patients were included in the ICU and general ward cohort, respectively. Among the patients from the ICU cohort, a spoon-shaped association was observed between minimum SpO2 and the risk of in-hospital mortality (non-linear P<0.0001). In comparison with minimum SpO2 of 93-97%, the minimum SpO2>97% was associated with a significantly higher risk of in-hospital mortality after adjustment for confounders. Sensitivity analysis conducted using propensity score matching did not change this significance. The same spoon-shaped association between minimum SpO2 and the risk of in-hospital mortality was also detected for the general ward cohort. In comparison with the group with 95-97% SpO2, the group with SpO2>97% showed a stronger association with, but non-significant risk for, in-hospital mortality after adjustment for confounders. The time-weighted average SpO2>97% was associated significantly with in-hospital mortality in both cohorts. CONCLUSION: Higher SpO2 (especially a minimum SpO2>97%) was unrewarding after liberal use of oxygen among patients with sICH and might even be potentially detrimental.

RÉSUMÉ

Mechanical stress can modulate the fate of cells in both physiological and extreme conditions. Recurrence of tumors after thermal ablation, a radical therapy for many cancers, indicates that some tumor cells can endure temperatures far beyond physiological ones. This unusual heat resistance with unknown mechanisms remains a key obstacle to fully realizing the clinical potential of thermal ablation. By developing a 3D bioprinting-based thermal ablation system, we demonstrate that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells in this 3D model exhibit enhanced heat resistance as compared with cells on plates. Mechanistically, the activation of transcription factor SP1 under mechanical confinement enhances the transcription of Interleukin-4-Induced-1, which catalyzes tryptophan metabolites to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), leading to heat resistance. Encouragingly, the AHR inhibitor prevents HCC recurrence after thermal ablation. These findings reveal a previously unknown role of mechanical confinement in heat resistance and provide a rationale for AHR inhibitors as neoadjuvant therapy.

RÉSUMÉ

In this work, a dual-band transmissive polarization conversion metasurface (PCM), with omnidirectional polarization and low profile, is proposed. The periodic unit of the PCM is composed of three metal layers separated by two substrates. The upper patch layer of the metasurface is the patch-receiving antenna, while the bottom layer is the patch-transmitting antenna. Both antennas are arranged in an orthogonal way so that the cross-polarization conversion can be realized. The equivalent circuit analysis, structure design, and experimental demonstration are conducted in detail, the polarization conversion rate (PCR) is greater than 90% within two frequency bands of 4.58-4.69 GHz and 5.33-5.41 GHz, and the PCR at two center operating frequencies of 4.64 GHz and 5.37 GHz is as high as 95%, with a thickness of only 0.062λL, where λL is the free space wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. The PCM can realize a cross-polarization conversion, when the incident linearly polarized wave at an arbitrary polarization azimuth, which indicates that it has the characteristics of omnidirectional polarization.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: The best choice between levodopa alone and levodopa sparing medications for early Parkinson's disease (PD) remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the effect and safety of levodopa alone and levodopa sparing therapy in symptom relief, neuroimage results and complications. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials of early PD patients comparing levodopa-alone with levodopa-sparing therapy. The mean difference (MD) and the risk ratio (RR) were meta-analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-three articles with 4913 patients were included. Significantly greater benefit was detected for the levodopa group in the changes of Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part II (p < 0.00001), III (p < 0.00001), and total (p < 0.00001) scores, and the between-group MD in part III score increased over time. The loss of the radioligands uptake in levodopa-alone group was also increasingly greater over time. Patients treated with levodopa alone were at higher risk for wearing-off (p < 0.001) and dyskinesia (p < 0.001), but the RR for dyskinesia between the two groups decreased after 2 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Levodopa-alone therapy might be superior in motor symptom relief than levodopa-sparing therapy for early PD patients, and the motor advantage of levodopa-alone might grow over time. Sparing therapy might be associated with less risk of wearing-off and dyskinesia, but the events between the two groups might not be different in the long run. Overall, levodopa alone therapy might bring more net benefit to early PD patients compared with levodopa sparing strategies. The clinical and imaging findings are conflicting, which requires further investigation.

RÉSUMÉ

Numerous studies have been made to design pattern reconfigurable THz antennas to achieve optimum performance for particular environmental conditions. However, it is still a challenge to achieve large angle beam steering for reconfigurable antenna in terahertz band. Here we propose a 360-degree beam steering THz antenna using active frequency selective surface (AFSS) based on hybrid graphene-gold structure. The proposed antenna consists of a THz omnidirectional monopole antenna coated with a hexagonal AFSS screen. By adjusting the chemical potential of graphene from 0 to 0.5eV, the AFSS unit cell can be switched from ON state (high transmission) to OFF state (total reflection) in terahertz, which can steer the beam direction as the monopole antenna is surrounded with six parts of AFSS screen with different ON/OFF states. In this way, the antenna can achieve beam scanning covering 360 degrees. Moreover, unlike the conventional AFSS with only two states, the reflection and transmission coefficient of the proposed AFSS are continuously variable due to the tunable chemical potential, which allows the radiation gain of antenna to be enlarged or suppressed. This antenna may serve the reconfigurable THz wireless system with flexible beam direction and gain level.

RÉSUMÉ

Numerous studies have been made to design switchable terahertz absorber for the application of amplitude modulator. However, it is still a challenge to achieve large modulation range while maintaining broad bandwidth. Here, we propose a switchable broadband absorber/reflector in the low-terahertz regime. By utilizing a hybrid graphene-gold metasurface on SiO2/pSi/PDMS substrate with an aluminum back, an excellent absorption across 0.53-1.05 THz with a wide incident angles for both TE and TM polarizations is achieved. By controlling the voltage across gold electrode and pSi, the chemical potential of graphene can be changed correspondingly. When the chemical potential of graphene varied from 0eV to 0.3eV, the state of the proposed structure can be switched from absorption (>90%) to reflection (>82%) over the whole operation bandwidth. Electric field intensity and surface loss density of the proposed absorber under different chemical potential are given to have a physical insight of the mechanisms. The switchable absorber/reflector can enable a wide application of high performance terahertz devices, such as active camouflage, imaging, modulators and electro-optic switches.

RÉSUMÉ

A simple, rapid and reliable microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for simultaneous determination of the seven bioactive constituents in Guizhi Fuling capsule (GFC), namely gallic acid, amygdalin, albiflorin, paeoniflorin, paeonol, cinnamic acid and pachymic acid, respectively. The operation of MAE optimised through orthogonal array design experiment was performed at 80°C for 10 min with methanol-water (70:30, v/v) as the extracting solvent. The method was validated including intra- and inter-day precision, repeatability and stability, with relative standard deviation less than 3.9%, 3.3%, 4.4% and 3.1%, respectively. All analytes showed the good linearity (r >0.999), and their average recoveries varied between 98.2% and 101.2%. The results indicated that this method was simple, effective and suitable for the quality control of GFC.
