RÉSUMÉ

Hybrid metal halides are an extraordinary class of optoelectronic materials with extensive applications. To further diversify and study the in-depth structure-property relations, we report here a new family of 21 zero-dimensional hybrid bimetallic chlorides with the general formula A(L)n[BClm] (A=rare earth (RE), alkaline earth metals and Mn; L=solvent ligand; and B=Sb, Bi and Te). The RE(DMSO)8[BCl6] (RE=La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy; DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide) series shows broadband emission attributed to triplet radiative recombination from Sb and Bi, incorporating the characteristic emission of RE metals, where Eu(DMSO)8[BiCl6] shows a staggering PL quantum yield of 94 %. The pseudo-octahedral [SbCl5] with Cl vacancy in AII(DMSO)6[SbCl5] (AII=Mg, Ca and Mn) and the square pyramidal [SbCl5] in AII(TMSO)6[SbCl5] (TMSO=tetramethylene sulfoxide) enhance the stereoactive expression of the 5 s2 lone pairs of Sb3+, giving rise to the observation of dual-band emission of singlet and triplet emission, respectively. A series of Te(IV) analogues have been characterized, showing blue-light-excitable single-band emission. This work expands the materials space for hybrid bimetallic halides with an emphasis on harnessing the RE elements, and provides important insights into designing new emitters and regulating their properties.

High-power phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (hp-WLEDs) have been widely involved in modern society as outdoor lighting sources. In these devices, due to the Joule effect, the high applied currents cause high operation temperatures (>500 K). Under these conditions, most phosphors lose their emission, an effect known as thermal quenching (TQ). Here, we introduce a zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide, Rb3InCl6:xSb3+, as a suitable anti-TQ phosphor offering robust anti-TQ behavior up to 500 K. We ascribe this behavior of the metal halide to two factors: (1) a compensation process via thermally activated energy transfer from structural defects to emissive centers and (2) an intrinsic structural rigidity of the isolated octahedra in the 0D structure. The anti-TQ phosphor-based WLEDs can stably work at a current of 2000 mA. The low synthesis cost and nontoxic composition reported here can herald a new generation of anti-TQ phosphors for hp-WLED.

Double perovskites (DP) have attracted extensive attention due to their rich structures and wide application prospects in the field of optoelectronics. Here, we report 15 new Bi-based double perovskite derived halides with the general formula of A2 BBiX6 (A=organic cationic ligand, B=K or Rb, X=Br or I). These materials are synthesized using organic ligands to coordinate with metal ions with a sp3 oxygen, and diverse structure types have been obtained with distinct dimensionalities and connectivity modes. The optical band gaps of these phases can be tuned by changing the halide, the organic ligand and the alkali metal, varying from 2.0 to 2.9 eV. The bromide phases exhibit increasing photoluminescence (PL) intensity with decreasing temperature, while the PL intensity of iodide phases changes nonmonotonically with temperature. Because the majority of these phases are non-centrosymmetric, second harmonic generation (SHG) responses are also measured for selected non-centrosymmetric materials, showing different particle-size-dependent trends. Our findings give rise to a series of new structural types to the DP family, and provide a powerful synthetic handle for symmetry breaking.

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent tunability and versatility. Here, we have selected pyridinium derivatives with different substituent groups or substitution positions as the organic templating cations and obtained six 1D chain-like structures. They are divided into three types: type I (single chain), type II (double chain), and type III (triple chain), with tunable optical band gaps and emission properties. Among them, only (2,4-LD)PbBr3 (2,4-LD = 2,4-lutidine) shows an exciton-dependent emission phenomenon, ranging from strong yellow-white to weak red-white light. By comparing its photoluminescence spectrum with that of its bromate (2,4-LD)Br, it is found that the strong yellow-white emission at 534 nm mainly came from the organic component. Furthermore, through a comparison of the fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of (2,4-LD)PbBr3 and (2-MP)PbBr3 (2-MP = 2-methylpyridine) with similar structures at different temperatures, we confirm that the tunable emission of (2,4-LD)PbBr3 comes from different photoluminescent sources corresponding to organic cations and self-trapped excitons. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that (2,4-LD)PbBr3 has a stronger interaction between organic and inorganic components compared to (2-MP)PbBr3. This work highlights the importance of organic templating cations in hybrid metal halides and the new functionalities associated with them.

BACKGROUND: Open fractures of the tibia are mostly caused by high-energy injuries, accompanied by severe soft tissue injuries. Staged operations are reported performing better prognosis in these cases. CASE SUMMARY: The author reports a case of open comminuted fracture of the left tibia (GustilloIIIA) and discusses its clinical features and treatment experience with the literature. The patient was admitted to our hospital by an ambulance for half an hour due to pain in her left leg caused by a car collision on an electric bike. During hospitalization, external fixation and an intramedullary nail were sequential used. CONCLUSION: The case report suggests that cortex screws are likely benefit the prognosis of severe open tibial fracture.

BACKGROUND: Immune dysfunction is a common and serious complication of sepsis. This study finds key genes linked to immunity in sepsis. METHODS: The "Limma package" was used to analyze GSE154918 datasets for differentially expressed genes. The differentially expressed genes were then enriched for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway, and interleukin 2 receptor subunit Beta (IL2RB) protein coding gene was chosen for investigation. IL2RB expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was assessed by polymerase chain reaction. White blood cells of septic patients and healthy controls were collected from hospitals and linked with acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) of septic patients using Pearson's correlation analysis. PBMC cells were transfected with IL2RB, and the effect of transfection was observed on cellular interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-12, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17A. RESULTS: A total of 686 differential genes, comprising 446 upregulated and 240 down regulated genes, were identified. The enrichment of KEGG pathway revealed that the majority of differential genes were enriched in the T helper (Th1)/Th2 cell and Th17 cell differentiation pathways. In patients with sepsis, correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between IL2RB and APACHE II score, SOFA score, CRP, and PCT. IFN-γ and IL-12 levels were elevated in PBMC of septic patients after IL2RB transfection, but IL-4, IL-10, and IL-17A levels were lowered. CONCLUSION: Sepsis-induced immunological dysfunction is improved by IL2RB, which also balances Th1/Th2 responses and prevents Th17 activation. © 2023 Codon Publications. Dysregulated endocrine hormones (EHs) contribute to tumorigenesis, but how EHs affect the tumor immune microenvironment (TIM) and the immunotherapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unclear. Here, endogenous ouabain (EO), an adrenergic hormone, is elevated in patients with NSCLC and closely related to tumor pathological stage, metastasis, and survival. EO promotes the suppression of TIM in vivo by modulating the expression of immune checkpoint proteins, in which programmed cell death protein ligand 1 (PD-L1) plays a major role. EO increases PD-L1 transcription; however, the EO receptor Na- and K-dependent adenosine triphosphatase (Na, K-ATPase) α1 interacts with PD-L1 to trigger the endocytic degradation of PD-L1. This seemingly contradictory result led us to discover the mechanism whereby EO cooperates with Na, K-ATPase α1 to finely control PD-L1 expression and dampen tumoral immunity. In conclusion, the Na, K-ATPase α1/EO signaling facilitates immune escape in lung cancer, and manipulation of this signaling shows great promise in improving immunotherapy for lung adenocarcinoma.

The design of power supply systems for wearable applications requires both flexibility and durability. Thermoelectrochemical cells (TECs) with large Seebeck coefficient can efficiently convert low-grade heat into electricity, thus having attracted considerable attention in recent years. Utilizing hydrogel electrolyte essentially addresses the electrolyte leakage and complicated packaging issues existing in conventional liquid-based TECs, which well satisfies the need for flexibility. Whereas, the concern of mechanical robustness to ensure stable energy output remains yet to be addressed. Herein, a flexible quasi-solid-state TEC is proposed based on the rational design of a hydrogel electrolyte, of which the thermogalvanic effect and mechanical robustness are simultaneously regulated via the multivalent ions of a redox couple. The introduced redox ions not only endow the hydrogel with excellent heat-to-electricity conversion capability, but also act as ionic crosslinks to afford a dual-crosslinked structure, resulting in reversible bonds for effective energy dissipation. The optimized TEC exhibits a high Seebeck coefficient of 1.43 mV K-1 and a significantly improved fracture toughness of 3555 J m-2, thereby can maintain a stable thermoelectrochemical performance against various harsh mechanical stimuli. This study reveals the high potential of the quasi-solid-state TEC as a flexible and durable energy supply system for wearable applications.

KEY MESSAGE: This review contains functional roles of NAC transcription factors in the transcriptional regulation of ripening in tomato fruit, describes the interplay between ABA/ethylene and NAC TFs in tomato fruit ripening. Fruit ripening is regulated by a complex network of transcription factors (TFs) and genetic regulators in response to endogenous hormones and external signals. Studying the regulation of fruit ripening has important significance for controlling fruit quality, enhancing nutritional value, improving storage conditions and extending shelf-life. Plant-specific NAC (named after no apical meristem (NAM), Arabidopsis transcription activator factor 1/2 (ATAF1/2) and Cup-shaped cotyledon (CUC2)) TFs play essential roles in plant development, ripening and stress responses. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the regulation of NAC TFs in fruit ripening, discuss the interactions between NAC and other factors in controlling fruit development and ripening, and emphasize how NAC TFs are involved in tomato fruit ripening through the ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) pathways. The signaling network regulating ripening is complex, and both hormones and individual TFs can affect the status or activity of other network participants, which can alter the overall ripening network regulation, including response signals and fruit ripening. Our review helps in the systematic understanding of the regulation of NAC TFs involved in fruit ripening and provides a basis for the development or establishment of complex ripening regulatory network models.

BACKGROUND: Ziziphus jujuba Miller cv. Dongzao is extremely susceptible to reddening, browning, nutritional loss, and perishability after harvest. In this study, we evaluated the mechanisms of calcium chloride and chitosan/nano-silica composite film treatments on the quality, especially in reddening, by physiological and metabolomic assays. RESULTS: The treatment delayed the decline of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), and chalcone isomerase (CHI) activities. Meanwhile, the treated groups retarded the increases in anthocyanin and quercetin contents by inhibiting the gene expressions of flavonol synthase (ZjFLS), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (ZjDFR), and anthocyanidin synthase (ZjANS), while promoting leucoanthocyanidin reductase (ZjLAR) expression, which leads to retardation of fruit reddening. Anthocyanins were found to be responsible for post-harvest winter jujube reddening through principal component analysis. Results from the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution indicated that the treated group delayed the decline of the quality of 'Dongzao' and extended its shelf life. CONCLUSION: The treatment induced the heightening of flavonoids metabolism. They enhanced the nutritional value and the ability to resist stress by delaying the decline of PAL, CHS, and CHI activities. Meanwhile, the treated groups retarded the increase in anthocyanin and quercetin contents by inhibiting the gene expressions of ZjFLS, ZjDFR, and ZjANS and promoting ZjLAR expression, which leads to retardation of fruit reddening. Anthocyanins are responsible for post-harvest winter jujube reddening. Coating treatment effectively delayed the decline of winter jujube quality. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The formation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment and up-regulation of PD-L1 protein are the main causes of tumor immune escape. Previous reports suggest that Angiotensin II (Ang II) can modulate the immune status of tumor microenvironment in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the underlying mechanism remains not fully understood. Here we demonstrated that AngII treatment causes the reduction of intratumoral infiltrating CD4 T lymphocytes in tumor-bearing mice, increases the accumulation of immunosuppressive granulocytes and TAMs in tumor tissue, and upregulates the expression levels of immunosuppressive marker genes. In addition, AngII/AGTR1 axis triggers cell PD-L1 expression through a mechanism involving increases in PD-L1 mRNA stability by human antigen R (HuR), an AU-rich element (ARE)-binding protein. Collectively, AngII/AGTR1 signaling promotes the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment by upregulating PD-L1 in NSCLC, the mechanism of which is largely accounted by HuR-mediated PD-L1 mRNA stabilization.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between the tip apex distance (TAD) and migration of helical blade in the femoral head of geriatric intertrochanteric fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study of intertrochanteric fractures treated with the proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) between June 2015 and June 2018 was performed. There were 32 males and 55 females with an average age of 84.7 years (range, 80-101 years). All of them were unilateral fresh closed intertrochanteric fractures caused by low energy injury. According to AO/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification, 33 cases belonged to type 31-A1, 35 cases to type 31-A2, and 19 cases to type 31-A3. The time interval from injury to operation was 1-16 days (mean, 3.7 days). The TAD was measured according to immediate postoperative X-ray films. The cases were divided into two groups: group A with TAD less than 20 mm and group B with TAD greater than 20 mm. The difference of fracture healing and migration of helical blade between the two groups were observed. RESULTS: According to the TAD value immediately after operation, 49 patients in group A had TAD of 8.9-19.7 mm, with an average of 18.6 mm; 38 patients in group B had TAD of 20.1-41.4 mm, with an average of 27.7 mm. The 87 patients were followed up for an average of 11.7 months, ranging from 4 to 28 months. Three cases (all in group B) underwent screw blade cutting and displacement, which resulted in internal fixation failure, including 1 case with femoral head cut upward and 2 cases with femoral head penetrated inward. The remaining 84 cases had bone healing without internal fixation related complications such as fracture of internal fixator and fracture of femoral shaft. There was significant difference in the incidence of internal fixation failure between group A and group B ( P=0.049). CONCLUSION: Reducing the TAD value of helical blade appropriately (15-20 mm) in PFNA internal fixation for intertrochanteric fracture patients over 80 years old can increase initial stability without increasing the risk of helical blade migration.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients, the L858R/T790M mutation of the epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a major cause of acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs treatment that limits their therapeutic efficacy. Identification of drugs that can preferentially kill the NSCLC harbouring L858R/T790M mutation is therefore critical. Here, we have evaluated the effects of ursolic acid, an active component isolated from herbal sources, on erlotinib-resistant H1975 cells that harbour the L858R/T790M mutation. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Gene expression omnibus (GEO) profiles analyses was applied to detect differentially expressed genes in NSCLC cells harbouring EGFR mutation. AnnexinV-FITC/PI, TUNEL staining, MTT, wound healing, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, western blots, immunostaining, dual-luciferase reporters and ChIP-PCR were utilized to investigate the effects of ursolic acid in vitro and in vivo. KEY RESULTS: The cancer/testis antigen family 45 member A2 (CT45A2) was highly expressed in H1975 cells. Ectopic expression of CT45A2 in H1975 cells increased cell proliferation and motility in vitro. Silencing the CT45A2 expression strongly attenuated H1975 cells motility and growth. The anti-cancer effect of ursolic acid was critically dependent on CT45A2 expression in H1975 cells. Ursolic acid suppressed CT45A2 gene transcription mediated by transcriptional factor TCF4 and ß-catenin signalling. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: CT45A2 is a novel oncogene for NSCLC with an EGFR T790 mutation. Ursolic acid induced apoptosis and inhibited proliferation of H1975 cells by negatively regulating the ß-catenin/TCF4/CT45A2 signalling pathway. Therefore, ursolic acid may be a potential candidate treatment for NSCLC harbouring the EGFR-L858R/T790M mutation.

Excessive organic acids in grape juice will not only result in poor taste but will also cause turbidity and sedimentation. Tartaric acid exerts the most significant acidity among all organic acids in grape juice. In this study, we used tartaric acid as the main target and anion-exchange resin to remove tartaric acid from concentrated grape juice. Factors influencing the removal process were optimized by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection and statistical analysis for optimal deacidification of concentrated grape juice. Use of the anion-exchange resin 335 treat the concentrated grape juice at a ratio of 1:6 (2:11.98) at 15.57°C for 4.35 hr. The tartaric acid removal rate reached 69.01%; the anion-exchange resin 335 demonstrated the best removal effect.

RATIONALE: A Mason type III radial head fracture, which is characterized by comminuted fragments of the radial head, is a severe injury. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is an alternative treatment method; however, the technique of using an on-table reduction in combination with surgical glue is rarely reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old man was admitted to our department with complaints of elbow pain after falling down. Elbow radiography and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated characteristics of fractures before the operation. DIAGNOSIS: Radiographic images showed a Mason type III radial head fracture. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent ORIF at our hospital. During the operation, the technique of on-table reconstruction combined with surgical glue was used. OUTCOMES: The patient recovered well and was able to participate in his usual work. LESSONS: Mason type III radial head fractures could be treated with ORIF, and a satisfactory result could be anticipated, thus avoiding a radial head replacement or resection. Anatomical reduction of a comminuted radial head could be obtained via an on-table reconstruction and application of surgical glue.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior pilon fractures are rare injuries and have not yet gained well recognition. The purpose of this study was to present the treatment outcome for patients with posterior pilon fractures treated with buttress plate. METHOD: In this retrospective study we identified patients with posterior pilon fractures of the distal tibia who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation at our institute. Between January 2007 and December 2009, 10 patients (mean age, 46.5 years) who had undergone buttress plating via either a posterolateral approach or a dual posterolateral-posteromedial approach, were selected. All 10 patients were available for follow-up. The clinical outcome was evaluated with the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score and the visual analogue scale (VAS). The radiological evaluation was performed using the osteoarthritis-score (OA-score). RESULTS: Satisfactory reduction and stable fixation were accomplished in all patients. At a mean follow-up of 36.2 months, all patients had good radiological results and showed satisfactory clinical recovery. The mean AOFAS sore was 87.8, the mean OA-score was 0.6, and the mean VAS scores during rest, active motion, and weight-bearing walking were 0.6, 0.8, and 1.4, respectively. CONCLUSION: Buttress plating for posterior pilon fractures gave satisfactory clinical outcomes. It also ensured rigid fixation which in turn enabled earlier postoperative mobilization. OBJECTIVES: To explore the anatomy of the plantar aponeurosis (PA) and its biomechanical effects on the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint and foot arch. METHODS: Anatomic parameters (length, width and thickness of each central PA bundle and the main body of the central part) were measured in 8 cadaveric specimens. The ratios of the length and width of each bundle to the length and width of the central part were used to describe these bundles. Six cadaveric specimens were used to measure the range of motion of the first MTP joint before and after releasing the first bundle of the PA. Another 6 specimens were used to evaluate simulated static weight-bearing. Changes in foot arch height and plantar pressure were measured before and after dividing the first bundle. RESULTS: The average width and thickness of the origin of the central part at the calcaneal tubercle were 15.45 mm and 2.79 mm respectively. The ratio of the length of each bundle to the length of the central part was (from medial to lateral) 0.29, 0.30, 0.28, 0.25, and 0.27, respectively. Similarly, the ratio of the widths was 0.26, 0.25, 0.23, 0.19 and 0.17. The thickness of each bundle at the bifurcation of the PA into bundles was (from medial to lateral) 1.26 mm, 1.04 mm, 0.91 mm, 0.84 mm and 0.72 mm. The average dorsiflexion of the first MTP joint increased 10.16° after the first bundle was divided. Marked acute changes in the foot arch height and the plantar pressure were not observed after division. CONCLUSIONS: The first PA bundle was not the longest, widest, or the thickest bundle. Releasing the first bundle increased the range of motion of the first MTP joint, but did not acutely change foot arch height or plantar pressure during static load testing.

PURPOSE: To compare the safety and efficacy of sedation induced by dexmedetomidine and propofol after oral and maxillofacial surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this trial, 66 patients 18 to 50 years old received oral and maxillofacial surgery and required postoperative nasal endotracheal intubation under overnight sedation with dexmedetomidine or propofol. The dexmedetomidine group (group D) received dexmedetomidine 1.0 µg/kg intravenously for 10 minutes after entering the recovery room. The dose was maintained by giving an intravenous injection of dexmedetomidine 0.4 µg/kg. The injection rate could be modulated from 0.2 to 0.7 µg/kg/hour in the intensive care unit (ICU). If the Ramsay score was lower than 2 and involuntary limb movement occurred, other sedatives were used. The propofol group (group P) was given propofol 0.1 mg/kg intravenously for 10 minutes after entering the recovery room and then maintained with intravenous injections of propofol 1 to 2 mg/kg/hour in the recovery room and ICU. RESULTS: The oxygen desaturation of group P was higher than that of group D (at the first sedation time of 30 minutes), but the mean blood pressure of group P was significantly lower than that of group D at the 10-minute time point. The Ramsay score was higher in group D after the first 3 hours of sedation than in group P (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Dexmedetomidine showed similar safety and efficacy as propofol and could be used for tube-retaining sedation after oral and maxillofacial surgery.
