Background: COPD, combined with Osteoporosis, has a high incidence and potential for great harm. Choosing an optimal diagnostic method to achieve bone mineral density (BMD) screening is crucial for COPD patients. Studies on COPD patients with BMD reduction are lacking. Purpose: To identify the risk factors of BMD reduction and osteoporosis in COPD patients. Patients and Methods: We included a total of 81 patients with AECOPD, who were admitted to the hospital from July 1, 2019, to January 31, 2020. Patients were grouped into BMD normal group, BMD reduced group and OP group. The areas under ROC curve were used to explore the value of CT values in the diagnosis of bone abnormality, and clinical indicators were collected. Results: The CT value of the vertebral cancellous bone is highly correlated with the T value of BMD (R > 5.5, P < 0.0001). Using multivariate Logistic regression analysis, we showed that COPD duration, BMI, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, and long-term inhaled glucocorticoid were independent factors affecting different BMD levels in COPD patients. No significant difference in bone formation indexes between groups. ß-crossL was negatively correlated with serum IL-6 (r=-0.254, P=0.022), and ALP was positively correlated with serum TNF-α (r=0.284, P=0.023). Conclusion: Thoracolumbar vertebral cancellous bone CT has potential value in the diagnosis of bone abnormality. COPD duration, BMI, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, and long-term inhaled glucocorticoid may contribute to the BMD reduction in COPD patients, and serum IL-6 and TNF-α regulate bone metabolism in COPD patients.

Non-radiative recombination, caused by trap states, significantly hampers the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The emerging porous organic polymers (POPs) show promise as a platform for designing novel defect passivation agents due to their rigid and porous structure. However, the POPs reported so far lack either sufficient stability or clear sites of interactions with the defects. Herein, two chlorine-functionalized, fully conjugated porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) were constructed via a decarbonylation reaction. The chlorinated PAFs feature unique long-range conjugated networks bearing multiple chlorine atoms, significantly improving the photovoltaic performance and stability of doped solar cells. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses confirmed the strong passivation effects of conjugated structure to the defect through Cl sites. Specifically, PAF-159, bearing a triphenylamine moiety, demonstrated stronger Cl-Pb bonding and higher passivation efficiency due to the presence of π* anti-bonding orbitals, which elevate the HOMO energy level and facilitate Cl-Pb charge transfer. Consequently, we obtained high-performance PAF-159-doped devices with advanced PCE (24.3%), good storage stability (retaining 86% after 3000 hours), and good long-term operational stability (retaining 92% after 350 hours).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and prognosis of critically ill patients with sepsis combined with acute kidney injury (AKI) in intensive care unit (ICU) in Beijing, and to analyze the risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality among these critically ill patients. METHODS: Data were collected from the Beijing AKI Trial (BAKIT) database, including 9 049 patients consecutively admitted to 30 ICUs in 28 tertiary hospitals in Beijing from March 1 to August 31, 2012. Patients were divided into non-AKI and non-sepsis group, AKI and non-sepsis group, non-AKI and sepsis group, AKI and sepsis group. Clinical data recorded included demographic characteristics, primary reasons for ICU admission, comorbidities, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II(APACHE II) within 24 hours of ICU admission, physiological and laboratory indexes, treatment in the ICU, AKI staging based on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), as well as the prognostic indicators including length of stay in ICU, length of stay in hospital, ICU and in-hospital mortality. The primary endpoint was discharge or in-hospital death. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the risk factors for hospital death in ICU patients. Kaplan-Meier survival curve was drawn to analyze the cumulative survival of ICU patients during hospitalization. RESULTS: A total of 3 107 critically ill patients were ultimately enrolled, including 1 259 cases in the non-AKI and non-sepsis group, 931 cases in the AKI and non-sepsis group, 264 cases in the non-AKI and sepsis groups, and 653 cases in the AKI and sepsis group. Compared with the other three group, patients in the AKI and sepsis group were the oldest, had the lowest mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the highest APACHE II score, SOFA score, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine (SCr) levels, and they also had the highest proportion of receiving mechanical ventilation, requiring vasopressor support, and undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT), all P < 0.01. Of these 3 107 patients, 1 584 (51.0%) were diagnosed with AKI, and the incidence of AKI in patients with sepsis was significantly higher than in those without sepsis [71.2% (653/917) vs. 42.5% (931/2 190), P < 0.01]. The highest proportion of KDIGO 0 stage was observed in the non-sepsis group (57.5%), while the highest proportion of KDIGO 3 stage was observed in the sepsis group (32.2%). Within the same KDIGO stage, the mortality of patients with sepsis was significantly higher than that of non-sepsis patients (0 stage: 17.8% vs. 3.1%, 1 stage: 36.3% vs. 7.4%, 2 stage: 42.7% vs. 17.1%, 3 stage: 54.6% vs. 28.6%, AKI: 46.1% vs. 14.2%). The ICU mortality (38.7%) and in-hospital mortality (46.1%) in the AKI and sepsis group were significantly higher than those in the other three groups. Kaplan-Meier survival curves further showed that the cumulative survival rate of patients with AKI and sepsis during hospitalization was significantly lower than that of the other three groups (53.9% vs. 96.9%, 85.8%, 82.2%, Log-Rank: χ 2 = 379.901, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that among surviving patients, length of ICU stay and total length of hospital stay were significantly longer in the AKI and sepsis group than those in the other three groups (both P < 0.01). Multivariate regression analysis showed that age, APACHE II score and SOFA score within 24 hours of ICU admission, coronary heart disease, AKI, sepsis, and AKI combined with sepsis were independent risk factors for ICU mortality in patients (all P < 0.05). After adjusting for covariates, AKI, sepsis, and sepsis combined with AKI were significantly associated with higher ICU and in-hospital mortality, with the highest ICU mortality [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 14.82, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was 8.10-27.12; Hosmer-Lemeshow test: P = 0.816] and in-hospital mortality (adjusted OR = 7.40, 95%CI was 4.94-11.08; Hosmer-Lemeshow test: P = 0.708) observed in patients with sepsis combined with AKI. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of AKI is high in sepsis patients, and those with both AKI and sepsis have a higher disease burden, more abnormalities in physiological and laboratory indicators, and significantly increased ICU and in-hospital mortality. Among surviving patients, the length of ICU stay and total length of hospital stay are also longer in the AKI and sepsis group. Age, APACHE II score and SOFA score within 24 hours of ICU admission, coronary heart disease, AKI, and sepsis are independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality in ICU patients.

Microbial community in wetland soils is crucial for maintaining the stability of the wetland ecosystem. Nevertheless, the soil microbial community is sensitive to the environmental stress in wetlands. This leads to the possibility that the microbial community structure may be influenced by environmental factors. To gain an in-depth understanding in the response of microbial community structure in wetland soils under different environmental factors, this review comprehensively explores the factors of natural conditions (e.g., different types of wetland, soil physical and chemical properties, climate conditions), biological factors (e.g., plants, soil animals), and human activities (e.g., land use, soil pollution, grazing). Those factors can affect microbial community structure and activities in wetland soils through different ways such as (i) affecting the wetland soil environment in which soil microorganisms survived in, (ii) influencing the available nutrients (e.g., carbon, nitrogen) required for microbial activity, and (iii) the direct effects on soil microorganisms (toxicity or promotion of resistant species). This review can provide references for the conservation of microbial diversity in wetland soils, the maintenance of wetland ecosystem balance, and the wetland ecological restoration.

Purpose: Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz is a widely used classical traditional Chinese herbal medicine, that has shown remarkable efficacy in cancers. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common malignant tumor globally. Interferon (IFN)-γ, a prominent cytokine involved in anti-tumor immunity that has cytostatic, pro-apoptotic, and immune-stimulatory properties for the detection and removal of transformed cells. Atractylenolides-II (AT-II) belongs to the lactone compound that is derived from Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz with anti-cancer activity. However, whether AT-II combined with IFN-γ modulates CRC progression and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study aimed to elucidate the efficacy and pharmaceutical mechanism of action of AT-II combined with IFN-γ synergistically against CRC by regulating the NF-kB p65/PD-L1 signaling pathway. Methods: HT29 and HCT15 cells were treated with AT-II and IFN-γ alone or in combination and cell viability, migration, and invasion were then analyzed using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and Transwell assays, respectively. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism was investigated through western blot assay. The role of AT-II combined with IFN-γ on tumor growth and lung metastases was estimated in vivo. Finally, the population of lymphocytes in tumor tissues of lung metastatic C57BL/6 mice and the plasma cytokine levels were confirmed by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: AT-II or the combination IFN-γ significantly inhibited the growth and migration abilities of CRC cells in vitro and in vivo. The biological mechanisms behind the beneficial effects of AT-II combined with IFN-γ were also measured and inhibition of p38 MAPK, FAK, Wnt/ß-catenin, Smad, and NF-kB p65/PD-L1 pathways was observed. Moreover, AT-II combined with IFN-γ significantly inhibited HCT15 xenograft tumor growth and lung metastases in C57BL/6 mice, which was accompanied by lymphocyte infiltration into the tumor tissues and inflammatory response inactivation. Conclusions: The results showed that the AT-II in combination with IFN-γ could be used as a potential strategy for tumor immunotherapy in CRC. More importantly, the mechanism by which AT-II suppressed CRC progressions was by inhibiting the NF-kB p65/PD-L1 signal pathway.

Flexible paper-based materials play a crucial role in the field of flexible electromagnetic shielding due to their thinness and controllable shape. In this study, we employed the wet paper forming technique to prepare carbon fiber paper with a thickness gradient. The electromagnetic shielding performance of the carbon fiber paper varies with the ladder-like thickness distribution. Specifically, an increase in thickness gradient leads to higher reflectance of the carbon fiber paper. Within the X-band frequency range (8.2-12.4 GHz), reflectivity decreases as electromagnetic wave frequency increases, indicating enhanced penetration of electromagnetic waves into the interior of the carbon fiber paper. This enhancement is attributed to an increased fiber content per unit area resulting from a greater thickness gradient, which further enhances reflection loss and promotes internal multiple reflections and scattering effects, leading to increased absorption loss. Notably, at a 5 mm thickness, our carbon fiber paper exhibits an impressive average overall shielding performance, reaching 63.46 dB. Moreover, it exhibits notable air permeability and mechanical properties, thereby assuming a pivotal role in the realm of flexible wearable devices in the foreseeable future.

To overcome the degradation of insulating properties caused by the water tree aging of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), a self-repairing material for XLPE based on a microcapsule system is proposed. Three-layer shell nucleus microcapsules/XLPE composites with different microcapsule doping content are prepared. The water tree aging experiments are carried out using the water-needle electrode method to analyze the ability of microcapsules to repair the damaged areas of water trees. The results show that, compared with the XLPE material without microcapsules, the electrical properties of composites decline significantly when the doping concentration of three-layer shell nucleus microcapsules is large. When the doping concentration is 1.0 wt%, the microcapsule/XLPE composite breakdown strength has no noticeable change, and the dielectric loss factor does not change significantly, the space charge density decreases, and the space charge properties have been improved considerably. When the water tree branch develops to the position where the microcapsules are located, the microcapsules will rupture and release their internal repair materials and catalysts and react with water to produce an organic silicone resin to fill the water tree cavity, which can achieve an excellent self-healing effect. In addition, the nano-SiO2 on the surface microcapsules can make the microcapsules and matrix better integrated, which avoids the microcapsule accumulation that tends to occur when incorporating microcapsules, thus improving the repair rate.

Copy number variation (CNV) serves as a significant source of genetic diversity in mammals and exerts substantial effects on various complex traits. Pingliang red cattle, an outstanding indigenous resource in China, possess remarkable breeding value attributed to their tender meat and superior marbling quality. However, the genetic mechanisms influencing carcass and meat quality traits in Pingliang red cattle are not well understood. We generated a comprehensive genome-wide CNV map for Pingliang red cattle using the GGP Bovine 100K SNP chip. A total of 755 copy number variable regions (CNVRs) spanning 81.03 Mb were identified, accounting for approximately 3.24% of the bovine autosomal genome. Among these, we discovered 270 potentially breed-specific CNVRs in Pingliang red cattle, including 143 gains, 73 losses, and 54 mixed events. Functional annotation analysis revealed significant associations between these specific CNVRs and important traits such as carcass and meat quality, reproduction, exterior traits, growth traits, and health traits. Additionally, our network and transcriptome analysis highlighted CACNA2D1, CYLD, UBXN2B, TG, NADK, and ITGA9 as promising candidate genes associated with carcass weight and intramuscular fat deposition. The current study presents a genome-wide CNV map in Pingliang red cattle, highlighting breed-specific CNVRs, and transcriptome findings provide valuable insights into the underlying genetic characteristics of Pingliang red cattle. These results offer potential avenues for enhancing meat quality through a targeted breeding program.

Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is a parasite in shrimp farming. EHP mainly parasitizes the hepatopancreas of shrimp, causing slow growth, which severely restricts the economic income of shrimp farmers. To explore the pathogenic mechanism of EHP, the host subcellular construction, molecular biological characteristics, and mitochondrial condition of Litopenaeus vannamei were identified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), real-time qPCR, an enzyme assay, and flow cytometry. The results showed that EHP spores, approximately 1 µm in size, were located on the cytoplasm of the hepatopancreas. The number of mitochondria increased significantly, and mitochondria morphology showed a condensed state in the high-concentration EHP-infected shrimp by TEM observation. In addition, there were some changes in mitochondrial potential, but apoptosis was not significantly different in the infected shrimp. The qPCR results showed that the gene expression levels of hexokinase and pyruvate kinase related to energy metabolism were both upregulated in the diseased L. vannamei. Enzymatic activity showed hexokinase and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly increased in the shrimp infected with EHP, indicating EHP infection can increase the glycolysis process and decrease the oxidative phosphorylation process of L. vannamei. Previous transcriptomic data analysis results also support this conclusion.

Screening high-risk populations is crucial for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones. Here, we employed radiomics to screen high-risk patients for kidney stones. A total of 513 independent kidneys from our hospital between 2020 and 2022 were randomly allocated to training and validation sets at a 7:3 ratio. Radiomic features were extracted using 3Dslicer software. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used to select radiomic features from the 107 extracted features, and logistic regression, decision tree, AdaBoost, and support vector machine (SVM) models were subsequently used to construct radiomic feature prediction models. Among these, the logistic regression algorithm demonstrated the best predictive performance and stability. The area under the curve (AUC) of the logistic regression model based on radiomic features was 0.858 in the training cohort and 0.806 in the validation cohort. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the independent risk factors for kidney stones, which were gender and body mass index (BMI). Combining these independent risk factors improved the predictive performance of the model, with AUC values of 0.860 in the training cohort and 0.814 in the validation cohort. Clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) indicated that the radiomic model provided clinical benefit when the probability ranged from 0.2 to 1.0. The radiomic model has a good ability to screen high-risk patients with kidney stones, facilitating early intervention in kidney stone cases and improving patient prognosis.

Nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat-containing receptor 12-associated autoinflammatory disease (NLRP12-AID) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder. In this study, we reported a case of this rare disease with a novel NLRP12 mutation (A218V, rs749659859). The patient displayed typical symptoms, including recurrent fever, arthralgia, and skin allergies. Elevated serum IgE, decreased apolipoprotein A1, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fluctuating levels of various leukocyte subtypes, procalcitonin, IL6, creatine kinase, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were also detected. Inflammatory lesions were observed in multiple organs using 18F-FDG PET/CT. By mining single-cell transcriptome data, we identified relatively high expression of NLRP12 in monocytes compared to other human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. NLRP12-positive monocytes exhibited reduced expression of IL18, CCL3, and TNFA compared to NLRP12-negative monocytes. Structural analyses suggested that the A218V mutation, along with A218T and F402L, may reduce the ATP-binding affinity of the NLRP12 protein. These findings may provide new insights into the mechanisms of NLRP12-AID, and suggest the potential ATP-based therapy for further investigation.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the effect of beta-blockers (BB) on the response of heart rate (HR) to 6-min walk test (6MWT) in atrial fibrillation (AF) and whether the AF patients treated with BB have a similar HR response to 6MWT as the AF and sinus rhythm (SR) patients without BB treatment at the same resting HR level. METHODS: The before-after study involving 74 AF patients was to evaluate the effect of BB treatment (pre-BB and with BB). The comparison study included 74 BB-treated AF patients (with BB), 74 matched AF patients without BB (no BB), and 74 SR patients. The percentage increase amplitude of HR (HR-PIA) in 6MWT was calculated: [(the exercise HR - the resting HR)/(the resting HR)] × 100%. RESULTS: The before-after study showed that BB treatment decreased the resting and mean exercise HR (98.6 ± 15.2 vs. 85.5 ± 11.2 bpm and 121.3 ± 17.3 vs. 109.0 ± 16.7 bpm) during 6MWT. The comparison study demonstrated that against the SR, the AF with BB and no BB groups have higher mean exercise HR-PIA (28.2 ± 17.1% and 22.0 ± 9.6%, vs. 6.9 ± 3.7%) when their resting HR is similar. Moreover, the mean exercise HR-PIA was also significantly higher in the with BB group than in the no BB group. CONCLUSION: In AF patients with relatively higher resting HR, BB treatment could decrease the resting and exercise HR during 6MWT. However, BB treatment could not effectively attenuate the exercise HR rise as compared with AF without BB treatment, even with similar resting HR levels.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a serious cardiovascular disease, which presents different pathophysiological changes with the prolongation of the disease. Compound danshen dripping pills (CDDP) has obvious advantages in MI treatment and widely used in the clinic. However, the current studies were mostly focused on the endpoint of CDDP intervention, lacking the dynamic attention to the disease process. It is of great value to establish a dynamic research strategy focused on the changes in pharmacodynamic substances for guiding clinical medication more precisely. PURPOSE: It is aimed to explore the dynamic regulating pattern of CDDP on MI based on metabolic trajectory analysis, and then clarify the variation characteristic biomarkers and pharmacodynamic substances in the intervention process. METHODS: The MI model was successfully prepared by coronary artery left anterior descending branch ligation, and then CDDP intervention was given for 28 days. Endogenous metabolites and the components of CDDP in serum were measured by LC/MS technique simultaneously to identify dynamic the metabolic trajectory and screen the characteristic pharmacodynamic substances at different points. Finally, network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques were used to simulate the core pharmacodynamic substances and core target binding, then validated at the genetic and protein level by Q-PCR and western blotting technology. RESULTS: CDDP performed typical dynamic regulation features on metabolite distribution, biological processes, and pharmacodynamic substances. During 1-7 days, it mainly regulated lipid metabolism and inflammation, the Phosphatidylcholine (PC(18:1(9Z/18:1(9Z)) and Sphingomyelin (SM(d18:1/23:1(9Z)), SM(d18:1/24:1(15Z)), SM(d18:0/16:1(9Z))) were the main characteristic biomarkers. Lipid metabolism was the mainly regulation pathway during 14-21 days, and the characteristic biomarkers were the Lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LysoPE(0:0/20:0), PE-NMe2(22:1(13Z)/15:0)) and Sphingomyelin (SM(d18:1/23:1(9Z))). At 28 days, in addition to inflammatory response and lipid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism also played the most important role. Correspondingly, Lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC(20:0/0:0)), Lysophosphatidylserine (LPS(18:0/0:0)) and Fatty acids (Linoelaidic acid) were the characteristic biomarkers. Based on the results of metabolite distribution and biological process, the characteristic pharmacodynamic substances during the intervention were further identified. The results showed that various kinds of Saponins and Tanshinones as the important active ingredients performed a long-range regulating effect on MI. And the other components, such as Tanshinol and Salvianolic acid B affected Phosphatidylcholine and Sphingomyelin through Relaxin Signaling pathway during the early intervention. Protocatechualdehyde and Rosmarinic acid affected Lysophosphatidylethanolamine and Sphingomyelin through EGFR Tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance during the late intervention. Tanshinone IIB and Isocryptotanshinone via PPAR signaling pathway affected Lysophosphatidylcholine, Lysophosphatidylserine, and Fatty acids. CONCLUSION: The dynamic regulating pattern was taken as the entry point and constructs the dynamic network based on metabolic trajectory analysis, establishes the dynamic correlation between the drug-derived components and the endogenous metabolites, and elucidates the characteristic biomarkers affecting the changes of the pharmacodynamic indexes, systematically and deeply elucidate the pharmacodynamic substance and mechanism of CDDP on MI. It also enriched the understanding of CDDP and provided a methodological reference for the dynamic analysis of complex systems of TCM.

Traditional feature dimension reduction methods have been widely used to uncover biological patterns or structures within individual spatial transcriptomics data. However, these methods are designed to yield feature representations that emphasize patterns or structures with dominant high variance, such as the normal tissue spatial pattern in a precancer setting. Consequently, they may inadvertently overlook patterns of interest that are potentially masked by these high-variance structures. Herein we present our graph contrastive feature representation method called CoCo-ST (Comparing and Contrasting Spatial Transcriptomics) to overcome this limitation. By incorporating a background data set representing normal tissue, this approach enhances the identification of interesting patterns in a target data set representing precancerous tissue. Simultaneously, it mitigates the influence of dominant common patterns shared by the background and target data sets. This enables discerning biologically relevant features crucial for capturing tissue-specific patterns, a capability we showcased through the analysis of serial mouse precancerous lung tissue samples.

BACKGROUND: Radix Aconiti Lateralis (Fuzi), a mono-herbal preparation of Aconitum herbs in the genus Aconitum, is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat critical illnesses. The curative effect of Fuzi is remarkable. However, the toxic effects of Fuzi are still a key clinical focus, and the substances inducing nephrotoxicity are still unclear. Therefore, this study proposes a research model combining "in vitro and in vivo component mining-virtual multi-target screening-active component prediction-literature verification" to screen potential nephrotoxic substances rapidly. METHOD: The UHPLC-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap MS analysis method was used for the correlation analysis of Fuzi's in vitro-in vivo chemical substance groups. On this basis, the key targets of nephrotoxicity were screened by combining online disease databases and a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. The computer screening technique was used to verify the binding mode and affinity of Fuzi's components with nephrotoxic targets. Finally, the potential material basis of Fuzi-induced nephrotoxicity was screened. RESULTS: Eighty-one Fuzi components were identified. Among them, 35 components were absorbed into the blood. Based on the network biology method, 21 important chemical components and three potential key targets were screened. Computer virtual screening revealed that mesaconine, benzoylaconine, aconitine, deoxyaconitine, hypaconitine, benzoylhypaconine, benzoylmesaconine, and hypaconitine may be potential nephrotoxic substances of Fuzi. CONCLUSIONS: Fuzi may interact with multiple components and targets in the process of inducing nephrotoxicity. In the future, experiments can be designed to explore further. This study provides a reference for screening Fuzi nephrotoxic components and has certain significance for the safe use of Fuzi.

This study leverages the ancient craft of weaving to prepare membranes that can effectively treat oil/water mixtures, specifically challenging nanoemulsions. Drawing inspiration from the core-shell architecture of spider silk, we have engineered fibers, the fundamental building blocks for weaving membranes, that feature a mechanically robust core for tight weaving, coupled with a CO2-responsive shell that allows for on-demand wettability adjustments. Tightly weaving these fibers produces membranes with ideal pores, achieving over 99.6% separation efficiency for nanoemulsions with droplets as small as 20 nm. They offer high flux rates, on-demand self-cleaning, and can switch between sieving oil and water nanodroplets through simple CO2/N2 stimulation. Moreover, weaving can produce sufficiently large membranes (4800 cm2) to assemble a module that exhibits long-term stability and performance, surpassing state-of-the-art technologies for nanoemulsion separations, thus making industrial application a practical reality.

Endophytic fungi can promote plant growth and development, particularly of Orchidaceae species. Previously, we found that the endophytic fungus Phyllosticta fallopiae DN14, collected from Dendrobium nobile growing on rocks in a wild habitat, significantly promoted growth of its host plant D. nobile, an important herb in Chinese traditional medicine that contains the bioactive component dendrobine. Phyllosticta was positively correlated with FW and dendrobine content of D. nobile and with Si content of the epiphytic matrix. Si is also highly beneficial for the growth and productivity of many plants. Here, we co-cultured D. nobile with P. fallopiae DN14 in half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium with and without various concentrations of Si to investigate the effects of DN14 and Si on plant fresh weight and dendrobine content. We also explored the effects of DN14 infection and colonization on host plant growth, Si accumulation and transport, and expression of key genes, as well as the interaction between DN14 and Si. The combination of DN14 and Si promoted the lignification of D. nobile roots, stems, and leaves and markedly increased the thickening of xylem cell walls. Co-culture with DN14 increased transport of Si from roots to stems and from stems to leaves. Transcriptome sequencing and qRT-PCR analyses showed that enhancement of D. nobile growth by DN14 and Si may involve upregulation of plant hormone-related genes (AUX/IAA and MYC) and lignin biosynthesis genes (HCT, PAL1, and PAL2). Insoluble Si promoted the growth of DN14, perhaps through downregulation of genes (e.g., FBP, MPI, RPIAD) related to carbohydrate metabolism, and DN14 in turn promoted the transformation of insoluble Si into soluble Si for plant uptake. These findings demonstrate that endophytic fungi and Si can improve the growth of D. nobile and therefore show promise as organic amendments for commercial cultivation.

Reversible adhesion with on-demand attachment and detachment is used by many animals for their locomotion. However, achieving robust and switchable adhesion on rough surfaces in artificial adhesives remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a snail mucus-inspired touch-initiate adhesive (TIA), showing robust adhesions on various surfaces. TIA is a polymeric hydrogel photo-cured with the presence of supersaturated sodium acetate (NaAc) in the precursor solution. TIA is soft and flexible at room temperature, allowing it to form conformal contact with objects with various surfaces. The contact with the target surface immediately initiates the crystallization of TIA, increasing the elastic modulus of TIA by an order of magnitude. The increased modulus and the interlocking with the target surfaces thus results in an adhesion strength up to 465.56 ± 84.05 kPa. TIA can be easily detached from the surface by heating to a temperature above 58 °C, showing an adhesion strength of 12.71 ± 2.73 kPa. The detached TIA, even cooled down to and kept at room temperature, is readily used for the subsequent adhesion. The study here not only provides a highly adhesive material for on-demand attachment to various surfaces, but also proposes a new design strategy to compose smart materials.
