BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a lack of affordable and accessible indicators that can accurately predict immune-related adverse events (irAEs) resulting from the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). In order to address this knowledge gap, our study explore the potential predictive value of two ratios, namely the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), for irAEs in cancer patients. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library. Studies involving NLR or PLR with irAEs were included. Quality and risk of bias of the selected studies were assessed. Forest plots were created based on Cox model analysis. Random effects meta-analyses were conducted to estimate odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: After screening 594 studies, a total of 7 eligible studies with 1068 cancer patients were included. Analysis based on Cox regression showed that low neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (L-NLR) (OR = 3.02, 95% CI 1.51 to 6.05, P = 0.002) and low platelet-lymphocyte ratio (L-PLR) (OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.21 to 2.76, P = 0.004) were associated with irAEs. In the subgroup analysis of cut-off value, when the NLR cut-off value was 3, irAEs was significantly correlated with NLR (OR = 2.63, 95% CI 1.63 to 4.26, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Both L-NLR and L-PLR have been found to be significantly associated with irAEs. Consequently, patients identified as being at a higher risk for irAEs should be subjected to more diligent monitoring and close observation.

Chemotherapeutic drugs can cause reproductive damage by affecting sperm quality and other aspects of male fertility. Stem cells are thought to alleviate the damage caused by chemotherapy drugs and to play roles in reproductive protection and treatment. This study aimed to explore the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) on alleviating paclitaxel (PTX)-induced spermatogenesis and male fertility defects. An in vivo PTX-induced mice model was constructed to evaluate the reproductive toxicity and protective roles of hUC-MSCs in male fertility improvement. A 14 day PTX treatment regimen significantly attenuated mice spermatogenesis and sperm quality, including affecting spermatogenesis, reducing sperm counts, and decreasing sperm motility. hUC-MSCs treatment could significantly improve sperm functional indicators. Mating experiments with normal female mice and examination of embryo development at 7.5 days post-coitum (dpc) showed that hUC-MSCs restored male mouse fertility that was reduced by PTX. In IVF experiments, PTX impaired sperm fertility and blastocyst development, but hUC-MSCs treatment rescued these indicators. hUC-MSCs' protective role was also displayed through the increased expression of the fertility-related proteins HSPA2 and HSPA4L in testes with decreased expression in the PTX-treated group. These changes might be related to the PTX-induced decreases in expression of the germ cell proliferation protein PCNA and the meiosis proteins SYCP3, MLH1, and STRA8, which were restored after hUC-MSCs treatment. In the PTX-treated group, the expression of testicular antioxidant proteins SIRT1, NRF2, CAT, SOD1, and PRDX6 was significantly decreased, but hUC-MSCs could maintain these expressions and reverse PTX-related increases in BAX/BCL2 ratios. hUC-MSCs may be a promising agent with antioxidant and anti-apoptosis characteristics that can maintain sperm quality following chemotherapy treatment.

Land degradation is a global problem caused by improper agricultural practices. In tropical China, the rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations are predominantly practiced on forest-cleared lands, considering their sustainable land management potential compared to annual cropping. However, all rubber plantations may not have similar land management capacity. Soil quality index (SQI) can reveal the overall soil status with a single score, which is an efficient tool to evaluate the soil quality of each category of rubber plantations. We investigated 23 soil physical and chemical parameters of three categories of rubber plantations and a primary rainforest, and derived SQI based on these parameters. Soil samples were collected from a rubber monoculture (RM), a rubber-Camellia sinensis agroforestry (RT), a rubber-Dracaena cochinchinensis agroforestry (RD), and a primary rainforest (RF). The results showed that the SQI value of the RM decreased by 15.50% compared to the RF, with a significant degree of soil nutrient loss (18.90%). This indicates that monocultural rubber cultivation is causing land degradation to some extent. However, the SQI was significantly enhanced by rubber-based agroforestry practices (25.30% by RT and 33.10% by RD) compared to the RM, suggesting that polyculture practices are suitable to recover the soil quality in degraded agricultural lands. Moreover, the chemical parameters contributed more to the SQI than did the physical parameters, indicating that nutrient management is important in soil quality recovery. Overall, our results suggest that agroforestry should be preferred over monoculture in the rubber plantations for sustainable land management in tropical China.
