There is a limited number of studies analyzing the molecular and biochemical processes regulating the metabolism of the maturation of Cocos nucifera L. zygotic embryos. Our research focused on the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolic pathways occurring at three developmental stages of embryos from the Mexican Pacific tall (MPT) and the Yucatan green dwarf (YGD) cultivars. We used the TMT-synchronous precursor selection (SPS)-MS3 strategy to analyze the dynamics of proteomes from both embryos; 1044 and 540 proteins were determined for the MPT and YGD, respectively. A comparison of the differentially accumulated proteins (DAPs) revealed that the biological processes (BP) enriched in the MPT embryo included the glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism along with fatty acid degradation, while in YGD, the nitrogen metabolism and pentose phosphate pathway were the most enriched BPs. Findings suggest that the MPT embryos use fatty acids to sustain a higher glycolytic/gluconeogenic metabolism than the YGD embryos. Moreover, the YGD proteome was enriched with proteins associated with biotic or abiotic stresses, e.g., peroxidase and catalase. The goal of this study was to highlight the differences in the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolic pathways during the maturation of coconut YGD and MPT zygotic embryos.

RÉSUMÉ

In this chapter, we report advances in tissue culture applied to Passiflora. We present reproducible protocols for somatic embryogenesis, endosperm-derived triploid production, and genetic transformation for such species knowledge generated by our research team and collaborators in the last 20 years. Our research group has pioneered the work on passion fruit somatic embryogenesis, and we directed efforts to characterize several aspects of this morphogenic pathway. Furthermore, we expanded the possibilities of understanding the molecular mechanism related to developmental phase transitions of Passiflora edulis Sims. and P. cincinnata Mast., and a transformation protocol is presented for the overexpression of microRNA156.

Ananas ananassoides (Baker) L.B.Sm. is a wild pineapple, commonly found in the savannas. This study aimed to describe the morpho-anatomy and histochemistry of its seed. The observations were made in the longitudinal and transverse sections, using an optical microscope. The cell arrangement in the seed coat, ripples in the integument, the ratio of embryo size and endosperm amount, and the number of strata in the aleurone layer are anatomical characteristics that may contribute to distinguishing this species. The starch in the endosperm, lipids and proteins in the embryo, constitute the seed's main nutritional reserves. The homogeneous embryo and phenolic compounds present in the seed coat and in the aleurone layer possibly contribute to the dormancy in this species. This study presents information relevant to the taxonomy and physiology of A. ananassoides, which represents contributions to the global knowledge of this species with a high potential as ornamental.


Ananas ananassoides (Baker) L.B.Sm. é um abacaxi silvestre, comumente encontrado nas savanas. Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever a morfoanatomia e histoquímica de sua semente. As observações foram feitas nos cortes longitudinais e transversais, em microscópio óptico. O arranjo celular no tegumento, as ondulações no tegumento, a relação entre o tamanho do embrião e a quantidade de endosperma, e o número de estratos na camada de aleurona são características anatômicas que podem contribuir para a distinção dessa espécie. O amido do endosperma e os lipídios e proteínas do embrião constituem as principais reservas nutricionais da semente. O embrião homogêneo e os compostos fenólicos presentes no tegumento e na camada de aleurona possivelmente contribuem para a dormência nessa espécie. Este estudo apresenta informações relevantes para a taxonomia e fisiologia de A. ananassoides, sendo contribuições valiosas para o conhecimento global dessa espécie com alto potencial ornamental.

Cocos nucifera L. is a crop grown in the humid tropics. It is grouped into two classes of varieties: dwarf and tall; regardless of the variety, the endosperm of the coconut accumulates carbohydrates in the early stages of maturation and fatty acids in the later stages, although the biochemical factors that determine such behavior remain unknown. We used tandem mass tagging with synchronous precursor selection (TMT-SPS-MS3) to analyze the proteomes of solid endosperms from Yucatan green dwarf (YGD) and Mexican pacific tall (MPT) coconut cultivars. The analysis was conducted at immature, intermediate, and mature development stages to better understand the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms. Proteomic analyses showed 244 proteins in YGD and 347 in MPT; from these, 155 proteins were shared between both cultivars. Furthermore, the proteomes related to glycolysis, photosynthesis, and gluconeogenesis, and those associated with the biosynthesis and elongation of fatty acids, were up-accumulated in the solid endosperm of MPT, while in YGD, they were down-accumulated. These results support that carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolisms differ among the developmental stages of the solid endosperm and between the dwarf and tall cultivars. This is the first proteomics study comparing different stages of maturity in two contrasting coconut cultivars and may help in understanding the maturity process in other palms.

BACKGROUND: Andean purple maize (APM) is an ancient crop widely used as a natural coloring in traditional Peruvian cuisine. However, it has been little explored within the food industry. The present study assessed how APM impacts on techno-functional properties and sensory acceptance of breakfast cereals. Extruded samples formulated with 100, 75, 50, and 25% APM, and complemented with yellow corn grits (YCG), were analyzed for their techno-functional and sensory properties. RESULTS: Increases in bulk density, as well as reduction in the expantion and porosity were observated for extrudates containing ≥ 50% APM, accompanied by an increase in purple color intensity. Increase in milk absorption index, reduction in milk solubility index and decrease in cereal hardness with increase in APM were also observed. Despite this, APM extented the cereal bowl-life. High sensory scores of overall liking (6) and color (7) were obtained for extruded formulations containing ≥ 50% APM and low values for extrudates with 25% APM. Aroma, flavor, and texture scores did not present significant differences. CONCLUSION: APM is an ingredient with the potential to be used to produce breakfast cereals since it improves their techno-functional characteristics and sensory acceptance, at the same time, it leads to the production of healthy, nutritious, and sustainable food. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of corn hybrid and processing methods on intake and digestibility of nutrients, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites of steers fed no-forage finishing diets. Four ruminally fistulated Nellore castrated steers (502 ± 15 kg initial body weight) were distributed in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of two corn hybrids (semi-dent and flint) and two processing methods (dry milled and high moisture grain). Interactions of hybrid and processing methods were observed on intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP), as well as on digestibility of DM and CP, rumen pH and ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3 ). There was no interaction between hybrid and processing for the volatile fatty acids (VFA) total, acetate (C2), propionate (C3), isobutyric (iC4) and valeric (nC5) concentrations. VFA total concentration shown an average of 103.4 mmol/L. The C2 and C3 concentrations had no effect of the hybrid or processing with averages of 58.7 mmol/L for C2, and 31.3 mmol/l for C3. There was an effect of the processing method on starch consumption and fecal pH, the highest values were observed in grains with high moisture content. Starch digestibility was 0.89 g/g in dry milled and 0.96 g/g in high moisture corn. The greatest digestibility of starch in high moisture corn, irrespective of the corn hybrid, provided evidence of an increase in the energy supply, which may improve the feed efficiency and growth performance of cattle fed no-roughage finishing diets.

Studies on the germination and establishment of plants are key pieces to understanding the reproductive success of plants. This work aimed to describe in vitro germination and reserve mobilization in the bromeliad Vriesea friburgensis through morphological, histochemical, and biochemical analysis. The conditions used in this study for the in vitro germination are adequate. From the third day of in vitro inoculation, a uniform germination of 98% was obtained, exhibiting a high physiological quality of the seeds and a high potential to produce seedlings (94%). There is early reserve mobilization, which began in the imbibition phase. The accumulated reserves in the endosperm cytoplasm are degraded by hydrolytic enzymes provided by the aleurone layer. It is possible that compounds in the cell walls of the endosperm contribute to a lesser extent in mobilization. Additionally, it was observed that starch accumulation in the cotyledon increases when the seedling has formed. Results from this study provide insights for future studies on ecology, seed technology, and conservation in this species. This study contributes to the limited knowledge of the dynamics of reserves during germination and seedling establishment in Bromeliaceae. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study with this approach in the genus Vriesea.


Estudos sobre germinação e estabelecimento de plantas são peças-chave para entender o sucesso reprodutivo das plantas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a germinação in vitro e a mobilização de reservas na bromélia Vriesea friburgensis por meio de análises morfológicas, histoquímicas e bioquímicas. As condições utilizadas neste estudo para a germinação in vitro são adequadas. A partir do terceiro dia de inoculação in vitro, obteve-se germinação uniforme de 98%, apresentando alta qualidade fisiológica das sementes e alto potencial de produção de plântulas (94%). Há uma mobilização precoce de reservas, iniciada na fase de embebição. As reservas acumuladas no citoplasma do endosperma são degradadas por enzimas hidrolíticas fornecidas pela camada de aleurona. É possível que compostos nas paredes celulares do endosperma contribuam em menor grau na mobilização. Além disso, observou-se que o acúmulo de amido no cotilédone aumenta com a formação da plântula. Os resultados deste estudo fornecem informações para estudos futuros sobre ecologia, tecnologia de sementes e conservação desta espécie. Este estudo contribui para o conhecimento limitado da dinâmica das reservas durante a germinação e estabelecimento de plântulas em Bromeliaceae. Até onde sabemos, este é o primeiro estudo com esta abordagem no gênero Vriesea.

The chayote fruit is a nontraditional vegetable belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. The fruit has an endocarpic recalcitrant seed that emerges postharvest, drastically shortening its shelf life. In this study, the changes during fruit and seed development before and after harvest (ah) are reported. Additionally, in order to investigate how growth regulators (GRs) affect seed germination, 2-cloroethylphosphonic acid (CPA) (200 µL L-1), gibberellic acid (GA3) (100 and 200 mg L-1), auxin (2,4-D) (0.5 and 1.0 mM), and abscisic acid (ABA) (0.5 and 1.0 mM) were applied after harvest. The results showed that the chayote fruit reached horticultural maturity at 21 days after anthesis, with a sigmoid trend: phase I featured slow growth and high transpiration; in phase II, growth was accelerated and accumulation of endosperm was observed; and in phase III, both growth rate and transpiration were reduced, soluble sugars increased, and the seed showed 25% cotyledon development. At day 13 ah, CPA, GA3, and 2,4-D (0.5 mM) increased seed germination, with values between 10 and 15 mm of the embryonary axis, and the treatments with 2,4-D (1 mM) and ABA (0.5 and 1.0 mM) retarded their growth (2-6 mm). This research allowed us to reveal the phenological phases and the shelf life of the chayote fruit, as well as the results of possible postharvest treatment with GRs; our results suggest that strategies to delay viviparism and prolong the shelf life of the fruit should be applied before 10 days ah, when the embryonic axis of the seed has not developed.

Maize starch is an important carbohydrate source in human diet, and its digestion contributes to the postprandial blood glucose level. This article describes in vitro starch digestibility and its relation to endosperm hardness and composition in cooked maize flours. Starch digestion and estimated glycemic index (GI) were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in hard endosperm genotypes (65.1 and 77.3, respectively) than in soft ones (70.7 and 80.7, respectively), and they were negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with specific zein concentrations (total zeins, Z1, Z2, and C1, E, and F zeins). Cooking with sodium sulfite significantly (p < 0.001) increased starch hydrolysis in all genotypes (∼13%), evidencing the impact of disulfide bonds on this attribute. Explored amylose:starch ratios did not impact starch digestibility. Regardless of hardness, fine grinding significantly (p < 0.001) increased total starch digestibility in >30%. Our results focus on specific kernel physicochemical traits for developing maize food products with lower starch digestibility and GI.

Asparagaceae's large embryo sacs display a central cell nucleus polarized toward the chalaza, which means the sperm nucleus that fuses with it during double fertilization migrates an atypical long distance before karyogamy. Because of the size and inverted polarity of the central cell in Asparagaceae, we hypothesize that the second fertilization process is supported by an F-actin machinery different from the short-range F-actin structures observed in Arabidopsis and other plant models. Here, we analyzed the F-actin dynamics of Agave inaequidens, a classical Asparagaceae, before, during, and after the central cell fertilization. Several parallel F-actin cables, spanning from the central cell nucleus to the micropylar pole, and enclosing the vacuole, were observed. As fertilization progressed, a thick F-actin mega-cable traversing the vacuole appeared, connecting the central cell nucleus with the micropylar pole near the egg cell. This mega-cable wrapped the sperm nucleus in transit to fuse with the central cell nucleus. Once karyogamy finished, and the endosperm started to develop, the mega-cable disassembled, but new F-actin structures formed. These observations suggest that Asparagaceae, and probably other plant species with similar embryo sacs, evolved an F-actin machinery specifically adapted to support the migration of the fertilizing sperm nucleus within a large-sized and polarity-inverted central cell.

Most seeds store reserves, which mobilization after germination is complex and diversified among plant species. Information on the reserve mobilization in recalcitrant seeds (i.e., intolerant to desiccation) is scarce. The aim of this work was to characterize the dynamics of reserve mobilization and the degradation pattern of the endospermic cell walls in the recalcitrant seeds of the neotropical palm Mauritia flexuosa. Biometric, anatomical, histochemical, ultrastructural and immunocytochemistry assessments were performed in the endosperm and haustorium (structure of the seedling involved in reserve mobilization), during germination and throughout seedling development. Endo-ß-mannanase activity was assessed. The main reserves stored in the seeds are mucilage in the living protoplast and, mainly, heteromannans in the thick cell walls of the endosperm cells. The reserve mobilization extends for about 180 days, in four phases. During germination, the embryonic reserves are catabolized, which induces the mobilization of the endosperm by establishing the flow of water and carrying substances to the haustorium. After germination, the cells of the endosperm actively control the process of their degradation, which results in the formation of the digestion zone. The growth of the haustorium promotes the crushing of endospermic cells and facilitates the entry of substances via the apoplastic route. The pattern of degradation of endospermic cells involves three phases: 1) mobilization of the vacuolar content by symplastic route; 2) increased vacuole turgor pressure, directing the content of the cytoplasm to the cell walls; 3) degradation of cell walls.

Today, there is a constant search for cultivars with superior performance for several traits of interest in the case of popcorn, yield and popping expansion. On this basis, this project proposes to characterize progenies of popcorn with different values ​​of expansion capacity regarding chemical composition and micromorphology. Kernels from the fifth cycle (C5) of intrapopulation recurrent selection were evaluated. The progenies were selected based on the popping expansion volume of their kernels. The kernels were quantified for amylose and analyzed for starch granule arrangement and pericarp thickness by scanning electron microscopy. Progenies with low popping expansion volume (0 and 7 mL g-1) showed amylose contents of 21.24 and 20.18%, respectively; a less compact endosperm, with individual starch granules interspaced with empty spaces; and pericarp thickness between 40.94 and 38.99 µm, respectively. By contrast, progenies with high popping expansion volume (30 and 35 mL g-1) showed amylose contents of 23.92 and 26.10%; a vitreous endosperm; more-compact starch granules without empty spaces in between; and pericarp thickness between 107.66 and 107.84 µm. Progenies with higher popping expansion volume exhibited a thicker pericarp, a high amylose percentage and a more-compact endosperm, whereas those with the lower expansion volumes showed a thinner pericarp, a lower amylose percentage and individual starch granules.(AU)

Hoje, existe uma constante busca por cultivares com desempenho superior para os diversos caracteres de interesse, no caso da pipoca, produtividade e capacidade de expansão. O trabalho propõe caracterizar progênies de milho-pipoca com diferentes valores de capacidade de expansão quanto à composição química e micromorfologia. Foram estudados grãos do quinto ciclo (C5) de seleção recorrente intrapopulacional. As progênies foram selecionadas com base nos valores de capacidade de expansão de seus grãos. Os grãos foram quantificados para amilose e analisados quanto ao arranjo dos grânulos de amido e espessura do pericarpo por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Progênies com baixa capacidade de expansão (0 e 7 mL g-1) apresentaram teor de amilose de 21,24 e 20,18% respectivamente; endosperma menos compacto, com grânulos de amido individualizados e intercalados com espaços vazios; e espessura do pericarpo medindo entre 40,94 e 38,99 µm, respectivamente. Helosis cayennensis (Balanophoraceae s.str.) is a holoparasite characterised by aberrant vegetative bodies and tiny, reduced unisexual flowers. Here, we analysed the development of female flowers to elucidate their morpho-anatomy and the historical controversy on embryo sac formation. We also studied the developmental origin of inflorescences and the ontogeny of fruits, embryo and endosperm and discussed in a phylogenetic framework. Inflorescences were analysed by optical, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Inflorescences of H. cayennensis arise endogenously. Female flowers lack perianth organs, thus only consist of the ovary, two styles and stigmata. Ovules are undifferentiated; two megaspore mother cells develop inside a nucellar complex. The female gametophyte, named Helosis-type, is a bisporic four-celled embryo sac, provided with a typical egg apparatus and a uni-nucleated central cell. Fertilization was not observed, yet a few-celled embryo and cellular endosperm developed. In sum, results confirm that, among Santalales holoparasites, Helosis is intermediate in the reduction series of its floral organs. Although perianth absence best supports the Balanophoraceae s.str. clade, our literature survey on female flower developmental data across Balanophoraceae s.l. highlights the many gaps that need to be filled to really understand these features in the light of new phylogenetic relationships.

Calcium is a secondary messenger that regulates and coordinates the cellular responses to environmental cues. Despite calcium being a key player during fertilization in plants, little is known about its role during the development of the endosperm. For this reason, the distribution, abundance, and dynamics of cytosolic calcium during the first stages of endosperm development of Agave tequilana and Agave salmiana were analyzed. Cytosolic calcium and actin filaments detected in the embryo sacs of Agave tequilana and A. salmiana revealed that they play an important role during the division and nuclear migration of the endosperm. After fertilization, a relatively high concentration of cytosolic calcium was located in the primary nucleus of the endosperm, as well as around migrating nuclei during the development of the endosperm. Cytosolic calcium participates actively during the first mitosis of the endosperm mother cell and interacts with the actin filaments that generate the motor forces during the migration of the nuclei through the large cytoplasm of the central cell.

Brazil is one of the world's largest corn producers and is a leader in exportation. Due to intense globalization, corn may be commercialized worldwide and the issue concerning the safety of corn-based products has become a topic of widespread international interest. Dietary exposure evaluation is a relevant criterion for mycotoxin risk assessment. Thus, human exposure to fumonisins were assessed for corn grain and its derivatives (endosperm, cornmeal, and grits; n = 320) sampled from one of the large-scale corn processing plants in Brazil. The total probable daily intake (PDI) for fumonisins in Brazil was 96.9 ng kg-1 body weight day-1, which corresponds to 5% of the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) of 2000 ng kg-1 b.w. day-1 for fumonisins. In countries that import Brazilian corn, the total PDI is lower in European countries (from 35.7 to 177 ng kg-1 b.w. day-1) and higher in Angola (1553 ng kg-1 b.w. day-1). Taking into account that dietary exposure in populations in Brazil and importing countries was low, the corn-based products were safe for human consumption regarding fumonisins, even for regions with high corn consumption.

The seeds of Annona macroprophyllata Donn. Sm. contain idioblasts with toxic acetogenins, including laherradurin and rolliniastatin-2, in relatively high proportions. Both metabolites are cataloged as potent insecticides for several species, even so, the wasp Bephratelloides cubensis Ashmead fulfills almost its entire life cycle inside the seeds of this and other annonaceous species, to such a degree, that they constitute a strong selection pressure. In order to document the chemical relationship between the two species, it is reported for the first time in this paper the presence of idioblasts and acetogenins during the ontogenic development of the seeds of A. macroprophyllata, and contrasted with the development of B. cubensis. The results indicate that idioblasts with laherradurin and rolliniastatin-2 acetogenins are formed in the middle stages of the endospermic development, also that both acetogenins are biosynthesized simultaneously, and that their proportion is dependent on the degree of development. The acetogenins are present in high amounts that suppose a sufficient toxic barrier and, in this case, laherradurin is the most abundant (> 1000 µg g dry weight-1). The wasp B. cubensis only emerges from the seeds to copulate and returns for oviposition; its larval phase coincides with the appearance of acetogenins, so it feeds on the acetogenic endosperm. The absence of acetogenins in the tissues and excreta of the insect supposes a metabolization of the molecules, which would explain the tolerance to its toxicity.

RESUMEN El endospermo de semilla de tara (EST) y polvo de las hojas de Agave americana (HAA) fueron evaluados como nuevas fuentes de fibra dietética teniendo como referencia al salvado de trigo (ST). Mediante experimentos in vitro se determinaron las propiedades funcionales y con experimentos in vivo, en ratas Holtzman, los efectos fisiológicos de las dietas alimentadas con 6% de fuente de fibra. El EST tuvo 32,2% de solubilidad; 45,0 g/g de capacidad de absorción; 47,9 g/g retención de agua y 46 ml/g de hinchamiento; valores significativamente superior al ST (p< 0,01). En cambio, el HAA presentó 6,38 g/g de capacidad de adsorción del aceite respecto al 5,27 del ST (p< 0,01). La dieta con EST, tuvieron 8,76% de grasa fecal, valor que supera al ST (p< 0,01). Sin embargo, no hubo efecto sobre el peso corporal de las ratas. El HAA incrementó el volumen fecal y redujo de 14,9 a 10,4 h el tiempo de tránsito intestinal (p< 0,01). El endospermo de semilla de tara, retiene la grasa de la dieta y la elimina a través de las heces; en cambio, el polvo de las hojas de Agave americana, reduce el tiempo de tránsito intestinal.


ABSTRACT The endosperm of tara seeds (EST) and powder from the leaves of Agave americana (HAA) were evaluated as new sources of dietary fiber, using wheat bran (ST) as a reference. In vitro experiments were carried out to determine functional properties and in vivo experiments were used to determine the physiological effects of fed Holtzman rats with diets with 6% of each fiber source. Endosperm of tara had 32.2% solubility, 45.0 and 47.9 g/g absorption and water retention capacity, respectively, and 46 ml/g swelling, values significantly higher than wheat bran (p< 0.01). On the other hand, Agave had higher adsorption capacity of oil than wheat bran (6.38 g/g vs. 5.27 g/g; p< 0.01). Diets with endosperm of tara, were 8.76% of fecal fat, a value that exceeded that of wheat bran (p< 0.01); however, there was no effect on body weight of the rats. Agave increased fecal volume and reduced (p< 0.01) intestinal transit time from 14.9 to 10.4 h. Endosperm of tara retained and eliminated fat from the diet through the feces; on the other hand, the powder of Agave leaves reduced intestinal transit time.

The endosperm is a transitory structure involved in proper embryo elongation. The cell walls of mature seed endosperm are generally composed of a uniform distribution of cellulose, unesterified homogalacturonans, and arabinans. Recent studies suggest that changes in cell wall properties during endosperm development could be related to embryo growth. The degree of methyl esterification of homogalacturonans may be involved in this endosperm tissue remodelling. The relevance of the degree of homogalacturonan methyl esterification during seed development was determined by immunohistochemical analyses using a panel of probes with specificity for homogalaturonans with different degrees of methyl esterification. Low-esterified and un-esterified homogalacturonans were abundant in endosperm cells during embryo bending and were also detected in mature embryos. BIDXII (BDX) could be involved in seed development, because bdx-1 mutants had misshapen embryos. The methyl esterification pattern described for WT seeds was different during bdx-1 seed development; un-esterified homogalacturonans were scarcely present in the cell walls of endosperm in bending embryos and mature seeds. Our results suggested that the degree of methyl esterification of homogalacturonans in the endosperm cell wall may be involved in proper embryo development.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The plant fossil record for the neotropics is still sparse and temporally discontinuous. The location and description of new fossil material are fundamental for understanding evolutionary and biogeographic patterns of lineages. A new fossil record of Passifloraceae from the late Eocene of Colombia is described in this study. METHODS: Plant fossils were collected from a new locality from the Eocene Esmeraldas Formation. Eighteen fossil seeds were selected, described, and compared with fossil and extant angiosperm seeds based on the literature and herbarium collections. Taxonomic affinities of the fossil seeds within Passifloraceae s.l. were evaluated by comparing morphological characters of the seeds in a phylogenetic context. Stratigraphic information associated with the fossil locality was used to interpret the environment and taphonomic processes associated with fossil deposition. KEY RESULTS: A new seed fossil genus and species, Passifloroidesperma sogamosense gen. and sp. nov., is described and associated with the subfamily Passifloroideae based on the presence of a foveolate seed surface, ruminate endosperm, and a seed coat with prismatic palisade cells. The depositional environment of the locality is described as a floodplain associated with river channels. CONCLUSIONS: A detailed review of the Passifloraceae fossil record indicates that P. sogamosense is the oldest confirmed record of Passifloraceae. Its late Eocene age provides a minimum age that can be used as a calibration point for the crown Passifloroideae node in future dating analyses that together with its neotropical geographic location can shed light on the origin and diversification of the subfamily.
