The anaerobic acid production experiments were conducted with the pretreated kitchen waste under pH adjustment. The results showed that pH 8 was considered to be the most suitable condition for acid production, especially for the formation of acetic acid and propionic acid. The average value of total volatile fatty acid at pH 8 was 8814 mg COD/L, 1.5 times of that under blank condition. The average yield of acetic acid and propionic acid was 3302 mg COD/L and 2891 mg COD/L, respectively. The activities of key functional enzymes such as phosphotransacetylase, acetokinase, oxaloacetate transcarboxylase and succinyl-coA transferase were all enhanced. To further explore the regulatory mechanisms within the system, the distribution of microorganisms at different levels in the fermentation system was obtained by microbial sequencing, results indicating that the relative abundances of Clostridiales, Bacteroidales, Chloroflexi, Clostridium, Bacteroidetes and Propionibacteriales, which were great contributors for the hydrolysis and acidification, increased rapidly at pH 8 compared with the blank group. Besides, the proportion of genes encoding key enzymes was generally increased, which further verified the mechanism of hydrolytic acidification and acetic acid production of organic matter under pH regulation.

Increasing nitrogen and phosphorus discharge and decreasing sediment input have made silicon (Si) a limiting element for diatoms in estuaries. Disturbances in nutrient structure and salinity fluctuation can greatly affect metal uptake by estuarine diatoms. However, the combined effects of Si and salinity on metal accumulation in these diatoms have not been evaluated. In this study, we aimed to investigate how salinity and Si availability combine to influence the adsorption of metals by a widely distributed diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Our data indicate that replete Si and low salinity in seawater can enhance cadmium and copper adsorption onto the diatom surface. At the single-cell level, surface potential was a dominant factor determining metal adsorption, while surface roughness also contributed to the higher metal loading capacity at lower salinities. Using a combination of non-invasive micro-test technology, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the diversity and abundance of the functional groups embedded in diatom cell walls vary with salinity and Si supply. This results in a change in the cell surface potential and transient metal influx. Our study provides novel mechanisms to explain the highly variable metal adsorption capacity of a model estuarine diatom.

As a new electrochemical technology, capacitive deionization (CDI) has been increasingly applied in environmental water treatment and seawater desalination. In this study, functional groups modified porous hollow carbon (HC) were synthesized as CDI electrode material for removing Na+ and Cl- in salty water. Results showed that the average diameter of HC was approximately 180 nm, and the infrared spectrum showed that its surface was successfully modified with sulfonic and amino groups, respectively. The sulfonic acid functionalized HC (HC-S) showed better electrochemical and desalting performance than the amino-functionalized HC (HCN), with a maximum Faradic capacity of 287.4 F/g and an adsorptive capacity of 112.97 mg/g for NaCl. Additionally, 92.63% capacity retention after 100 adsorption/desorption cycles demonstrates the excellent stability of HC-S. The main findings prove that HC-S is viable as an electrode material for desalination by high-performance CDI applications.

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) wastewater retaining low-carbon alcohols and acids are organic pollutants as a limiting factor for FTS industrialization. In this work, the structure-capacity relationships between alcohol-acid adsorption and surface species on graphene were reported, shedding light into their intricate interactions. The graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were synthesized via improved Hummers method with flake graphite (G). The physicochemical properties of samples were characterized via SEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, and Raman. The alcohol-acid adsorption behaviors and adsorption quantities on G, GO, and rGO were measured via theoretical and experimental method. It was revealed that the presence of COOH, C=O and CO species on graphene occupy the adsorption sites and increase the interactions of water with graphene, which are unfavorable for alcohol-acid adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption quantities of alcohols and acids grow in pace with carbon number. The monolayer adsorption occurs on graphene was verified via model fitting. rGO has the highest FTS modeling wastewater adsorption quantity (110 mg/g) due to the reduction of oxygen species. These novel findings provide a foundation for the alcohol-acid wastewater treatment, as well as the design and development of high-performance carbon-based adsorbent materials.

This study aimed to assess the impact of occlusal loading on secondary tooth eruption and to determine the extent to which altering the occlusal loading influences the magnitude of secondary eruption through an experimental rat model. The present sample consisted of 48 male Wistar rats. At the onset of the experiment, 24 rats were 4 weeks old (young rats) and 24 rats were 26 weeks old (adult). Within each age group, the rats were further divided into two equal subgroups (12 rats each), receiving either a soft- or hard-food diet for the 3-month duration of the experiment. The primary outcome was the tooth position changes relative to stable references in the coronal plane by evaluating the distance between the mandibular first molars and the inferior alveolar canal. Microcomputed tomography scans were taken from all rats at three standardized intervals over the 3-month study period. Descriptive statistics were calculated by age and diet over time, and the evolution of the outcomes were plotted by age and diet over time. Longitudinal data analysis via generalized estimating equations was performed to examine the effect of age, diet and time on the primary outcomes. Secondary tooth eruption was observed in all age groups (young and adult) regardless of diet consistency (soft or hard food). In young rats, the secondary eruption was greater in the animals fed a soft diet than those fed a hard diet. In adult rats, minimal difference in secondary tooth eruption were found between different diet consistencies. Occlusal loading influences secondary tooth eruption in teeth with an established occlusal contact. The quantity of eruption in growing rats is higher when occlusal loading is less, providing a certain amount of secondary tooth eruption occurs. This difference, however, is not evident in adult rats, at least during the given 3-month time frame.

This study was designed to evaluate and compare the usefulness of clear aligners and conventional appliances on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in pediatric population. Emphasis was placed on the relative benefits and implications of employing clear aligners owing to their escalating prevalence and acceptability. The study participants were divided into four groups: Clear Aligner Group (CAG), Conventional Appliance Group (ConAG), Malocclusion Control Group (MCG), and Normal Control Group (NCG). Parameters including sociodemographic indicators and daily routines were assessed. OHRQoL was evaluated via the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ). Psychological conditions were assessed through the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). Statistical differences were found between the four groups regarding CPQ subscales and total scores (p < 0.05). CAG was better than ConAG (p < 0.05) regarding the scores of functional limitations, emotional and social well-being, and total score, however no significant difference was discovered in the oral symptoms scores (p = 0.62). Moreover, all the treatment groups had worse OHRQoL compared to NCG (p < 0.05). Malocclusions and their treatments did not increase the psychological distress as per the DASS results. A novel correlation between the excessive tooth brushing and reduced OHRQoL was also observed (p < 0.05). The study herein emphasized the benefits of clear aligners in children and adolescents with OHRQoL. It was highlighted that the clear aligners had potential and were preferred for the adolescent orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate headache comorbidity in a cohort of patients with functional movement disorders by assessing the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and temporal relationship of headache with the onset of functional symptoms. BACKGROUND: Functional movement disorders are common and potentially treatable. Although headache is frequent in these patients, few studies have evaluated their headache features. METHODS: This observational cohort study included consecutive patients with functional movement disorders evaluated in our Functional Movement Disorders Unit between October 2021 and November 2022. Clinical and demographic features from clinical charts were reviewed, and patients completed a self-administered questionnaire designed by the authors that included headache characteristics, disease duration, treatments received, and the Headache Impact Test-6. Headache type was classified as per the Classification of Headache Disorders, third edition (ICHD-3). RESULTS: A total of 51 patients with functional movement disorders were included. Of those, 40 (78%) reported having recurrent headache. Headache intensity was moderate-severe in 33/40 (83%), and about two-thirds experienced headache >9 days/month. Disability secondary to headache was high (median [interquartile range] Headache Impact Test-6 score 62 [49-66]). Based on the ICHD-3, 23/40 (58%) of patients with headache met the criteria for migraine or probable migraine, 11/40 (27%) for tension-type headache, two of 40 (5%) for new daily persistent headache, and one of 40 (3%) for primary exercise headache, while three of 40 (7%) were unclassifiable. The onset of headache occurred before the functional movement disorder in 28/40 (70%), after the functional movement disorder in five of 40 (12%), and simultaneously in six of 40 (15%). In this last group, four of the six (67%) patients described a daily headache from the onset, and two met the criteria for new daily persistent headache. CONCLUSIONS: Headache is a frequent condition in patients with functional movement disorders and an additional burden of disability beyond their motor symptoms. We found that, besides migraine and tension-type headache, new daily persistent headache may be a comorbid phenotype in patients with functional movement disorders and should be further studied in larger prospective studies.

Damage to the posterior language area (PLA), or Wernicke's area causes cortical reorganization in the corresponding regions of the contralateral hemisphere. However, the details of reorganization within the ipsilateral hemisphere are not fully understood. In this context, direct electrical stimulation during awake surgery can provide valuable opportunities to investigate neuromodulation of the human brain in vivo, which is difficult through the non-invasive approaches. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of the cortical reorganization of the PLA within the ipsilateral hemisphere. Sixty-two patients with left hemispheric gliomas were divided into groups depending on whether the lesion extended to the PLA. All patients underwent direct cortical stimulation with a picture-naming task. We further performed functional connectivity analyses using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a subset of patients and calculated betweenness centrality, an index of the network importance of brain areas. During direct cortical stimulation, the regions showing positive (impaired) responses in the non-PLA group were localized mainly in the posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG), whereas those in the PLA group were widely distributed from the pSTG to the posterior supramarginal gyrus (pSMG). Notably, the percentage of positive responses in the pSMG was significantly higher in the PLA group (47%) than in the non-PLA group (8%). In network analyses of functional connectivity, the pSMG was identified as a hub region with high betweenness centrality in both the groups. These findings suggest that the language area can spread beyond the PLA to the pSMG, a hub region, in patients with lesion progression to the pSTG. The change in the pattern of the language area may be a compensatory mechanism to maintain efficient brain networks.

Phytoplankton functional groups have been increasingly utilized in elucidating and predicting the response of phytoplankton species to environmental conditions and seasonal succession in various aquatic systems including lakes, rivers and reservoirs. However, it is still unclear whether the trait-based functional classification can be applied to spring-type lakes. To understand the temporal and spatial characteristics of phytoplankton functional groups and their responses to environmental factors in spring-type urban lake in northern China, an investigation was conducted in Daming Lake from May 2020 to September 2021. The findings revealed the identification of 98 phytoplankton taxa belonging to 6 phyla, predominantly being Chlorophyta (39.8%), Bacillariophyta (35.7%) and Cyanophyta (15.3%). The dominant species were Microcystis sp., Merismopedia minima, Synedra acus and Scenedesmus quadricauda. These phytoplankton taxa were categorized into 21 functional groups, with 6 dominant functional groups (abbreviated as D, MP, P, J, Lo, and W1). Among them, the functional group D, primarily constituted by S. acus, exhibited absolute predominance. The seasonal succession sequence of the dominant functional groups was as follows: D/P/J/MP/ Lo →→ D/P/W1/MP/Lo/J → D/P/J → D/MP → D/P/MP. Throughout the investigation period, the trophic level index (TLI) ranged from 39.10 to 71.13, and the Q index was from 1.91 to 2.91, both indicating a medium health state for Daming Lake, which was consistent with the evaluation results of the diversity index. The results of redundancy analysis revealed that the main driving factors of phytoplankton FG biomass and composition were water temperature (WT), total nitrogen (TN), transparency (SD), TN:TP (N:P), redox potential (ORP), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) and pH. The dominance of the functional group D positively correlated with water temperature, TN, CODMn, pH and N:P but negatively correlated with SD. It was observed that functional groups and the Q index can objectively indicate the seasonal succession of phytoplankton and the water quality status of Daming Lake. Our discoveries have significant implications for the comprehension of the effects of urbanization on phytoplankton dynamics and for enhancing lake management practices to foster sustainable urban development.

Rodents can cause considerable changes in plant community composition. However, relationships between shifts in species dominance and plant functional traits caused by rodents have seldom been investigated, especially for belowground functional traits. In this study, a set of enclosures was constructed to analyze the effects of 10 years of Brandt's voles' activities on the defense strategies and dominant position changes of three gramineous plants (Leymus chinensis, Stipa krylovii, and Cleistogenes squarrosa) in Inner Mongolia. Here, we measured the dominance, biomass, and fourteen functional traits of three plants. The effects of Brandt's voles on dominance, biomass, and functional traits were analyzed, and then we explored the effect of functional traits on plant dominance by using the structural equation model. Results showed that long-term feeding by Brandt's voles resulted in a significant decrease in the dominance of L. chinensis and S. krylovii, whereas C. squarrosa was positively affected. The belowground biomass of L. chinensis and S. krylovii was higher in the vole treatment, which showed that they were increasing their escape characteristics. The leaf thickness of L. chinensis and the leaf C:N ratio of S. krylovii significantly increased, while the specific leaf area of C. squarrosa significantly decreased. All three gramineous showed increased resistance traits in response to Brandt's voles, which positively affected their dominance. Tolerance-related traits of S. krylovii significantly increased, with the increasing growth rate of root length contributing to enhancing its dominance. We highlight that selective feeding by rodents led to the selection of different defense strategies by three gramineous plants, and that changes in biomass allocation and functional traits in the different species affected plant dominance, driving changes in the plant communities.

Introduction: Ischemic stroke is a significant global health concern, with reperfusion therapies playing a vital role in patient management. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) has been suggested as a potential biomarker for assessing stroke severity and prognosis, however, the role of NSE in predicting long-term outcomes in patients undergoing reperfusion therapies is still scarce. Aim: To investigate the association between serum NSE levels at admission and 48 h after reperfusion therapies, and functional outcomes at 90 days in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: This study conducted a prospective cross-sectional analysis on consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients undergoing intravenous fibrinolysis and/or endovascular thrombectomy. Functional outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days post-stroke and two groups were defined according to having unfavorable (mRS3-6) or favorable (mRS0-2) outcome. Demographic, clinical, radiological, and laboratory data were collected, including NSE levels at admission and 48 h. Spearman's coefficient evaluated the correlation between analyzed variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed to verify which variables were independently associated with unfavorable outcome. Two ROC curves determined the cut-off points for NSE at admission and 48 h, being compared by Delong test. Results: Analysis of 79 patients undergoing reperfusion treatment following acute stroke revealed that patients with mRS 3-6 had higher NIHSS at admission (p < 0.0001), higher NIHSS at 24 h (p < 0.0001), and higher NSE levels at 48 h (p = 0.008) when compared to those with mRS 0-2. Optimal cut-off values for NSE0 (>14.2 ng/mL) and NSE48h (>26.3 ng/mL) were identified, showing associations with worse clinical outcomes. Adjusted analyses demonstrated that patients with NSE48h > 26.3 ng/mL had a 13.5 times higher risk of unfavorable outcome, while each unit increase in NIHSS24h score was associated with a 22% increase in unfavorable outcome. Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated similar predictive abilities of NSE levels at admission and 48 h (p = 0.298). Additionally, a strong positive correlation was observed between NSE48h levels and mRS at 90 days (r = 0.400 and p < 0.0001), suggesting that higher NSE levels indicate worse neurological disability post-stroke. Conclusion: Serum NSE levels at 48 h post-reperfusion therapies are associated with functional outcomes in ischemic stroke patients, serving as potential tool for patient long-term prognosis.

Background: Boswellin® Super is a standardized extract of Boswellia serrata Roxb gum resin, standardized to contain 30% 3-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid along with other ß-boswellic acids (BSE). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted at two doses of BSE to understand its safety and efficacy in supporting joint health and improving mobility and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Methods: Based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 105 newly diagnosed participants with degenerative hypertrophy OA were recruited and randomized into Placebo, BSE-150 mg or BSE-300 mg (n = 35 in each group) to receive either 150 mg or 300 mg BSE or a placebo tablet twice a day for 90 days. All the participants were evaluated for pain and physical function using the standard tools including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lequesne Functional Index (LFI), EuroQol- 5 Dimension (EQ-5D) quality of life, 6-min walk test at day 0, days 5, 30, 60 and 90 of treatment. Additionally, the circulating levels of inflammatory biomarkers, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were evaluated. Safety was evaluated by blood biochemical, hematological analysis, urinary analyses and by monitoring adverse events throughout the study. Results: Ninety-eight subjects completed the study. Improvements in pain scores were observed as early as 5 days after the start of the supplement in the BSE-150 and BSE-300 groups. By 90 days, the VAS pain score reduced by 45.3% and 61.9%, WOMAC- total score improved by 68.5% and 73.6% in the BSE-150 and BSE-300 groups respectively. WOMAC pain (70.2%, 73.9%, WOMAC stiffness (65.6%,68.9%), WOMAC function (68.8%,74.2%), LFI severity (50%,53.3%), decreased and EQ5D (56.9%, 62.9%) and distance walked in 6 minutes (21.2%, 21.9%) improved in the BSE-150 and BSE-300 groups in 90 days. Further, the levels of TNFα, hs-CRP, and IL-6 were found to decrease in the serum in BSE-supplemented participants. No significant adverse events were recorded during the study. Conclusion: The study confirms that Boswellin® Super can be used as a safe and effective supplement to support joint health and mobility in the management of osteoarthritis. Preschoolers frequently experience traumatic dental injuries, particularly during their two to four years of life. The majority of these injuries result in tooth avulsion because of the alveolar bone resiliency around the primary teeth. This study explains an instance of damage sustained during play that resulted in an early knockout of the primary incisor. Hence, a biogenic tooth-integrated space maintainer was created using the natural crown of the traumatized tooth, and the child was asked to come for a regular follow-up. This treatment may be viewed as a great alternative for natural aesthetic rehabilitation as it promotes speech development, improves oral cleanliness, restores aesthetics and masticatory function, and inhibits the development of aberrant tongue habits and malocclusions.

Design-based STEM learning is believed to be an effective cross-disciplinary strategy for promoting children's cognitive development. Yet, its impact on executive functions, particularly for disadvantaged children, still need to be explored. This study investigated the effects of short-term intensive design-based STEM learning on executive function among left-behind children. Sixty-one Grade 4 students from a school dedicated to the left-behind children in China were sampled and randomly assigned to an experimental group (10.70 ± 0.47 years old, n = 30) or a control group (10.77 ± 0.43 years old, n = 31). The experimental group underwent a two-week design-based STEM training program, while the control group participated in a 2-week STEM-related reading program. Both groups were assessed with the brain activation from 4 brain regions of interest using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioral measures during a Stroop task before and after the training. Analysis disclosed: (i) a significant within-group time effect in the experimental group, with posttest brain activation in Brodmann Area 10 and 46 being notably lower during neutral and word conditions; (ii) a significant between-group difference at posttest, with the experimental group showing considerably lower brain activation in Brodmann Area 10 and Brodmann Area 46 than the control group; and (iii) a significant task effect in brain activity among the three conditions of the Stroop task. These findings indicated that this STEM learning effectively enhanced executive function in left-behind children. The discrepancy between the non-significant differences in behavioral performance and the significant ones in brain activation implies a compensatory mechanism in brain activation. This study enriches current theories about the impact of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning on children's executive function development, providing biological evidence and valuable insights for educational curriculum design and assessment.

Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) is a rare form of enhanced memory in which individuals demonstrate an extraordinary ability to remember details of their personal lives with high levels of accuracy and vividness. Neuroimaging studies have identified brain regions - specifically, midline areas within the default network - associated with remembering events from one's past. Extending this research on the neural underpinnings of autobiographical memory, the present study utilizes graph theory analyses to compare functional brain connectivity in a cohort of HSAM (n = 12) and control participants (n = 29). We perform seed-based analysis in resting-state fMRI data to assess how specific cortical regions within the autobiographical memory network are differentially connected in HSAM individuals. Additionally, we apply a whole-brain connectivity analysis to identify differences in brain hub-network topology associated with enhanced autobiographical memory. Seed-based results show converging patterns of increased connectivity in HSAM across midline areas. Whole-brain analysis also reveals enhanced connectivity across medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex in HSAM individuals. Together, these results extend prior research, highlighting cortical hubs within the default network associated with enhanced autobiographical memory.

As vastly modified on secreted proteins, N-glycosylation is found on milk proteins and undergo dynamic changes during lactation, characterizing milk protein glycosylation would benefit the elucidation of glycosylation pattern differences between samples. However, their low abundance required specific enrichment. Herein, through rational design and controllable synthesis, we developed a novel multi-functional polymer for the isolation of protein glycosylation. It efficiently separated glycopeptides from complex background inferences with mutual efforts of hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC), metal ion affinity and ion exchange. By fine-tuning Ca2+ as regulators of aldehyde hyaluronic acid (HA) conformation, the grafting density of HA was remarkably improved. Moreover, grafting Ti4+ further enhanced the enrichment performance. Application of this material to characterize bovine milk and colostrum proteins yields 479 and 611 intact glycopeptides, respectively. Comparative analysis unraveled the distinct glycosylation pattern as well the different distribution of glycoprotein abundances between the two samples, offering insights for functional food development.

BACKGROUND: Septoria tritici blotch (STB), caused by the foliar fungus Zymoseptoria tritici, is one of the most damaging disease of wheat in Europe. Genetic resistance against this fungus relies on different types of resistance from non-host resistance (NHR) and host species specific resistance (HSSR) to host resistance mediated by quantitative trait loci (QTLs) or major resistance genes (Stb). Characterizing the diversity of theses resistances is of great importance for breeding wheat cultivars with efficient and durable resistance. While the functional mechanisms underlying these resistance types are not well understood, increasing piece of evidence suggest that fungus stomatal penetration and early establishment in the apoplast are both crucial for the outcome of some interactions between Z. tritici and plants. To validate and extend these previous observations, we conducted quantitative comparative phenotypical and cytological analyses of the infection process corresponding to 22 different interactions between plant species and Z. tritici isolates. These interactions included four major bread wheat Stb genes, four bread wheat accessions with contrasting quantitative resistance, two species resistant to Z. tritici isolates from bread wheat (HSSR) and four plant species resistant to all Z. tritici isolates (NHR). RESULTS: Infiltration of Z. tritici spores into plant leaves allowed the partial bypass of all bread wheat resistances and durum wheat resistance, but not resistances from other plants species. Quantitative comparative cytological analysis showed that in the non-grass plant Nicotiana benthamiana, Z. tritici was stopped before stomatal penetration. By contrast, in all resistant grass plants, Z. tritici was stopped, at least partly, during stomatal penetration. The intensity of this early plant control process varied depending on resistance types, quantitative resistances being the least effective. These analyses also demonstrated that Stb-mediated resistances, HSSR and NHR, but not quantitative resistances, relied on the strong growth inhibition of the few Z. tritici penetrating hyphae at their entry point in the sub-stomatal cavity. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to furnishing a robust quantitative cytological assessment system, our study uncovered three stopping patterns of Z. tritici by plant resistances. Stomatal resistance was found important for most resistances to Z. tritici, independently of its type (Stb, HSSR, NHR). These results provided a basis for the functional analysis of wheat resistance to Z. tritici and its improvement.

OBJECTIVES: Critical shoulder angle (CSA) and acromial index (AI) are two radiographic signs that can influence the risk of rotator cuff tears and the outcomes of repair. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of CSA and AI on massive cuff tears and on the functional outcomes after repair. The hypothesis was that CSA and AI will be higher in posterosuperior compared to anterosuperior tears. METHODS: CSA and AI were retrospectively measured on radiographs of patients who underwent repair of two rotator cuff tendons. Functional outcomes were evaluated using American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score and Simple Shoulder Test (SST) at least six months postoperatively. Patients were divided according to the tendons repaired into anterosuperior group and posterosuperior group. Radiographic measurements and functional outcomes were compared. Patients in the posterosuperior group were subdivided into low or high CSA (cut-off value= 39), and into low or high AI (cut-off value = 0.75). All available preoperative magnetic resonance images were reviewed and graded according to Goutallier classification. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the influence of CSA, AI and Goutallier grade on functional outcomes. RESULTS: Eighty six patients were included. Both CSA and AI were statistically significantly higher in the posterosuperior group (p=0.0143 and 0.0052 respectively). After a mean follow up of 33 months, ASES and SST were significantly better in patients with Goutallier grades 0-1 than grades>1 (multivariate p = 0.03 and 0.009 respectively). No statistically significant differences were found between low and high CSA and AI groups in terms of functional outcomes of the posterosuperior group after repair (multivariate p = 0.9). CONCLUSION: Higher critical shoulder angle and acromial index seem to increase the risk of posterosuperior more than anterosuperior rotator cuff tears. Neither of these radiographic parameters influenced the functional outcomes of massive posterosuperior tears after repair. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of the gut has been investigated in recent decades with a view to treating various gastro-intestinal motility disorders including, among others, gastric electrical stimulation to relieve nausea and vomiting associated with gastroparesis and sacral neuromodulation to treat fecal incontinence and/or constipation. Although their symptomatic efficacy has been ascertained by randomized controlled trials, their mechanisms of action are not fully understood. PURPOSE: This review summarizes the past year's literature on the mechanisms of action of gut electrical stimulation therapies, including their impact on the gut-brain axis.
