Exposure and resulting tissue concentrations of various elements from natural and anthropogenic sources are influenced by multiple factors, such as geographic location, age, diet, and metabolic rate, that can influence wildlife health. Essential and non-essential elements were assessed in lanugo and whole blood collected in 2019 from 102 Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) pups from two rookeries from the western and central Aleutian Islands: Agattu (WAI, n = 54) and Ulak Islands (CAI, n = 48). Rookery, sex, dorsal standard length, and trophic ecology (ẟ15N, ẟ13C values) effects on element concentration were evaluated. Significant differences in element concentrations of lanugo were exhibited across rookeries (p < 0.05), except for zinc (Zn). For example, higher mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were observed in WAI than CAI, while other elements were lower in WAI. Whole blood showed higher sulfur (S) and Se concentrations in CAI compared to WAI, while WAI had elevated strontium (Sr) and Hg concentrations relative to CAI. Trophic ecology significantly influenced most element concentrations, possibly due to regional variations in adult female feeding and food web dynamics. Interactions between elements were found in lanugo across both rookeries, with varying strengths. Whole blood displayed less pronounced yet consistent associations, with variable intensities. Essential elements sodium (Na), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) formed a distinct group whose interaction is crucial for nervous system function and muscle contraction. Another group comprised zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), phosphorous (P), S, and Se, which are known for indirectly interacting with enzyme function and metabolic pathways. Hg and Se formed a distinct group probably due to their known chemical interactions and physiological protective interactions.

The Wobbler mouse is an accepted model of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The spinal cord of clinically symptomatic animals (3-5 months old) shows vacuolar motoneuron degeneration, inflammation, and gliosis accompanied by motor impairment. However, data are not conclusive concerning pathological changes appearing early after birth. To answer this question, we used postnatal day (PND) 6 genotyped Wobbler pups to determine abnormalities of glia and neurons at this early age period in the spinal cord. We found astrogliosis, microgliosis with morphophenotypic changes pointing to active ameboid microglia, enhanced expression of the proinflammatory markers TLR4, NFkB, TNF, and inducible nitric oxide synthase. The astrocytic enzyme glutamine synthase and the glutamate-aspartate transporter GLAST were also reduced in PND 6 Wobbler pups, suggesting excitotoxicity due to impaired glutamate homeostasis. At the neuronal level, PND 6 Wobblers showed swollen soma, increased choline acetyltransferase immunofluorescence staining, and low expression of the neuronal nuclear antigen NeuN. However, vacuolated motoneurons, a typical signature of older clinically symptomatic Wobbler mice, were absent in the spinal cord of PND 6 Wobblers. The results suggest predominance of neuroinflammation and abnormalities of microglia and astrocytes at this early period of Wobbler life, accompanied by some neuronal changes. Data support the non-cell autonomous hypothesis of the Wobbler disorder, and bring useful information with regard to intervening molecular inflammatory mechanisms at the beginning stage of human motoneuron degenerative diseases.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the influence of a maternal and/or offspring high-fat diet (HFD) on the morphology of the offspring adipocytes and amount of food and energy consumption. The search was conducted through Pubmed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases up to October 31st, 2021. The outcomes were extracted and pooled as a standardized mean difference with random effect models. 5,004 articles were found in the databases. Of these, only 31 were selected for this systematic review and 21 were included in the meta-analysis. A large discrepancy in the percentage of fat composing the HFD (from 14% to 62% fat content) was observed. Considering the increase of adipose tissue by hyperplasia (cell number increase) and hypertrophy (cell size increase) in HFD models, the meta-analysis showed that excessive consumption of a maternal HFD influences the development of visceral white adipose tissue in offspring, related to adipocyte hypertrophy, regardless of their HFD or control diet consumption. Upon following a long-term HFD, hyperplasia was confirmed in the offspring. When analyzing the secondary outcome in terms of the amount of food and energy consumed, there was an increase of caloric intake in the offspring fed with HFD whose mothers consumed HFD. Furthermore, the adipocyte hypertrophy in different regions of the adipose tissue is related to the sex of the pups. Thus, the adipose tissue obesity phenotypes in offspring are programmed by maternal consumption of a high-fat diet, independent of postnatal diet.

Glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide, causes in mammals’ cellular mutagenesisand toxic effects at the embryonic, fetal, and placental levels, even at lowconcentrations. This study investigated in rats the effects of perinatal exposureto glyphosate-base herbicide on maternal behavior and the hypothalamic andstriatal levels of dopamine and serotonin. The pup’s physical and behavioraldevelopment were observed. Glyphosate-base herbicide (50 or 150 mg/kg, peros) was administered in dams during gestation (15º gestational day to 7ºlactation day. The female body weight was recorded throughout the pregnancyand lactation. The dams’ reproductive performance was observed at postnatalday 2, the open field behavior at postnatal day 5 and the maternal behavior atpostnatal day 6. At weaning, the dam’s hypothalamic and striatal levels ofdopamine and serotonin were measured. Maternal exposure to both glyphosatebase herbicide doses: i) had few effects on maternal body weight gain; ii)decreased the number and body weight of the pups; iii) impaired the maternalcare; iv) both doses decreased the activity of striatal and hypothalamic dopaminergic systems; v) 50 mg/kg increased and 150 mg/kg decreased theserotoninergic hypothalamic activity. In offspring, no effects on physicaldevelopment but a delay on reflex development. Conclusions: perinatal exposureto glyphosate-base herbicide decreased the maternal care by a reduced striataldopaminergic activity and delayed the pup’s reflex development.

Acute diarrhea in young dogs is among the main complaints described by tutors in veterinary services. Complications related to water and electrolyte imbalances due to intestinal alterations can compromise homeostasis in these pups, mainly due to dehydration. Consequently, they do not present a satisfactory clinical response and are exposed to the risk of early death. Among the different types of diarrhea, the infectious diarrhea due to viruses, bacteria, and parasites are particularly significant. Coccidia of the genus Isospora (Cystoisospora spp.) is an important intestinal pathogen that causes severe clinical manifestations in puppies. Since high parasitic loads render these puppies highly susceptible to opportunistic infections, coccidia infection may cause impaired corporal and cognitive development and even lead to death. Studies regarding this issue, particularly concerning clinical knowledge in neonatology, are scarce in veterinary medicine. Thus, in this study, we intend to discuss the enteric alterations and the most commonly used current diagnostic techniques, as well as to analyze effective therapeutic and prophylactic proposals.


As diarreias agudas em cães jovens estão entre as principais queixas descritas pelos tutores nos serviços veterinários. As complicações relacionadas aos desequilíbrios hídrico e eletrolítico decorrentes das alterações intestinais comprometem a homeostase destes filhotes, principalmente devido a desidratação, não apresentam resposta clínica satisfatória e ficam expostos ao risco de morte precoce. Dentre os diferentes tipos de diarreia, sobressaem as de origem infecciosa. Os agentes podem ser vírus, bactérias, fungos e parasitos. Entre estes últimos agentes, os coccídios do Gênero Isospora (Cystoisospora spp.) se destacam como patógenos intestinais que ocasionam manifestações clínicas graves em filhotes, pois elevadas cargas parasitárias propiciam condição de maior susceptibilidade à infecções oportunistas, podendo também prejudicar o desenvolvimento corporal e cognitivo e/ou até mesmo levar a morte do cão. Diante de tal temática, na medicina veterinária os estudos são escassos, principalmente quanto ao conhecimento clínico em neonatologia de tal modo tencionamos discutir a respeito das alterações entéricas, métodos de diagnóstico mais utilizados e atuais, bem como analisar as propostas terapêuticas e profiláticas efetivas.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Newborn infants are vulnerable to procedural stress and pain exposure on the first weeks of life that represents a critical period for the development of nociceptive, sensory, emotional, and social functions. We evaluated the nociceptive behavior of adult male and female rats that were submitted to nociceptive experience in the neonatal period and the maternal behavior in the postnatal period. METHODS: The animals were submitted to repetitive needle pricking from the second to the fifteenth postnatal day (PND 2-15). Maternal behavior and litter weight were evaluated during this period. Mechanical sensitivity to pain was assessed in offsprings during the adulthood by exposing them to inflammatory stimuli, including formalin test or the Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) injection followed by the electronic von Frey test at 0, 3, 6 and 24 h later. RESULTS: Maternal behavior and litter weight were not altered by pinprick stimuli during PND 2-15. Additionally, pinprick stimulation reduced the paw withdrawal threshold in CFA-injected animals compared to control. In the formalin test, there was a difference between the genders. Female rats are statically more sensitive to formalin stimulation and showed an increased licking time in both the first and second phases and increased number of flinches in second phase. CONCLUSIONS: Experiencing early life repetitive pain exposure increased inflammatory pain sensitivity in adult offspring rats and female rats are more sensitive to chemical stimulation. IMPLICATIONS: Future investigations of the mechanisms involved in this effect may contribute to the improvement of the understanding of inflammatory pain sensitivity differences.

This study investigated the effects of a maternal dyslipidaemic (DLP) diet on lipid metabolism, microbial counts in faeces and hepatic and intestinal morphology in rat offspring with respect to sex during different phases of life. Wistar rats (dams) were fed a control (CTL) or DLP during gestation and lactation. After weaning, CTL and DLP offspring were fed a standard diet. The effects of a maternal DLP on body composition, biochemical parameters, faecal microbiota and intestinal and hepatic histomorphometric characteristics in rat offspring were evaluated at 30 and 90 d of age. The DLP diet during gestation and lactation caused lower birth weight and a greater weight gain percentage at the end of the 90-d period in both male and female offspring. Female pups from DLP dams had higher liver fat levels compared with CTL (P≤0·001) at 90 d of age. Males from DLP dams had greater visceral fat weight and lower Lactobacillus spp. faecal counts at 90 d of age (P≤0·001) as well as lower faecal fat excretion (P≤0·05) and Bacteroides spp. faecal counts (P≤0·001) at 30 d of age when compared with pups from CTL dams. However, both dams and DLP pups showed damage to intestinal villi. A maternal DLP alters intestinal function and lipid metabolism in a sex-specific manner and is a potential predisposing factor for health complications in offspring from the juvenile period to the adult period.

PURPOSE: Lactobacillus plantarum Lp62 is a lactic acid bacteria strain that has been isolated from cocoa beans and exhibited probiotic potential. The influence of oral administration of L. plantarum Lp62 on the growth of rat's pups; on yield, cytokines and milk composition was studied. METHODS: Lactobacillus plantarum Lp62 is a lactic acid bacteria strain that has been isolated from cocoa beans. It was administered daily by gavage to Wistar rats (n = 8), from the 7th day before delivery and for 20 days during lactation, in a concentration of 1.44 × 109 CFU/rat. The dam and pups were weighed and milk was collected at 12th and 19th day for determination of protein, triglycerides, cholesterol and lactose by colorimetric assays. TGF-ß1 milk levels were analyzed by ELISA. The mammary glands of rats were removed for histological analysis. To detect statistical differences between the groups, tests of mean differences at a significance level of 5% was performed. RESULTS: Supplementation with L. plantarum L62 resulted in significant higher weight of pups (p < 0.05), with similar weight on dams (p > 0.05). The milk yield was not altered by L. plantarum treatment, but the levels of protein, triglycerides and cholesterol were increased (p < 0.05), with no difference in lactose concentration (p > 0.05). Levels of TGF-ß1 were higher in the milk of L. plantarum treatment (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The treatment of dams at the end of pregnancy and lactation with L. plantarum Lp62 increased nutritional content of milk, probably contributing to the higher weight of the pups. The higher levels of TGF-ß1 in the milk, could promote immune benefits to the pups. Further studies in this field are needed to prove the potential use of L. plantarum Lp62 as a probiotic.

As complicações relacionadas aos desequilíbrios hídrico e eletrolítico decorrentes das alterações intestinais comprometem a homeostase destes filhotes, principalmente devido a desidratação, não apresentam resposta clínica satisfatória e ficam expostos ao risco de morte precoce. Dentre os diferentes tipos de diarreia, sobressaem as de origem infecciosa. Os agentes podem ser vírus, bactérias, fungos e parasitos. Entre estes últimos agentes, os coccídios do Gênero Isospora (Cystoisospora spp.) se destacam como patógenos intestinais que ocasionam manifestações clínicas graves em filhotes, pois elevadas cargas parasitárias propiciam condição de maior susceptibilidade à infecções oportunistas, podendo também prejudicar o desenvolvimento corporal e cognitivo e/ou até mesmo levar a morte do cão. Diante de tal temática, na medicina veterinária os estudos são escassos, principalmente quanto ao conhecimento clínico em neonatologia de tal modo tencionamos discutir a respeito das alterações entéricas, métodos de diagnóstico mais utilizados e atuais, bem como analisar as propostas terapêuticas e profiláticas efetivas.

Maternal diet during lactation affects offspring metabolic health throughout life. Prolactin (PRL) is present in high quantities in maternal milk; however, the effects of milk PRL on the offspring remain poorly characterized. In this study, we evaluated whether feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) to rats during lactation alters PRL, both in the mother's serum and in milk, and whether this factor contributes to HFD-induced metabolic dysfunction in the offspring. Maternal HFD resulted in decreased PRL levels in milk (but not in serum), reduced mammary gland (MG) PRL receptor expression, and altered MG structure and function. Offspring from HFD-fed dams had increased body weight and adiposity, and developed fatty liver, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance at weaning. Increasing PRL levels in the HFD-fed mothers by subcutaneous osmotic minipumps releasing PRL normalized MG function and PRL levels in milk. Moreover, PRL treatment in HFD-fed mothers, or directly in their pups via oral PRL administration, increased liver STAT5 phosphorylation, reduced visceral adiposity, ameliorated fatty liver, and improved insulin sensitivity in offspring. Our results show that HFD impairs PRL actions during lactation to negatively affect MG physiology and directly impair offspring metabolism.-De los Ríos, E. INTRODUCTION: Maternal diet composition of fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation seems to modify the fetal programming, epigenetic pattern and offspring phenotype. AIM: Herein, we investigated the effects of maternal consumption of normal-fat diets with distinct lipid sources during pregnancy and lactation on the somatic development and proinflammatory status of 21-day-old rat offspring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On the first day of pregnancy, female Wistar rats were divided into four groups as follows: soybean oil (M-SO), lard (M-L), hydrogenated vegetable fat (M-HVF) and fish oil (M-FO). Diets were maintained during pregnancy and lactation. Male offspring constituted the SO, L, HVF and FO groups. Pups were weighed and measured weekly. Lipopolysaccharide serum concentration was determined. Tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 in the liver were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Liver gene expressions were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Protein expressions in the liver were analyzed by Western blotting. RESULTS: We observed an increase in body weight and adiposity in L and HVF groups. Moreover, HVF group showed an increase in the toll-like receptor 4 mRNA levels, IL10Rα and phosphorylated form of IκB kinase (IKK; p-IKKα+ß) protein expression. The FO group presented a decrease in body weight, relative weight of retroperitoneal adipose tissue, ADIPOR2 gene expression, lipopolysaccharide and p-IKKα+ß and phosphorylated form of nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NFκB) p50 (p-NFκB p50) protein expression. CONCLUSION: Summarily, whereas maternal intake of normal-fat diets based on L and HVF appear to affect the somatic development negatively, only early exposure to HVF impairs the pups' proinflammatory status. In contrast, maternal diets based on FO during pregnancy and lactation have been more beneficial to the adiposity and toll-like receptor 4 signaling pathway of the 21-day-old rat offspring, particularly when compared to L or HVF diets.

Pups have greater incentive value than males for rats during the postpartum estrus (PPE); a period when females are both maternally and sexually motivated. Mesolimbic dopaminergic system has been proposed as a general motivational circuit; however in the literature it has been more related to the control of the motivational aspects of maternal than sexual motivation of females. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of antagonizing dopaminergic neurotransmission of PPE females on their preference for pups over a male. To achieve this objective we tested PPE rats in a Y-maze with three-choice chambers (one containing eight pups, the other a male and the last one no stimulus) after the systemic administration of the dopaminergic antagonist haloperidol (0.0; 0.025 or 0.05 mg/kg). Furthermore, to determine if this dopaminergic antagonist differentially affects maternal and sexual motivations when pups and male are not competing, we evaluated the effect of haloperidol in the preference of females for pups vs. a non-receptive female and for a male vs. a non-receptive female. In the preference test for pups vs. male, both doses of haloperidol decreased the time that females spent in pups' chamber while increased the time that they spent in male's chamber, resulting in a lack of preference between both incentives. Besides, haloperidol reduced the effort -attempts to get access to the stimuli- made by the females to obtain the pups. Conversely, 0.05 mg/kg of haloperidol did not affect the preference for both incentives when they were confronted to a non-receptive female. Together, these results indicate that the dopaminergic activity mediates pups' preference over male during the PPE and point toward a more relevant role of this system in females' behavioral output when incentives are competing.

Previous cross-sectional studies showed that some patients with haemophilia A (HA) without inhibitor presented a pro-inflammatory profile during factor VIII (FVIII) replacement therapy. Furthermore, an anti-inflammatory/regulatory state was described in HA patients after inhibitor development. However, no study investigated the levels of these biomarkers before exposure to exogenous FVIII. This study investigated the immunological profile of previously untreated patients (PUPs) with HA in comparison with non-haemophiliac boys. A panel of chemokines and cytokines was evaluated in the plasma of 40 PUPs with HA and 47 healthy controls. The presence of microparticles was assessed in the plasma of 32 PUPs with HA and 47 healthy controls. PUPs with HA presented higher levels of CXCL8 (IL8), IL6, IL4, IL10, IL2, IL17A (IL17), and lower levels of CXCL10 (IP-10) and CCL2 (MCP-1) than the age-matched healthy controls (P < 0·05). We also observed higher levels of microparticles derived from endothelium, erythrocytes, platelets, leucocytes, neutrophils, and T lymphocytes in patients in comparison with controls (P < 0·05). Compared with controls, PUPs with HA presented a distinct immunological profile, characterized by a prominent pro-inflammatory status that appears to be regulated by IL4 and IL10.

This study investigated the toxicity of rats exposed to lead acetate (AcPb) during the second phase of brain development (8-12 days postnatal) in hematological and cerebral parameters. Moreover, the preventive effect of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was investigated. Pups were injected subcutaneously with saline (0.9% NaCl solution), ZnCl2 (27 mg/kg/day), NAC (5 mg/kg/day) or ZnCl2 plus NAC for 5 days (3rd-7th postnatal days), and with saline (0.9% NaCl solution) or AcPb (7 mg/kg/day) in the five subsequent days (8th-12th postnatal days). Animals were sacrificed 21 days after the last AcPb exposure. Pups exposed to AcPb presented inhibition of blood porphobilinogen-synthase (PBG-synthase) activity without changes in hemoglobin content. ZnCl2 pre-exposure partially prevented PBG-synthase inhibition. Regarding neurotoxicity biomarkers, animals exposed to AcPb presented a decrease in cerebrum acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and an increase in Pb accumulation in blood and cerebrum. These changes were prevented by pre-treatment with ZnCl2, NAC, and ZnCl2 plus NAC. AcPb exposure caused no alteration in behavioral tasks. In short, results show that AcPb inhibited the activity of two important enzymatic biomarkers up to 21 days after the end of the exposure. Moreover, ZnCl2 and NAC prevented the alterations induced by AcPb.

The main goals of this study were to classify dams according to the level of voluntary physical activity before breeding and during pregnancy/lactation and to evaluate the effects on growth trajectory and reflex ontogenesis of offspring. Voluntary physical activity was ranked by traveled distance, time and daily estimated calorie burned. Thirty-five female Wistar rats were classified as control (C, n=5), inactive (I, n=10), active (A, n=8) and very active (VA, n=12). During 30d before breeding, traveled distance, average speed, time and calorie burned were daily recorded for active and very active groups. Traveled distance was recorded each 2h every day of adaptation. Body weight, food intake and fasting glycemia were measured throughout the experiment. During lactation, litters were evaluated in terms of physical features and reflex ontogeny. VA showed a progressive increase in the traveled distance and time while A dams presented constant values. VA rats showed lower body weight and higher food intake. During pregnancy, both groups performed less than 1km/day. Pups from A and VA dams showed higher lateral-lateral axis of the skull, longitudinal axis, tail length, and anticipation of the pavilion and auditory canal opening, and erupting incisors. I, A and VA groups showed a delay of righting, cliff aversion and vibrissae placing reflexes. In conclusion, active maternal phenotype is established before breeding allowing mothers to fit ecological and influencing growth trajectory outcomes and reflex ontogeny of the offspring based on matrilineal experience.

During the stress hypo-responsive period, rat pups do not display fear responses toward adult males, yet they exhibit distress behavior in isolation. Since the mother modulates her offspring's affective development, we hypothesized that by altering the mother's behavior, a prolonged stressful situation would modify the ontogeny of the fear responses and distress behaviors in pups. Therefore, we repeatedly exposed the mother-litter dyad to different socially stressful stimuli and subsequently evaluated in 8-day-old pups their fear responses toward an anesthetized male, as well as their distress behavior in isolation. Our results show that repeated exposure to unfamiliar males and females, which altered maternal behavior by eliciting aggression in the mother, was associated with the precocious fear responses in pups, though without altering their distress behavior in isolation. We propose that the mother, as the principal mediator of environmental influences, provokes the precocious expression of fear in pups through alterations in her maternal behavior.

INTRODUÇÃO: Excesso de alimentação no início da vida pode modificar persistentemente consumo e peso corporal. Adoção de exercício físico é uma estratégia útil para evitar excessivo ganho de peso. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o crescimento corporal e a eficiência alimentar em ratos provenientes de ninhada reduzida no aleitamento. MÉTODOS: Ao terceiro dia de vida, ninhadas foram formadas com quatro (GN4) ou 10 animais (GN10), (n = 25). Ao desmame, ratos machos Wistar permaneceram em gaiolas individuais, e, aos 60 (± 2) dias foram subdivididos em sedentários (SED) e exercitados (NAT), formando quatro grupos: GN4SED, GN10SED, GN4-NAT e GN10NAT. Avaliou-se o peso, ganho de peso e taxa específica de ganho de peso, gordura epididimal, índices de massa corporal e Lee, consumo e eficiência alimentar, glicemia e lactemia. RESULTADOS: Aos 21 dias, o GN4 apresentava peso corporal 52 por cento acima do GN10 (P = 0,001). Contudo, aos 30 e 60 dias os pesos não diferiram. Ao final do período, GN10NAT demonstrou menor peso (356,82 ± 23,04) que GN10SED (409,28 ± 17,30). Mas GN4NAT possuía maior peso (417,85 ± 37,91) que GN4SED (413,69 ± 57,45) e GN10NAT. O GN4 exibiu elevada taxa de ganho de peso na lactação, mas, redução da mesma pós-desmame. Independente do tamanho da ninhada, a taxa de ganho de peso reduz com o aumento da idade. Ao final do período, glicemia, gordura epididimal total e relativa, e os índices de Lee e IMC não diferiram entre os grupos. Os valores de lactato antes e após o exercício condizem com esforço de intensidade moderada. Na periadolescência, GN4 apresentou menor ingestão de alimentos, mas sem diferenças na vida adulta. CONCLUSÃO: A redução da ninhada no aleitamento não alterou o peso corporal ou ingestão alimentar persistentemente. Entretanto, o protocolo de natação foi eficaz em reduzir o ganho de peso em animais controles, mas não naqueles de ninhada reduzida.


INTRODUCTION: Overfeeding in early life can persistently modify consumption and body weight. Adoption of exercise is one useful strategy to prevent excessive weight gain. OBJECTIVE: to assess body growth and feed efficiency in rats from reduced litters during lactation. METHODS: On day 3 of life, litters were formed with 4 (GN4) or 10 animals (GN10) (n = 25). When weaned, Wistar male rats were kept in individual cages and at day 60 (± 2) they were divided into sedentary (SED) and exercised (NAT), forming thus four groups: GN4SED; GN10SED; GN4NAT and GN10NAT. Assessment consisted of weight, weight gain and specific rate of weight gain, epididymal fat, Body Mass and Lee Indices, consumption and feed efficiency, blood glucose and lactemia. RESULTS: At day 21, GN4 had body weight 52 percent above GN10 (P = 0.001). However, at days 30 and 60, their weight was not different. At the end of the period, GN10NAT showed lower weight (356.82 ± 23.04) that GN10SED (409.28 ± 17.30), but GN4NAT was heavier (417.85 ± 37.91) than GN4SED (413.69 ± 57.45) and GN10NAT. GN4 presented higher rate of weight gain during lactation, but slower after weaning. Regardless of litter size, rate of weight gain reduces as age progresses. At the end of this period, blood glucose, total and relative epididymal fat, and Lee and BMI indices did not differ between groups. Pre and post-exercise lactate values are consistent with moderate effort. In periadolescence, GN4 showed lower food intake, but with no differences in adulthood. CONCLUSION: Reduced litter during lactation did not affect body weight or food intake persistently. However, the swimming protocol was effective in reducing weight gain in control animals, but not in animals from reduced litters.

Se evaluó la transmisión congénita de Trypanosoma cruzi en crías de ratas Wistar con infección aguda. Las ratas fueron inyectadas intraperitonealmente con 1,5x10(4) tripomastigotes metacíclicos de la cepa I/PAN/VE/00/PLANALTO linaje TcI. La parasitemia fue significativamente mayor (P<0,05) en las ratas infectadas preñadas (IP) que en las ratas infectadas vírgenes (IV). Las crías de las ratas IP a los 15, 30, 45 y 60 días de nacidas (dn) no mostraron tripanosomas circulantes. El ensayo ELISA reveló aumento progresivo de IgM anti-T. cruzi en el suero de 6 crías (24%) de las ratas IP entre los 15 y 60 dn. La IgG anti-T. cruzi disminuyó progresivamente en las crías de ratas IP y fueron negativos a los 60 dn. Cortes de corazón y músculo esquelético del 15% de las crías con 60 dn de las ratas IP mostraron antígeno de T. cruzi con PAP. ADN de T. cruzi fue detectado por PCR en el suero de 4 crías (16%) a los 60 dn de ratas IP. La presencia de anticuerpos IgM anti- T. cruzi y ADN del parásito en las crías de ratas con infección aguda, pueden ser considerados como un criterio de infección congénita en las crías sin parasitemia patente.


Congenital Trypanosoma cruzi transmission was evaluated in pups of Wistar rats with acute Chagas infection. The rats were injected intraperitoneally with 1.5 x 10(4) metacyclic tripomastigotes from the I/PAN/VE/00/PLANALTO strain TcI lineage. Parasitemia was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the pregnant infected rats (PI) than in the infected virgin rats (VI). The offspring of the PI rats at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after birth (ab) did not show circulating trypanosomes. An ELISA test revealed progressive increase of anti-T. cruzi IgM in the serum of pups (24%) of the PI rats between 15 and 60 days. Anti-T. cruzi IgM decreased progressively in the PI pups and became negative at 60 ab. Heart and skeletal muscle sections of 15% of the pups of the PI rats at 60 ab showed T. cruzi antigen with PAP. T. cruzi DNA was detected through PRC in the serum of 4 pups (16%) of PI rats at 60 ab. Presence of anti-T. cruzi IgM and parasite DNA in the pups of rats with acute infection can be considered as a criterion of congenital infection in pups without evident parasitemia.
