RÉSUMÉ

Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness and vision impairment worldwide, and visual field (VF) tests are essential for monitoring the conversion of glaucoma. While previous studies have primarily focused on using VF data at a single time point for glaucoma prediction, there has been limited exploration of longitudinal trajectories. Additionally, many deep learning techniques treat the time-to-glaucoma prediction as a binary classification problem (glaucoma Yes/No), resulting in the misclassification of some censored subjects into the nonglaucoma category and decreased power. To tackle these challenges, we propose and implement several deep-learning approaches that naturally incorporate temporal and spatial information from longitudinal VF data to predict time-to-glaucoma. When evaluated on the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) dataset, our proposed convolutional neural network (CNN)-long short-term memory (LSTM) emerged as the top-performing model among all those examined. Introduction: Fanconi anemia (FA) is a genomic instability disorder associated with congenital abnormalities, including short stature and the presence of central nervous system anomalies, especially in the hypothalamic-pituitary area. Thus, differences in pituitary size could associate with the short stature observed in these patients. Our aim was to evaluate whether central nervous system abnormalities and pituitary gland volume correlate with height and hormone deficiencies in these patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional exploratory study 21 patients diagnosed with FA between 2017 and 2022 in a Spanish Reference Center were investigated. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and pituitary volume calculated and corelated with height and other endocrine parameters. Results: The percentage of abnormalities in our series was 81%, with a small pituitary (pituitary volume less than 1 SD) being the most frequent, followed by Chiari malformation type 1. The median value of pituitary volume was -1.03 SD (IQR: -1.56, -0.36). Short stature was found in 66.7% [CI95% 43-85.4]. Total volume (mm3) increases significantly with age and in pubertal stages. There were no differences between volume SD and pubertal stage, or the presence of endocrine deficiencies. No correlations were found between pituitary volume and the presence of short stature. The intraclass correlation index (ICC) average for volume was 0.85 [CI95% 0.61-0.94] indicating a good-to-excellent correlation of measurements. Discussion: Central nervous system anomalies are part of the FA phenotype, the most frequent after pituitary hypoplasia being posterior fossa abnormalities, which may have clinical repercussions in the patient. It is therefore necessary to identify those who could be candidates for neurosurgical intervention. The size of the pituitary gland is smaller in these patients, but this does not seem to be related to hormone deficiency and short stature or exposure to a low dose of total body irradiation.

As a medicinal and edible homologous Chinese herb, Polygonatum sibiricum has been used as a primary ingredient in various functional and medicinal products. Damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier can lead to or worsen conditions such as type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Traditional Chinese medicine and its bioactive components can help prevent and manage these conditions by restoring the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. This review delves into the mode of action of P. sibiricum polysaccharide in disease prevention and management through the restoration of the intestinal barrier. Polysaccharide from P. sibiricum effectively treats conditions by repairing the intestinal mucosal barrier, offering insights for treating complex diseases and supporting the application of P. sibiricum in clinical settings.

Purpose: Breast cancer, the most common cancer in women globally, highlights the need for patient education. Despite many breast cancer discussions on TikTok, their scientific evaluation is lacking. Our study seeks to assess the content quality and accuracy of popular TikTok videos on breast cancer, to improve the dissemination of health knowledge. Methods: On August 22, 2023, we collected the top 100 trending videos from TikTok's Chinese version using "breast cancer/breast nodule" as keywords. We noted their length, TikTok duration, likes, comments, favorites, reposts, uploader types, and topics. Four assessment tools were used: Goobie's six questions, the Patient Educational Material Assessment Tool (PEMAT), the Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI), and the Global Quality Score (GQS). These instruments evaluate videos based on content, informational integrity, and overall quality. Results: Among the 100 videos, content quality was low with Goobie's questions mostly scoring 0, except for management at 1.0 (QR 1.0). PEMAT scores were moderate: 54.1 (QR 1.6) for sum, 47.0 (QR 18.8) for PEMAT-A, and 52.3 (QR 11.7) for PEMAT-U. Regarding the quality of information, the VIQI (sum) median was 14.1 (QR 0.2). Additionally, the median GQS score was 3.5 (QR 0.1). Medical professionals' videos focused on breast cancer stages, while patient videos centered on personal experiences. Patient videos had lower content and overall quality compared to those by medical professionals (PEMAT, GQS: P < 0.001, P = 0.004) but received more comments, indicating higher engagement (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: TikTok's breast cancer content shows educational potential, but while informational quality is moderate, content quality needs improvement. Videos by medical professionals are of higher quality. We recommend increased involvement of healthcare professionals on TikTok to enhance content quality. Non-medical users should share verified information, and TikTok should strengthen its content vetting. Users must scrutinize the credibility of health information on social platforms.

Diet plays a critical role in shaping the gut microbiome, which in turn regulates molecular activities in the colonic mucosa. The state and composition of the gut microbiome are key factors in the development of colorectal cancer. An altered gut microbiome, linked to weakened immune responses and the production of carcinogenic substances, is a significant contributor to colorectal cancer pathogenesis. Dietary changes that involve low-fiber and phytomolecule intake, coupled with higher consumption of red meat, can raise the risk of colorectal cancer. Salutary filaments, which reach the colon undigested, are metabolized by the gut microbiome, producing short-chain fatty acids. Short-chain fatty acids possess beneficial anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties that promote colon health. A well-balanced microbiome, supported by beneficial fibers and phytochemicals, can regulate the activation of proto-oncogenes and oncogenic pathways, thereby reducing cell proliferation. Recent research suggests that an overabundance of specific microbes, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, may contribute to adverse changes in the colonic mucosa. Positive lifestyle adjustments have been demonstrated to effectively inhibit the growth of harmful opportunistic organisms. Synbiotics, which combine probiotics and prebiotics, can protect the intestinal mucosa by enhancing immune responses and decreasing the production of harmful metabolites, oxidative stress, and cell proliferation. This narrative review provides a concise understanding of evolving evidence regarding how diet influences the gut microbiome, leading to the restoration of the colonic epithelium. It underscores the importance of a healthy, plant-based diet and associated supplements in preventing colorectal cancer by enhancing gut microbiome health.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of death worldwide and imposes a significant economic burden. TikTok has risen as a favored platform within the social media sphere for disseminating CHD-related information and stands as a pivotal resource for patients seeking knowledge about CHD. However, the quality of such content on TikTok remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the quality of information conveyed in TikTok CHD-related videos. METHODS: A comprehensive cross-sectional study was undertaken on TikTok videos related to CHD. The sources of the videos were identified and analyzed. The comprehensiveness of content was assessed through 6 questions addressing the definition, signs and symptoms, risk factors, evaluation, management, and outcomes. The quality of the videos was assessed using 3 standardized evaluative instruments: DISCERN, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks, and the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Furthermore, correlative analyses between video quality and characteristics of the uploaders and the videos themselves were conducted. RESULTS: The search yielded 145 CHD-related videos from TikTok, predominantly uploaded by health professionals (n=128, 88.3%), followed by news agencies (n=6, 4.1%), nonprofit organizations (n=10, 6.9%), and for-profit organizations (n=1, 0.7%). Content comprehensiveness achieved a median score of 3 (IQR 2-4). Median values for the DISCERN, JAMA, and GQS evaluations across all videos stood at 27 (IQR 24-32), 2 (IQR 2-2), and 2 (IQR 2-3), respectively. Videos from health professionals and nonprofit organizations attained significantly superior JAMA scores in comparison to those of news agencies (P<.001 and P=.02, respectively), whereas GQS scores for videos from health professionals were also notably higher than those from news agencies (P=.048). Within health professionals, cardiologists demonstrated discernibly enhanced performance over noncardiologists in both DISCERN and GQS assessments (P=.02). Correlative analyses unveiled positive correlations between video quality and uploader metrics, encompassing the positive correlations between the number of followers; total likes; average likes per video; and established quality indices such as DISCERN, JAMA, or GQS scores. Similar investigations relating to video attributes showed correlations between user engagement factors-likes, comments, collections, shares-and the aforementioned quality indicators. In contrast, a negative correlation emerged between the number of days since upload and quality indices, while a longer video duration corresponded positively with higher DISCERN and GQS scores. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of the videos was generally poor, with significant disparities based on source category. The content comprehensiveness coverage proved insufficient, casting doubts on the reliability and quality of the information relayed through these videos. Among health professionals, video contributions from cardiologists exhibited superior quality compared to noncardiologists. As TikTok's role in health information dissemination expands, ensuring accurate and reliable content is crucial to better meet patients' needs for CHD information that conventional health education fails to fulfill.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are essential molecules produced by gut bacteria that fuel intestinal cells and may also influence overall health. An imbalance of SCFAs can result in various acute and chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity and colorectal cancer (CRC). This review delves into the multifaceted roles of SCFAs, including a brief discussion on their source and various gut-residing bacteria. Primary techniques used for detection of SCFAs, including gas chromatography, high-performance gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and capillary electrophoresis are also discussed through this article. This review study also compiles various synthesis pathways of SCFAs from diverse substrates such as sugar, acetone, ethanol and amino acids. The different pathways through which SCFAs enter cells for immune response regulation are also highlighted. A major emphasis is the discussion on diseases associated with SCFA dysregulation, such as anaemia, brain development, CRC, depression, obesity and diabetes. This includes exploring the relationship between SCFA levels across ethnicities and their connection with blood pressure and CRC. In conclusion, this review highlights the critical role of SCFAs in maintaining gut health and their implications in various diseases, emphasizing the need for further research on SCFA detection, synthesis and their potential as diagnostic biomarkers. Future studies of SCFAs will pave the way for the development of novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for optimizing gut health and preventing diseases associated with SCFA dysregulation.

Cathodic Electro Fermentation (CEF) is an innovative approach to manage the spectrum of products deriving from anaerobic fermentation. Herein, mixed microbial culture fermentation using a ternary mixture containing labelled 13C glucose and non-labelled acetate and ethanol was studied to identify the role of polarization on the metabolic pathways of glucose fermentation. CEF at an applied potential of -700 mV (vs. SHE, Standard Hydrogen Electrode) enhanced the production yield of acetate, propionate, and butyrate (0.90 ± 0.10, 0.22 ± 0.03, and 0.34 ± 0.05 mol/mol; respectively) compared to control tests performed at open circuit potential (OCP) (0.54 ± 0.09, 0.15 ± 0.04 and, 0.21 ± 0.001 mol/mol, respectively). Results indicate that CEF affected the 13C labelled fermented product levels and their fractional 13C enrichments, allowing to establish metabolic pathway models. This work demonstrates that, under cathodic polarization, the abundance of both fully 13C labelled propionate and butyrate isotopomers increased compared to control tests. The effect of CEF is mainly due to intermediates initially produced from the glucose metabolic transformation in the presence of non-labelled acetate and ethanol as external substrates. These findings represent a significant advancement in current knowledge of CEF, which offers a promising tool to control mixed cultures bioprocesses.

Visuo-spatial bootstrapping refers to the well-replicated phenomena in which serial recall in a purely verbal task is boosted by presenting digits within the familiar spatial layout of a typical telephone keypad. The visuo-spatial bootstrapping phenomena indicates that additional support comes from long-term knowledge of a fixed spatial pattern, and prior experimentation supports the idea that access to this benefit depends on the availability of the visuo-spatial motor system (e.g., Allen et al., 2015). We investigate this by tracking participants' eye movements during encoding and retention of verbal lists to learn whether gaze patterns support verbal memory differently when verbal information is presented in the familiar visual layout. Participants' gaze was recorded during attempts to recall lists of seven digits in three formats: centre of the screen, typical telephone keypad, or a spatially identical layout with randomized number placement. Performance was better with the typical than with the novel layout. Our data show that eye movements differ when encoding and retaining verbal information that has a familiar layout compared with the same verbal information presented in a novel layout, suggesting recruitment of different spatial rehearsal strategies. However, no clear link between gaze pattern and recall accuracy was observed, which suggests that gazes play a limited role in retention, at best.

BACKGROUND: Lower air temperature and cold spells have been associated with an increased risk of various diseases. However, the short-term effect of lower air temperature and cold spells on myocardial infarction (MI) remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of lower air temperature and cold spells on the risk of hospitalization for MI in Sweden. METHODS: This population-based nationwide study included 120,380 MI cases admitted to hospitals in Sweden during the cold season (October to March) from 2005 to 2019. Daily mean air temperature (1 km2 resolution) was estimated using machine learning, and percentiles of daily temperatures experienced by individuals in the same municipality were used as individual exposure indicators to account for potential geographic adaptation. Cold spells were defined as periods of at least 2 consecutive days with a daily mean temperature below the 10th percentile of the temperature distribution for each municipality. A time-stratified case-crossover design incorporating conditional logistic regression models with distributed lag nonlinear models using lag 0 to 1 (immediate) and 2 to 6 days (delayed) was used to evaluate the short-term effects of lower air temperature and cold spells on total MI, non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). RESULTS: A decrease of 1-unit in percentile temperature at a lag of 2 to 6 days was significantly associated with increased risks of total MI, NSTEMI, and STEMI, with ORs of 1.099 (95% CI: 1.057-1.142), 1.110 (95% CI: 1.060-1.164), and 1.076 (95% CI: 1.004-1.153), respectively. Additionally, cold spells at a lag of 2 to 6 days were significantly associated with increased risks for total MI, NSTEMI, and STEMI, with ORs of 1.077 (95% CI: 1.037-1.120), 1.069 (95% CI: 1.020-1.119), and 1.095 (95% CI: 1.023-1.172), respectively. Conversely, lower air temperature and cold spells at a lag of 0 to 1 days were associated with decreased risks for MI. CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide case-crossover study reveals that short-term exposures to lower air temperature and cold spells are associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for MI at lag 2 to 6 days.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents approximately 90 % of all DM cases and is primarily caused by an imbalance in blood glucose homeostasis due to inadequate insulin secretion or insulin resistance. This study explores the potential therapeutic effects of chitosan guanidine (CSG) on a T2DM mouse model. The findings reveal that CSG significantly enhances oral glucose tolerance (OGTT) and insulin sensitivity (ITT), reduces fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, and suppresses the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in T2DM mice. These changes improve insulin resistance and diminish inflammation. Additionally, CSG markedly ameliorates lipid metabolism disorders, lowers total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels, and inhibits hepatic fat accumulation. 16S rRNA and Spearman correlation analyses indicate that CSG promotes the relative abundance of probiotic genera such as Bacteroidota, Patescibacteria, Actinobacteria, and Cyanobacteria. These bacteria are positively correlated with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) levels. Conversely, CSG reduces the relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria, including Proteobacteria and Ralstonia, leading to an improved intestinal microbial community composition in T2DM mice and alleviating T2DM symptoms. These results suggest that CSG holds significant potential as a non-insulin therapeutic agent for diabetes management.

The aim of this study was to extract water-soluble dietary fibers (WSDFskin), pectin (PECskin), and xyloglucan (XGskin) from hazelnut skin and to determine their impacts on colonic microbiota and metabolic function. WSDFskin, PECskin, and XGskin were extracted by water, acid, and alkali treatments, respectively. Monosaccharide analysis revealed WSDFskin and PECskin were dominated by uronic acids, while the XGskin was found to contain xyloglucan- and pectin-associated sugars. In vitro fecal fermentation analysis showed that WSDFskin, PECskin, and XGskin are fermented to different microbial short-chain fatty acid profiles by identical microbiota. 16S rRNA sequencing demonstrated that PECskin promoted Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Lachnospiraceae related operational taxonomic units (OTUs), which are recognized as beneficial members of the human gut, whereas WSDFskin and XGskin stimulated Bacteroides OTUs. Interestingly, increased abundances of F. prausnitzii and Lachnospiraceae OTUs in PECskin were higher than those in commercially available pectin. Finally, PECskin and XGskin were tested in a biscuit model and the results showed that either PECskin or XGskin can be incorporated into biscuit formulations without impacting physical, textural, and sensory properties of the final product. Overall, our results demonstrated that hazelnut skin, an industrial byproduct, can be utilized for the production of functional dietary fibers, especially pectin, to improve colonic health.

Short-chain organic acids (SCOAs) are the intermediates in the anaerobic fermentation process, and can be used in food, textile, and pharmaceutical industries to produce different end use products. SCOAs can be separated, purified, and concentrated by different processes, such as distillation, extraction or membrane-based systems. SCOAs production adds more profitable possibilities to an acidic fermentation process by integration these marketable acids as highly concentrated mixtures with other refinery processes. The present study investigated two approaches for recovering of SCOAs: i) the production of clarified SCOAs liquid by microfiltration (MF) and then performing their concentration by reverse osmosis (RO) and ii) the recovery and concentration by the so-called integrated neutralization and acidified reaction method. The results of MF showed that some SCOAs were retained in the retentate together with the solids. However, in the following RO treatment, SCOAs could be successfully concentrated with a yield retention of over 90 % from the SCOAs liquid. In the latter method, a color-free SCOAs liquid was obtained with an increase in the total SCOAs concentration from 23 g/L to 146 g/L.

Purpose: To determine whether green banana powder (GBP) and pineapple fibre powder (PFP) promote beneficial bacterial species, directly improve human gut health and modulate the gut microbiome and understand their utility as functional foods and dietary supplements. Methods: Over 14 days, 60 adults followed protocol requirements, completed food diaries and study questionnaires, avoided consuming supplements with prebiotics, probiotics or postbiotics, and ingested food containing 5 g of total daily fibre [placebo (10.75 g), GBP (10.75 g) or PFP (7.41 g)]. Participants' medical and baseline wellness histories, as well as stool samples, were collected at baseline, day 7 and 14. Stool DNA was processed for sequencing. Results: Dietary fibre and resistant starches (RS) in GBP and PFP promoted temporal increases in beneficial bacteria. GBP significantly elevated 7 species (F. prausnitzii, B. longum, B. bifidum, B. adolescentis, B. pseudocatenulatum, B. obeum, and R. inulinivorans), while PFP enriched 6 species (B. ovatus, B. cellulosilyticus, B. bifidum, B. intestinalis, R. inulinivorans, and E. siraeum). These bacteria, found to be deficient in younger adults, were promoted by both powders. PFP benefitted both genders aged 16-23, while GBP benefitted overweight/obese individuals, including females. GBP and PFP fiber and RS improved bowel regularity and health as well as metabolism by promoting histidine, branched-chain amino acids, short-chain fatty acids, and biotin production. The additional fiber caused "low" bloatedness and reduced "fairly bad" sleep disruptions, without affecting sleep durations. Conclusion: GBP and PFP supplementation increased beneficial bacteria and metabolites, improved host gut health, and present a valuable nutritional strategy for enhancing human health. Thin pancake-like neuronal networks cultured on top of a planar microelectrode array have been extensively tried out in neuroengineering, as a substrate for the mobile robot's control unit, i.e., as a cyborg's brain. Most of these attempts failed due to intricate self-organizing dynamics in the neuronal systems. In particular, the networks may exhibit an emergent spatial map of steady nucleation sites ("n-sites") of spontaneous population spikes. Being unpredictable and independent of the surface electrode locations, the n-sites drastically change local ability of the network to generate spikes. Here, using a spiking neuronal network model with generative spatially-embedded connectome, we systematically show in simulations that the number, location, and relative activity of spontaneously formed n-sites ("the vitals") crucially depend on the samplings of three distributions: (1) the network distribution of neuronal excitability, (2) the distribution of connections between neurons of the network, and (3) the distribution of maximal amplitudes of a single synaptic current pulse. Moreover, blocking the dynamics of a small fraction (about 4%) of non-pacemaker neurons having the highest excitability was enough to completely suppress the occurrence of population spikes and their n-sites. This key result is explained theoretically. Remarkably, the n-sites occur taking into account only short-term synaptic plasticity, i.e., without a Hebbian-type plasticity. As the spiking network model used in this study is strictly deterministic, all simulation results can be accurately reproduced. The model, which has already demonstrated a very high richness-to-complexity ratio, can also be directly extended into the three-dimensional case, e.g., for targeting peculiarities of spiking dynamics in cerebral (or brain) organoids. We recommend the model as an excellent illustrative tool for teaching network-level computational neuroscience, complementing a few benchmark models.

Hyperspectral camera technology is advancing rapidly, and this paper seeks to compare a state-of-the-art industrial dual-camera setup to a single-camera system employing the latest chip technology (IMX990 from Sony). The hyperspectral cameras are compared over both the Visual and Short-Wave Infrared range (400-1700 nm) of the electromagnet spectrum. The spectral range and resolution, as well as spatial parameters and spectroscopic information are quantified with comparable optics, electronics, and test targets. Generally, enhanced spectral detail and reduced noise were observed for the single-camera compared to its peers. Thus, the IMX990 shows promising performance for the new generation of hyperspectral cameras directly relevant to industrial applications, such as detection, documentation, and sorting.

BACKGROUND: Short cervical length in the mid-trimester is a powerful predictor of preterm birth. However, clinical significance of cervical length in the third trimester for predicting preterm birth has not been established yet. OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictive role of a shortened cervix in the third trimester for preterm birth in women who had a normal cervical length in the second trimester STUDY DESIGN: : This retrospective cohort study included women who underwent cervical length measured at least once in both the second trimester (16+0 weeks to 27+6weeks) and the early third trimester (28+0 weeks to 33+6weeks). Women with short cervical length in the second trimester, those with multiple pregnancies, those who underwent cerclage operation, and those who had iatrogenic preterm birth were excluded. The study population were divided into two groups based on cervical length in the third trimester: a short cervix (≤ 25 mm) group and a control group (> 25 mm). Rates of preterm birth (< 37 weeks) were compared between two groups. Predictive performances of cervical length in the third trimester for preterm birth were assessed. RESULTS: Women with a short cervical length at 28+0 to 33+6 weeks accounted for 12.6% (n = 717) of the total study population (n = 5,682). Preterm birth rate was 9.5% in the short cervix group, which was significantly higher than that (3.2%) in the control group (p < 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio for short cervical length on preterm birth was 2.73 (95% CI: 1.96-3.79). A short cervix in the third trimester had a sensitivity of 30.1%, a specificity of 88.1%, a positive predictive value of 9.5%, and a negative predictive value of 96.8% in predicting preterm birth. The addition of third-trimester cervical length to the predictive model significantly increased the area under the curve from 0.64 (95% CI: 0.60-0.68) to 0.67 (95% CI: 0.63-0.71) (p = 0.002), demonstrating improved predictive performance. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 13% of women with normal cervical length in the mid-trimester had a short cervical length after 28 weeks, which increased the risk of preterm birth. The high specificity and negative predictive value of third-trimester cervical length measurements underscore their critical utility in identifying women at low risk for preterm delivery.

In the vanguard of neuromorphic engineering, we develop a paradigm of biocompatible polymer memcapacitors using a seamless solution process, unleashing comprehensive synaptic capabilities depending on both the stimulation form and history. Like the human brain to learn and adapt, the memcapacitors exhibit analogue-type and evolvable capacitance shifts that mirror the complex flexibility of synaptic strengthening and weakening. With increasing frequency and intensity of the stimulation, the memcapacitors demonstrate an evolution from short-term plasticity (STP) to long-term plasticity (LTP), and even to metaplasticity (MP) at a higher level. A physical picture, featuring the stimulus-controlled spatiotemporal ion redistribution in the polymer, elaborates the origin of the memcapacitive prowess and resultant versatile synaptic plasticity. The distinctive MP behavior endows the memcapacitors with a dynamic learning rate (LR), which is utilized in an artificial neural network. The superiority of implementing a dynamic LR compared with conventional practices of using constant LR shines light on the potential of the memcapacitors to exploit organic neuromorphic computing hardware.

BACKGROUND: Serial transverse enteroplasty is used to treat patients with chronic intestinal failure owing to short bowel syndrome. Current literature lacks discussion of its role for other etiologies of intestinal failure and its impact on adult patients' nutrition support needs and quality of life. METHODS: We performed a case series on adults with parenteral nutrition (PN) dependence who underwent serial transverse enteroplasty at Emory University Hospital, a quaternary referral center between 2011 and 2022. Data collected included demographics, operative technique, and preoperative and postoperative PN requirements. A phone survey was administered to evaluate the impact of PN and the operation on quality of life. RESULTS: Ten patients underwent the procedure of interest during the study period. Indications included short bowel syndrome following multiple abdominal operations or intra-abdominal catastrophe and chronic partial bowel obstruction with dysmotility. Bowel length increased by a median of 83%. All patients were discharged home after a median hospital stay of 21 days. At 1-year follow-up, survival was 100%, two (20%) patients fully weaned from PN, three others (30%) reduced PN frequency, and six (60%) decreased their daily parenteral energy requirement. Two additional patients fully weaned from PN by 18 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: This represents one of the largest case series of serial transverse enteroplasty in adults. Small intestinal length nearly doubled, and PN dependence was reduced in most patients. Given the low morbidity and good quality of life observed in this series, this procedure should be more widely investigated for patients with chronic intestinal failure.
