OBJECTIVES: Farfarae Flos has the effect of cough suppression and phlegm elimination, with cough suppression as the main function. Studies have revealed that certain components of Farfarae Flos may be related to its cough suppressant effect, and some components have been confirmed to have cough suppressant activity. However, the antitussive material basis of Farfarae Flos has not been systematically elucidated. This study aims to elucidate the group of active ingredients in Farfarae Flos with cough suppressant activity by correlating the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint of Farfarae Flos extract with its cough suppressant activity. METHODS: HPLC was used to establish the fingerprint profiles of 10 batches of Farfarae Flos extract and obtain their chemical composition data. Guinea pigs were selected as experimental animals and the citric acid-induced cough model was used to evaluate the antitussive efficacy data of 10 batches of Farfarae Flos extract. SPF-grade healthy male Hartley guinea pigs were randomly divided into the S1 to S10 groups, a positive control group, and a blank control group (12 groups in total), with 10 guinea pigs in each group. The S1 to S10 groups were respectively administered Farfarae Flos extract S1 to S10 (4 g/kg), the positive control group was administered pentoverine citrate (10 mg/kg), and the blank control group was administered purified water. Each group received continuous oral administration for 5 days. The guinea pigs were placed in 5 L closed wide-mouth bottles, and 17.5% citric acid was sprayed into the bottle with an ultrasonic atomizer at the maximum spray intensity for 0.5 minutes. The cough latency period and cough frequency in 5 minutes were recorded for each guinea pig. Grey relational analysis (GRA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) were used to conduct spectral-effect correlation analysis of the chemical composition data of Farfarae Flos extract and the antitussive efficacy data, and predict the group of active ingredients in Farfarae Flos with antitussive activity. The bioequivalence verification was conducted to verify the predicted group of active ingredients in Farfarae Flos with antitussive activity: SPF-grade healthy male Hartley guinea pigs were randomly divided into a S9 group, an active ingredient group, a positive control group, and a blank control group (4 groups in total), with 10 guinea pigs in each group. The S9 group was administered Farfarae Flos extract S9 (4 g/kg), the active ingredient group was administered the predicted combination of antitussive active ingredients (dose equivalent to 4 g/kg of Farfarae Flos extract S9), the positive control group was administered pentoverine citrate (10 mg/kg), and the blank control group was administered purified water. Each group received continuous oral administration for 5 days, and animal modeling and observation of efficacy indicators were the same as above. RESULTS: The HPLC fingerprint of 10 batches of Farfarae Flos extract was established, and the peak area data of 14 main common peaks were obtained. The antitussive effect data of 10 batches of Farfarae Flos extract were obtained. Compared with the blank control group, the cough latence in the positive control group and S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7, S8, S9, S10 groups was prolonged (all P<0.01), while the cough frequency in 5 minutes in the positive control group and S1, S2, S4, S6, S8, S9, S10 groups was decreased (all P<0.05). The analysis of spectrum-effect relationship revealed that isochlorogenic acid C, isochlorogenic acid A, chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid B, isoquercitrin, and rutin had high contribution to the antitussive effect of Farfarae Flos, and the 6 components were predicted to be the antitussive component group of Farfarae Flos. The verification of bioequivalence showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the antitussive effect between the S9 group and the antitussive component composition group(all P>0.05), which confirmed that isochlorogenic acid C, isochlorogenic acid A, chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid B, isoquercetin, and rutin were the antitussive component group of Farfarae Flos. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of spectrum-effect relationship combined with the verification of bioequivalence could be used to study the antitussive material basis of Farfarae Flos. The antitussive effect of Farfarae Flos is the result of the joint action of many components.

Acteoside (ACT) was the main bioactive components in phenylethanoid glycosides of Cistanche tubulosa. Currently, the development of an efficient method for selectively separating ACT was crucial. Consequently, yolk-shell magnetic mesoporous carbon (YSMMC) was synthesized as a nanofiller to prepare molecularly imprinted membranes (ACT-MIMs) with instant noodles-like structure for selectively separating ACT. The numerous YSMMC were moved to the upper surface of ACT-MIMs by magnetic guidance and constructed the instant noodles-like structure in ACT-MIMs. The instant noodle-like structure increased the surface roughness of ACT-MIMs, which was conducive to improving the effective imprinted interface, increasing the selectivity of ACT-MIMs. In addition, the instant noodle-like structure had dendritic interleaved pathways in ACT-MIMs. The dendritic interleaved pathways can intercept ACT through ACT-MIMs, enhancing the permselectivity of ACT-MIMs. The prepared YSMMC possessed the dendritic shell and interlayer cavity structure can provide a great accommodation space, improving the rebinding capacities of ACT-MIMs. The high permselectivity (14.49), remarkable selectivity (7.52), and excellent rebinding capacity (120.48 mg/g) were achieved for the prepared ACT-MIMs. Thus, the design of ACT-MIMs with the instant noodles-like structure were valuable for selectively separating of bioactive components.

Camellia oleifera oil is a pure and natural high-grade oil prevalent in South China. Camellia oleifera oil is known for its richness in unsaturated fatty acids and high nutritional value. There is increasing evidence indicating that a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acids is beneficial to health. Despite the widespread production of Camellia oleifera oil and its bioactive components, reports on its nutritional components are scarce, especially regarding systematic reviews of extraction methods and biological functions. This review systematically summarized the latest research on the bioactive components and biological functions of Camellia oleifera oil reported over the past decade. In addition to unsaturated fatty acids, Camellia oleifera oil contains six main functional components contributing to its antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular protective properties. These functional components are vitamin E, saponins, polyphenols, sterols, squalene, and flavonoids. This paper reviewed the biological activity of Camellia oleifera oil and its extraction methods, laying a foundation for further development of its bioactive components.

Cartilage damage and synovial inflammation are vital pathological changes in osteoarthritis (OA). Biqi Capsule, a traditional Chinese medicine formula used for the clinical treatment of arthritis in China, yields advantages in attenuating OA progression. The drawback here is that the bioactive components and pharmacological mechanisms by which Biqi Capsule exerts its anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects have yet to be fully clarified. For in vivo studies, a papain-induced OA rat model was established to explore the pharmacological effects and potential mechanisms of Biqi Capsule against OA. Biqi Capsule alleviated articular cartilage degeneration and chondrocyte damage in OA rats and inhibited the phosphorylation of NF-κB and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in synovial tissue. Network pharmacology analysis suggested that the primary biological processes regulated by Biqi Capsule are inflammation and oxidative stress, and the critical pathway regulated is the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. The result of this analysis was later verified on SW1353 cells. The in vitro studies demonstrated that Glycyrrhizic Acid and Liquiritin in Biqi Capsule attenuated H2O2-stimulated SW1353 chondrocyte damage via activation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Moreover, Biqi Capsule alleviated inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages via the NF-κB/IL-6 pathway. These observations were suggested to have been facilitated by Brucine, Liquiritin, Salvianolic Acid B, Glycyrrhizic Acid, Cryptotanshinone, and Tanshinone ⅡA. Put together, this study partially clarifies the pharmacological mechanisms and the bioactive components of Biqi capsules against OA and suggests that it is a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of OA. The development of facile, low-cost reliable, and precise onsite assays for the bioactive component hypoxanthine (Hx) in meat products is significant for safeguarding food safety and public health. Herein, we proposed a smartphone-assissted aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogen tetraphenylethene (TPE)-incorporated amorphous Fe-doped phosphotungstates (Fe-Phos@TPE) nanozyme-based ratiometric fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode biosensor for achieving the onsite visual detection of Hx. When the Hx existed, xanthine oxidase (XOD) catalyzed Hx into H2O2 to be further catalyzed into •OH by the prominent peroxidase activity of Fe-Phos@TPE at pH = 6.5, resulting in the oxidization of nonfluorescent o-phenylenediamine (OPD, naked-eye colorless) to be yellow fluorescent emissive 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP, naked-eye dark yellow) at 550 nm as well as the intrinsic blue fluorescence of Fe-Phos@TPE at 440 nm to be decreased via inner-filter effect (IFE) action, thereby realizing a multi-enzyme cascade catalytic reaction at near-neutral pH to overcome the traditional acidity dependence-induced time-consuming and low sensitivity troublesome.

Halophilic lactic acid bacteria have been widely found in various high-salt fermented foods. The distribution of these species in salt-fermented foods contributes significantly to the development of the product's flavor. Besides, these bacteria also have the ability to biosynthesize bioactive components which potentially apply to different areas. In this review, insights into the metabolic properties, salt stress responses, and potential applications of these bacteria have been have been elucidated. The purpose of this review highlights the important role of halophilic lactic acid bacteria in improving the quality and safety of salt-fermented products and explores the potential application of these bacteria.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and death worldwide and has become a global public health problem. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in China to treat CVD and achieved promising results. Therefore, TCM has aroused significant interest among pharmacologists and medical practitioners. Previous research showed that TCM can regulate the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis (AS), ischemic heart disease, heart failure, myocardial injury, and myocardial fibrosis by inhibiting vascular endothelial injury, inflammation, oxidant stress, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and myocardial remodeling. It is well-known that TCM has the characteristics of multi-component, multi-pathway, and multitarget. Here, we systematically review the bioactive components, pharmacological effects, and clinical application of TCM in preventing and treating CVD.

The antiviral properties of the extracts of Vespa crabro nests collected from the Black Sea, Turkey have been investigated on Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf) cell cultures of Autographa californica multicapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV). The effect of nests on cell viability and cytotoxicity analysis and the antiviral assay was studied, and the cytopathic effects of the virus were detected. The nest's viral content was identified. The impact of nest extracts on the protein synthesis of the virus was investigated. Also interaction with pUC18 plasmid DNA was investigated, to analyse the protective effects of the Vespa crabro nest extract againist to hydroxyl radical-mediated DNA damage. 50 µg/ml concentration of ethanol, acetone, and petroleum ether extracts of the nests reduced the cytopathic effects of baculovirus on Sf cells. The extracts delayed infection above 25 µg/ml concentration. When the effects of nest extracts on virus titer were evaluated; the 50 µg/ml concentration of the acetone extract of the nest showed the highest effect (75%) reducing the virus titer. 25 µg/ml concentration of the ethanol extract of the nest showed the lowest effect (33.33%) with a reduction. The presence of polyhedrin protein was observed at 25 µg/ml concentrations of acetone and petroleum ether extracts. When the potential of the nest extracts to repair DNA damage, the nest extracts were found to have a concentration-dependent repair feature in different applications. As a result of bioactive component analysis, (Z) 9-Tricosane and (cis)-2-nonadecene (1.65%) were found to have the highest % areas. In other respects, 1H-Purine-6-amine, 2-dodecanol and hexadecanoic acid compaunds were Additionally, 1H-Purine-6-amine, 2-dodecanol and hexadecanoic acid compounds, which are associated with antiviral activity, also determined in the biocomponent analysis. This study developed a novel and green method to produce fragrant sesame oil using microwaves and subcritical extraction (SBE). Sesame seeds were microwaved at 540 W for 0-9 min before subcritical propane extraction at 40 °C and 0.5 MPa. SBE caused less deformation to the cellular microstructure of sesame cotyledons while dramatically improving oil yield (96.7-97.1 %) compared to screw processing (SP) (53.1-58.6 %). SBE improved extraction rates for γ-tocopherol (381.1-454.9 µg/g) and sesame lignans (917.9-970.4 mg/100 g) in sesame oil compared to SP (360.1-443.8 µg/g and 872.8-916.8 mg/100 g, respectively). Microwaves generated aroma-active heterocyclics and phenolics faster than hot-air roasting in sesame oil with a better sensory profile. SBE had a higher extraction rate for aroma-active terpenes, alcohols, and esters while reducing the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs and HCAs in sesame oil. The novel combination process of microwaves and subcritical extraction is promising in producing fragrant sesame oil with superior qualities.

The flower of Syringa pubescens Turcz. is used in Chinese folk medicine and also as a flower tea for healthcare. The effects of five drying methods on the active compound contents, the antioxidant abilities, anti-inflammatory properties and enzyme inhibitory activities were evaluated. The plant materials were treated using shade-drying, microwave-drying, sun-drying, infrared-drying and oven-drying. The seven active compounds were simultaneously determined using an HPLC method. Furthermore, the chemical profile was assessed using scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The antioxidant capacities and protective effects on L02 cells induced with hydrogen peroxide were measured. The anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 cells were investigated. The enzyme inhibitory activities were determined against α-amylase, α-glucosidase cholinesterases and tyrosinase. The results indicated that drying methods had significant influences on the active compound contents and biological properties. Compared with other samples, the OD samples possessed low IC50 values with 0.118 ± 0.004 mg/mL for DPPH radical, 1.538 ± 0.0972 for hydroxyl radical and 0.886 ± 0.199 mg/mL for superoxide radical, while the SHD samples had stronger reducing power compared with other samples. The SHD samples could be effective against H2O2-induced injury on L02 cells by the promoting of T-AOC, GSH-PX, SOD and CAT activities and the reducing of MDA content compared with other samples. Furthermore, SPF samples, especially the SHD sample, could evidently ameliorate inflammation through the inhibition of IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α expression. All the studied SPF samples exhibited evidently inhibitory effects on the four enzymes. The IC50 values of inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase and α-amylase from SHD sample were 2.516 ± 0.024 and 0.734 ± 0.034 mg/mL, respectively. SD samples had potential inhibitory effects on cholinesterases and tyrosinase with IC50 values of 3.443 ± 0.060 and 1.732 ± 0.058 mg/mL. In consideration of active compound contents and biological activities, it was recommended that SHD and SD be applied for drying SPF at an industrial scale.

Jujube has various functional properties and is a promising source of bioactive compounds and flavors. This study investigated the functional properties and flavor characteristics of milk from cows supplemented with jujube powder (JP). Here, milk volatile profiles and taste properties were analyzed by using an electronic nose, and headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Compared with the control group, the total antioxidant capacity, 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic free radical scavenging activity, lactoferrin, and IgG levels increased significantly in the JP group. Volatile flavor analysis indicated that ketone levels increased, while acid abundance decreased, and toluene and dimethyl sulfone significantly increased in the JP group. Taste profile analyses demonstrated that jujube supplementation altered the taste of the milk. In summary, dietary jujube powder supplementation affects the volatile flavor composition and aroma of milk, as well as the bioactive component and antioxidant properties. These findings enhance our understanding of milk production using direct dietary supplementation to produce sustainable dairy products.

Human milk is the gold standard for infant feeding. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a unique group of oligosaccharides in human milk. Great interest in HMOs has grown in recent years due to their positive effects on various aspects of infant health. HMOs provide various physiologic functions, including establishing a balanced infant's gut microbiota, strengthening the gastrointestinal barrier, preventing infections, and potential support to the immune system. However, the clinical application of HMOs is challenging due to their specificity to human milk and the difficulties and high costs associated with their isolation and synthesis. Here, the differences in oligosaccharides in human and other mammalian milk are compared, and the synthetic strategies to access HMOs are summarized. Additionally, the potential use and molecular mechanisms of HMOs as a new food bioactive component in different diseases, such as infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, diabetes, and allergy, are critically reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of HMOs in basic research and application are discussed.

The most significant issues that humans face today include a growing population, an altering climate, an growing reliance on pesticides, the appearance of novel infectious agents, and an accumulation of industrial waste. The production of agricultural goods has also been subject to a great number of significant shifts, often known as agricultural revolutions, which have been influenced by the progression of civilization, technology, and general human advancement. Sustainable measures that can be applied in agriculture, the environment, medicine, and industry are needed to lessen the harmful effects of the aforementioned problems. Endophytes, which might be bacterial or fungal, could be a successful solution. They protect plants and promote growth by producing phytohormones and by providing biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Endophytes produce the diverse type of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, quinones, chinones, phenolic acids etc. and are known for various therapeutic advantages such as anticancer, antitumor, antidiabetic, antifungal, antiviral, antimicrobial, antimalarial, antioxidant activity. Proteases, pectinases, amylases, cellulases, xylanases, laccases, lipases, and other types of enzymes that are vital for many different industries can also be produced by endophytes. Due to the presence of all these bioactive compounds in endophytes, they have preferred sources for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. This review aims to comprehend the contributions and uses of endophytes in agriculture, medicinal, industrial sectors and bio-nanotechnology with their mechanism of action.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.), the underground bulb of the Allium plant in the family Liliaceae, is a common and popular spice that has historically been used to prevent and treat many different diseases such as pain, deafness, diarrhea, tumors, and other healthy problems. Garlic essential oil contains a variety of organosulfur compounds, such as the most representative diallyl disulfides (DADS) and diallyl trisulfides (DATS), which have attracted great interest in medicine, food, and agriculture because of their rich biological activities. This paper reviews the research progress on the composition and bioactivities of garlic essential oil mixtures and the bioactivity of some typical monomeric sulfides in garlic essential oil. The active mechanisms of representative sulfides in garlic essential oil were analyzed, and the applications of garlic essential oil in functional food, food additives, and clinical treatment were discussed. Combined with the current research status, the limitations and development direction of garlic essential oil in the study of molecular mechanism were discussed, which is of great significance to the development of garlic essential oil as a natural and safe alternative medicine for treatment.

The effects of lyophilized tamarillo powder (TP) on the physicochemical, antioxidant, sensory, and starch digestibility characteristics of steamed breads were studied. The TP was used to substitute 5-20% of wheat flour to make steamed breads, assigned as T5, T10, T15, and T20, respectively. The results showed that TP is rich in dietary fiber (36.45%). Its extract is rich in bioactive components, including phenolic compounds (28.90 mg GAE/g extract), ascorbic acid (3.25 mg/g extract), total anthocyanins (316.35 µg C3GE/g extract), and total carotenoids (12.68 µg ßCE/g extract) and has good antioxidant capacity. As the level of TP increased, the color of steamed breads became darker, redder, and yellower; the texture became harder, and the overall consumption preference decreased. However, their bioactive components content and antioxidant activity increased. The starch hydrolysis percentage of T5 (43.82%), T10 (41.57%), T15 (37.41%), and T20 (35.63%) at 180 min was significantly lower than that of the control (49.80%) (p < 0.05). The in vitro predicted glycemic index (80.02) of T20 was categorized as a medium-GI food when bread was used as the reference. On a nine-point hedonic test, control and T5 had the highest overall preference scores (7.1-7.4). The T20 supplemented with extra 15-20% water improved its volume and specific volume, and the overall preference scores (7.4-7.5) were not significantly different from the control (p > 0.05). Overall, a partial replacement of wheat flour with TP in steamed bread making could be developed as a new type of medium-GI value food containing more bioactive components and effective antioxidant capacity.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. NEC is multifactorial and the result of a complex interaction of feeding, dysbiosis, and exaggerated inflammatory response. Feeding practices in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) can vary among institutions and have significant impact on the vulnerable gastointestinal tract of preterm infants. . These practices encompass factors such as the type of feeding and fortification, duration of feeding, and rate of advancement, among others. The purpose of this article is to review the data on some of the most common feeding practices in the NICU and their impact on the development of NEC in preterm infants. Data on the human milk bioactive component glycosaminoglycans, specifically hyaluronan, will also be discussed in the context of postnatal intestinal development and NEC prevention.

Siraitia grosvenorii (Swingle) C. Jeffrey, a perennial vine of the Cucurbitaceae family, is a unique medicine food homology species from China. S. grosvenorii can be used as a natural sweetener in the food industry and as a traditional medicine for moistening the lungs, quenching a cough, smoothing the intestines, and relieving constipation. Additionally, the fruits, roots, stems, and leaves of S. grosvenorii are rich in active ingredients, and have pharmacological effects such as immune regulation, hypoglycemia, and antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and antitumor effects, etc. Therefore, S. grosvenorii has broad application prospects in the pharmaceutical industry. This paper reviews the bioactive components, pharmacological effects, and extraction methods of S. grosvenorii, summarizes them, and proposes their future development directions. This current overview highlights the value of S. grosvenorii. By documenting the comprehensive information of S. grosvenorii, the review aims to provide the appropriate guidelines for its future in-depth development and the utilization of S. grosvenorii resources for their roles as active ingredient (triterpenoids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides, etc.) sources in the food industry and in the development of functional foods.

In the current work, the effects of steam and boiling water blanching on the drying characteristics, water distribution, microstructure, and contents of bioactive substances of Gastrodia elata (G. elata) were explored. Results showed that the degree of steaming and blanching was related to the core temperature of G. elata. The steaming and blanching pretreatment increased the drying time of the samples by more than 50%. The low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) of treated samples showed that the relaxation time corresponded to water molecule states (bound, immobilized, and free) and G. elata became shorter, which indicated a reduction in free moisture and increased resistance of water diffusion in the solid structure during drying. Hydrolysis of polysaccharides and gelatinization of starch granules was observed in the microstructure of treated samples, which was consistent with changes in water status and drying rates. Steaming and blanching increased gastrodin and crude polysaccharide contents and decreased p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol content. These findings will contribute to a better understanding of the effect of steaming and blanching on the drying behavior and quality attributes of G. elata.

Previously, we demonstrated that the administration of either geranylgeraniol (GGOH) or green tea polyphenols (GTP) improved bone health. This study examined the combined effects of GGOH and GTP on glucose homeostasis in addition to bone remodeling in obese mice. We hypothesized that GGOH and GTP would have an additive or synergistic effect on improving glucose homeostasis and bone remodeling possibly in part via suppression of proinflammatory cytokines. Forty-eight male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to a high-fat diet (control), HFD + 400 mg GGOH/kg diet (GG), HFD + 0.5% GTP water (TP), or HFD + GGOH + GTP (GGTP) diet for 14 weeks. Results demonstrated that GTP supplementation improved glucose tolerance in obese mice. Neither GGOH nor GTP affected pancreas insulin or bone formation procollagen type I intact N-terminal, bone volume at the lumbar vertebrae, or bone parameters at the trabecular bone and cortical bone of the femur. There was an interactive effect for serum bone resorption collagen type 1 cross-linked C-telopeptide concentrations, resulting in no-GGOH and no-GTP groups having the highest values. GGOH increased trabecular number and decreased trabecular separation at the lumbar vertebrae. GTP increased trabecular thickness at lumbar vertebrae. The GG group produced the greatest connectivity density and the lowest structure model index. Only GTP, not GGOH, decreased adipokines concentrations (resistin, leptin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and interleukin-6). In an obese male mouse model, individual GGOH and GTP supplementation improved glucose homeostasis, serum CTX, and trabecular microstructure of LV-4. However, the combined GGOH and GTP supplementation compromises such osteoprotective effects on serum CTX and trabecular bone of obese mice.
