RÉSUMÉ

This article describes the evolving landscape of medical education in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the renewed importance of public health, mental well-being, and career choices among medical students. The pandemic has prompted a significant shift in medical student's career aspirations, highlighting the need for mental health support mechanisms within the medical education framework. Medical students' career choices are influenced directly and indirectly by the challenges and experiences of the pandemic era, which are discussed in this article under four key themes: traditional values, global health interests and disparities, developing trends, and digital healthcare. There is an urgent need to adjust medical training to the new reality and share the future directions of the medical education landscape by embracing diverse career paths in medicine, integrating technology into medical training, adapting to the changing context of medicine, and strengthening collaboration and communication. The pandemic underscores the importance of evidence-based patient care, necessitating the preparation of tomorrow's doctors to address the emerging healthcare challenges with resilience, adaptability, and a comprehensive understanding of both local and global health challenges.

BACKGROUND: Considering that beliefs may be assessed and changed, inventories measuring employability and career beliefs may be of utmost importance for career interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study introduces the psychometric properties of a brief version of the Employability and Career Beliefs Inventory (ECBI) in a sample of unemployed persons. METHODS AND RESULTS: Altogether, 2023 unemployed persons aged from 18 to 66 years old and living in Southern Portugal participated in an online survey. The ECBI's original internal structure was tested and did not fit the data. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were implemented, and a three-factor solution was retained. The three factors discriminate three types of beliefs named growth, pessimism, and flexibility. Measurement invariance models identified scalar equivalence across gender and educational degree, and metric invariance across age. All items fit the graded response model's parameters. The growth and flexibility subscales were less effective in the assessment of low latent trait levels, whereas the opposite was observed with the pessimism subscale. Internal consistency is good yet discrimination between factors is questionable. Correlations to career decision-making self-efficacy evidence validity based on the relations to other constructs. CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations, the brief version of the ECBI proposed in this study is ready for further use and development among unemployed persons.

Introdução: O objeto do estudo foi a Career Anchors Self-Assessment no contexto de enfermeiros brasileiros sob a ótica da saúde do trabalhador. Objetivos: Adaptar transculturalmente a Career Anchors Self-Assessment para o contexto brasileiro; Analisar evidências de validade de conteúdo, processo de resposta e estrutura interna da versão brasileira da Career Anchors Self-Assessment em uma amostra de enfermeiros; Discutir a validação da Career Anchors Self-Assessment para a realidade brasileira e a utilização da escala para reflexão sobre a saúde do trabalhador enfermeiro. Método: Estudo psicométrico, dividiu-se em duas etapas: 1 - Obtenção da versão brasileira da escala Career Anchors Self-assessment Adaptação Transcultural/validade de conteúdo e de processo de resposta. 2 - Evidências de validade relacionadas à estrutura interna da versão brasileira da Career Anchors Self-assessment. Resultados: Obteve-se a versão adaptada para o contexto de enfermeiros brasileiros da área hospitalar, do instrumento denominado de Autoavaliação de Âncoras de Carreira, composto 42 itens. Quanto à avaliação das evidências de validade da estrutura interna, foram encontrados dados satisfatórios para a AFC, AFE e Confiabilidade. Uma análise reflexiva pode ser feita a partir dos resultados, o modelo teórico das âncoras de carreira, originalmente criado com o perfil de administradores indicou para o autor, oito tipos de âncoras de carreira. Porém, ao aplicar para a enfermagem, teve-se uma evidência maior nas âncoras: Segurança e Estabilidade (SEG), Senso de serviço/ Dedicação a uma causa (SER), Autonomia e Independência (AUT)/Criatividade Empreendedora (CRI) e Competência Gerencial (GER). Considerações Finais: A versão brasileira, denominada Autoavaliação das Âncoras de Carreira, tem boa qualidade de tradução e evidências de validade de conteúdo e foram encontrados valores satisfatórios para o instrumento com 08 fatores latentes, confirmando a hipótese.


Introduction: The object of the study was the Career Anchors Self-Assessment in the context of Brazilian nurses from the perspective of occupational health. Objectives: To adapt the Career Anchors Self-Assessment cross-culturally to the Brazilian context; To analyze evidence of content validity, response process and internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Career Anchors Self-Assessment in a sample of nurses; To discuss the validation of the Career Anchors Self-Assessment for the Brazilian reality and the use of the scale for reflection on the health of the nursing worker. Method: Psychometric study, divided into two stages: 1 - Obtaining the Brazilian version of the Career Anchors Self-Assessment scale Cross-cultural adaptation/content validity and response process. 2 - Evidence of validity related to the internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Career Anchors Self-Assessment. Results: The adapted version for the context of Brazilian nurses in the hospital area was obtained, of the instrument called Self-Assessment of Career Anchors, composed of 42 items. Regarding the evaluation of the evidence of validity of the internal structure, satisfactory data were found for the AFC, AFE and Reliability. A reflective analysis can be made from the results, the theoretical model of career anchors, originally created with the profile of administrators indicated for the author, eight types of career anchors. However, when applied to nursing, there was greater evidence in the anchors: Security and Stability (SEG), Sense of Service/Dedication to a Cause (SER), Autonomy and Independence (AUT)/Entrepreneurial Creativity (CRI) and Management Competence (GER). Final Considerations: The Brazilian version, called Self-Assessment of Career Anchors, has good translation quality and evidence of content validity and satisfactory values were found for the instrument with 08 latent factors, confirming the hypothesis.

(1) Background: Despite the progress made by women in the workplace, mothers still face systemic barriers that prevent them from advancing professionally. This "motherhood penalty" involves a variety of discriminatory practices and experiences that mothers can face at work, including being held to stricter standards regarding salary and recruitment. Despite ongoing research on the association between motherhood and career outcomes, few studies specifically explore how motherhood impacts career advancement and, consequently, access to leadership. This scoping review seeks to gain an understanding of how motherhood impacts women's career progression, and how interventions can address the underrepresentation of mothers in leadership. (2) Methods: Following the PRISMA-ScR framework, we analyzed 52 articles from 2010 to 2022, drawn from 10 databases. (3) Results: The results showed both negative and positive impacts of motherhood on career progression, affecting mothers' attitudes, feelings, and behaviors and yielding changes in interpersonal relationships and work conditions. Intersectionality is highlighted, urging a nuanced examination of challenges faced by mothers from a diversity of backgrounds. Recommendations for interventions include individual and institutional efforts, comprising societal support structures, organizational policy changes, and cultural shifts. (4) Conclusions: This scoping review offers an updated perspective on a classic challenge, providing practical insights for a more inclusive and structural understanding of the career trajectories of working mothers.

Microplastics (MPs) composed of different polymers with various shapes, within a vast granulometric distribution (1 µm - 5 mm) and with a wide variety of physicochemical surface and bulk characteristics spiral around the globe, with different atmospheric, oceanic, cryospheric, and terrestrial residence times, while interacting with other pollutants and biota. The challenges of microplastic pollution are related to the complex relationships between the microplastic generation mechanisms (physical, chemical, and biological), their physicochemical properties, their interactions with other pollutants and microorganisms, the changes in their properties with aging, and their small sizes that facilitate their diffusion and transportation between the air, water, land, and biota, thereby promoting their ubiquity. Early career researchers (ERCs) constitute an essential part of the scientific community committed to overcoming the challenges of microplastic pollution with their new ideas and innovative scientific perspectives for the development of remediation technologies. However, because of the enormous amount of scientific information available, it may be difficult for ERCs to determine the complexity of this environmental issue. This mini-review aims to provide a quick and updated overview of the essential insights of microplastic pollution to ERCs to help them acquire the background needed to develop highly innovative physical, chemical, and biological remediation technologies, as well as valorization proposals and environmental education and awareness campaigns. Moreover, the recommendations for the development of holistic microplastic pollution remediation strategies presented here can help ERCs propose technologies considering the environmental, social, and practical dimensions of microplastic pollution while fulfilling the current government policies to manage this plastic waste.

Objetivo: examinar la relación entre éxito en la carrera y ambiente de trabajo con enfermeras actuantes en tecnología de reproducción asistida (TRA), e identificar factores que afectan su éxito en la carrera. Método: estudio transversal realizado en 53 centros de fertilidad de 26 provincias en la China Continental. Datos recolectados utilizando cuestionario de datos demográficos, un Cuestionario de Competencias de TRA para Enfermeras Especializadas, la Career-Success Scale (Escala de éxito profesional) y la Nursing Work Environment Scale (Escala del entorno de trabajo de enfermería). Se aplicó estadística inferencial y descriptiva. Resultados: 597 enfermeras actuantes en TRA participaron en nuestra encuesta, entregando 555 cuestionarios válidos. Los puntajes generales promedio de éxito en la carrera y ambiente de trabajo fueron 3,75 (desviación estándar, [DE]=1,01) y 3,42 (DE=0,77) respectivamente. Se observó fuerte correlación positiva entre éxito en la carrera y ambiente de trabajo (r=0,742; p<0,01). La regresión múltiple mostró que la concurrencia a conferencias académicas, atención psicológica, desarrollo profesional, apoyo y cuidado, salario y bienestar constituyeron factores significantes con influencia en el éxito en la carrera. Conclusión: la concurrencia a conferencias académicas, atención psicológica y ambiente de trabajo guardan relación positiva con el éxito en la carrera. Los gestores deberían considerar formas de abordar tales factores.


Objective: to examine the relationship between career success and work environment of nurses who practice in assisted reproductive technology and to identify factors that affect career success. Method: a cross-sectional study conducted in 53 fertility centres in 26 provinces in mainland China. Data were collected using a demographic data questionnaire, a specialised nursing competence questionnaire, the Career-Success Scale, and the Nursing Work Environment Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Results: 597 assisted reproductive technology nurses participated in our survey, and 555 valid questionnaires were collected. Theoverall mean scores for career success and work environment were 3.75 [standard deviation (SD) = 1.01] and 3.42 (SD = 0.77) respectively. There was a strong positive correlation between career success and work environment (r = 0.742, p < 0.01). Multiple regression showed that attending academic conferences, psychological care, professional development, support and care, salary, and welfare were significant factors that influence career success. Conclusion: attending academic conferences, psychological care, and work environment are positively related to career success. Administrators should consider ways to address these factors.

Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário demográfico, um questionário sobre competências de enfermagem especializada em tecnologias de reprodução assistida, da Career-Success Scale (Escala de Sucesso Profissional) e da Nursing Work Environment Scale (Escala do Ambiente de Trabalho na Enfermagem). Aplicaram-se análises de estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: participaram do estudo 597 enfermeiros da área de tecnologia de reprodução assistida, e 555 questionários válidos foram coletados. As pontuações globais médias para o sucesso profissional e o ambiente de trabalho foram 3,75 [desvio padrão (DP) = 1,01] e 3,42 (DP = 0,77), respectivamente. A análise de regressão múltipla mostrou que a participação em eventos acadêmicos, a assistência psicológica, o desenvolvimento profissional, o apoio e os cuidados, e o salário e o bem-estar foram fatores que influenciaram significativamente o sucesso profissional. Conclusão: a participação em eventos acadêmicos, a assistência psicológica e o ambiente de trabalho mostraram correlação positiva com o sucesso profissional. Os gestores deveriam considerar formas de abordar esses fatores.

Introduction: Science motivation is important for students' scientific literacy. Yet, there is a lack of valid and reliable measurement tools for the Brazilian context. This study presents the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Science Motivation Questionnaire (SMQ-II) and motivational baseline data. Method: The instrument was translated into Brazilian Portuguese using cross-cultural validation procedures. For structural validity evidence, the responses of 646 secondary school students were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, as well as measurement invariance. For reliability evidence, Cronbach's alpha (a) and McDonald's omega (w) were calculated. Students' motivation was analysed using 2 (gender) x 4 (grade levels) x 3 (study modality) MANOVA. Results: 24 items measuring intrinsic motivation, career motivation, grade motivation, and self-efficacy supported a four-factor structure with adequate reliability against the original five-factor structure (self-determination was not salient). Measurement invariance was established across the gender and study modalities, but not for grade levels. Higher-grade level Brazilian students were less motivated, and girls reported higher intrinsic and career motivation, but lower self-efficacy than boys. Conclusion: These findings lay the foundation for the assessment of Brazilian students' science motivation, although they also reveal problems in the latent structure of the SMQ-II and call for the development of instruments rooted in contemporary motivational theories.


Introdução: A motivação científica é importante para a alfabetização científica dos estudantes. No entanto, há uma falta de ferramentas de medição válidas e confiáveis para o contexto brasileiro. Este estudo apresenta a versão em português brasileiro do Questionário de Motivação Científica (SMQ-II) e dados de base motivacionais. Método: O instrumento foi traduzido para o português brasileiro utilizando procedimentos de validação transcultural. Para construir provas de validade, as respostas de 646 alunos do ensino médio foram submetidas à análise exploratória e confirmatória de fatores, bem como invariância de medidas. Para a evidência de confiabilidade, foram calculados o alfa de Cronbach (a) e o ômega de McDonald's (w). A motivação dos estudantes foi analisada usando 2 (gênero) x 4 (notas) x 3 (modalidade de estudo) MANOVA. Resultados: 24 itens medindo a motivação intrínseca, motivação de carreira, motivação de grau e auto-eficácia suportaram uma estrutura de quatro fatores com confiabilidade adequada contra a estrutura original de cinco fatores (a autodeterminação não foi saliente). A invariância da medição foi estabelecida através de gênero e modalidade de estudo, mas não para o nível de nota. Os estudantes brasileiros de grau superior estavam menos motivados, e as meninas relataram maior motivação intrínseca e de carreira, mas menor auto-eficácia do que os meninos. Conclusão: Estas descobertas abrem o caminho para a avaliação da motivação científica dos estudantes brasileiros, mas também revelam problemas na estrutura latente do SMQ-II e exigem o desenvolvimento de instrumentos enraizados em teorias motivacionais contemporâneas.

O início da carreira docente é compreendido como um período intenso e desafiador para o professor. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a satisfação no trabalho dos professores de Educação Física no início da carreira docente. O estudo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa contou com a participação de 16 professores efetivos que estavam entre o 1º e 4º ano de docência nas escolas municipais e estaduais da cidade de Maringá (Paraná). Para coleta de dados foi empregada uma entrevista semiestruturada e as informações foram analisadas conforme a técnica da análise de conteúdo. Evidenciou-se que todos os grupos de professores se encontram insatisfeitos com as dimensões: venda da força de trabalho, condições de trabalho, progressão na carreira e relevância social no trabalho. A Integração Social no ambiente de trabalho foi a única dimensão a se destacar como satisfatória para todos os grupos investigados. Os professores com três e quatro anos de docência demonstraram maior satisfação no trabalho quando comparados aos demais. Os professores com um e dois anos de docência demonstraram maior insatisfação no trabalho, os quais apresentaram postura mais crítica.


El inicio de la carrera docente se entiende como un periodo intenso y desafiante para el docente. En este sentido, la investigación tiene como objetivo analizar la satisfacción laboral de los profesores de Educación Física al inicio de su carrera docente. El estudio descriptivo con enfoque cualitativo contó con la participación de 16 profesores efectivos que se desempeñaban entre los niveles de 1º y 4º año de enseñanza en escuelas municipales y estaduales de la ciudad de Maringá (Paraná). Para la recolección de datos se utilizó la entrevista semiestructurada y la información fue analizada según la técnica de análisis de contenido. Se evidenció que todos los grupos de docentes están insatisfechos con las dimensiones: venta de mano de obra, condiciones de trabajo, progresión profesional y relevancia social en el trabajo. La Integración Social en el ambiente de trabajo fue la única dimensión que se destacó como satisfactoria para todos los grupos investigados. Los docentes con tres y cuatro años de docencia demostraron mayor satisfacción laboral en comparación con los demás. Los docentes con uno y dos años de experiencia docente mostraron mayor insatisfacción en el trabajo, con una actitud más crítica.


The beginning of the teaching career is understood as an intense and challenging period for the teacher. In this sense, the research aims to analyze the job satisfaction of physical education teachers at the beginning of their teaching careers. This descriptive study with a qualitative approach involved 16 effective teachers between the 1st and 4th year of teaching in municipal and state schools in the city of Maringá (Paraná). For data collection, a semi-structured interview was used, and the information was analyzed according to the content analysis technique. It was evident that all groups of teachers are dissatisfied with the dimensions: workforce remuneration, working conditions, career progression, and social relevance at work. Social Integration in the work environment was the only dimension to stand out as satisfactory for all investigated groups. Teachers with three and four years of teaching demonstrated greater job satisfaction when compared to the others. Teachers with one and two years of teaching experience showed greater dissatisfaction at work, with a more critical attitude.

A pandemia de covid-19 demonstrou a relevância da comunicação pública da saúde e da ciência, mas também evidenciou suas fragilidades. No Brasil, como em outras partes do mundo, a desinformação foi institucionalizada, com grave impacto na saúde dos cidadãos. Após a pandemia, coloca-se o desafio de estruturar políticas públicas de comunicação para combater a desinformação e de fortalecer a carreira de comunicador público como suporte a essas políticas. A mobilização de organizações da sociedade civil ligadas ao tema produziu um projeto de Lei Geral da Comunicação Pública que tramita na Câmara dos Deputados. Também permitiu incluir o estabelecimento de uma política de comunicação para o Sistema Único de Saúde entre as diretrizes aprovadas pela 17ª Conferência Nacional de Saúde


The covid-19 pandemic demonstrated the relevance of public health and science communication, but also highlighted its weaknesses. In Brazil, as in other parts of the world, disinformation has been institutionalized, with a serious impact on the health of citizens. After the pandemic, there is a challenge of structuring public communication policies to combat disinformation and to strengthen the career of public communicator to support these policies. The mobilization of civil society organizations linked to these issues produced a public communication bill which is currently discussed in the Chamber of Deputies. It also made it possible to include the establishment of a communication policy for the Unified Health System among the guidelines approved by the 17th National Health Conference


La pandemia de covid-19 demostró la relevancia de la comunicación pública de la salud y de la ciencia, pero también puso de relieve sus debilidades. En Brasil, como en otras partes del mundo, la desinformación ha sido institucionalizada, con un grave impacto en la salud de los ciudadanos. Después de la pandemia, queda el desafío de estructurar políticas públicas de comunicación para combatir la desinformación y también de estructurar la carrera de comunicador público para apoyar estas políticas. La movilización de organizaciones de la sociedad civil vinculadas al tema ha producido un proyecto de Ley General de Comunicación Pública que se encuentra en trámite en la Cámara de Diputados. También permitió incluir el establecimiento de una política de comunicación para el Sistema Único de Salud entre las directrices aprobadas por la XVII Conferencia Nacional de Salud

Ecophysiology and herpetology share a close historical relationship, but earlier work at the interface of these disciplines was carried out in temperate regions. Tropical regions like the Neotropics exhibit the highest species richness for amphibians and reptiles, but the pace for ecophysiological research on tropical herpetofauna has been slower relative to temperate counterparts. We are a group of early-career, Latin American researchers interested in the physiological diversity exhibited by neotropical herpetofauna. As such, we have engaged in the organization of the Symposium on the Ecophysiology of Neotropical Amphibians and Reptiles (ECOPHYSHERP) to integrate the scientific community interested on these topics. ECOPHYSHERP has been held three times already within the Colombian Congress of Herpetology, and collectively it has hosted >60 contributions from researchers at 26 institutions and eight countries. Participation has been diverse in terms of gender, age, and career stage, but most participants have been young undergraduate biology students. This generation of early-career researchers is producing excellent research in a broad range of topics, but difficulties to convert this research into scientific publications may exist. Identifying and contributing in order to solve such problems are priorities for this organizing committee, and also our endeavours towards ECOPHYSHERP 4.0 in Santa Marta in 2025.

OBJECTIVE: To apply an artificial neural networks analysis (ANN) model to identify variables that predict assigned leadership and academic success in graduates of six generations of medical school. METHOD: Analytical, retrospective, comparative study. A total of 1434 graduates participated. A questionnaire was sent to them by e-mail including a voluntary participation consent. A multivariate statistical analysis using multi-layer perceptron ANN, decision trees and driver analysis was performed. RESULTS: The ANN identified seven independent variables that predicted professional success and eight for leadership in medical graduates. The decision trees identified significant differences in the variables professional performance (p = 0.000), age (p = 0.005) and continuing education activities (p = 0.034) related to professional success, and for leadership the variables gender (p = 0.000), high school grades (p = 0.042), performing clinical practice during the social service year (p = 0.002) and continuing education activities (p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The ANN identified the main independent predictor variables of professional success and leadership of the graduates. This study opens up two new lines of research little studied with the techniques of in the area of medicine.


OBJETIVO: Aplicar un modelo de análisis de redes neuronales artificiales (RNA) para identificar las variables que predicen el liderazgo asignado y el éxito académico en egresados de seis generaciones de la carrera de Medicina. MÉTODO: Estudio analítico, retrospectivo y comparativo. Participaron 1434 egresados. Se envió un cuestionario por correo electrónico que incluyó el consentimiento de participación voluntaria. Se realizó análisis estadístico multivariado mediante RNA del tipo perceptrón multicapa, árboles de decisión y análisis de impulsores. RESULTADOS: Las RNA identificaron siete variables independientes que predijeron el éxito profesional y ocho para el liderazgo en los médicos egresados. Los árboles de decisión identificaron diferencias significativas en las variables desempeño profesional (p = 0.000), edad (p = 0.005) y actividades de educación continua (p = 0.034) relacionadas con el éxito profesional, y para el liderazgo las variables sexo (p = 0.000), promedio en el bachillerato (p = 0.042), realizar práctica clínica en el servicio social (p = 0.002) y actividades de educación continua (p = 0.011). ­. CONCLUSIONES: Las RNA identificaron las principales variables independientes predictoras del éxito profesional y el liderazgo de los egresados. El estudio abre dos líneas de investigación poco estudiadas con las técnicas de RNA en el área de la medicina.

This study aimed to assess the effect of a Career Education intervention intended to promote social-emotional skills. A total of 62 students attending the 9th grade of a public school participated in this study. Data were obtained using the Inventory for the Assessment of Social and Emotional Skills (SENNA 2.0). The intervention effects were analyzed by comparing Intervention Group A (GA), Control Group (CG), and Intervention Group B (GB) and within groups. The results show statistically significant differences only between the groups and in two dimensions: Agreeableness in favor of Intervention Group A (GA) and Openness in favor of Intervention Group B (GB). These findings show the benefits an intervention program intended to promote the development of social-emotional skills can promote in Career Education. However, the small number of participants stands out in terms of limitations. Hence, studies with larger samples are needed to replicate the results. In addition, this study reveals methodological aspects to be considered in the design of Career Education programs, such as more sessions to reach more individuals and obtain more effective results over time.


Este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito de uma estratégia de intervenção em Educação para Carreira visando o desenvolvimento das habilidades socioemocionais. Participaram 62 estudantes do nono ano do Ensino Fun-damental II de uma escola pública. Os dados foram obtidos por meio do Instrumento para Avaliação de Ha-bilidades Socioemocionais (SENNA 2.0). Os efeitos da intervenção foram analisados nas comparações entre o Grupo de Intervenção (GA) e o Grupo Controle (GC), de Intervenção B (GB) e intragrupos. Os resultados mostram diferenças estatisticamente significativas apenas entre grupos e em duas dimensões: Amabilidade a favor do Grupo de Intervenção A (GA) e Abertura ao novo no Grupo de Intervenção B (GB). Tais achados mostram benefícios que o programa de intervenção para o desenvolvimento das habilidades socioemocionais pode propiciar à Educação para a Carreira. Como limitação, destaca-se o pequeno número de participantes, tornando-se necessário que estudos com amostras maiores, visando a replicação dos resultados. O estudo aponta aspectos metodológicos a serem considerados no delineamento de programas de Educação para a Carreira, com mais sessões, visando maior alcance e resultados mais efetivos ao longo do tempo.

Tales hallazgos muestran los beneficios que el programa de intervención para el desarrollo de habilidades socioemocionales puede brindar a la Educación para la Carrera. Como limitación, se destaca el pequeño número de participantes, lo que obligó a realizar estudios con una muestra mayor, con el objetivo de replicar los resultados. El estudio apunta aspectos metodológicos a ser considerados en el diseño de programas de Educación para la Carrera, con más sesiones, buscando mayor alcance y resul-tados más efectivos en el tiempo

ABSTRACT Introduction: Although not mandatory, medical residency has become a sine qua non condition for practicing in most medical specialties in Brazil. Residency programs are hosted mainly by university accredited academic centers and hospitals in the national public healthcare system, under guidance and accreditation by a national commission. Despite the importance of these programs for the development of the hematology workforce, few studies have addressed their characteristics and impact on society. Methods: We performed a comprehensive cross-sectional survey of a 35-year alumni cohort from a hematology academic residency program in Brazil. Results: In total, 86/98 (87.8%) responded to the survey. The mean age at residency completion was 28.5 years, 60.5% of the alumni were women and sixty-four (74.4%) self-declared their skin color as white. Higher rates of parental education attainment and low rates of trainee financial dependence were observed and these patterns were stable over time. While the proportion of trainees from other states increased steadily, the number of hematologists practicing in other states remained stable. Approximately half of the alumni worked both in the private and public sectors, mainly in malignant hematology and in outpatient clinics. Twenty-five percent of the alumni reported prior leadership and teaching positions, mainly as directors of transfusion services. Conclusion: Our results provide data that can be potentially useful for policymakers and curricular development in the planning of strategies concerning the future workforce of hematologists.

The shortage of physicians in rural and underserved areas is an obstacle to the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). We carried out a systematic review to analyze the effectiveness of initiatives in medical education aimed to increase the supply of physicians in rural or underserved areas. We searched for studies published between 1999 and 2019 in six databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Interventional or observational controlled studies were defined as inclusion criteria. A total of 955 relevant unique records were selected for inclusion, which resulted in the identification of 17 articles for analysis. The admission of students from rural areas associated with a rural curriculum represented 52.95% of the interventions. Medical practice after graduation in rural or underserved areas was the most evaluated outcome, representing 12 publications (70.59%). Participants of these educational initiatives were more likely to work in rural or underserved areas or to choose family medicine, with significant differences between the groups in 82.35% of the studies. Educational strategies in undergraduate and medical residencies are effective. However, it is necessary to expand these interventions to ensure the supply of physicians in rural or urban underserved areas.

Introduction: No studies have yet attempted to quantitatively measure the competencies of Brazilian student-athletes. Consequently, there are no validated measures suitable for this purpose. The aim of this research was to examine the psychometric properties and assess content validity, factorial validity and evidence based on response processes of the Brazilian version of the Dual Career Competency Questionnaire for Athletes (DCCQ-A). Methods: The Brazilian DCCQ-A was administered to 745 student-athletes (Mage = 17.3 ± 5.4; 54% female; 8% student-athletes with disabilities). Results: Content validity coefficient analysis indicated clarity of language, theoretical pertinence, and practical relevance of the Brazilian DCCQ-A items. Confirmatory factorial analysis revealed excellent goodness-of-fit indices of the 4-factor structure model. Polytomous Rasch analysis demonstrated an acceptable adjustment of the items and good organization in the item response categories. Discussion: Considering the psychometric strength of the Brazilian DCCQ-A, this instrument can contribute to the practical and research applicability of sport psychology, providing support to those involved with student-athletes' dual career by identifying their competencies and possible limitations.

Throughout the world, forensic odontology academic programmes have been designed and permeate discussions about international or local standard operational protocols, principles or guidelines requiring current technical and scientific knowledge. The heterogeneous groups of students who aim to pursue this career might have high educational and occupational aspirations that will be confronted with the labour markets. In this report, the authors briefly present aspects of the education and training that comprise the choice of a career in forensic odontology nowadays. In conclusion, the individual who opts for forensic odontology as a career must be prepared to find the confidence and resilience to practice professional skills in a unique and challenging field to comply with the society's expectation


Em todo o mundo, vários programas acadêmicos de Odontologia Legal têm sido criados e permeiam discussões sobre protocolos, princípios ou diretrizes operacionais, padrão internacional ou local, que exigem conhecimento técnico e científico atualizado. Os grupos heterogêneos de estudantes que pretendem seguir esta carreira poderão ter elevadas aspirações educativas e profissionais que serão confrontadas com os mercados de trabalho. Neste contexto, os autores apresentam brevemente aspectos da educação e formação que compõem a escolha de uma carreira em Odontologia Legal nos dias de hoje. Em conclusão, o indivíduo que opta pela Odontologia Legal como carreira deve estar preparado para encontrar confiança e resiliência para exercer habilidades profissionais em um campo único e desafiador para atender às expectativas da sociedade
