INTRODUCTION: The aim of this review is to identify common mood concerns in ICD patients and suggest brief psychological screeners essential for early detection and monitoring in patient care. AREAS COVERED: Reliable and valid psychological assessment tools are reviewed, including those specifically designed for ICD patient populations. EXPERT OPINION: Psychological assessment, in combination with cardiologic standard of care, can help overcome many barriers associated with poor implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) management and related cardiovascular outcomes. Earlier identification and treatment of mood concerns in ICD patients has been shown to improve quality of life (QOL) and patient outcomes. At this time, however, logistical challenges and time restraints, in addition to knowledge of appropriate treatment plans or referral options, remain central barriers to providing integrated, patient-centered care. Ultimately, all cardiology clinics would benefit from a collaborative care team that includes a mental health consultant or in-house psychologists who can provide consultations or referral services. Additionally, all patients that come to the clinics should complete proactive screening measures as routine component of care to assess the presence of mood concerns to improve patient outcomes and aid in treatment planning.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with advanced multiple sclerosis (MS) have complex care requirements and are more likely to use long-term facilities. This study determined the associations between mood and social care-related quality of life (SCRQOL), and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and examined the association between HRQOL and SCRQOL. METHODS: Baseline data from a cohort study were used. Patients completed questionnaires, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT), and EuroQOL 5D-5L (EQ-5D-5L) and EQ-Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS). Linear regression analyses were employed to assess the relationships between mood and both outcomes of QOL while controlling for relevant confounding factors (ßs; 95% CI). The cross-sectional association between SCRQOL and HRQOL was examined using Pearson correlation coefficients (r). RESULTS: A total of 75 patients, with a mean age of 56.1 years and a disease duration of 17.3 years, were enrolled from a long-term care facility in the Netherlands. Results showed that after controlling for confounders, HADS is an independent determinant of ASCOT (ßs = -.368; 95% CI, -.581 to -.154) and EQ-5D-5L (ßs = -.297; 95% CI, -.507 to -.087). Also, there are significant but weak correlations between ASCOT and EQ-5D-5L (r = 0.242; 95% CI, .015-.468), between ASCOT and EQ-VAS (r = 0.230; 95% CI, .003-.457) and between EQ-5D-5L and EQ-VAS (r = 0.227; 95% CI, .000-.454). CONCLUSIONS: Mood, especially the depression component, is an important determinant of both HRQOL and SCRQOL in advanced MS. Focusing on mood in health care and social care may contribute to the improvement of QOL in a broader sense.

The gut-brain axis (GBA) plays a dominant role in maintaining homeostasis as well as contributes to mental health maintenance. The pathways that underpin the axis expand from macroscopic interactions with the nervous system, to the molecular signals that include microbial metabolites, tight junction protein expression, or cytokines released during inflammation. The dysfunctional GBA has been repeatedly linked to the occurrence of anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors development. The importance of the inflammatory aspects of the altered GBA has recently been highlighted in the literature. Here we summarize current reports on GBA signaling which involves the immune response within the intestinal and blood-brain barrier (BBB). We also emphasize the effect of stress response on altering barriers' permeability, and the therapeutic potential of microbiota restoration by probiotic administration or microbiota transplantation, based on the latest animal studies. Most research performed on various stress models showed an association between anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, dysbiosis of gut microbiota, and disruption of intestinal permeability with simultaneous changes in BBB integrity. It could be postulated that under stress conditions impaired communication across BBB may therefore represent a significant mechanism allowing the gut microbiota to affect brain functions.

QUESTION: Tricyclic antidepressants are used to treat depression worldwide, but the adverse effects have not been systematically assessed. Our objective was to assess the beneficial and harmful effects of all tricyclic antidepressants for adults with major depressive disorder. STUDY SELECTION AND ANALYSIS: We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis. We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS and other sources from inception to January 2023 for randomised clinical trials comparing tricyclic antidepressants versus placebo or 'active placebo' for adults with major depressive disorder. The primary outcomes were depressive symptoms measured on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17), serious adverse events and quality of life. The minimal important difference was defined as three points on the HDRS-17. FINDINGS: We included 103 trials randomising 10 590 participants. All results were at high risk of bias, and the certainty of the evidence was very low or low. All trials only assessed outcomes at the end of the treatment period at a maximum of 12 weeks after randomisation. Meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis showed evidence of a beneficial effect of tricyclic antidepressants compared with placebo (mean difference -3.77 HDRS-17 points; 95% CI -5.91 to -1.63; 17 trials). Meta-analysis showed evidence of a harmful effect of tricyclic antidepressants compared with placebo on serious adverse events (OR 2.78; 95% CI 2.18 to 3.55; 35 trials), but the required information size was not reached. Only 2 out of 103 trials reported on quality of life and t-tests showed no evidence of a difference. CONCLUSIONS: The long-term effects of tricyclic antidepressants and the effects on quality of life are unknown. Short-term results suggest that tricyclic antidepressants may reduce depressive symptoms while also increasing the risks of serious adverse events, but these results were based on low and very low certainty evidence. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested that music listening has the potential to positively affect cognitive functions and mood in individuals with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), with a preference for self-selected music likely to yield better outcomes. However, there is insufficient clinical evidence to suggest the use of music listening in routine rehabilitation care to treat PSCI. This randomized control trial (RCT) aims to investigate the effects of personalized music listening on mood improvement, activities of daily living (ADLs), and cognitive functions in individuals with PSCI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 34 patients with PSCI were randomly assigned to either the music group or the control group. Patients in the music group underwent a three-month personalized music-listening intervention. The intervention involved listening to a personalized playlist tailored to each individual's cultural, ethnic, and social background, life experiences, and personal music preferences. In contrast, the control group patients listened to white noise as a placebo. Cognitive function, neurological function, mood, and ADLs were assessed. RESULTS: After three months of treatment, the music group showed significantly higher Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores compared to the control group (p=0.027), particularly in the domains of delayed recall (p=0.019) and orientation (p=0.023). Moreover, the music group demonstrated significantly better scores in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (p=0.008), Barthel Index (BI) (p=0.019), and Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI) (p=0.008) compared to the control group. No effects were found on mood as measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). CONCLUSION: Personalized music listening promotes the recovery of cognitive and neurological functions, improves ADLs, and reduces caregiver burden in patients with PSCI.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting the probability of aggressive behavior is crucial for guiding early intervention in patients with mood disorders. METHODS: Cox stepwise regression was conducted to identify potential influencing factors. Nomogram prediction models were constructed to predict the probabilities of aggressive behavior in patients with mood disorders, and their performance was assessed using consistency index (C-index) and calibration plots. RESULTS: Research findings on 321 patients with mood disorders indicated that being older (HR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.98), single (HR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.02-0.68), having children (one child, HR = 0.07, 95%CI: 0.01-0.87; more than one child, HR = 0.33, 95%CI: 0.04-2.48), living in dormitory (HR = 0.25, 95%CI: 0.08-0.77), non-student (employee, HR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.07-0.88; non-employee, HR = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.02-0.35), and higher scores in subjective support (HR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.82-0.99) were protective factors. On the contrary, minorities (HR = 5.26, 95% CI: 1.23-22.48), living alone (HR = 4.37, 95% CI: 1.60-11.94), having suicide history (HR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.06-5.95), and having higher scores in EPQ-E (HR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.00-1.08) and EPQ-P (HR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00-1.07) were identified as independent risk factors for aggressive behavior in patients with mood disorders. The nomogram prediction model demonstrated high discrimination and goodness-of-fit. CONCLUSIONS: A novel nomogram prediction model for the probability of aggressive behavior in patients with mood disorders was developed, effective in identifying at-risk populations and offering valuable insights for early intervention and proactive measures.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of daily whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) sessions during 5 consecutive days on wellness and sleep parameters in healthy young men and women. Twenty healthy subjects (9 women; 11 men) aged 23.1 ± 2.6 years old participated in this randomized protocol, with 5 consecutive days with (CRYO) or without WBC (CONT) exposure. Sleep was analyzed over the 5 nights in each condition. Sleep quality and quantity were assessed via actimetry, cerebral activity and questionnaires. Nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) was also recorded and questionnaires were given to assess wellness and mood. Repeated WBC exposures had a beneficial impact on mood and anxiety. It also improved subjective sleep quality (scored from 3.6 ± 0.5 pre to 3.9 ± 0.3), especially in women. Also, repeated WBC sessions modulated sleep architecture by increasing slow wave sleep duration (+7.3 ± 16.8 min) during the nights without impacting other sleep parameters, nor nocturnal HRV. In conclusion, repeated WBC seems to be an effective strategy to improve slow wave sleep duration in healthy young subjects. The reported psychological improvements may better benefit women than men.

Mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contacts (MERCs) mediate a close and continuous communication between both organelles that is essential for the transfer of calcium and lipids to mitochondria, necessary for cellular signalling and metabolic pathways. Their structural and molecular characterisation has shown the involvement of many proteins that bridge the membranes of the two organelles and maintain the structural stability and function of these contacts. The crosstalk between the two organelles is fundamental for proper neuronal function and is now recognised as a component of many neurological disorders. In fact, an increasing proportion of MERC proteins take part in the molecular and cellular basis of pathologies affecting the nervous system. Here we review the alterations in MERCs that have been reported for these pathologies, from neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders to neurodegenerative diseases. Although mitochondrial abnormalities in these debilitating conditions have been extensively attributed to the high energy demand of neurons, a distinct role for MERCs is emerging as a new field of research. Understanding the molecular details of such alterations may open the way to new paths of therapeutic intervention.

BACKGROUND: Empathy refers to the cognitive and emotional reactions of an individual to the experiences of another. Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) report severe social difficulties during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. AIMS: This clinical and functional magnetic resonance imaging study aimed to explore affective and cognitive empathy in women with PMDD, during the highly symptomatic luteal phase. METHOD: Overall, 32 women with PMDD and 20 healthy controls participated in the study. The neuroimaging data were collected using a highly empathy-engaging movie. First, we characterised the synchrony of neural responses within PMDD and healthy groups, using the inter-individual correlation approach. Next, using network cohesion analysis, we compared connectivity within and between brain networks associated with affective and cognitive empathy between groups, and assessed the association of these network patterns with empathic measures. RESULTS: A consistent, although complex, picture of empathy abnormalities was found. Patients with PMDD showed decreased neural synchrony in parietal and frontal key nodes of cognitive empathy processing (theory-of-mind network), but higher neural synchrony in the anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex, a part of the salience network, implicated in affective empathy. Positive correlations between cognitive perspective-taking scores and neural synchrony were found within the theory-of-mind network. Interestingly, during highly emotional moments, the PMDD group showed increased functional connectivity within this network. CONCLUSIONS: Similar to major depression, individuals with PMDD show enhanced affective empathy and reduced cognitive empathy. These findings echo clinical observations reported when women with PMDD have a dysregulated emotional response to negative stimuli.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and mood disorders are common in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and increase the risk of progression to dementia. Wearable devices collecting physiological and behavioral data can help in remote, passive, and continuous monitoring of moods and NPS, overcoming limitations and inconveniences of current assessment methods. In this longitudinal study, we examined the predictive ability of digital biomarkers based on sensor data from a wrist-worn wearable to determine the severity of NPS and mood disorders on a daily basis in older adults with predominant MCI. In addition to conventional physiological biomarkers, such as heart rate variability and skin conductance levels, we leveraged deep-learning features derived from physiological data using a self-supervised convolutional autoencoder. Models combining common digital biomarkers and deep features predicted depression severity scores with a correlation of r = 0.73 on average, total severity of mood disorder symptoms with r = 0.67, and mild behavioral impairment scores with r = 0.69 in the study population. Our findings demonstrated the potential of physiological biomarkers collected from wearables and deep learning methods to be used for the continuous and unobtrusive assessments of mental health symptoms in older adults, including those with MCI. BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness are associated with the occurrence of psychotic experiences. However, dynamics of these phenomena in people with subclinical experiences, commonly referred to as psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), remains largely unknown. Therefore, in this study we performed a temporal network analysis to model dynamic predictions between social isolation, loneliness, negative affect, social stress, and PLEs. METHODS: A total of 77 drug-naïve individuals with PLEs from a transdiagnostic sample were enrolled. Data were obtained using the experience sampling method (ESM). The ESM questionnaires were delivered during 7 consecutive days (6 assessments per day). Therefore, 3234 data entries were analyzed. RESULTS: Social isolation predicted next-moment emergence of PLEs through the effects on loneliness and negative affect. Also, PLEs appeared to predict next-moment loneliness, but not social isolation, through the effects on negative affect. Social stress did not predict any variables in the network. However, it was predicted by previous-moment PLEs and social isolation. Negative affect had the highest in-strength and out-strength centrality. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from the present study indicate that social isolation might predict the emergence of PLEs through the effects of momentary loneliness and negative affect. Also, loneliness might be bidirectionally associated with PLEs. Interventions targeting negative affect and social isolation might be beneficial in people with PLEs.

BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent antidepressant use increased post-pandemic, but it is unknown if this disproportionally affected those who develop post-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID) or long COVID. This study compared the risk of antidepressant initiation among children and adolescents with long COVID with those who had COVID but did not have evidence of long COVID. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study of children and adolescents aged 3-17 years at the first evidence of COVID or long COVID from October 1, 2021 through April 4, 2022 was conducted within Komodo's Healthcare Map™ database. The index date was the earliest date of a medical claim associated with a COVID (COVID comparators) or long COVID diagnosis (long COVID cases). The baseline period was six months before the index date. The outcome was antidepressant initiation within twelve months after the index date. Due to the large number of COVID relative to long COVID cases, COVID comparators were randomly selected with a ratio of 2 COVID to 1 long COVID. We used propensity score matching to control for confounding due to imbalances in the baseline covariates. Log-binomial models estimated the relative risk (RR) of antidepressant initiation in the propensity score matched sample. We conducted several sensitivity analyses to test the robustness of our findings to several assumptions. RESULTS: Our child and adolescent sample included 18 274 with COVID and 9137 with long COVID. Compared with those with COVID, a larger proportion of long COVID children and adolescents had psychiatric disorders, psychotropic use, medical comorbidities, were previously hospitalized, or visited the emergency department. In the propensity score-adjusted analysis, the long COVID group had a statistically significant higher risk of antidepressant initiation relative to the COVID comparator (adjusted-RR: 1.40, 95% CI = 1.20, 1.62). Our findings were robust across sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: The increased risk of antidepressant initiation following long COVID warrants further study to better understand the underlying reasons for this higher risk. Emerging evidence of long COVID's impact on child mental health has important implications for prevention and early interventions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: WATSU (Water-Shiatsu) is a body-oriented therapy in warm-water pool with passive movements, massage and breathing techniques. The present study investigated the short-term effect of a single session of WATSU on body awareness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a randomized-controlled study 60 volunteers (18-65 years) were assigned to a 20-min intervention of WATSU or to a 20-min lecture on WATSU. Immediately before and after the intervention they had to answer questionnaires. Primary endpoint of the investigation was the change of the total score of the non-verbal Awareness Body Chart (ABC). Secondary endpoints were the changes of the scores of the 14 single body parts of the ABC, of the Visual Analogue Pain Scale, of a German self-perception questionnaire (KEKS) and changes in mood scored with a German questionnaire on mood (Bf-SR). To compare groups, Mann-Whitney U tests were used. RESULTS: The WATSU group had a significantly higher increase in the ABC total score in comparison to the lecture group (WATSU: 0.3 (IQR 0 - 0.8), lecture: 0.1 (IQR -0.2 - 0.2), p = 0.014). In the KEKS no group differences were seen. In WATSU a significantly stronger improvement of pain (Visual Analogue Pain Scale: WATSU: -15 (IQR -29 to -8), lecture: -4 (IQR -9 - 2), p < 0.001) and of mood (Bf-SR: WATSU: -6 (IQR -14 to -2), lecture: -1 (IQR -5 - 1), p = 0.003) could be observed. CONCLUSION: This study showed that WATSU immediately increases body awareness and improves pain and mood.

Body positive social media content, and especially content that does not contain photos of bodies, has been shown to be helpful for body image compared to idealized social media content. However, body positive content is heterogenous and little is known regarding which types of content may be most helpful. This study examined self-reported body image and mood effects of different types of body positive content among women. A sample of 176 women, mean (SD) age = 21.77 (2.35) was recruited. Participants viewed body positive stimuli that were grouped into 14 different categories to represent the heterogenous nature of this social media content, including a text only category. Each image was rated in terms of its perceived effect on body image and mood. Findings suggested that the text-only category was rated most highly in terms of generating positive feelings towards the body and positive affect. Moreover, the comparative benefit of the text-only category was larger among women with higher BMI, and participants reporting closer proximity to the images, although not consistently across outcomes. Further work focused on understanding the effects of different types of body positive content is warranted.

BACKGROUND: People with psychosis and mood disorders experience disruptions in working memory; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. We focused on two potential mechanisms: first, poor attentional engagement should be associated with elevated levels of pre-stimulus alpha-band activity within the EEG, whereas impaired working memory encoding should be associated with reduced post-stimulus alpha suppression. METHODS: We collected EEG data from 68 people with schizophrenia, 43 people with bipolar disorder with a history of psychosis, and 53 people with major depressive disorder, as well as 90 healthy comparison subjects (HCS), while they completed a spatial working memory task. We quantified attention lapsing, memory precision, and memory capacity from the behavioral responses, and we quantified alpha using both traditional wavelet analysis as well as a novel approach for isolating oscillatory alpha power from aperiodic elements of the EEG signal. RESULTS: We found that (1) greater pre-stimulus alpha power estimated using traditional wavelet analysis predicted behavioral errors; (2) post-stimulus alpha suppression was reduced in the patient groups; and (3) reduced suppression was associated with lower likelihood of memory storage. However, we also observed that pre-stimulus alpha was larger among HCS compared to patients, and single-trial analyses showed that it was the aperiodic elements of the pre-stimulus EEG-not oscillatory alpha-that predicted behavioral errors. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that working memory impairments in serious mental illness primarily reflect an impairment in the post-stimulus encoding processes rather than reduced attentional engagement prior to stimulus onset.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults in care homes experienced some of the highest rates of mortality from SARS-CoV-2 globally and were subjected to strict and lengthy non-pharmaceutical interventions, which severely impacted their daily lives. The VIVALDI ASCOT and Ethnography Study aims to assess the impact of respiratory outbreaks on care home residents' quality of life, psychological well-being, loneliness, functional ability and use of space. This study is linked to the VIVALDI-CT, a randomised controlled trial of staff's asymptomatic testing and sickness payment support in care homes (ISRCTN13296529). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a mixed-methods, longitudinal study of care home residents (65+) in Southeast England. Group 1-exposed includes residents from care homes with a recent COVID-19 or other respiratory infection outbreak. Group 2-non-exposed includes residents from care homes without a recent outbreak. The study has two components: (a) a mixed-methods longitudinal face-to-face interviews with 100 residents (n=50 from group 1 and n=50 from group 2) to assess the impact of outbreaks on residents' quality of life, psychological well-being, loneliness, functional ability and use of space at time 1 (study baseline) and time 2 (at 3-4 weeks after the first visit); (b) ethnographic observations in communal spaces of up to 10 care homes to understand how outbreaks and related restrictions to the use of space and social activities impact residents' well-being. The study will interview only care home residents who have the mental capacity to consent. Data will be compared and integrated to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of outbreaks on residents' quality of life and well-being. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The VIVALDI ASCOT and Ethnography Study obtained ethical approval from the Health Research Authority (HRA) Social Care REC (24/IEC08/0001). The menopause transition is an important period in a woman's life, during which she is at an increased risk of mood disorders. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuations during the menopausal transition and very low levels of estradiol after menopause have a profound effect on the central nervous system (CNS), causing an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory inputs. Changes in neurotransmission and neuronal interactions that occur with estradiol withdrawal disrupt the normal neurological balance and may be associated with menopausal symptoms. Hot flushes, depressed mood and anxiety are all symptoms of menopause that are a consequence of the complex changes that occur in the CNS, involving many signaling pathways and neurotransmitters (i.e. γ-aminobutyric acid, serotonin, dopamine), neurosteroids (i.e. allopregnanolone), and neuropeptides (i.e. kisspeptin, neurokinin B). All these pathways are closely linked, and the complex interactions that exist are not yet fully understood. This review summarizes the neuroendocrine changes in the CNS during the menopausal transition, with particular emphasis on those that underlie mood changes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with anxiety and depression and the care-seeking behaviour among Nepalese population. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: Secondary analysis of the data from nationally representative Nepal Demographic and Health Survey 2022. PARTICIPANTS: Analysed data of 12 355 participants (7442 females and 4913 males) aged 15-49 years. OUTCOME MEASURES: Depression and anxiety were assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7) tools, respectively. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: We performed weighted analysis to account for the complex survey design. We presented categorical variables as frequency, per cent and 95% confidence interval (CI), whereas numerical variables were presented as median, inter-quartile range (IQR) and 95% CI. We performed univariate and multivariable logistic regression to determine factors associated with anxiety and depression, and results were presented as crude OR (COR), adjusted OR (AOR) and their 95% CI. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression and anxiety were 4.0% (95% CI 3.5 to 4.5) and 17.7% (95% CI 16.5 to 18.9), respectively. Divorced or separated participants were found to have higher odds of developing anxiety (AOR 2.40, 95% CI 1.74 to 3.31) and depression (AOR 3.16, 95% CI 1.84 to 5.42). Among ethnic groups, Janajati had lower odds of developing anxiety (AOR 0.77, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.92) and depression (AOR 0.67, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.93) compared with Brahmin/Chhetri. Regarding disability, participants with some difficulty had higher odds of developing anxiety (AOR 1.81, 95% CI 1.56 to 2.10) and depression (AOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.51 to 2.49), and those with a lot of difficulty had higher odds of anxiety (AOR 2.09, 95% CI 1.48 to 2.96) and depression (AOR 2.04, 95% CI 1.06 to 3.90) compared with those without any disability. Among those who had symptoms of anxiety or depression, only 32.9% (95% CI 30.4 to 34.4) sought help for the conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Marital status and disability status were positively associated with anxiety and depression, whereas Janajati ethnicity had relatively lower odds of experiencing anxiety and depression. It is essential to develop interventions and policies targeting females and divorced individuals to help reduce the burden of anxiety and depression in Nepal.

RÉSUMÉ

MoodCapture presents a novel approach that assesses depression based on images automatically captured from the front-facing camera of smartphones as people go about their daily lives. We collect over 125,000 photos in the wild from N=177 participants diagnosed with major depressive disorder for 90 days. Images are captured naturalistically while participants respond to the PHQ-8 depression survey question: "I have felt down, depressed, or hopeless". Our analysis explores important image attributes, such as angle, dominant colors, location, objects, and lighting. We show that a random forest trained with face landmarks can classify samples as depressed or non-depressed and predict raw PHQ-8 scores effectively. Our post-hoc analysis provides several insights through an ablation study, feature importance analysis, and bias assessment. Importantly, we evaluate user concerns about using MoodCapture to detect depression based on sharing photos, providing critical insights into privacy concerns that inform the future design of in-the-wild image-based mental health assessment tools.

The significance of physiological regulation in relation to behavioral and emotional regulation is well documented, but primarily in economically advantaged contexts. Few studies have been conducted in low- and middle-income countries. We investigated the feasibility and reliability of measuring autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and behavior during challenge tasks in 30 children aged 8-10 years in Ghana during two visits, 1 week apart. Completeness of ANS data ranged from 80% to 100% across all tasks. There was low-to-moderate test-retest reliability of video mood induction (VMI) emotion ratings and balloon analog risk task (BART) pumps (r = 0.34-0.52). VMI elicited higher targeted emotion ratings in Visit 2 than Visit 1. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was higher, and pre-ejection period (PEP) was longer at Visit 2 than Visit 1 for baseline and both tasks. RSA was higher at baseline than during the VMI anger scene at Visit 1, whereas PEP was shorter at baseline than during all VMI emotion scenes at Visit 2. RSA was higher at baseline than during BART at both visits. In conclusion, ANS data collection within evocative and arousing challenge tasks was feasible in Ghana, and the tasks were generally reliable and effective in eliciting target emotions and risk-taking behavior in this sample.
