This work aimed to evaluate the selectivity of the herbicide metsulfuron applied at different times on the development of soybeans grown in soils with different characteristics. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a factorial scheme (4 x 4), with four replicates. Factor A was application time (0, 15, 30, and 45 days before sowing, DBS) and factor B was soil type (Erechim, Itaqui, Piratini, and Santa Maria). Soybean plants cultivated in the Erechim soil showed moderate phytotoxicity, with greater damage to the leaf area and plant dry matter, mainly after application at 30 DBS. Those cultivated in Itaqui soil showed gradual phytotoxicity between 14 and 28 days after emergence (DAE). Soybean plants grown in the Piratini and Santa Maria soils showed the highest phytotoxicity and photosynthetic reduction, mainly at 15 and 0 DBS. Metsulfuron application at 45 DBS caused reduced plant growth by up to 40%, and reduced shoot development (30%) in soybean plants grown in Piratini and Santa Maria soils, respectively. There were gradual changes in phytotoxicity and the morphophysiological traits of soybean plants exposed to the residual effect of metsulfuron in different soils, which indicates that soybeans should be sown more than 45 days after the application of metsulfuron, regardless of soil characteristics.

The addition of organic wastes is a common agronomic practice in some Mediterranean regions to increase soil organic matter. In addition, they consume high amounts of agrochemicals. Hand-packed soil columns were used to evaluate the effect of three different composted organic soil amendments (agro-forestry, agro-industrial and animal manure) on the leachability of eight persistent herbicides. A new leaching index based on the amounts recovered from leachates and referred as Experimental Leaching Index (ELI) is proposed according to the mean annual precipitation in a specific place. This index is compared with others such as Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS), Relative Leaching Potential Index (RLPI) and Leachability Index (LIX), which only include degradation (DT50) and sorption (KOC) parameters. According to ELI, metribuzin is very mobile in all cases, while terbuthylazine, chlorotoluron and isoproturon present high leachability only in unamended soil reducing their leaching potential in amended soils. Aclonifen, oxyfluorfen, trifluralin and pendimethalin behave in all cases as immobile (non-leacher) compounds.

BACKGROUND: Strigolactones play an important role in the rhizosphere as signalling molecules stimulating the seed germination of parasitic weed seeds and hyphal branching of arbuscular micorrhiza, and also act as hormones in plant roots and shoots. Strigolactone derivatives, e.g. strigolactams, could be used as suicidal germination inducers in the absence of a host crop for the decontamination of land infested with parasitic weed seeds. RESULTS: We report the stereoselective synthesis of novel strigolactams, together with some of their critical physicochemical properties, such as water solubility, hydrolytic stability, as well as their short soil persistence. In addition, we show that such strigolactams are potent germination stimulants of O. cumana parasitic weed seeds and do not affect the seed germination and the root growth of sunflower. CONCLUSIONS: The novel strigolactam derivatives described here compare favourably with the corresponding GR-28 strigolactones in terms of biological activity and physicochemical properties. However, we believe strigolactone and strigolactam derivatives require further structural optimisation to improve their soil persistence to demonstrate a potential for agronomical applications. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.
