ABSTRACT Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of nutrition education given to persons with multiple sclerosis and their families on anthropometric and biochemical measurements and diet quality. Methods: Data from 51 persons with multiple sclerosis were analysed in this intervention study. The study was conducted with 3 groups. The education group consisted of only persons with multiple sclerosis, the family education group consisted of persons with multiple sclerosis and a family member living with them, and the control group consisted of persons with multiple sclerosis who had not received an education. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements and dietary quality assessments were made before (T1) and immediately after education (T2) and also 3 months after education (follow-up, T3). Results: The distribution of family education group diet quality scores showed a significant increase from "poor" to "needs improvement" at T3 compared to T1. The upper middle arm circumference measurements of the female control group were decreased at T2 and T3 [from 29.0 (23-34) cm to 28.0 (22-31) cm and to 27.5 (22-31) cm]. Women in family education group, levels of serum haemoglobin and haematocrit were higher than in control group at T2 and T3. Also, men in family education group, levels of alanine aminotransferase were lower than those in education group at follow up. Levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in education group were higher than those control group at T1, T2, and T3. Conclusion: This study indicates that nutrition education affects some biochemical and anthropometric measurements in persons with multiple sclerosis. Diet quality improved when receiving education together with families.

Introduction: excessive concern about weight and body shape in Eating Disorders (ED) lead to obsessive checking and/or body avoidance behaviors. There is consensus that weight is a fundamental element in the treatment of eating disorders, however multiple approaches coexist in weighing. Objectives: to describe how weighing is addressed in the treatment of patients with ED Materials and method: the study consists of a descriptive bibliographic review. Scientific publications were included through the updated database search: Scielo, Lilacs and Pubmed, from 2010 to 2020. Search descriptors were: "body weight and eating disorders/eating disorders" and "treatment, eating disorders and body weight". Results: out of the bibliographic search, 14 international articles of descriptive design were included. The sample groups of the studies were diverse, including students, athletes, patients, control group and professionals, with a sample size of 2287 participants and 24 institutions specialized in eating disorders. No study identified the professional in charge of weighing the patient. 75% of the articles that described the weighing modality chose blind weighing at the beginning of the treatment and the rest opted for open weighing, using it as exposure therapy. All the professionals modified the weighing modality according to the patient's anxiety level and the treatment time. Patients preferred blind weighing as beneficial for their treatment. 90% of the studies showed that individuals who self-weighed more frequently initiated binge eating and compensatory behaviors earlier. Conclusion: evidence-based treatments do not consensually address how the patient is weighed, and the recommendations vary according to therapies and time period. The therapeutic utility of ED weighing is essential to assess risk, alert to changes in food intake, and to reduce anxiety. However, it is necessary to approach it with professionalism and interdiscipline to reduce the impact on behaviors harmful to health and psychopathology. More studies are recommended to help build common criteria and regional consensus guidelines to improve the treatment of ED(AU).

The ability of an individual to withstand random perturbations during its development is considered a good indicator of environmental and genetic stress. A common means of assessing developmental stability is through analysis of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in bilateral traits. Tortoises, with their large, solid plastron, allow for measurement of body geometry. Their bilateral shell scutes are ideal candidates for asymmetries researches. With this issue in mind we assessed, as a preliminary study, levels of plastron scute asymmetry in a sample of 46 red-footed tortoise Chelonoidis carbonaria from Arauca, N Colombia. We found significative fluctuating asymmetry (FA) but no directional asymmetry, the former not increasing with carapace size and thus indicating that tortoise shells do not become increasingly asymmetrical with age, or in other words, signaling that FA is not being influenced by pholidosis (variability of scale cover mosaic according to the development of the scutes). Asymmetry in plastron shape, although not necessarily apparent at first glance, varied, with gender with males exhibiting higher levels of FA than females. Although we can not identify the potential sources of variation responsible for the observed patterns of developmental instability, we consider this detected form of asymmetry due to unfavorable environmental conditions.(AU)

The hypothesis tested was that it is possible to identify animals that deposit fat and muscle earlier through indirect evaluation. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of visual evaluation of precocity score for the identification of Nelore heifers with an early biotype. Eighteen Nelore heifers aged 9 to 11 months were evaluated visually for body structure (S), precocity (P), and muscle (M) scores. The animals were divided according to precocity scores: animals with scores 4, 5 and 6 were classified as early biotype and those with scores 1, 2 and 3 as late biotype. Loin eye area (LEA) and subcutaneous (SFT) and picanha (biceps femoris muscle) fat thickness (PFT) were measured by ultrasonography. Animals classified as precocious received higher scores (P≤0.05) for S (5.1 vs 2.4) and M (4.4 vs 2.6), which resulted in heavier animals (233.2 vs 202.8 kg). No biotype effect (P≥0.05) was observed for LEA (36.5 cm2), but animals classified as precocious had higher (P≤0.05) SFT (1.3 vs 0.5 cm) and PFT (2.9 vs 2.3 cm). The standardized canonical coefficients showed that PFT (0.78) and the M (-1.02) score are the variables that most affect the first canonical variable positively and negatively, respectively. The first canonical variable explained 100% of the total variation in the traits evaluated. The precocity score was found to be an efficient alternative for the identification of precocious individuals. Animals with an early biotype were better differentiated by fat thickness in the biceps femoris and by muscle development of the animal.(AU)

The potential of reproducibility and repeatability of a semi-automatic system of radiographic measurement was evaluated. For this purpose, the vertebral heart score (VHS) and normalized cardiac area (NCA) were evaluated in radiographs of healthy poodles and of patients with mitral regurgitation. Considering the subjective aspect of the cardiac silhouette analysis by different observers, it is believed that even with a semi-automatic system this evaluation could be affected by the previous experience of the observer in radiodiagnosis. Fifty seven thoracic images were analyzed by two groups of observers with different levels of experience in radiology: (A) without experience (n = 2) and (B) with experience (n = 2). Regardless of radiodiagnostic experience it was observed good repeatability and reproducibility for VHS, and also for ACN in observers with experience in radiodiagnostics and previous familiarity with the software.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the accuracy of the fitted Gompertz and von Bertalanffy models for male and female Guzerá cattle, respectively. Four production regions in Northeast Brazil were included in the models as a fixed effect, and the animals were included as a random effect. In addition, the coefficients of the growth models in the production regions were compared. The accuracy of the fit equations was assessed with the Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, mean absolute deviation, mean squared error, and coefficient of determination. Confidence intervals were used for comparing the production regions. The Guzerá males in the Gado-Algodão and Serra Geral da Bahia production regions were statistically equal in asymptotic weight, and the animals in the Itapetinga-Valadares and Mata-Agreste regions had equivalent maturity rates. The Guzerá females in the Itapetinga-Valadares and Serra Geral da Bahia regions had the same asymptotic weight. The maturity rates in Itapetinga-Valadares were equal to those estimated for Mata-Agreste and Serra Geral da Bahia. The inclusion of the fixed effect of the production region and the random effect of the animals in the models improved the fit quality and increased the possibility of generating growth curves for each region.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Due to a clinical and public health interest of neck circumference (NC), a better understanding of this simple anthropometric measurement, as a valid marker of body composition is necessary. METHODS: A total of 119 young healthy adults participated in this study. NC was measured over the thyroid cartilage and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the neck. Body weight, height, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference were measured. A Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan was used to determine fat mass, lean mass, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Additionally, body mass index (BMI) and triponderal mass index (TMI), the waist to hip and waist to height ratios, and the fat mass and lean mass indexes (FMI and LMI, respectively) were calculated. RESULTS: NC was positively associated in women (W) and men (M), with BMI (rW = 0.70 and rM = 0.84, respectively), TMI (rW = 0.63 and rM = 0.80, respectively), WC (rW = 0.75 and rM = 0.86, respectively), VAT (rW = 0.74 and rM = 0.82, respectively), Waist/hip (rW = 0.51 and rM = 0.67, respectively), Waist/height (rW = 0.68 and rM = 0.83, respectively) and FMI (rW = 0.61 and rM = 0.81, respectively). The association between NC and indicators of body composition was however weaker than that observed by BMI, TMI, WC and Waist/height in both women and men. It is of note that in women, NC was associated with FMI, VAT and LMI independently of BMI. In men, adding NC to anthropometric variables did not improve the prediction of body composition, while slight improvements were observed in women. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, the present study provides no indication for NC as a useful proxy of body composition parameters in young adults, yet future studies should explore its usefulness as a measure to use in combination with BMI, especially in women.

Although we can not identify the potential sources of variation responsible for the observed patterns of developmental instability, we consider this detected form of asymmetry due to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Animals with an early biotype were better differentiated by fat thickness in the biceps femoris and by muscle development of the animal.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the bulbospongiosus muscle (BSM) in patients with bulbar urethral strictures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 21 patients divided into 2 groups: Stricture Group (nâ¯=â¯14; mean ageâ¯=â¯62.00 years) with bulbar stricture submitted to open urethroplasty; and Control Group (nâ¯=â¯7; mean ageâ¯=â¯60.14 years) with penile strictures (hypospadias cripples, penile cancer and/or penile infection) who were submitted to perineal urethrostomy. Samples of the BSM were dissected and histologic sections were stained by histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. Histomorphometric analyzes were performed on photomicrographs. Means were statistically compared using the unpaired Student t test and the Mann-Whitney test (P <.05). RESULTS: The etiology of bulbar urethral stricture was idiopathic in 2 cases (14.29%), post-TURP in 6 (42.86%), post open radical prostatectomy in 5 (35.71%) and post open prostatectomy in 1 case (7.14%). The average length of the stricture was 2.08 cm. The only parameter analyzed with significant difference between the groups was the vessels (significant difference between the control group: 5.11 ± 1.98% and stricture group: 3.57 ± 1.32%, Pâ¯=â¯.0460). The quantitative analysis of collagen (Control Group: 10.63 ± 5.37% and Stricture Group: 10.83 ± 4.55%, Pâ¯=â¯.9296); diameter of BSM muscle fibers (Control Group: 41.71 ± 14.63 µm and Stricture Group: 40.11 ± 8.59 µm, Pâ¯=â¯.76 and elastic system fibers (Control Group; 3.83 ± 1.54% and Stricture Group: 5.43 ± 2.90%, Pâ¯=â¯.2601) showed no significant difference. CONCLUSIONS: Histologic analysis showed a significant decrease of the BSM vessels in urethral stricture, without changes in elastic fibers, collagen, nerves, and muscle fiber diameter. These findings show that the bulbar urethral stricture causes minimal alterations in the structure of the BSM.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if ulnar variance can be evaluated by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and if this measure can be used as a reliable indicator when correlated to the gold standard technique, conventional radiography (CR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January to July 2018, the MR images of 64 participants, comprising 66 wrists (mean age 34.9 years; 33 females; 31 males), were obtained. Among those, 29 were referred for evaluation of the wrist for different medical reasons and 35 were asymptomatic volunteers from our radiology group. All subjects had a plain radiography of the wrist in a posteroanterior view with a mean interval between images of 1 day. Local ethics committee approved the study and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Two musculoskeletal radiologists evaluated the images. Correlation coefficients and a linear regression model were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Intra- and inter-observer analyses were performed for both diagnostic methods with results showing concordance (intra-observer: kappa score: MR 0.915/CR 0.931; p < 0.05; inter-observer: kappa score: MR 0.857/CR 0.931; p < 0.05). The intraclass correlations of MR and CR to evaluate agreement between the radiologists was slightly higher for radiologist #1 (0.771) than for radiologist #2 (0.659). A linear regression model showed good model fit indicating that MR does correlate with the ulnar variance as measured by CR (CR = 0.554 + 0.897 × MR, R2 = 0.665). CONCLUSION: Although CR is the gold standard method for the evaluation of ulnar variance, our study demonstrated that MR can be used as a reliable qualitative option.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Cuba, there is no consensus about what value of the waist-hip ratio must be considered as a risk to identify dysglycemia. Objectives: To determine the cut-off point of the waist-hip ratio as a predictor of dysglycemias for both sexes, in people suspected of suffering from diabetes mellitus. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with 975 people, including 523 women and 452 men. The sample was not obtained from general population and it was not random. The subjects underwent interrogation, physical examination and complementary studies. There were identified frequency distributions of qualitative and quantitative variables. It was used for the statistical processing the Pearson's correlation coefficient, logistic regression analysis and the curves analysis called Receiver Operator Characteristic. It was used the chi-square test to assess the statistical significance. Results: In both sexes, it was observed a directly proportional and significant correlation between the waist-hip ratio and the different variables studied, including: fasting and after 2 hours glycemia, fasting insulinemia, triglycerides, uric acid and the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR). Cholesterol behaved the same way in men, but in women there was a weak and not significant correlation. The optimal cut-point of the waist-hip ratio, as an independent predictor of dysglycemia, was 0.85 in women and 0.93 in men. The waist-hip ratio presented a good predictive power to identify subjects with and without dysglycemia for both sexes and it was higher than that of the age. Conclusions: The optimal cut-point of the waist-hip ratio, as an independent predictor of dysglycemia, was 0.85 in women and 0.93 in men. Its power as predictor of dysglycemia was good(AU)

The study's objectives: compare self-report measures of weight and height with direct measures; assess the impact of these discrepancies on body mass index (BMI) and prevalence of overweight and obesity; and apply correction models to the self-report measures and assess the degree of improvement in the corrected measures produced with the use of these models. A cross-sectional study was performed, assessing 4,151 adults (18 to 60 years) participating in the São Paulo Megacity Epidemiological Study. Linear regression models stratified by sex were proposed for correction of self-reported measures. Agreement was assessed with the intraclass correlation coefficient for the direct measures, self-report measures, and corrected measures, and kappa coefficient for BMI classification categories. Self-reported weight and the resulting BMI were underestimated, while height was overestimated, compared to direct measures. With all the correction models, the corrected measures were closer to the direct measures. Prevalence rates for excess weight, calculated by self-report measures, were underestimated by 24% in men and by 28% in women; with corrections, the underestimation decreased to 8% and 10%, respectively. The results showed moderate agreement for self-report measures and substantial agreement for corrected measures compared to direct measures. The use of correction equations for self-report data proved to be a useful method for producing more trustworthy estimates of prevalence of overweight and obesity in the general population, usually estimated from self-report measures of weight and height in population surveys.

PURPOSE: To identify and determine variations on eye distance in patients with bilateral nasal polyposis (BNP) compared to a healthy control group. METHODS: This is a case-control study that included 20 BNP patients and 40 healthy controls. We included all patients with BNP confirmed by pathology and a computed tomography scan. A healthy control group was admitted, filtered by the exclusion criteria of nasal polyposis, craniofacial malformations, and encephalocele. Paranasal sinus CT scans were performed in all participants, and two measures were evaluated, the interoptic (soft tissue) and the interzygomatic (bone structure) distances. RESULTS: A total of 20 BNP subjects, 13 (65%) male and 7 (35%) female, with a mean age of 38.8 years, and 40 healthy controls, 16 (40%) male and 24 (60%) female with a mean age of 43.2 years, were included. The mean interoptic distance was 69.7 mm (71.9 mm men, 66.4 mm women) and interzygomatic distance was 103.1 mm (104.5 mm men, 100.6 mm women). A significant increase of the interoptic (p < 0.001) and interzygomatic (p < 0.002) measurements was found in patients with polyposis compared to the controls. In the receptor operative curve analysis, the interoptic distance had an area under a curve of 96% and the threshold that maximizes the sensitivity and specificity was 59.85 mm (sensitivity 90%, specificity 95%, PPV 90%, NPV 95%). CONCLUSIONS: An increase in ocular and orbital distances was identified in patients with BNP. Polyposis may be identified by measuring eye separation. The established cut point distance identifies patients that may benefit from follow-up. Further research in this study line is suggested.
