ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: With the current trend of increasing noncommunicable diseases (NCD), like hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidaemia worldwide and in Malaysia, a comprehensive study is essential to find the local population's knowledge, attitude and practice towards NCD. Little is known about the indigenous people of Orang Asli's health conditions and health-seeking behaviours towards these chronic diseases. The study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) status towards non-communicable disease and its association with demographic background among Orang Asli adults of the Semelai subgroup in central Pahang, Malaysia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 251 adult Semelai people in Bera district, Pahang. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews to obtain socio-demographic data, KAP towards NCD. Bivariate analysis was performed to test the association between the socio-demographic factor and the KAP score. RESULTS: Among respondents, 57.4% were female, 82.5% were married, and 46.2% completed primary school. The majority were animism believers (83.3%), self-employed (75.3%) and earning less than RM1000 (87.6%). The respondents' ages ranged from 18 to 77, with a mean age of 41.1 (S.D ± 13.9). The prevalence of known type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and dyslipidaemia was 9.6%, 20.7%, and 8.8%, respectively. About 23.1% of respondents have a family history of chronic disease. Regarding KAP parameters, only 12.7% have good knowledge, and 35.5% have good practice in prevention and treatment. However, more than half (59.8%) have a positive attitude towards chronic diseases. This study also showed that higher household income and education levels were positively associated with higher scores of KAP (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study presented a low-to-moderate percentage of Orang Asli who have good KAP towards NCD. KAP levels were significantly associated with education levels and household income. Hence, improving education and poverty in the Orang Asli community may successively increase the knowledge level, impart a positive attitude towards NCDs, and improve the practice level toward treatment and prevention.

ABSTRACT

Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) represents a common distressing problem in patients with end-stage renal disease. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of omega-3 supplementation in the treatment of CKD-aP. MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Scopus databases were searched systematically for articles published from inception until May 21, 2024. Outcomes were pruritus severity at the end of the study or its change from baseline (primary) and intervention-related adverse effects (secondary). Results were pooled as standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR) for numeric and dichotomous outcomes, respectively, along with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Eight studies were included. Treatment with omega-3 fatty acids showed a significantly lower severity of CKD-aP at the end of treatment (pooled SMD (95% CI) = -1.03 (-1.85, -0.22), p = 0.024) and changed from baseline (pooled SMD (95% CI) = -0.93 (-1.57, -0.28), p = 0.014). Omega-3 supplementation reduced the risk of CKD-aP (pooled RR (95% CI) = 0.68 (0.12, 3.81), p = 0.661). Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation appears to be a promising effective and safe treatment for CKD-aP. However, the included studies had several limitations that warrant further high-quality studies to elucidate its effect and investigate the causes of non-response in patients who did not improve.

Objective: Premarital screening is one of the most important strategies for preventing infectious diseases such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus in populations. This study aims to explore the prevalence of these viruses and their association with potential demographic factors among individuals undergoing premarital screening in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study design using the National Healthy Marriage Program electronic registry in the Saudi Ministry of Health. Patients were selected from the premarital screening tests for the three blood-borne viruses. Data were obtained from January to August 2021 among 114,740 individuals. Results: Hepatitis B virus infection showed the highest prevalence followed by hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency viruses. Among those who were infected, men had higher infectious disease prevalence than women. The central and western regions had the highest percentages of infection. Conclusion: The studied infections pose a continuous public health issue among premarital screening individuals in Saudi Arabia. This study identified important demographic risk factors for these diseases and highlighted the need for future strategies and long-term plans at the national level.

ABSTRACT

Background: Understanding the relationship between aging and postoperative complications is critical because it may influence how the condition is managed. The safety of thyroidectomy in the older age group is debated in literature. All previous studies were conducted outside of the Middle East, and there is a scarcity of data in the literature describing the relationship between age and postoperative outcomes after thyroidectomy. This study aimed to compare the clinical trends of patients undergoing thyroidectomy between younger and older age groups. Methodology: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 3 tertiary care centers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Our inclusion criteria consisted of patients of all ages of both sexes who underwent thyroidectomy. Patients were divided into 2 age groups, <60 years and ≥60 years. Chi-square test and independent t test were used to evaluate the differences between qualitative and continuous variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed with postoperative complications and length of hospitalization as the dependent variables. Results: A total of 798 patients were included in this study. The <60 years age group was comprised of 81% female patients and 19% male patients, compared to 63.4% female patients and 36.6% male patients in the ≥60 years age group (P < .001). The ≥60 years age group had a statistically significant longer mean postoperative length of hospitalization (5.37 ± 7.21 days) compared to the <60 age group (3.33 ± 4.24 days; P = .003). A total of 14.4% of the patients in the <60 years age group developed at least one postoperative complication compared to 17.9% of the patients in the ≥60 years age group (P = .385). Seroma and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury occurred more commonly in the ≥60 years age group compared to the <60 years age group with a statistically significant difference (P = .003 and P < .001, respectively). In contrast, hypocalcemia occurred more commonly in patients of the <60 years age group with a statistically significant difference (P = .044). These findings were further verified by multivariate logistic regression after adjustment for gender, type of procedure, and type of diagnosis. Conclusion: In our region, the overall risk of developing postoperative complications was not different between the younger and older age groups. However, certain complications were more likely to develop in the older age group which requires vigilance from surgeons performing thyroidectomy. Likewise, the length of hospitalization was significantly longer in the older population. Awareness of complications and challenges of thyroidectomy in the older age group is crucial to improve care.

ABSTRACT

Mentha arvensis is an herbaceous plant commonly known as peppermint or Japanese mint. This study investigated the toxic potential and repellent efficacy of M. arvensis essential oil (MaEO) at varying concentrations (15.625-250 mg/mL) in Nauphoeta cinerea, along with its impact on biochemical parameters in N. cinerea. The potential of the major compounds as a new analgesic target was investigated using molecular docking. The essential oil was analyzed by gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the toxic potential, repellent property, and changes in lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels were evaluated as markers of oxidative stress. GC-MS results revealed that the main components were oxygenated monoterpenes such as menthol (71.31%), mentone (13.34%) and isomentone (5.35%). MaEO significantly reduced lipid peroxidation (LPO), the levels of non-protein thiols and iron(II) at the concentration of 125 mg/mL in N. cinerea. Furthermore, the major components, L-(-)-Menthol and menthone demonstrated high gastrointestinal absorption and high affinity with the target protein, suggesting possible links that contribute to the analgesic effect of MaEO.

ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major public health challenge worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in the development, progression, and resistance to the treatment of GC, as shown by recent developments in molecular characterization. Still, an in-depth investigation of the lncRNA landscape in GC is absent. However, The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate our present understanding of the role that lncRNA dysregulation plays in the etiology of GC and treatment resistance, with a focus on the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications. Research that described the functions of lncRNA in angiogenesis, stemness, epigenetics, metastasis, apoptosis, development, and resistance to key treatments was given priority. In GC, it has been discovered that a large number of lncRNAs, including MALAT1, HOTAIR, H19, and ANRIL, are aberrantly expressed and are connected with disease-related outcomes. Through various methods such as chromatin remodeling, signal transduction pathways, and microRNA sponging, they modulate hallmark cancer capabilities. Through the activation of stemness programs, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and survival signaling, LncRNAs also control resistance to immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies. By clarifying their molecular roles further, we may be able to identify new treatment targets and ways to overcome resistance. This article aims to explore the interplay between lncRNAs, and GC. Specifically, the focus is on understanding how lncRNAs contribute to the etiology of GC and influence treatment resistance in patients with this disease.

ABSTRACT

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is recognized as one of the most prevalent malignancies, both in terms of incidence and mortality rates. Current research into CRC has shed light on the molecular mechanisms driving its development. Several factors, including lifestyle, environmental influences, genetics, and diet, play significant roles in its pathogenesis. Natural compounds such as curcumin, tanshinone, lycorine, sinomenine, kaempferol, verbascoside, quercetin, berberine, and fisetin have shown great promise in the prevention and treatment of CRC. Research has also highlighted the significance of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in CRC. Among these, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been found to regulate the transcription of genes involved in cancer. LncRNAs contribute to cancer stem cell (CSC) proliferation, angiogenesis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and chemoresistance. Specific lncRNAs, including GAS5, LNC00337, HOTAIR, TPT1-AS1, cCSC1, BCAR4, TUG1, and Solh2, play crucial roles in these processes. They hold potential as novel biomarkers, detectable in bodily fluids and tissues, and could serve as therapeutic targets due to their involvement in drug resistance and sensitivity. These insights could improve CRC treatment strategies, addressing resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current knowledge regarding the effectiveness of natural anti-cancer agents in CRC treatment. Additionally, it offers an in-depth evaluation of lncRNAs in CRC, their role in the disease's progression, and their potential applications in its management.

ABSTRACT

Recently, Saudi growers have expanded their production of organic, soilless-grown strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), but their production shows many difficulties associated with disease susceptibility. In October 2021, 45% of strawberry plants cv. "Festival" organically cultivated in Dammam city, Saudi Arabia (26°31'34.5"N 50°00'51.0"E) showed wilting symptoms. Typical symptoms were yellowing, rapid wilting, death of older leaves, stunting, and decreased roots. Vascular bundle necrosis and crown and root rot were also observed; plants eventually collapsed and died. Twenty symptomatic strawberry plants were sampled to isolate the pathogen. Pieces (4 × 4 mm) of the symptomatic tissues from crowns and roots were sanitized with 1% NaOCl (90 s), submerged in 70% alcohol (20 s), rinsed with sterile water (2x 30 s), placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA; Scharlau Chemie, Spain) and incubated at 25°C for 6 days. Next, we prepared single-spore cultures on PDA and synthetic nutrient-poor agar (SNA). On PDA media, pure cultures produced abundant aerial mycelium, with light pink or purple pigmentation in the medium after incubation at 25°C for 7 days. On SNA media, aerial microconidia were abundant cylindrical to ellipsoid hyaline with zero to one septate (3.8 - 5.9 × 1.3 - 2.5 µm, n = 50). Macroconidia were few, hyaline and falcate, with slightly curved apexes and 2 to 4 septate (18.9 - 27.5 × 3.3 - 4.6 µm, n = 50). Chlamydospores were roundish and terminal or intercalary. As Leslie and Summerell (2006) described, such morphological characteristics are typical of F. oxysporum. The isolates' identities were established by extracting DNA using the DNeasy Plant Mini kit (QIAGEN, Hilden, Germany). This was followed by amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) (White et al., 1990), elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) (O'Donnell et al., 1998), and the ribosomal RNA intergenic spacer (IGS) (Canizares et al., 2015). The ITS, TEF1-α, and IGS sequences of an isolate Fof-10 were submitted to GenBank (PP564462, PP703242, and PP784894, respectively). BLAST analysis confirmed 99.71 and 100% identities to the ITS, TEF-1α, and IGS sequences of F. oxysporum (KU931552.1, OR640020.1, and FJ985519.1), respectively. All isolates tested were confirmed at the forma specialis fragariae, level using the specific primers FofraF/FofraR (Suga et al. 2013). The ∼239 bp amplicon was sequenced and submitted to GenBank (PP703243). Two-month-old healthy strawberry plants of cultivars "Festival," "Marquis," and "Monterey" were inoculated by dipping the roots in the spore suspension (107 conidia ml-1) for 15 min (Henry et al. 2017). There were five replicates for each cultivar. Plants dipped in water were used as a control treatment. The plants were transplanted in sterilized soil and placed in a greenhouse at 30/26°C (day/night). Within 4 to 6 weeks, inoculated plants showed severe wilting and discoloration of the internal crown tissue, while control plants were symptomless. The pathogen was re-isolated from the discolored vascular tissue onto PDA and identified morphologically and molecularly as the original one, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. The test was repeated twice. This report confirms F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae as a causal agent of Fusarium wilt of strawberries in Saudi Arabia. This pathogen was previously reported to cause the Fusarium wilt of strawberries in California (Dilla-Ermita et al., 2023). This disease has been observed in several hydroponic strawberry greenhouses in Saudi Arabia, with incidence ranging from 25% to 45% across multiple locations. Given this, proper strategies are needed to manage this disease and to be compatible with organic farming.

ABSTRACT

Gastric cancers (GCs) are among the most common and fatal malignancies in the world. Despite our increasing understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying GC, further biomarkers are still needed for more in-depth examination, focused prognosis, and treatment. GC is one among the long non-coding RNAs, or lncRNAs, that have emerged as key regulators of the pathophysiology of cancer. This comprehensive review focuses on the diverse functions of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the development of GC and their interactions with important intracellular signaling pathways. LncRNAs affect GC-related carcinogenic signaling cascades including pathways for EGFR, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, p53, Wnt/ß-catenin, JAK/STAT, Hedgehog, NF-κB, and hypoxia-inducible factor. Dysregulated long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression has been associated with multiple characteristics of cancer, such as extended growth, apoptosis resistance, enhanced invasion and metastasis, angiogenesis, and therapy resistance. For instance, lncRNAs such as HOTAIR, MALAT1, and H19 promote the development of GC via altering these pathways. Beyond their main roles, GC lncRNAs exhibit potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. The overview discusses CRISPR/Cas9 genome-modifying methods, antisense oligonucleotides, small molecules, and RNA interference as potential therapeutic approaches to regulate the expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). An in-depth discussion of the intricate functions that lncRNAs play in the development of the majority of stomach malignancies is provided in this review. It provides the groundwork for future translational research in lncRNA-based whole processes toward GC by highlighting their carcinogenic effects, regulatory roles in significant signaling cascades, and practical scientific uses as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

ABSTRACT

Accurately predicting the Modulus of Resilience (MR) of subgrade soils, which exhibit non-linear stress-strain behaviors, is crucial for effective soil assessment. Traditional laboratory techniques for determining MR are often costly and time-consuming. This study explores the efficacy of Genetic Programming (GEP), Multi-Expression Programming (MEP), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in forecasting MR using 2813 data records while considering six key parameters. Several Statistical assessments were utilized to evaluate model accuracy. The results indicate that the GEP model consistently outperforms MEP and ANN models, demonstrating the lowest error metrics and highest correlation indices (R2). During training, the GEP model achieved an R2 value of 0.996, surpassing the MEP (R2 = 0.97) and ANN (R2 = 0.95) models. Sensitivity and SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis were also performed to gain insights into input parameter significance. Sensitivity analysis revealed that confining stress (21.6%) and dry density (26.89%) are the most influential parameters in predicting MR. SHAP analysis corroborated these findings, highlighting the critical impact of these parameters on model predictions. This study underscores the reliability of GEP as a robust tool for precise MR prediction in subgrade soil applications, providing valuable insights into model performance and parameter significance across various machine-learning (ML) approaches.

Background: Bariatric surgery in Saudi Arabia has become one of the most performed surgical procedures for weight loss surgery (WLS). The aim of this survey is to highlight the importance of education and training in bariatric anesthesia (BA). Methods: An Internet-based cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine the percentages of general anesthesiologists among respondents who supported the need for formal structured training in BA as the primary outcome. A 41 items questionnaire on different aspects of BA included in this survey. All anesthesiologists in KSA participated in this survey. Results: 42% responded giving anesthesia for bariatric surgery/year between 25 and 50% of cases/year. 22% responded performing 25-50 cases/month, 21% from 10-25 cases, and 14% from 50-100 cases. Compared with how many elective bariatric surgical procedures performed in your center/month revealed significant differences (P < 0.05), 39% responded with no dedicated team in their center, 14% for <10 cases a month, 9% between 25 and 50 cases a month. Compared to the number of cases performed by non-bariatric anesthetists revealed non-significant differences (P > 0.05), upon asking on how many trained/skilled anesthesiologists in bariatric anesthesia in your center, 24% reported none, 4% only one, 21% 2-5 anesthesiologists, 12% 5-10 anesthesiologists, and 19% of the respondents reported more than 10 anesthesiologists specialized in BA. Conclusion: We believe in education and training in bariatric anesthesia. Residents' rotation in BA should be included in their curriculum. A dedicated fellowship program to be developed at a national level as well as courses and workshops.

Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gram-negative bacillus that can cause fulminant septicaemia in immunocompromised patients. A 67-year-old man who was immunosuppressed as a result of cytotoxic chemotherapy presented with a brief history of fever, lethargy, myalgia, and reduced oral intake. He had recently travelled to the beach to consume seafood. His blood pressure was 81/47 mm Hg, necessitating fluid resuscitation followed by inotropic support and admission to the intensive care unit. His blood culture was positive for curved gram-negative bacilli. The isolate was oxidase-positive and produced an acid butt with an alkaline slant in triple sugar iron agar. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry conclusively identified the isolate as V. vulnificus. Intravenous ceftazidime plus ciprofloxacin were administered, and by the fifth day of admission, he was successfully transferred out to the general ward. In total, the patient completed a 14-day course of antibiotic therapy.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterial pathogen known to cause various kinds of infections due to its repertoire of virulence factors. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of 19 types of virulence genes among clinical isolates of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) using the polymerase chain reaction. A total of 109 MSSA isolates, i.e., 63 hospital-associated (HA) and 46 community-associated (CA) were collected from Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, the main tertiary hospital in Terengganu, Malaysia, from July 2016 to June 2017. The most frequent virulence genes detected were hla (78.9%, n=86) and hld (78.0%, n=85) encoding hemolysins, lukED (56.9%, n=62) encoding leukotoxin ED, followed by seb (26.6%, n=29) and sea (24.8%, n=27) encoding enterotoxins. Among 34 (31.2%) isolates carrying six or more virulence genes, only five were multidrug resistant (MDR) while the remaining isolates were susceptible. Significant associations were discovered between the hld gene with CA-MSSA (p=0.016) and the seo gene with HA-MSSA (p=0.023). However, there is no significant association between virulence genes among the different types of infection. The clinical MSSA isolates in Terengganu showed high prevalence and high diversity of virulence gene carriage.

ABSTRACT

Drug addiction is considered a worldwide concern and one of the most prevailing causes of death globally. Opioids are highly addictive drugs, and one of the most common opioids that is frequently used clinically is fentanyl. The potential harmful effects of chronic exposure to opioids on the heart are still to be elucidated. Although ß-lactam antibiotics are well recognized for their ability to fight bacteria, its protective effect in the brain and liver has been reported. In this study, we hypothesize that ß-lactam antibiotic, ceftriaxone, and the novel synthetic non-antibiotic ß-lactam, MC-100093, are cardioprotective against fentanyl induced-cardiac injury by upregulating xCT expression. Mice were exposed to repeated low dose (0.05 mg/kg, i.p.) of fentanyl for one week and then challenged on day 9 with higher dose of fentanyl (1 mg/kg, i.p.). This study investigated cardiac histopathology and target genes and proteins in serum and cardiac tissues in mice exposed to fentanyl overdose and ß-lactams. We revealed that fentanyl treatment induced cardiac damage as evidenced by elevated cardiac enzymes (troponin I). Furthermore, fentanyl treatment caused large aggregations of inflammatory cells and elevation in the areas and volumes of myocardial fibers, indicating hypertrophy and severe cardiac damage. Ceftriaxone and MC-100093 treatment, However, induced cardioprotective effects as evidenced by marked reduction in cardiac enzymes (troponin I) and changes in histopathology. Furthermore, ceftriaxone and MC-100093 treatment decreased the levels of hypertrophic genes (α-MHC & ß-MHC), apoptotic (caspase-3), and inflammatory markers (IL-6 & NF-κB). This study reports for the first time the cardioprotective effect of ß-lactams against fentanyl-induced cardiac injury. Further studies are greatly encouraged to completely identify the cardioprotective properties of ceftriaxone and MC-100093.

Opioid-related deaths are attributed to overdoses, and fentanyl overdose has been on the rise in many parts of the world, including the USA. Glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1) has been identified as a therapeutic target in several preclinical models of substance use disorders, and ß-lactams effectively enhance its expression and function. In the current study, we characterized the metabolomic profile of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in fentanyl-overdose mouse models, and we evaluated the protective effects of the functional enhancement of GLT-1 using ß-lactams, ceftriaxone, and MC-100093. BALB/c mice were divided into four groups: control, fentanyl, fentanyl/ceftriaxone, and fentanyl/MC-100093. While the control group was intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with normal saline simultaneously with other groups, all fentanyl groups were i.p. injected with 1 mg/kg of fentanyl as an overdose after habituation with four repetitive non-consecutive moderate doses (0.05 mg/kg) of fentanyl for a period of seven days. MC-100093 (50 mg/kg) and ceftriaxone (200 mg/kg) were i.p. injected from days 5 to 9. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for metabolomics, and Western blotting was performed to determine the expression of target proteins. Y-maze spontaneous alternation performance and the open field activity monitoring system were used to measure behavioral manifestations. Fentanyl overdose altered the abundance of about 30 metabolites, reduced the expression of GLT-1, and induced the expression of inflammatory mediators IL-6 and TLR-4 in the NAc. MC-100093 and ceftriaxone attenuated the effects of fentanyl-induced downregulation of GLT-1 and upregulation of IL-6; however, only ceftriaxone attenuated fentanyl-induced upregulation of TRL4 expression. Both of the ß-lactams attenuated the effects of fentanyl overdose on locomotor activities but did not induce significant changes in the overall metabolomic profile. Our findings revealed that the exposure to a high dose of fentanyl causes alterations in key metabolic pathways in the NAc. Pretreatment with ceftriaxone and MC-100093 normalized fentanyl-induced downregulation of GLT-1 expression with subsequent attenuation of neuroinflammation as well as the hyperactivity, indicating that ß-lactams may be promising drugs for treating fentanyl use disorder.

PURPOSE: Inguinal hernias lead to several potentially fatal complications such as strangulation. Assessing the prevalence, risk factors, and beliefs of a population is essential to develop appropriate preventive strategies. This study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and awareness of inguinal hernia in the adult population of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 461 adults aged between 18 and 60 years after excluding those aged <18 and >60 years. This study was conducted in five regions of Saudi Arabia (north, west, central, south, and east). A pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data on the prevalence, perception, and awareness of the participants. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for inguinal hernia. RESULTS: The study revealed that most participants were men n=262 (56.8%), aged between 18 and 25 years n=241 (52.3%), were single n=278 (60.3%), had a bachelor's degree n=225 (48.8%) and earned less than 50,000 Saudi Riyals annually n=285 (61.8%). Most participants resided in urban areas n=366 (79.4%) with their parents n=230 (49.9%). The prevalence of inguinal hernias in adults was low (5.2%). Our results indicated a significant association between family history of inguinal hernia, chronic cough, bronchial asthma, smoking, and inguinal hernia (p < 0.001). Young adults and undergraduates displayed significantly low awareness of inguinal hernias (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Family history of inguinal hernia, chronic cough, bronchial asthma, and smoking were factors associated with inguinal hernia. Low awareness levels were observed among young undergraduates, with a moderate overall level of awareness.

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychopathologic disorder caused by several factors. The early signs include poor interaction and communication, delayed milestones, and repeated behavior patterns. This study aimed to assess the relationship between screen time and ASD severity and investigate the types of electronic devices associated with ASD in children aged four to six years in Arar City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted in primary healthcare centers (PHCs) in Arar City, KSA. The study enrolled all parents with children aged four to six years attending the PHCs in Arar City, KSA. Results The total sample size was 199 participants. Regarding the relationship between screen time exposure and ASD, there were variable screen time exposure durations, with 22.6% of children exposed for less than an hour, 30.7% for one to two hours, and 46.7% for more than two hours. Moreover, the type of electronic devices to which children were exposed varied, with smartphones being the most prevalent (68.3%). In terms of the age of children since exposure to electronic devices, the data indicated that 30.2% were exposed before the age of two, 35.2% between two and three years, and 34.7% after three years of age. Regarding the relationship with sociodemographic characteristics, there was a statistically significant relationship with the mother's age at birth (p = 0.050), mother's education level (p = 0.009), father's education level (p = 0.049), whether the child was suffering from any chronic or neurological disease (p = 0.008), age since the child was exposed to electronic devices (p = 0.049), and screen time exposure duration (p = 0.040). Conclusions The study highlights the significant association between screen time exposure and the development of ASD in children. Public awareness of this associated risk among caregivers is recommended to follow the protective guidelines. Further research and interventions are needed to better understand and address the impact of screen media use on children's neurodevelopment and overall well-being.

Hybrid genotypes can provide significant yield gains over conventional inbred varieties due to heterosis or hybrid vigor. However, hybrids can also display unintended negative attributes or phenotypes such as extreme pathogen susceptibility. The necrotrophic pathogen Pyrenophora teres f. maculata (Ptm) causes spot form net blotch, which has caused significant yield losses to barley worldwide. Here, we report on a non-transgressive hybrid susceptibility locus in barley identified between the three parental lines CI5791, Tifang and Golden Promise that are resistant to Ptm isolate 13IM.3. However, F2 progeny from CI5791 × Tifang and CI5791 × Golden Promise crosses exhibited extreme susceptibility. The susceptible phenotype segregated in a ratio of 1 resistant:1 susceptible representing a genetic segregation ratio of 1 parental (res):2 heterozygous (sus):1 parental (res) suggesting a single hybrid susceptibility locus. Genetic mapping using a total of 715 CI5791 × Tifang F2 individuals (1430 recombinant gametes) and 149 targeted SNPs delimited the hybrid susceptibility locus designated Susceptibility to Pyrenophora teres 2 (Spt2) to an ~ 198 kb region on chromosome 5H of the Morex V3 reference assembly. This single locus was independently mapped with 83 CI5791 × Golden Promise F2 individuals (166 recombinant gametes) and 180 genome wide SNPs that colocalized to the same Spt2 locus. The CI5791 genome was sequenced using PacBio Continuous Long Read technology and comparative analysis between CI5791 and the publicly available Golden Promise genome assembly determined that the delimited region contained a single high confidence Spt2 candidate gene predicted to encode a pentatricopeptide repeat-containing protein.
