ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the trends of pediatric dental rehabilitation in hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs) and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) from 2019 to 2021 across states and demographic groups. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized the 2019 to 2021 Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System Analytical Files to examine trends in dental rehabilitation for children ages 12 years and younger enrolled in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program. The final analytic sample included 20,508,093 beneficiaries from 2019, 19,436,957 beneficiaries from 2020, and 20,416,440 beneficiaries from 2021. Chi-square tests were used to compare dental rehabilitation usage across groups (age, sex, race/ethnicity, and place of service). Results: Rehabilitation of Medicaid beneficiaries performed in HOPDs showed a decrease year over year (51 to 34 to 30; P<0.001), while the usage in ASCs increased (1,307 to 1,310 to 1,367; P<0.001). For all three years, the highest usage was seen in Non-Hispanic (NH) American Indian/Alaskan Native children (154, 66, 74; P<0.001), while the lowest usage was seen in NH Black children (21, 16, 17; P<0.001). Rehabilitation for Hispanic children had the greatest relative recovery over the three years (39 to 34 to 38; P<0.001). Conclusions: Dental rehabilitation usage in ambulatory surgery centers showed continued growth through the public health emergency. There was significant variation in rates across states and demographics.

ABSTRACT

Harmful elements in Egyptian phosphoric acid were identified by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. In the Second Egyptian Nuclear Research Reactor, precipitates were created and examined to identify many types of contaminants (Ce, Co, Cr, etc.). New bionanocomposite materials effectively removed with a high proportion each of Ce, Th, Pa, U, Np, Zn, and Co (100%) and a somewhat lower percentage (65-85%) for Cr, Sc, and Fe from simulated solutions, suggesting promise for purifying phosphoric acid.

ABSTRACT

Dyes are one of the common contaminants in industrial wastewater. Adsorption is the most widely method which used to treat dye-contaminated water due to their easy use, cost-effectiveness, and their efficiency was high. The aim of this study is the investigating of the utilization of the activated carbon which prepared from Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) as a low cost adsorbent for removing of cationic Methylene Blue dye (MB)from wastewater. measuring the surface area using BET methods and SEM. The FT‒IR and XRD was measured. Different variables (e.g.: initial concentration of the dye, pH, contact time, and dosage) have been studied. Process has been systematically investigated experimentally at (25 ± 1 °C). The % removal of MB reached 99.4% after 90-min MB adsorption (40 mg/L) was observed within 5 min of contact time for the Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) dosage of 4 g/L. MB initial concentration (10 ppm) Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) effectively adsorbed MB (> 99%) over a widely range of pH (from pH 2 to pH 8). However, a swift decline in removal was observed when the pH was set at 7. The results of the adsorption kinetics analysis indicate a strong correlation with the pseudo-second-order model, as evidenced by the high regression coefficients. However, the adsorption capacity diminished with a rise in temperature. Thermodynamic calculations of (MB) onto Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) is an exothermic reaction. The results have been indicated that the effectiveness of MB removal by activated carbon prepared from Raphanus seeds solid residual is favorable under neutral conditions, Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) can be considered an efficient, environmentally friendly, readily available, and economical adsorbent that could treat industrial wastewater contaminated with cationic textile dyes. The objective of the experiments was to investigate the impact of various factors on the response of a process or formulation. To accomplish this goal, response surface methodology (RSM) has employed as a statistical model. RSM is an efficient and effective method for optimizing processes through the use of a quadratic polynomial model. The utilization of RSM allows for a reduction in the number of experiments needed, thus minimizing the associated costs of extensive analysis. This method has been done using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to optimize % removal of MB. The optimal conditions as obtained from the RSM is pH 7,contact time 120 min, initial concentration 10 ppm, ACRS dosage 1 g, adsorption temperature 45 °C.

BACKGROUND: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) and growth hormone (GH) genes have been identified as major regulators of milk yield and composition, and reproductive performance in cattle. Genetic variations/polymorphism in these genes have been found to influence milk production, yield and quality. This investigation aimed to explore the association between IGF-I and GH polymorphisms and milk yield and composition, and reproductive performance in a herd consisting of 1000 Holstein-Friesian (HF) dairy cattle from El-Alamia farm. The experimental animals were 76 ± 7.25 months in age, with an average live weight of 750 ± 50.49 kg, and raised under the same conditions of feeding and weather. The studied animals were divided into three categories; high producers (n = 280), medium producers (n = 318) and low producers (n = 402). RESULTS: The digestion of 249 bp for IGF-I-SnaBI using the Restriction-fragment-length-polymorphism (RFLP) technique yielded two alleles; T (0.59) and C (0.41) and three genotypes; TT (0.52), TC (0.39) and CC (0.09) and this agrees with the results of DNA/gene sequencing technique. The sequencing analysis of the IGF-I gene revealed polymorphism in position 472 (C > T). Nucleotide sequencing of the amplified fragment of the IGF-I gene of different genotypes was done and submitted to the NCBI GenBank with Accession no. MH156812.1 and MH156811.1. While the digestion of 432 bp for GH-AluI using the RFLP technique yielded two alleles; A (0.81) and G (0.19) and two genotypes; AA (0.77) and AG (0.23) and this agrees with the results of DNA/gene sequencing technique. The sequencing analysis of the GH gene revealed polymorphism in the position 1758 C > G and in turn led to changes in amino acid sequence as Alanine for (A) compared to Glycine for (G). Nucleotide sequencing of the amplified fragment of the GH gene was done and submitted to the NCBI GenBank with Accession no. MH156810.1. The results of this study demonstrate the effects of variants of the GH-IGF-I somatotrophic axis on milk production and composition traits in commercial HF cattle. The greatest values of milk yield and reproductive performance were observed on IGF-I-SnaBI-TC and GH-AluI-AG genotypes. While the greatest % fat and % protein values were observed on IGF-I-SnaBI-CC and GH-AluI-AA genotyped individuals. CONCLUSION: The genetic variation of the studied genes can be utilized in selecting animals with superior milk yield, composition and reproductive performance in Holstein-Friesian Dairy Cattle under subtropical conditions.

ABSTRACT

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their exceptional properties have the potential to revolutionize the field of electrochemistry and pave the way for new and exciting applications. MOFs is an excellent choice as an active electrocatalyst component in the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. Here, bimetallic NiCo-MOFs, monometallic Ni-MOFs, and Co-MOFs were fabricated to modify the carbon paste electrode. Moreover, the ratio between Co and Ni within the bimetallic MOFs was optimized. Our aim in this work is to synthesize different compositions from bimetallic MOFs and systematically compare their catalytic activity with mono-metallic MOFs on paracetamol. The structure and properties of the 2D NiCo-MOFs were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and electrochemical method. Bimetallic Ni0.75Co0.25-MOFs modified carbon paste sensor displayed the optimum sensing performance for the electrochemical detection of paracetamol. A linear response over the range 6.00 × 10- 7 to 1.00 × 10- 4 M with a detection limit of 2.10 × 10- 8 M was obtained. The proposed method was applied to detect paracetamol in spiked human plasma and to determine paracetamol in the presence of its major toxic impurity, p-aminophenol. These findings suggest the considerable potential use of the newly developed sensor as a point-of-care tool for detecting paracetamol and p-aminophenol in the future.

The importance of biomedical physical data is underscored by its crucial role in advancing our comprehension of human health, unraveling the mechanisms underlying diseases, and facilitating the development of innovative medical treatments and interventions. This data serves as a fundamental resource, empowering researchers, healthcare professionals, and scientists to make informed decisions, pioneer research, and ultimately enhance global healthcare quality and individual well-being. It forms a cornerstone in the ongoing pursuit of medical progress and improved healthcare outcomes. This article aims to tackle challenges in estimating unknown parameters and reliability measures related to the modified Weibull distribution when applied to censored progressive biomedical data from the initial failure occurrence. In this context, the article proposes both classical and Bayesian techniques to derive estimates for unknown parameters, survival, and failure rate functions. Bayesian estimates are computed considering both asymmetric and symmetric loss functions. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method is employed to obtain these Bayesian estimates and their corresponding highest posterior density credible intervals. Due to the inherent complexity of these estimators, which cannot be theoretically compared, a simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of various estimation procedures. Additionally, a range of optimization criteria is utilized to identify the most effective progressive control strategies. Lastly, the article presents a medical application to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators. Numerical findings indicate that Bayesian estimates outperform other estimation methods by achieving minimal root mean square errors and narrower interval lengths.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a new green method was developed for the synthesis of bis(indolyl)methane derivatives using electrochemical bisarylation reaction in deep eutectic solvents as a green alternative to traditional solvents and electrolytes. The effects of varying time, current, type of solvent and material of electrodes were all studied. The optimum reaction conditions involved the use of ethylene glycol/choline chloride with a ratio of 2:1 at 80 °C for 45 min. Graphite and platinum were used as cathode and anode, respectively. The newly developed method offered many advantages such as using mild reaction conditions, short reaction time and affording high product yields with a wide range of substituted aromatic aldehydes bearing electron donating or electron withdrawing substituents. In addition, the electrochemical method proved to be more effective than heating in deep eutectic solvents and afforded higher yields of products in shorter reaction time. The mechanism of the electrochemical reaction was proposed and confirmed using the cyclic voltammetry study.

ABSTRACT

Diaphragmatic palsy after lung transplantation has been reported infrequently. Given the role of the diaphragm in respiration, the palsy may play a significant role in the post-surgical recovery as well as morbidity and mortality. This review summarises the current literature to better understand diaphragmatic palsy in the post lung-transplant setting among adults. A thorough literature search was conducted through multiple databases and 91 publications were identified that fit the research question. The review aimed to report the burden of this problem, explore different modalities of diagnosis reported, the effect of various clinical factors and treatment modalities, as well as their effects on outcomes. Additionally, it aimed to highlight the variability, limitations of reported data, and the absence of a standardised approach. This review emphasises the crucial need for more dedicated research to better address this clinical challenge.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Novel thiazole hybrids were synthesized via thiazolation of 4-phenylthiosemicarbazone (4). Materials & methods: The anticancer activity against the NCI 60 cancer cell line panel. Results: Methyl 2-(2-((1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazineylidene)-4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-5-ylidene)acetate (6a) showed significant anticancer activity at 10 µM with a mean growth inhibition (GI) of 51.18%. It showed the highest cytotoxic activity against the ovarian cancer OVCAR-4 with an IC50 of 1.569 ± 0.06 µM. Compound 6a inhibited PI3Kα with IC50 = 0.225 ± 0.01 µM. Moreover, compound 6a revealed a decrease of Akt and mTOR phosphorylation in OVCAR-4 cells. In addition, antibacterial activity showed that compounds 11 and 12 were the most active against Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion: Compound 6a is a promising molecule that could be a lead candidate for further studies.


Novel naphthalene-azine-thiazole hybrids 5-12 were synthesized via late-stage thiazolation of the corresponding 4-phenylthiosemicarbazone 4. Compound 6a showed significant anticancer activity at single-dose screening and yielded excellent inhibitory activity with a mean GI of 51.18%. Compound 6a showed the highest cytotoxic activity against OVCAR-4 with an IC50 of 1.569 ± 0.06 µM. Moreover, compound 6a exhibited an IC50 of 31.89 ± 1.19 µM against normal ovarian cell line (OCE1) and a selectivity index of 19.1. Compound 6a inhibited PI3Kα with IC50 = 0.225 ± 0.01 µM compared with alpelisib (IC50 = 0.061 ± 0.003 µM). Moreover, compound 6a revealed a powerful decrease of Akt and mTOR phosphorylation in the OVCAR-4 cell line. The cell cycle analysis showed that compound 6a caused an arrest at the G2/M phase. The compound also increased the total apoptosis by 26.8-fold and raised the level of caspase-3 by 4.34 times in OVCAR-4. In addition, antibacterial activity was estimated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Compounds 11 and 12 were the most active derivatives, with MIC value of 256 µg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus. Molecular docking was done and showed that 6a interlocked and fitted well into the ATP binding site of PI3Kα kinase (Protein Data Bank ID: 4JPS) with a fitness value (-119.153 kcal/mol) and forms the key H-bonds with Val851 and Ser854 like the marketed PI3Kα inhibitor alpelisib. Consequently, 6a is the most promising molecule that could be a lead candidate for further studies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language Special Education teachers (EFLSE) regarding game-based learning approaches for addressing behavioral disorders in ADHD patients. METHOD: The study involved a sample (n = 131) of EFLSE teachers who completed a questionnaire to determine how feasible, acceptable, and helpful they found game-based learning. RESULTS: The study revealed that EFLSE teachers perceive game-based learning to be a feasible and acceptable method for engaging ADHD students and helping to maintain their attention during game-based learning activities. Nevertheless, implementation and individualized approaches are cited as challenges. Additionally, EFLSE teachers emphasized the benefits of game-based learning, including improved problem-solving, assessment methods, collaboration, and the acquisition of academic skills. CONCLUSIONS: The study contributes insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers that can support the development of evidence-based interventions offering game-based learning for students with ADHD.

ABSTRACT

Herein, we synthesized biogenic carbon dots (CDs) with blue-shifted maximum excitation (λex/λem of 320/404 nm) from largely wasted tangerine seeds for the first time via a one-step hydrothermal method. The biogenic CDs exhibit a maximum excitation wavelength that overlaps with the absorption spectrum of ketorolac tromethamine (KETO) at 320 nm. The developed CDs serve as a turn-off fluorescent probe via an inner filter effect (IFE) quenching mechanism. The resulting CDs have high quantum yield (QY) (39% ± 2.89%, n = 5) and exhibited great performance toward KETO over a concentration range of 0.50-16.00 µg/mL with a limit of detection (LOD) = 0.17 µg/mL. The nanoprobe achieved a high % recovery in assaying KETO in tablet dosage form and had not been significantly affected by various interferents including co-formulated and co-administered drugs. The nanoprobe shows selectivity toward KETO, even in the presence of its photocatalytic degradation products. It can effectively investigate the elimination of KETO from aquatic systems and test its stability in pharmaceutical preparations. The developed nanoprobe underwent a comprehensive evaluation of its environmental impact using analytical eco-scale (AES), complex green analytical procedure index (Complex GAPI), and the Analytical GREEnness calculator (AGREE). The sustainability of the developed nano sensor was assessed and compared to the reported metal-based quantum dots probe for KETO using the innovative RGB 12 model, considering 12 white analytical chemistry (WAC) perspectives.

ABSTRACT

Infections by Staphylococcus aureus have been treated historically with ß-lactam antibiotics. However, these antibiotics have become obsolete in methicillin-resistant S. aureus by acquisition of the bla and mec operons. The presence of the ß-lactam antibiotic is detected by the sensor domains of BlaR and/or MecR, and the information is transmitted to the cytoplasm, resulting in derepression of the antibiotic-resistance genes. We hypothesized that inhibition of the sensor domain would shut down this response system, and ß-lactam susceptibility would be restored. An in silico search of 11 million compounds led to a benzimidazole-based hit and, ultimately, to the boronate 4. The X-ray structure of 4 is covalently engaged with the active-site serine of BlaR. Compound 4 potentiates by 16- to 4,096-fold the activities of oxacillin and of meropenem against methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains. The combination of 4 with oxacillin or meropenem shows efficacy in infected mice, validating the strategy.

Five new pyridazine scaffolds were synthesized and assessed for their inhibitory potential against both cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) compared with indomethacin and celecoxib. The majority of the synthesized compounds demonstrated a definite preference for COX-2 over COX-1 inhibition. Compounds 4c and 6b exhibited enhanced potency towards COX-2 enzyme with IC50 values of 0.26 and 0.18 µM, respectively, compared to celecoxib with IC50 = 0.35 µM. The selectivity index (SI) of compound 6b was 6.33, more than that of indomethacin (SI = 0.50), indicating the most predominant COX-2 inhibitory activity. Consequently, the in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of compound 6b was comparable to that of indomethacin and celecoxib and no ulcerative effect was detected upon the oral administration of compound 6b, as indicated by the histopathological examination. Moreover, compound 6b decreased serum plasma PEG2 and IL-1ß. To rationalize the selectivity and potency of COX-2 inhibition, a molecular docking study of compound 6b into the COX-2 active site was carried out. The COX-2 inhibition and selectivity of compound 6b can be attributed to its ability to enter the side pocket of the COX-2 enzyme and interact with the essential amino acid His90. Together, these findings suggested that compound 6b is a promising lead for the possible design of COX-2 inhibitors that could be employed as safe and effective anti-inflammatory drugs.

Among 36 species of the genus Livistona (family Palmae or Arecaceae), L. carinensis is considered the only species native to Africa. Previous studies showed the richness of Livistona fruits in phenolic compounds. The goal of the current study was to investigate the phytochemical composition and assess the antiviral mechanisms of the L. carinensis leaves' ethanolic extract cultivated in Egypt for the first time. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS) was applied. Moreover, the total crude extract was fractionated using ethyl acetate and n-butanol for phytochemical investigations by various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Besides, the antiviral activity of L. carinensis leaves was assessed using three protocols in vitro using MTT assay compared to acyclovir. UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS-based analysis resulted in identification of 72 metabolites tentatively. They belonged to diverse phytochemical classes, mainly including flavonoids (29), organic acids (10), and phenolic acids (7). The antiviral activity investigations revealed a direct Adeno virus inactivation mechanism rather than inhibition of virus replication or blocking its attachment to Vero cells. Hence, the plant leaves may be a potential candidate for discovery of novel antiviral drugs owing to the diversity of identified phytochemical classes.

One of the biggest issues affecting the entire world currently is water contamination caused by textile industries' incapacity to properly dispose their wastewater. The presence of toxic textile dyes in the aquatic environment has attracted significant research interest due to their high environmental stability and their negative effects on human health and ecosystems. Therefore, it is crucial to convert the hazardous dyes such as methyl orange (MO) azo dye into environmentally safe products. In this context, we describe the use of Copper Nitroprusside Chitosan (Cu/SNP/Cts) nanocomposite as a nanocatalyst for the chemical reduction of azodyes by sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The Cu/SNP/Cts was readily obtained by chemical coprecipitation in a stoichiometric manner. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were applied to investigate chemical, phase, composition, and molecular interactions. Additionally, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the nanomaterial's microstructure. UV-vis spectroscopy was utilized for studying the Cu Nitroprusside Chitosan's catalytic activity for the reduction of azodye. The Cu/SNP/Cts nanocomposite demonstrated outstanding performance with total reduction time 160 s and pseudo-first order constant of 0.0188 s-1. Additionally, the stability and reusability study demonstrated exceptional reusability up to 5 cycles with minimal activity loss. The developed Cu/SNP/Cts nanocomposite act as efficient nanocatalysts for the reduction of harmful Methyl orange azodye.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To eradicate atherosclerotic diseases, novel biomarkers, and future therapy targets must reveal the burden of early atherosclerosis (AS), which occurs before life-threatening unstable plaques form. The chemical and biological features of microRNAs (miRNAs) make them interesting biomarkers for numerous diseases. We summarized the latest research on miRNA regulatory mechanisms in AS progression studies, which may help us use miRNAs as biomarkers and treatments for difficult-to-treat diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research has demonstrated that miRNAs have a regulatory function in the observed changes in gene and protein expression during atherogenesis, the process that leads to atherosclerosis. Several miRNAs play a role in the development of atherosclerosis, and these miRNAs could potentially serve as non-invasive biomarkers for atherosclerosis in various regions of the body. These miRNAs have the potential to serve as biomarkers and targets for early treatment of atherosclerosis. The start and development of AS require different miRNAs. It reviews new research on miRNAs affecting endothelium, vascular smooth muscle, vascular inflammation, lipid retention, and cholesterol metabolism in AS. A miRNA gene expression profile circulates with AS everywhere. AS therapies include lipid metabolism, inflammation reduction, and oxidative stress inhibition. Clinical use of miRNAs requires tremendous progress. We think tiny miRNAs can enable personalized treatment.

Breast cancer (BC) continues to be the malignancy with the highest diagnosis rate worldwide. Between 15 % and 30 % of BC patients show overexpressed human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), which is linked to poor clinical results in terms of invasiveness and recurrence risk. Passive immunity-based therapeutic approaches for treating HER2-enriched BC, are not effective and significant problems need to be tackled. Constructing multi-epitope vaccines is favored over single-epitope vaccines due to its ability to induce immunity against a variety of antigenic targets which will improve the efficacy of the vaccine. The current study describes a multi-epitope vaccine from HER2 protein against HER2-positive BC using several immunoinformatic techniques to achieve a potent and durable immune response. Nine Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and five Helper T lymphocytes (HTL) epitopes were predicted and validated from HER2 protein using in silico tools. The expressed protein of the designed vaccine is predicted to be highly thermostable with better solubility. The predicted vaccine 3D structure was validated by ProSA servers and by the ERRAT server. Molecular docking analysis revealed a high binding affinity and stability of the designed vaccine with MHCI and TLR-2, 4, 7, and 9 receptors. The analysis of the C-ImmSim server revealed that the novel vaccine construct had the ability to elicit robust anti-cancerous innate, humoral, and cell-mediated immune responses. The vaccine can be a suitable option for HER2-positive BC patients and other patients with HER2-positive cancers to evoke immune responses. However, in vitro and in vivo experiments are needed to assess its effectiveness and safety.

Background: Digital mucous cysts (DMCs) are masses on the fingers that can be definitively managed with surgical excision. Though uncommon, surgical site infections can develop into septic arthritis. We sought to determine whether postoperative splinting decreases rates of postoperative infection and the need for postoperative antibiotics. We also explored the effect of age, gender, obesity, and preoperative antibiotic administration on infectious complications. Methods: Patients who underwent DMC excision between 2011 and 2021 were retrospectively identified. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the complication rates including documented infection, postoperative antibiotic administration, mass recurrence, and return to operating room. Associations were analyzed between both preoperative antibiotic administration and postoperative splinting with respect to postsurgical complications. Results: The database search identified 373 patients who underwent 394 DMC excisions. Postoperative antibiotics were given in splinted patients at lower rates than their nonsplinted counterparts with a small-to-moderate effect size, but the difference was not statistically significant (2.7 vs. 7.5%). Preoperative antibiotic administration was not found to significantly affect the prescription of postoperative antibiotics. Splinting did not reduce rates of DMC recurrence. Patients who were splinted were more likely to have also received preoperative antibiotics. Males were given postoperative antibiotics more frequently than females (12.6 vs. 4.0%). Conclusions: Though not statistically significant, splinted patients were prescribed postoperative antibiotics less frequently. Postoperative antibiotics were utilized more frequently than the rate of infections typically reported following this procedure, possibly indicating overcautious prescription habits or underreported suspected infections.

Ionizing radiation produces deleterious effects on living organisms. The present investigation has been carried out to study the prophylactic as well as the therapeutic effects of treated rats with quercetin (Quer) and curcumin (Cur), which are two medicinal herbs known for their antioxidant activities against damages induced by whole-body fractionated gamma irradiation. Exposure of rats to whole-body gamma irradiation induced a significant decrease in erythrocyte (RBC), leukocyte (WBCs), platelet count (Plt), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), hematocrit (Hct %), mean erythrocyte hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and mean erythrocyte volume (MCV); a high increase in plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS); a nonsignificant statistical decrease in the mean value of serum glutathione (GSH); a significant increase in plasma alanine transferase (ALT), aspartate transferase (AST), alkaline phosphates (ALP), serum total protein, serum total cholesterol levels, total triglycerides levels, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels; and with marked histological changes and structural changes measured by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Applying both quercetin and curcumin pre- and postexposure to gamma radiation revealed a remarkable improvement in all the studied parameters. The cellular damage by gamma radiation is greatly mitigated by the coadministration of curcumin and quercetin before radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare low-grade glial tumor primarily affecting young individuals. Surgery is the primary treatment option; however, managing residual/recurrent tumors remains uncertain. This international multi-institutional study retrospectively assessed the use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for PXA. METHODS: A total of 36 PXA patients (53 tumors) treated at 11 institutions between 1996 and 2023 were analyzed. Data included demographics, clinical variables, SRS parameters, tumor control, and clinical outcomes. Kaplan-Meier estimates summarized the local control (LC), progression-free survival, and overall survival (OS). Secondary end points addressed adverse radiation effects and the risk of malignant transformation. Cox regression analysis was used. RESULTS: A total of 38 tumors were grade 2, and 15 tumors were grade 3. Nine patients underwent initial gross total resection, and 10 received adjuvant therapy. The main reason for SRS was residual tumors (41.5%). The median follow-up was 34 months (range, 2-324 months). LC was achieved in 77.4% of tumors, with 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year LC estimates at 86.7%, 82.3%, and 77.8%, respectively. Younger age at SRS (hazard ratios [HR] 3.164), absence of peritumoral edema (HR 4.685), and higher marginal dose (HR 6.190) were significantly associated with better LC. OS estimates at 1, 2, and 5 years were 86%, 74%, and 49.3%, respectively, with a median OS of 44 months. Four patients died due to disease progression. Radiological adverse radiation effects included edema (n = 8) and hemorrhagic change (n = 1). One grade 3 PXA transformed into glioblastoma 13 months after SRS. CONCLUSION: SRS offers promising outcomes for PXA management, providing effective LC, reasonable progression-free survival, and minimal adverse events.
