ABSTRACT

The CAST-CAPP axion haloscope, operating at CERN inside the CAST dipole magnet, has searched for axions in the 19.74 µeV to 22.47 µeV mass range. The detection concept follows the Sikivie haloscope principle, where Dark Matter axions convert into photons within a resonator immersed in a magnetic field. The CAST-CAPP resonator is an array of four individual rectangular cavities inserted in a strong dipole magnet, phase-matched to maximize the detection sensitivity. Here we report on the data acquired for 4124 h from 2019 to 2021. Each cavity is equipped with a fast frequency tuning mechanism of 10 MHz/ min between 4.774 GHz and 5.434 GHz. In the present work, we exclude axion-photon couplings for virialized galactic axions down to gaγγ = 8 × 10-14 GeV-1 at the 90% confidence level. The here implemented phase-matching technique also allows for future large-scale upgrades.

ABSTRACT

A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of 10-29 e ⋅ cm by using polarized "magic" momentum 0.7 GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. The measurement is sensitive to new physics beyond the standard model at the scale of 3000 TeV.

ABSTRACT

A new method of optimized efficiency for the retrospective reconstruction of tomograms is presented. The method has been developed for use with isocentric fluoroscopic units and is capable of performing digital tomosynthesis of anatomical planes of user selected orientation and distance from the isocenter. Optimization of efficiency has been achieved by segmenting the reconstruction process into discrete transformations that are specific to groups of pixels, rather than performing pixel by pixel operations. These involve a number of projections of the acquired image matrices as well as parallel translations and summing. Application of this method has resulted in a significant reduction of computing time. The proposed algorithm has been experimentally tested on a radiotherapy simulator unit with the use of a phantom and the obtained results are reported and discussed.

ABSTRACT

Extracellular matrix (ECM) is detected as short, disorganized fibrils in the forming embryonic extracellular spaces shortly prior to the first morphogenetic cellular movements and interactions in the early chick embryo. As development progresses, the ECM is organized into an intricate network spanning the embryonic cavities. This dynamic entity undergoes relatively rapid changes in its organization pattern during the developmental period from morula to the induction of the neural plate. The ECM seems to preserve the exquisite architecture of the embryo and could guide migrating cells into defined pathways in the early embryo.
