ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rice blast and bacterial leaf blight (BLB) are the most limiting factors for rice production in the world which cause yield losses typically ranging from 20 to 30% and can be as high as 50% in some areas of Asia especially India under severe infection conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: An improved line of Tellahamsa, TH-625-491 having two BLB resistance genes (xa13 and Xa21) and two blast resistance genes (Pi54 and Pi1) with 95% Tellahamsa genome was used in the present study. TH-625-491 was validated for all four target genes and was used for backcrossing with Tellahamsa. Seventeen IBC1F1 plants heterozygous for all four target genes, 19 IBC1F2 plants homozygous for four, three and two gene combinations and 19 IBC1F2:3 plants also homozygous for four, three and two gene combinations were observed. Among seventeen IBC1F1 plants, IBC1F1-62 plant recorded highest recurrent parent genome (97.5%) covering 75 polymorphic markers. Out of the total of 920 IBC1F2 plants screened, 19 homozygous plants were homozygous for four, three and two target genes along with bacterial blight resistance. Background analysis was done in all 19 homozygous IBC1F2 plants possessing BLB resistance (possessing xa13, Xa21, Pi54 and Pi1 in different combinations) with five parental polymorphic SSR markers. IBC1F2-62-515 recovered 98.5% recurrent parent genome. The four, three and two gene pyramided lines of Tellahamsa exhibited varying resistance to blast. CONCLUSIONS: Results show that there might be presence of antagonistic effect between bacterial blight and blast resistance genes since the lines with Pi54 and Pi1 combination are showing better resistance than the combinations with both bacterial blight and blast resistance genes.

ABSTRACT

Burn injuries affect patients of all ages, and timely surgical debridement and excision commence to protect dermal vascularity and integrity, improve healing, and minimize scarring. Several tools may be used for burn wound excision, which is performed either tangentially or down to muscular fascia. Once wounds are optimized from a tissue viability and healing standpoint, coverage may be obtained through grafts or secondary intention healing for more superficial injuries. A collaborative team of plastic and general surgeons, anesthesiologists, nutritionists, and therapists can provide improved patient care throughout the perioperative period, leading to improvements in overall patient morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Staffing models within nursing units have long been a hot topic of discussion. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this discussion by straining the national nursing environment and workforce. Before the pandemic, the neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) primarily used an acuity-adjusted staffing model and aimed for a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1.5. During and after the pandemic, the NSICU was forced to primarily use a centralized staffing model because of the increased turnover in the hospital at large and a rise in patient census. METHODS : Unit census data in an NSICU were tracked before, during, and after the pandemic alongside utilization of a centralized staffing model in the hospital at large. RESULTS : During this time, the NSICU saw a statistically significant increase in average nurse-to-patient ratio and incidences of both floating and tripled assignments. The NSICU simultaneously saw a 180% increase in nursing turnover. CONCLUSION : Although we cannot prove that a centralized staffing model is directly responsible for higher nursing turnover, its utilization led to greater incidence of poor staffing-reflected in deviation from the nurse-to-patient ratio goal of the unit. Nurse staffing concerns play a large role in nurse satisfaction in the workforce: staffing shortages have been described both as a precursor to and as a consequence of increased nursing turnover.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: The Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) limits the sale of tobacco products, promotion and advertising and packaging of tobacco products in India. Periodic monitoring of the level of compliance with all sections of COTPA is obligatory to assess the effectiveness of the act. METHODS: This pre-post study aimed to assess the change in the level of compliance with different sections of COTPA in selected States. A total of 3849 and 2176 samples were assessed during the study in November 2020 and October 2021, respectively; using the EpiData Software. RESULTS: Average compliance with section 4 of COTPA was highest in Puducherry during baseline [51.88%, prevalence ratio (PR)=0.72, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.51-1.02] and in Telangana during endline assessment (66.1%, PR=0.6, 95% CI: 0.48-0.74). A visible change with section 5 of COTPA was observed in Telangana (40.08 to 93.12%, PR=0.04, 95% CI: 0.02-0.07). Compliance with section 6a of COTPA decreased in Puducherry (81.34 to 71.83%, PR=1.84, 95% CI: 1.14-2.95) and increased for Meghalaya and Telangana. The average compliance with sections 7, 8 and 9 (for Puducherry 51.09 vs . 48.8%, Meghalaya 54.94 vs . 46.18% and Telangana 73 vs . 51.91%, respectively) decreased in all States. An increase in average compliance was observed with sections 4 and 5 ( P =0.19 and 0.11, respectively) and a decrease with sections 7, 8 and 9 ( P =0.02) of COTPA in all three States. For sections 6a ( P =0.06) and 6b ( P =0.01), a mixed response was noted. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that the level of compliance with sections 4 and 5 of COTPA increased because they are strictly monitored compared to sections 7-9, which are less enforced by the States. There is a need to monitor sections 7-9 (pack warning) to fulfill the objectives related to the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
