BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) caused by osteoporosis is a common clinical fracture type. There are many surgical treatment options for OVCF, but there is a lack of comparison among different options. Therefore, we counted a total of 104 cases of OVCF operations with different surgical plans, followed up the patients, and compared the surgical outcome indications before, after and during the follow-up. METHOD: 104 patients who underwent posterior osteotomy (Modified PSO, SPO, PSO, VCR) and kyphosis correction surgery at our hospital between April 2006 and August 2021 with a minimum follow-up period of 24 months were included. All cases were injuries induced by a fall incurred while standing or lifting heavy objects without high-energy trauma. The mean CT value was 71 HU, which was below 110 HU, indicating severe osteoporosis. The indications for surgery included gait disturbance due to severe pain with pseudarthrosis, increased kyphotic angle, and progressive neurological symptoms. Pre- and postoperative CL, TLK, TK, PrTK, TKmax, GK, LL, PI, SS, PT, SVA, TPA, were investigated radiologically. Additionally, We evaluated estimated blood loss, surgical time and perioperative symptom. RESULT: The results show, after operation, TLK (37.32 ± 10.61° vs. 11.01 ± 8.06°, P < 0.001), TK (35.42 ± 17.64° vs. 25.62 ± 12.24°, P < 0.001), TKmax (49.71 ± 16.32° vs. 24.12 ± 13.34°, P < 0.001), SVA (44.91 ± 48.67 vs. 23.52 ± 30.21, P = 0.013), CL (20.23 ± 13.21° vs. 11.45 ± 9.85°, P = 0.024) and TPA (27.44 ± 12.76° vs. 13.91 ± 9.24°, P = 0.009) were improved significantly in modified Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (mPSO) after operation. During follow-up, TLK (37.32 ± 10.61° vs. 13.88 ± 10.02°, P < 0.001) and TKmax (49.71 ± 16.32° vs. 24.12 ± 13.34°, P < 0.001) were improved significantly in Modified PSO group. In additon, estimated blood loss (790.0 ± 552.2 ml vs. 987.0 ± 638.5 ml, P = 0.038), time of operation (244.1 ± 63.0 min vs. 292.4 ± 87.6 min, P = 0.025) were favorable in Modified PSO group compared to control group. CONCLUSION: To conclude, mPSO could acquire a favorable degree of kyphosis correction as well as fewer follow-up complications. Compared with other surgical methods, it also has the advantages of less surgical trauma and shorter operation time. It can be an effective solution for the treatment of OVCF.

Background: Reduced graft failure rates have been reported after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction combined with anterolateral complex (ALC) augmentation. However, the preoperative diagnosis of concomitant ALC injury remains a clinical challenge. Purpose: To identify the altered rotational tibiofemoral position on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in ACL-injured patients with concomitant ALC injury. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Based on the evaluation of ALC abnormalities on MRI scans by experienced surgeons, 123 patients with nonchronic (<3 months) ACL injury confirmed by arthroscopy were included. The patients were divided into 2 groups-an ALC-injured group (n = 57) and an ALC-intact group (n = 66). The altered rotational tibiofemoral position was evaluated and compared by quantitatively measuring internal rotational tibial subluxation (IRTS) and axial internal tibial rotation (ITRa) on MRI. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with concomitant MRI-determined ALC injury. Results: The ALC-injured group showed significantly increased IRTS (P < .001), ITRa (P < .001), lateral anterior tibial subluxation (ATS) (P < .001), and global ATS (GATS) (P = .002) compared with the ALC-intact group, while no significant difference in medial ATS (P = .810) was observed. A strong positive correlation was identified between IRTS and ITRa (rP = 0.809; P < .001). Multivariate analyses revealed that IRTS (P < .001) and GATS (P = .016) were associated factors for the presence of concomitant MRI-determined ALC injury. IRTS (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.734) was more strongly associated with the outcome than GATS (AUC = 0.658) in ROC analyses, suggesting a more significant internal rotational subluxation than anterior subluxation of the tibia. An IRTS threshold of 3.1 mm demonstrated a specificity of 84.2% for indicating the presence of concomitant MRI-determined ALC injury. Conclusion: The presence of concomitant MRI-determined ALC injury in ACL-injured patients was associated with a significant increase in IRTS and ITRa compared with those with intact ALC, indicating that these MRI measurements of the altered rotational tibiofemoral position could serve as potential quantifiable indicators for identifying concomitant ALC injury in clinical practice.

The kafirin derived from Jin Nuo 3 sorghum underwent a high-hydrostatic-pressure (HHP) treatment of 100, 300, and 600 MPa for 10 min to investigate alterations in its physicochemical attributes. The findings exhibited a reduction in protein solubility, declining from 83% to 62%, consequent to the application of the HHP treatment. However, this treatment did not lead to subunit-specific aggregation. The absorption intensity of UV light diminished, and the peak fluorescence absorption wavelength exhibited a shift from 342 nm to 344 nm, indicating an increased polarity within the amino acid microenvironment. In an aqueous solution, the specific surface area expanded from 294.2 m2/kg to 304.5 m2/kg, while the average particle-size value in a 70% ethanol solution rose to 26.3 nm. Conversely, the zeta-potential value decreased from 3.4 mV to 1.3 mV, suggesting a propensity for aggregation in ethanol solutions. A notable rise in the intermolecular ß-sheet content to 21.06% was observed, along with a shift in the peak denaturation temperature from 76.33 °C to 86.33 °C. Additionally, the content of disulfide bonds increased to 14.5 µmol/g. Collectively, the application of the HHP treatment not only enhanced the thermal stability but also induced a more ordered secondary structure within the kafirin.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differences in serum iron index and iron metabolizing protein expression in plaques in patients with different degrees of carotid artery stenosis and the relationship with plaque traits. METHODS: A total of 100 patients eligible for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) from August 2021 to February 2022 were included. Patients completed a computed tomography (CTA) scan for patient grouping and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for precise quantification of carotid plaque traits within 1 week prior to surgery. Clinical indicators associated with the progression of carotid stenosis to occlusion were analyzed using ordered logistic regression. Twenty carotid plaques were analyzed immunohistochemically to investigate the relationship between plaque traits and the iron metabolism indexes. RESULTS: No significant correlation between high serum ferritin (SF), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) and progression of carotid stenosis (OR 1.100, 95% CI 0.004-0.165, p = 0.039; OR 1.050, 95% CI 0.005-0.094, p = 0.031). SF and serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) were correlated with normalized wall index (NWI) (R = 0.470, p = 0.036; R = 0.449, p = 0.046), and the results of multiple linear regression suggested that SF and sTfR remained associated with NWI (R = 0.630, R2 = 0.397, Adjusted R2 = 0.326, p = 0.014). In plaques, H-type ferritin (H-FT) was correlated with NWI and lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC) volume (R = 0.502, p = 0.028; R = 0.468, p = 0.043). Transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) was correlated with LRNC volume and intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) volume (R = 0.538, p = 0.017; R = 0.707, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There were statistical differences in the expression of iron metabolism proteins in carotid plaques with different degrees of stenosis. Serum iron metabolism index (SF and sTfR) and expression of iron metabolizing proteins (H-FT and TfR1) in plaques were positively correlated with carotid plaque vulnerability index (NWI, LRNC volume).

BACKGROUND: The association between chronic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and inferior postoperative outcomes following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) has been highlighted in the literature. However, the inclusion of postoperative radiological assessments in previous studies has been limited. The aim of this study is to investigate whether chronic ACL injury is associated with an inferior tibiofemoral position measured on magnetic resonance (MR) images after primary ACLR. METHODS: A total of 62 patients that underwent primary ACLR were included in this study based on the time from injury to surgery, namely the acute ACL-injured group (within 6 weeks) and the chronic ACL-injured group (more than 1 year) and were matched 1:1 according to sex, age (± 2 years), and time from surgery to follow-up (± 3 months). Patient demographics, surgical records and follow-up data were retrieved and analyzed. The altered tibiofemoral position was measured quantitatively on preoperative and at least 1-year postoperative MR images and compared between the two groups, including the lateral, medial and global anterior tibial subluxation (LATS, MATS and GATS) and internal rotational tibial subluxation (IRTS). RESULTS: No significant differences in preoperative LATS, MATS, GATS or IRTS were identified between the acute and chronic ACL-injured groups. The chronic ACL-injured patients showed significantly increased postoperative MATS (p = 0.001) and GATS (p = 0.012), while no significant difference was identified in postoperative LATS or IRTS. Multivariate linear regression analyses showed that chronic ACL injury resulted in an estimated increase of 2.0 mm in postoperative MATS (p = 0.012) and 1.9 mm in postoperative GATS (p = 0.040). A significant improvement in postoperative LATS was observed in the acute ACL-injured group (p = 0.044) compared to preoperative LATS, while no improvements in these MRI measurements were observed in the chronic ACL-injured group. CONCLUSION: Chronic ACL-injured patients showed increased MATS and GATS measured on 1-year postoperative MR images after primary single-bundle ACL reconstruction, while no difference was identified in rotational tibiofemoral position. The acute ACL-injured group demonstrated a significant improvement in postoperative LATS, whereas no improvements were observed in the chronic ACL-injured group. Level of evidence Level III.

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have been widely used as alternatives to legacy BFRs. However, information on the contamination status and human exposure risks of electronic waste (e-waste)-derived NBFRs in the e-waste workplace is limited. In this study, six NBFRs and the legacy BFRs, hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), were analyzed in 50 dust samples from an e-waste-dismantling workplace in Central China. The dust concentration of NBFRs in e-waste-dismantling workshops (median, 157−169 ng/g) was found to be significantly higher than those in an outdoor environment (17.3 ng/g) (p < 0.01). Differently, the highest median concentration of HBCDs was found in dust from the dismantling workshop for cellphones and computers (367 ng/g) among studied areas. The bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-phthalate (BEHTBP) was the predominant compound, which contributed 66.0−88.0% of measured NBFR concentrations. NBFRs might originate from plastic and rubber materials in wastes based on the correlation and principal component analysis. Moreover, the total estimated daily intakes (average scenario) of NBFRs were calculated at 2.64 × 10−2 ng/kg bw/d and 2.91× 10−2 ng/kg bw/d for the male and female dismantling workers, respectively, via dust ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact pathways, which were lower than the reference dose values, and thus indicated a limited human exposure risk for NBFRs at the current level. Although the dust concentrations and daily intakes of NBFRs were still lower than those of other emerging pollutants (e.g., organophosphate and nitrogenous flame retardants) measured in the same sampling set, the elevated levels of NBFRs suggested the progressive BFR replacement process in China, which deserves more attention regarding their adverse effects on both the environment and human health.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is thought to be the most prevalent chronic joint disease, especially in Tibet of China. Here, we aimed to explore the integrative lncRNA and mRNA landscape between the OA patients of Tibet and Han. METHODS: The lncRNA and mRNA expression microarray profiling was performed by SurePrint G3 Human Gene Expression 8x60K v2 Microarray in articular cartilage samples from OA patients of Han nationality and Tibetans, followed by GO, KEGG, and trans-regulation and cis-regulation analysis of lncRNA and mRNA. RESULTS: We found a total of 117 lncRNAs and 297 mRNAs differently expressed in the cartilage tissues of Tibetans (n = 5) comparing with those of Chinese Han (n = 3), in which 49 lncRNAs and 158 mRNAs were upregulated, and 68 lncRNAs and 139 mRNAs were downregulated. GO and KEGG analysis showed that several unreported biological processes and signaling pathways were particularly identified. LncRNA-mRNA co-expression analysis revealed a remarkable lncRNA-mRNA relationship, in which OTOA may play a critical role in the different mechanisms of the OA progression between Tibetans and Chinese Han. CONCLUSION: This study identified different lncRNA/mRNA expression profiling between OA patients of Tibetans and Han, which were involved in many characteristic biological processes and signaling pathways.

Oval cells, a kind of hepatic progenitor cell quiescent at normal condition, activates to proliferate and differentiate into hepatocytes under severe and long-term liver injury, which usually raises severe inflammation. However, how oval cell survives in the inflammatory milieu interne is still unclear. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), mimicking inflammatory hepatic milieu interne, was used to treat oval cell line, WB-F344, to test the protective function of matrilin-2. In this study, our data suggested that matrilin-2 prevented TNFα-induced apoptosis in WB-F344 cells via inhibiting ASK1/MKK7/JNK pathway. In conclusion, we determined that matrilin-2 plays the key role in maintaining the survival of oval cell and guarantees its proliferation under various injury factors.

The study aimed to explore the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of chronic osteomyelitis observed in a northern China hospital. Clinical data of 255 patients with chronic osteomyelitis from January 2007 to January 2014 were collected and analyzed, including general information, disease data, treatment and follow-up data. Chronic osteomyelitis is more common in males and in the age group from 41-50 years of age. Common infection sites are the femur, tibiofibular, and hip joint. More g+ than g- bacterial infections were observed, with S. aureus the most commonly observed pathogenic organism. The positive detection rate from debridement bacterial culture is 75.6%. The detection rate when five samples are sent for bacterial culture is 90.6%, with pathogenic bacteria identified in 82.8% of cases. The two-stage debridement method (87.0%) has higher first curative rate than the one-stage debridement method (71.2%). To improve detection rate using bacterial culture, at least five samples are recommended. Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis with two-stage debridement, plus antibiotic-loaded polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads provided good clinical results in this study and is therefore recommended.

This paper presents a scheme for the enhancement of silicon solar cells in terms of luminescent emission band and photovoltaic performance. The proposed devices are coated with an luminescent down-shifting (LDS) layer comprising three species of europium (Eu)-doped phosphors mixed within a silicate film (SiO2) using a spin-on film deposition. The three species of phosphor were mixed at ratios of 0.5:1:1.5, 1:1:1, or 1.5:1:0.5 in weight percentage (wt %). The total quantity of Eu-doped phosphors in the silicate solution was fixed at 3 wt %. The emission wavelengths of the Eu-doped phosphors were as follows: 518 nm (specie-A), 551 nm (specie-B), and 609 nm (specie-C). We examined the extended luminescent emission bands via photoluminescence measurements at room temperature. Closely matching the luminescent emission band to the high responsivity band of the silicon semiconductor resulted in good photovoltaic performance. Impressive improvements in efficiency were observed in all three samples: 0.5:1:1.5 (20.43%), 1:1:1 (19.67%), 1.5:1:0.5 (16.81%), compared to the control with a layer of pure SiO2 (13.80%).

This study characterized the electrical and optical properties of single-junction GaAs solar cells coated with antireflective layers of silicon dioxide (SiO2), indium tin oxide (ITO), and a hybrid layer of SiO2/ITO applied using Radio frequency (RF) sputtering. The conductivity and transparency of the ITO film were characterized prior to application on GaAs cells. Reverse saturation-current and ideality factor were used to evaluate the passivation performance of the various coatings on GaAs solar cells. Optical reflectance and external quantum efficiency response were used to evaluate the antireflective performance of the coatings. Photovoltaic current-voltage measurements were used to confirm the efficiency enhancement obtained by the presence of the anti-reflective coatings. The conversion efficiency of the GaAs cells with an ITO antireflective coating (23.52%) exceeded that of cells with a SiO2 antireflective coating (21.92%). Due to lower series resistance and higher short-circuit current-density, the carrier collection of the GaAs cell with ITO coating exceeded that of the cell with a SiO2/ITO coating.
