ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This paper presents the results of an online survey and subsequent interviews investigating whether, how, and why public administrations of Brazilian states and the federal district (Federation Units) use open government data. According to the literature reviewed, the questions were categorized into four big groups: benefits, barriers, enablers, and drivers. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The Survey method, based on a questionnaire followed by interviews, was used to collect and analyze data from the open data officers of 26 Brazilian Federation Units. FINDINGS: The use of open government data is controversial as responses from the questionnaires and interviews do not match and raise questions about how well-represented each Federation Unit was. Evidence of open government data use was found. Among others, findings showed that political leadership committed to using open data facilitates and motivates public agents to use these data. Additionally, interviews indicated that the lack of human resources with the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to use open data is a relevant barrier to data use. Findings also revealed that open government data mainly support policy and decision-making processes. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This research contributed to the open data and public administration fields. It portrays diverse realities of open government data use and institutionalization in Brazilian state and district public administrations. In addition, it provides lists of open government data use benefits, barriers, drivers, and enablers from the perspective of these administrations so that they can benchmark against each other and improve their OGD use. ORIGINALITY AND RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS: For academia, this research provides empirical evidence of the factors influencing public administrations' use of open government data at the subnational level in Brazil. Even though Brazil ranks high on OGD global assessments, few studies on its use and reuse in the public sector were identified. This is one of the first academic studies focusing on open government data use in the country. It also contributes by offering to the academic community two instruments, a questionnaire and an interview protocol, which can be applied to other public settings to expand this study's results or open new research paths by applying them to other contexts.

ABSTRACT

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a predisposing factor for necrotic enteritis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a DON and Clostridium perfringens (CP) challenge on the intestinal morphology, morphometry, oxidative stress, and immune response of broilers. Additionally, we evaluated the potential of a Lactobacillus spp. mixture as an approach to mitigate the damage induced by the challenge. One-day-old broiler chickens (n = 252) were divided into seven treatment groups: Control, DON, CP, CP + DON, VL (DON + CP + viable Lactobacillus spp. mixture), HIL (DON + CP + heat-inactivated Lactobacillus spp. mixture), and LCS (DON + CP + Lactobacillus spp. mixture culture supernatant). Macroscopic evaluation of the intestines revealed that the CP + DON group exhibited the highest lesion score, while the VL and HIL groups showed the lowest scores. Microscopically, all Lactobacillus spp. treatments mitigated the morphological changes induced by the challenge. DON increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the jejunum, and CP increased ROS levels in the jejunum and ileum. Notably, the Lactobacillus spp. treatments did not improve the antioxidant defense against CP-induced oxidative stress. In summary, a Lactobacillus spp. mixture, whether used as a probiotic, paraprobiotic, or postbiotic, exerted a partially protective effect in mitigating most of the intestinal damage induced by DON and CP challenges.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli is a key indicator of food hygiene, and its monitoring in meat samples points to the potential presence of antimicrobial-resistant strains capable of causing infections in humans, encompassing resistance profiles categorized as serious threats by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), such as Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-a problem with consequences for animal, human, and environmental health. The objective of the present work was to isolate and characterize ESBL-producing E. coli strains from poultry, pork, and beef meat samples, with a characterization of their virulence and antimicrobial resistance profiles. A total of 450 meat samples (150 chicken, 150 beef, and 150 pork) were obtained from supermarkets and subsequently cultured in medium supplemented with cefotaxime. The isolated colonies were characterized biochemically, followed by antibiogram testing using the disk diffusion technique. Further classification involved biofilm formation and the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (blaCTX-M, AmpC-type, mcr-1, and fosA3), and virulence genes (eaeA, st, bfpA, lt, stx1, stx2, aggR, iss, ompT, hlyF, iutA, iroN, fyuA, cvaC, and hylA). Statistical analysis was performed via the likelihood-ratio test. In total, 168 strains were obtained, with 73% originating from chicken, 22% from pork, and 17% from beef samples. Notably, strains exhibited greater resistance to tetracycline (51%), ciprofloxacin (46%), and fosfomycin (38%), apart from ß-lactams. The detection of antimicrobial resistance in food-isolated strains is noteworthy, underscoring the significance of antimicrobial resistance as a global concern. More than 90% of the strains were biofilm producers, and strains carrying many ExPEC genes were more likely to be biofilm formers (OR 2.42), which increases the problem since the microorganisms have a greater chance of environment persistence and genetic exchange. Regarding molecular characterization, bovine samples showed a higher prevalence of blaCTX-M-1 (OR 6.52), while chicken strains were more likely to carry the fosA3 gene (OR 2.43, CI 1.17-5.05) and presented between 6 to 8 ExPEC genes (OR 2.5, CI 1.33-5.01) compared to other meat samples. Concerning diarrheagenic E. coli genes, two strains harbored eae. It is important to highlight these strains, as they exhibited both biofilm-forming capacities and multidrug resistance (MDR), potentially enabling colonization in diverse environments and causing infections. In conclusion, this study underscores the presence of ß-lactamase-producing E. coli strains, mainly in poultry samples, compared to beef and pork samples. Furthermore, all meat sample strains exhibited many virulence-associated extraintestinal genes, with some strains harboring diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) genes.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prevalence of painful neuropathy is around 7%-10% in the entire population, also, it may have different histories and require integrated care. Challenges for patient care are concerning, most of them have not achieved satisfactory results with drugs for pain management, which are often disabling, in addition to associated comorbidities such as sleep disorders and mood swings. Most of the drugs currently being used for neuropathic pain (NP) have several adverse effects, which hinders adherence to treatment and makes it impossible to reach the doses that would be indicated for proper management. Given this scenario, studies are being done aiming at the endocannabinoid system present in the human body with the ability to modulate pain, sleep, and mood disorders, among other benefits. Drugs such as phytocannabinoids, mainly the molecules cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), have been studied with significant potential for the treatment of painful neuropathy. This review aimed to describe the probable mechanisms of action of cannabinoids in NP and the results obtained so far with the use of these molecules. CONTENTS: This study is a narrative review of the literature. Data were analyzed using the databases National Library of Medicine (NCBI), Academic Google, Medline and scientific database configurations by LILACS and Web of Science in a temporal search between 2004 and 2022. A total of 45 articles were counted. CONCLUSION: THC modulates opioid effects in neuropathic pain. This is associated with a pharmacokinetic effect and has also been demonstrated by brain imaging. This significant performance can be associated with specific target sites and primary actors regarding Δ-9-THC and its binding to receptors associated with analgesia. Also, further studies with this component or associated with small cannabinoid variations are necessary to certify its role in neuropathic pain.


RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A neuropatia dolorosa tem prevalência estimada em toda a população em torno de 7% a 10%, pode ter diversas etiologias e requer cuidado integrado. O cuidado desses pacientes costuma ser desafiador, pois a maioria deles não obtém resultados satisfatórios com os fármacos disponíveis para manejo da dor que, muitas vezes, são incapacitantes, além das comorbidades associadas, como distúrbios do sono e alterações de humor. A maioria dos fármacos utilizados atualmente para o tratamento da dor neuropática (DN) apresenta diversos efeitos adversos, o que dificulta a adesão ao tratamento e impossibilita atingir as doses que seriam indicadas para o manejo adequado. Diante desse cenário, estudos estão sendo feitos visando o sistema endocanabinoide presente no corpo humano, que tem capacidade de modular a dor, sono e distúrbios do humor, entre outros benefícios. Fármacos como os fitocanabinoides, principalmente com as moléculas canabidiol (CBD) e tetrahidrocanabidiol (THC), têm sido estudados com potencial significativo para o tratamento da neuropatia dolorosa. Esta revisão teve o objetivo de descrever os mecanismos prováveis de ação dos canabinoides na DN e os resultados obtidos até o momento com a utilização dessas moléculas. CONTEÚDO: Este estudo é uma revisão narrativa da literatura. Os dados foram analisados utilizando as bases de dados National Library of Medicine (NCBI), Google acadêmico, Medline e configurações de bases científicas pela LILACS e Web of Science em uma busca temporal entre 2004 e 2022. Foram contabilizados 45 artigos. CONCLUSÃO: O THC modula os efeitos opioides na dor neuropática. Esta atuação é associada com efeito farmacocinético e foi demonstrada por imagens cerebrais. Esta atuação significativa pode ser associada com sítios alvo específicos e atuantes primários com relação ao Δ-9-THC e sua ligação a receptores associados à analgesia. Entretanto, mais estudos com este componente ou associado a pequenas variações canabinoides são necessários para afirmar a sua atuação na dor neuropática.

ABSTRACT

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by species of Penicillium and Aspergillus, agricultural product contaminants. Chronic and sub-chronic OTA intoxication by chickens ingesting contaminated feed, leads to health damages due to its hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, cytotoxic, immunotoxic, gastrotoxic, and possibly carcinogenic effects. As there are few data on acute intoxication, the present study evaluated the effects of a single acute OTA intoxication dose on immunological and hematological parameters in chicks. Sixteen one-day-old chicks were used, separated into two groups (n=8). A single dose of OTA (1400 µg kg-1 body weight) was administered, via gavage, for the OTA group and one dose of sterile PBS for the control group. On the 13th day, blood samples were collected to assess hematological and biochemical parameters, and on the 14th day, euthanasia and collection of lymphoid organs were performed. The animals of the OTA group demonstrated a significant decrease in total circulating leukocytes (p<0.001) with heteropenia (p<0.001) and lymphopenia (p=0.023), decrease hematocrit (p=0.020), hemoglobin (p=0.032), and plasma IgA (p =0.044), and increased plasma uric acid level (p=0.045), in relation to the control group. In addition, the animals intoxicated with OTA showed depletion of lymphoid cells in the bursa of Fabricius (p=0.016), but not in the thymus or spleen (p>0.05), compared to the control. For the other parameters: total plasma proteins, plasma IgY levels, and anti-Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vaccine titers from matrices, there were no significant differences between the analyzed groups (p>0.05), although there was a worsening tendency in contaminated animals. In conclusion, even a single acute OTA intoxication at a high dose, leads to the suppression of the systemic immune response, also affecting some hematological or biochemical parameters in chicks.


Ocratoxina A (OTA) é uma micotoxina produzida por espécies de Penicillium e Aspergillus, contaminantes de produtos agrícolas. Intoxicação crônica e subcrônica por OTA em frangos que ingerem ração contaminada, levam à danos à saúde devido aos seus efeitos hepatotóxicos, nefrotóxicos, citotóxicos, imunotóxicos, gastrotóxicos e possivelmente carcinogênicos. Como há poucos dados sobre intoxicação aguda, o presente estudo avaliou os efeitos de uma dose única de intoxicação aguda por OTA sobre parâmetros imunológicos e hematológicos em pintainhos. Foram utilizados 16 pintainhos de um dia de idade, separados em dois grupos (n=8). Uma dose única de OTA (1400 µg kg-1 de peso corporal) foi administrada, via gavagem, para o grupo OTA e uma dose de PBS estéril para o grupo controle. No 13º dia foram coletadas amostras de sangue para avaliação dos parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos, e no 14º dia foi realizada a eutanásia e coleta de órgãos linfoides. Os animais do grupo OTA demonstraram diminuição significativa do total de leucócitos circulantes (p<0,001) com heteropenia (p<0,001) e linfopenia (p=0,023), diminuição do hematócrito (p=0,020), hemoglobina (p=0,032) e IgA plasmática (p=0,044) e aumento do nível plasmático de ácido úrico (p=0,045), em relação ao grupo controle. Além disso, os animais intoxicados com OTA apresentaram depleção de células linfóides na bolsa de Fabricius (p=0,016), mas não no timo ou baço (p>0,05), em relação ao controle. Para os demais parâmetros: proteínas totais do plasma, níveis plasmáticos de IgY e títulos de vacinas contra o Vírus da Doença de Newcastle (NDV) das matrizes, não houve diferenças significativas entre os grupos analisados (p>0,05), embora tenha havido uma tendência de piora nos animais contaminados. Em conclusão, mesmo uma intoxicação única aguda por OTA em alta dose, leva à supressão da resposta imune sistêmica, afetando também alguns parâmetros hematológicos ou bioquímicos em pintainhos.

Clostridium perfringens is the etiological agent of NE, a disease that greatly affects the poultry industry. Experiments on the induction of NE are difficult to carry out, as it is a multifactorial disease, and thus different predisposing factors have been used. This study evaluated the effect of the Gumboro disease vaccine virus vaccine (IBDV-vac) associated or not with infection by Eimeria spp. in broilers, as a predisposing factor for NE. Broilers (n = 99) were divided into groups (11) challenged with IBDV-vac, Eimeria spp. CP type G (CP13, CP14 and CP03) or both. The macroscopic evaluation revealed that the highest average (3.45) of injury occurred for the CP13 + IBDV-vac group. The microscopic analysis showed that Eimeria spp. increased the population of intraepithelial lymphocytes and reduced the villus/crypt ratio in duodenum and jejunum when associated with CP13 or CP14. There was a synergistic effect between the CP strain used and the predisposing factors; nevertheless, it was not clear which was the most effective predisposing factor to potentiate the lesions, suggesting that the association of the strain with the factors should first be evaluated for each experimental protocol.

ABSTRACT

Considering the worrying emergence of multidrug resistance, including in animal husbandry and especially in food-producing animals, the need to detect antimicrobial resistance strains in poultry environments is relevant, mainly considering a One Health approach. Thus, this study aimed to conduct longitudinal monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in broiler chicken farms, with an emphasis on evaluating the frequency of resistance to fosfomycin and ß-lactams. Escherichia coli was isolated from broiler chicken farms (cloacal swabs, meconium, poultry feed, water, poultry litter, and Alphitobius diaperinus) in northern Paraná from 2019 to 2020 during three periods: the first period (1st days of life), the second period (20th to 25th days of life), and third period (40th to 42nd days of life). Antibiogram tests and the detection of phenotypic extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL) were performed, and they were confirmed by seaching for genes from the bla CTX-M group. The other resistance genes searched were mcr-1 and fosA3. Some ESBL bla CTX-M-1 group strains were selected for ESBL identification by sequencing and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction analysis. To determine the transferability of the bla CTX-M-1- and fosA3-carrying plasmids, strains were subjected to conjugation experiments. A total of 507 E. coli were analyzed: 360 from cloacal swabs, 24 from meconium samples, 3 from poultry feed samples, 18 from water samples, 69 from poultry litter samples, and 33 from A. diaperinus samples. Among the strain isolate, 80% (406/507) were multidrug-resistant (MDR), and 51% (260/507) were ESBL-positive, with the bla CTX-M-1 group being the most frequent. For the fosA3 gene, 68% (344/507) of the strains isolated were positive, deserves to be highlighted E. coli isolated from day-old chickens (OR 6.34, CI 2.34-17.17), when compared with strains isolated from other origins (poultry litter, A. diaperinus, water, and poultry feed). This work alerts us to the high frequency of the fosA3 gene correlated with the CTX-M-1 group (OR 3.57, CI 95% 2.7-4.72, p < 0.05), especially the bla CTX-M-55 gene, in broiler chickens. This profile was observed mainly in day-old chicken, with a high percentage of E. coli that were MDR. The findings emphasize the importance of conducting longitudinal monitoring to detect the primary risk points during poultry production.

Cyberchondria is a psychopathological behavior that affects people who compulsively consult the internet, by searching the symptoms of different pathologies from which they believe they are suffering, and when influenced by what they read, are sure they have some of these diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the cyberchondria level and associated factors among Brazilian and Portuguese dentists. A total 597 Brazilian and Portuguese dentists participated in this cross-sectional study. They were contacted via WhatsApp and asked to complete an online questionnaire on the Google Forms platform, from January 17 to 31, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic information was collected and cyberchondria was measured using the Portuguese language version of the Cyberchondria Severity Scale. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate the unadjusted and adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for theassociationofcyberchondria and covariates. Each covariate was individually included in the regression model, and the unadjusted OR (95% CI) was estimated. Most participants were Brazilian (62.8%), women (75.5%), married (60.5%) and with children (55.6%). Average age was 42.1 years (+ 12.5). In the final model, it was found that with each increase of one year in age, the chance of a high level of cyberchondria decreased (OR=0.97; 95% CI 0.95-0.98). Brazilian dentists were 1.85 times more likely (95% CI 1.25-2.75) to have a high level of cyberchondria than Portuguese dentists. Women were 1.62 times more likely (95% CI 1.07-2.44) to have a high level of cyberchondria than men. It was concluded that young age, Brazilian nationality, and female gender favored the high level of cyberchondria among the participants in this sample during COVID-19 pandemic.


A cibercondria é um comportamento psicopatológico que atinge as pessoas que consultam compulsivamente a internet, pesquisando os sintomas das diferentes patologias de que acreditam estar sofrendo e, quando influenciadas pelo que leem, têm a certeza de possuir alguma dessas doenças. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o nível de cibercondria e fatores associados entre dentistas brasileiros e portugueses. Participaram deste estudo transversal 597 dentistas brasileiros e portugueses. Eles foram contatados via WhatsApp e solicitados a preencher um questionário online na plataforma do Google Forms, no período de 17 a 31 de janeiro de 2021, durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Informações sociodemográficas foram coletadas e a cibercondria foi mensurada através da versão em língua portuguesa da Cyberchondria Severity Scale. Modelos de regressão logística binária foram usados para estimar a Odds Ratio (OR) não ajustada e ajustada e o intervalo de confiança(IC)de 95%correspondente para a associação de cibercondria e covariáveis. Cada covariável foi incluída individualmente no modelo de regressão, e o OR não ajustado (IC 95%) foi estimado. A maioria dos participantes eram brasileiros (62,8%), mulheres (75,5%), casados (60,5%) e com filhos (55,6%). A média de idade foi de 42,1 anos (+ 12,5). No modelo final, verificou-se que a cada aumento de um ano de vida, a chance de um nível elevado de cibercondria diminuía (OR = 0,97; IC95% 0,95-0,98). Os dentistas brasileiros tiveram 1,85 vezes mais probabilidade (IC95% 1,25-2,75) de apresentar alto índice de cibercondria quando comparados aos portugueses. As mulheres tinham 1,62 vezes mais probabilidade (IC 95% 1,07-2,44) de ter um alto nível de cibercondria em comparação com os homens. Concluiu-se que a idade mais jovem, a nacionalidade brasileira e o sexo feminino favoreceram o alto índice de cibercondria entre os participantes desta amostra durante a pandemia COVID-19.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the factors associated with the search by Brazilian and Portuguese dentists for oral health information on social networks during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 597 Brazilian and Portuguese dentists answered an online questionnaire between January 17 and 31, 2021. Respondents were asked about sociodemographic data, weight and height, hours of sleep per night, screen time for work and leisure, and where they sought information about general and/or oral health for themselves and for their loved ones and information about COVID-19. Descriptive statistics and binary regression were used for the statistical analysis. Most participants were Brazilian (62.8%) and 451 (75.5%) were female. Mean age was 42.1 years (± 12.5 years). For every lost hour of sleep, the chances of participants frequently or always searching for information about self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites increased by 1.33 times. For every additional hour spent on social networks or on the Internet, the likelihood of participants frequently searching for self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites increased by 17% (OR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.06-1.30). Individuals who searched the Internet for information about COVID-19 symptoms before consulting their doctors were 3.85 times more likely (95% CI: 2.22-6.67) to frequently or always search for information about self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites. Dentists used lay websites to search for general and oral health knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic, and shorter sleep duration favored screen use.

RESUMO A cibercondria é um comportamento psicopatológico que atinge as pessoas que consultam compulsivamente a internet, pesquisando os sintomas das diferentes patologias de que acreditam estar sofrendo e, quando influenciadas pelo que leem, têm a certeza de possuir alguma dessas doenças. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o nível de cibercondria e fatores associados entre dentistas brasileiros e portugueses. Participaram deste estudo transversal 597 dentistas brasileiros e portugueses. Eles foram contatados via WhatsApp e solicitados a preencher um questionário online na plataforma do Google Forms, no período de 17 a 31 de janeiro de 2021, durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Informações sociodemográficas foram coletadas e a cibercondria foi mensurada através da versão em língua portuguesa da Cyberchondria Severity Scale. Modelos de regressão logística binária foram usados para estimar a Odds Ratio (OR) não ajustada e ajustada e o intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95% correspondente para a associação de cibercondria e covariáveis. Cada covariável foi incluída individualmente no modelo de regressão, e o OR não ajustado (IC 95%) foi estimado. A maioria dos participantes eram brasileiros (62,8%), mulheres (75,5%), casados (60,5%) e com filhos (55,6%). A média de idade foi de 42,1 anos (+ 12,5). No modelo final, verificou-se que a cada aumento de um ano de vida, a chance de um nível elevado de cibercondria diminuía (OR = 0,97; IC95% 0,95-0,98). Os dentistas brasileiros tiveram 1,85 vezes mais probabilidade (IC95% 1,25-2,75) de apresentar alto índice de cibercondria quando comparados aos portugueses. As mulheres tinham 1,62 vezes mais probabilidade (IC 95% 1,07-2,44) de ter um alto nível de cibercondria em comparação com os homens. Concluiu-se que a idade mais jovem, a nacionalidade brasileira e o sexo feminino favoreceram o alto índice de cibercondria entre os participantes desta amostra durante a pandemia COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The use of run-over wild animals is an efficient strategy for scientific research of pathogens. The aim of this study was to detect DNA from phylum Apicomplexa in the brain of road-killed wild animals from the NorthCentral and North Pioneer mesoregions of Paraná, Brazil. Pre-established transects were run weekly; when found, animals were packed into individual packages and sent for autopsy. The brain fragments were collected and kept at -20 ° C until processing. The DNA extracted from the samples was amplified by nested-PCR for the 18S rDNA gene from the phylum Apicomplexa. All positive samples were submitted to DNA sequencing to define the species. A total of 90 animals were collected, however, only 68 animals (75.6%) that had integrity of the brain were included in the study. It was possible to identify the species by DNA sequencing in four samples: Sarcocystis spp. was identified in one Colaptes melanochloros (Greenbarred woodpecker) and one Mazama gouazoubira (Gray brocket). Neospora caninum was observed in a Leopardus pardalis (Ocelot) and T. gondii was present in Didelphis albiventris (white-eared opossum). The results indicated that parasites with economic and public health relevance were present in wild animals, which may favor infection of humans and animals.(AU)


O uso de animais silvestres atropelados é uma estratégia eficiente para a pesquisa científica de patógenos. O objetivo deste estudo foi detectar DNA de parasitas do filo Apicomplexa em amostras de cérebro de animais silvestres atropelados nas mesorregiões Centro-Norte e Pioneira do Norte do Paraná, Brasil. Os transectos pré-estabelecidos foram percorridos semanalmente; quando encontrados, os animais foram armazenados em embalagens individuais e enviados para autópsia. Os fragmentos cerebrais foram coletados e mantidos a -20 ° C até o processamento. O DNA extraído das amostras foi amplificado por nested-PCR para o gene 18S rDNA do filo Apicomplexa. Todas as amostras positivas foram submetidas ao sequenciamento de DNA para definição da espécie. Um total de 90 animais foram coletados, no entanto, foram incluídos no estudo apenas 68 animais (75,6%) que apresentavam encéfalo. No sequenciamento foi possível identificar parasitos apicomplexos pelo sequenciamento de DNA em quatro amostras: Sarcocystis spp. em Colaptes melanochloros (pica-pau-verde-barrado) e em Mazama gouazoubira (veadocatingueiro); Neospora caninum em Leopardus pardalis (jaguatirica); e T. gondii em Didelphis albiventris (gambá-de-orelha-branca). Os resultados demonstraram que protozoários com relevância econômica e de saúde pública estavam presentes em animais silvestres, o que pode favorecer a infecção de humanos e animais.(AU)

Abstract: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the factors associated with the search by Brazilian and Portuguese dentists for oral health information on social networks during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 597 Brazilian and Portuguese dentists answered an online questionnaire between January 17 and 31, 2021. Respondents were asked about sociodemographic data, weight and height, hours of sleep per night, screen time for work and leisure, and where they sought information about general and/or oral health for themselves and for their loved ones and information about COVID-19. Descriptive statistics and binary regression were used for the statistical analysis. Most participants were Brazilian (62.8%) and 451 (75.5%) were female. Mean age was 42.1 years (± 12.5 years). For every lost hour of sleep, the chances of participants frequently or always searching for information about self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites increased by 1.33 times. For every additional hour spent on social networks or on the Internet, the likelihood of participants frequently searching for self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites increased by 17% (OR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.06-1.30). Individuals who searched the Internet for information about COVID-19 symptoms before consulting their doctors were 3.85 times more likely (95% CI: 2.22-6.67) to frequently or always search for information about self-perceived oral health problems on lay websites. Dentists used lay websites to search for general and oral health knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic, and shorter sleep duration favored screen use.

After the growth-promoting antibiotics prohibition, intestinal health became an increasing concern worldwide in poultry farming. The intestinal histological evaluation is an inexpensive technique that brings relevant information, but in poultry, the immediate process of intestinal post-mortem autolysis interferes directly on the samples quality for histological analysis hindering a precise diagnosis. This study aimed to standardize a technique for broilers' intestines sample collection and fixation for histological analysis. Seven broiler chickens received a standard diet until 23 days of age when they were euthanized. Fragments of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were collected using three methods: intestine strips, transverse section, and Swiss roll and posteriorly fixed in 10% buffered formalin and bouin solution. Tissue samples were submitted for histological (number of villi and viable villi per field) and morphometrical (villi height, cryptdepth and villi:crypt ratio) evaluations and the results analyzed statistically. A significant high number of villiand viable villi per field in all regions was observed in the Swiss roll method. In the duodenum (p= 0.0066) and jejunum (p= 0.0058) an interaction between the Swiss roll method and the fixative buffered formalin was observed in the viable and number of villi per field, respectively. Regarding the morphometrical analysis significant differences were observed, in the jejunum villi height sampling by the methods Swissroll (1,157.66 ± 148.25 µm, p= 0.0015) that showed the highest mean. A avaliação histológica intestinal é uma técnica de baixo custo que traz informações relevantes, porém nas aves, o imediato processo de autólise intestinal post-mortem interfere diretamente na qualidade da amostra para histologia dificultando um diagnóstico preciso. Este estudo objetivou a padronização de uma técnica para coleta e fixação do intestino de frangos de corte para análise histológica. Sete frangos de corte receberam uma dieta padrão até 23 dias de vida, quando foram eutanasiados. Fragmentos de duodeno, jejuno e íleo foram coletados utilizando três métodos: intestino aberto, corte transversal e rocambole, e posteriormente fixados em formalina tamponada10% e solução de bouin. Background: The ingestion of foreign bodies in parrots has already been described and associated with the curious behaviorof the birds or with stressful conditions. Foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract are usually diagnosed through clinicalsigns, laboratory tests, and radiographic findings in the historical data. Foreign bodies are usually metallic and can lodgein any segment of the gastrointestinal tract, commonly found in the proventricle and gizzard. This study investigated acase of necrotizing hepatitis due to a foreign body in Ara ararauna (Linnaeus, 1758).Case: An approximately 9-month-old specimen of caninde macaw, had sudden death and was referred for autopsy. Themacroscopic examination revealed a fibrous, thick, reddish membrane involving the left hepatic lobe and partially the gizzard in continuity with the peritoneum. Inside the capsule, the liver had a friable and necrotic appearance and the gizzardhad a focal perforation area containing a foreign body (gavage tube feeding). We performed the histopathological examination of the liver and gizzard and observed that the membrane surrounding the liver and partially the gizzard had a chronicinflammatory process with a marked proliferation of fibrous tissue and fibrin deposition. The hepatic parenchyma of theleft lobe showed diffuse and marked necrosis, with signs of ischemic necrosis. In the region of transmural perforation ofthe gizzard, the mucosa showed a focal area of extensive necrosis accompanied by the presence of intralesional bacteria.The lesions observed are attributed to the perforation of the organs by the foreign body. It is not known whether the birdingested the object accidently during food handling as a young or due to the curious behavior of the bird or even the stressit may have been exposed to. BACKGROUND: During COVID-19 pandemic, children are confined at home, with changes in family routines. AIM: Evaluate sleep disorders among Brazilian and Portuguese children during social distancing, and its association with parental perception of child's oral hygiene. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, Portuguese and Brazilian parents/caregivers of 3- to 15-year-old children, practicing social distancing due to COVID-19 pandemic, answered an online questionnaire, from April 24-26, 2020, evaluating sociodemographic characteristics, child's school activities online, child's sleep quality during social distancing. Two questions from the questionnaire, developed based on previous studies, evaluated the parental perception of child's oral hygiene quality and routine changes during social distancing. Parents/caregivers answered five domains of the Portuguese-language version of the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children, evaluating sleep-breathing disorders, disorders of arousal, sleep-wake transition disorders, disorders of excessive somnolence and sleep hyperhidrosis. Descriptive, Linear-by-linear association, Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc analysis were performed (P ≤ .05). RESULTS: Participated in the study 253 parents/caregivers, 50.2% from Brazil. Most parents (72.2%) reported changes in child's routine during social distancing. Sleep breathing disorders (P = .019), sleep-wake transition disorders (P = .022), and disorders of excessive somnolence (P < .001) were associated with poor oral hygiene during social distancing. CONCLUSION: Sleep disorders are associated with poor oral hygiene during social distancing.
