Climate change and rapid population ageing pose challenges for communities and public policies. This systematic review aims to gather data from studies that present health indicators establishing the connection between climate change and the physical and mental health of the older population (≥ 65 years), who experience a heightened vulnerability to the impacts of climate change when compared to other age cohorts. This review was conducted according to the PICO strategy and following Cochrane and PRISMA guidelines. Three databases (PubMed, Scopus and Greenfile) were searched for articles from 2015 to 2022. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria,nineteen studies were included. The findings indicated that various climate change phenomena are associated with an elevated risk of mortality and morbidity outcomes in older adults. These included cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and mental diseases, along with physical injuries. Notably, the impact of climate change was influenced by gender, socioeconomic status, education level, and age-vulnerability factors. Climate change directly affected the health of older adults through ambient temperature variability, extreme and abnormal temperatures, strong winds, sea temperature variability, extreme El Niño-southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions and droughts, and indirectly by air pollution resulting from wildfires. This review presents further evidence confirming that climate change significantly impacts the health and well-being of older adults. It highlights the urgency for implementing effective strategies to facilitate adaptation and mitigation, enhancing the overall quality of life for all individuals.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular pre-excitation is characterized by the presence of atrioventricular accessory pathways, predisposing to arrhythmias. Although it is well established that risk stratification in symptomatic patients should be invasive, there is a lack of evidence of the benefit in asymptomatic. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate ventricular pre-excitation in the electrocardiogram (ECG) as a risk factor for overall mortality in patients of Telehealth Network of Minas Gerais (TNMG), Brazil. METHODS: This observational study was developed with the database of digital ECGs (2010-2017) from TNMG. The electronic cohort was obtained by linking data from ECG exams and those from the national mortality information system. Only the first ECG was considered. Clinical data were self-reported, and ECGs were interpreted manually by cardiologists and automatically by the Glasgow University Interpreter software. Hazard ratio (HR) for mortality was estimated using weighted Cox regression. RESULTS: Nearly 1 665 667 patients were included (median age: 50 [Q1: 34; Q3: 63] years; 41.4% were male). In a mean follow-up of 3.7 years, the overall mortality rate was 3.1%. The prevalence of ventricular pre-excitation was 0.07%. In multivariate analysis, adjusting for sex and age, ventricular pre-excitation was not associated with an increased risk of mortality (HR: 1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.56-3.57; p = .47) when compared to the whole sample or to patients with normal ECG (HR: 1.41; 95% CI: 0.53-4.36; p = .43). In a subanalysis on accessory pathway location, there was no evidence of a higher risk of death related to any location. CONCLUSION: Ventricular pre-excitation was not associated with an increased risk of mortality in a primary care cohort.

This study analyzes the allelic frequency distribution of 17 STRs contained in the AmpFlSTR Identifiler (Applied Biosystems) and PowerPlex16 System (Promega) commercial kits for two large population samples from the Azores archipelago (Portugal) (N=475) and from Central Portugal (N=2125). Likewise, it includes a comparative study among the population groups analyzed in this paper and those which history points out as originating from the first settlers of the Azores. All loci were highly polymorphic. The Central Portuguese area and the Azores archipelago population samples are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for the 17 markers analyzed.

17 Y-chromosome STR loci (DYS19, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS456, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS385 a/b, DYS458, DYS439, DYS635, GATA H4.1, DYS437, DYS438 and DYS448) were determined for 303 unrelated males, living in Central Portugal, using the AmpFlSTR YFiler PCR Amplification kit (Applied Biosystems). A total of 287 different haplotypes were found, 272 being unique. The overall haplotype diversity (HD) was determined as 0.9996, a value similar to other YFiler data sets. Y-STR polymorphisms in Central Portugal population, using YFiler, provide a powerful discrimination tool for routine forensic applications.

NO signaling is involved in many physiological processes in invertebrates. In crustaceans, it plays a role in the regulation of the nervous system and muscle contraction. Nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and 5' and 3' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) PCR generated a full-length cDNA sequence (3982 bp) of land crab NO synthase (Gl-NOS) from molting gland (Y-organ) and thoracic ganglion mRNA. The open reading frame encoded a protein of 1199 amino acids with an estimated mass of 135 624 Da. Gl-NOS had the highest sequence identity with insect NOS. The amino acid sequences for binding heme and tetrahydrobiopterin in the oxygenase domain, binding calmodulin and binding FMN, FAD and NADPH in the reductase domain were highly conserved. Gl-NOS had single amino acid differences in all three highly conserved FAD-binding sequences, which distinguished it from other NOS sequences. RT-PCR showed that the Gl-NOS mRNA was present in testis, ovary, gill, eyestalk neural ganglia, thoracic ganglion and Y-organ. NOS mRNA varied between preparations of Y-organ, thoracic ganglion and gill, while NOS mRNA was at consistently high levels in the ovary, testis and eyestalk ganglia. Immunohistochemistry confirmed that the Gl-NOS protein was expressed in Y-organ, ovary and gill. These results suggest that NOS has functions in addition to neuromodulation in adults, such as regulating or modulating ecdysteroid synthesis in the Y-organ.
