ABSTRACT

Worldwide, around 50 million people live with dementia, and this number is projected to triple by 2050. It has been estimated that 20% of all dementia cases have a predominant cerebrovascular pathology, while perhaps another 20% of vascular diseases contribute to a mixed dementia picture. Therefore, the vascular contribution to dementia affects 20 million people currently and will increase markedly in the next few decades, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and review management. VCI refers to the spectrum of cerebrovascular pathologies that contribute to any degree of cognitive impairment, ranging from subjective cognitive decline, to mild cognitive impairment, to dementia. While acute cognitive decline occurring soon after a stroke is the most recognized form of VCI, chronic cerebrovascular disease, in particular cerebral small-vessel disease, can cause insidious cognitive decline in the absence of stroke. Moreover, cerebrovascular disease not only commonly co-occurs with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and increases the probability that AD pathology will result in clinical dementia, but may also contribute etiologically to the development of AD pathologies.Despite its enormous health and economic impact, VCI has been a neglected research area, with few adequately powered trials of therapies, resulting in few proven treatments. Current management of VCI emphasizes prevention and treatment of stroke and vascular risk factors, with most evidence for intensive hypertension control. Reperfusion therapies in acute stroke may attenuate the risk of VCI. Associated behavioral symptoms such as apathy and poststroke emotionalism are common. We also highlight novel treatment strategies that will hopefully lead to new disease course-modifying therapies. Finally, we highlight the importance of including cognitive endpoints in large cardiovascular prevention trials and the need for an increased research focus and funding for this important area.

ABSTRACT

Introduction This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the quality of life (QoL) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with radiotherapy. Methods A systematic literature search was performed to identify relevant studies published until March 2022. Quality evaluation and data extraction were performed for the included studies, and meta-analysis was performed using Stata. Results Nine studies, including 1659 patients, were eligible. Most QoL scales developed at the end of the treatment course and then followed by a gradual recovery to 1 year and more than 1 year after treatment. However, some items have not changed significantly and have a deteriorating trend. Items of cognitive functioning and constipation in EORTC QLQ-C30, and sexuality, felt ill, and weight gain in EORTC QLQ- H&N35 showed that scales with follow-up of more than 1 year were worse than those within 1 year but still better than those after treatment. In the intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) subgroup in EORTC QLQ-C30, cognitive functioning was similar to those before, and there was no significant change in insomnia. There was no significant change in the teeth item in EORTC QLQ- H&N35. In the IMRT subgroup, scales of swallowing, felt ill, and weight gain with follow-up of more than 1 year were worse than those within 1 year. Conclusion The QoL of patients with NPC is significantly impaired after radiotherapy-treated compared to baseline, and most of these items will gradually improve.

ABSTRACT

The key pathogenesis of atherosclerosis(AS) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) lies in the combination of phlegm and stasis due to spleen deficiency. In Western medicine, it is believed that pyroptosis can lead to atherosclerosis, and endoplasmic reticulum stress has been shown to promote pyroptosis. According to the theories of " spleen in correlation with endoplasmic reticulum",guided by spleen governing transportation and transformation, and endoplasmic reticulum processing proteins, it is believed that the syndrome of phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency has similarities with the mechanism of macrophage pyroptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress in accelerating the progression of AS. This study explored the correlation between phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency and pyroptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress, and then analyzed the modern medical mechanisms of phlegm combined with stasis due to spleen deficiency in mediating atherosclerosis. The discussion enriches the theory of spleen in correlation with endoplasmic reticulum, provides research ideas on the prevention and treatment of AS by invigorating spleen, eliminating phlegm, and resolving stasis, and lays a theoretical foundation for the clinical application of spleen-invigorating TCM in the treatment of AS.

ABSTRACT

Foods that make up a typical diet are characterized by a rich set of sensory qualities that are perceived through multiple different modalities. It is well known that multisensory aspects of food are integrated to create our perception of flavor, which in turn affects our behavioral responses to food. However, the principles underlying multisensory integration of flavor-related sensory signals and how they inform perceptual judgments remain poorly understood, partly due to lack of control over flavor experience in human subjects. Here, we used rats as a model to overcome this limitation and tested the hypothesis that taste can enhance discriminability of retronasal odor cues. In a series of two-bottle tests, animals chose between two odorized solutions after learning to associate one of the odors with saccharin. When odors were highly similar, animals showed little preference for the saccharin-associated odor. When adding saccharin to both bottles-rendering one of the solutions' congruent-animals' preference for the saccharin-associated odor was significantly enhanced. No effect of taste was observed when using dissimilar odor pairs or novel taste stimuli. These findings suggest that congruent taste stimuli selectively enhance odor identity representations, aiding in the discriminability of perceptually similar flavors. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Psychiatric comorbidities suggest that symptoms overlap across different diagnoses; the transdiagnostic network approach is valuable for studying psychopathology. Childhood trauma is a common transdiagnostic risk factor for psychiatric disorders, but the complex relationship between childhood trauma and psychopathology has seldom been investigated using a large cross-sectional transdiagnostic sample. STUDY DESIGN: This study recruited 869 patients with different diagnoses, including 418 schizophrenia, 215 bipolar disorder, and 236 major depressive disorder. Participants completed psychiatric interviews and self-report questionnaires. We constructed dimension- and item-level Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator-based (LASSO) networks to explore the relationship between childhood trauma, psychopathology, and duration of illness. Moreover, we constructed directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to tentatively clarify the potential directions of associations among these variables. Network Comparison Tests (NCTs) were conducted for different diagnostic groups and gender-stratified groups. STUDY RESULTS: The transdiagnostic LASSO networks showed that different types of childhood trauma exerted distinct impacts on various psychopathological dimensions. Emotional abuse was linked to depressive symptoms, physical abuse to excited symptoms, sexual abuse to positive and disorganized symptoms, emotional neglect to depressive symptoms and motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits factor of negative symptoms, and physical neglect to MAP factor. The DAG findings generally concurred with the LASSO network. The NCT showed comparable networks. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that childhood trauma is significantly associated with the development of psychopathology across different diagnostic groups. The affective pathway model suggests that early identification and tailored interventions would be needed for people with a history of childhood trauma.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) contributes to the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. However, there was no study concerning the relationship between IL-6 concentrations and clinical features in the chronic phase of early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). AIM: To investigate the relationship between serum IL-6 concentration and the clinical features of EOS. METHODS: We measured serum IL-6 Levels from 74 patients with chronic schizophrenia, including 33 with age at onset < 21 years (EOS group) and 41 with onset ≥ 21 years in [adult-onset schizophrenia (AOS) group], and from 41 healthy controls. Symptom severities were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: Serum IL-6 concentrations were higher in both EOS and AOS groups than healthy controls (F = 22.32, P < 0.01), but did not differ significantly between EOS and AOS groups (P > 0.05) after controlling for age, body mass index, and other covariates. Negative symptom scores were higher in the EOS group than the AOS group (F = 6.199, P = 0.015). Serum IL-6 concentrations in the EOS group were negatively correlated with both total PANSS-negative symptom score (r = -0.389, P = 0.032) and avolition/asociality subscore (r = -0.387, P = 0.026). CONCLUSION: Patients with EOS may have more severe negative symptoms than those with adult-onset schizophrenia during the chronic phase of the illness. IL-6 signaling may regulate negative symptoms and its avolition/asociality subsymptoms among the early-onset chronic schizophrenic patients.

ABSTRACT

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) disorder characterized by systemic extranodal lesions. Common cases include skin lesions, whereas liver lesions are rare. This study presents a case of a 66-year-old woman with a solitary extranodal liver lesion who underwent successful surgical treatment followed by glucocorticoid therapy. The patient did not experience any symptoms before surgery. The liver lesion was incidentally discovered during a routine ultrasound examination. Enhanced CT scan revealed the lesion with the characteristic of washout, similar to primary hepatic cancer (HCC). CT scans of the head, neck, chest, and abdominal pelvis revealed no lymph node or other organ lesions. After surgery, the liver lesion was diagnosed as RDD, and subsequent whole-body examinations did not reveal any skin lesions. The definitive diagnosis was solid liver RDD in adults. Although there were no typical cases of bilateral cervical lymph node lesions, ultrasound and CT examinations promptly detected liver lesions, leading to the correct diagnosis through surgical resection. The findings from this case indicate that RDD can occur in rare extrasegmental areas, and the imaging characteristics of liver lesions are not specific, indicating the importance of avoiding delayed diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objective: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common subtype of thyroid cancer, accounting for up to 85-90% of cases, with the best overall prognosis and mostly inert tumors. However, some tumors are aggressive, causing metastasis, recurrence, and other bad outcomes. Preoperative inflammation indices, such as lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) in peripheral blood, have recently gained attention as nonspecific markers of inflammatory response in thyroid. In this study, we reviewed the interactions between preoperative inflammatory factors and outcomes in patients with PTC. Methods: This is a narrative review. We searched for English articles published between January 2014 and December 2023 on PubMed and Web of Science to identify how do these blood indicators affect the prognosis of patients with papillary thyroid cancer. Key Content and Findings: All retrievable indicators that have predictive significance for the prognosis of PTC were included, and the prognosis mainly included tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging, survival rate, recurrence, clinical and pathological risk factors such as lymph node metastasis (LNM), etc. From the general evidence, the prognostic predictive value of cell count alone was unknown, and low LMR was usually associated with poor prognosis, high NLR and high platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) usually indicated poor prognosis. Conclusions: These minimally invasive, low-cost, and easily obtainable blood indicators provide convenience for precise prognosis management of PTC patients, but many of the findings are conflicting and need to be validated by prospective studies that are more multi-sample, multi-centre and incorporate factors such as age that affect the immune response.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol stones affect a certain subpopulation of children. Concerns have been raised on the impact of gallbladder surgery on the growth of children and adolescents. AIM: To study the population characteristics, clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of gallstones in children. METHODS: The clinical data of 44 children with gallstones admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University from August 2009 to August 2021 were collected, the children were followed up by telephone to monitor their prognoses. The follow-up ended in August 2023. The shortest follow-up time was 2 years and 6 months, whereas the longest was 13 years and 11 months. The population characteristics, general clinical characteristics, and treatments were retrospectively analyzed. The children were divided according to whether they underwent surgical gallbladder removal into an operation group (n = 28) and a non-operation group (n = 16), The effects of surgical gallbladder resection on the growth and development of children were analyzed. RESULTS: The male-female ratio in the population was 6:5 and 84.09% of the children had onset in adolescence. Furthermore, 29.55% of the children were overweight or obese. The study identified 26 cases with metabolic abnormalities, 9 with hemolytic anemia, and 4 with choledochal cyst. Of the population, 68.18% had recurrent symptomatic cholecystolithiasis. Surgical treatment accounted for 63.64%, with laparoscopic cholecystectomy accounting for 71.43% of surgical treatment. No significant differences were observed in symptoms and complications between the surgery and non-surgery groups. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the two groups in the attainment of genetic height target and the rightward shift of height curve during follow-up. CONCLUSION: The sex characteristics of gallstones in children were not observed. Most gallstones occurred in adolescents and rarely in young children. A considerable proportion of children have inborn causes, which are often concurrent with metabolic abnormalities and hemolytic anemia. Most children had recurrent symptomatic gallstones. Surgical treatment, especially laparoscopic cholecystectomy, is still the main treatment for gallstones in children. Surgical treatment did not affect the growth and development of children who underwent gallstone removal.

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the infection status and genotypes of Enterocytozoon bieneusi (E. bieneusi) in sheep and goats in Jiangsu Province, a total of 786 fresh fecal samples from 18 farms across five regions in Jiangsu were collected and examined for the presence of E. bieneusi, and the genotype of E. bieneusi was examined using nested-PCR and sequencing of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer. The results showed that E. bieneusi was detected in the fecal samples of sheep and goats in all regions, with infection rates ranging from 23.65% to 42.81%. The overall infection rate was 36.51% (287/786). The infection rate of E. bieneusi showed no significant difference between sheep and goats, as well as among different ages of animals (p > 0.05), but showed a significant difference in sheep and goats with different health conditions (p < 0.05). The positive products were amplified and cloned and subjected to sequenced analysis. Six genotypes, BEB6, CHG2, CHG3, CHC8, CHG14, and COS-I, were found. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the six genotypes belonged to Group 2, which had previously been described as a non-zoonotic group.

ABSTRACT

The performance of covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) for the photocatalytic extraction of uranium is greatly limited by the number of adsorption sites. Herein, inspired by electronegative redox reactions, we designed a nitrogen-oxygen rich pyrazine connected COF (TQY-COF) with multiple redox sites as a platform for extracting uranium via combining superaffinity and enhanced photoinduction. The preorganized bisnitrogen-bisoxygen donor configuration on TQY-COF is entirely matched with the typical geometric coordination of hexavalent uranyl ions, which demonstrates high affinity (tetra-coordination). In addition, the presence of the carbonyl group and pyrazine ring effectively stores and controls electron flow, which efficaciously facilitates the separation of e-/h+ and enhances photocatalytic performance. The experimental results show that TQY-COF removes up to 99.8% of uranyl ions from actual uranium mine wastewater under the light conditions without a sacrificial agent, and the separation coefficient reaches 1.73 × 106 mL g-1 in the presence of multiple metal ions, which realizes the precise separation in the complex environment. Importantly, DFT calculations further elucidate the coordination mechanism of uranium and demonstrate the necessity of the presence of N/O atoms in the photocatalytic adsorption of uranium.

ABSTRACT

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a 28-year-old male patient with unipolar depression were reprogrammed with reprogramming factors by electroporation. The pluripotency of transgene-free induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) was verified by immunofluorescence staining for pluripotency markers, and these iPSCs were able to differentiate into the 3 germ layers in vitro. These iPSCs also showed normal karyotypes. Thus, we believe that these iPSCs could be valuable models for exploring the underlying biological mechanism of depression and the safety of antidepressants through the use of iPSCs differentiated into different kinds of neurons or brain organoids.

ABSTRACT

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with autoimmune characteristics. Recent research has made significant progress in the field of psoriasis metabolomics. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis on metabolomics of psoriasis. The objective of this study is to utilize bibliometrics to present a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge structure and research hotspots in psoriasis within the field of metabolomics. Methods: We conducted a bibliometric analysis by searching the Web of Science Core Collection database for publications on metabolomics in psoriasis from 2011 to 2024. To perform this analysis, we utilized tools such as VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix". Results: A total of 307 articles from 47 countries, with the United States and China leading the way, were included in the analysis. The publications focusing on metabolomics in psoriasis have shown a steady year-on-year growth. The Medical University of Bialystok is the main research institution. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences emerges as the prominent journal in the field, while the Journal of Investigative Dermatology stands out as the highly co-cited publication. A total of 2029 authors contributed to these publications, with Skrzydlewska Elzbieta, Baran Anna, Flisiak Iwona, Murakami Makoto being the most prolific contributors. Notably, Armstrong April W. received the highest co-citation. Investigating the mechanisms of metabolomics in the onset and progression of psoriasis, as well as exploring therapeutic strategies, represents the primary focus of this research area. Emerging research hotspots encompass inflammation, lipid metabolism, biomarker, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and arthritis. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that metabolism-related research is thriving in psoriasis, with a focus on the investigation of metabolic targets and interventions within the metabolic processes. Metabolism is expected to be a hot topic in future psoriasis research.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a significant role in axon regeneration following spinal cord injury. However, the functions of numerous miRNAs in axon regeneration within the central nervous system (CNS) remain largely unexplored. Here, we elucidate the positive role of microRNA-2184 (miR-2184) in axon regeneration within zebrafish Mauthner cells (M-cells). The upregulation of miR-2184 in a single M-cell can facilitate axon regeneration, while the specific sponge-induced silencing of miR-2184 leads to impeded regeneration. We show that syt3, a downstream target of miR-2184, negatively regulates axon regeneration, and the regeneration suppression modulated by syt3 depends on its binding to Ca2+. Furthermore, pharmacological stimulation of the cAMP/PKA pathway suggests that changes in the readily releasable pool may affect axon regeneration. Our data indicate that miR-2184 promotes axon regeneration of M-cells within the CNS by modulating the downstream target syt3, providing valuable insights into potential therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

Uranium poses severe health risks due to its radioactivity and chemical toxicity if released into the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent demand to develop sensing materials in situ monitoring of uranium with high sensitivity and stability. In this work, a fluorescent Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is synthesized by grafting Eu3+ cation onto TFPB-Bpy covalent organic framework (COF) synthesized through Schiff base condensation of monomers 1,3,5-tris(4-formylphenyl)benzene (TFPB) and 5,5'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy). The fluorescence of Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is enhanced compared with that of TFPB-Bpy, which is originated from the intramolecular rotations of building blocks limited by the bipyridine units of TFPB-Bpy coordinated with Eu3+. More significantly, Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is a highly efficient probe for sensing UO22+ in aqueous solution with the luminescence intensity efficiently amplified by complexation of UO22+ with Eu3+. The turn-on sensing capability was derived from the resonance energy transfer occurring from UO22+ to the Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy. The developed probe displayed desirable linear range from 5 nM to 5 µM with good selectivity and rapid response time (2 s) for UO22+ in mining wastewater. This strategy provides a vivid illustration for designing luminescence lanthanide COF hybrid materials with applications in environmental monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To review postoperative necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in patients with jejunoileal atresia (JIA) and to explore the potential risk factors related to the concurrence of NEC. Methods: Patients diagnosed with JIA who received surgical treatment from January 2016 to June 2021 were enrolled. Demographics, viral infection of the fetus, transfusion within 48 hours before NEC, sepsis before JIA repair, pathological and anatomical classification of JIA, combined malformation, occurrence time of NEC after the operation, treatment, and prognosis of patients were analyzed. Patients were divided into NEC group and non-NEC group, and all patients were followed up for 3-6 months to observe for complications. Results: A total of 180 patients with JIA were included, of whom 12 were diagnosed with NEC after surgery and 1 patient with NEC died during follow-up. The average age, birth weight, gestational age, proportion of premature infants, proportion of preoperative infections, and pathological classification of JIA did not significantly differ between the two groups. The probability of patients with proximal jejunal atresia (PJA) in the NEC group (58.3%) was higher than that in the non-NEC group (22.6%) (p=0.011), and patients with PJA had longer parenteral nutrition time than patients without PJA (26.64±9.21 days vs 15.11±6.58 days, p<0.001). Conclusion: PJA was more likely to be associated with concurrent NEC after surgery, which is a highly NEC-related risk factor inherent in JIA.

ABSTRACT

The hematopoietically-expressed homeobox gene (HHEX) played a critical role in regulating the immune system that the abnormality of which was involved in the psychopathology and cognitive deficits of psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of HHEX rs1111875 polymorphism on the susceptibility and cognitive deficits of first-episode schizophrenic patients (FSP). We assessed cognitive function in 239 first-episode patients meeting DSM-IV for schizophrenia, and 368 healthy controls using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The HHEX rs1111875 polymorphism was genotyped. Our results showed that the allelic and genotypic frequencies of HHEX rs1111875 polymorphism didn't differ between FSP and healthy controls (both p > 0.05) after adjusting for sex and age. Cognitive test scores in FSP were significantly lower than those in healthy controls on all scales (all p < 0.001) except for the visuospatial/constructional score (p > 0.05) after adjusting for covariates. There was a significant genotype (p < 0.05) rather than genotype × diagnosis (p > 0.05) effect on the delayed memory score after adjusting for covariates. The HHEX rs1111875 polymorphism was significantly associated with the delayed memory score in FSP (p < 0.05), but not in healthy controls (p > 0.05) after adjusting for covariates. Our findings supported that the HHEX rs1111875 polymorphism did not contribute to the susceptibility to FSP. However, this polymorphism might influence the delayed memory in FSP. Moreover, FSP had poorer cognitive function than healthy controls except for the visuospatial/constructional domain.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To observe the therapeutic effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) based on the theory of "qi ascending and descending movement" in patients after general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy, so as to explore the impact of TEAS on the autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal function of patients. METHODS: A total of 204 patients scheduled to undergo general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy were selected and randomly divided into control, double acupoints and multiple acupoints groups, with 68 cases in each group. For patients in the multiple acupoints group, TEAS was applied at Zusanli (ST36), Tiantu (CV22), Danzhong (CV17), Zhongwan (CV12), Taichong (LR3), and Neiguan (PC6) 30 min before anesthesia induction until the end of the surgery. In the double acupoints group, TEAS was applied only at ST36 and PC6. No electrical stimulation was applied in the control group. The postoperative bloating, bowel sound recovery time, first farting time, first defecation time, length of hospital stay, nausea and vomiting were compared among the three groups. Heart rate variability was monitored by twelve-lead electrocardiogram to evaluate the autonomic nervous function of the patients, including the low frequency power/high frequency power ratio (LF/HF), the standard deviation of all sinus RR intervals (SDNN), and the root mean square of difference between successive normal RR intervals (RMSSD). RESULTS: At 6 h and 24 h after surgery, the symptoms of bloating, nausea and vomiting in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group were significantly improved compared to the control group (P<0.05), and the multiple acupoints group was superior to the double acupoints group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the bowel sound recovery time, first farting time, first defecation time, and length of hospital stay were significantly shorter (P<0.05) in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group, and the multiple acupoints group was superior to the double acupoints group (P<0.05). At 1 d and 2 d after surgery, compared with the control group, LF/HF was decreased (P<0.05) while SDNN and RMSSD were increased (P<0.05) in the multiple acupoints group and double acupoints group, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TEAS treatment based on the theory of "qi ascending and descending movement" can relieve gastrointestinal dysfunction, reduce early postoperative sympathetic nerve excitement and maintain parasympathetic nerve tension in patients after general anesthesia laparoscopic cholecystectomy, thereby promoting gastrointestinal function recovery.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There are numerous videos related to rhinoplasty on TikTok in China. The objective is to examine videos on Chinese TikTok regarding rhinoplasty surgery and evaluate the content quality of rhinoplasty-related videos on TikTok. METHOD: We collected 184 Chinese video samples related to rhinoplasty and extracted basic information. We used the PEMAT-A/V tool to evaluate each video. RESULTS: A total of 184 videos were included in the study. The sampled videos received approximately 4.8 million likes, 900,000 comments, and 300,000 favorites. Most of the videos (n = 130, 70.65%) were posted by certified plastic surgeons on the TikTok platform. This study found that 6 (3.26%) videos contained obvious errors or misleading information. Regarding the PEMAT-A/V, the median total score was 85.71 (n = 184, IQR = 78.57-92.45%). Videos created by plastic surgeons had the highest comprehension score (n = 130, median = 100%, IQR = 91.67-100%), while videos from news media (n = 16, median = 75%, IQR = 70.76-77.34%) had the lowest usability and PEMAT-A/V total scores. In terms of video content, the PEMAT-A/V total score for surgical risks/contraindications related content (n = 15, median = 92.86%, IQR = 83.48-92.86%) was the highest, while scores for complaint-related content (n = 20, median = 75, IQR = 71.43-78.57%) were the lowest. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first report in China to evaluate the quality of information in nose plastic surgery-related videos on TikTok. We found that the quality of videos created by plastic surgeons on the TikTok platform is generally high, while videos provided by news media have lower quality. We encourage healthcare professionals to share more high-quality information on TikTok and educate patients on how to properly handle misinformation.
