Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes, and primary Sjögren's syndrome is a disease that poses a major threat to women's health. Therefore, studying these two diseases is of practical significance. In the field of spectral analysis, although common Raman spectral feature selection models can effectively extract features, they have the problem of changing the characteristics of the original data. The teacher-student network combined with Raman spectroscopy can perform feature selection while retaining the original features, and transfer the performance of the complex deep neural network structure to another lightweight network structure model. This study selects five flow learning models as the teacher network, builds a neural network as the student network, uses multi-layer perceptron for classification, and selects the optimal features based on the evaluation indicators accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. After five-fold cross-validation, the research results show that in the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy, the optimal accuracy rate can reach 98.3%, which is 14.02% higher than the existing research; in the diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome, the optimal accuracy rate can be reached 100%, which is 10.48% higher than the existing research. This study proved the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy combined with teacher-student network in the field of disease diagnosis by producing good experimental results in the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy and primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Metastasis, a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, frequently occurs early in the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, the precise molecular mechanisms governing the aggressive metastatic behavior of LUAD remain incompletely understood. In this study, we present compelling evidence indicating that the long noncoding RNA linc01703 is significantly downregulated in metastatic lung cancer cells. Intriguingly, in vivo experiments revealed that Linc01703 exerted a profound inhibitory effect on lung cancer metastasis without discernible impact on the in vitro proliferation or invasion capacities of LUAD cells. Mechanistically, Linc01703 enhanced the interaction between Rab27a, SYTL1, and CD81, consequently promoting the secretion of CD81+ exosomes. These exosomes, in turn, suppressed the infiltration of immune cells within the tumor microenvironment, thereby impeding LUAD metastasis. Importantly, our analysis of lung cancer tissues revealed a correlation between reduced CD81 expression and an unfavorable patient prognosis. Collectively, our findings suggest that Linc01703 functions as a metastasis suppressor by facilitating the secretion of CD81+ exosomes through the formation of the Rab27a/SYTL1/CD81 complex.

In order to rapidly screen microalgae species as feedstocks for antioxidants, extracts were obtained from 16 microalgae strains (under 11 genera, 7 classes) using two methods: a one-step extraction with ethanol/water and a three-step fractionating procedure using hexane, ethylacetate, and water successively. Measuring the total phenol content (TPC), total carotenoid content (TCC), and antioxidant activity of the extracts, indicating TPC and TCC, played an important role in determining the antioxidant activity of the microalgae. A weighted scoring system was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity, and the scores of microalgal samples from two extraction methods were calculated using the same system. Among the investigated microalgae, Euglena gracilis SCSIO-46781 had the highest antioxidant score, contributing to high TPC and TCC, followed by Arthrospira platensis SCSIO-44012, Nannochloropsis sp. SCSIO-45224, Phaeodactylum tricornutum SCSIO-45120, and Nannochloropsis sp. SCSIO-45006, respectively. Additionally, the above-mentioned five strains are currently being applied in commercial production, indicating this system could be effective not only for screening microalgal antioxidants, but also for screening microalgal species/strains with strong adaptation to environmental stress, which is a critical trait for their commercial cultivation.

Macrophages activation is crucial in pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases like ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Circular RNAs (circRNAs)-induced macrophage-associated inflammation participates in many autoimmune diseases but remains elusive in AS. Here, we verified increased expression of circIFNGR2 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with AS and its expression levels were correlated with the AS severity. In vitro assays revealed that circIFNGR2 enhances macrophage proliferation, and regulates M1/M2 macrophage polarization and NF-κB/Akt pathways. We identified that circIFNGR2 promoted the expression of iNOS/TNFα and M1 polarization, and restrained M2 polarization by sponging miR-939. Additionally, the RNA-binding protein, eIF4A3, was found to enhance the production of circIFNGR2. Interestingly, miR-939 attenuated joint damage in collagen-induced arthritis mice, whereas circIFNGR2 reversed this effect. Our findings highlight the pro-inflammatory roles of eIF4A3-induced circIFNGR2 in AS by modulating macrophage-associated inflammation through miR-939.

The importance of mRNA N6-methyladenosine (m6 A) modification during tumor metastasis is controversial as it plays distinct roles in different biological contexts. Moreover, how cancer cell plasticity is shaped by m6 A modification is interesting but remains uncharacterized. Here, this work shows that m6 A reader insulin like growth factor 2 mRNA binding protein 3 (IGF2BP3) is remarkably upregulated in metastatic lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and indicates worse prognosis of patients. Interestingly, IGF2BP3 induces partial epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) and confers LUAD cells plasticity to metastasize through m6 A-dependent overactivation of Notch signaling. Mechanistically, IGF2BP3 recognized m6 A-modified minichromosome maintenance complex component (MCM5) mRNAs to prolong stability of them, subsequently upregulating MCM5 protein, which competitively inhibits SIRT1-mediated deacetylation of Notch1 intracellular domain (NICD1), stabilizes NICD1 protein and contributes to m6 A-dependent IGF2BP3-mediated cellular plasticity. Notably, a tight correlation of the IGF2BP3/MCM5/Notch axis is evidenced in clinical LUAD specimens. Therefore, this study elucidates a critical role of m6 A modification on LUAD cell plasticity in fostering tumor metastasis via the above axis, providing potential targets for metastatic LUAD.

BACKGROUND: The disruption of the balance between osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in bone marrow contributes to the adipocytes accumulation and bone loss, which leads to the development of osteoporosis (OP). The circular RNA (circRNA), circRBM23, was generated from the RNA binding motif protein 23 (RBM23) gene. It was reported that circRBM23 was down-regulated in OP patients, but it remains unknown whether its down-regulation is involved in the lineage switch of MSCs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the role and mechanism of circRBM23 in regulating the switch between osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of MSCs. METHODS: The expression and function of circRBM23 in vitro were detected by qRT-PCR, alizarin red staining, and oil Red O staining. The interactions between circRBM23 and microRNA-338-3p (miR-338-3p) were analyzed by RNA pull-down assay, FISH, and dual-luciferase reporter assay. MSCs treated with lentivirus overexpression of circRBM23 was applied for both in vitro and in vivo experiments. RESULTS: CircRBM23 was expressed at lower levels in OP patients. Besides, circRBM23 was up-regulated during osteogenesis and down-regulated during adipogenesis of MSCs. CircRBM23 could promote the osteogenic differentiation but inhibit the adipogenic differentiation of MSCs. Mechanistically, circRBM23 acted as a sponge for microRNA-338-3p (miR-338-3p) to enhance the expression of RUNX family transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). CONCLUSIONS: Our research indicates that circRBM23 could promote the switch from adipogenic to osteogenic differentiation of MSCs via sponging miR-338-3p. It might improve the understanding of the lineage switch of MSCs and provide a potential target for diagnosing and treating OP.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a quantitative synthesis of studies on the relationship between vision impairment (VI) and cognitive outcomes in older adults. METHOD: A systematic search was undertaken of relevant databases for original articles published before April 2020. Random effect models were used to obtain pooled estimates of the associations between VI and cognitive outcomes (cognitive impairment and dementia) with subgroup analyses of VI measures, cross-sectional associations of VI with cognitive impairment, and longitudinal associations of baseline VI with incident cognitive impairment and dementia. Potential sources of heterogeneity were explored by meta-regression. Publication bias was evaluated with Egger's test. RESULTS: Sixteen studies including 76,373 participants were included in this meta-analysis, with five cross-sectional studies and eleven longitudinal studies. There was a significantly increased risk of cognitive outcomes with VI identified by subjective measures (odds ratio (OR)=1.63; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26-1.99) and objective measures (OR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.40-1.78). The odds of baseline cognitive impairment were 137% higher in older adults with VI compared with those without VI (OR = 2.37, 95% CI: 1.84-3.03) at baseline. Compared with older adults without VI at baseline, those with baseline VI had a higher relative risk (RR) of incident cognitive impairment (RR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.31-1.51) and dementia (RR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.19-1.75). CONCLUSIONS: VI was associated with increased risks of cognitive impairment and dementia across cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Additional research and randomized clinical trials are warranted to examine the implications of treatment for VI, such as wearing glasses and cataract surgery, to avoid cognitive impairment and dementia.

Circular RNA (circRNA) is often regarded as a special kind of non-coding RNA, involved in the regulation mechanism of various diseases, such as tumors, neurological diseases, and inflammation. In a broad spectrum of biological processes, the modification of the 76-amino acid ubiquitin protein generates a large number of signals with different cellular results. Each modification may change the result of signal transduction and participate in the occurrence and development of diseases. Studies have found that circRNA-mediated ubiquitination plays an important role in a variety of diseases. This review first introduces the characteristics of circRNA and ubiquitination and summarizes the mechanism of circRNA in the regulation of ubiquitination in various diseases. It is hoped that the emergence of circRNA-mediated ubiquitination can broaden the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.

Background: Vision impairment has become a prominent public health issue worldwide. However, little is known about vision impairment prevalence trends among the oldest-old adults in China. This study aimed to examine 20-year trends in the prevalence of vision impairment among the oldest-old Chinese adults and explore the contributions of sociodemographic variables, health behaviours, and chronic conditions to the trends. Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study used data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey during 1998-2018. A total of 45 849 participants aged ≥80 years at study entry were included. Vision impairment was assessed by an adapted Landolt-C chart at each wave. We examined unadjusted and adjusted nonlinear trends using generalized estimating equation models incorporating a natural cubic spline. We conducted linear regression models to estimate absolute annual prevalence changes and determine the contributions of sociodemographic variables, health behaviours, and chronic conditions to the trends. Results: The fully adjusted prevalence doubled from 5.5% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 5.1%-6.0%) in 1998 to 10.7% (95% CI = 9.9%-11.5%) in 2011 and slightly increased to 11.1% (95% CI = 10.3%-12.0%) in 2018 among the oldest-old Chinese population. Glaucoma, cataracts, cognitive impairment, hearing impairment, and urban residence were significant contributors to changes in vision impairment prevalence during 1998-2018. Differences in vision impairment prevalence associated with glaucoma and cataracts narrowed since 2005. Disparities in the trends among cognitively impaired and unimpaired older adults remained unchanged over time. Similar results were observed in older people with and without hearing impairment. Conclusions: Vision impairment prevalence among the oldest-old Chinese population increased from 1998 to 2011 and remained stable from 2011 to 2018. Future work is needed to improve the prevention and management of chronic diseases associated with vision impairment to reduce its prevalence.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine and compare the associations between different multimorbidity measures and mortality among older Chinese adults. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Using the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2002-2018, data on fourteen chronic conditions from 13,144 participants aged ≥65 years were collected. Multimorbidity measures included condition counts, multimorbidity patterns (examined by exploratory factor analysis), and multimorbidity trajectories (examined by a group-based trajectory model). Mortality risk associated with different multimorbidity measures was each analyzed using Cox regression. C-statistic, the Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI), and the Net Reclassification Index (NRI) were used to compare the performance of different multimorbidity measures. RESULTS: Participants with multimorbidity, regardless of measurements, had a higher risk of death compared with people without multimorbidity. Compared with the mortality prediction model using age and sex, C-statistics showed added discrimination (over 0.77, all P < .05) for models with multimorbidity measures. Multimorbidity trajectory showed integrated discrimination and net reclassification improvement for mortality prediction compared to condition count (IDI = 0.042, NRI = 0.033) and multimorbidity pattern (IDI = 0.041, NRI = 0.069). CONCLUSION: Adding multimorbidity measures significantly improved the performance of a mortality prediction model using age and sex as predictors. Trajectory-based measures of multimorbidity performed better than count- and pattern-based measures for mortality prediction.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are associated with depression. However, it is unclear whether coexisting CMDs may increase the risk of depression. We examined associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese. METHODS: Participants aged ≥45 years were enrolled from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2018 (N = 18,002). Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of ≥2 CMDs, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. We used generalized estimating equation models to examine associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms, including the dose effect of disease count and prevalent disease combinations, as well as individual and additive effects of specific CMDs. RESULTS: The prevalence of cardiometabolic multimorbidity was 24.5%. A higher number of CMDs had an additive dose effect on depressive symptoms that persisted consistently in specific CMDs. Stroke only, heart disease only, and diabetes only were each associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms compared with no CMDs. CMD combinations involving stroke, heart disease, or diabetes were each associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms compared with the absence of stroke, heart disease, or diabetes. LIMITATION: Self-reported chronic conditions. CONCLUSION: Stroke, heart disease, and diabetes showed individual and additive effects on CMD combinations, whereas hypertension and dyslipidemia only showed associations with depressive symptoms in combinations with other CMDs. These results suggest person-centered healthcare of mental health prevention and treatment for middle-aged and older adults with individual or multiple CMDs.

Microalgal polysaccharides have been reported in many studies due to their uniqueness, biocompatibility, and high value, and Rhodosorus sp. SCSIO-45730 was an excellent source of polysaccharides and ß-glucans. However, the polysaccharides from the red unicellular alga Rhodosorus sp. SCSIO-45730 have barely been studied. In this work, hot water extraction of Rhodosorus sp. SCSIO-45730 polysaccharides (RSP) was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design (BBD). The maximum RSP yield (9.29%) was achieved under the optimum extraction conditions: liquid-solid ratio of 50.00 mL g-1; extraction temperature of 84 °C; extraction time of 2 h; and extraction times of 5 times. The results of physicochemical characterization showed that RSP had high sulfate and uronic acid with content of 19.58% and 11.57%, respectively, rough layered structure, and mainly contained glucose, galactose, xylose, and galacturonic acid with mass percentages of 34.08%, 28.70%, 12.46%, and 12.10%. Furthermore, four kinds of antioxidant assays were carried out, and the results indicated that RSP had strong scavenging activities on ABTS and hydroxyl radical and moderate scavenging activities on DPPH and ferrous chelating ability. These results indicated that RSP showed potential as a promising source of antioxidants applied in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industry. Arthrospira platensis, a well-known cyanobacterium, is widely applied not only in human and animal nutrition but also in cosmetics for its high amounts of active products. The biochemical composition plays a key role in the application performance of the Arthrospira biomass. The present study aimed to evaluate the growth and biochemical composition characteristics of A. platensis, cultured with a nitrogen-free and seawater-supplemented medium in an outdoor raceway pond in winter. The results showed that the biomass yield could achieve 222.42 g m-2, and the carbohydrate content increased by 247% at the end of the culture period (26 d), compared with that of the starter culture. The daily and annual areal productivities were 3.96 g m-2 d-1 and 14.44 ton ha-1 yr-1 for biomass and 2.88 g m-2 d-1 and 10.53 ton ha-1 yr-1 for carbohydrates, respectively. On the contrary, a profound reduction was observed in protein, lipid, and pigment contents. Glucose, the main monosaccharide in the A. platensis biomass, increased from 77.81% to 93.75% of total monosaccharides. Based on these results, large-scale production of carbohydrate-rich A. platensis biomass was achieved via a low-cost culture, involving simultaneous nitrogen deficiency and supplementary seawater in winter.

The microalga Porphyridium accumulates high-value compounds such as phycoerythrin, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and polysaccharides, and thus, the extraction of these compounds could significantly expand the value of Porphyridium biomass. In the present study, a novel fractional extraction strategy based on the characteristics of these compounds was established using cold water, 95% ethanol, and hot water. The yield of phycoerythrin, lipids, and polysaccharides was 63.3, 74.3, and 75.2%, respectively. The phycoerythrin exhibited excellent fluorescence characteristics but had low purity. The crude lipid was dark with poor fluidity. Digalactosyldiacylglycerol and sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol containing C20:5 and C20:4 were the most abundant glycerolipids, while glucose, xylose, and galactose constituted the intracellular polysaccharides that had covalently bound to proteins (8.01%), uronic acid (4.13%), and sulfate (8.31%). Compared with polysaccharides and crude lipids, crude phycoerythrin showed the best antioxidant activity. Overall, the three-step fractional extraction process was feasible for Porphyridium; however, further purification is necessary for downstream applications.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To identify visual trajectories and examine their relationships with physical and cognitive function in older Chinese adults. DESIGN: Population-based longitudinal study. SETTING: The Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 16,151 participants aged ≥65 years. MEASUREMENTS: Visual, physical (including activities of daily living [ADL] and instrumental ADL [IADL]), and cognitive function were assessed at baseline and subsequently every 3 years. ADI disability and IADL disability were defined as needing any help in any item of the Katz scale and a modified Lawton's scale, respectively. Cognitive impairment was defined as a Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination score below 24. A group-based trajectory model was used to determine visual trajectories adjusted for age, sex, and education. Associations of visual trajectories with ADL disability, IADL disability, and cognitive impairment were evaluated using generalized estimating equation models adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: This study identified three distinct visual trajectories, including no decline (32.4%), moderate decline (48.3%), and progressive decline (19.3%) during the follow-up period. Compared with the no decline trajectory, both the moderate decline (ADL disability: OR = 2.75, 95% CI: 2.30-3.28; IADL disability: OR = 3.01, 95% CI: 2.74-3.31; cognitive impairment: OR = 3.37, 95% CI: 3.02-3.76) and the progressive decline (ADL disability: OR = 8.50, 95% CI: 6.55-11.02; IADL disability: OR = 12.96, 95% CI: 9.95-16.87; cognitive impairment: OR = 10.84, 95% CI: 8.89-13.23) trajectories were significantly associated with an increased risk of functional impairment. Compared with the moderate decline trajectory, the progressive decline trajectory was significantly associated with an increased risk of ADL disability (OR = 3.09, 95% CI: 2.46-3.89), IADL disability (OR = 4.30, 95% CI: 3.29-5.61), and cognitive impairment (OR = 3.22, 95% CI:2.63-3.93). CONCLUSION: Older Chinese adults exhibit three distinct visual trajectories and those with decline trajectories in vision have an increased risk of functional impairment than those with a trajectory of no decline in vision.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is a lethal biliary tract malignant neoplasm. Patient-derived primary cancer cell lines (PDPCs) are appropriate models to explore biological characteristics and potential therapeutics; however, there is a lack of PDPCs in GBC. In this study, we aimed to establish and characterize the GBC PDPCs, and further investigated the intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH). Multi-region sampling (3-9 regions) of the operable tumor tissue samples was used to establish PDPCs. Short tandem repeat genotyping for cell authentication and karyotyping was performed, followed by whole-exome sequencing and RNA sequencing to assess the ITH at the genetic and transcriptional levels, respectively. Thirty-eight PDPCs were successfully established from seven GBC patients and characterized. ITH was observed with a median of 38.3% mutations being heterogeneous (range, 26.6-59.4%) across all patients. Similar with other tumor types, TP53 mutations were always truncal. In addition, there were three genes, KMT2C, CDKN2A, and ARID1A, with truncal mutations in at least two patients. A median of 370 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was identified per patient. Distinct expression patterns were observed between major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II genes. We found the expression of MHC class II genes in the PDPC samples was closely regulated by CIITA, while that of MHC class I genes were not correlated with CIITA expression. The PDPCs established from GBC patients can serve as novel in vitro models to identify the ITH, which may pave a crucial molecular foundation for enhanced understanding of tumorigenesis and progression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between vision impairment (VI), vision correction (VC) and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese. METHODS: 22 203 participants aged ≥45 years from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011 to 2015 were divided into four self-reported VI categories: no VI, distance VI (DVI) only, near VI (NVI) only, and both distance and near VI (DNVI); and four self-reported VI/VC subgroups: VI(+)/VC(-), VI(+)/VC(+), VI(-)/VC(-) and VI(-)/VC(+). Depressive symptoms were evaluated by 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). RESULTS: Compared with no VI, DVI only (OR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.95, 2.31), NVI only (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.39, 1.63) and DNVI (OR = 2.75, 95% CI: 2.47, 3.07) were associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms. Compared with VI(+)/VC(-), VI(+)/VC(+) (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.98), VI (-)/VC(-) (OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.48, 0.53) and VI(-)/VC(+) (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.47, 0.54) were associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms. Compared with no VI at baseline, baseline DNVI was significantly associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms after two (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.16, 1.88) and four (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.68) years. Baseline depressive symptoms were significantly associated with higher odds of VI after two (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.34, 1.74) and four (OR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.34, 1.76) years. CONCLUSION: Adults with DNVI were more likely to report depressive symptoms in the future and those with depressive symptoms were more likely to report VI in the future. VC might be a protective factor for preventing depressive symptoms among adults with VI.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as important roles in various inflammatory processes of rheumatic diseases. However, their expression profiles and influences in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remain unclear. In this study, we revealed the differential expression profiles of circRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in AS by circRNA sequencing. We screened the differentially expressed circRNAs in AS and verified that hsa_circ_0000652 was upregulated and had potential to be a biomarker of progression. Functionally, hsa_circ_0000652 promoted proliferation and cytokine production in macrophages and inhibited apoptosis. Through dual-luciferase assays and RNA pull-down assays, we demonstrated that hsa_circ_0000652 acted as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by binding with hsa-miR-1179 and regulated OX40L, which is characterized as a co-stimulatory molecule and found to be upregulated in AS patients. As a result, hsa_circ_0000652 aggravated the inflammation in the coculture system containing CD4+ T cells and macrophages via OX40/OX40L interaction. Our findings suggest that hsa_circ_0000652 was upregulated in AS patients and may serve as a pro-inflammatory factor in macrophages and a positive regulator of OX40/OX40L by sponging hsa-miR-1179.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between vision impairment (VI), vision correction (VC), and cognitive function. METHOD: We included 20,677 participants aged ≥45 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2015). Participants were grouped into no VI, distance VI (DVI) only, near VI (NVI) only, or both distance and near VI (DNVI), and VI(+)/VC(-), VI(+)/VC(+), VI(-)/VC(-), or VI(-)/VC(+) further at baseline. Cognitive function at baseline and subsequently every two years was applied as a dependent variable in a generalized estimating equation model. RESULTS: DVI only, NVI only, and DNVI had significantly worse cognitive function over time than no VI (all p < .05). DNVI had significantly worse cognitive function over time than DVI only and NVI only (all p < .001). VI(+)/VC(+), VI(-)/VC(-), and VI(-)/VC(+) had significantly better cognitive function over time than VI(+)/VC(-) (all p < .05). VI(-)/VC(+) had significantly better cognitive function over time than VI(+)/VC(+) and VI(-)/VC(-) (all p < .05). CONCLUSION: Cognitive function was worse in middle-aged and older Chinese with VI, especially in those with DNVI. VC was associated with better cognitive function over time regardless of the status of vision.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, but there is a shortage of effective biomarkers for its diagnosis. AIM: To explore blood exosomal micro ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) as potential biomarkers for HCC diagnosis. RESULTS: The principal component analysis suggested that daily alcohol consumption could alter the blood exosomal miRNA profiles of hepatitis B virus positive non-HCC patients through miR-3168 and miR-223-3p. The miRNA profiles also revealed the tumor stages of HCC patients. High expression of miR-455-5p and miR-30c-5p, which significantly correlated with better overall survival in tumor tissues, could also be detected in blood exosomes. Two pairs of miRNAs (miR-584-5p/miR-106-3p and miR-628-3p/miR-941) showed a 94.1% sensitivity and 68.4% specificity to differentiate HCC patients from non-HCC patients. The specificity of the combination was substantially influenced by alcohol consumption habits. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that blood exosomal miRNAs can be used as new non-invasive diagnostic tools for HCC. However, their accuracy could be affected by tumor stage and alcohol consumption habits.
