ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of 55° wide-field (WF) spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) for detecting peripheral subretinal fluid (SRF) after surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, the retinal periphery was examined to evaluate the possible presence of persistent SRF after surgery. OCT scans were acquired in infrared mode to use any peripheral vessel as a landmark for better repeatability in monitoring fluid remnants. RESULTS: A total of 80 patients (10% with high myopia) were examined using 55° WF SD OCT after successful pars plana vitrectomy (83.8%) or scleral buckling (16.3%) for RRD. A total of 18 patients (22.5%), 16 of whom underwent pars plana vitrectomy and 2 who underwent scleral buckling, showed SRF at the OCT examination during the follow-up. Potential risk factors associated with SRF persistence were analyzed, revealing a significative association with young age (p = 0.009). After a follow-up period of 7.05 ± 2.44 months (ranging from 3 to 12 months), a complete resorption in all patients (100%) within 12 months was observed. Best-corrected visual acuity significantly improved in both groups over time. CONCLUSION: Using 55° WF SD-OCT successfully assessed the course of SRF reabsorption, offering a viable alternative for all those realities where technologies such as ultra-wide-field (UWF) OCT are not available.

ABSTRACT

We evaluated a new surgical technique for treating primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), consisting of localized vitrectomy near the retinal break associated with drainage of subretinal fluid without infusion. Twelve eyes of twelve patients with primary RRDs with macula-on superior, temporal, and/or nasal quadrants' RRD with retinal breaks between 8 and 4 o'clock, pseudophakic or phakic eyes, were enrolled. All eyes underwent a two-port 25-gauge vitrectomy with localized removal of the vitreous surrounding the retinal break(s), followed by a 20% SF6 injection and cryopexy. The difference between pre-operative (T0) and post-operative mean BCVA at 6 months follow-up (T6) was not statistically significant (0.16 logMAR vs. 0.21 logMAR; p = 0.055). Primary anatomic success at 6 months was achieved by 86% of patients. No other complications, except for two retinal re-detachments linked to an incorrect head position of the patients, were recorded. Although further studies are necessary to evaluate the treatment's efficacy, we believe our technique could be considered a valid alternative for managing primary RRD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cystoid macular edema after pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and identify possible related risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective monocentric study was conducted within a cohort of pseudophakic patients undergoing vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment between January 2019 and December 2022. Demographic data, initial and intraoperative characteristics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, and postoperative data were analyzed. Cystoid macular edema was defined on optical coherence tomography exclusively. RESULTS: A total of 164 eyes of 164 patients were included for analysis. The mean age of the patients at surgery was 65.7 ± 12.0 years. The mean best-corrected visual acuity was 2.1 ± 1.0 logMAR preoperatively and 1.0 ± 0.7 logMAR postoperatively. The mean follow-up was 13.4 ± 7.7 months. The prevalence of cystoid macular edema was 17.1% [9.8-26.4]. In multivariate analysis, severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy (relative risk 3.6 [1.3-9.7]) and laser retinopexy (relative risk 8.4 [1.1-64.7]) were independently and significantly associated with cystoid macular edema. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of cystoid macular edema in pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment after pars plana vitrectomy was 17.1%. Severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy stage and the use of endolaser retinopexy were independent risk factors for development of cystoid macular edema.

Life evolved in an acoustic world. Sound is perceived in different ways by the species that inhabit the Planet. Among organisms, also some algal species seem to respond to sound stimuli with increased cell growth and productivity. The purpose of this Short Communication is to provide an overview of the current literature about various organisms and sound, with particular attention to algal organisms, which, when subjected to sound applications, can change their metabolism accordingly.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate silica nanocomposites as topical drug delivery systems for the model drug, caffeine. Preparation, characterization, and skin permeation properties of caffeine-silica nanocomposites are described. Caffeine was loaded into the nanocomposites by grinding the drug with mesoporous silica in a ball mill up to 10 h and the efficiency of the process was studied by XRPD. Formulations were characterized by several methods that include FTIR, XRPD, SEM and TEM. The successful loading of caffeine was demonstrated by XRPD and FTIR. Morphology was studied by SEM that showed particle size reduction while TEM demonstrated formation of both core-shell and multilayered caffeine-silica structures. Solid-state NMR spectra excluded chemical interactions between caffeine and silica matrix, thus confirming that no solid state reactions occurred during the grinding process. Influence of drug inclusion in silica nanocomposite on the in vitro caffeine diffusion into and through the skin was investigated in comparison with a caffeine gel formulation (reference), using newborn pig skin and vertical Franz diffusion cells. Results from the in vitro skin permeation experiments showed that inclusion into the nanocomposite reduced and delayed caffeine permeation from the silica nanocomposite in comparison with the reference, independently from the amount of the tested formulation.

ABSTRACT

High energy ball milling (HEBM) has been used for the first time to prepare PEGylated magnetite-silica (Fe(3)O(4)-SiO(2)) nanocomposites intended to be used for biological purposes. Surface amine groups were introduced by a silanization reaction involving 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTS) followed by PEGylation to yield long-term stable and stealth nanocomposites of 200nm in diameter. The efficient coverage by PEG chains was shown by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) where PEGylated nanocomposites did not interact with BSA compared to non-PEGylated counterparts which led to a significant change in enthalpy. By cell viability (MTT) assays and cell morphology investigations, it was evidenced that PEGylated Fe(3)O(4)-SiO(2) nanocomposites did not provide any appreciable cytotoxicity on J774 macrophage and MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines. Furthermore, noticeable internalization was evidenced by J774 cells with PEGylated Fe(3)O(4)-SiO(2) nanocomposites in contrast to MCF-7 cells, in good agreement with the respective tendency of each cell line for endocytosis.
