Scott has had a long-standing interest in applying the tools of chemistry, engineering and physics to problems in biology and medicine. Amongst other things, Scott is best known for his contributions to developing microscopes and tools to image developing embryos. Earlier this year, Scott was awarded the SDB's 2021 Edwin G. Conklin Medal, which aims to recognize 'a developmental biologist who has made and is continuing to make extraordinary research contributions to the field, and is an excellent mentor who has helped train the next generation of outstanding scientists'. We caught up with Scott to find out more about his interdisciplinary research and his approach to mentoring.

ABSTRACT

Samantha Morris is an Assistant Professor of Genetics and Developmental Biology at Washington University in St Louis, and an Allen Distinguished Investigator. Her lab aims to understand how cell identity can be reprogrammed, focusing on the gene regulatory networks that define cell identity and applying this knowledge to engineer clinically important cell types. Sam has also been a pioneer in developing novel single-cell technologies and, earlier this year, she joined Development as an Associate Editor, where she'll be providing expertise on single-cell approaches in developmental and stem cell biology. We caught up with Sam to ask her more about her career and her role at Development.

Claudio, an elected fellow of the Royal Society, the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Latin-American Academy of Medical Sciences, was awarded the 2006 Waddington Medal by the British Society of Developmental Biology, and he also served as President of the International Society for Developmental Biology (ISDB) from 2010-2013. At the 18th Congress of the ISDB (Singapore, June 2017), Claudio was awarded the ISDB's Ross Harrison Prize, which recognises an individual's outstanding contributions to developmental biology. We met with Claudio to ask him more about his career, his thoughts on the field, and his advice for early career researchers.
