ABSTRACT

This analysis considers circulation of bacterial disease in wartime Ukraine. Anthrax, brucellosis, botulism and tularaemia are all naturally occurring in the country. The causative agents of these diseases also formed components of the biological weapons programme the Russian Federation inherited from the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. Differentiating between natural and unnatural outbreaks of disease in Ukraine is essential for combating disinformation and maintaining health security as the war intensifies.

ABSTRACT

We present the first measurement of the α-ß-ν angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller ß^{+} decay of ^{8}B. This was accomplished using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, expanding on our previous work on the ß^{-} decay of ^{8}Li. The ^{8}B result is consistent with the V-A electroweak interaction of the standard model and, on its own, provides a limit on the exotic right-handed tensor current relative to the axial-vector current of |C_{T}/C_{A}|^{2}<0.013 at the 95.5% confidence level. This represents the first high-precision angular correlation measurements in mirror decays and was made possible through the use of an ion trap. By combining this ^{8}B result with our previous ^{8}Li results, we demonstrate a new pathway for increased precision in searches for exotic currents.

ABSTRACT

The variability of seawater temperature through time is a critical measure of climate change, yet its reconstruction remains problematic in many regions. Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope (δ 18OC) measurements in foraminiferal carbonate shells can be combined to reconstruct seawater temperature and δ 18O (δ 18OSW). The latter is a measure of changes in local hydrology (e.g., precipitation/evaporation, freshwater inputs) and global ice volume. But diagenetic processes may affect foraminiferal Mg/Ca. This restricts its potential in many places, including the Mediterranean Sea, a strategic region for deciphering global climate and sea-level changes. High alkalinity/salinity conditions especially bias Mg/Ca temperatures in the eastern Mediterranean (eMed). Here we advance the understanding of both western Mediterranean (wMed) and eMed hydrographic variability through the penultimate glacial termination (TII) and last interglacial, by applying the clumped isotope (Δ 47) paleothermometer to planktic foraminifera with a novel data-processing approach. Results suggest that North Atlantic cooling during Heinrich stadial 11 (HS11) affected surface-water temperatures much more in the wMed (during winter/spring) than in the eMed (during summer). The method's paired Δ 47 and δ 18OC data also portray δ 18OSW. These records reveal a clear HS11 freshwater signal, which attenuated toward the eMed, and also that last interglacial surface warming in the eMed was strongly amplified by water-column stratification during the deposition of the organic-rich (sapropel) interval known as S5.

ABSTRACT

Our current understanding of ocean-atmosphere-cryosphere interactions at ice-age terminations relies largely on assessments of the most recent (last) glacial-interglacial transition, Termination I (T-I). But the extent to which T-I is representative of previous terminations remains unclear. Testing the consistency of termination processes requires comparison of time series of critical climate parameters with detailed absolute and relative age control. However, such age control has been lacking for even the penultimate glacial termination (T-II), which culminated in a sea-level highstand during the last interglacial period that was several metres above present. Here we show that Heinrich Stadial 11 (HS11), a prominent North Atlantic cold episode, occurred between 135 ± 1 and 130 ± 2 thousand years ago and was linked with rapid sea-level rise during T-II. Our conclusions are based on new and existing data for T-II and the last interglacial that we collate onto a single, radiometrically constrained chronology. The HS11 cold episode punctuated T-II and coincided directly with a major deglacial meltwater pulse, which predominantly entered the North Atlantic Ocean and accounted for about 70 per cent of the glacial-interglacial sea-level rise. We conclude that, possibly in response to stronger insolation and CO2 forcing earlier in T-II, the relationship between climate and ice-volume changes differed fundamentally from that of T-I. In T-I, the major sea-level rise clearly post-dates Heinrich Stadial 1. We also find that HS11 coincided with sustained Antarctic warming, probably through a bipolar seesaw temperature response, and propose that this heat gain at high southern latitudes promoted Antarctic ice-sheet melting that fuelled the last interglacial sea-level peak.

ABSTRACT

Research on global ice-volume changes during Pleistocene glacial cycles is hindered by a lack of detailed sea-level records for time intervals older than the last interglacial. Here we present the first robustly dated, continuous and highly resolved records of Red Sea sea level and rates of sea-level change over the last 500,000 years, based on tight synchronization to an Asian monsoon record. We observe maximum 'natural' (pre-anthropogenic forcing) sea-level rise rates below 2 m per century following periods with up to twice present-day ice volumes, and substantially higher rise rates for greater ice volumes. We also find that maximum sea-level rise rates were attained within 2 kyr of the onset of deglaciations, for 85% of such events. Finally, multivariate regressions of orbital parameters, sea-level and monsoon records suggest that major meltwater pulses account for millennial-scale variability and insolation-lagged responses in Asian monsoon records.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Using solution strontium and pH as independent variables, the metastable equilibrium solubility (MES) behavior of two carbonated apatite (CAP) samples has been examined, a high-crystallinity CAP (properties expected to be similar to dental enamel) and a low-crystallinity CAP (properties expected to be similar to bone mineral). CAP samples were prepared by precipitation/digestion: (CAP A: high-crystallinity, 1.3 wt% CO3, synthesized at 85 degrees C; CAP B: low-crystallinity, 6.4 wt% CO3, synthesized at 50 degrees C). Baseline MES distributions were determined in a series of 0.1 M acetate buffers containing only calcium and phosphate (no strontium) over a broad range of solution conditions. To assess the influence of strontium, MES profiles were determined in a similar fashion with 20, 40, 60, and 80% of the solution calcium being replaced on an equal molar basis by solution strontium. To determine the correct function governing CAP dissolution, ion activity products (IAPs) were calculated from the compositions of buffer solutions based on the hydroxyapatite template (Ca(10-n)Sr(n)(PO4)6(OH)2 (n = 0-10)) and the calcium/hydroxide deficient hydroxyapatite template (Ca(9-n)Sr(n)(HPO4)(PO4)5OH (n = 0-9)). FINDINGS: (a) for CAP A, at high solution strontium/calcium ratios, the MES profiles were essentially superimposable when the solution IAPs were calculated using the stoichiometry of Ca6Sr4(PO4)6(OH)2 and for CAP B by a stoichiometry of Ca7Sr2(HPO4)(PO4)5OH; (b) for CAP A, at low strontium/calcium ratios, the stoichiometry yielding MES data superpositioning was found to be that of hydroxyapatite and for CAP B, that of calcium/hydroxide deficient hydroxyapatite. When other stoichiometries were assumed, good superpositioning of the data was not possible.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to use the concept of metastable equilibrium solubility (MES) to describe the anomalous solubility behavior of carbonated apatite (CAP) in the presence of solution strontium. A CAP sample (4.8 wt% CO(3), synthesized at 70 degrees C) was prepared by precipitation. Baseline MES distributions were determined in a series of 0.1 M acetate buffers containing only calcium and phosphate (no strontium) over a broad range of solution conditions. In order to assess the influence of strontium, MES profiles were then determined in a similar fashion with 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80% of the solution calcium being replaced on an equal molar basis by solution strontium. From the compositions of the equilibrating buffer solutions, ion activity products (IAPs) of the form Ca(10-n)Sr(n)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2) (n = 0-10) were calculated in an attempt to determine the correct function governing the dissolution of the CAP preparation. The results demonstrate the following important findings: (a) at high solution strontium/calcium ratios (i.e., when 60% or more of the solution calcium was replaced by strontium), the MES profiles in all the experiments were found to be essentially superimposable when the solution IAPs were calculated using the stoichiometry of Ca(6)Sr(4)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2), and (b), at low solution strontium/calcium ratios (i.e., when 40% or less of the solution calcium was replaced by strontium), the stoichiometry yielding MES data superpositioning was found to be that of hydroxyapatite. When other stoichiometries were assumed, good superpositioning of the data was not possible.

ABSTRACT

The haemodynamic response to a fixed volume haemorrhage passes through three distinct phases: a normotensive, compensatory phase; a hypotensive, decompensatory phase; and a post-haemorrhage, recompensatory phase. The role of the forebrain and midbrain in regulating the triphasic response to a 'fast' (1.5%/min) or 'slow' (0.75%/min) rate of blood withdrawal (30% haemorrhage) was evaluated by comparing, in unanaesthetised rats, the effects of pre-collicular (PCD) vs. pre-trigeminal decerebrations (PTD). It was found that pre-trigeminal decerebration attenuated the decompensatory (hypotensive) phase to either a fast or slow haemorrhage. In contrast, pre-collicular decerebration attenuated the compensatory and recompensatory phases of the response to a 'fast' (but not a slow) haemorrhage. These results suggest that the integrity of (i) forebrain structure(s) are critical for compensatory and recompensatory responses to 'rapid' blood loss; and (ii) midbrain structure(s) are critical for the decompensatory response to progressive blood loss irrespective of rate.

ABSTRACT

The consequences of a severe traumatic injury--deep pain and haemorrhage--usually evoke a passive emotional coping reaction characterised by: quiescence and immobility, decreased vigilance, hypotension and bradycardia. Results of studies utilising microinjections of excitatory amino acids suggest that passive coping reactions are mediated, at least in part, by activation of the midbrain, ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) region. Further, experiments in anaesthetised rats, using the expression of the immediate-early gene, c-fos, as a marker of neuronal activation, report that pain arising from muscles, joints or viscera selectively activates the vlPAG. Anaesthesia alone, however, evokes substantial Fos-like immunoreactivity (IR) within the vlPAG and this may have obscured any differences in patterns of Fos expression following noxious deep somatic versus noxious visceral activation. In these experiments, in unanaesthetised rats, the effects of noxious spinal versus noxious vagal primary afferent activation were re-examined and distinct rostrocaudal patterns of Fos-expression were observed. Specifically: (i) injection of algesic substances into muscle, which preferentially activates spinal afferents, evoked Fos expression predominantly within the caudal vlPAG; whereas, (ii) noxious manipulations whose effects are mediated by (cardiopulmonary) vagal activation evoked preferential Fos-expression within the rostral vlPAG. On the other hand, hypotensive haemorrhage evoked substantial Fos expression along the entire rostrocaudal extent of the vlPAG, a finding which fits with suggestions that haemorrhagic shock is triggered by a combination of: (i) spinally-relayed nociceptive signals originating from ischaemic tissue, and (ii) vagally-relayed signals reflecting poor cardiac filling.

ABSTRACT

Previous research using microinjections of excitatory amino acids suggested that the caudal midline medulla (including nucleus raphe obscurus and nucleus raphe pallidus) contained a mixed population of sympathoexcitatory and sympathoinhibitory neurones. The results of this study indicate that different anaesthetic regimes (urethane versus halothane) determine whether sympathoexcitatory (urethane only) or sympathoinhibitory (halothane only) responses are evoked by stimulation within distinct caudal midline medullary regions. In addition, anaesthetic regimes also affect the caudal midline medullary-mediated response to haemorrhage. Specifically, under conditions of urethane anaesthesia, inactivation (lignocaine) of the midline medullary region immediately caudal to the obex, prematurely triggered and dramatically potentiated the hypotension and bradycardia evoked by 15% haemorrhage; whereas under halothane anaesthesia, inactivation of the same region had no effect. In contrast, under urethane anaesthesia, inactivation of the midline medullary region immediately rostral to the obex, delayed the onset of the hypotension and bradycardia to 15% haemorrhage; inactivation of the same region under halothane anaesthesia blocked haemorrhage-evoked hypotension and bradycardia. Our findings indicate that topographically distinct parts of the caudal midline medulla contain neurones (i) that differentially regulate the timing and magnitude of the compensatory (normotensive) versus decompensatory (hypotensive) phases of the response to haemorrhage; and (ii) whose activity is altered by urethane versus halothane anaesthesia.
