ABSTRACT

Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most commonly seen cause of poisoning in the emergency room (ER). The high affinity between carbon monoxide and hemoglobin and their complex biological characteristics greatly increase the risks of cardiac, nervous, muscular, and kidney diseases. In severe cases, patients may lose consciousness or die in just a few minutes. In recent years, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been applied extensively in patients with severe conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and cerebral hypoxia. Hyperbaric oxygen accelerates the decomposition of carbon monoxide in hemoprotein. Therefore, treating patients with similar conditions in the ER with hyperbaric oxygen as soon as possible will improve their cognitive disorder and postpone their neuropsychological sequelae. ER nurses typically play a decisive role in saving patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. This research scrutinizes a case analysis of using hyperbaric oxygen to treat carbon monoxide poisoning and offers general rules for the use of hyperbaric oxygen. Further, the research elaborates from the perspective of ER nursing staffs the management and care of acute carbon monoxide poisoning and hyperbaric oxygen therapy nursing care. The aim of this research is to offer references for members of the ER nursing team and to enable this team to provide accurate and effective medical measures to patients during the "golden hours" of nursing care. Achieving this will help ensure that patients receive comprehensive nursing and care, thus reducing the harm suffered by patients and increasing the rate of survival.

ABSTRACT

The electrical and magnetic properties of slightly Cu-deficient BiOCu(0.94)S are investigated using neutron diffraction, ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements. The Cu spins order in a ferromagnetic arrangement below T(C) = 250 K. An antiferromagnetic component develops below 180 K when the crystalline unit cell experiences a sharp thermal contraction upon cooling, resulting in a canted ferromagnetic spin arrangement at low temperatures. In the magnetically ordered state the electrical transport can be described using three-dimensional variable range hopping conduction. An applied magnetic field can effectively reduce the hopping barrier. Spin-charge couplings are clearly revealed when the resistivity departs from the hopping conduction and begins to increase with increasing temperatures above 250 K where the Cu spins become disordered.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic susceptibility, x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and Raman scattering measurements are employed to study the effects of La substitution on the magnetic properties of multiferroic HoMn(2)O(5). 9% and 18% La-substituted compounds crystallize into the same orthorhombic Pbam symmetry as the parent compound. The magnetic responses to an ac driving magnetic field between 40 and 140 K are greatly enhanced by 18% La substitution. The neutron magnetic diffraction patterns reveal the development of short range magnetic correlations below 140 K. In addition, two Raman peaks and a series of new x-ray diffraction peaks suddenly develop below this temperature. Incommensurate long range antiferromagnetic order appears below 38 K. Magnetic frustration could be the main mechanism governing the present observations.

ABSTRACT

While HER2/neu receptor tyrosine kinase is involved in various malignancies, studies on colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC) remain controversial. To try to clarify the role played by HER2/neu in CRC, sixty-seven CRC patients in Taiwan were analyzed. For this analysis, we used normalized dual-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Photoshop-aided immunohistochemistry (IHC) between cancers and their autologous non-neoplastic epithelia. The results revealed that HER2/neu status was unrelated to age, sex, location and positive-nodal percentage. Intramucosal carcinomas had earlier HER2/neu protein upregulation than regional stromal invasion within Dukes' A, and had a gene level that had not risen yet. Both gene gains and protein increases were significant in later stages in regards to volumetric progression and nodal-metastatic Dukes' stage. Overall, there were 1.53-fold (gene) and 1.81-fold (protein) increases from non-neoplastic enterocytes to CRCs. The upregulating directions of gene (88%) and protein (88%) presented symmetric agreement. Most CRCs exhibited low to intermediate levels of HER2/neu overexpression with double-minute gene amplicons and cytosolic HER2/neu proteins. Normalized FISH and IHC showed high cubic-regression correlation, especially in Dukes' C. According to the correlation curve, the points with IHC index >2.41 and FISH ratio >1.22 defined the area where gene-amplification-dependent HER2/neu overexpression was present. Eleven (16%) patients had values above the cut-off point (IHC = 2.41 and FISH = 1.22), including 7 (10%) cases in cytosolic and 4 (6%) cases in membranous HER2/neu overexpressions. The results suggest that HER2/neu plays a crucial role in CRC tumorigenicity with gene-amplification-independent transcriptional activations early in the carcinogenesis, and gene-amplification-dependent overexpression later in the advanced stages. This indicates that HER2/neu can be a good biological marker for selecting patients that may improve under therapies that employ adequate HER2/neu-targeting strategies.
