ABSTRACT

Ornithomimosauria consists of the ostrich-mimic dinosaurs, most of which showing cursorial adaptations, that often exhibit features indicative of herbivory. Recent discoveries have greatly improved our knowledge of their evolutionary history, including the divergence into Ornithomimidae and Deinocheiridae in the Early Cretaceous, but the early part of their history remains obscured because their fossil remains are scarce in the Aptian-Albian sediments. In recent years, many isolated ornithomimosaur remains have been recovered from the Aptian Kitadani Formation of Fukui, central Japan. These remains represent multiple individuals that share some morphological features common to them but unknown in other ornithomimosaurs, suggesting a monospecific accumulation of a new taxon. As a result of the description and phylogenetic analysis, the Kitadani ornithomimosaur is recovered as a new genus and species Tyrannomimus fukuiensis, the earliest definitive deinocheirid that complements our knowledge to understand the early evolutionary history of Ornithomimosauria. Due to its osteological similarity to Tyrannomimus, a taxon previously considered an early tyrannosauroid based on fragmentary specimens, namely Aviatyrannis jurassica, may represent the earliest ornithomimosaur from the Upper Jurassic of Europe, significantly expanding the temporal and biogeographic range of Ornithomimosauria. This finding fills a 20-million-year ghost lineage of Ornithomimosauria implied by the presence of the oldest fossil record of Maniraptora from the Middle Jurassic and is consistent with the hypothesis that their biogeographic range was widespread before the Pangaean breakup in the Kimmeridgian.

ABSTRACT

Palaeohistological analysis has numerous applications in understanding the palaeobiology of extinct dinosaurs. Recent developments of synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray micro-tomography (SXMT) have allowed the non-destructive assessment of palaeohistological features in fossil skeletons. Yet, the application of the technique has been limited to specimens on the millimetre to micrometre scale because its high-resolution capacity has been obtained at the expense of a small field of view and low X-ray energy. Here, SXMT analyses of dinosaur bones with widths measuring ∼3 cm under a voxel size of ∼4 µm at beamline BL28B2 at SPring-8 (Hyogo, Japan) are reported, and the advantages of virtual-palaeohistological analyses with large field of view and high X-ray energy are explored. The analyses provide virtual thin-sections visualizing palaeohistological features comparable with those obtained by traditional palaeohistology. Namely, vascular canals, secondary osteons and lines of arrested growth are visible in the tomography images, while osteocyte lacunae are unobservable due to their micrometre-scale diameter. Virtual palaeohistology at BL28B2 is advantageous in being non-destructive, allowing multiple sampling within and across skeletal elements to exhaustively test the skeletal maturity of an animal. Continued SXMT experiments at SPring-8 should facilitate the development of SXMT experimental procedures and aid in understanding the paleobiology of extinct dinosaurs.

ABSTRACT

High-energy X-ray micro-laminography has been developed to observe inner- and near-surface structures in dense planar objects that are not suitable for observation by X-ray micro-tomography. A multilayer-monochromator-based high-intensity X-ray beam with energy of 110 keV was used for high-energy and high-resolution laminographic observations. As a demonstration of high-energy X-ray micro-laminography for observing dense planar objects, a compressed fossil cockroach on a planar matrix surface was analyzed with effective pixel sizes of 12.4 µm and 4.22 µm for wide field of view and high-resolution observations, respectively. In this analysis, the near-surface structure was clearly observed without undesired X-ray refraction-based artifacts from outside of the region of interest, a problem typical in tomographic observations. Another demonstration visualized fossil inclusions in a planar matrix. Micro-scale features of a gastropod shell and micro-fossil inclusions in the surrounding matrix were clearly visualized. When observing local structures in the dense planar object with X-ray micro-laminography, the penetrating path length in the surrounding matrix can be shortened. This is a significant advantage of X-ray micro-laminography where desired signals generated at the region of interest including optimal X-ray refraction effectively contribute to image formation without being disturbed by undesired interactions in the thick and dense surrounding matrix. Therefore, X-ray micro-laminography allows recognition of the local fine structures and slight difference in the image contrast of planar objects undetectable in a tomographic observation.

ABSTRACT

The class Bivalvia (phylum Mollusca) is one of the most successful at survival groups of animals with diverse color patterns on their shells, and they are occasionally preserved in the fossil record as residual color patterns. However, the fossil record of the residual color patterns in freshwater bivalves could be traced only to the Miocene, greatly limiting color pattern evolution knowledge. We present the color patterns of the Cretaceous freshwater bivalves belonging to three extinct families of the order Trigoniida (hereinafter the Kitadani Freshwater Bivalves) from Japan, which is the oldest and the second fossil record of freshwater molluscan color patterns. The Kitadani Freshwater Bivalves consists of two types of color patterns: stripes along the growth lines and radial rays tapered toward the umbo, which resemble that of the colored bands of extant freshwater bivalves. This resemblance of the color patterns between the Kitadani Freshwater Bivalves and the extant species indicates that the color patterns of the freshwater bivalves represent the convergent evolution between Trigoniida and Unionida. To explain this convergent evolution, we advocate three conceivable factors: the phylogenetic constraints, monotonous habitats typical of freshwater ecosystems, and the predation pressure by visual predators in freshwater sediments.

ABSTRACT

The Early Cretaceous basal birds were known largely from just two-dimensionally preserved specimens from north-eastern China (Jehol Biota), which has hindered our understanding of the early evolution of birds. Here, we present a three-dimensionally-preserved skeleton (FPDM-V-9769) of a basal bird from the Early Cretaceous of Fukui, central Japan. Unique features in the pygostyle and humerus allow the assignment of FPDM-V-9769 to a new taxon, Fukuipteryx prima. FPDM-V-9769 exhibits a set of features comparable to that of other basalmost birds including Archaeopteryx. Osteohistological analyses indicate that FPDM-V-9769 is subadult. Phylogenetic analyses resolve F. prima as a non-ornithothoracine avialan basal to Jeholornis and outgroup of the Pygostylia. This phylogenetic result may imply a complex evolutionary history of basal birds. To our knowledge, FPDM-V-9769 represents the first record of the Early Cretaceous non-ornithothoracine avialan outside of the Jehol Biota and increases our understanding of their diversity and distribution during the time.

ABSTRACT

Our understanding of coelurosaurian evolution, particularly of bird origins, has been greatly improved, mainly due to numerous recently discovered fossils worldwide. Nearly all these discoveries are referable to the previously known coelurosaurian subgroups. Here, we report a new theropod, Fukuivenator paradoxus, gen. et sp. nov., based on a nearly complete specimen from the Lower Cretaceous Kitadani Formation of the Tetori Group, Fukui, Japan. While Fukuivenator possesses a large number of morphological features unknown in any other theropod, it has a combination of primitive and derived features seen in different theropod subgroups, notably dromaeosaurid dinosaurs. Computed-tomography data indicate that Fukuivenator possesses inner ears whose morphology is intermediate between those of birds and non-avian dinosaurs. Our phylogenetic analysis recovers Fukuivenator as a basally branching maniraptoran theropod, yet is unable to refer it to any known coelurosaurian subgroups. The discovery of Fukuivenator considerably increases the morphological disparity of coelurosaurian dinosaurs and highlights the high levels of homoplasy in coelurosaurian evolution.

ABSTRACT

We have already shown that major rice diterpene phytoalexin, momilactone A, was detoxified by Magnaporthe oryzae. We report here the identification by NMR, MS, and chemical synthesis of 3,6-dioxo-19-nor-9ß-pimara-7,15-diene (1) as the degradation intermediate. Compound 1 exhibited similar antifungal activity to that of momilactone A, indicating 1 to be a precursor of possible detoxified compounds.

ABSTRACT

Blast fungus-induced accumulations of major rice diterpene phytoalexins (PA), momilactones A and B, and phytocassanes A through E were studied, focusing on their biosynthesis and detoxification. In resistant rice, all PA started to accumulate at 2 days postinoculation (dpi), at which hypersensitive reaction (HR)-specific small lesions became visible and increased 500- to 1,000-fold at 4 dpi, while the accumulation was delayed and several times lower in susceptible rice. Expression of PA biosynthetic genes was transiently induced at 2 dpi only in resistant plants, while it was highly induced in both plants at 4 dpi. Fungal growth was severely suppressed in resistant plants by 2 dpi but considerably increased at 3 to 4 dpi in susceptible plants. Momilactone A treatment suppressed fungal growth in planta and in vitro, and the fungus detoxified the PA in vitro. These results indicate that HR-associated rapid PA biosynthesis induces severe restriction of fungus, allowing higher PA accumulation in resistant rice, while in susceptible rice, failure of PA accumulation at the early infection stage allows fungal growth. Detoxification of PA would be a tactic of fungus to invade the host plant, and prompt induction of PA biosynthesis upon HR would be a trait of resistant rice to restrict blast fungus.
