ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: Design and validation a photographic atlas of Peruvian foods to evaluate the food consumption of children from 6 to 12 months of age. METHODS: Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. 12 food groups were established according to their nutrient content. The atlas is designed to be applied to mothers, fathers, or caregivers of children from 6 to 12 months of age. The methodology was divided into four stages: i) selection of the food list, regional recipe books from Peru were reviewed, then interviews with mothers of children in the age range were verified for the final selection of the food list; ii) preparation and weighing of food, utensils were used to establish home measurements and with the established weight the macro and micronutrients were calculated with tables of composition of Peruvian foods; iii) development of the photographic session, a professional photographer with previous experience in similar works was used; and iv) expert validation, with the participation of 5 nutritionists with experience in infant feeding. RESULTS: The proposed atlas includes 57 foods with a total of 91 photographs. The content validity coefficient according to food category and in total obtained an assessment of 0.75 (Cohen's kappa coefficient), which gives it acceptable validity and agreement. CONCLUSIONS: The photographic atlas of food portions for infant feeding in Peru is a practical, reliable, and culturally appropriate visual tool to help estimate the amount of food consumed by this population, which will facilitate the estimation of food intake.

BACKGROUND: Probiotic bacteria inhibit aggregation, biofilm formation, and dimorphism of Candida spp. However, the effects of a new probiotic, Streptococcus dentisani, on the growth of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata biofilms are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of S. dentisani on the different phases of C. albicans and C. glabrata biofilm development. METHODS: Growth quantification and ultrastructural analyses were performed on biofilms of C. albicans ATCC 90028, C. glabrata ATCC 2001, and clinical isolates of C. albicans from oral candidiasis (CA-C1), caries (CA-CR1), and periodontal pocket (CA-P1) treated with cell suspensions of S. dentisani CECT 7746. Cell viability was determined by quantifying colony-forming units (CFU/mL). The ultrastructural analyses were done with atomic force microscopy. RESULTS: S. dentisani induced a significant reduction (p < 0.05) of CFU/mL of immature and mature biofilm in all strains of C. albicans and C. glabrata. Microscopic analysis revealed that S. dentisani reduced C. albicans density in mixed biofilm. The fungus-bacteria interaction affected cell membrane integrity in yeast. CONCLUSION: For the first time, our data elucidate the antifungal effect of S. dentisani on the development of C. albicans and C. glabrata biofilms, supporting its usefulness as a niche-specific probiotic to prevent and treat oral dysbiosis.

El propósito de este estudio fue analizar la influencia del autoconcepto físico en relación con la motivación de logro y las actitudes de estudiantes de enseñanza media en la asignatura de Educación Física y Salud. Además, se buscó explorar las disparidades en las percepciones entre hombres y mujeres, así como entre aquellos que participan en actividades físico-deportivas. Para llevar a cabo la investigación, se empleó un enfoque cuantitativo con un alcance descriptivo-correlacional, utilizando un cuestionario aplicado a una muestra de 279 estudiantes de la región del Biobío, Chile. Este instrumento evaluó diversas dimensiones del autoconcepto físico, la motivación de logro y las actitudes hacia la asignatura. Los principales resultados indican que la actividad física constante se vincula con una mejor evaluación en estas dimensiones. Los hombres muestran una percepción corporal más positiva y mayor disposición para la participación activa, mientras que las mujeres experimentan niveles elevados de ansiedad y percepción de dificultad. La actividad física constante se asocia con percepciones más favorables en diversas dimensiones. Estos resultados resaltan la importancia de considerar género y nivel de actividad física al diseñar estrategias educativas en Educación Física y Salud en la enseñanza media.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of physical self-concept in relation to achievement motivation and attitudes of high school students in the subject of Physical Education and Health. In addition, we sought to explore the disparities in perceptions between men and women, as well as between those who participate in physical-sports activities. To carry out the research, a quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational scope was used, using a questionnaire applied to a sample of 279 students from the Biobío region, Chile. This instrument evaluated various dimensions of physical self-concept, achievement motivation, and attitudes toward the subject. The main results indicate that constant physical activity is linked to a better evaluation in these dimensions. Men show a more positive body perception and greater willingness to actively participate, while women experience high levels of anxiety and perceived difficulty. Constant physical activity is associated with more favorable perceptions in various dimensions. These results highlight the importance of considering gender and level of physical activity when designing educational strategies in Physical Education and Health in secondary education.
O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência do autoconceito físico em relação à motivação e atitudes de realização de estudantes do ensino médio na disciplina de Educação Física e Saúde. Além disso, procuramos explorar as disparidades de percepções entre homens e mulheres, bem como entre aqueles que participam de atividades físico-esportivas. Para a realização da pesquisa foi utilizada uma abordagem quantitativa com escopo descritivo-correlacional, por meio de um questionário aplicado a uma amostra de 279 estudantes da região Biobío, Chile. A atividade física constante está associada a percepções mais favoráveis em diversas dimensões. Estes resultados destacam a importância de considerar o género e o nível de atividade física na concepção de estratégias educativas em Educação Física e Saúde no ensino secundário.

Currently, the responsible use of antimicrobials in pigs has allowed the continuous development of alternatives to these antimicrobials. In this study, we describe the impact of treatments with two probiotics, one based on live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and another based on fragmented S. cerevisiae (beta-glucans), that were administered to piglets at birth and at prechallenge with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Thirty-two pigs were divided into four groups of eight animals each. The animals had free access to water and food. The groups were as follows: Group A, untreated negative control; Group B, inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae positive control; Group C, first treated with disintegrated S. cerevisiae (disintegrated Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae; and Group D, treated with live S. cerevisiae yeast (live Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae. In a previous study, we found that on Days 1 and 21 of blood sampling, nine proinflammatory cytokines were secreted, and an increase in their secretion occurred for only five of them: TNF-α, INF-α, INF-γ, IL-10, and IL-12 p40. The results of the clinical evolution, the degree of pneumonic lesions, and the productive parameters of treated Groups C and D suggest that S. cerevisiae has an immunomodulatory effect in chronic proliferative M. hyopneumoniae pneumonia characterized by delayed hypersensitivity, which depends on the alteration or modulation of the respiratory immune response. The data presented in this study showed that S. cerevisiae contributed to the innate resistance of infected pigs.

Mutations in the lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) gene, which catalyzes the esterification of cholesterol, result in two types of autosomal recessive disorders: Familial LCAT deficiency (FLD) and Fish Eye Disease (FED). While both phenotypes are characterized by corneal opacities and different forms of dyslipidemia, such as low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), FLD exhibits more severe clinical manifestations like splenomegaly, anemia, and renal failure. We describe the first clinically and genetically confirmed case of FLD in Colombia which corresponds to a 46-year-old woman with corneal opacity, hypothyroidism, and dyslipidemia, who does not have any manifestations of renal failure, with two pathogenic heterozygous missense variants in the LCAT gene: LCAT (NM_000229.2):c.803G>A (p.Arg268His) and LCAT (NM_000229.2):c.368G>C (p.Arg123Pro). In silico analysis of the mutations predicted the physicochemical properties of the mutated protein, causing instability and potentially decreased LCAT function. These compound mutations highlight the clinical heterogeneity of the phenotypes associated with LCAT gene mutations.
ABSTRACT
Arabinoxylans (AXs) are compounds with high nutritional value and applicability, including prebiotics or supplementary ingredients, in food manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, the recovery of AXs may require advanced separation and integrated strategies. Here, an analysis of the emerging techniques to extract AXs from cereals and their by-products is discussed. This review covers distinct methods implemented over the last 2-3 years, identifying that the type of method, extraction source, AX physicochemical properties and pre-treatment conditions are the main factors influencing the recovery yield. Alkaline extraction is among the most used methods nowadays, mostly due to its simplicity and high recovery yield. Concurrently, recovered AXs applied in food applications is timely reviewed, such as potential bread ingredient, prebiotic and as a wall material for probiotic encapsulation, in beer and non-alcoholic beverage manufacturing, complementary ingredient in bakery products and cookies, improvers in Chinese noodles, 3D food printing and designing of nanostructures for delivery platforms.

BACKGROUND: Improving the mating competitiveness and survival of sterile males are direct means to increase the effectiveness of the sterile insect technique (SIT). Some insecticide growth regulators, such as the juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) methoprene, have been used to improve the mating competitiveness of male tephritid flies by reducing their sexual maturation period. However, the application of methoprene reduces fly resistance to stress and decreases survival. Here, we compared the effects of methoprene and pyriproxyfen (PPF), another JHA, in Anastrepha ludens males. PPF is an insect growth regulator that exhibits higher negative effects on the larval molting process than methoprene or natural juvenile hormone. Both compounds were administered at two doses (0.05% and 0.10%) via the male diet immediately after emergence. RESULTS: Our results show that both PPF and methoprene reduced male sexual maturation. However, PPF-treated males exhibited a shorter maturation period and obtained more matings at a given age than methoprene-treated males. No significant differences were observed between the two PPF doses tested (0.05% and 0.10%). Male survival was equally reduced by the two compounds. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that PPF accelerated sexual development without reducing the mating propensity of sterile male flies and can be used as a suitable alternative for methoprene. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

INTRODUCTION: Joubert syndrome is a rare disease of genetic origin with autosomal recessive inheritance and extreme genetic heterogeneity with more than 40 causative genes. Joubert syndrome 7 is caused by mutations in the RPGRIP1L gene. PATIENT CONCERNS: Our report describes a pediatric patient with clinical features compatible with JS type 7 such as hypotonia, developmental delay and aplasia of the cerebellar vermis. DIAGNOSIS: The clinical features and the MRI of the head and neck which showed alterations at the level of the posterior fossa, with absence of the vermis and horizontal disposition of the cerebellar peduncles, were compatible with Joubert syndrome. Whole exome sequencing detected the variants RPGRIP1L (NM_015272.2) c.697Aâ >â T (p. Lys233Ter) and RPGRIP1L (NM_015272.2) c.3545 del (p.Pro1182LeufsTer25). INTERVENTIONS: Resection was performed to correct the polydactyly. At age 2 years umbilical hernia, adenoid surgery and ventilatory tubes surgery were performed. Renal biopsy confirmed interstitial fibrosis and focally accentuated mild tubular atrophy with focal tubular hypertrophy, compatible with the clinical suspicion of Joubert syndrome. Congenital hip dislocation surgery was performed. The patient underwent surgery for correction of concomitant divergent strabismus and continued with glasses for astigmatism and hyperopia. OUTCOMES: Sanger sequencing confirmed the patient´s results and the father was found to be a carrier of RPGRIP1L (NM_015272.2) c.697Aâ >â T (p. Lys233Ter) and the mother and maternal grandmother as carriers of RPGRIP1L (NM_015272.2) c.3545del (p.Pro1182LeufsTer25). RPGRIP1L:c.3545del novel variant is a deletion which changes the reading frame, altering the RPGR1_C terminal domain and giving rise to an incomplete protein whose functions will be altered. CONCLUSION: This is the first genetically confirmed case of JS in Colombia, the first carrier of biallelic RPGRIP1L gene mutations with hip dislocation and incomplete glottic closure and the first report of the novel c.3545del likely pathogenic variant causing JS.

Congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (CMD1A) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the LAMA2 gene. CMD1A is characterized by peripheral hypotonia and muscle weakness from the first months of life, cerebral white matter abnormalities, and elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels. We describe an 8-year-old girl from Colombia with clinical features compatible with CMD1A, severe scoliosis corrected with surgery, and feeding difficulty corrected with a gastrostomy. Whole-exome sequencing identified two heterozygous variants: a reported nonsense variant (LAMA2 NM_000426.3:c.4198C>T) and a novel likely pathogenic variant (LAMA2 NM_000426.3:c.9227_9243dup). This is the first genetically confirmed case of CMD1A in Colombia and the first report of the c.9227_9243dup variant causing CMD1A.

Alleles in the VKORC1, CYP2C9, and CYP4F2 genes can influence Warfarin dose requirement. We aimed to determine the frequency of the polymorphisms in these genes in healthy individuals from Cali, Colombia. Observational study where total blood was collected from 107 healthy donors who attended a higher educational institution in Cali, Colombia. Sanger sequencing of exons 2, 3, 5, and 7 of the CYP2C9 gene; the common promoter region of CYP (rs12777823); exon 11 of CPY4F2 and the polymorphism c.-1639G > A in the VKORC1 gene promoter was performed. CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*3, CYP2C9*8, CYP2C9*9, CYP2C9*11, CYP4F2*3, rs12777823, and VKORC1*2 were detected. The latter had the highest frequency with 80 (74.8%) participants in a heterozygous or homozygous state. The least frequent allele was CYP2C9*11 with only 1 carrier. Combined haplotypes (VKORC1 *1/*2 or *2/*2 and CYP2C9 *1/*2 or *2/*2) were identified in 14 (13.7%) subjects. Both frequencies found in the VKORC1 and CYP2C9 alleles were similar to the ones reported for Latin Americans of European and Native American Ancestry. VKORC1*2 allele, the main genetic contributor to Warfarin dosing requirement, was the variant with the highest frequency (74.8% subjects, with a frequency of the alternative allele (A) of 50%). Our findings provide researchers with a greater insight regarding the frequency of common polymorphisms that affect anticoagulation treatment in the Cali (Colombia) population.

Objective: To describe the existing knowledge about the alterations of the MBO oral microbiome and the presence of OL Oral Lesions in patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ALL. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was carried out in the PubMed, SciELO, and academic Google databases, and descriptive, analytical, observational articles on MBO, OL, and ALL were included, following the PRISMA criteria. 642 were evaluated, duplicate articles, case reports, and those where only changes were reported during or after chemotherapy treatment were eliminated. Results: 10 articles were evaluated, published between 1997 and 2021, 4 articles agreed that the MBO of patients with ALL is in dysbiosis showing a significant increase in firmicutes 0.1%, bacillus 0.05%, and opportunistic bacteria such as Moraxella spp, Klebsiella spp 5.66%, Pseudomonas spp 3.77%, Enterobacter spp 1.88%, Acinetobacter spp 1.88% and E. coli 1.08%, the most frequent OL reported in 5 articles were spontaneous gingival bleeding 3.5%, gingivitis 25% and ulcers 9.4%. Conclusions: The oral cavity of patients with ALL is in dysbiosis and associated OL is identified. It is necessary to establish preventive strategies with a niche-ecological approach to restore the MBO, to reduce the risk of opportunistic infections and other OL during chemotherapy treatment.

Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw. (Cucurbitaceae) is a species native to Mexico and Central America. The collection, characterization, and evaluation of accessions maintained in genebanks is essential for the conservation of this species. However, there are no specific varietal descriptors that differ from those used in a phenetic approach and are adapted to international registration guidelines to help distinguish, improve, cluster, and protect intraspecific variants of common use and those obtained by breeding. Therefore, 65 morphological descriptors (qualitative and quantitative) were evaluated in 133 accessions obtained from Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica located in the National Germplasm Bank of S. edule in Mexico. These characteristics were observed to be phenetically stable for five generations under the same agroclimatic conditions. In addition, an analysis of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was applied to 133 samples from a set of 245 accessions. According to the multivariate analysis, 26 of the 65 descriptors evaluated (qualitative and quantitative) enabled differentiation of varieties of S. edule. The AFLP analysis showed a high level of polymorphism and genetic distance between cultivated accessions and their corresponding wild ancestor. The variations in S. edule suggest that the morphological characteristics have differentiated from an essentially derived initial edible variety (ancestral original variety), but unlike other cucurbits, there is no evidence of the ancestral edible for Sechium since the seed is unorthodox and there are no relicts.

Introducción: las infecciones asociadas a la atención de salud (IAAS) representan una problemática adicional a las condiciones clínicas que llevan a la persona a hospitalizarse ya que se incrementan las complicaciones. Objetivo: analizar el perfil epidemiológico de las IAAS de los pacientes atendidos en la Clínica Hospital Dr. Ismael Vázquez Ortiz de Querétaro, México. Metodología: estudio transversal, que consideró 571 registros con IAAS del periodo 2015 a 2019. Se elaboró tabla de supervivencia a intervalos de 7 días, se comparó promedio de días de estancia intrahospitalaria a partir del resultado de Gram en el cultivo. Se empleó un modelo de regresión de Cox para control de factores de confusión. Resultados: la mediana de estancia intrahospitalaria en pacientes con IAAS fue 13 días siendo la infección más frecuente la de sitio quirúrgico. Los 3 principales patógenos encontrados fueron Escherichia coli (24.3%), Pseudomona aeruginosa (11.2%) y Staphylococcus aureus (9.8%). Conclusiones: los días de estancia intrahospitalaria y los principales patógenos causantes de IAAS son similares a lo reportado en la literatura internacional; existen diferencias por tipo de infección nosocomial aunque esto podría deberse a la mayor proporción de adultos mayores que son atendidos en el Hospital Dr. Ismael Vázquez Ortiz de Querétaro.
Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent an additional problem to the clinical conditions that lead to hospitalization since complications are increased. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of HAIs in patients treated at the Dr. Ismael Vázquez Ortiz Hospital Clinic in Querétaro, Mexico. Methodology: Cross-sectional study, which considered 571 records with HAIs from 2015 to 2019. Survival table was elaborated at 7-day intervals, the average number of days of in-hospital stay was compared based on the Gram result in the culture. A Cox regression model was used to control for confounding factors. Results: The median in-hospital stay in patients with HAIs was 13 days, the most frequent infection being surgical site infection. The 3 main pathogens found were E scherichia coli (24.3%), Pseudomona aeruginosa (11.2%) and Staphylococcus aureus (9.8%). Conclusions: In-hospital days of stay and the main pathogens causing HAIs are similar to those reported in the international literature; there are differences by type of nosocomial infection, although this could be due to the higher proportion of older adults treated at the Dr. Ismael Vázquez Ortiz Hospital in Querétaro.

In this paper we present the design of an open-source and low-cost buoy prototype for remote monitoring of water quality variables in fish farming. The designed battery-powered system periodically measures temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen, transmitting the information locally through a low-power wide-area network protocol to a gateway connected to a cloud service for data storage and visualization. We provide a novel buoy design that can be easily constructed with off-the-shelf materials, delivering a stable anchored float for the IoT device and the probes immersed in the water pond. The prototype was tested at an operating fish farm, showing promising results for a low-cost remote monitoring tool that enables automatic data acquisition and storage in fish farming scenarios. All the elements of this design, including hardware and software designs, are freely available under permissive licenses as an open-source project.

Introducción: El reconocimiento temprano de los sujetos con malaria que pueden desarrollar complicaciones es fundamental para orientar el tratamiento. Se requiere un instrumento de predicción basado en características clínicas para predecir las complicaciones. Objetivo: Desarrollar y validar una herramienta de predicción clínica y paraclínica para predecir malaria complicada. Métodos: Se reclutaron de manera secuencial sujetos con diagnóstico de malaria complicada según criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Las características clínicas que se asociaron a malaria complicada fueron identificadas e incorporadas en un modelo de predicción logístico binario en una cohorte inicial de derivación y posteriormente validadas en una cohorte diferente de sujetos con la infección. Resultados: Se analizaron 584 sujetos en la cohorte de derivación y 898 en la cohorte de validación. La incidencia de malaria complicada fue de 21,2 por ciento y 10,9 por ciento, respectivamente. Las variables asociadas con malaria complicada fueron la disnea, fiebre por más de 72 horas, hemoglobina < 13 mg/dL, bilirrubina total > 6 mg/dL, nitrógeno ureico > 20 mg/dL, y Plasmodium vivax. El área bajo la curva de características operativas del receptor para el puntaje construido con estas variables en la cohorte de derivación fue de 0,70 y en la cohorte de validación fue de 0,69. Conclusión: Un puntaje pronóstico en pacientes con malaria que evalúe la presencia de disnea, fiebre persistente, nivel de hemoglobina, bilirrubina total, nitrógeno ureico e infección por P. vivax puede ser útil para clasificar de manera oportuna y objetiva a los sujetos que pueden desarrollar complicaciones(AU)
Introduction: Early identification of subjects with malaria who may develop complications is critical to guide treatment. A predictive tool based on the clinical characteristics of the disease is required to predict complications. Objective: To develop and validate a clinical and paraclinical tool to predict complicated malaria. Methods: Subjects with a diagnosis of complicated malaria according to the World Health Organization criteria were sequentially recruited. Clinical characteristics associated with complicated malaria were identified and incorporated into a binary logistic prediction model in an initial derivation cohort and, subsequently, validated in a different cohort of subjects with the infection. Results: 584 subjects were analyzed in the derivation cohort and 898 in the validation cohort. The incidence of complicated malaria was 21.2 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively. Variables associated with complicated malaria were dyspnea, fever for more than 72 hours, hemoglobin < 13 mg/dL, total bilirubin > 6 mg/dL, urea nitrogen > 20 mg/dL and Plasmodium vivax. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve for the score constructed with these variables in the derivation cohort was 0.70 and in the validation cohort, it was 0.69. Conclusion: A prognostic score that evaluates the presence of dyspnea, persistent fever, hemoglobin level, total bilirubin, urea nitrogen and P. vivax infection in patients with malaria may be useful to classify in a timely and objective manner subjects who may develop complications(AU)

Introducción. Toxoplasma gondii es un parásito con gran potencial zoonótico que puede infectar un amplio rango de huéspedes de sangre caliente, incluidos los animales del sector pecuario, lo que causa pérdidas a la industria. En el humano, es patógeno en personas inmunosuprimidas y afecta el desarrollo del feto en infecciones congénitas. Además, se asocia con diversos trastornos del comportamiento en personas sanas. El humano puede adquirir T. gondii al consumir carnes contaminadas mal cocidas. Objetivo. Determinar la positividad de T. gondii en carnes de consumo humano (res, pollo y cerdo) en Ibagué, Colombia. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizó la PCR convencional anidada y la secuencia del gen B1 de T. gondii como blanco de amplificación. Se tomaron 186 muestras de carne comercializada en la zona urbana de Ibagué (62 de res, 62 de pollo y 62 de cerdo) y se obtuvo el porcentaje de positividad en cada tipo de carne evaluada. Resultados. Se encontró un porcentaje de positividad de 18,8 % en las muestras, siendo la carne de cerdo la del mayor porcentaje (22,5 %; 14/62), seguida por las muestras de carne de res (19,3 %; 12/62) y de pollo (14,5 %; 9/62). Los mejores productos amplificados fueron secuenciados en Macrogen, y alineados con las secuencias del gen B1 depositadas en el GenBank, con lo que se confirmó su identidad. Conclusiones. Este es el primer estudio sobre prevalencia de T. gondii en carnes para consumo humano en Ibagué y el departamento del Tolima. Se demostró que los tres tipos de carne representan un riesgo para la infección en humanos a nivel local.
Introduction: Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite with great zoonotic potential. It can infect a broad range of warm-blooded hosts (including livestock) and causes significant losses in the industry. In humans, it has been described as a pathogen in immunosuppressed people, it affects the fetus development in congenital infections, and is associated with various behavioral disorders in healthy people. Humans can acquire T. gondii by consuming undercooked, contaminated meat. Objective: To determine T. gondii positivity (currently unknown) in meat for human consumption (i.e., beef, chicken, and pork) in the city of Ibague, Colombia. Materials and methods: We used conventional nested PCR and the T. gondii B1 gene sequence as amplification target. We collected samples of meat (N=186) sold in the urban area of Ibagué (62 beef, 62 chicken, and 62 pork samples) and determined the T. gondii positivity percentage for each type of meat. Results: The study found an average of 18.8% positivity for all meat samples, pork having the highest percentage (22.5%; 14/62), followed by beef (19.3%; 12/62) and chicken (14.5%; 9/62). The best-amplified products were sequenced by macrogen and aligned with the B1 gene sequences in GenBank, thereby confirming their identity. Conclusions: This is the first study of T. gondii prevalence in meat for human consumption carried out in the city of Ibagué and the department of Tolima. All three types of meat sampled represent a risk for local human infection.

We have previously synthesized and characterized the chrysin coordination complex with the oxidovanadium(IV) cation (VIVO(chrys)2) and characterized in ethanolic solution and in solid state. Because suitable single crystals for X-ray diffraction determinations could not be obtained, in the present work, we elucidate the geometrical parameters of this complex by computational methodologies. The optimization and vibrational investigation were carried out both in ethanolic solution and in gas phase. The computational results support the experimentally proposed geometries of the VIVO(chrys)2 complex, thus leading to the conclusion that the complex exists as conformers with trans-octahedral geometry in ethanolic solution and as conformers with cis-octahedral geometry in the solid state. The complex also exists as conformers with trans-octahedral geometry in aqueous media. The active species formed after dissolution in DMSO showed anticancer and antimetastatic behavior in human lung cell line A549 with moderate binding (Kaca. 105 M-1) to bovine serum albumin (BSA). The interaction through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces resulted in a spontaneous process. Site marker competitive experiments showed binding sites for chrysin mainly located in site II (subdomain IIIA) and in site I (subdomain IIIA) for the complex. FT-IR spectral measurements showed evidences of the alterations of protein secondary structure in the presence of chrysin and VIVO(chrys)2.
