ABSTRACT

Background  Foot ulcer is a common complication of poorly controlled diabetes and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The current standard of treatment for diabetic foot ulcers includes the management of underlying risk factors, wound debridement, use of antibiotics for infection, off-loading with cast, and revascularisation surgery. The glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) patch is currently off-licence in treating PVD or diabetic foot ulcers. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the GTN patch in preventing amputation, improving pain control, and reducing the size of tissue loss (ulcer/gangrene) or localised ischaemic area. Method This is a pilot study of 30 patients who were started on the GTN patch from February 2020 to October 2021. Inclusion criteria were patients who have critical limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) and with no viable options or are at high risk for revascularisation, both endovascular and open surgery. Patients who were on a GTN patch for less than six weeks at the time of data collection or had unclear outcomes were excluded. The outcomes were retrospectively collected on prevention of amputation, improvement in pain control, and reduction in tissue loss (the size of ulcer/gangrene) or localised ischaemic area with the use of a GTN patch. The binomial test was used to compare the observed outcome of the GTN patch and the expected outcome, which was assumed to be 50% in this study. Results  Ninety-three per cent (93%) of the patients who had GTN patches successfully avoided amputation (p<0.0001). Eighty-four per cent (84%) of patients reported better pain control (p=0.0022) and improvement in the size of ulcer/gangrene/localised ischaemic areas (p=0.0005). Conclusion The GTN patch is effective in preventing amputation, improving pain control, and reducing the size of ulcer/gangrene/localised ischaemic areas in patients who have end-stage CLTI and no viable options or who are at high risk for revascularisation surgery.

ABSTRACT

Background: Emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) in Bangladesh focusses on maternal health, whereby it addresses childbirth and postpartum complications to ensure women's health and well-being. It was transitioned to a digital platform to overcome challenges with the paper-based EmONC register and we conducted implementation research to assess the outcome. Here we outline the stakeholder engagement process integral to the implementation research process. Methods: We adopted a four-step stakeholder engagement model based on the identification, sensitisation, involvement, and engagement of stakeholders. The approach was informed by previous experience, desk reviews, and expert consultations to ensure comprehensive engagement with stakeholders at multiple levels. Led by the Maternal Health Programme of the Government of Bangladesh, we involved high-power and high-interest stakeholders in developing a joint action plan for digitisation of the paper-based EmONC register. Finally, we demonstrated this digital EmONC register in real-life settings to stakeholders at different levels. Results: The successful demonstration process fostered government ownership and collaboration with multiple stakeholders, while laying the foundation for scalability and sustainability. Nevertheless, our experience highlighted that the stakeholder engagement process is context-driven, time-consuming, resource-intensive, iterative, and dynamic, and it requires involving stakeholders with varied expertise. Effective strategic planning, facilitation, and the allocation of sufficient time and resources are essential components for successful stakeholder engagement. Conclusions: Our experience demonstrates the potential of adopting the 'identification, sensitisation, involvement, and engagement' stakeholder engagement model. Success in implementing this model in diverse settings depends on leveraging knowledge gained during implementation, maintaining robust communication with stakeholders, and harnessing the patience and determination of the facilitating organisation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The experiment evaluated how Aloe vera gel (AVG) extract supplementation affected immune responses and physiological performances in broiler chickens. Materials and Methods: 90-day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were reared for 38 days without the addition of antibiotics, either through feed or water. At 10 days, chicks were allocated into three groups: A, B, and C (n = 30). Group A served as non-supplemented control. Groups B and C were administered aqueous extracts of AVG at 1.0% and 2.0%, respectively, with drinking water. Results: The supplementation of AVG potentiated the chicken immune response to Newcastle disease-vaccinated birds and sheep red blood cell-treated birds, which detected the highest antibody titers against Newcastle disease virus and sRBC. The cellular immune response evaluated through a cutaneous basophilic hypersensitivity test using phytohemagglutinin-P demonstrated a significant increase in skin thickness in AVG-supplemented birds. The relative sizes of lymphoid organs (bursa, spleen, and thymus) were significantly enhanced (p < 0.05) among the groups. Broilers given AVG-1 and AVG-2 exhibited significantly greater (p < 0.01) live body weight, dressing percentages, and serum protein and serum albumin levels. The supplemented groups experienced a significant reduction in total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol values, while the levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol remained unchanged. The dietary aqueous extracts of AVG are effective in enhancing innate and specific immunity. Conclusion: This work strengthens the perspective of the use of AVG as an immune stimulant to facilitate recovery from immune suppression states, enhance innate and specific immunity, and improve broiler growth performance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The study was primarily conducted to assess the stakeholders' knowledge regarding the contamination caused by heavy metals in poultry feedstuffs. The concentration of some heavy metals (lead, chromium, cadmium, and nickel) and macro-minerals (sodium, potassium, and calcium) was also analyzed in poultry feeds collected from selected local markets in Sherpur district, Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: A well-structured questionnaire survey was used to investigate different stakeholders' perspectives in relation to metal contamination in feed. Heavy metals and calcium were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The flame emission spectrophotometric technique was applied to determine sodium and potassium. Results: The majority of the stakeholders (90%) were found to have no knowledge regarding heavy metal contamination. Lead and nickel concentrations were below the detectable level in the collected samples. The average concentration of chromium in Jhenaigati upazila was four times higher than in Nalitabari upazila, at 21.806 mg kg-1 and 5.452 mg kg-1, respectively. The concentrations of cadmium in both brand and nonbrand samples exceeded the maximum allowable limit set by the European Union at 1.329 mg kg-1 and 1.328 mg kg-1, respectively. Sodium, potassium, and calcium were found in the ranges of 0.0011%-0.0035%, 0.0010%-0.0013%, and 0.0080%-0.0305%, which were extremely low in concentration compared to the minimum requirement in poultry feed. Conclusion: Regular surveillance and governance systems should be incorporated into national policy to cease the hazardous impacts of heavy metals through feed contamination. From a nutritional viewpoint, poultry feeds need to be critically formulated.

Introduction Failure of infrainguinal bypass grafts remains a major problem tackled by vascular surgeons despite a meticulous surgical technique. All infrainguinal bypasses should go under routine surveillance to pick the grafts at risk for the prevention of graft failure. Objectives The aim was to find out if we were adhering to the European Society of Vascular Surgery (ESVS) guidelines in the management of chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) patients, including postoperative follow-up and to monitor whether the patients were having postoperative duplex surveillance scans to pick any graft at risk. Methods All patients who underwent infra-inguinal bypass procedures for CLTI during the last eight months (from mid-January to mid-September 2023) in our vascular unit were included. Retrospective data were collected. Results A total of 38 patients had lower limb bypass procedures over the last eight months (from 15 January till 14 September 2023). However, two femoral-femoral (fem-fem) crossovers, one Ilio-popliteal, and one pedal bypass were excluded. Thus, a total of 36 patients were included in the study (n=34). The vast majority (n=27, 79.4%) had femoro popliteal bypass anastomosing distally to above knee (AK) or below knee (BK) popliteal artery, and the rest (n=7, 20.5%) had distal bypass (fem-distal or pop-distal bypass). Moreover, 18% of patients had amputation, 15% of patients died, and 61% of the remaining patients were on surveillance. Of those, who were not on surveillance, 44% of them had graft occlusion. Conclusion Surveillance can predict graft at risk, and the graft occlusion can be prevented by appropriate intervention. Every vascular unit should have its own post-procedural follow-up strategies.

ABSTRACT

Several environmental pollutants, mostly chemicals and plasticizers, have an effect on the reproduction of small ruminants, causing abortion, delayed estrus, and decreased fertility. Phthalates are common in our environment and have been identified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The research work investigated the impact of dietary exposure to a phthalate mixture on physical and hemato-biochemical parameters in pregnant Black Bengal (BB) goats. A total of 20 clinically healthy, 1-2 months pregnant, aged 6-8 months with a body weight of 10-12 kg BB goats were collected and divided into two (n = 10) groups. The treatment group received a standard goat ration with a combination of different phthalates mixture while the control group was provided the same ration with the vehicle of aphthalatemixture until parturition. The physical parameters were measured with appropriate tools and blood samples were collected for hemato-biochemical tests. The results showed that the physiological parameters (body condition score, respiration rate and heart rate) were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in phthalate-exposed goats without altering rectal temperature and rumen motility. The hematological parameters: RBC count, WBC count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit values and RBC indices were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in phthalate-exposed goats. Phthalate-exposed BB goats had significantly (P < 0.05) higher neutrophil and lower lymphocyte counts. Serum glucose, total protein, albumin and total cholesterol levels were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in phthalate-exposed BB goats but higher the values of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in treated BB goats. It may be concluded that exposure to a phthalate mixture during pregnancy alters the physical, hematological and biochemical parameters in BB goats.

BACKGROUND: Sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS) is a severe neurodegenerative disease characterized by continuous diminution of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Earlier studies indicated that the DPP6 gene variant has a role in the development of sALS. This meta-analysis was designed to uncover the role of rs10260404 polymorphism of the DPP6 gene and its association with sALS. METHODS: All case-control articles published prior to October 2022 on the association between DPP6 (rs10260404) polymorphism and sALS risk were systematically extracted from different databases which include PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar. Overall odds ratios (ORs) and "95% confidence intervals (CIs)" were summarized for various genetic models. Subgroup and heterogeneity assessments were performed. Egger's and "Begg's tests were applied to evaluate publication bias. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) and false-positive report probability (FPRP) were performed. RESULTS: Nine case-control studies containing 4202 sALS cases and 4444 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis. A significant association of the DPP6 (rs10260404) variant with an increased sALS risk in overall pooled subjects under allelic model [C allele vs. T allele, OR = 1.149, 95% CI (1.010-1.307), p-value = 0.035], dominant model [CC + CT vs. TT, OR = 1.165, 95% CI (1.067-1.273), p-value = 0.001], and homozygote comparison [CC vs. TT, OR = 1.421, 95% CI (1.003-2.011), p-value = 0.048] were observed. Moreover, in subgroup analysis by nationality, remarkable associations were detected in Dutch, Irish, American, and Swedish under allelic, dominant, and homozygote models. Additionally, stratification analysis by ethnicity exhibited an association with sALS risk among Caucasians and Americans under different genetic models. Interestingly, none of the models found any significant association with Asians. CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis indicates that DPP6 (rs10260404) polymorphism could be a candidate risk factor for sALS predisposition.

ABSTRACT

The biopolymer lignin, which is heterogeneous and abundant, is usually present in plant cell walls and gives them rigidity and strength. As a byproduct of the wood, paper, and pulp manufacturing industry, lignin ranks as the second most prevalent biopolymer worldwide, following cellulose. This review paper explores the extraction, modification, and prospective applications of lignin in various industries, including the enhancement of thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, biomedical applications such as vanillin production, fuel development, carbon fiber composites, and the creation of nanomaterials for food packaging and drug delivery. The structural characteristics of lignin remain undefined due to its origin, separation, and fragmentation processes. This comprehensive overview encompasses state-of-the-art techniques, potential applications, diverse extraction methods, chemical modifications, carbon fiber utilization, and the extraction of vanillin. Moreover, the review focuses on the utilization of lignin-modified polymer blends across multiple manufacturing sectors, providing insights into the advantages and limitations of this innovative approach for the development of environmentally friendly materials.

Cadmium (Cd) is a pollutant that poses a health risk for humans and animals. Coral fossil (CF) acts as an adsorbent, yet limited knowledge is available on impacts of CF on Cd toxicities. The work was performed to figure out the effects of CF on hematobiochemical details and specific organs in Cd exposed broilers. The experiment was carried out with 45 broilers and were divided into three groups (15 in each). Group A was served as control. The birds in group B received Cd (75 mg /kg b. w.) orally. Whereas group C was orally supplemented with Cd (75 mg /kg b. w.) and CF (1 gm/kg b. w.). The trial was lasted for 30 days. For hematobiochemical analysis, blood samples were drawn, and sera were separated. Liver, kidney and muscle were collected to assess accumulation concentration. Brain, liver and kidney samples were also collected for histopathological study. The results showed that hematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and DLC) were altered by Cd but restored with CF supplementation. Liver (AST, ALT and ALP) and kidney (total protein and creatinine) biomarkers were increased significantly in Cd treated broilers while decreased significantly after CF supplementation. CF reduced accumulation concentration of Cd in liver, kidney and muscle. Cd intoxicated broilers showed degenerative changes in brain, hyperplastic bile duct and proliferation of renal tubular epithelium with focal degeneration and necrosis; and these were improved after CF supplementation. Therefore, it can be concluded that CF is a potential adsorbent against Cd toxicities.

Titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXenes have been regarded as important functional fillers of organic coatings for anticorrosion. Various MXene-based composite coatings have been fabricated and investigated via a material modification strategy, enhancing the corrosion protection performance. However, the anticorrosion reliabilities of MXene-based composite coatings were thwarted by their disordered interfaces. Significantly, few reports discuss the influence of interface structures on the protection performance for the coatings. In this work, we confirm the exceptional anticorrosion performance of ordered MXene/epoxy composite (OMC) coatings via a reasonable interface strategy. The ordered interfacial structure can synergistically enhance the coating compactness while maximizing the infiltration paths of aggressive species. The obtained OMC coating is compact and shows a high impedance of 6.84 × 109 Ohm cm2, a high coating resistance of 6.08 × 109 Ohm cm2, an extremely low porosity of 0.77% and an extremely low breakpoint frequency of 0.18 Hz, at a low filler content of 0.5 wt%. Besides, the concept of specific impedance (SZ) is proposed to attest the superiority of the OMC coating. Furthermore, the galvanic corrosion effects of MXenes in epoxy coatings are systematically explored and confirmed for the first time. The highly ordered structure eliminates the corrosion promotion activity of the conductive MXene, and thus, endows the superior anticorrosion stability for the coating. This work provides an inspiration for constructing outstanding long-term MXene-based anticorrosion coatings via regulating the coating interface.

Estrogens are a group of hormones that have diverse effects on both reproductive and non-reproductive organs. Conjugated estrogens are medicine that contains a mixture of estrogen hormones. The study was conducted to observe the effects of varying doses of conjugated estrogen on body weight, hormonal and histological alterations of reproductive organs in adult swiss albino female mice. In this study, 60 female swiss albino mice (Mus musculus) aged 28-30 days with an average body weight of 28.2 ± 1 g were used. At first, the mice were randomly divided into 4 groups each containing 15 mice. Group A was served as vehicle control and fed on standard mice pellet and fresh drinking water. While, groups B, C and D were administered with conjugated estrogen orally at the daily dose rate of 125 µg, 250 µg and 500 µg/kg body weight respectively with 1 mL sesame oil as a vehicle by mixing with feed. The experiment was carried out for 90 days. After humanly euthanized, blood was collected and serum was prepared and organs were collected for histopathology. The results revealed that higher doses of conjugated estrogen resulted in weight loss in premenopausal female mice compared to lower doses. Serum estrogen and thyroxine concentration was increased significantly following the doses of conjugated estrogen. Ovarian histotexture showed congested blood vessels and cystic space with degeneration of follicles and corpus luteum. Uterine lesions included massive macrophage infiltration in endometrium and hyperplasia of glandular epithelium at a lower dose; hyperplasia and hypertrophy of glandular epithelium (pleomorphism) with normal macrophage infiltration in endometrium at a higher dose. Therefore, it can be concluded that oral conjugated estrogen therapy at high dose has more detrimental impacts on body weight and reproductive function compared to lower dose in female adult mice.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: The associations between the number of COVID-19 cases/deaths and subsequent uptake of protective behaviors may reflect cognitive and behavioral responses to threat-relevant information. OBJECTIVE: Applying protection motivation theory (PMT), this study explored whether the number of total COVID-19 cases/deaths and general anxiety were associated with cross-situational handwashing adherence and whether these associations were mediated by PMT-specific self-regulatory cognitions (threat appraisal: perceived vulnerability, perceived illness severity; coping appraisal: self-efficacy, response efficacy, response costs). METHOD: The study (#NCT04367337) was conducted in March-September 2020 among 1256 adults residing in 14 countries. Self-reports on baseline general anxiety levels, handwashing adherence across 12 situations, and PMT-related constructs were collected using an online survey at two points in time, four weeks apart. Values of COVID-19 cases and deaths were retrieved twice for each country (one week prior to the individual data collection). RESULTS: Across countries and time, levels of adherence to handwashing guidelines were high. Path analysis indicated that smaller numbers of COVID-19 cases/deaths (Time 0; T0) were related to stronger self-efficacy (T1), which in turn was associated with higher handwashing adherence (T3). Lower general anxiety (T1) was related to better adherence (T3), with this effect mediated by higher response efficacy (T1, T3) and lower response cost (T3). However, higher general anxiety (T1) was related to better adherence via higher illness severity (T1, T3). General anxiety was unrelated to COVID-19 indicators. CONCLUSIONS: We found a complex pattern of associations between the numbers of COVID-19 cases/deaths, general anxiety, PMT variables, and handwashing adherence at the early stages of the pandemic. Higher general anxiety may enable threat appraisal (perceived illness severity), but it may hinder coping appraisal (response efficacy and response costs). The indicators of the trajectory of the pandemic (i.e., the smaller number of COVID-19 cases) may be indirectly associated with higher handwashing adherence via stronger self-efficacy.

Most recently, monkeypox virus (MPXV) has emanated as a global public health threat. Unavailability of effective medicament against MPXV escalates demand for new therapeutic agent. In this study, in silico strategies were conducted to identify novel drug against the A36R protein of MPXV. The A36R protein of MPXV is responsible for the viral migration, adhesion, and vesicle trafficking to the host cell. To block the A36R protein, 4893 potential antiviral peptides (AVPs) were retrieved from DRAMP and SATPdb databases. Finally, 57 sequences were screened based on peptide filtering criteria, which were then modeled. Likewise, 31 monkeypox virus A36R protein sequences were collected from NCBI protein database to find consensus sequence and to predict 3D protein model. The refined and validated models of the A36R protein and AVP peptides were used to predict receptor-ligand interactions using DINC 2 server. Three peptides that showed best interactions were SATPdb10193, SATPdb21850, and SATPdb26811 with binding energies -6.10, -6.10, and -6.30 kcal/mol, respectively. Small molecules from drug databases were also used to perform virtual screening against the A36R protein. Among databases, Enamine-HTSC showed strong affinity with docking scores ranging from -8.8 to 9.8 kcal/mol. Interaction of target protein A36R with the top 3 peptides and the most probable drug (Z55287118) examined by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. Trajectory analyses (RMSD, RMSF, SASA, and Rg) confirmed the stable nature of protein-ligand and protein-peptide complexes. This work suggests that identified top AVPs and small molecules might interfere with the function of the A36R protein of MPXV.

In this paper, we investigate the temperature sensitivity of gain and breakdown voltage of detectors based on cycling excitation process (CEP), an internal signal amplification mechanism found in amorphous silicon (a-Si). Changes in gain and breakdown voltage with temperature can result in pixel-to-pixel signal variation in a focal plane array and variations in photon detection efficiency for single photon detectors. We have demonstrated athermalized CEP detectors with their gain and breakdown voltage being nearly temperature independent from 200 K to 350 K, covering the temperature range for practical applications. The device appears to be more thermally stable than avalanche photodetectors (APDs) with different gain media such as Si, InP, InAlAs, etc. The excellent thermal stability of CEP detectors is attributed to the field-enhanced tunneling process for excitation of localized carriers into the mobile bands, which dominates over the phonon excitation process.

ABSTRACT

A butter-enriched high-fat diet changes lipid metabolism, resulting in fat storage, hyperlipidemia and obesity. Effects of cinnamon powder were investigated in butter-fed mice. 40 Swiss Albino mice, aged 28 to 30 days, were randomly assigned into two groups. Group A was an untreated control group (n = 8) and another group (n = 32) was a butter-treated group fed 10% butter. In the fifth week, mice of the butter-fed group were further divided into four equal groups: B, C, D, and E (n = 8), fed 10% butter with cinnamon 200 mg, 400 mg, and 600 mg powder per liter drinking water, respectively for 10 weeks. The butter-fed group was gained the most weight. Cinnamon supplementation significantly normalized weight gain and had no harmful effects on hematological parameters. Butter supplementation significantly increased total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol (LDL-c) whereas, cinnamon powder significantly reduced TC, LDL-c and glucose levels. In butter-fed mice, a significant increase was observed in the liver enzymes, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels with subsequent fat deposition in the liver. Excitingly, these enzymes were decreased and no fat depositions were observed in the liver of cinnamon-treated mice. Applying different concentrations of cinnamon powder improved the lipid profile in butter-fed female albino mice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vitamin E and black seed oil are two powerful antioxidants with several health benefits. OBJECTIVE: The effect of vitamin E and black seed oil on reproductive performance of Swiss albino mice was studied. METHODS: A total of 80 (40 male and 40 female) mice of 25-28 days old were randomly divided into four groups viz., A, B, C and D consisting of 10 mice in each group. Mice from the group A served as vehicle control and received normal mice ration whereas mice from the group B, C and D received feed supplemented with either black seed oil (0.5 ml/kg), vitamin E (200 mg/kg) or combination of black seed oil (0.5 ml/kg) and vitamin E (200 mg/kg), respectively daily for 16 weeks. At the end point of the study, blood samples were collected and sera were separated for hormonal analysis. At the same time, mice were sacrificed and testes and ovaries were collected for histomorphological examination. RESULTS: In male mice, the level of testosterone increased significantly in mice receiving black seed oil only, whereas the thyroxin increased significantly in all treated groups when compared to the control mice. Histomorphological examination revealed a significant increase in the diameter of seminiferous tubules in male mice fed with either black seed oil or vitamin E or both. On the other hand, the oestradiol and thyroxin concentration in female mice showed no significant changes in both control and treated groups. However, ovaries of mice fed with black seed oil or vitamin E or both showed an increased number of the follicles of different stages than the control mice. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlighted the promoting action of vitamin E and black seed oil on reproductive functions of mice and that can be used to treat infertility in man and animals.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patterns of protective health behaviors, such as handwashing and sanitizing during the COVID-19 pandemic, may be predicted by macro-level variables, such as regulations specified by public health policies. Health behavior patterns may also be predicted by micro-level variables, such as self-regulatory cognitions specified by health behavior models, including the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). PURPOSE: This study explored whether strictness of containment and health policies was related to handwashing adherence and whether such associations were mediated by HAPA-specified self-regulatory cognitions. METHODS: The study (NCT04367337) was conducted among 1,256 adults from Australia, Canada, China, France, Gambia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, and Switzerland. Self-report data on cross-situational handwashing adherence were collected using an online survey at two time points, 4 weeks apart. Values of the index of strictness of containment and health policies, obtained from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker database, were retrieved twice for each country (1 week prior to individual data collection). RESULTS: Across countries and time, levels of handwashing adherence and strictness of policies were high. Path analysis indicated that stricter containment and health policies were indirectly related to lower handwashing adherence via lower self-efficacy and self-monitoring. Less strict policies were indirectly related to higher handwashing adherence via higher self-efficacy and self-monitoring. CONCLUSIONS: When policies are less strict, exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus might be higher, triggering more self-regulation and, consequently, more handwashing adherence. Very strict policies may need to be accompanied by enhanced information dissemination or psychosocial interventions to ensure appropriate levels of self-regulation.

ABSTRACT

Bisphenol-A (BPA) has become a great concern due to its toxic effects. The present study investigated the retrieval action of zinc (Zn) and folic acid (FA) supplementation against BPA-induced reproductive toxicities in male albino mice. A total of seventy-five 25-28 day-old mice were divided into five equal groups (group A-E, 15 mice in each group). The mice were given normal rations (control, group A) or administered with daily doses of BPA at 50 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) (group B-E). The mice from groups C, D and E were supplemented with Zn (10 mg/kg b.w.), FA (3 mg/kg b.w.) and both in the feed, respectively, daily for 12 weeks. Blood samples were collected, and the sera were separated for biochemical and hormonal analyses. The standard method was followed to test the sperm motility and sperm count. The testis samples were processed for a routine histopathological study using haematoxylin and eosin staining. The sperm counts, motility, and serum testosterone significantly declined in the BPA-exposed animals, but dramatically increased after the Zn and FA supplementation. There was significant degeneration of the seminiferous tubules in the testes of the BPA-exposed mice, which was recovered moderately by the Zn and FA supplementation. The study shows the retrieval action of zinc and folic acid in the restoration of normal reproductive function in bisphenol-A exposed male mice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's engagement in health behaviors, especially those that protect individuals from SARS-CoV-2 transmission, such as handwashing/sanitizing. This study investigated whether adherence to the World Health Organization's (WHO) handwashing guidelines (the outcome variable) was associated with the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic, as measured by the following 6 indicators: (i) the number of new cases of COVID-19 morbidity/mortality (a country-level mean calculated for the 14 days prior to data collection), (ii) total cases of COVID-19 morbidity/mortality accumulated since the onset of the pandemic, and (iii) changes in recent cases of COVID-19 morbidity/mortality (a difference between country-level COVID-19 morbidity/mortality in the previous 14 days compared to cases recorded 14-28 days earlier). METHODS: The observational study (#NCT04367337) enrolled 6064 adults residing in Australia, Canada, China, France, Gambia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, and Switzerland. Data on handwashing adherence across 8 situations (indicated in the WHO guidelines) were collected via an online survey (March-July 2020). Individual-level handwashing data were matched with the date- and country-specific values of the 6 indices of the trajectory of COVID-19 pandemic, obtained from the WHO daily reports. RESULTS: Multilevel regression models indicated a negative association between both accumulation of the total cases of COVID-19 morbidity (B = -.041, SE = .013, p = .013) and mortality (B = -.036, SE = .014 p = .002) and handwashing. Higher levels of total COVID-related morbidity and mortality were related to lower handwashing adherence. However, increases in recent cases of COVID-19 morbidity (B = .014, SE = .007, p = .035) and mortality (B = .022, SE = .009, p = .015) were associated with higher levels of handwashing adherence. Analyses controlled for participants' COVID-19-related situation (their exposure to information about handwashing, being a healthcare professional), sociodemographic characteristics (gender, age, marital status), and country-level variables (strictness of containment and health policies, human development index). The models explained 14-20% of the variance in handwashing adherence. CONCLUSIONS: To better explain levels of protective behaviors such as handwashing, future research should account for indicators of the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ionic liquids (ILs) can play a vital role in clay swelling inhibition during hydraulic fracturing. Previous studies highlighted the effect of side-chain length attached to the cationic core and different anions possessing almost the same chemical properties on inhibition performance. However, polyatomic anions have the potential to superiorly inhibit swelling compared to monoatomic anions. In this study, three ILs, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6), were utilized to assess the effects of polyatomic anions on clay swelling inhibition. These performances were compared with the performances of a conventional inhibitor, potassium chloride (KCl). X-ray diffraction (XRD) testing was applied to check the mineral components present in the bentonite clay sample studied in this research. Clay swelling inhibition performance and rheological properties of these ILs were evaluated by the bentonite plate soaking test, linear swelling test, and rheological test. The swelling inhibition mechanisms were investigated through ζ-potential measurement, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. Moreover, COSMO-RS computer simulation was conducted to explain the inhibition mechanisms theoretically. The results demonstrated that BMIMPF6 showed superior inhibition performance and reduced the swelling by 21.55%, while only 9.26% reduction was attained by potassium chloride (KCl). The adsorption ability on the bentonite surface through electrostatic attraction, higher activity coefficient, and less electronegativity of PF6 - anion played a vital role in attaining such superior inhibition performance by BMIMPF6.
