ABSTRACT

In the epi-cadmium neutron induced fission of 235U, independent isomeric yield ratios (IR) of fission products 130,132Sb, 131,133Te, 134,136I, 135Xe and 138Cs have been measured by using an off-line gamma-ray spectrometric technique. The average neutron energy of the epi-cadmium reactor neutron spectrum is 1.9 MeV. From the IR values, the root mean square fragment angular momenta (JRMS) were deduced by using spin dependent statistical model analysis. The IR and JRMS values of considered fission products in the epi-cadmium neutron induced fission of 235U were compared with the literature data in the thermal neutron induced fission of 235U to examine the influence of excitation energy on nuclear structure effect.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at optimizing process protocols for development of low glycemic index (GI) rice flour (LGIRF) by employing enzymatic hydrolysis method using central composite rotatable design (CCRD). LGIRF was evaluated for pasting, farinographic, spectroscopic and microbiological attributes. Independent variables for optimization included concentrations of α-amylase (0.02-0.12 %), glucoamylase (0.02-0.24 %), as well as the incubation temperature (55-80°C). Resistant starch (RS), glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) were investigated as response variables. The optimum conditions for development of LGIRF with better quality were- α-amylase concentration of 0.040 %, glucoamylase concentration of 0.070 % and an incubation temperature of 60 °C. The results of mineral analysis revealed significantly (p < 0.05) lower levels of boron, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese in LGIRF, while iron and copper were significantly higher. The viscosity profile as evident from pasting profile and farinographic characteristics of LGIRF were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than native rice flour. 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies showed an increase in flexible starch segments and a decrease in amorphous portion of starch LGIRF, along with chemical shift alterations in carbons 1 and 4. Free fatty acids and total plate count were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in LGIRF although was within limits.

ABSTRACT

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a relatively common and highly morbid inflammatory skin disease. Due to our relatively limited understanding of HS's pathogenesis, there are currently insufficient treatment options available, and many patients' medical needs are not being met. This is partly due to a scarcity of ex vivo human assays and animal models that accurately recapitulate the disease. To address this deficit, we have developed a whole-tissue explant model of HS to examine its pathogenic mechanisms and the efficacy of potential treatments within intact human tissue. We measured cytokine protein and RNA within whole tissue maintained in an agar-media solution, finding that IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations trended upwards in both HS explants and healthy controls, while IL-17A, IL-1ß, and TNF-α exhibited increases in HS tissue alone. We also show that the explants were responsive to treatment with both dexamethasone and IL-2. Not only do our results show that this model effectively delivers treatments throughout the explants, but they also elucidate which cytokines are related to the explant process regardless of tissue state and which are related to HS tissue specifically, laying the groundwork for future implementations of this model.

ABSTRACT

For the first time, charge distribution studies have been carried out in the epi-cadmium neutron induced fission of 235U by measuring the fractional cumulative yields (FCY) and independent yields (IY) of various fission products. An off-line γ-ray spectrometric technique was used for the measurements. The average energy of the epi-cadmium neutron spectrum is 1.9 MeV. From the FCY values, the isobaric width parameter (σZ), most probable charge (ZP) and the charge polarization (ΔΖEXPT) as a function of fragment mass were obtained. Similarly, from the IY values, isotopic width parameter (σA), the most probable mass (AP) and the elemental yields (YZ) of Sn, Sb, Te, I, Xe, Cs, Ba, La, Ce and Pr were determined by using a non-linear fit. From the YZ values, the proton even-odd effect (δp) was obtained for the first time. The present data in the 235U(n, f) reaction were compared with the similar data in the 235U(nth, f) and 238U(n, f) reactions as well as of other actinides to examine the role of excitation energy and pairing effect.

ABSTRACT

The study aimed at evaluating the influence of water-chestnut starch-based coatings loaded with rosemary essential oil (REO) at concentrations of 0.10%, 0.25% and 0.50% (w/v) on postharvest cold storage stability of apple var. Golden delicious for 120 days. Average droplet diameter of nanoemulsions was in range of 315-450 nm and it increased with increase in the REO concentration. Minimum weight loss was observed in fruits treated with coating material containing 0.50% REO. Samples coated with starch+0.50% REO exhibited highest firmness value of 68.22 ± 1.02 N under controlled atmosphere storage (CAS). Anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were retained in all samples coated with formulated emulsion. Antifungal assay against Pencillium expansum indicated that 0.50% REO had maximum antifungal activity. Increase in REO concentration from 0.10 to 0.50% in starch coating formulations resulted in reduced lesion diameter in coated samples under both the storage conditions. Lesion diameter (LD) was found highest in control (39.40 ± 0.20 mm) under ambient conditions. Coated fruit samples showed a significant (p≤0.05) reduction in LD under both the ambient and CAS conditions however, more pronounced effect was reported under CAS. Fruits coated with edible coatings enriched with different REO concentrations under CAS exhibited significantly (p≤0.05) lower chilling injury index (ST+0.50%REO < ST+0.25%REO<0.10%REO) compared to control.

ABSTRACT

Activation and off-line γ-ray spectrometric methods were used to measure the ground and isomeric state (n,2n) reaction cross section for 103Rh at two different neutron energies. The standard 27Al (n,α)24Na reference reaction was used to normalise neutron flux. The proton beam from the 14UD BARC-TIFR Pelletron facility in Mumbai, India, was utilised to create high-energy quasi-monoenergetic neutrons via the 7Li (p,n) reaction. Statistical model calculations including the level density, pre-equilibrium and optical potential model were performed using the TALYS (ver. 1.95) and EMPIRE (ver. 3.2.3) reaction codes. In addition, because of considerable discrepancies in measured data, the literature (n,p) reaction cross section of 52Cr and 48Ti targets were examined theoretically in the present work. The measured cross sections are discussed and compared with the latest evaluated data of the FENDL-3.2b, CENDL-3.2, TENDL-2019, JENDL-5.0, and ENDF/B-VIII.0 libraries, and experimental data based on the EXFOR compilation. The theoretical investigation of the (n,2n) reaction cross section was performed for the ground and isomeric state for the first time from reaction threshold to 25 MeV energies. The experimental data corresponding to the ground, isomeric state and isomeric ratio were reproduced consistently by the theoretical calculations. The present experimental results are good with certain literature data and theoretical values.

ABSTRACT

NixMg1-xFe2O4(x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) nanoparticles were symphonized via combustion with microwave assistance in the presence of Tamarindus indica seeds extract as fuel. Nanoparticles nature, size, morphology, oxidation state, elemental composition, and optical and luminescence properties were analysed using PXRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, and HRTEM with SAED, XPS, UV-Visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. PXRD analysis confirms that synthesized nanoparticles are spinel cubic and have a 17-18 nm average crystalline size. Tetrahedral and octahedral sites regarding stretching vibrations were confirmed by FTIR analysis. SEM and HRTEM data it is disclosed that the morphology of synthesized nanoparticles has nano flakes-like structure with sponge-like agglomeration. Elemental compositions of prepared nanoparticles were confirmed through EDX spectroscopy. XPS Spectroscopy confirmed and revealed transition, oxidation states, and elemental composition. The band gap and absorption phenomenon were disclosed using UV-visible spectroscopy, where the band gap declines (2.1, 2, 1.6, 1.8 eV), with increase in nickel NixMg1-xFe2O4(x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) doping. Photoluminescence intensity reduces with an incline in nickel doping, was confirmed and disclosed using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Dyes (Methylene blue and Rhodamine B) degradation activity was performed in the presence of NDMF nanoparticles as a photocatalyst, which disclosed that 98.1% of MB dye and 97.9% of RB dye were degraded in 0-120 min. Regarding initial dye concentration and catalyst load, 5 ppm was initiated as the ideal initial concentration for both RB and MB dyes. 50 mg catalyst dosage was found to be most effective for the degradation of MB and RB dyes. In comparison, pH studies revealed that photodegradation efficiency was higher in neutral (MB-98.1%, RB-97.9%) and basic (MB-99.6%, RB-99.3%) conditions than in acidic (MB-61.8%, RB-60.4%) conditions.

ABSTRACT

The activation cross-sections of 93Nb(n,2n)92Nbm and 88Sr(n,2n)87Srm reactions were measured using the activation and off-line γ-ray spectrometry technique in the neutron energy range 13.97-20.02 MeV. The present measurements have been done at the neutron energies where there are deficiencies and scarcity in the reaction cross-section data. The neutron flux was determined using the 27Al(n,α)24Na monitor reaction. The γ-ray self-attenuation effect and the low energy background neutron corrections were done in this experiment. The results of the present work were compared with the previously published data and evaluated nuclear data libraries. Theoretically, the cross-section for 93Nb(n,2n)92Nbm and 88Sr(n,2n)87Srm reactions was predicted by TALYS-1.9 nuclear code and compared with the present results.

Eight commonly cultivated and consumed rice varieties of Northern Himalayan regions and a popular high amylose rice variety were characterized at Wx locus and evaluated for resistant starch (RS), in-vitro starch digestibility, predicted glycemic index (pGI), glycemic load (GL) and textural parameters. Cytosine and thymine repeats (CT)n at waxy locus (Wx) showed high association with apparent amylose content (AAC). Both pGI and GL varied substantially within the selected varieties. The pGI was relatively lower in high and intermediate amylose Indica varieties compared to low amylose Japonica ones. However, Koshikari despite being a low amylose variety showed relatively lower pGI and GL, due to its higher RS, dietary fiber, protein and fat content. It was thus presumed that in addition to AAC, RS and other grain components also affect the glycemic response. Inherent resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis was also found to be higher in firm textured and less sticky rice varieties. The genotypes-Lalat, Basmati-1509 and Koshikari, in view of their low to moderate pGI and relatively higher RS content, can be explored in future breeding programmes to develop rice varieties whose consumption will help to prevent hyper/hypo glycemic responses in Northern Himalayan regions, where daily staple diet is rice.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a severe painful photodermatosis, experience prodromal sensations when exposed to sunlight, which are the "warning signals" to exit the sun, as prolonged exposure causes an excruciatingly painful phototoxic attack. The unique prodromal cutaneous sensations are reversible and differ from the severe burning pain attack lasting 2-7 days. Previously, afamelanotide treatment was studied using time to pain or time outside as primary outcome measures. Since patients have an ingrained fear of sunlight, these measures did not capture the full treatment effect. We retrospectively characterized and evaluated time to prodrome (TTP) as a safer, patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure in afamelanotide-treated patients. METHODS: Structured interviews recorded TTP before and during afamelanotide treatment in retrospective US and Dutch cohort studies. RESULTS: Thirty-one US and 58 Dutch EPP patients participated. Before afamelanotide treatment, 54.8% US and 39.7% Dutch patients reported TTP onset <10 minutes in direct sunlight. In both studies, patients' TTP's were significantly longer during afamelanotide treatment (p < 0.0001). All US patients' TTP increased; no TTP was <10 minutes. Among Dutch patients 81% improved; only 10.3% reported TTPs < 10 minutes. CONCLUSION: EPP patients reported substantial improvements in TTP during afamelanotide treatment. TTP could provide a safer, PRO-based efficacy endpoint for assessing future EPP treatments.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated physicochemical, glycemic index, pasting and microstructural properties of low glycemic index rice flour (LGIRF) stored in two different packaging materials (low density polyethylene-LDPE and metalized polyester-Met-PE) under accelerated storage conditions (38 ± 2 °C and 90-92% RH) for three months. The different properties were evaluated after every one month. Protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate content decreased slightly while, water activity, moisture and ash of both control and LGIRF increased significantly with storage (P < 0.05). Total starch, in vitro glycemic index and glycemic load were higher in control and decreased during storage (P < 0.05). However, resistant starch, total sugars, reducing sugars and degree of sweetness in LGIRF exhibited higher, although non-significant variation relative to control during storage. Pasting properties revealed that peak and breakdown viscosities decreased while final and setback viscosities increased during storage (P < 0.05) however holding viscosity and pasting temperature exhibited non-significant variation (P > 0.05). Further, all pasting properties were significantly higher in control except pasting temperature (P < 0.05). All farinographic properties exhibited non-significant difference during storage and were significantly higher in control. Overall, while comparing LDPE and MeT-PE samples non-significant variation was observed in all properties. Microstructural studies showed that integrity of starch granules in LGIRF samples were least altered during storage.
