Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), also referred to as Graves' ophthalmopathy, is a medical condition wherein ocular complications arise due to autoimmune thyroid illness. The diagnosis of TAO, reliant on imaging, typical ocular symptoms, and abnormalities in thyroid function or thyroid-associated antibodies, is generally graded and staged. In recent years, Artificial intelligence(AI), particularly deep learning(DL) technology, has gained widespread use in the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases. This paper presents a discussion on specific studies involving AI, specifically DL, in the context of TAO, highlighting their applications in TAO diagnosis, staging, grading, and treatment decisions. Additionally, it addresses certain limitations in AI research on TAO and potential future directions for the field.

Purpose: Early gastrointestinal tumors can be removed by endoscopic procedures. Endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD) requires submucosal fluid injection to provide mucosal elevation and prevent intraoperative perforation. However, the clinically applied normal saline mucosal elevation height is low for a short time, which often requires multiple intraoperative injections that increase the inconvenience and procedure time. In addition, recently researched submucosal injection materials (SIM) suffer from complex preparation, poor economy, and poor biocompatibility. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a new type of SIM that can provide long, safe and effective mucosal elevation in support of the endoscopic procedures. Methods: The FS hydrogel is based on polyethylene-polypropylene glycol (F-127) mixed with sodium alginate (SA). The different physicochemical properties of FS hydrogels were characterized through various experiments. Afterward, various biosafety assessments were carried out. Finally, the performance of FS hydrogels was evaluated by in vitro submucosal injection and in vivo swine ESD. Results: The experimental results show that the FS hydrogel is liquid at room temperature, making it easy to inject, and when injected under the mucosa, it undergoes temperature-induced cross-linking, transforming from a liquid to a solid state to provide long-lasting mucosal augmentation. At the same time, the FS hydrogel exhibits controllable gelation, stability, and biocompatibility. The results of in vitro submucosal injections and in vivo ESD procedures showed that FS achieves high mucosal augmentation and provides good submucosal cushioning in the long term. Conclusion: In summary, the F-127/SA hydrogel is simple to synthesize, cost-effective, safe, easy to store, and able to assist ESD well from the perspective of practical clinical problems, indicating that the FS hydrogel can be an ideal potent submucosal injection substitution.

Background: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is the most prevalent autoimmune orbital condition, significantly impacting patients' appearance and quality of life. Early and accurate identification of active TAO along with timely treatment can enhance prognosis and reduce the occurrence of severe cases. Although the Clinical Activity Score (CAS) serves as an effective assessment system for TAO, it is susceptible to assessor experience bias. This study aimed to develop an ensemble deep learning system that combines anterior segment slit-lamp photographs of patients with facial images to simulate expert assessment of TAO. Method: The study included 156 patients with TAO who underwent detailed diagnosis and treatment at Shanxi Eye Hospital Affiliated to Shanxi Medical University from May 2020 to September 2023. Anterior segment slit-lamp photographs and facial images were used as different modalities and analyzed from multiple perspectives. Two ophthalmologists with more than 10 years of clinical experience independently determined the reference CAS for each image. An ensemble deep learning model based on the residual network was constructed under supervised learning to predict five key inflammatory signs (redness of the eyelids and conjunctiva, and swelling of the eyelids, conjunctiva, and caruncle or plica) associated with TAO, and to integrate these objective signs with two subjective symptoms (spontaneous retrobulbar pain and pain on attempted upward or downward gaze) in order to assess TAO activity. Results: The proposed model achieved 0.906 accuracy, 0.833 specificity, 0.906 precision, 0.906 recall, and 0.906 F1-score in active TAO diagnosis, demonstrating advanced performance in predicting CAS and TAO activity signs compared to conventional single-view unimodal approaches. The integration of multiple views and modalities, encompassing both anterior segment slit-lamp photographs and facial images, significantly improved the prediction accuracy of the model for TAO activity and CAS. Conclusion: The ensemble multi-view multimodal deep learning system developed in this study can more accurately assess the clinical activity of TAO than traditional methods that solely rely on facial images. This innovative approach is intended to enhance the efficiency of TAO activity assessment, providing a novel means for its comprehensive, early, and precise evaluation.

Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a rare congenital disorder with distinctive characteristics. Herein, we describe a KS patient carrying a novel mutation in the KMT2D gene, c.11785C > T (p.Gln3929*). The patient presented with typical eyelid deformities, including eversion of the lateral lower eyelids, long palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, and medial epicanthus. Orbital computed tomography revealed orbital bone malformation with temporally and inferiorly displaced zygomatic bone. The bilateral orbits were shallow with an enlarged angle between the lateral walls. Zygomatic and maxillary bone dysplasia were also observed. Orbital bone anomalies are thought to be one of the characteristics of KS.

Change points indicate significant shifts in the statistical properties in data streams at some time points. Detecting change points efficiently and effectively are essential for us to understand the underlying data-generating mechanism in modern data streams with versatile parameter-varying patterns. However, it becomes a highly challenging problem to locate multiple change points in the noisy data. Although the Bayesian information criterion has been proven to be an effective way of selecting multiple change points in an asymptotical sense, its finite sample performance could be deficient. In this article, we have reviewed a list of information criterion-based methods for multiple change point detection, including Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, minimum description length, and their variants, with the emphasis on their practical applications. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the actual performance of different information criteria in detecting multiple change points with possible model mis-specification for the practitioners. A case study on the SCADA signals of wind turbines is conducted to demonstrate the actual change point detection power of different information criteria. Finally, some key challenges in the development and application of multiple change point detection are presented for future research work.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are the two main types of non-coding RNAs that play crucial roles in plant growth and development. However, their specific roles in the fiber growth of ramie plant (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) remain largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we performed miRNA and whole-transcriptome sequencing of two stem bark sections exhibiting different fiber growth stages to determine the expression profiles of miRNAs, lncRNAs, and protein-encoding genes. RESULTS: Among the identified 378 miRNAs and 6,839 lncRNAs, 88 miRNAs and 1,288 lncRNAs exhibited differential expression. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that 29 and 228 differentially expressed protein-encoding genes were targeted by differentially expressed miRNAs and lncRNAs, respectively, constituting eight putative competing endogenous RNA networks. lncR00022274 exhibited downregulated expression in barks with growing fibers. It also had an antisense overlap with the MYB gene, BntWG10016451, whose overexpression drastically increased the xylem fiber number and secondary wall thickness of fibers in the stems of transgenic Arabidopsis, suggesting the potential association of lncR00022274-BntWG10016451 expression with fiber growth. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide insights into the roles of ncRNAs in the regulation of fiber growth in ramie, which can be used for the biotechnological improvement of its fiber yield and quality in the future.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the combination of an anti-angiogenic agent with a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor in cancer treatment is unclear. We assessed the oral combination of fuzuloparib, a PARP inhibitor, and apatinib, a VEGFR2 inhibitor for treating advanced ovarian cancer (OC) or triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). METHODS: This dose-escalation and pharmacokinetics-expansion phase 1 trial was conducted in China. We used a standard 3 + 3 dose-escalation design, with 7 dose levels tested. Patients received fuzuloparib orally twice daily, and apatinib orally once daily. The study objectives were to determine the safety profile, recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D), pharmacokinetics, preliminary efficacy, and efficacy in relation to germline BRCA mutation (gBRCAmut). RESULTS: Fifty-two pre-treated patients were enrolled (30 OC/22 TNBC). 5 (9.6%) patients had complete response, 14 (26.9%) had partial response, and 15 (28.8%) had stable disease. Objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate were 36.5% (95% CI 23.6-51.0) and 65.4% (95% CI 50.9-78.0), respectively. At the highest dose level of fuzuloparib 100 mg plus apatinib 500 mg, the ORR was 50.0% (4/8; 95% CI 15.7-84.3); this dose was determined to be the RP2D. Patients with gBRCAmut had higher ORR and longer median progression-free survival (PFS) than those with gBRCAwt, both in OC (ORR, 62.5% [5/8] vs 40.9% [9/22]; PFS, 9.4 vs 6.7 months) and TNBC (ORR, 66.7% [2/3] vs 15.8% [3/19]; PFS, 5.6 vs 2.8 months). Two dose-limiting toxicities occurred: grade 4 febrile neutropenia (fuzuloparib 100 mg plus apatinib 250 mg) and thrombocytopenia (fuzuloparib 100 mg plus apatinib 375 mg). Maximum tolerated dose was not reached. The most common treatment-related grade ≥ 3 toxicities in all patients were hypertension (19.2%), anaemia (13.5%), and decreased platelet count (5.8%). Exposure of apatinib increased proportionally with increasing dose ranging from 250 to 500 mg, when combined with fuzuloparib 100 mg. CONCLUSIONS: Fuzuloparib plus apatinib had acceptable safety in patients with advanced OC or TNBC. Fuzuloparib 100 mg bid plus apatinib 500 mg qd was established as the RP2D. With the promising clinical activity observed, this combination is warranted to be further explored as a potential alternative to chemotherapy. Condition monitoring of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes used for fluid and gas transfer is important for the safety of energy conservation and the environment. Ultrasonic phased array imaging methods provide a solution to detect and assess defects in HDPE pipes. However, ultrasonic bulk waves propagating in these viscoelastic media are strongly attenuated, resulting in reduced signal amplitude. In this study, a linear-phase Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter is used to remove unwanted frequency components from the measured ultrasonic signals to improve the signal-to-noise ratio before applying the imaging algorithm of the total focusing method (TFM). Building upon this, a block-wise singular value decomposition (SVD) technique, which can adaptively determine the singular value cutoff threshold based on each block in the whole TFM image, is used to enhance the obtained TFM image quality. The performance of the combination of FIR filtering and block-wise SVD technique is validated by experimental data of HDPE pipe materials. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach generates good images to provide the detection and characterization of side-drilled holes in HDPE pipe materials.

Phage therapy has re-emerged as a promising solution for combating antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections. Increasingly, studies have revealed that phages possess therapeutic potential beyond their antimicrobial properties, including regulating the gut microbiome and maintain intestinal homeostasis, as a novel nanocarrier for targeted drug delivery. However, the complexity and unpredictability of phage behavior during treatment pose a significant challenge in clinical practice. The intricate interactions established between phages, humans, and bacteria throughout their long coexistence in the natural ecosystem contribute to the complexity of phage behavior in therapy, raising concerns about their efficacy and safety as therapeutic agents. Revealing the mechanisms by which phages interact with the human body will provide a theoretical basis for increased application of promising phage therapy. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of phage-mammal interactions, including signaling pathways, adaptive immunity responses, and phage-mediated anti-inflammatory responses. Then, from the perspective of phage-mammalian immune system interactions, we present the first systematic overview of the factors affecting phage therapy, such as the mode of administration, the physiological status of the patient, and the biological properties of the phage, to offer new insights into phage therapy for various human diseases.

AIM: To elucidate the safety and visual quality of implantable collamer lens with central hole (ICL V4c) implantation for correcting moderate and high myopia for at least 5y. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 58 patients (114 eyes) who were followed up for at least 5y after ICL V4c implantation. The observation was done before and on 1d, 1mo, 1 and 5y or more after the surgical procedure. The visual acuity, subjective refraction, intraocular pressure, vault, axial length, central hole position, pupil diameter, visual quality, and adverse events were analyzed. The visual quality includes aberration, the modulation transfer function cutoff frequency (MTF cutoff), objective scattering index (OSI), Stroller's ratio (SR), and visual quality questionnaire. RESULTS: The average follow-up period was 69.25±3.80mo (range 60-82mo) and the preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) was -8.66±1.97 D. At 5y after operation, the safety index was 1.01±0.02 and the efficacy index was 0.99±0.42 and SE was -0.65±0.63 D. The 59.6% of the eyes achieved an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20, 76.3% of the eyes had SE within ±1.0 D at the last visit. The axial length increased by 0.29±0.71 mm 5y after the surgery (t=-3.843, P<0.001). The mean vault at the last follow-up was 510.59±245.61 µm. The central hole was on the temporal side in 80 eyes (84.2%). The visual quality questionnaire showed that 98.2% patients were satisfied with the surgical procedure. Adverse events occurred in 4 eyes (3.5%), including the posttraumatic toric ICL rotation (2 eyes), iris incarceration (1 eye), and posttraumatic ICL displacement (1 eye) at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Long-term ICL V4c implantation is safe, effective, and stable for correcting moderate and to high myopia, and the visual quality with patients is excellent and satisfactory, but the progression of axial length still needs attention after surgery.

In this paper, we introduce a new multi-GPU-based spectral element (SE) formulation for simulating ultrasonic wave propagation in solids. To maximize communication efficiency, we purposely developed, based on CUDA-aware MPI, two novel message exchange strategies which allow the common nodal forces of different subdomains to be shared between different GPUs in a direct manner, as opposed to via CPU hosts, during central difference-based time integration steps. The new multi-GPU and CUDA-aware MPI-based formulation is benchmarked against a multi-CPU core and classical MPI-based counterpart, demonstrating a remarkable acceleration in each and every stage of the computation of ultrasonic wave propagation, namely matrix assembly, time integration and message exchange. More importantly, both the computational efficiency and the degree-of-freedom limit of the new formulation are actually scalable with the number of GPUs used, potentially allowing larger structures to be computed and higher computational speeds to be realized. Finally, the new formulation was used to simulate the interaction between Lamb waves and randomly shaped thickness loss defects on plates, showing its potential to become an efficient, accurate and robust technique for addressing the propagation of ultrasonic waves in realistic engineering structures.

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy and prognostic factors of transnasal endoscopic optic decompression in the treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 13 TON patients in The Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Shenzhen Eye Hospital in Shenzhen City (China) from June 2020 to April 2022. These patients had received transnasal endoscopic optic decompression, and hormonal and neurotrophic drugs were given after surgery. Visual acuity (VA) improvement was used as the criterion to judge clinical efficacy. Results: In a total of 13 patients, 13 injured eyes (12 men and 1 woman; mean age, 28.0 ± 11.8 years) received transnasal endoscopic optic decompression. After surgery, nine patients had improved VA, whereas four patients failed to show any improvement, resulting in a total effective rate of 69.2%. Of the six patients with no light perception preoperatively, three had effective results after the operation, giving an effective rate of 50.0%. Of the seven patients with residual light sensation preoperatively, six had effective results after the operation, giving an effective rate of 85.7%. Of the 10 patients operated on within 7 days after injury, seven had effective results, giving an effective rate of 70%. Of the three patients injured and operated on after 7 days, two had effective results, giving an effective rate of 66.7%. Conclusion: Transnasal endoscopic optic nerve decompression is an effective treatment method for TON. The presence of residual light perception and the timing of surgery within 7 days are crucial to the prognosis.

To alleviate the mechanical instability of major shear bands in metallic glasses at room temperature, topologically heterogeneous structures were introduced to encourage the multiplication of mild shear bands. Different from the former attention on topological structures, here we present a compositional design approach to build nanoscale chemical heterogeneity to enhance homogeneous plastic flow upon both compression and tension. The idea is realized in a Ti-Zr-Nb-Si-XX/Mg-Zn-Ca-YY hierarchically nanodomained amorphous alloy, where XX and YY denote other elements. The alloy shows ~2% elastic strain and undergoes highly homogeneous plastic flow of ~40% strain (with strain hardening) in compression, surpassing those of mono- and hetero-structured metallic glasses. Furthermore, dynamic atomic intermixing occurs between the nanodomains during plastic flow, preventing possible interface failure. Our design of chemically distinct nanodomains and the dynamic atomic intermixing at the interface opens up an avenue for the development of amorphous materials with ultrahigh strength and large plasticity.

Famitinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor under clinical investigation for the treatment of solid tumors. Here, a 3-period crossover trial investigated the effect of high-fat or low-fat food intake on the single-dose pharmacokinetic properties of oral famitinib. Twenty-four healthy Chinese participants were enrolled and received a single 25-mg dose of famitinib malate capsule following a high-fat or low-fat breakfast before dosing. Blood samples were collected before dosing (0 hour) to 192 hours after dosing, and famitinib concentrations in plasma were determined with validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Compared with the fasting condition, the geometric mean ratios for low-fat/fasting were 98.6%, 107.7%, and 107.5% for maximum plasma concentration, area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) over the dosing interval, and AUC from time 0 to infinity, respectively. Those for high-fat/fasting were 84.4%, 105.0%, and 105.1% for maximum plasma concentration, AUC over the dosing interval, and AUC from time 0 to infinity, respectively. There was no significant difference in adverse events between fasting and fed conditions, and no serious adverse events occurred during the trial. In conclusion, oral famitinib bioavailability is not affected by food intake, implying that patients with cancer do not need to consider dietary status when using famitinib. This is considered important for convenience and treatment compliance.

Porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is a serious disease caused by multiple pathogens which inflicts huge economic losses on the pig industry. Investigating the epidemiology of porcine respiratory bacterial pathogens (PRBPs) in specific geographic areas and exploring the antibiotic susceptibility of local strains will contribute to the prevention and control of PRDC. However, the epidemiology of PRBPs in Guangxi Province remains unclear, and existing diagnostic methods have multiple limitations, such as high costs and the detection of only a single pathogen at a time. In this study, we developed a multiplex PCR assay for Streptococcus suis, Glaesserella parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, and investigated the prevalence of PRBPs in pigs with respiratory symptoms in Guangxi Province. The isolates from positive samples were subjected to susceptibility tests to 16 antibiotics. Our results indicated that of the 664 samples from pigs with respiratory symptoms, 433 (65.21%), 320 (48.19%), 282 (42.47%), 23 (3.46%), and 9 (1.36%), respectively, carried each of these 5 pathogens; 533 samples were positive; and 377 (56.78%) carried multiple pathogens simultaneously. The dominant PRBPs in pigs with respiratory symptoms in Guangxi province were S. suis, G. parasuis, and A. pleuropneumoniae, which frequently co-infected swine herds. Most of the isolates (A. pleuropneumoniae, G. parasuis, S. suis, and P. multocida) were sensitive to cefquinome, ceftiofur, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), and tiamulin antibiotics. We developed a rapid specific multiplex PCR assay for PRBPs. Our findings provide new information on the epidemiology of PRBPs in Guangxi Province and offer a reference for developing drug targets against PRDC. IMPORTANCE Pigs are closely associated with humans as the most common food animals and the vectors of numerous pathogens. PRDC, caused by multiple pathogens, is a serious disease that can cause growth retardation in swine and even sudden death. Due to the droplet transmission of PRBP and the similar clinical signs of different pathogen infections, most pig farms struggle to identify and control PRBPs, leading to the abuse of antibiotics. In addition, some PRBPs have the potential to infect humans and threaten human health. Therefore, this study developed a multiplex PCR method targeting PRBPs, investigated the prevalence of these pathogens, and tested their antibiotic susceptibility. Our studies have important implications for public health safety and the development of the pig industry.

Objective: Microelectrode recording (MER) guided subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) under local anesthesia (LA) is widely applied in the management of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Whereas, awake DBS under LA is painful and burdensome for PD patients. We analyzed the influence of general anesthesia (GA) on intraoperative MER, to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of GA in MER guided STN-DBS. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on the PD patients, who underwent bilateral MER guided STN-DBS in Wuhan Union Hospital from July 2019 to December 2021. The patients were assigned to LA or GA group according to the anesthetic methods implemented. Multidimensional parameters, including MER signals, electrode implantation accuracy, clinical outcome and adverse events, were analyzed. Results: A total of 40 PD patients were enrolled in this study, including 18 in LA group and 22 in GA group. There were no statistically significant differences in patient demographics and baseline characteristics between two groups. Although, the parameters of MER signal, including frequency, inter-spike interval (ISI) and amplitude, were obviously interfered under GA, the waveforms of MER signals were recognizable and shared similar characteristics with LA group. Both LA and GA could achieve effective electrode implantation accuracy and clinical outcome. They also shared similar adverse events postoperatively. Conclusion: GA is viable and comparable to LA in MER guided STN-DBS for PD, regarding electrode implantation accuracy, clinical outcome and adverse events. Notably, GA is more friendly and acceptable to the patients who are incapable of enduring intraoperative MER under LA.

Introduction: Objective, accurate, and efficient measurement of exophthalmos is imperative for diagnosing orbital diseases that cause abnormal degrees of exophthalmos (such as thyroid-related eye diseases) and for quantifying treatment effects. Methods: To address the limitations of existing clinical methods for measuring exophthalmos, such as poor reproducibility, low reliability, and subjectivity, we propose a method that uses deep learning and image processing techniques to measure the exophthalmos. The proposed method calculates two vertical distances; the distance from the apex of the anterior surface of the cornea to the highest protrusion point of the outer edge of the orbit in axial CT images and the distance from the apex of the anterior surface of the cornea to the highest protrusion point of the upper and lower outer edges of the orbit in sagittal CT images. Results: Based on the dataset used, the results of the present method are in good agreement with those measured manually by clinicians, achieving a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.9895 and an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.9698 on axial CT images while achieving a CCC of 0.9902 and an ICC of 0.9773 on sagittal CT images. Discussion: In summary, our method can provide a fully automated measurement of the exophthalmos based on orbital CT images. The proposed method is reproducible, shows high accuracy and objectivity, aids in the diagnosis of relevant orbital diseases, and can quantify treatment effects.

The Lamb wave reciprocity-based method is an effective candidate for the health monitoring of composite plates. However, if the damage is located symmetrically between the transmitter-receiver pair, the reciprocity still holds true and the method misjudges its presence. In the present work, a new method for computing the reciprocity index (RI) from Lamb wave signals with extended data length is proposed. This method exploits extra indirect waves that bounce one or more times between the damage and other reflectors. These waves probe the damage through different paths and from different directions. Thus, the damage missed by the direct wave may be exposed by the indirect waves. Benefiting from that, two modified RIs are defined and their performance is validated by two experimental examples. As expected, both indices demonstrate excellent sensitivity to damage even in the middle of the transmitter-receiver pair and ensure a low threshold for the pristine condition, illustrating an excellent ability to distinguish between health and illness.

Accurate detection and characterization of defects in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe materials are very important in assessing the structural integrity of critical structures in the nuclear industry. One specific challenge here is the presence of the viscoelastic attenuation of this material, which can lead to resolution degradation and loss of detail in ultrasound imaging. In this work, an effective ultrasonic imaging technique using the least-squares reverse time migration with preconditioned stochastic gradient descent (LSRTM-PSGD) is developed to improve image quality. Compared with standard ultrasonic imaging methods which only consider the direct ray path of ultrasound, least-squares reverse time migration (LSRTM) is a powerful wave-equation-based approach and it has the ability to account for rapid spatial velocity variations and to utilize all wavefield information. The LSRTM is an inversion method, which iteratively updates the reflectivity model by minimizing the modeled data and measured data. The proposed LSRTM-PSGD combines the advantages of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and adaptive learning rate. The SGD updates the parameter on each transmitter and the fluctuation of SGD can enable it to reach a better minimum, thus improving the imaging quality. Compared with the conventional LSRTM algorithm using a fixed step size, the proposed LSRTM-PSGD algorithm can use the adaptive moment estimation to calculate the adaptive learning rate for the parameter, thereby updating the parameter appropriately. The performance of the LSRTM-PSGD algorithm is tested with experimental data. The results show high-quality reconstructed images with good resolution for defect identification in HDPE pipe materials, especially for deep defects.

In this study, the drug-loading and antibacterial activity of carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) crosslinked decellularized lenticules (CDLs) were evaluated. Small incision lenticule extraction derived lenticules were decellularized and modified with crosslinking concentrations of 0.00 (E/L00, non-crosslinked), 0.01 (E/L01), 0.05 (E/L05) and 0.25 mmol (E/L25) EDC per mg lenticules at 5:1 EDC/NHS ratios with non-decellularized non-crosslinked lenticules (NDLs) as controls. NDLs and EDC/NHS CDLs had similar water contents. The light transmittance percentages (400-800 nm) were 91.55 ± 1.16%, 88.68 ± 1.19%, 80.86 ± 1.94%, 85.12 ± 2.42% and 85.62 ± 2.84% for NDLs, E/L00, E/L01, E/L05 and E/L25, respectively (P< 0.01). The EDC/NHS CDLs (diameter: 6.36 ± 0.18 mm; central thickness: 117.31 ± 3.46 µm) were soaked in 3% (wt./vol.) levofloxacin (LEV) solution for 3 h. The drug release concentrations of LEV-impregnated EDC/NHS CDLs were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Zone inhibition (ZOI) againstStaphylococcus aureusof E/L01, E/L05 and E/L25 were superior to E/L00 CDLs (P< 0.01) and among the different crosslinked groups, E/L05 lenticules produced the largest ZOIs and their drug concentration release over 21 d was the highest. EDC/NHS crosslinking can improve the drug-loading effect and antibacterial activity of decellularized lenticules. LEV-impregnated EDC/NHS CDLs are promising drug delivery carriers.
